- 0:01By now, most people have heard of the placebo effect, yet they
- 0:06have not gone into the significance of what this
- 0:09implies. Studies have shown that as much
- 0:12as 30% of a group given an inert treatment have similar healing
- 0:17outcomes to those given an actual targeted treatment.
- 0:21The individual given the placebo does not know he has received an
- 0:25inert treatment. The mind of the individual
- 0:28adopted the sense of being aided and undertook to create a will
- 0:33to heal. What this statistic does not do,
- 0:36however, is provide information on what percent of those who
- 0:40actually received the targeted drug or other type of treatment
- 0:45were benefited by a similar will to heal, regardless of whether
- 0:50the drug or treatment was helping them or not.
- 0:54It has become clear that the mind, the mental will, plays an
- 0:58enormous role in the healing of the body.
- 1:02On the flip side of this healing scenario, there is the question
- 1:05of hypochondria, where the mind imagines that the body is
- 1:09suffering from some disease or disease condition and through
- 1:13dwelling on it, the body actually responds and exhibits
- 1:17symptoms of illness. There is also the factor of fear
- 1:21weakening the vital envelope and thus allowing entrance to a
- 1:26communicable disease. The mind accepts the suggestions
- 1:30about the disease, manifests the fear and thus the disease
- 1:35becomes something of a self fulfilling prophecy.
- 1:39We can also observe different results depending on the
- 1:42intention of the individual. Thus, an individual may
- 1:47undertake a fast, start a diet regimen, or simply not have food
- 1:52available and thus be subject to starvation.
- 1:57In all three cases, the individual is not eating.
- 2:00Those who are fasting with intention tend to report an
- 2:04increase in energy and focus. Those who are dieting tend to
- 2:08report a struggle to maintain the diet while working to
- 2:11overcome temptation, with a focus on the process, not the
- 2:16side effect of increased clarity that the fasting individual
- 2:20reports. The person without food suffers
- 2:24from starvation and focuses on the ways to acquire sustenance.
- 2:29Of course, when any discipline such as fasting or dieting is
- 2:34taken to extremes, it can have negative consequences on the
- 2:38body similar to that of starvation, but that is an
- 2:42extreme result in the short term. 3 individuals, none of
- 2:47them eating food, have three different results and mental
- 2:50frameworks, and their bodies tend to respond differently.
- 2:55In his Autobiography of a Yogi, Paramount's Yogananda described
- 3:01meeting with certain individuals who ate very little or nothing
- 3:04at all for various spans of time.
- 3:08These individuals had a spiritual purpose, a strong
- 3:11energetic action, and a radiant glow about them, despite not
- 3:15relying on material substance. We tend to believe the mental
- 3:20conception that the body requires physical sustenance,
- 3:23and thus we expect it to break down when food is withheld.
- 3:28This may, however, be seen as a habit, albeit a very deeply
- 3:32entrenched habit. The question arises whether
- 3:36there are states of consciousness where the body can
- 3:40find support and nourishment through some other form of
- 3:43conversion of energy into matter, possibly bypassing the
- 3:47transitional steps that lead to the creation of food that needs
- 3:51to be eaten in order to then convert it back into the energy
- 3:55and building blocks of substance needed to sustain and operate
- 4:00the body. While this may not be a reality
- 4:04for most, if not all in today's world, can we not envision the
- 4:09possibility of a future formulation of being that is
- 4:12able to construct and maintain a body through direct action of
- 4:16consciousness and force? At the moment solar energy is
- 4:20absorbed by plants and through the process we call
- 4:23photosynthesis, they produce material substance that converts
- 4:28that energy into a solid form and makes it bioavailable for
- 4:33the plants own needs and for animals and human beings to
- 4:36consume and convert into sustenance and energy for their
- 4:41needs. We thus see energy converted
- 4:44into a form of matter and then matter converted back into a
- 4:48form of energy through the action of the plants.
- 4:52If an individual could gain the power of directly tapping into
- 4:55the solar energy without the intermediate steps, a whole new
- 5:00paradigm of existence, bodily health and well-being and growth
- 5:05could be envisioned. Changing this habit or
- 5:08limitation in the mind and developing a new form of
- 5:12relationship to energy through exercise of the will could
- 5:16remove the expectation that lacking food inevitably leads to
- 5:21a breakdown of health, the mother writes.
- 5:24Quote, The Yogi or aspiring Yogi who does asanas to obtain a
- 5:29spiritual result or even simply a control over his body obtains
- 5:35these results because it is with this aim that he does them.
- 5:38Whereas I know some people who do exactly the same things, but
- 5:43for all sorts of reasons unrelated to spiritual
- 5:46development, and who haven't even managed to acquire good
- 5:50health by it, and yet they do exactly the same thing.
- 5:55Sometimes they even do it much better than the Yogi, but it
- 5:59doesn't give them a stable health because they haven't
- 6:02thought about it, haven't done it with this purpose in mind.
- 6:07I have asked them myself. I said, but how can you be ill
- 6:11after doing all that? Oh, but I never thought of it.
- 6:15That's not why I do it. This amounts to saying that it
- 6:19is the Conscious will which acts on matter, not the material
- 6:23fact. End Quote.
