- 0:00Speaker 1: When you put the pin stripes on, you're not just
- 0:02Speaker 1: putting a baseball uniform on. You're wearing tradition and you're
- 0:05Speaker 1: wearing pride, and you're gonna wear it the right way.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Boy, oh boy, I am so glad on the One
- 0:11Speaker 2: Leg Up Network that sixty minutes preserved that because we
- 0:15Speaker 2: just honored the boss, mister George Steinberner on his fifteenth
- 0:21Speaker 2: anniversary of his passing, I mean fifteen years ago on
- 0:25Speaker 2: July thirteenth.
- 0:26Speaker 3: I remember it vividly.
- 0:27Speaker 2: We were just processing the loss of Bob Shepherd, and
- 0:31Speaker 2: come to think of it, I thought, it's interesting that
- 0:35Speaker 2: Bob Shepherd passed two days before George Steinberner, almost as
- 0:39Speaker 2: if mister Shepherd, the legendary PA announcer, was meant to
- 0:46Speaker 2: announce the arrival of mister Seberner to Heaven.
- 0:50Speaker 3: I mean, I can only introduce it that way.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Because two days later, on July thirteenth, it came down
- 0:58Speaker 2: that mister Seyberner, at the age of eighty, had passed away.
- 1:02Speaker 2: And it was a really rough day. I was supposed
- 1:05Speaker 2: to go on Queen's College Radio before the All Star
- 1:09Speaker 2: Game WQMC Radio, and the tenor of that show featured
- 1:16Speaker 2: News Day journalist Jim Bomback, who right after Reyne Grone
- 1:22Speaker 2: called me earlier in the day to get my story
- 1:27Speaker 2: and to publish my story on my connection with George Seiberner.
- 1:32Speaker 2: That's why I seeing Ray and Jim Bomback was so
- 1:35Speaker 2: important today at the statue of mister Seiberner at Yankee
- 1:39Speaker 2: Stadium in a series that featured my dad's favorite team.
- 1:45Speaker 3: The Cubs. So the Cubs and Yankees meeting on the fifteenth.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Anniversary did not feel like an accident because my dad, Ray, Jim,
- 1:57Speaker 2: and I we all revewed George Steinbrener. My dad's grading
- 2:03Speaker 2: system of how a day went was basically, how much
- 2:07Speaker 2: were you like George Steinbrener today or you know, do
- 2:12Speaker 2: the whole job completely like mister Steinburner would.
- 2:15Speaker 3: That's the wording he would tell me time after time.
- 2:21Speaker 2: And really, when he says, George Seiberner, when you wear
- 2:24Speaker 2: the pin dripes, you wear it with pride. I feel
- 2:28Speaker 2: like that was a life commentary. It wasn't just about
- 2:32Speaker 2: playing baseball. It was about being a Yankee in life,
- 2:38Speaker 2: doing your job to the fullest, doing your job to
- 2:40Speaker 2: the excellence.
- 2:42Speaker 3: In all cannadas.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I had posted an earlier podcast, but I wanted it
- 2:46Speaker 2: to sound crisper. It would be only right to do
- 2:49Speaker 2: it right for George Steinbrener in honoring George Seinberner, and
- 2:54Speaker 2: so I wanted to pick a quieter environment out where
- 2:57Speaker 2: you wouldn't hear me on the train.
- 2:59Speaker 3: And you heard that version.
- 3:03Speaker 2: My apologies and my apologies mister Seiberg, because that was
- 3:06Speaker 2: not the best I could have made it. The best
- 3:10Speaker 2: to make it is in a perfect kind of studio
- 3:13Speaker 2: setting where it's quiet, no external noise to truly talk
- 3:20Speaker 2: about the legendary George Seiberner and the George Steinberner I
- 3:25Speaker 2: knew see on the headlines which he'd probably seen fifteen
- 3:30Speaker 2: years ago from Jim bomb Back, and then twenty plus
- 3:33Speaker 2: years ago when they said the child tried to cheer
- 3:36Speaker 2: a boss, or that picture down sixth aven or at
- 3:39Speaker 2: the Stuben Day parade with mister Steinbergner Rudy Giuliani. Beyond
- 3:43Speaker 2: those moments in the local papers was a man who
- 3:50Speaker 2: asked me something that I think changed my life.
- 3:54Speaker 3: See, when we.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Were first welcome up to the suite, I was very jumpy.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I was about eight years old and I was about
- 4:00Speaker 2: ten years old and twelve years old, and I wanted
- 4:02Speaker 2: to spend my time between the sweet seats, the seats
- 4:05Speaker 2: of the suite, and then the office of George Stemer
- 4:10Speaker 2: the round table that also is a revered round table
- 4:14Speaker 2: in mister Steinberner's office, which by the way, made its
- 4:19Speaker 2: way across the street in two thousand and nine. But
- 4:27Speaker 2: mister Steinberner, I knew, asked me where do you want
- 4:31Speaker 2: to sit out there in the or in here?
- 4:33Speaker 3: You can't be in two places?
- 4:35Speaker 2: Well, sure enough, I picked right next to mister Steinberner
- 4:40Speaker 2: at that round table because it just what baseball fan,
- 4:45Speaker 2: what kid, what finn and the Yankees wouldn't want to
- 4:48Speaker 2: sit next to the owner of the Yankees when given
- 4:51Speaker 2: the opportunity and the privilege.
- 4:55Speaker 3: And I soaked up so.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Many meetings that were Brian Cashman and Randy Levine and
- 4:58Speaker 2: lawn Trust and saw how baseball was more than just
- 5:04Speaker 2: a game. It was a well oiled machine of a business.
- 5:11Speaker 2: And I saw how efficient mister Symonder was getting things
- 5:14Speaker 2: done meeting after meeting after meeting. It's why I had
- 5:18Speaker 2: to redo this show, because I didn't want it to
- 5:21Speaker 2: sound like crap when honoring mister Seybriner who made sure
- 5:24Speaker 2: there was no crap at the end of the day,
- 5:29Speaker 2: at the end of the day. And you know what,
- 5:32Speaker 2: I saw him also react to every play like a.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Regular fan would. I mean, this is the owner of
- 5:37Speaker 3: the Yankees. He's cursed the TV. How many of you
- 5:40Speaker 3: at there when the Yangs make a mistake? Curse on
- 5:42Speaker 3: the TV.
- 5:43Speaker 2: He also wasn't his elation when they would win game
- 5:48Speaker 2: after game after game. I mean he was the ultra
- 5:54Speaker 2: fan and not just the owner of the Yankees. He
- 5:59Speaker 2: was what the Yankees empire Darth Envy, Jacob b speaks,
- 6:05Speaker 2: Ali cabro uh chass. He's what they embody when they
- 6:11Speaker 2: provide that space for the fans, that passion for the
- 6:16Speaker 2: fans to be you know, broadcasted through the Yankees Empire
- 6:20Speaker 2: on X. Mister Steinberger is what the Bronx Zoo embodies
- 6:25Speaker 2: and Jake Goosac embodies when he goes out and talks
- 6:28Speaker 2: to the fans and here's their perspective during the good
- 6:31Speaker 2: times during the rough times. Mister mister Steinberger is what
- 6:40Speaker 2: and who Pinstripes Uncensored podcasts Uh Anthony King of Pinstripes
- 6:49Speaker 2: and Chris Kliff embody, that passion, that real talk about
- 6:55Speaker 2: the Yankees. The difference is when the Yankee fans shout
- 6:59Speaker 2: the disapproval.
- 7:01Speaker 3: They just shout it.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Not only didn't Ye George Seberd are going the papers
- 7:05Speaker 2: about it, but he also could make moves to do
- 7:09Speaker 2: something about it. And we're sort of seeing that again.
- 7:14Speaker 2: The cutting of DJ LeMay is exactly what he would do.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Moving a player from one position to the other like
- 7:20Speaker 2: they did with Jazzism is exactly something that mister Steinburnder
- 7:24Speaker 2: wasn't done to keep this going, to keep this team
- 7:28Speaker 2: having one leg up in the at least once again.
- 7:34Speaker 2: And then the kindness that mister Steibrinder embodied is the
- 7:38Speaker 2: kindness that Ray and they'd grown embodies. That Frank Luna
- 7:42Speaker 2: that just in time baseball and is saminhu nithan embody
- 7:50Speaker 2: that opening of doors that mister Steimerner is exactly what
- 7:53Speaker 2: those people I just mentioned are doing twenty five years later.
- 7:57Speaker 3: And I'm so grateful for that. I am so grateful
- 8:01Speaker 3: for that.
- 8:04Speaker 2: And then the anecdotes that I wanted to share when
- 8:07Speaker 2: remembering mister Salmoner are the things you wouldn't see in
- 8:10Speaker 2: the papers. So there was that story of whether I
- 8:12Speaker 2: wanted to sit outside or in the suite or in
- 8:16Speaker 2: the office.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Of course I chose missus Steibert's office.
- 8:18Speaker 2: And I learned a lot over that decade watching him work,
- 8:23Speaker 2: watching him not only run a baseball team, but be
- 8:25Speaker 2: a businessman.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Not only be a businessman, but then pay so much
- 8:32Speaker 3: so attention to his team.
- 8:34Speaker 2: He then would make moves during the tradeline, he did orchestra,
- 8:37Speaker 2: all of that.
- 8:40Speaker 3: He just had every facet going.
- 8:44Speaker 2: But the moment I knew he was so in touch
- 8:46Speaker 2: with the everyday person, with the Yankee fan, Yankee kids.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Not only was when he took rain Neygron off the
- 8:56Speaker 2: streets and put him in a Yankee uniform as a
- 8:59Speaker 2: ball boy, but when he.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Asked me.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Multiple times, how'd your schoolwork going? My dad and mister
- 9:12Speaker 2: Steiburner were sort of built from the same cloth in
- 9:13Speaker 2: that way is focus on your studies, focus on school,
- 9:17Speaker 2: focus on that first. So when the owner of the
- 9:22Speaker 2: Yankees asked me when I was in seventh grade, how's
- 9:25Speaker 2: your homework?
- 9:26Speaker 3: How's your school?
- 9:27Speaker 2: I thought to myself, here's a man that is running
- 9:31Speaker 2: the most successful baseball franchise, that's running a twenty six
- 9:35Speaker 2: time World Series champion, and he's concerned about how this
- 9:40Speaker 2: kid from New York City who went to a school
- 9:42Speaker 2: online called the Viscardi Center is doing in his studies.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Mister Steinberner got it over and over again. He understood it,
- 9:54Speaker 2: He understood to give back. He also understood and was
- 9:58Speaker 2: in touch with the average everyday parent, everyday a person.
- 10:07Speaker 3: And so those two anecdotes, the choosing between the sweet
- 10:11Speaker 3: seats and the round.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Table of George Simmerer's office, and then the idea that
- 10:18Speaker 2: he would be so concerned with how I'm doing with
- 10:21Speaker 2: my schoolwork. It impacted me and it impacts me to
- 10:30Speaker 2: this day. And what I realized as well is, in
- 10:36Speaker 2: addition to working hard at my craft in radio, when
- 10:41Speaker 2: I get to meet newer Yankees or Yankee legends, the
- 10:44Speaker 2: common thread when meeting all these guys, whether it was
- 10:47Speaker 2: just meeting Ben Rice the other day thanks to Frankliner Junior,
- 10:51Speaker 2: or running into the John Flaherty's and the Jim Leritzes
- 10:54Speaker 2: and the Bernie Williams, is the Mariano's Latinos Latino Martinez
- 11:00Speaker 2: of the world. The common thread between those legends and
- 11:04Speaker 2: today's Yankees is George Steinbrenner and we can never forget that,
- 11:14Speaker 2: because I don't care if we're gonna be thirty years
- 11:18Speaker 2: up since his passing or I guess twenty years since
- 11:23Speaker 2: his passing in a few years. The fact remains the
- 11:29Speaker 2: common thread to this day will always be George Steinberner
- 11:34Speaker 2: and what he created. He makes kids want to be
- 11:37Speaker 2: a Yankee today. He makes kids like Ben Rice and
- 11:43Speaker 2: guys like j Cescara work hard to get to the show,
- 11:46Speaker 2: to wear that Yankee uniform.
- 11:50Speaker 3: And I think that has to be recognized.
- 11:56Speaker 2: That while Hall is running the team, what George Simon
- 12:02Speaker 2: and are belt is what the kids want to be
- 12:06Speaker 2: part of today, that winning culture, those pinstripe traditions, and
- 12:17Speaker 2: to the outlets that continue to amplify the good and
- 12:21Speaker 2: cover this team, To the fans out there that are
- 12:27Speaker 2: so passionate they express it every day, like Caleb and
- 12:30Speaker 2: Klein and Johanna and Rock and Robin. Those folks.
- 12:47Speaker 3: They're the engine.
- 12:48Speaker 2: They're the people that keep this fan base enthusia And
- 12:52Speaker 2: how can I forget Madison. All of these folks are
- 12:59Speaker 2: continuing the passion that George Steiberner poured into this team
- 13:07Speaker 2: day in and day out, poured into the running of
- 13:10Speaker 2: the team day in and day out, and there is
- 13:18Speaker 2: only one expectation every year, and that is the World Series.
- 13:23Speaker 3: And that is a gold standard.
- 13:26Speaker 2: And that was the standard set by George Steinberner, as
- 13:30Speaker 2: documented on sixty Minutes with the clip we started with.
- 13:35Speaker 1: When you put the pin stripes on, you're not just
- 13:37Speaker 1: putting a baseball uniform on. You're wearing tradition and you're
- 13:40Speaker 1: wearing pride, and you're gonna wear it the right way.
- 13:44Speaker 4: The two other people I really want to thank here
- 13:47Speaker 4: for continuing to keep those doors open, by the way,
- 13:50Speaker 4: are Rob Gomez and Haley oh Man.
- 13:55Speaker 3: They are always welcoming as the Steinberner family, and I'm
- 13:58Speaker 3: so thankful for that and for them.
- 14:03Speaker 2: And if I may talk a little baseball before we
- 14:07Speaker 2: wrap up this memory of a moral episode of mister
- 14:10Speaker 2: Simon Er, if I may talk a little baseball. Did
- 14:17Speaker 2: you notice when Josan Domingez was leading off the last
- 14:21Speaker 2: during that wind streak and that sweep of the barriers
- 14:27Speaker 2: they were winning when Josan was batging lead off. Even
- 14:30Speaker 2: the eleven nothing run was a route of the Cubs
- 14:34Speaker 2: on Friday night was keyed up, I believe because John
- 14:37Speaker 2: wasn't leadoff.
- 14:38Speaker 3: He was batting two for three that night.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Well, they go back to Goldsmith at the top two
- 14:43Speaker 2: times and they don't win. And it's not a bashing
- 14:51Speaker 2: of Goldschmith. I just think that Jossan is the guy.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Consistency at the top is also something George Simon or preached.
- 15:01Speaker 2: There's a reason why Derek Jeter was that leadoff hitter
- 15:04Speaker 2: all through that run, and I think George Seimer had
- 15:10Speaker 2: a head in that. But there's gotta be that push
- 15:15Speaker 2: to make it a consistent leadoff hitter. And I still
- 15:18Speaker 2: think Jason is the guy. I really hoped that the
- 15:23Speaker 2: Yanks would win two out of three this weekend to
- 15:25Speaker 2: end the All Star to head to the All Star Break.
- 15:28Speaker 3: It didn't happen.
- 15:30Speaker 2: My Dad's Cubs are on fire. What else can I say?
- 15:34Speaker 2: And I do feel like it even doubt a little bit.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Seeing the Yanks winning Wrigley in twenty eleven and then
- 15:40Speaker 2: today seeing the Cubs winn a Yankee Stadium, it seems like.
- 15:43Speaker 3: An evening out now. But there was one favorite of mine.
- 15:50Speaker 2: That was in the papers with mister Steinberner when they said,
- 15:56Speaker 2: as the Post wrote, Steinberner rubbed the top of Garrett's
- 16:01Speaker 2: baseball cap. And this is about when I was eight
- 16:05Speaker 2: or ten years old, eight or nine years old, maybe
- 16:07Speaker 2: a little older. And I told them we're going to
- 16:13Speaker 2: get him tomorrow after they lost the game to the Orioles,
- 16:17Speaker 2: and they quoted in the paper the direct interaction.
- 16:21Speaker 3: We'll get them tomorrow, buddy, Mister Steibrender said to me.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Well, I want to make this guarantee here on one
- 16:27Speaker 2: leg up with Alex Garrett. I believe just two games
- 16:31Speaker 2: out of the al least heading into the break, we'll
- 16:36Speaker 2: get him.
- 16:36Speaker 3: After that break.
- 16:38Speaker 2: We'll get him after this All Star break, mister Seibrender,
- 16:40Speaker 2: I believe it. I see a lot of potential now
- 16:43Speaker 2: after these this homestand I know the last two games
- 16:47Speaker 2: were tough, but that comeback on Thursday night could be
- 16:53Speaker 2: a great foreshadow for things to come. And who thought
- 16:56Speaker 2: the Athletics would beat the Blue Jays two out of three,
- 16:59Speaker 2: But it happened.
- 17:01Speaker 3: And the weekend and the week that was where the
- 17:04Speaker 3: Blue Jays were nting three.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Games up, by the way, well now they are only
- 17:08Speaker 2: two games up. It's not insurmountable. You just got a
- 17:13Speaker 2: bat just on leadoff, and God love the belly bombs.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Going into the week, you know, going to the All
- 17:22Speaker 2: Star break got up. Jazz's swing is not affected. But
- 17:29Speaker 2: but roster management wise, I think you just gotta have
- 17:36Speaker 2: just leadoff and I think the mix that worked during
- 17:41Speaker 2: that wind streak, don't change it, don't change it up.
- 17:50Speaker 2: I think mister Seiberner had preached consistency over and over again,
- 17:54Speaker 2: and maybe that's where I'm channeling tonight and when I
- 17:57Speaker 2: said it last Sunday too. But to the three men,
- 18:02Speaker 2: to the two guys that are conservators legacy through their
- 18:06Speaker 2: writing and did fifteen years ago with Ray and Jim bombback.
- 18:13Speaker 3: It was great to reconnect with you.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Jim, especially after you wrote that beautiful piece on my
- 18:18Speaker 2: real friendship and connection. My dad and I had to
- 18:22Speaker 2: mister Steinberner. There's so many alongside here. Mister Steinberner met
- 18:30Speaker 2: Ray considering mister Simoner's legacy, but it starts with Ray Jim,
- 18:38Speaker 2: who really were so involved in the way we remember
- 18:43Speaker 2: mister Simon fifteen years ago, and they certainly have one
- 18:49Speaker 2: leg up in preserving mister Steimoner's legacy. And the people
- 18:54Speaker 2: following suit, may I say include this podcast, are working
- 18:59Speaker 2: hard every day to keep that legacy alive, to keep
- 19:05Speaker 2: that winning drive alive.
- 19:09Speaker 3: And as I say, if the fans.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Her were giving, you know, if the Yanks heard the
- 19:16Speaker 2: fans as pleasure, while that same pleasure was said by
- 19:19Speaker 2: mister Staimerner, if the fans are electric, oh, mister Steimerner
- 19:23Speaker 2: felt that same electrics.
- 19:24Speaker 3: He was the ultra fan and he was the ultra.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Boss that brought a seven World Series here to New
- 19:39Speaker 2: York City and change the lives of so many people
- 19:43Speaker 2: along the way. And we can continue having one leg
- 19:47Speaker 2: up for him and one leg up in cheering for
- 19:53Speaker 2: the Yankees, to make sure they know we want them
- 19:57Speaker 2: to have one leg up in this division, in this league,
- 20:01Speaker 2: and in Major League Baseball.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Once again.
- 20:05Speaker 2: We are still on the quest for twenty eight, and
- 20:08Speaker 2: it's a quest they've been on since mister Steimner left
- 20:11Speaker 2: us on July thirteenth, twenty ten. It's about time we've
- 20:16Speaker 2: fulfilled that quest for twenty eight. Do it for mister Steimner,
- 20:21Speaker 2: do it for the Yankee fan base, and do it
- 20:24Speaker 2: in the name of having pride being a Yankee
