- 0:41Their thoughts and words on all sorts of topics happening in the sport as we gear up for the Sydney Motorsport Park Round, which is always epic.
- 0:49So I'm going to shut up.
- 0:51I'll hand the reins over to Cam Waters, who joined us on the short cast recently after his NASCAR appearance in California.
- 0:58Mark Winterbottom is on the panel today too.
- 1:01fitting he grew up right near smsp and my maniac mate david reynolds is back on the mic who knows where this will go enjoy the latest edition of drivers only
- 1:27Hello guys, welcome to episode two of Drivers Only.
- 1:30I've been called in, it's only 15 minutes from home, so I couldn't say no.
- 1:34Davey Reynolds is back, and we've got a mute button for Davey, just in case he gets too out of hand.
- 1:40And the superstar, Mr. Cam Waters, who doesn't have a team uniform, but he's got an iron shirt.
- 1:47Oh no, he doesn't have an iron shirt.
- 1:48That's ironing itself with body heat.
- 1:50Oh really?
- 1:50Yeah.
- 1:51Body iron.
- 1:52Well, we went... We like his shirt.
- 1:54We went... You're good at this.
- 1:56We'll talk about Townsville, right?
- 1:57Because that's the last race that we did.
- 2:00We might as well start with Cam because he was a rock star.
- 2:04Yeah.
- 2:04You won the Saturday.
- 2:05Won the Saturday.
- 2:06Won practice.
- 2:07You won practice.
- 2:07Both practices.
- 2:09Both practices.
- 2:10You won pole.
- 2:10It was a good weekend.
- 2:12Really good weekend.
- 2:12Pole position.
- 2:13Was it two poles or one?
- 2:14One.
- 2:15One.
- 2:15Just missed out on Sunday.
- 2:16It was like .001 or something to LeBrock.
- 2:19You suck.
- 2:19You should have shaved your head.
- 2:20If you shaved his head.
- 2:21I know.
- 2:22If he pissed.
- 2:23Yeah.
- 2:23There's that.
- 2:24Bit of weight.
- 2:24Bit of weight.
- 2:25That cost me.
- 2:26Yeah.
- 2:26So what are you going to do different?
- 2:29I'm going to go to the toilet in Sydney before every session.
- 2:31It's such a good weekend.
- 2:32Tell me.
- 2:34Well, we had a really good Perth.
- 2:36Then we sucked in Darwin and then kind of worked out what we did between the two and what have been good and bad this year.
- 2:42Tell me.
- 2:43What'd you do?
- 2:43Exactly.
- 2:44What front spring?
- 2:45It's all secrets.
- 2:46It's all secrets.
- 2:47We just rolled out of the truck and it was super fast.
- 2:50From the first lap in practice, you kind of know if you're on or not right.
- 2:53You do, yes.
- 2:54And things felt like a bit of a jet and probably made it a little bit better through practice as well.
- 2:58Yeah.
- 2:59From that point, I just kind of hoped the weekend was going to keep rolling, right?
- 3:02And yeah, cool to obviously get the pole Saturday and the win on Saturday.
- 3:07That was a mega race.
- 3:08I had so much fun, all the battles and stuff up the front, the bit of rain and whatnot.
- 3:13And yeah, Sunday, we're still pacey, just got beaten by probably a bit quicker strategy.
- 3:18You didn't take each other out either.
- 3:20Why are you looking at me?
- 3:21No, no.
- 3:22Chaz and I.
- 3:22Him and Chaz, yeah.
- 3:23We've grown up.
- 3:24I thought there was two easy positions when I saw him on the big screen.
- 3:27I was going to move forward two straight away.
- 3:30Yeah.
- 3:30No, we actually raced pretty good together.
- 3:32It was pretty surprising, to be honest.
- 3:33Could change.
- 3:34Could you see Will Brown coming?
- 3:36And was your team telling you that he was coming?
- 3:38Because obviously when you fight each other, you go slower.
- 3:41Yeah, so that middle stint, I caught Chas towards the end and the gap to Davison was like seven seconds when we started it.
- 3:48And then by the end of the...
- 3:49He's on you.
- 3:50He passed you.
- 3:50He was on to us.
- 3:50I'm like, what is going on, guys?
- 3:52And then, yeah, the last stint, similar thing with Will Brown.
- 3:55I knew he was coming but had...
- 3:58Had probably a bit more car speed in that last stint, a bit more tyre over Chas, so tried to get it done a bit sooner.
- 4:03And, yeah, I knew Will had to pass a few cars as well.
- 4:07I don't know how.
- 4:08We struggled.
- 4:08When we followed cars, we struggled massively.
- 4:11Really?
- 4:11But then when you were following Chas...
- 4:12I was struggling by myself too.
- 4:15You just struggled through life, mate.
- 4:17But you guys could pass and still truck on.
- 4:20It was pretty impressive, wasn't it?
- 4:21I thought it was one of the best races too that we've seen for a long time.
- 4:25Yeah, my car was unreal.
- 4:26It was really good.
- 4:27So I could race and I didn't really drop off any pace after I passed someone where Darwin, it was the opposite.
- 4:34I'd get behind someone and I'd just start going slow.
- 4:36Yeah, just blew the tyres off.
- 4:37I think it was a temperature thing.
- 4:39Blew everything off.
- 4:40We had that.
- 4:40We have that.
- 4:42When it rained though, like.
- 4:43My car got better.
- 4:44Did it?
- 4:44Yeah, it's like it cooled the tire down and away I went.
- 4:46It was awesome.
- 4:48We struggled, didn't we?
- 4:49When it rained a bit, like the tire was already.
- 4:51On the limit.
- 4:52On the limit.
- 4:52We were on the limit.
- 4:53Yeah.
- 4:53And then the tire made it worse.
- 4:55Did you have any moments in the wet?
- 4:56Nah, it was all pretty tame.
- 4:59Oh, okay.
- 4:59I don't know about you.
- 4:59Righto, mate.
- 5:00Yeah, yeah.
- 5:00Nah, nah.
- 5:01I had plenty, but yeah, not Dave.
- 5:04Maybe you weren't trying hard enough.
- 5:06Probably wasn't trying hard enough.
- 5:08Um, yeah.
- 5:08Yeah, how were your weekends?
- 5:09Yeah, not very good.
- 5:10We rode out of the truck pretty average.
- 5:12Struggled for a lot of drive and didn't make it any better.
- 5:14You had a motor issue or something?
- 5:15Yeah, my motor sort of packed it in on Friday.
- 5:18We didn't work it out until Friday night.
- 5:19Yeah, cracked a cylinder head or something like that.
- 5:21Oh, right.
- 5:22Or cracked a piston.
- 5:22You got out of rides.
- 5:24Yeah, I got out of the last ride.
- 5:25You did three rides and then parked it.
- 5:27So I pulled the button off at pit lane and then smoked, pissed out, and I was like, oh.
- 5:31A few big, like, overrevs, make sure she was going properly?
- 5:34No, I didn't know.
- 5:35I didn't know the whole rule if, you know, if you've got a weak engine, you're actually supposed to make it blow up.
- 5:39Yeah.
- 5:40Finish it.
- 5:40Then you get a new one.
- 5:41It's not out of your, like, allocation or something like that.
- 5:45I think I just gave away a trade secret.
- 5:47I think we're all onto it, mate.
- 5:48I think you're all onto it anyway.
- 5:50And what about like...
- 5:51But yeah, like we rode out of the truck and had no drive, hey.
- 5:54And we were watching your car.
- 5:55Braking was a big issue too.
- 5:56It was braking and drive.
- 5:58We all sucked at it.
- 5:59Well, I sucked at it anyway.
- 6:00And the guys, we tried everything.
- 6:01Everything we could try still didn't make a difference.
- 6:04So whatever was inherent in our car, we just couldn't fix it.
- 6:07Yeah, right.
- 6:08So we're watching your car in the shootout.
- 6:09And I was like...
- 6:11We always sit down and watch the shootout as a team regardless.
- 6:14And it's like, I want my car to do that.
- 6:16I want it to do that.
- 6:17Yeah.
- 6:17We just still couldn't make it any better.
- 6:20There was one point you had good drive though, when you drove right up to the back of Will Brown.
- 6:24I thought that was... No, I wasn't deciding.
- 6:26You had really good drive at it too.
- 6:27Yeah.
- 6:28You just passed him.
- 6:29Your drive was unbelievable.
- 6:30So we started like 16th and 17th on the grid, and all year he's been hosing me off the start.
- 6:38And we actually got first time in ages.
- 6:40We were side by side.
- 6:41We had a drag race down to the bridge.
- 6:42Like that was the actual race.
- 6:45in our team.
- 6:45That was a pinchless.
- 6:46We're going.
- 6:47And it was pretty much a dead heat.
- 6:48It was identical.
- 6:49Dead heat.
- 6:50Was it?
- 6:50A complete dead heat.
- 6:52There was no, it was a dead, dead heat zero to 100 times.
- 6:55So what's the guy who took Will Brown out?
- 6:58Well, I didn't take him out per se.
- 6:59Like he took himself out.
- 7:01He said it was your fault.
- 7:02Well, no, he didn't.
- 7:07So what happened was, where did he start?
- 7:10Just in front of us.
- 7:12Or behind us?
- 7:13No, he was behind us.
- 7:14He was behind us.
- 7:14Yep.
- 7:15And we're going into one.
- 7:17He was on...
- 7:18Someone hit me and then I ran a bit wide through one, so he got the cutback and got past me.
- 7:25But he said he thought he had enough drive to clear me, but I wasn't.
- 7:28I was just hanging on the edge.
- 7:29And Mark was on the inside.
- 7:30Will was in the middle.
- 7:31He was the...
- 7:33the meat and the sandwich.
- 7:35And I was on the outside, the other piece of bread, and we're going down to turn three.
- 7:39And I was like half there, and Will didn't see me.
- 7:41He just come across and then...
- 7:42So you started behind you.
- 7:43You said you had the best start ever.
- 7:45No, I didn't have the best start.
- 7:46We had the same start.
- 7:48Oh, so you both had bad starts.
- 7:49We both had the same.
- 7:51To be fair, I think we were looking at each other so much.
- 7:53Wondering who won, going through two.
- 7:57I was only concentrating on people around me.
- 7:59And we're like, hey.
- 8:01But then we, yeah.
- 8:03We got him.
- 8:04We got him.
- 8:05I got to the bridge and I thought I won.
- 8:06I was like fist pumping him.
- 8:07It was so funny.
- 8:10So you're a championship contender now.
- 8:12Oh, that's a big call, mate.
- 8:14What's your limit?
- 8:15How was your weekend?
- 8:16You were fast in practice.
- 8:17You were in the press conference.
- 8:18Yeah, I was in the conference with you.
- 8:22Anyway, not about our weekends.
- 8:24What do you reckon about the new car?
- 8:26You reckon it's easier to race?
- 8:27Because that race...
- 8:28The new car.
- 8:29Yeah, like the Gen 3 car versus... Yeah, I think you can follow a lot closer.
- 8:33Because that race on Saturday, like, we do sometimes got criticism for...
- 8:38for racing, but that's one of the best races we've seen for a long time.
- 8:43You can follow better.
- 8:44100%.
- 8:45You're probably half the gap to what the old car would be to this car, I think, which helps being able to break and outbrake someone or lunge someone.
- 8:54I think still probably a little bit of tyre stuff we need to work on.
- 8:57Like what?
- 8:58Like Darwin, it was just all so sensitive to heat.
- 9:01I couldn't pass anyone there, but then you go to Townsville and it's not as hot.
- 9:06A little bit cooler.
- 9:07Corner-specific too.
- 9:08Corner-specific and, you know, you could race awesome.
- 9:10So, I think, yeah, probably one of the best racers in the Gen 3 era.
- 9:15What do you guys think?
- 9:16Well, I think they're still improving it.
- 9:17Like, I think last year the brakes were an issue, but that's… That seems to be fixed.
- 9:21It's a lot better, yeah.
- 9:22So, good, really good technical director there last year.
- 9:25Is that good that we pinched him?
- 9:27Right.
- 9:28So you got all the secrets.
- 9:30And then we lost Teddy.
- 9:31You lost Teddy from Tickford.
- 9:33Yeah.
- 9:33Yeah.
- 9:35Teddy's doing good in supercars.
- 9:37I'm rating him.
- 9:38What do you guys think?
- 9:40Have you gone a lot better since he's gone, man?
- 9:42Yeah, I was just thinking that.
- 9:43All the secrets, you reckon?
- 9:44Does he wear a temperature under that watch?
- 9:46Well, I've actually been up and down a lot.
- 9:47So he hasn't been helping us a lot, if he has been.
- 9:50It's just one of those years, it's so hard.
- 9:52You turn up every weekend and you don't know how you're going to go, how you're going to roll out of the truck.
- 9:57It's so hard, isn't it?
- 9:58How are you going to go the next round?
- 10:01The cars are just so sensitive, right?
- 10:03They're super sensitive, and there's still heaps of variation in them, so everyone can get lost engineering-wise, and there's so many variations within setup that, you know, you can have a car that does things a lot different to the Loki racing, but you achieve the same lap time.
- 10:15It's quite cool.
- 10:16Yeah, everyone was thinking, you know, these new cars are going to be like a Porsche, right, where everyone's got the same and end up at the same setups, but...
- 10:22It's nearly like the opposite at the moment.
- 10:24I think the cars are so sensitive.
- 10:26You have some teams nail it one weekend and then nowhere the next.
- 10:30It's actually quite interesting how up and down it's been with them.
- 10:33I still think we need some small variation between not as in different tires or anything, but just like a DRS system.
- 10:42I think that would be really easy to make, really easy to implement, and promote passing.
- 10:47It would just promote more passing and promote more chaos.
- 10:50People want to watch chaos.
- 10:51They don't want to watch.
- 10:52We just come out of a weekend.
- 10:53I think it was like 61 passes for a race.
- 10:56Like that's incredible.
- 10:56Yeah, but that's one race in how long?
- 10:58You did 60 of them.
- 10:59Yeah, but that's one race in how many races we had.
- 11:03But in Brazil, they run a throttle map that runs at 70% flat out, like when you're cruising around and has pushed a pass button.
- 11:12And it's actually, it's artificial, but it's...
- 11:15It's actually really cool because what you do, it's strategic as well as where you pass someone.
- 11:20There's a two-minute delay and you only get a certain amount of pushes per race.
- 11:24I'm already confused.
- 11:25Per race.
- 11:25I like that idea.
- 11:26I prefer that.
- 11:27So when you're following someone, you can't use it on a restart.
- 11:29So there's certain criteria that they hit.
- 11:34But if you press it out of a corner, say Interlagos, the last corner, you get it for, I think it was 15 seconds.
- 11:40You would go 20, 30 kilometers faster than the car.
- 11:44So you'd pass it.
- 11:45But then they could press the button and react on the next straight and pass down the next straight.
- 11:50But then it's two minutes stop time until you can press it again.
- 11:55So it's the same as NASCAR, isn't it?
- 11:56They've got a push-to-pass system.
- 11:58No.
- 11:58They don't.
- 11:59IndyCar does, doesn't it?
- 12:00IndyCar does, yeah.
- 12:01But it works really well.
- 12:02How was NASCAR anyway?
- 12:04It was awesome.
- 12:05The cars are probably pretty similar to the Gen 2 cars.
- 12:09Yeah, really?
- 12:10The weight, they're quite heavy.
- 12:11Yeah.
- 12:13Lots of power, big tire, not that much aero though.
- 12:16So they're pretty loose, but, you know, the braking was much the same as what we race here.
- 12:20So quite cool.
- 12:21I thought they had really small brakes.
- 12:22What about the H pattern?
- 12:24That was sequential.
- 12:25Oh, sequential.
- 12:25Yeah, so the truck was a H pattern, but the cup car is sequential.
- 12:28Same box as what we run, but it was a five-speed.
- 12:31We had no gear cut, so you got to lift off the throttle.
- 12:33So it was cool.
- 12:35The racing over there was probably the biggest thing, like...
- 12:39There's no rules.
- 12:40You can bump someone or move someone out the way, but there's a level of respect amongst the drivers.
- 12:45So if I hit you, I know you're going to probably hit me back.
- 12:49So you try and race cleanly, where if you're just holding me up, you'd probably expect to get moved out the way.
- 12:55So I thought that was quite cool how they race over there.
- 12:57You kind of expect that in our series, don't you?
- 12:58Yeah.
- 12:59Imagine if you were just white lining it for laps at a time.
- 13:02You're going to get drilled.
- 13:03You do that, but then you half expect a five-second penalty.
- 13:05So for me, that's probably the biggest thing.
- 13:08Do you think we need to be more relaxed on that side?
- 13:11Well, yeah.
- 13:11Talking, I guess, about our series, I think that would be awesome to implement.
- 13:16Just get rid of all the penalties and open it up.
- 13:18Just to hit this to kill list.
- 13:20You want chaos and carnage, Dave?
- 13:22That's probably the best way to do it, right?
- 13:24I'm for that because that's what I want to watch.
- 13:25It's an entertainment sport.
- 13:26It is.
- 13:27I think that could be a cool addition.
- 13:30What are you looking at me for?
- 13:32What are you drinking, mate?
- 13:35I'm drinking water and salt out of a jar.
- 13:39Everyone gives me shit about this.
- 13:41I think it's fantastic.
- 13:43It's just salt.
- 13:44Water and salt.
- 13:45Well, I'm not going to drive around with a cup, am I?
- 13:48This is my mobile device I use to drink water.
- 13:52If I drive around with a cup, it's going to spill everywhere and go everywhere.
- 13:56It's got a lid.
- 13:56What about the rest of the world, just a bottle of water?
- 13:59Well, there's plastic.
- 14:00I'm trying to avoid plastic.
- 14:01So back on racing, we're all hydrated over here.
- 14:05What would you pick?
- 14:06Car, track, event in the world?
- 14:09Where would we go?
- 14:10First of all, I reckon what about a supercar event with a wish list?
- 14:13And then what about a NASCAR event with a wish list with those cars?
- 14:17And then any car wish list?
- 14:19So if I was driving a supercar, I'd love to race in Macau.
- 14:23Have our series race in Macau.
- 14:24I reckon that'd be completely insane.
- 14:25That'd be unreal.
- 14:26Of course you're a gambler, though.
- 14:29I'm loving the American stuff at the moment.
- 14:31So I think doing the Chicago race in a supercar, that would be cool.
- 14:37Even Sonoma, what I did, that track was unreal.
- 14:39So much undulation and heaps of passing.
- 14:41I think our cars would be sick there.
- 14:43Other than that, I'd probably love to do Monaco.
- 14:46I don't think it would be that good racing-wise.
- 14:48What, in our cars?
- 14:49We would pass.
- 14:49In our cars.
- 14:50It would be better in our cars.
- 14:51It would be a lot better in our cars, but I reckon that would be unreal.
- 14:54Yeah, it would be.
- 14:55I don't know.
- 14:56It'll never happen.
- 14:57Are you thinking about holiday destinations?
- 14:59Pretty much.
- 15:00Yeah, I'd love to check out Monaco.
- 15:02It's too expensive to go, so we'll go with the sport.
- 15:04100%.
- 15:05Monaco's a pretty sleepy town.
- 15:08Is it?
- 15:08It's boring.
- 15:08Yeah.
- 15:09What about you, Frosty?
- 15:09That's pretty cool, though.
- 15:11Oh, I like street racers.
- 15:11I reckon I'd like Chicago.
- 15:13Bang Sen. Have you heard of Bang Sen?
- 15:15Who?
- 15:16It's like a Thailand.
- 15:17Bang what?
- 15:18Bang Sen, I think it's called.
- 15:19It's like a Thailand street race.
- 15:21It's completely out of control.
- 15:22It's like Monaco, just Bang Sen. Be pretty cool.
- 15:26What about Bansdale Street Grand Prix?
- 15:28Go-karts.
- 15:28The go-kart race.
- 15:29Yeah.
- 15:30You had a pretty good- We were talking about that the other day.
- 15:31I hit a hay bale there and it really hurt.
- 15:33Where was that?
- 15:34Bansdale Street Grand Prix.
- 15:35Did you do that?
- 15:36Didn't you hit something pretty
- 15:38Yeah, it wasn't an apex on that day, that's for sure.
- 15:41Oh, that was great.
- 15:42Nearly came in half.
- 15:42Yeah, it was great.
- 15:43Yeah, yeah.
- 15:44Yeah.
- 15:45Nearly lost your jewels, right?
- 15:46Yeah, tell us about it.
- 15:47Nearly.
- 15:47Didn't you feel like a warming sensation?
- 15:48That was pre-kids.
- 15:49Is that right?
- 15:50You felt like it was pre-kids, like a warming sensation?
- 15:54No.
- 15:54Warming?
- 15:54No, it definitely wasn't a warming sensation.
- 15:56I thought you felt like, because it cut the car pretty much weird.
- 15:59So it cut the car in half.
- 16:00which was an issue because the roll cages are quite thick, and it nicked the bottom of the seat.
- 16:05So it took like a big chunk out of the seat.
- 16:08So the seat's about 30 mil.
- 16:10I'm not 30 mil, Dave.
- 16:12But the seat's about 30 mil, and it took about 20 mil chunk out of it.
- 16:17So it was only about 10 mil between that grate and...
- 16:21So it was just the grate that cut your car?
- 16:24Yeah.
- 16:24So the grate stood up or something?
- 16:26So in true workmanship, one guy did his job really well and one guy did his job really poorly.
- 16:31So he welded one end of the grate really well and the other guy must have been on smoker.
- 16:35He did a terrible job.
- 16:36So flung up, stuck in the welding bits that were done properly.
- 16:41And out of 34 cars back then, this is where odds are.
- 16:46percentages.
- 16:4833 cars got past it and the car ahead of me, who was John Bauer, flicked it up and I was the next car behind it.
- 16:54So out of 34 people, I was the...
- 16:57Anyway, so we went shopping on Sunday.
- 16:58We went to the markets.
- 16:59Because his car was done.
- 17:00It was done.
- 17:01It was like $200,000 worth of damage.
- 17:03Oh, shit.
- 17:04And then Larco kept that great in his office because he's like, this cost me $200,000.
- 17:08He wasn't letting it go.
- 17:10He put it in his office as a memento.
- 17:13You walk in and...
- 17:14There's the great.
- 17:15What year was that?
- 17:16Yeah.
- 17:172005 2005 Yeah, that was a really cool track That track was Yeah, that was really cool That long turn One corner That'd be terrible in our car It was so pushy But it was But the back straight was 300k It was so cool Yeah, right Really How many rounds have you done?
- 17:34You'd be going on All-time high, wouldn't you?
- 17:36I'm getting Passing Lowndes here, wouldn't you?
- 17:38Getting there What's Lowndes?
- 17:40I think he's 670 something 670 So what are you at?
- 17:45630 or something?
- 17:46So what round can you like take over his mantle?
- 17:49Well, I don't know because he keeps doing Buddy Enduro, so it's killing him, isn't it?
- 17:52Oh, yeah, he keeps getting like maybe two.
- 17:53Pushing it out.
- 17:54That's two a year.
- 17:55Yeah.
- 17:55Yeah, it just keeps coming back.
- 17:56So it keeps like the benchmark keeps moving.
- 17:59Question, guys, change of subject.
- 18:01Who's impressed you this year?
- 18:03Who's impressed me?
- 18:05Myself.
- 18:06Myself.
- 18:06Why?
- 18:07No one.
- 18:07No one impresses me.
- 18:09Who has, if I was to talk about something?
- 18:11Maybe Ryan Wood.
- 18:12I reckon he's actually done a good job.
- 18:14Would he?
- 18:14After he's like baptism of fire in the first round, he's actually done really good ever since then.
- 18:20So, yeah.
- 18:20He had a cool race with him in Perth.
- 18:22When you think about the amount of limited experiences he has had, it is...
- 18:28It's quite cool to watch someone so young come through the field, done like one year of DVS and then straight in the main series and then he's racing us and it feels like he's been doing it for years.
- 18:38Yeah.
- 18:39What are you, mate?
- 18:40I reckon Matt Payne, like you obviously race with him.
- 18:42Yeah, of course.
- 18:44Yeah, he's in a good car, but he just seems unfazed.
- 18:48He's one of those blokes that doesn't overthink anything.
- 18:50He's half asleep, that's why.
- 18:51He's half asleep.
- 18:52He's half asleep.
- 18:53But he's driving.
- 18:53Well, he was supposed to be here, wasn't he?
- 18:55Isn't that right?
- 18:57Yeah, he was.
- 18:58So I wonder what Matt Payne is doing right now.
- 19:00He actually wants to play paddle ball.
- 19:02Really?
- 19:02He's been watching too much Monaco, but he wants to play some paddle ball.
- 19:06There's a couple of courts under the Baldy Bridge, you know, like tennis, but the paddle ball tennis thing.
- 19:12Yeah, anyway.
- 19:13Who was the most funnest teammate you've had?
- 19:15Funnest.
- 19:17Still got him, mate.
- 19:18I love you.
- 19:19It's a bit awkward because Cam's here.
- 19:22I'll say you too, Dave.
- 19:23I'm sorry, Matthew.
- 19:24Stop.
- 19:24You don't have to say me.
- 19:25You're a unit, mate.
- 19:26Besides me.
- 19:26Besides me.
- 19:27I think we all have fun, don't we?
- 19:29We had some good times.
- 19:30Tickford.
- 19:31Yeah.
- 19:32Glenn Lindsay.
- 19:33Glenn Lindsay.
- 19:34Oh, my goodness.
- 19:35What an icon.
- 19:36They've been lucky.
- 19:37I've had awesome teammates since I went in, obviously, with you and Chaz.
- 19:42Had Bridie, you, Stunaway.
- 19:45Obviously, Tom now.
- 19:48He's a unit.
- 19:49I've been pretty lucky.
- 19:49Of course, if you had... That's about it, isn't it?
- 19:53DBS guys.
- 19:54Oh, DBS, yeah.
- 19:55Gas pedal, LeBrock.
- 19:56Gas pedal, yeah.
- 19:57Gas pedal, Gary.
- 19:58Kordo, he's a bloody legend.
- 20:00He's pretty funny, eh?
- 20:01Story time with Kordo was unreal.
- 20:03So do you like... Do you know how these days, how we can't pair our man-drowers up?
- 20:08Do you wish they reversed that?
- 20:10Um...
- 20:10Not really.
- 20:11I think it must be too hard because everyone's got their own sponsors.
- 20:15Yeah, exactly.
- 20:15And then it takes half the cars out of the race.
- 20:17But it'd be really cool if I could drive with him or I could drive with you.
- 20:20But it gives the guys value as well because like, you know, Carouse and… But that's probably what the team owners don't want.
- 20:26I know, but I think it's good because it gives them guys value as well instead of being in the second car or whatever you call it.
- 20:35And then on any day, anyone can win.
- 20:37I reckon the sports, like going to Bathurst, there's no favorite.
- 20:41There's everyone who thinks we'll win.
- 20:44And what about how, I think that changed the rule this year, correct me if I'm wrong, but we have to start the car.
- 20:48There is a rule, yeah.
- 20:49Is that happening?
- 20:50I think, I don't know if it is, but they've been talking about it.
- 20:53Yeah.
- 20:54I actually hate start.
- 20:56I like watching the co-driver.
- 20:57Yes, it is.
- 20:58I'm always talking the engineer in to put the co-driver in.
- 21:01Yeah.
- 21:02My last engineer wouldn't get in without the stress.
- 21:04He wouldn't start Caruso.
- 21:05He's like, you start regularly, you do it.
- 21:08And then Caruso goes, give me a chance, give me a chance.
- 21:10Sand down.
- 21:11He did.
- 21:11He did a 3-4, not to 100.
- 21:13Holy shit.
- 21:13He passed two rows.
- 21:15He's starting the Bathurst.
- 21:16Well, maybe not, but yeah.
- 21:18Yeah.
- 21:19He's like, just give me the chance.
- 21:20And when he did it, he was the best start we did all year.
- 21:24So do you think that's a good rule or a bad rule?
- 21:27I think it's a bad rule, yeah.
- 21:29I think it's a bad one.
- 21:30I think so.
- 21:32Because there's many different reasons, but I understand why they're trying to do it from a TV perspective.
- 21:36It's like the biggest event of the year.
- 21:37They're all talking about it.
- 21:39And then there's these blokes that aren't part of our championship full-time anymore starting the biggest race of the year.
- 21:44So I kind of get it.
- 21:45But for us, it sort of hems everyone into the same sort of strategy.
- 21:48And it's really hard to go off strategy and do something different.
- 21:51It may make them pit early though.
- 21:52You know, like Bathurst for 12 to 15.
- 21:55There's that early one.
- 21:56Yeah, there's...
- 21:57Might change that and then some guys might do 22 laps or whatever.
- 22:00Like I said, there's pros and cons to everything.
- 22:03We don't really know because we haven't done it yet.
- 22:05So, yeah.
- 22:08I don't really want to start anyway.
- 22:09You got Moff.
- 22:10Moff again, yeah.
- 22:10Moff dog.
- 22:11He's a legend.
- 22:12He's so cool.
- 22:13He just comes, sits in my car, doesn't change anything.
- 22:15Doesn't care.
- 22:16Does a good job.
- 22:16What a legend.
- 22:17Yeah, he's a mad dog.
- 22:18No seat insert?
- 22:19Nah.
- 22:19That's what Luffy's like, isn't he?
- 22:21That's the best.
- 22:21I won't let him do it as a seat.
- 22:25But if you can get someone that sits in your seat, it's half the battle done.
- 22:28100%.
- 22:28Yeah, it's good.
- 22:29What are you looking at me for?
- 22:30It definitely doesn't happen in my car.
- 22:32Hey?
- 22:33It doesn't happen in my car.
- 22:34You got a booster seat.
- 22:35I got cruise.
- 22:37Hey, we're talking about things that we could change, obviously, push to pass and DRS.
- 22:41What do you guys think of a NASCAR-style playoffs for our championship?
- 22:45Oh, I reckon that's pretty lame.
- 22:47Lame?
- 22:48Yeah.
- 22:48Because the championship is done by the championship year.
- 22:52You shouldn't have to add any extra complexity to that.
- 22:57I find it hard to follow.
- 22:58Yeah.
- 22:59All that playoff stuff.
- 23:00Yeah, same.
- 23:00The playoff-like.
- 23:01Same in ice hockey.
- 23:02There's the playoff series and all that basketball stuff.
- 23:04I don't understand it.
- 23:05Yeah.
- 23:06But if the issue...
- 23:08Our sport's pretty complex and the simpler you can make it, the easier it is to follow.
- 23:11I guess if you race through the year, right, say we call it, if we get back to 14 rounds, if it happens, first nine races, it's all about getting in the playoffs.
- 23:20And then the last five, it's all our big races, right?
- 23:23Sandown, Bathurst, Gold Coast, Adelaide, all the big ones.
- 23:26So you've got more people in the hunt.
- 23:28You're probably going to have more eyes on the sport potentially because they're the big races.
- 23:32So how does it work though?
- 23:34Like if, because our sport's dominated by certain, you know, like you might go a year like say Giz and Brody where they win a lot of the races.
- 23:45Yeah.
- 23:46So there'll only be two blokes in the playoff or how do you, none of the top 10 or top nine.
- 23:51Yeah, like last year.
- 23:53There was more people to win races than just those two at the start of the year.
- 23:55So the first, say, nine races, whoever wins a race, you're in the playoffs.
- 24:00Oh, regardless.
- 24:00You get a ticket.
- 24:01You get a ticket.
- 24:02So even if you finish last everywhere and win one?
- 24:05You're in.
- 24:06So how many places have you got?
- 24:07I don't know.
- 24:08This is surmising.
- 24:09This is not page 10.
- 24:11Yeah, maybe.
- 24:12take something like that and then you eliminate them through the last four rounds.
- 24:16So everyone, all your greens on Saturday.
- 24:18Oh, yeah.
- 24:18You're in Sunday.
- 24:19Everyone does funny stuff like that just to get in.
- 24:22You're going to have a few roughies in it racing for the championship end of the year.
- 24:25I don't know.
- 24:26I think it'd be cool.
- 24:27And it's a big race.
- 24:28You're talking me into it.
- 24:29And then process of elimination and then, but then Gold Coast, Bathurst are enduro races.
- 24:37So your co-driver could determine the.
- 24:39Yeah, that could influence it for sure.
- 24:41Which it does now, but not as heavy as that potentially.
- 24:44Yeah.
- 24:45Well, you could even have Bathurst as more of a standalone ride if you didn't want to have part of, say, the playoffs.
- 24:50But I think being one of the biggest races of the year, it's cool to have that element.
- 24:55You're selling it.
- 24:56Selling it?
- 24:57So you're on board?
- 24:57Are you being told to sell it or are you actually just leaving it?
- 24:59No, I think it's cool.
- 25:00I think it's cool.
- 25:01Something different, spice it up.
- 25:03So if someone like Gizzy or something does...
- 25:09one off round at Chicago.
- 25:10Yeah.
- 25:11He wins it.
- 25:12He qualifies for the playoffs.
- 25:14I think you have to be a championship regular.
- 25:16So a wild card can come in.
- 25:18Yeah.
- 25:19Yeah.
- 25:19Imagine they have all these wild cards popping up.
- 25:21Win a race and then you're in.
- 25:22Yeah, you're in.
- 25:23Back in the old days.
- 25:24Yeah.
- 25:24A lot of privateers and that.
- 25:26Yeah.
- 25:27Yeah, it'd be cool.
- 25:27And then we could just throw in like a speedway race in there as well.
- 25:32No.
- 25:33He asked me to say that.
- 25:34Sure.
- 25:36Have you won a Speedway race?
- 25:38Did you have your first win the other day?
- 25:40Not in a sprint car.
- 25:41No.
- 25:42No, I've come second a few times.
- 25:44Have you had any big crashes?
- 25:45Not too big.
- 25:46You're trying hard enough then.
- 25:48I'm trying hard enough for sure.
- 25:50I've been on my lid.
- 25:51Have you?
- 25:52Yeah.
- 25:53Yep.
- 25:54I couldn't.
- 25:54I'd hate to race one of them.
- 25:56They replaced the wing and go again.
- 25:57They're unreal.
- 25:58But I'd hate to race one of them.
- 25:59You know why?
- 26:00Why?
- 26:00Because don't you sit on the bloody like.
- 26:04The drive shaft.
- 26:05The drive shaft.
- 26:06You sit on that and it goes between you?
- 26:07You do, but it's not... And what if that was to, like, fail and, like, and tear shreds and then just cut your legs off?
- 26:12Well, it's got stuff around it to hold it in.
- 26:14Yeah, I know, but, like, I don't trust that.
- 26:18mate no i wouldn't be just put your foot flat you'll be right nah just don't crash that's the key to it what's your wish list then so speedway you're like multi you got a lot going on at the moment i've got a fair bit going on so what would you choose out of the couple of events so nascar daytona speedway knoxville
- 26:43I might as well say Supercross somewhere because we're throwing another category.
- 26:45We'll throw out the Supercross.
- 26:47What are you more possible to do?
- 26:48PT car, 24-hour spot.
- 26:49Yeah, that's a good one too.
- 26:51Because Knoxville would be cool.
- 26:54I'm kind of... Why?
- 26:55It's the mecca of speedway.
- 26:57So if you're saying nothing about... Spring car race.
- 27:00Anything.
- 27:00Yeah, so what's on your wish list?
- 27:03Yeah, pretty well all of them.
- 27:05I'm just trying to tick them all off my bucket list, right?
- 27:07Do them all.
- 27:07But I think Daytona, I think that would be unreal just to be part of that.
- 27:13100% want to go do Knoxville though.
- 27:15So I've actually kind of been talking to a team over there a little bit about trying to do some racing at Knoxville, but not straight into the Knoxville Nationals, trying to do some club shows and stuff because it's so much faster.
- 27:25It's fast, yeah.
- 27:27Yeah, so you're kind of just starting again like...
- 27:29Because the speeds are so much quicker than what we do here.
- 27:31I went there years ago and watched the Knoxville Nationals with Brooke Tattnall was there.
- 27:36Oh, yeah?
- 27:37I don't know that name.
- 27:38But yeah, Brooke Tattnall, Skip Jackson, all those blokes back in the day.
- 27:43And it was like 160 mile an hour fast.
- 27:46Yeah.
- 27:46Ridiculous.
- 27:47Really?
- 27:47But a cool event.
- 27:48Middle of nowhere, but yeah, cool event.
- 27:51They're so fast and when the trucks prep ride and everything, you just hold it flat.
- 27:55You don't lift at all.
- 27:56Really?
- 27:56You just hold it flat?
- 27:57Dead flat?
- 27:58They will stand.
- 27:59And the thing's pinned to the ground, throws you in the side of the seat.
- 28:02You wouldn't experience anything like that in any circuit racing car.
- 28:06On mud.
- 28:06What do you reckon?
- 28:07Another idea...
- 28:08Is like we've got the playoffs, but another idea, and we were chatting about it the other day, put like two options.
- 28:17We chat a lot.
- 28:18Put the mechanic, have a mechanic race.
- 28:20Oh, a mechanics race.
- 28:21Oh, that would be funny.
- 28:21I reckon like I want to push for that really heavily.
- 28:23So you pick someone from the team that hasn't raced.
- 28:26You can't have someone who's got like a smallie or who has credentials back in the day.
- 28:30Yeah.
- 28:31Probably like the most, because they've got to fix it.
- 28:34So if they're super aggressive and whatever, they've got to fix it.
- 28:36But I reckon a mechanic from each team, a 10 lap race, and then that sets the grid for the...
- 28:46For us.
- 28:47For the main race, yeah.
- 28:47Well, what track could you do it at?
- 28:49Like, what's the most likeliest track you're not going to crash at?
- 28:52Adelaide.
- 28:52We'll do it at Adelaide, I think.
- 28:54So, straight out.
- 28:54I like part of that, but I think the engineers should qualify it.
- 28:58Because they give us shit cars occasionally.
- 29:01Right?
- 29:01So, they need to live and feel the shit car they give us.
- 29:03We're part of that, you know.
- 29:04We're part of the equation.
- 29:06But what happens when they drive it that doesn't understeer and they're really fast?
- 29:08Yeah, I know.
- 29:09Not going fast enough.
- 29:10Yeah.
- 29:10And then I reckon the flow onto that is that you land into a...
- 29:15destination, you get a higher car from East Coast Car Randalls, if you know you want a good one, and you roll straight to the track, and in whatever that car is, five-lap dash.
- 29:25Instead of doing a track walk, we do a five-lap dash in the higher car that sets the grid for the mechanics.
- 29:30What have you been smoking lately?
- 29:33I drink some of your water.
- 29:34Then the mechanics jump in, 10-lap dash, and then we start the feature race.
- 29:39I like it.
- 29:39Is this going to be like something that's... Is it televised?
- 29:42Yeah.
- 29:43I guarantee it would be.
- 29:44Apparently it is.
- 29:45God just told me it's going to be.
- 29:46But imagine that you get a Transit versus a buddy, someone in a little Swift or something, and whatever you get, you rock up in.
- 29:55It'll be like the days of Thunder scene, how they race the car to the...
- 29:59The rental cars.
- 30:00Yeah, that's unreal.
- 30:08Life in lane.
- 30:09Yes, that was my next sort of harebrained thing to discuss.
- 30:13Do you like it?
- 30:14I did.
- 30:15I did, yeah, I did.
- 30:16I hated it at the start of the year.
- 30:19Yeah, but now you love it.
- 30:20It's all right.
- 30:21Where are you?
- 30:21Are you... Third.
- 30:23What are we, sixth or something?
- 30:24Fifth.
- 30:25We're coming.
- 30:26Coming.
- 30:27We've been as high as third.
- 30:29Triple A. T8, Walkinshaw, us.
- 30:31You're close then.
- 30:32You'd be close.
- 30:33Rose, maybe?
- 30:34After that.
- 30:35Yeah, I think we're five points off Walkinshaw.
- 30:37But honestly, it is a good thing.
- 30:38It's something we talk about and it changes round to round and it creates variation, creates some sort of something to talk about, doesn't it?
- 30:45It's really cool because we drive down pit lane and we always don't know where we're going to be.
- 30:49So you actually have to concentrate.
- 30:51You see guys at Darwin.
- 30:52Yeah, exactly.
- 30:53Yeah, people are stuffing up.
- 30:54It's perfect.
- 30:55They missed the beatbox, yeah.
- 30:58They went past in qualifying.
- 30:59Yeah, that's right.
- 31:01Yeah.
- 31:02Keep trending.
- 31:02I didn't know that.
- 31:03That's awesome.
- 31:04That's what it's made to do.
- 31:05I think it's been a good thing this year, the whole life hit lane.
- 31:08I wish we did it earlier.
- 31:10Yeah.
- 31:11It's just like something small, right?
- 31:14And this is for TV as well.
- 31:15You know how the green flag goes for practice or qualifying or whatever?
- 31:21Why do we have to wait for the next, say I'm behind you, why do I have to wait for you to go?
- 31:26Why can't we just all go together?
- 31:29Pull into pit lane and just drive out.
- 31:32They'll look cool for TV, plus we get more track time.
- 31:36I only see benefits, so I don't see many negatives.
- 31:39Do you think you're going to pass everyone, or do you just think it'll look cool?
- 31:42Well, it just gets us out on the track easier.
- 31:44People just push back and box you in, don't they?
- 31:46No, but at the start, at the start of the session, we all have to wait, and it's just really slow and monotonous.
- 31:53Why can't we just...
- 31:55button off as soon as it goes green, goes green on a dash and we just get going.
- 31:58I feel like this year, like the practices have been all over the joint, right?
- 32:01Like we've done 90 minutes, we've done 45, we've done practices on Saturday and Sunday.
- 32:06Like what do you guys think of that?
- 32:08Are we nailing it or are we?
- 32:10Oh, practice is practice.
- 32:11I think we don't do enough to start with, especially when we roll it off the pace.
- 32:16There's not enough practice in the day to sort of fix your day.
- 32:19Um, but
- 32:20like every situation creates a variance I suppose so you know an hour long session one hour long session is completely different to two half hour sessions you know two half hour sessions you get to you get to sit down think about it go through some data have come up with some ideas make some larger changes if you want to and come back and have a swing at it nine times out of ten probably doesn't do much but
- 32:42Um, you know, an hour session, you don't have time to think like that.
- 32:45You got to think on your feet and make quick, small, decisive changes.
- 32:49And it really comes down to how many sets of tires we have to practice and what type of, what type of track we're going to as far as deg and all that sort of stuff.
- 32:56So, you know, if we do an hour practice at, uh, Sydney to Motorsport Park where we're going to next week, it's completely useless because, you know, the track's so bad.
- 33:03We don't have enough tires.
- 33:05There's going to be a lot of downtime for TV.
- 33:07So, you know, shorter, sharper, shorter.
- 33:10practice sessions would be better there because, you know, the deg's so bad, every lap's, you know, tense apart, you know, you're not going to learn much.
- 33:18So, you know, I don't even, what is the practice next week?
- 33:2190 minutes.
- 33:22Oh.
- 33:22Friday night.
- 33:23Oh, Friday night?
- 33:24Yeah.
- 33:24Yeah, that's quite cool actually.
- 33:25Yeah, something different.
- 33:265.30 or something, 6 o'clock.
- 33:27What do you think?
- 33:28Do you like it or...?
- 33:30Well, you need more tyres, I think.
- 33:32Like, you need more tyres.
- 33:34100%.
- 33:34And then, but they've done a good job of implementing some with the handbags and all that sort of stuff.
- 33:40Yeah, that was good.
- 33:41There's definitely benefits.
- 33:42Because remember back in the day there was no handbags and everyone just used to save tyres for the weekend.
- 33:47And there was, Friday practice was like,
- 33:49No, it didn't mean shit.
- 33:50Yeah, took a lotto.
- 33:51Yeah.
- 33:51Yeah.
- 33:51But I think, you know, even races, we use greens now in the race because you have to try and maximize the result.
- 33:58Previously, we'd keep greens for, you know, like back in the day for practice.
- 34:04But, yeah, 90 minutes goes pretty quick because some of the changes on the car take a long time.
- 34:10That's the hard part.
- 34:10So if it changes 30 minutes...
- 34:13you actually just sit there where there's small practice sessions in time, big gap in the middle.
- 34:18You make a big change.
- 34:19And I don't know, there's pros and cons.
- 34:21There are always pros and cons for it, no matter what you do.
- 34:24But when you roll out fast, like Darwin with us, we rolled out and it's like, what do you want to do?
- 34:27And you go, oh, just...
- 34:29I don't know, just sit here for a bit.
- 34:31Cut and polish it.
- 34:31Cut and polish it.
- 34:33Time sheet.
- 34:34But like, and then you're all out of Townsville and you're just tinkering.
- 34:36So if it's 90 minutes, probably too long because you're in a window already.
- 34:41One thing that I don't really like is we test, right?
- 34:44We just go to Winton and, you know, the Queensland teams, they just go to QR.
- 34:49What if we banned that, but we had like a full test day after an event?
- 34:53After an event, not before?
- 34:54Yeah, after an event.
- 34:56So, you know, the Monday after, you know, sometimes we got ride days.
- 34:59Don't pick them ones, but say after like Townsville, if we could, on the Monday, it's a full test day for everyone.
- 35:05So all the teams are there, the fans could stay, different element, and then you're actually testing at different tracks.
- 35:11A full day of practice on Thursday and no practice on Friday.
- 35:14Or you could do that as well.
- 35:15That'd be all right.
- 35:17Makes sense.
- 35:18What about the race formats?
- 35:19Do you guys like that?
- 35:19Do you like long, short?
- 35:22I like the longer races.
- 35:23Like 250Ks on the weekend was so long for me.
- 35:26Yeah, I feel like 200Ks is where it's at.
- 35:29Yeah, 250Ks is very, very long.
- 35:31Don't need the last 50K.
- 35:33I'm done by that point.
- 35:34I'm tired.
- 35:35Ready to go to the pub.
- 35:37A lot of long ones are good, but you need like deg to make the...
- 35:41Otherwise, they all just pit...
- 35:43I'm the same.
- 35:43But then there's people out there who talk about they want a tyre that they can go flat out 100% of the time all the time.
- 35:49I think the best racing over all the years was Barbagello when it was just like so bad, the surface.
- 35:56So like the worst and like tracks want to give you the best product.
- 35:59That's the hard part because you go to a track and they've got this brand new surface.
- 36:04It's actually.
- 36:04It's too perfect.
- 36:05It's too perfect.
- 36:06Yeah.
- 36:06You don't want that.
- 36:07You want a bit of character.
- 36:08You want like Townsville actually was quite gritty and stuff like that.
- 36:11Darwin is still too smooth like in many ways.
- 36:16But yeah, and then Perth gets resurfaced and stuff like that.
- 36:18Like you actually need character like Pookie and some of those old.
- 36:22They're resurfacing Bathurst as we speak, aren't they?
- 36:25Are they?
- 36:26Yeah.
- 36:26I think so.
- 36:27It's been resurfaced from the last time we were there.
- 36:30All right.
- 36:30So it'll be super fast.
- 36:32Well, it's not bad.
- 36:34It's really bad at the start.
- 36:36It sort of gets better for a few years, then sort of tails off.
- 36:38But remember that year after it was 2013 or 14?
- 36:4214.
- 36:4214, I reckon.
- 36:43It was sketchy-ass.
- 36:44Or was it 13?
- 36:4514.
- 36:4514 there he surfaced.
- 36:47And that's when they had the red flag, the intermission.
- 36:49Turn two.
- 36:50That was like the best race of all time.
- 36:52It was breaking up, wasn't it?
- 36:53Osworth rolled into turn two or something, wasn't it?
- 36:55Yeah.
- 36:56Ingle.
- 36:56In the Mercedes.
- 36:57Yeah, yeah.
- 36:59But that race is sketchy.
- 37:00It was a DJ, our car caught fire, I think.
- 37:02Was that that year?
- 37:03Oh, no, that was a different year.
- 37:04I think for one, caught fire.
- 37:06He still talks about it.
- 37:07What's that, 2008?
- 37:08Yeah, 2008.
- 37:09Yeah, 2008, our car caught fire.
- 37:12I saw Slady's car with the battery on the weekend.
- 37:15Did you see you took the jump battery for a ride around the track?
- 37:18No.
- 37:18Oh, yeah.
- 37:19And that brought back scars from 2008.
- 37:21Surely.
- 37:21Did you get fired for that?
- 37:23They got team points or something, but like.
- 37:24But like there should have been like a, because that's so dangerous, like super, super dangerous shit to do.
- 37:30Yeah.
- 37:31I didn't even know that.
- 37:32It brought back memories of 08 where the battery was in the boot hitting the, like when you go to the shopping and your groceries fall around in the bank.
- 37:39And yeah, the thing went up in flames.
- 37:41The thing went up in flames.
- 37:43I remember Campbell Little, he's like, I go, I'm on fire.
- 37:45He's like, yeah, lap times are okay.
- 37:47I'm like, I'm on fire.
- 37:48I'm going in, mate.
- 37:49And he's so dry.
- 37:50Campbell, he's awesome.
- 37:51He's like, okay, we'll best you pit.
- 37:53Fuck.
- 37:54He's a legend.
- 37:55That's what I was like at Darwin last year.
- 37:57I'm on fire.
- 37:58If you're going to add circuits to our calendar, which ones would you add?
- 38:01So I like going back to Winton.
- 38:03Not because it's our test track, just because it always makes good racing.
- 38:06Even though the surface is good, which is an outlier, I always like going back there.
- 38:10I think we need more street tracks.
- 38:12Well, yeah.
- 38:13Local boy.
- 38:14And I sort of grew up, went to that track as a teenager, watching cars go around and
- 38:19I like it.
- 38:20So I think the Perth Street track's going to be sick.
- 38:22I can't wait for that.
- 38:23I would take that over Winton.
- 38:24But I would not go to Winton in winter.
- 38:28It doesn't make any sense.
- 38:28You know, Winton used to fall on my birthday every year.
- 38:31So you're glad it's gone.
- 38:32I spent about 18 years of my birthday was at Winton.
- 38:35That's me at Townsville.
- 38:35So if I could put it not in May.
- 38:37That'd be awesome.
- 38:38Yeah, that'd be awesome.
- 38:39Where do you want to go for your birthday then?
- 38:42I reckon we should race in... Mykonos?
- 38:44Texas.
- 38:45Yeah, Texas in May.
- 38:46Or a track at the Boundaries or something.
- 38:48But I'd like to race some of those international events.
- 38:52I know they don't help here.
- 38:54But like we used to do all the events here and overseas.
- 38:57So it was like, and it's good for the crew.
- 38:59Like I actually reckon if we could race in Qatar again or, you know, somewhere in Middle East.
- 39:04Because all the team or when we went to Austin, we all branched off and holidayed.
- 39:10The crew, because the cars take so long to get back.
- 39:12I went to the Indy 500 after.
- 39:15Yeah.
- 39:15We did that, didn't we?
- 39:19Yeah.
- 39:20Yeah.
- 39:20We went to Indy 500 as well, actually.
- 39:22Yeah.
- 39:22It was a great race.
- 39:23It was 100th.
- 39:24100th.
- 39:25Yeah, it was.
- 39:26It's huge.
- 39:27Different year, though.
- 39:29I went 13, I think.
- 39:31Yeah.
- 39:31We got to like 40 and went to a steak joint.
- 39:34You would have loved it, actually.
- 39:35I would have, yes.
- 39:36Yeah, so we went there.
- 39:38But I reckon somewhere overseas because the cars, like, gives a crew a holiday.
- 39:42It's an incentive when they come and work for a race team.
- 39:45It's quite cool.
- 39:46I reckon it's really cool to race international.
- 39:47But unfortunately... International racing drivers.
- 39:50But it works against you because sometimes they go there and then...
- 39:53They get jobs there.
- 39:54Like, Smalley branches off and goes to Charlotte.
- 39:58That was always his dream.
- 39:59What do you think in Charlotte?
- 40:00Oh, just there's some nice things down here.
- 40:02I think that was always his dream.
- 40:04Yeah.
- 40:05But, um, but yeah.
- 40:06Like this young fella here, always his dream.
- 40:09Was it always your dream to race NASCAR?
- 40:11Um, always followed it.
- 40:13Really?
- 40:13Always followed it?
- 40:14And cause I obviously grew up on the dirt, um, you know, watching Speedway and whatnot and, and then racing a sprint car.
- 40:21And so I've always kind of followed the oval track stuff.
- 40:23So, so who's coming out of all them?
- 40:25If there's a, cause if the wildcard happens in Adelaide, who would you pick?
- 40:31Like.
- 40:32Because we go over there, obviously.
- 40:34To race here?
- 40:34Yeah.
- 40:35Who would you say should come?
- 40:39I think Kyle Larson would be unreal.
- 40:41He's unreal, apparently.
- 40:42He kind of gets in everything and kills it.
- 40:45Like, in a Sprint guy, he's unreal.
- 40:47And then obviously went and did Indy.
- 40:49Yeah.
- 40:51Chris Buescher, he was my teammate over there.
- 40:54So it was Brad Kozlowski, then it was Chris.
- 40:57And then, yeah, he was really good.
- 40:59Is he like an oval guy or a road course guy?
- 41:03Um, he's mainly...
- 41:05He's an all-rounder.
- 41:06He's mainly ovals, yeah, but he's, like, in the sim, he was actually really good, and he was super fast at Sonoma, so I think he'd be good.
- 41:13I don't know.
- 41:15What about you guys?
- 41:15Ollie's good in the sim, isn't he?
- 41:17Ollie.
- 41:17They should put him straight in.
- 41:18No, he's terrible.
- 41:19Straight in.
- 41:20No.
- 41:20Frosty was good in the sim.
- 41:21I was really bad.
- 41:22He just made me look... Oh, I was... Yeah.
- 41:24I don't know.
- 41:26I think those guys, it's good to race different people around the world, but it's also nice to race them in your gear.
- 41:33Which one's the... Cobb.
- 41:36Yeah, Cobb.
- 41:36Yeah.
- 41:37I think you'd love him or you'd hate him, right?
- 41:39Yeah.
- 41:39Was he good or...
- 41:40He was good.
- 41:41I had a sick battle with him, actually.
- 41:43Him and Truex, yeah.
- 41:44Truex.
- 41:44That's who's smally car.
- 41:46James Small runs his car, yeah?
- 41:48Yeah.
- 41:48Truex, Truex Jr.
- 41:50Yeah, it was cool.
- 41:52I was like blocking Kyle.
- 41:53He hit me.
- 41:53Then I got hit into Truex.
- 41:56And then he lunged me at the last corner.
- 41:58And then we raced side by side to the stage.
- 42:01He got me there.
- 42:02To the stage win.
- 42:03To the stage.
- 42:04But I don't know what we're racing for.
- 42:06I don't understand.
- 42:07Can you explain stages to me?
- 42:09Yeah, so it's like it's a 100-lap race and say first 30 laps, it's stage one, and then they award points for that.
- 42:1630 laps.
- 42:17So it's like 30, 30.
- 42:18That doesn't add up correctly.
- 42:20I'll say it's 20, 20, so then you're 40, then it's 60 laps to go for the race win.
- 42:24So each stage, they award points, and that's also for your playoff points.
- 42:28It's like Tour de France.
- 42:30I guess, yeah.
- 42:30I don't really watch Tour de France.
- 42:32And then the sprinter comes through at the end and wins the round or something.
- 42:36Yeah.
- 42:36And then at the end of each stage, it's caution and then you can pit.
- 42:40Yeah.
- 42:41Yeah.
- 42:41Why do they do that?
- 42:43That's how they do it, David.
- 42:44But why?
- 42:45Well, I think it's actually good because it's a caution, right?
- 42:49So it brings everyone back together.
- 42:50You can pit before the caution.
- 42:52So you know when it's coming.
- 42:53So then it adds a difference.
- 42:54Yeah.
- 42:55So it adds a bit more strategy to the race as well.
- 42:57Man, that's so confusing.
- 43:00I reckon we should bring it in just to make you a little bit more confused.
- 43:03It's not hard to confuse me.
- 43:04I reckon we should bring it.
- 43:06So what do you reckon about Sydney?
- 43:09Obviously coming up, that's our next event.
- 43:10Yeah.
- 43:11It's beautiful.
- 43:12If you're looking for sunny real estate and a good place to bring your family up, Sydney Motorsport Park, five kilometres from Sydney.
- 43:22Beautiful little suburb called Doonside.
- 43:24Out of the 12 rounds we go to, where does Sydney Motorsport sit?
- 43:30As a track, it's like...
- 43:31I can't believe you said that with a straight face, Mark.
- 43:35Out of 12, where does it sit?
- 43:39I think, I reckon Sydney most well- Is it in your 10?
- 43:42Absolutely.
- 43:43I think it's a not- Is it in your top five?
- 43:47For what?
- 43:48Favorite places to go?
- 43:49Yeah, out of the calendar.
- 43:50I'm trying to narrow it down to find out.
- 43:52I'd say top five.
- 43:53Really?
- 43:54So you go Bathurst?
- 43:57No, I think to do a lap, I don't want to discriminate any other tracks.
- 44:01No, you don't have to.
- 44:02It's about being honest.
- 44:04It's about going home.
- 44:06But when you put green tyres on, and your car's hooked up, it's actually one of the most rewarding places.
- 44:14How often does that happen?
- 44:15Yeah.
- 44:16Well, you feel really good on greens until someone else goes half a sec quicker.
- 44:19But like, it is a place that...
- 44:21There's a big disparity there, hey?
- 44:22But it's a big hustle.
- 44:23You've got to hustle.
- 44:23I like that long corners and you get it right, you've rewarded all this sort of stuff.
- 44:28But then when you're in a battle and the tires are bleeding off it, it...
- 44:32quickly drops out of my top five tracks.
- 44:34After two laps.
- 44:35And goes to 12.
- 44:37And goes to 12 or 13, somewhere there.
- 44:39It's next level D. It's hard.
- 44:41It's one of the worst tracks when you're driving and you think you've got stuff under control and then someone comes at you at half a second of lap and you're just like, fuck.
- 44:49And the engineer says, make it hard for them.
- 44:53I'm dying.
- 44:55I'll pull the radio out when they say that.
- 44:57Have you ever pulled the radio out?
- 44:58Nah, just tell Potsy, just stop, mate.
- 45:00Have you pulled the radio out?
- 45:01It's good.
- 45:02Nah.
- 45:03It's a bit hard to reach.
- 45:04Nah, it's not that hard.
- 45:06He's got big arms.
- 45:07Big arms than you.
- 45:08Yeah, locked down.
- 45:09That's not that hard.
- 45:10What do you reckon?
- 45:11Predictions for...
- 45:12So hang on, is it in your top 12?
- 45:15Well, it has to be.
- 45:16Why don't we go to 12 tracks?
- 45:17I know.
- 45:17That's what I'm trying to say.
- 45:18I'm trying to be funny about it.
- 45:19Yes, we only go to 12.
- 45:20It wasn't actually funny, but... Yeah.
- 45:22Well, I'm having a good time.
- 45:24I'm kind of like you.
- 45:24It's actually fun to drive in qualifying, but the whole Tideg thing, it's off its chops, which adds to the racing.
- 45:32If you've got a good car, it's awesome.
- 45:33I've just had a lot of shockers there, so...
- 45:35Same.
- 45:36I'm a little bit burnt by the player.
- 45:40Last year I had a massive crash there.
- 45:41Without bringing up bad races.
- 45:43Remember...
- 45:44We all blew front tyres there one year.
- 45:47We literally blew the front tyres off it.
- 45:49When was this?
- 45:49After three lives.
- 45:50After three lives, yeah.
- 45:51It had that much deg, so he hasn't let it go.
- 45:54See?
- 45:54The whole COVID thing when we went there four weekends in a row.
- 45:58I only did two, by the way.
- 46:00How come?
- 46:01Yeah, what happened there, Dave?
- 46:03I got that AstraZeneca heart now where I have to go see my cardiologist.
- 46:09You got the big bore kit.
- 46:10Yeah, I wouldn't say it's a big bore.
- 46:12Woke me up the other day, actually.
- 46:13It was like 5.30 and I got like an irregular heartbeat and it just went off.
- 46:18And I thought I was having a heart attack, but I wasn't.
- 46:19But yeah, thanks.
- 46:22When I got my COVID shot, I got it.
- 46:24And I went for a run and I PB'd the next run.
- 46:28I don't know why.
- 46:30Completely off topic, but... Yeah, right.
- 46:34Let's not talk about it at shit time.
- 46:35What do we reckon about night time?
- 46:37It's when you sleep.
- 46:37Night time, people go to sleep.
- 46:39No?
- 46:39No, is that what you said?
- 46:40What about racing at night time?
- 46:42So you guys aren't going to win.
- 46:43You're too clever.
- 46:43You guys aren't going to win.
- 46:44Some people do other things.
- 46:45You're not going to win this race because you're too clever.
- 46:48Following your theory.
- 46:49I'm definitely not clever.
- 46:50Following your theory.
- 46:51What do you think about night racing?
- 46:53I think it's awesome.
- 46:54Yeah, it's unreal.
- 46:55It's so good.
- 46:55Adds another element.
- 46:57It's really hard to see.
- 46:58Like when I first drove.
- 47:00What?
- 47:01Depends on how they light it.
- 47:02Remember the first time they did it?
- 47:03It was like, it was really hard to see.
- 47:05Remember the guy over the back?
- 47:06It was real patchy.
- 47:07It was really patchy.
- 47:07Remember the car over the back with his headlights on?
- 47:09Yeah.
- 47:09Yeah, that was distracting as well.
- 47:11That pissed me off so much.
- 47:13But it was really hard to see.
- 47:14And I just felt like, because I haven't done a lot of night driving, I felt like I was going like 10 times quicker.
- 47:19And it took me ages for my brain to like relearn everything and go, okay, it's the same, but you just can't see as well.
- 47:25So, yeah, it sucks.
- 47:27And the fireworks go off, so you know when the winners cross the finish line.
- 47:32If you get to see them, not too bad, because generally you're on that side of the track.
- 47:36Somewhere there.
- 47:37When you're going into like turn four, and you're like, damn it.
- 47:41We just got pumped.
- 47:42Yeah, we got pumped.
- 47:43Cut through, Peter.
- 47:44It's a hard track.
- 47:45Because there's a big disparity.
- 47:47You can win by a lot or lose by a large margin there.
- 47:50Predictions for the weekend?
- 47:51Predictions?
- 47:52Yeah.
- 47:52Who's going to be fast, who's not?
- 47:55Probably the same blokes that are going to be up the front.
- 47:58But I don't know whether it's going to be like a Ford-dominated track or a Camaro-dominated track.
- 48:03So it's really, really hard to figure that one out.
- 48:06I assume...
- 48:08Triple eight's always pretty quick there.
- 48:09Triple eight's going to be quick always.
- 48:10They'll bounce back, you reckon?
- 48:11Oh, of course they do, yeah.
- 48:13Dickford's been quick there in the past, up and down a little.
- 48:16Up and down.
- 48:16Chas is really good at Sydney Motorsport Park.
- 48:18Yeah, usually pretty quick.
- 48:19He's been really fast, yeah.
- 48:21He had no tire life there last year, but he was fast.
- 48:23I can't even remember how we went last year there.
- 48:25We were racing each other on Sunday for about 10th, I think.
- 48:28Were we?
- 48:29Did you beat me?
- 48:32I crashed and then my car got stuck in no man's land.
- 48:35The camera took a while to find me.
- 48:37You were in the second last corner.
- 48:38What do you mean?
- 48:39He was in the second last corner in the gravel.
- 48:40Really?
- 48:41Yeah, something fell off my car.
- 48:42You had a big crash in you.
- 48:43Yeah, man.
- 48:43It was like 47 Gs.
- 48:44It was massive.
- 48:44It was massive.
- 48:46is it turn nine, you know, that fast right where you sort of bleed into it?
- 48:50Yeah.
- 48:50Yeah, something broke when I tipped in at max speed.
- 48:52It was like 200 k's and something broke on the front right and because it's like a rear steer car, sorry, it's a front steer car, like just sent me left hard on the fence.
- 49:01I didn't even know there was a fence there and there was a fence that sort of follows the track and sort of it curves around.
- 49:06So I actually hit it at a really bad angle.
- 49:08Oh, right.
- 49:08And it was a big crash, like destroyed the car.
- 49:11And then I was like stuck in a paddock somewhere.
- 49:13I didn't even know where it was because I'd never been,
- 49:15there before in my life.
- 49:17And, um, yeah, and it took like three or four laps for them to put the safety car out because they didn't know where I went.
- 49:22You can see me tumble down the order.
- 49:25And then like a few laps later, they cut to me in, in the paddock, just like looking at my car broken.
- 49:31It was so funny.
- 49:33Well, not really funny, but like, it's funny now.
- 49:35It's funny now.
- 49:36Yeah.
- 49:37And then the blokes had to work all night to fix it.
- 49:40Hopefully it doesn't happen again, mate.
- 49:41Hopefully we have a good weekend.
- 49:42But we're going to wrap it up.
- 49:44We're done.
- 49:45That's it.
- 49:46We're done.
- 49:46So it's good to chat.
- 49:47What are you doing this afternoon?
- 49:51What are you doing?
- 49:52Invites or no?
- 49:54For what?
- 49:55Dunno.
- 49:55Are you going to play Call of Duty?
- 49:58Very frowned upon.
- 50:00But no, probably go home, do a work day.
- 50:02I used to play.
- 50:03What happened?
