[upbeat rock music] Ooh, there's that catchy tune telling you it's time for Full Spectrum Cycling,
• 0:24
show number 145, COVID edition. Thanks to Santa Claus, we're kinda semi still isolating here in the Smith factory household. And, uh,
• 0:40
sitting in for JK today is my son Garrett. Hi. Say hi, Garrett. There he is. And, uh, taking the part of the, uh, ever lovely JK Livin, my daughter Sydney. Hello.
• 0:54
And, you know, I don't know, maybe it's just because we started on time today, but somebody, somebody called in already. Which one of these? Oh, these are... Let's, let's see who we got here.
• 1:06
Hey, welcome to the radio program, caller. Who do we have on the line? Hey, this is JK Livid. Oh, JK Livid. [laughs] Completely upset. [laughs] My name is JK Livid.
• 1:17
[laughs] [laughs] Uh, we have, uh, also, it- playing your role today is Miss Sydney Smith over there. Hello. Yes, I heard. I heard. And also, uh- [laughs] Okay.
• 1:29
A- again, with the welcome to the radio program, who do we have on the line? [muffled talking] [laughs] What are you s- talking through a sock or something? [laughs] I am on a headset.
• 1:44
Maybe that's what's sounding crappy. Oh, it just, it sounds horrible. Don't do that anymore. Get rid of that thing. Really? Yeah. Oh. Terrible. You know what?
• 1:51
I think it- Is that, is that how your customers hear you when you talk on the line to them and the, and you're doing the- No... the IT- No... IT thing? No. No, I'm calling back from that headset. It's the best. Yeah.
• 2:04
You sound like Mushmouth. What's that guy's... For, with some cartoon. Remember that guy? You know, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. [laughs] He's got... Uh, Tony's gonna call back on a different line. Okay. All right.
• 2:15
So, uh, yeah, you know, Santa brought the, our fine household the, the 'Rona, so we didn't wanna- Yeah... make everybody kinda feel crappy and stuff, so we did our thing, and this and that.
• 2:28
And now we're here at the, uh, the dining room table in our house- [laughs]... doing a show with, uh, well, JK on the line right now. What's up, JK? How are you doing? How am I sounding? Oh, you sound fantastic.
• 2:44
Oh, good. What, like you're- Am I... you're like five out of five, baby... better than Zoom? Oh, am I? Five out of five. This is how I, this is how I sound during my damn Zoom meetings and whatever, so I'm,
• 2:54
I, I, I was able to transition very easily into this, so. Wow. Well, you probably make everybody super happy. All right. Oh, good. And we're gonna make another attempt at getting T- T Burger on the line.
• 3:07
Hey, radio callers. Did that get- Hey... is that you? Look how crisp and clean you sound. Oh, yeah, sound way better, huh? Is that better? Oh, for cry sake. All over the place- All right... there's calls coming in. Okay.
• 3:17
So we, we got Tony, we got JK, we got, uh, we got Garrett, we got Sydney, and let's get the real person in on this deal. [laughs] Welcome to the radio program, caller. Who do we have on the line? I can't talk to you.
• 3:31
You can talk to us, dude. Hey. Don't worry about it. You can talk to us. [laughs] It's not, it's not a problem. Tell the truth. It's not a problem. [laughs] Sorry.
• 3:39
No, um, my wife is just asking me some detailed question that I did not have time to answer.
• 3:44
[laughs] She's asking, right, I told her I was calling in, but, uh, but later it's just, yeah, so I said I can't talk to her right now, but I can in 10 minutes, so. Well, yeah, for sure.
• 3:54
[laughs] We don't, we, we've got, we had so many guests on today. We, we've got the, we got my kids in- Good... in the dining room. We got JK and Tony calling in, and you're- Right... you're our featured guest, so.
• 4:04
We need to get you on the technology. [laughs] Wow. Yeah. Amazing. Yeah, technology, it's just, it's, it's actually horrible. [laughs] I don't wanna ever deal with it again.
• 4:14
Um, that said, though, Sealy Dave, uh, you got some snow up there in- Yeah... in, in, uh- Sealy Dave calling in... north, northwards... yep, calling in from inside of Dr. Seuss's snow globe.
• 4:24
That's where I live right now. [laughs] Every time I look outside, it's like, "Oh, somebody shook our snow globe again." It kinda looks like that, but, uh, yeah, so great snow up here.
• 4:35
Um, we're just, actually, I'm just, uh, heating up chili and my buddy Tom Schuler of your neck of the woods is up with his wife. They are doing, they ski a double Birkie- Holy mackerel... which is insane.
• 4:48
But, um, they do that every year, and so he was just doing that with a, his former 7-11 teammate, uh, Jeff Bradley, and some other guys that always do that. Um, and, uh, um, so he was up.
• 5:02
But, um, yeah, I think what prompted, uh, uh, this call from me though was I, I sorta did the official announcement finally that I'll be taking over the 100 Bear 100 and Chequamegon 100, uh, races from Tim Kruger and Esker Cycles and Terrein Tires.
• 5:21
Yeah. We watch, I, well, I watched the video of you and Tim talking about it. That was, it was a good, uh, announcement. You guys did a great job. Is that the first time you- Hey...
• 5:30
you, you've used the studio at the, uh, Life Above 8 studio up there? Yeah.
• 5:35
You know, I, because we were sorta doing so many Zoom things during the whole pandemic cycle, you know, I kinda created this little mini studio setup that I have with like, you know, I use my desktop, my spare monitor as, like, the actual video monitor, and I have a little tripod set up.
• 5:54
So it's fairly easy for me to just throw my Sony a7 III on a tripod and click on the little LED lights that I have and, uh- Um, I run it through my laptop.
• 6:06
[clears throat] But that I just recorded straight into the camera and, uh, and then just edited in iMovie, 'cause I'm not really good at Final Cut Pro yet. I think iMovie is a fantastic- I'm a wee-bie here...
• 6:16
thing for most stuff. Uh, going through Final Cut Pro is an awful- Yeah... lot more work. I, I don't know, you know. So- Right. Well, you know, if...
• 6:24
What I would really like is if somebody, one of my friends that, you know, I've got so many friends in video that use that stuff all the time.
• 6:30
If somebody would just sit down with me and show me the five things I need to know in like, oh, Adobe Premier [laughs] or Final Cut Pro, like if we could just- Well, I can tell you, I can tell you the number one-...
• 6:43
I know- Number one, Dave, only use cross-fade. Do not use any other... No wipes. [laughs] No, no, none of that other star crap. Just anytime you're doing a transition- I started to edit-...
• 6:51
either it's a straight cut or it's a wipe. Don't do anything else. I started- Keep it simple...
• 6:56
to edit that video in, in Adobe Premier and it like showed up in the preview as a cropped version, and I, I could not figure out why. I'm like, "Screw it, I'm going back to iMovie. I just know how to use that."
• 7:11
[laughs] Yeah. Yeah, yeah. You know, and, and to be fair, w- really we should, again, with the videos as, as with the podcast, is kinda make it a goal of to never do any editing, because that just wastes a bunch of time.
• 7:24
So if you can get the- [laughs]... if you can, if you can get it down right off the bat, y- it, like live TV or live radio- Yeah... you're doing fine. Otherwise- Right... you're wasting time. Yeah.
• 7:33
So it's like I, I've- It's a, it's a, it's a slightly diff- it's a different art form, but yeah, I have very little interest in doing a bunch of editing. That said, Greg, um, it is kinda handy- It's been-...
• 7:43
to be able to edit in like, you know, like, oh, a little shot of, you know, this shot from my GoPro off my bike while I was riding and then, you know, it, it's kinda nice to edit those things together. Oh, that's true.
• 7:55
So. Yes, of course. You, you are 100% correct. You know, different POVs from different cameras, A cam, B cam, stuff like that, GoPro versus drone or stuff like that.
• 8:05
So I do have to learn some more of that stuff, but I'm not convinced that I need either Final Cut Pro or Adobe. But, uh, anyway, so back to the bike thing, though. Yeah, so I...
• 8:16
So those two events, Hungry Bear 100 and the, uh, Schwarmageddon 100 have been like Terrene Tires events that Tim Kruger started 2008 or something like that, um, back, way back when.
• 8:33
And he's from Nap- Tonanowicagon, so he's originally from here. Now he lives in, splits his time sort of between Minneapolis and, um, Montana, where the other half of his company is based.
• 8:45
But, uh, and his brother Ryan is out there too. But, um,
• 8:49
so he ran those events for years, and they're kinda have this sort of DIY event feel to 'em, um, which I like, and then they also kinda have sort of like this family reunion vibe to 'em, like sorta like, you know, a Gnome Fest or something like that, you know, where the same crew has been coming back for years.
• 9:07
And it's, it's- Slightly less mushrooms-... you know, so I really like that... maybe, I don't know, than Gnome Fest. [laughs] Yeah, perhaps. Perhaps. And Lunz is not a, a fixture- Yeah... at that event, so.
• 9:16
Well, he, but, but now that you're doing it- [laughs]... but now that you're doing it, you're like a, you're- Maybe he will be. [laughs] You're like a sponge for the Lunz, so yeah, he, he may show right up there.
• 9:25
[laughs] Right. Those guys are gonna go do them. But, um, so- They're doing the thing in Marquette coming up, so you might be- Oh, yeah... safe for a little while. Yeah, the Polar Roll? Yeah, yeah, yep. Polar Roll. Yeah.
• 9:36
Yeah, that brings up something else, but let me just finish my thought on this. So, uh, so yeah, so I'm, I...
• 9:41
Tim's business, though, is growing and he just doesn't have time, and he, you know, he splits his time between Minneapolis and out in Montana.
• 9:48
So, uh, the events were probably either gonna go away if somebody else didn't take over 'em. Um, so I, I agreed to sort of take ownership of 'em with my Life Above 8. I started an LLC for that just to own these events.
• 10:02
And, uh, and, uh, I'll... But Tim and, and Odia, uh, will still be at all the events and stuff. I'm just sort of, you know, running the show so they don't have to do it.
• 10:11
Yeah, there's so much like pre-race, pre-show, pre-event things going on that you- Yeah... you know, there's a lot of- Yeah... legwork before the actual event happens- So-... for sure... right.
• 10:20
So I am, I'm doing some of that legwork right now.
• 10:23
I'm just getting, uh, the final details on insurance done, and then once I have that, I'll file permits, and as soon as I f- uh, get a general feel for the permit application, which should be a no-brainer, um, and the insurance seems like it's working out fine, then I'll launch registration.
• 10:39
So I'm thinking if folks are interested, uh, registration should be open around, uh, you know, 1st or 3rd or something of January. Well, that's very ambitious. Yeah.
• 10:51
Hey, and then, but speaking of, uh, Marquette and the UP, I don't know if you happened to see that. I kinda... Was it... Who was it that just did it?
• 10:59
I can't remember who did it, but somebody rode a 50-mile beach ride up there. Did you happen to see that? I did not, but I'm- It was on the Book of Faces...
• 11:07
not, but I'm moving to Michigan just because of what you just said. [laughs] Yeah. Right. Um, yeah, it was, uh, on the north coast of the UP, uh, a 50-mile beach ride, so that's definitely on my... And that's one way.
• 11:25
It's 50 miles one way. Um- Wow... so that's definitely- We'll be up there next summer-... on my to-do list... obviously. Yeah, for sure. Yeah. So let's, uh, let's... I'll, I'll get...
• 11:35
I'll scoop up those details and I'll share that stuff with you, uh, again, but, uh, um, let's, let's try to put something like that on our, on our radar for a long beach ride weekend up in the UP. I like this idea.
• 11:48
We don't have to do it in, in winter. No. We don't have to do it in winter. No. It's cold. No. It's cold out. No. No. No. No. They just did it, so, um... And maybe lake levels are lower in winter. I'm not sure.
• 12:01
Um, but, uh- Not, not appreciably, but there may be some ice out there that you can kinda go around or- Yeah, it might be faster. Yeah. You might go around your, uh- Yeah. And honestly, I could...
• 12:11
I don't mind doing like a 25-mile beach ride one way and a 25-[laughs] At, at, at 25 below... I'm gonna have to do 80, but- 25 for 25. 25 below- Yeah... on a 25-mile ride. I like this idea.
• 12:24
[laughs] If you remove the below. [laughs] Well, we're looking forward to, uh... Well, I don't know if JK is gonna make it now, what with his, uh, situation over there, but, uh, uh, we're gonna do- Not sure.
• 12:38
I'm gonna find out before. Ah, right on More mo- more conclusive. Ah, good call. Rona test. He had the, he had the Rona presumptive positive. [laughs] Oh. So we've been going through that at our house.
• 12:54
Yeah, and I- Yeah, everyone here has kind of e- Yeah... either gone through it or going through it because we're in a closed space and, and, uh... But- Right...
• 13:01
coming up on Saturday, tomorrow, is, uh, the, you know, January 1st traditional Watch the Dips Do the Dip, go down to- Mm-hmm... Swinging Door.
• 13:11
And then, then, uh, I had a thing planned, but that guy fell through, so we don't know what we're doing after that. But we're supposed to have semi-snow globey conditions here. Yeah. [laughs] Nice. Heavy snow too.
• 13:23
It's, it's gorgeous up here. If people are looking for, you know, to actually ride fat bikes in the snow, um, it's... We've got good snow up here now, so... And all the gravel roads are amazing.
• 13:34
So, and it's looks like I said, a, a giant snow globe, so it's absolutely gorgeous. So if people are looking for snow, we, we do have it up here in Campbell Land. And I remembered where that, that fat bike ride was.
• 13:45
It was from Grand Marais to like, out to Whitefish Point. Wow. That's where the, uh, Edmund Fitzgerald- So, so that's like-... might have made-... sort of northeast of-... 15 more miles... northeast of Pictured Rocks.
• 13:54
Yeah, yeah. Northeast of Pictured Rocks. That's, that's where that was, so. Remember the song. Nice. Edmund Fitzgerald. Um- If he would've made that 15 miles around that point, they might have made it. Yep. Right.
• 14:04
Well, well, we can all sing, sing that song and some other shanties and when, when we- [singing]... have a beer at the point. [laughs] Meow, meow, meow. Well, hey, guys, if you got, if you got other guests- Oh, yeah...
• 14:17
I'm gonna go- We, we got the kids, we got the peoples... you know, get our, get our chili going, find out what my wife wanted, but I just did wanna check in. [laughs] Um- All right, Dave, thanks for calling in.
• 14:27
Uh, as always, good information. Uh, snow up, up in the Hayward area. Yeah. Go ahead and ride up there and, uh, you know, give us a shout soon because there's a lot happening this time of year- Will do...
• 14:38
up in your neck of the woods. Yeah, will do. All right, Dave. Okay, buddy. Later. Adios, guys. See ya. Hey, Celidave, everybody. Giving us a little, uh, heads-up on what's happening up there in Campbell Land.
• 14:49
And, uh, okay, so we got, so, so we got, so Tony, Tony, so hey, Tony, what's up? Oh, what's up, what's up? I'm, um, [sighs] I'm excited for snow finally. I've got my studs on.
• 15:01
I thought for sure I'd jinxed it by putting the studs on. And I have to update our one listener and let him know that the Box Nine, Ellroy, the Box Nine is a two-digit shifter, one up, one down. Allroy, by the way.
• 15:16
Not the- All-... single. Ellroy. That's Allroy... All, All. Sorry. A-L-L Roy. Oh. His real name's Trevor, but Allroy is his moniker. And- The Box Nine, yeah... so yeah... it shifts, shifts, yeah.
• 15:27
Which, uh, that's funny, I was gonna look at it and I totally spaced it, but yeah, it goes, it's up and down with two levers.
• 15:33
The, the nice thing about fat bikes is unlike road bikes and other bikes, you can change the tires pretty fast, like minutes. Oh, yeah, for sure. [laughs] And- Yeah, and you can-...
• 15:47
I ended up at this, when I was, when I saw you at the shop, I was like, "Oh, I'm gonna struggle getting these tires on." And man, that went so fast I threw the other bike in the stand and started working on it.
• 15:58
That's why I remembered that the shifter had two levers. Yeah. Yeah, it's like you don't even- So... you don't even have to use your, like, tool or anything. You can just use fingers to get them off. Oh, yeah.
• 16:06
For the most part. Didn't, didn't use a tool. And- Yeah. And they, you know, I don't think Sam ever used those, those studs.
• 16:12
Now I've got a, a fresh set of very slow riding studded tires on my, uh, very slow butt because I haven't ridden my bike and I'm fat. Yeah, but I can keep up with you then, so that's good. Yeah.
• 16:25
[laughs] Hopefully we'll, we'll, we'll survive that, but yeah. Yeah, I'm, uh, I'm, I'm pretty stoked about that.
• 16:32
Uh, Greg, how you been doing with your, uh, I'm, I'm totally changing subject because I'm looking at- Greg, Greg who? W- where, what- Hey, Sven... what's, what's [laughs]... Sven, Sven. [laughs] Oh.
• 16:43
And I, I, I need to ask how your Synology is going. Oh, yeah. Well, it's, it's sitting on a kind of a hollow shelf, so it always sounds like coffee is percolating behind me when it's doing its thing. Mm-hmm.
• 16:54
So I need to get a little, kind of a foamy thing to kinda quiet it down a little bit, but it seems to be doing stuff all the time. Mine's, mine does that too. Yeah, it's like it's doing its stuff. Yeah.
• 17:04
It's making, it's making things happen. Yeah.
• 17:07
Uh- I am, um, I'm painstakingly transferring data from my old NAS to this NAS, and the problem is the old NAS is so old that the only reliable way to transfer data I found is secure FTP, which is so ungodly slow [laughs] I can't believe it.
• 17:23
Well, I just, I just got a Cat6 line so I can do my direct to the NAS, 'cause I'm not doing it over the air. That was, like, 27 hours for a couple things. I'm like, "Yeah, no, I don't have time like that." No, this is...
• 17:36
I'm, actually, this is pretty quick- It's geek talk time... that transfer. It's just the download, it's the download from the old NAS to my workstation before I transfer it back up. Oh.
• 17:45
It's like, "Oh my God, it's gonna be forever." But anyway, that's not talking about bikes. Well- Um-... bikes, shmikes, I have to say...
• 17:52
so I am, I am hoping that I, I fully expect I'm gonna go see my mom on Friday because my test was negative, and so was the rest of my family. Um, and then I'm really looking forward to, uh... Oh, wait.
• 18:03
I'm looking forward to riding tomorrow. Yeah, tomorrow's gonna be a good day. Should be tomorrow. I guess it was a good day. Yeah, yeah.
• 18:09
I didn't even have to use my- I even still have an extra, I still have an extra beer token from Swinging Door. Oh, I got a couple too. Can you believe that? I managed to leave without spending one of my tokens.
• 18:18
I did actually- I found a couple, uh, three or one drink, like the wood token, like for any drink. That's a- Yeah... bloody Mary right there, baby. And, and yes, I know. Yeah, I know.
• 18:31
I'm, I'm willing the, uh, the PCR gods to be nicely to me yesterday so I can join this. [laughs] Oh. Speaking of which. [beer can rattles] Top- Oh, yes, yes... top of the hill? We go to the top of the hill.
• 18:46
Oh, I got, I got top of the hill over here. We got top- [laughs]... of the hill in the Smith household. There's, there's no beer, but I do have something to crack open. It's, uh... [beer tab pops] Ooh. Coca-Cola Zero.
• 18:57
[laughs] Oh. Yeah. We did not- I'm too rock and roll.
• 19:03
Well, I did, I do have, I do have to put this plug-in to Total Wine Sydney, because, uh, she brought me beer for Christmas presents, which will get us through the next few show week, uh, show weeks with, uh, good beer on the top of the hill.
• 19:18
So, uh, Sydney, thank you. Thank you, Sydney. Also with the- Hey... uh, Coca-Cola Zero. I'm gonna do... [slurps] You're mixing that with the beer? Is that what you're getting at? I don't have any beer. Hmm.
• 19:31
Ooh, beer mosu? Beer mosu. Yeah, yeah, yep. What are you guys drinking? I'm having, I'm having a Wild Range Brewing Company India pale ale. Once Wild, Always Wild.
• 19:45
Um, for those of you that don't know, and I'm gonna guess this is, uh, a, a brewed for, um... What, what's the name? Trade- not Trader Joe's. Um, the other one. Aldi Beer. Ooh. They're, they're British- It is-...
• 20:00
aren't they?... uh, German, actually. Yeah, no, they're German. Oh, they're German? Um, this was brewed in Rochester, New York.
• 20:08
Yeah, Aldi and, and Trader Joe's are owned by two brothers, and I'm 99% certain they're German. Kinda like Nike and Puma. Is that right? Yeah, they were owned by two German brothers.
• 20:18
[laughs] From what you said, it didn't seem like it, no. Or no, no, no, no, no. They were, they were owned by brothers? Wait, wait, wait. I'm sorry. It's Adidas and Puma. I apologize.
• 20:26
[laughs] But they were two German brothers who- Owned by family members? Yeah. I know that. That's cool. Right? Right. Right, right. Yeah. Shame. Interesting. Yeah. Yeah. So it's a, I, it's a, you know,
• 20:36
it's an all right beer. I've had it once or twice. I think I brought it to the show once, too. It's, it's, uh, it's all right. All right. It's, yeah. All right.
• 20:44
Uh, so we're gonna get to the w- the utes here before we run out of time, but, uh, JK, what do you got? Uh, what'd you get for Christmas?
• 20:54
I got some toasty, super toasty Carhartt gloves that are like nice and fleecy and waterproof-y and whatever. Uh, gave them a couple rides so far, and they're working nicely, nicely.
• 21:07
And then, like, a couple other little cold weather things I need to be, you know, upgraded every season that I just never get around to, which works out and nothing. I also noticed- And-...
• 21:19
that, that you put, like- And, and, and- Like-... Book of Boba Fett... that, that, I think that- Disney, Disney, Disney gave me Book of Boba Fett. [laughs] I just saw it was in all caps. I'm like, have you...
• 21:29
You've watched it already then, I take it? Oh, shit, yes. Yeah. The Book of Boba Fett. Breaking apart- Oh... breaking down the Easter eggs and everything. Yeah, yes, yes. Yeah, yeah.
• 21:38
Well, it's on my radar 'cause it came out today. Second episode this week. I mean, two days ago. [laughs] Goddamn internet time. All right then. Yeah, Book of Boba Fett. Who's messing with the microphone?
• 21:50
Yeah, Tony knocked that off. [laughs] Oh, might've been me. James might be it. Hey, hey, where's James? Because he's touching his microphone. Damn it, James. Damn it. All right. Well, before they get bored, let's...
• 22:01
We're gonna get to the utes here. Uh, thanks everybody for calling in, and, uh, if you wanna hang on the line and listen, you're welcome to. But, uh, I mean- You're welcome...
• 22:10
really, again, you know, sitting in the place of, uh, uh, JK Living over there is my son Garrett.
• 22:16
And just wanted Garrett to kinda hang out and tell us a little bit about his cycling experience this last year with, with the NICA team at the Whitefish Bay High School. What did you think of that? How'd that go?
• 22:28
I don't know. There's... I can't really think of any super interesting stories, just the fact that, I don't know, high school cycling is a fun activity. It's a good way to pass time.
• 22:40
And, um, I met a lot of my friends through it actually back in, like, seventh grade when I joined it. And you're a sophomore now, so you're seven, eight, nine, 10. Four. Four years' worth of, of cycling with the...
• 22:55
And you started out with a composite team, 'cause they didn't have enough members for your own school to have its own team, so you combined with some others in the area.
• 23:05
Now there's been enough participation that Whitefish Bay has its own team. Whitefish Bay's team is almost fully made by my grade. [laughs] Oh, wow.
• 23:15
I think the only other person from Whitefish Bay was, um, John, the senior. We should get some younger people in on your team. Uh, there were some middle schoolers and, like, sixth graders.
• 23:28
Yeah, it's 'cause people have to come up and take the place of the superheroes and whatnot. It grows every year. Yeah, that's the nice thing about NICA.
• 23:36
And I almost think, to be fair, that's gonna be its sort of sore point is that it's getting so big that it's going to become a gargantuan thing that is not as fun as when you started when it wasn't that big.
• 23:50
So I remember doing that back in the old days with the Wars series. It's like the original ones were, you know, kinda like a family and couple hundred people having fun.
• 23:58
Then it got to be, like, this behemoth, and you can't even really control it.
• 24:02
So I hope that doesn't happen for NICA, or they figure out a way to split it off into separate areas of the state or the country or whatever so that you can still have that kinda grassroots feel, and it's not all about just being the winner or the fastest or whatever.
• 24:19
It's about kinda going with your friends and hanging out and having a good time and doing the pre-rides and doing the practices.
• 24:26
And yeah, doing the weekend race thing is great, but- Really, it's all the stuff leading up to it, at least I hope that's how most people feel Yeah, the weekend races, um, are usually a really good,
• 24:40
uh, time to, like, get to know other people on the team if you haven't already.
• 24:44
'Cause, you know, we have to, uh, for three of the five races, we have to camp overnight from Saturday to Sunday, so it's really nice, um, 'cause you do a pre-ride on Saturday, and then do the actual race on Sunday.
• 25:03
So Saturday night is really just a time when all the teams are kinda messing around together. Uh, one of the races this year was at Wausau.
• 25:13
A couple of my friends and I saw some other people messing around, and we decided to just kind of walk in and join them, and we thought they were all just random people from various teams.
• 25:26
It wasn't until the next morning that we found out they were all from Madison West, and we just kind of walked into their game of zombie tag or whatever and just joined them. Nobody stopped us or anything.
• 25:37
[laughs] That's cool. And one other, so, uh, f- my family, my wife, hi, Wendy, she's over there on the couch,
• 25:45
got me a propane fire pit for Christmas, which you guys learned about kind of on one of these camp outs at NICA, and I thought, boy, that's a really [laughs] cool thing.
• 25:56
It's like in the city here, trying to do a fire in your backyard, it's like, "Oh, it's too windy. Eh, this and that. We don't have any wood." It's like, just hook up a propane tank and you're good to go. Right.
• 26:07
You guys in Oslo, you could bury a natural gas line, too. Yeah, we could do that. Now I have a deck in the way, though, so we're gonna have to tunnel, like, some kinda,
• 26:15
I don't know, some kinda mole underneath the, the deck to get to- Call that Colin guy from the UK. Yeah. [laughs] That Colin feet engineer guy who builds all the underground stuff. There you go. Right on.
• 26:27
Um, also, uh, taking the place of, uh, Mr. Tony Burger, uh, my daughter Sydney, and I th- I thought Sydney would be...
• 26:34
She's been very cycling oriented for a long time, especially since I said, you know, why get a driver's license when you're going to college, 'cause that costs a lot of money.
• 26:43
So, uh, Sydney's graduated from college and is working a couple of jobs now, but is still riding her bike to work on days when she's working in the neighborhood here.
• 26:54
And I, I just, you know, how did you, how did you get through college without a car? That's, it's weird. Who, whoever would've thought of that?
• 27:00
So the main way I got through college without a car was I, well, when I worked downtown in La Crosse, I rode my bike to work. And if it was really, really, really, really cold, I'd bribe one of my roommates to drive me.
• 27:13
[laughs] No- no Uber, no- No Uber, though. No, um, Lyft. Um, La Crosse has a okay-ish bus system. I didn't utilize it that much, but yeah, I would bike. I think I had to get a ride once. Like, I
• 27:28
rode my bike to work all the time, and I would, like if it was late at night and I had to go into, you know, arts majors, we have to go in all the time at late at night, I would ride my bike to campus or walk or whatever.
• 27:44
And I mean, the only time I really felt m- that I missed a car was when I had to go grocery shopping, but there are things that you can do to make it so you don't need that.
• 27:54
There's, La Crosse isn't really the best community for, like, a lot of stuff isn't very close in La Crosse. To campus, yeah. To campus. For sure. To campus, right. Yeah. Um, so
• 28:06
but there were things I could do, and made it work, and- Do you remember what your bike, what kinda bike you rode? It was a Univega. 507. One of the best Uni- Nice... one of the best Univegas ever made.
• 28:16
Yeah, that's a great bike, and it, so that was from '93 to '95, somewhere in there, so that bike is older than my daughter- [laughs]... and she rode the thing through college. It's great.
• 28:27
And it's still, to this day- And I'm still riding it to work now... yeah. I ride it to Total Wine. [laughs] Yeah, it's- Are you saying steel is real? Steel is real, Tony. Thanks for bringing that up.
• 28:38
Yeah, Sydney works at Total Wine. And, and liquor, or...? Eh, Total Wine and More. And More, okay. So yeah. More. Not, yeah, More. Um, yeah. So that's brought- That's regular. [laughs] Brought the wine into the mix.
• 28:54
Can I get shower curtains there? Yeah, no. Whiskey curtains. [laughs] Nice. Right on. Well, you know, I mean, we managed to already kill almost all of our listeners,
• 29:07
and there's just the one left now, so I'd like to say thank you very much for listening to our COVID episode with, uh, Sydney sitting in for Tony, and, and Garrett sitting in for JK, and JK and Tony on the horn.
• 29:21
[laughs] And also- [laughs]... Sealy Dave, 'cause- Hello, hello... Sealy Dave always makes our shows good. But, uh, anybody wanna, any, uh, Garrett, you got any going away from this show bike stuff you wanna say?
• 29:37
Not really other than the fact that my dad makes good bikes. Good bikes. [laughs] Got to wear, wear helmets. Yeah. Drive crazy, take chances.
• 29:46
Uh, Sydney, thank you very much for just, you know, I know there was a lot of stuff going on today, but you guys were great guests. And owing to the fact that we'll probably be back in the studio next week, I hope.
• 29:57
By the way, it rained in the studio. I gotta tell you guys about that later. Ah. Um, uh, yeah. Oh, you gotta see the video of the roof. [laughs] Really rolled.
• 30:08
Oh, it just, it- it- it rolled- I mean, the- It rolls like the lakefront when you're l- watching the water. The roof rolls like that when it's not supposed to. Oh. So. Put, put it in the notes.
• 30:18
Put it in the meeting, uh, the meeting notes. The podcast notes. [laughs] Yeah, I... I, I don't know if I- I- Yeah... if I can get the video from, uh, Jamie- You need to come...
• 30:28
I, I will, 'cause oh my God, it, it's no wonder the place is leaking like a sieve. But I, I just, I figured I should move to West Texas 'cause I'm so good at finding water, so. Oh. Yep. Yep.
• 30:41
That's a, that's a funny one, Greg. Well, that's what she said. Sven. That's a funny one, Sven. All right. Well, thanks, guys, for being on the horn.
• 30:49
Thanks, people, for being in the k- the dining room, and, uh, we'll be back here next week with- Well, what is the show number, Greg? This is 145 there, bitches. Ah. Yep, 146 next week. All right.
• 31:00
Hopefully we're back in the studio, I believe. Sounds good. 10-4, 1-9, over. All right. Bye-bye. Oh, wait. That, that, that, that, that, that's going in here. There we go. There we go. There we go.
• 31:16
[upbeat rock music] Oh, oh, those guys left.
• 31:48
I was just gonna say, "Hey, guys. How's it going?" No, they left, though. They, they, uh, they both hung up. Aw. Oh, that's sad. Okay. Bye, everybody
