- 0:13[SPEAKER_00]: what's going on build mafia Tuesday happy Tuesday to we got some good news today from camp.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_00]: So this is a new thing that we're doing here at built in Buffalo.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_00]: I am Dave Myers, the owner and founder of built in Buffalo.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_00]: This is first and five.
- 0:28[SPEAKER_00]: We are going to either be alive or we are going to have some pre-recorded content for you with all the bills up to date news and we had a big one today.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_00]: Now, if you remember on Saturday, there was a lot that came out after the bill's preseason game against the Giants where Sean McDermott said that he spoke with James Cook.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: James Cook agreed to do warm up, you know, do all the warmups with the team, but didn't agree to play.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_00]: He said he was not going to play.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: If you watched that press conference with Sean McDermott, he did seem visibly kind of upset or put off by it.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if maybe he's just kind of over answering the questions about James Cook or maybe he's just thinking that he can't give too much information like coach McDermott usually, you know, that's how he is.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_00]: He's kind of a standoffish.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't give you any insights.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't let you in.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, what's going on behind closed doors.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_00]: We flip to Tuesday and a report comes out from all the bills beat, you know, writers and reporters saying that James Cook is going to practice and I'm sure all of us were like, oh, here we go again, like we've we've seen the story before we've heard this song and dance before, but turns out James Cook actually participated in bills practice today.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: So
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: I kind of want to talk about what James Cook means to the team.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: I kind of want to talk about what I think a James Cook contract would look like and I kind of think I kind of want to talk about what
- 2:04[SPEAKER_00]: You know, this means for the team going forward to have James Cook, what he means to the team, what he means to not just the offense, but to Josh Allen and things like that.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_00]: Because we spoke on Bill's allergy on Saturday night, me and a team.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: If you guys aren't watching Bill's allergy on Saturday nights,
- 2:21[SPEAKER_00]: It is our go-to flagship show.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's the show that started out built in Buffalo.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_00]: We talked at the end of the show about James Cook, what a contract would look like.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_00]: What I think would be a fair deal for him.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: What I think would be a fair deal for the bills.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_00]: And I think what would keep him here for the next three years on top of the season that's coming up.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_00]: So essentially he'd be a bill for the next four years.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: So that has to
- 2:51[SPEAKER_00]: put the mindset of a lot of bills fans at ease, seeing him back at practice, going through doing reps, taking handouts from Josh, doing all the pre and post practice activities out there.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_00]: Very stoic didn't seem like he was overly enthusiastic, but he was there participating.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: A couple of things that stand out is the the Kyron Williams contract that the Rams gave to him this past week.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's a three year contract, thirty three million dollars, twenty three million guaranteed.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's kind of where.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: the bills need to kind of focus in on as far as, you know, okay.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_00]: This is where the table has been set.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_00]: This is a guy who had similar production to James Cook the last two years.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_00]: They were both drafted in the same draft class.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: One thing to note about Karen Williams is he was seventy percent of the team's rushing yards and seventy four percent of the team's scrimmage touchdowns.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously not passing, but
- 4:06[SPEAKER_00]: So that's, that's a big chunk, right?
- 4:11[SPEAKER_00]: He accounts for more than what James Cook does.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: James Cook, on the other hand, does have more receiving yards than Carolyn.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: So he is relied upon more in the passing game with the Joe Brady offense and stuff like that.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_00]: So that's something that needs to be taken into account.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: Now a lot of Bill's fans will say,
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: that.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: Well, James Cook's not a three down back.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_00]: James Cook only gets forty to forty five percent of the snaps at running back.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he should not be paid like a three down back.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: And I agree with that.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think that if you look at Derek Henry and you look at the Sake One Barclays.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_00]: those guys at our three down backs those guys that are on the field in the two-minute drill those guys that are on the field at the end to close out a half or close out a game.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: The bills use Ty Johnson for that.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_00]: They did that in the cheap scheme.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_00]: You know, everybody was saying worst James Cook, worst James Cook.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: And I think a lot of fans forgot that the bills were using the recipe in that chief scheme for what they did all season long.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_00]: Ty Johnson was the guy that they wanted on the field in those two-minute drills last three minutes of a game type situations.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_00]: And the bills didn't want to break away from the mold that had gotten them to the AFC championship game.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: But I will say,
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: In the AFC championship game, Bill's verse chiefs, James Cook was arguably the best bill's skill position player.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: He had that ridiculous touchdown where he just refused to go down, extended the ball over the goal line, probably one of the best rushing touchdowns I've seen in the last ten years as far as effort.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: So my thought process throughout this whole thing.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_00]: has been, you know, since it started back five, six months ago when James Cook won an Instagram and put fifteen million on his Instagram live and then Bill's Mafia all, we collectively lost our minds, thinking that you're crazy, you're out in the field, like that's never going to happen.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_00]: My thought process has been the entire time that
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he's going to get fifteen million.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_00]: I don't.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that he deserves to get fifteen million because like I alluded to earlier, Sake on Barakley Derek Henry guys that are rushing for nearly two thousand or two thousand plus yards and are carrying, you know, seventy five percent of the workload, those are the guys that are going to get the fifteen million dollars.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want the bills to ever take away skilled position players from Josh Allen.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: Anything that can help his life be easier, I'm for it, right?
- 6:54[SPEAKER_00]: Now, a lot of people were quick to say he can go, trade him.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_00]: He's money hungry this and that.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: We have to remember he plays a position in the NFL that
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's it's kind of you get a contract or you're a rookie and then you're kind of tossed aside.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_00]: We we draft and we move on, we redraft, we move on and the bills have done that with them.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: Single Terry would Zach Moss, they brought in veterans here and there on one year deals.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to want to get paid and he's coming up a career year.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he had sixteen rushing touchdowns in the regular season.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_00]: So it's something that a lot of fans need to understand like this guy means a ton to this offense.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like this past season.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I think the sixteen touchdowns are probably an outlier.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that that's going to be sustainable.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_00]: But what I will say is the breakaway plays that James Cook is able to have on his resume from two thousand twenty four.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_00]: I think that that is sustainable.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: I think
- 7:56[SPEAKER_00]: There's not another back on this roster that can do what James Cook does once he gets through the line of scrimmage.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_00]: He has that ability to score from anywhere on the field.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: You saw the game against Miami early on where he basically was the offense.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_00]: He saw the game against the forty-nineers where he got outside and the weather seemed to not be an issue.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: The snow on the ground, the icy wet turf conditions didn't seem to be an issue and he broke off that long run.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_00]: And that's something I don't think the bills have other than James Cook on the roster.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: So, again, I think that if you can add as many skill position players or keep as many skill position players with the bills, you do that.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you look at the wide receiver of a woman.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody's been talking about the wide receiver since the end of the season, even back into last season when Josh has thrown touchdowns to Mac Hollins.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: And we're trying to figure out what he and Coleman is and don't even concede at it down year.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, obviously there's Kaleel Shakir and he's always going to be the constant, but
- 8:54[SPEAKER_00]: If you can have a guy that you know what you're going to get because there's countless times where a lot of bills fans, if you go on social media, especially on X, and you see game day threads of what's happening in real time action, a lot of bills fans are talking about where James Cook.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_00]: Why isn't James Cook getting the ball?
- 9:15[SPEAKER_00]: Why aren't we handing it off to James Cook?
- 9:16[SPEAKER_00]: Why isn't he getting involved?
- 9:19[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that's a huge deal.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that looking at this contract through James Cook's eyes is something that we haven't done as a fan base.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_00]: We haven't done enough justice as a fan base.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I don't know where the information's coming from on his site.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to speculate.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to point fingers.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_00]: All I know
- 9:46[SPEAKER_00]: is that either early on in this process, he might have got some bad advice.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_00]: We all know his brother, Dalvin, did this with the Minnesota Vikings where he held out and it became an ugly situation for that organization.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_00]: And his agent, we don't know where he stands.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_00]: We've heard some things here and there, snippets here and there on social media of what his agent has kind of put into James' ear,
- 10:14[SPEAKER_00]: And then we saw James Cook show up at mandatory menu camp, right?
- 10:20[SPEAKER_00]: He was out in front of the media saying, I want to be here.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a leader on this team.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: I want to help this team get to our ultimate goal.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_00]: And that's when it's super bowl.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a veteran entering into year four now.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not a rookie anymore or second year sophomore player.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a guy that the team is looking for for leadership.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_00]: And I have to be a leader.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_00]: And I think
- 10:44[SPEAKER_00]: That went a long way with not just the media, but I think that went a long way in that locker room.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_00]: I think that went a long way in the front office.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_00]: Again, I don't want to speak for them because I'm not in the building.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_00]: I don't have any insider scoop.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_00]: This is just based off of what we've seen and what we've heard.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: And then he showed up to many campus H. John Fisher and he was a participant in the first few days there.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_00]: And then we get to preseason week one against the New York Giants.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, right before then is where it's like, okay, he's now holding in.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_00]: And he's not participating in practice.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_00]: He's in street clothes.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_00]: There was some rumblings will maybe he has some sort of minor injury that the bills aren't disclosing and it looks like it's a holding and then it happened again another day and it's like he's just writing an exercise bike or he's just standing on the sideline and sweats.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_00]: So
- 11:42[SPEAKER_00]: Preseason week one comes, you know, we see James Cook warming up with the team.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_00]: We're like, okay, then James Cook doesn't play.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_00]: Sean McDermott hits the podium and Sean McDermott says, you know, we had conversations.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_00]: I had a good conversation with James and we asked him if he would go through the warm-up process with the offense and he agreed, but James also informed us he was not going to practice or was not going to participate in the game.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: So then we get to Sunday Monday, then we get to today and we again, as I alluded to when I started the show, James Cook is dressed and participating.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_00]: So what changed?
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: That's the question.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if there's things in the background that are happening, maybe the bills in James are close.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_00]: Sean McDermott did say that they've had some more dialogue since the game.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_00]: And there's been some more interactions between both sides, James Cook and the bills.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_00]: So you have to think that there's a deal is coming.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_00]: You have to think that something's in the works.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_00]: You have to think that
- 12:55[SPEAKER_00]: They are closer than what some fans are anticipating, right?
- 13:01[SPEAKER_00]: Like this is the first holding in Brandon Bean's tenure, right?
- 13:05[SPEAKER_00]: We had a little bit of a situation with Jordan Poir a couple years back, but it really didn't amount to much.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't as big of a spotlight.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't as big of a story.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, hard knocks wasn't around everything filming, you know, for weekly television.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_00]: It's interesting that he is back at practice in the new episode of Hard Knocks drops tonight.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know how much is going to be focused on him on this episode.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_00]: When it comes out tonight, but you got to think there's going to be a chunk there of James Cook, which will be interesting to see because maybe we get to see some things that aren't being portrayed into the media or into the spotlight or out there on X or on Facebook or wherever the content creators are at.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_00]: I put there on the graphic on the screen, the Karen Williams deal.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_00]: If you don't know what his deal is, it's three years, thirty three million.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_00]: He got twenty three million guaranteed from the Rams.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that, like I said, that's a starting point.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_00]: I think that I would offer a little bit more.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_00]: And I would offer a little bit more because that to me, if I was Brendan Bean and I'm not, and I don't have any insider scoop here, but if I'm Brendan Bean, I would give him a little bit more than that because whenever we see wider severs, quarterbacks, defensive ends, all the higher paying positions, there's always a starting point, right?
- 14:26[SPEAKER_00]: Whoever the first guy is is basically the template for what these contracts could look like.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: Perfect example, you know, if you look at the quarterback,
- 14:37[SPEAKER_00]: contract market, there's a lot of guys that we're getting paid more money than Josh Allen who are not better quarterback than Josh Allen.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_00]: It was just the template of the position.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_00]: It's an important position.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_00]: This is where it is.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_00]: This is what we're going to do.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_00]: This is how we're going to pay that position for teams that think that they have their franchise guy and most of them do have that guy.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_00]: So that, that Kyrim Williams deal, I feel like it's fair.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, if you average it out, it's eleven million a year.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_00]: And I know it's based off of, you know, there's signing bonuses and there's things pushed back seasons and it's not eleven every single year, but that's the average annual value.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_00]: So I think if, you know, if I'm looking at James Cook,
- 15:23[SPEAKER_00]: young guy, twenty five, you want to have him here for the next three years.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_00]: I would I would do three years, thirty four and a half that gives him five hundred thousand more than Cairn Williams for a guy who's got basically the same amount of production and you give him twenty four million guaranteed.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_00]: That way you can look at it and say, you know what, James, we've given you one more million, we've given you one million dollars more guaranteed than what the Los Angeles Rams paid Cairn Williams, a guy who
- 15:53[SPEAKER_00]: has more snaps, a guy who's had more touchdowns, a guy who's had matches.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know where that lies with or where that lands with James Cook.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know where that lands with his representation and stuff like that.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_00]: And again, I'm not in the building.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_00]: I don't have sources that I, you know, spout out on to social media.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_00]: I just think that
- 16:17[SPEAKER_00]: I hope this deal gets done before week one.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_00]: I hope we don't have to worry about it.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_00]: I hope he doesn't play on an expiring contract for the entire two thousand twenty five season because if he has a really good season, the bills are not going to be able to afford him going forward after the season.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_00]: So one note.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_00]: Then I kind of brought up and I've brought up on social media is that you have to think that Brandon being really wants James Cook.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_00]: Why do I say that?
- 16:46[SPEAKER_00]: Because the bills have not tried to in extend one of the running backs that they've drafted.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, they, you know, they partnered ways with Devon Singletary.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they, you know, they probably could have brought him back on a cheaper deal than what he got, you know, on the free agent market.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_00]: Brendan Bean has shown that he is willing to extend the running back position, which a lot of fans said that he doesn't put enough emphasis on that position.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_00]: So it's going to be interesting to see if this works out.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: I hope it works out.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_00]: If you guys are watching this, whether you're on YouTube, please subscribe, hit that notification bell.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_00]: We got a lot of content coming this season.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_00]: Completely reworked our entire live schedules.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_00]: We reworked all the content that we want to put out to Bill's Mafia.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_00]: We're going for a lot of quality content this year.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_00]: Please smash the like if you're watching on Facebook, share this, if you're watching on X, please share this.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_00]: And like I said, if you're watching this after I go live, drop comments, drop your thoughts, drop your what you'd pay James code.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: What do you think that looks like?
- 17:56[SPEAKER_00]: Again, I'm going to be live every day.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to have pre-recorded videos every day whether it's breaking news topics or just my thoughts on what's going on with the bills heading into the season and once the season rolls upon us.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_00]: will be here doing covering all of the bills news and updates right there.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_00]: So let me know what you guys think.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_00]: My thoughts are James Cook is an important part of what the bills do on offense.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_00]: I know Joe Brady schemes games.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_00]: If you like I said that Dallas Cowboys games sticks out to me from a couple years ago when he just owned
- 18:29[SPEAKER_00]: the Dallas Cowboys.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_00]: The bills told the Cowboys basically, we're going to run with James Cook and you cannot stop what we're doing.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_00]: And they couldn't.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_00]: Now, Kudos to the offensive line, they had a big hand in all of his success.
- 18:42[SPEAKER_00]: But I think that you have to keep intact some of these skill position players because a lot of the wider receiver
- 18:50[SPEAKER_00]: room and the tight end room.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_00]: You're not getting the production that you're getting out of the running back position with James Cook.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_00]: You're just not.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_00]: We're we're piecing together the wider receiver position.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_00]: It seems like every year.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully this is the year.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_00]: They made a big acquisition and got, you know, Joshua Palmer, you know, hopefully key on comes into his own.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully we get some progression from Dalton, Canadian, the tight end room.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 19:14[SPEAKER_00]: It is what it is.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_00]: Let's just hope that this can get done.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_00]: I think we've passed the ugly stage.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_00]: I think we've passed the hold in portion, and I think it's only up from here.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_00]: I do expect the bills to get a deal done.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_00]: I'm hoping sooner than later, hopefully as soon as this week, if not, hopefully before the season starts.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_00]: Again, there's that weird period after the third preseason game, there's a good bit of time before September seventh against the Baltimore Ravens.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_00]: That might be a time.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_00]: And also look, this is not the major topic of discussion here, but look for some restructures to happen.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_00]: I really anticipate the bills restructuring Dianne Dawkins, saving a bunch of money this year.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_00]: I really think that the bills look at him as a cornerstone.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_00]: He's entering your nine, but I do see him being here for the foreseeable future.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like Dawson Knox is another contract that the bills might want to say, hey, we're not really getting
- 20:12[SPEAKER_00]: all of what we actually initially paid for.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_00]: Do some restructuring to try to get, you know, some more money now, whether it be for before season cuts that other teams make that, you know, there's always roster cuts that players that you don't expect to get cut in a position that you might need.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_00]: Plus there's always in season acquisitions where you gotta bring guys up from practice squad or trade deadline if you're looking to
- 20:38[SPEAKER_00]: you know, if you're a buyer at the trade deadline like Brandon Bean seemingly wants to be every year to kind of, you know, put a, put a seal on this, this roster heading into the home stretch.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_00]: So I see some great comments in the comment section.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_00]: Again, if you guys are watching this and you've made it all the way through, I appreciate you.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_00]: Dave Myers, founder, owner of built in Buffalo.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_00]: This is first and five.
