- 1:56By the way, this is day four, gentle
- 1:59progress.
- 2:00So it's series five.
- 2:03It's basically show number three, and it is
- 2:08episode number four.
- 2:11So hello, everyone, and welcome back to Inspirations
- 2:14for Your Life, the daily motivational show, where
- 2:18I focus on growth that lasts, success that's
- 2:22sustainable, and progress that doesn't cost you your
- 2:28peace.
- 2:29I'm your host, John C.
- 2:31Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 2:37podcast host, coach, graduate student, oh yes, guys,
- 2:42and a passionate lifelong learner.
- 2:45It's great to be with you.
- 2:46This show is built from real-world experience,
- 2:50building businesses, leading teams, creating content, and learning
- 2:55that the most powerful growth doesn't come from
- 3:00grinding harder, but from moving smarter.
- 3:04Today's episode is all about the gentle progress,
- 3:08as I said, because real success is built
- 3:11upon and through consistency, care, and alignment, not
- 3:16burnout, guys.
- 3:17Even though a lot of people will tell
- 3:18you you've got to push and grind, it
- 3:20just burns you out.
- 3:21Number one, guys, number one is you don't
- 3:24have to be harsh to improve.
- 3:28Awareness grows faster than criticism.
- 3:32Number two, guys, very important, progress can be
- 3:36gentle.
- 3:38Growth doesn't need force to be effective.
- 3:41Let's think about nature for a second, right?
- 3:43There's so many things that happen in nature,
- 3:44and there isn't force storing it.
- 3:46It just happens naturally.
- 3:49I think that's a pretty cool thing to
- 3:53understand, that nature happens, well, like I said,
- 3:57pretty much, if I will say so, automatically,
- 4:02naturally.
- 4:04That's a very, very big thing to understand.
- 4:10Natural, natural force, and it's done basically effortlessly.
- 4:16That's really important to know.
- 4:18Number three, guys, consistency beats intensity, right?
- 4:24A lot of people work out, I work
- 4:25out.
- 4:26It's not about how hard you work out,
- 4:28it's the consistency.
- 4:30Small steps, repeated daily wins.
- 4:35Number four, guys, growth doesn't require self-punishment.
- 4:40You know, a lot of people do that
- 4:41to themselves.
- 4:42Pain is not a prerequisite, no.
- 4:45So why do people think they've got to
- 4:47be in pain or discomfort to be able
- 4:50to be successful?
- 4:51So I've said to you that success happens
- 4:53where you're uncomfortable.
- 4:55I didn't say where there's pain.
- 4:57I never said that.
- 4:58So we have to basically work at things
- 5:00that are a little bit unfamiliar, and those
- 5:03are the areas where we can find the
- 5:06most success.
- 5:07Number five, guys, soft habits build strong results.
- 5:11They sure do.
- 5:13Calm routines will compound.
- 5:16You know, just like interest compounds, you can
- 5:19compound every single day of your life.
- 5:22And you can go from something you had
- 5:24before to something that's even more impressive.
- 5:27I think that's a really important thing for
- 5:31everyone to understand and to know that that's
- 5:37what it's truly about, guys.
- 5:40That's the whole thing.
- 5:41That's what it is about.
- 5:43And so we've got to be very mindful
- 5:45of that.
- 5:46Number six, healing accelerates progress.
- 5:51Energy returns when, well, wounds heal.
- 5:57Energy returns when wounds heal.
- 6:01We have to heal ourself, whether that's emotionally,
- 6:04physically, spiritually, right?
- 6:09If we don't, then we're constantly trying to
- 6:14refill our cup.
- 6:15This could be us being tired, needing more
- 6:17energy.
- 6:18Sometimes you just need to not just hit
- 6:21the snooze button, but pretty much if you've
- 6:23been pushing and pushing yourself, you need to,
- 6:26well, chill a little bit.
- 6:27I've had to do that myself sometimes.
- 6:28You know, you had a long day the
- 6:30day before, so maybe you don't get up
- 6:31as early at the 5 o'clock.
- 6:33Maybe you get up at 7 or 8.
- 6:35That's important.
- 6:36Be kind to your mind and to your
- 6:37body, guys.
- 6:38Number seven, kindness fuels sustainability.
- 6:44Care keeps you moving forward.
- 6:49Care, compassion.
- 6:54Care and compassion.
- 6:57I think those are very important things to
- 7:00understand.
- 7:02We have to be caring to our body
- 7:05every single time.
- 7:09Because if we don't show care, then we
- 7:13get stuck.
- 7:15And then we get frustrated.
- 7:17And we wonder why our life is going
- 7:19the way it is.
- 7:22Number eight, guys, burnout is not a badge.
- 7:25A lot of people think, oh, you know,
- 7:26if I burn out, I'm going to be
- 7:27this hero.
- 7:29No, you're going to be tired.
- 7:31You could be sick.
- 7:33You'll be out of energy.
- 7:36But it's definitely not a badge.
- 7:37It's not something to be proud of.
- 7:39It's not an honor to burn out, regardless
- 7:43of what skill you're using.
- 7:47Exhaustion is not success.
- 7:49Some people and some bosses might tell you
- 7:52that it's all about that.
- 7:55We have to remember to focus longer.
- 7:58Pressure, number nine, freeing focus endures.
- 8:03Yes, freeing our focus causes us to endure.
- 8:05Now, not always easily, but it does.
- 8:09When we change that perspective to just, I
- 8:13don't know, just a tiny tweak, it's like
- 8:16our mind says, wow, that's pretty amazing.
- 8:20That's pretty encouraging, OK?
- 8:26That's important.
- 8:34I know you're saying to me, hey, John,
- 8:36look, I was told by my boss, I
- 8:40need to keep pushing and pushing and pushing.
- 8:41But really, the truth is you don't keep
- 8:43pushing.
- 8:44You need to just be mindful, and you
- 8:46need to be tweaking, and you need to
- 8:48be adjusting.
- 8:50See, I think that's a very important thing
- 8:54to understand, and something that a lot of
- 8:58people, well, they don't realize, OK?
- 9:07I think that's a very important thing to
- 9:12understand.
- 9:15And if everybody understands that, then they're going
- 9:18to be a little bit better.
- 9:21They're going to be a little more calm
- 9:24in their own environment, as well as in
- 9:27other environments.
- 9:28Number 10, guys, you grow best when you're
- 9:32supported.
- 9:33That's why it's good to support others.
- 9:35They'll support you.
- 9:37It's a circlic effect.
- 9:40Growth thrives in safety.
- 9:42Maybe it's about speaking out.
- 9:46Maybe it's being open to just people's ideas.
- 9:50When people feel safe and supported, they're willing
- 9:54to put their neck out a little more.
- 9:56Number 11, discipline doesn't have to hurt.
- 9:59Nope.
- 10:01Structure can be calm.
- 10:03You can also use positive reinforcement and not
- 10:05negative reinforcement, so you can reward people for
- 10:08the good things they're doing.
- 10:10And then when they're doing the bad things,
- 10:11they don't get a reward on them.
- 10:13I think that's an important one.
- 10:15Number 12, guys, rest is part of progress.
- 10:20I know you might be saying, John, but
- 10:21I don't have time to rest.
- 10:22You don't know what I have to do.
- 10:24You don't understand my life.
- 10:26No, I don't understand your life, but I
- 10:28have a life of my own.
- 10:29And I know sometimes that we all push
- 10:33ourselves sometimes too much.
- 10:39So remember, be kind and be compassionate to
- 10:42ourselves, not because we have to, but because
- 10:45we should want to be that way.
- 10:48Does that make sense?
- 10:49Recovery, ladies and gentlemen, fuels momentum.
- 10:54Number 13, compassion increases output.
- 10:59There's that compassion word again.
- 11:01Compassion is pretty remarkable.
- 11:05Compassion shows others that we're humble, that we're
- 11:11human.
- 11:12Okay.
- 11:14Grace improves performance.
- 11:20Compassion and grace, they're two very special words
- 11:25I want to share with you.
- 11:26Very, very special words.
- 11:29Number 14, guys, slow growth is real growth.
- 11:35People that get to the top too fast
- 11:38find out that it's really, well, it's really
- 11:45something they didn't expect.
- 11:50And then sometimes they just fall down.
- 11:54Sometimes they fall down and then they're like,
- 11:56oh my gosh, what am I supposed to
- 11:58do?
- 11:59Right?
- 12:00You get caught off guard.
- 12:03So do you have a plan B?
- 12:06Huh?
- 12:07If plan A fails, do you have a
- 12:10plan B, a backup plan?
- 12:12If you don't, it's always good to have
- 12:15one.
- 12:17Depth beats speed.
- 12:20Yes.
- 12:20The depth will always beat the speed.
- 12:24Number 15, guys, you don't need pain to
- 12:27evolve.
- 12:27I said this before.
- 12:28So many people, these narcissist people think that
- 12:31life is about pain.
- 12:34I said life is about discomfort because we
- 12:36have to push the envelope a little bit
- 12:38further.
- 12:38We can't just stay comfortable because we're never
- 12:44going to learn anything.
- 12:45This goes for any level, whether it's myself
- 12:48as a graduate student, whether it's you starting
- 12:50school, pre-K, whether it's first grade, whether
- 12:54it's high school, college, our involvement, our perception.
- 13:04We don't need pain, but we can't stay
- 13:06comfortable.
- 13:07We have to get uncomfortable a little bit.
- 13:09Like when we lift weights.
- 13:11I can tell you the first time I
- 13:11lift, I'm like, oh, this isn't comfortable.
- 13:13Now I'm like, oh, this is fun.
- 13:14I like doing this.
- 13:18Awareness, guys, teaches us faster.
- 13:22Awareness helps us to align our perception with
- 13:27a potential outcome, a potential outcome.
- 13:36That sounds pretty interesting, doesn't it?
- 13:39It sure does.
- 13:40Number 16, gentle routines win.
- 13:44Stability creates results, guys.
- 13:47Stability always creates results.
- 13:51Now you might say to me, John, I
- 13:53don't know how.
- 13:57I don't know how to be stable.
- 14:01I don't know how to move to the
- 14:04next step.
- 14:04It's perfectly okay to not know how to
- 14:08move to the next step, but don't let
- 14:11that moving to the next step of you
- 14:14not being perfect to move to it prevent
- 14:17you from going forward, right?
- 14:21That's important.
- 14:22Number 17, care is not weakness.
- 14:27People are stopping to care for you.
- 14:29That is not weakness, guys.
- 14:32That is not a weakness, okay?
- 14:47Maybe you're saying to me, John, people were
- 14:50nice to me, and I feel like I'm
- 14:56going to get stuck.
- 15:00It's a valid concern, guys.
- 15:03It absolutely is a valid concern, okay?
- 15:10It is a valid concern.
- 15:13But it's one that I think we can
- 15:17easily understand.
- 15:22A lot of times we're looking for the
- 15:24end of the tunnel, right?
- 15:25We're looking for the light at the end
- 15:26of the tunnel.
- 15:27But what we're not doing is looking like
- 15:30even a foot or five feet in front
- 15:32of us.
- 15:33We're trying to look so far down the
- 15:35tunnel that's dark.
- 15:36Why don't we look at the little bit
- 15:37we can see right in front of our
- 15:39car, right in front of our feet?
- 15:43Number 17, guys, when I say care is
- 15:45not weakness, it is self-respect for our
- 15:50body and our life.
- 15:54When we start to learn how to treat
- 15:56our body well, you know what happens?
- 15:59Other people start to do the same thing
- 16:01in our lives.
- 16:03Same thing.
- 16:04Number 18, guys, sustainability.
- 16:10Effort beats heroic effort.
- 16:13Sustainability.
- 16:15Longevity matters, guys.
- 16:19It matters.
- 16:22It matters so much because if we can
- 16:25figure out how to get by, if we
- 16:29can figure out how to last a little
- 16:32longer, I've said to you before, success is
- 16:36all about who can hang on just a
- 16:39few seconds longer.
- 16:40Maybe it's hard to hang on to the
- 16:42mountain.
- 16:43But the one that holds on just a
- 16:45little bit longer, they're the ones that are
- 16:47successful.
- 16:48Even a second longer, right?
- 16:51Or a millisecond longer.
- 16:53That makes a difference between success and failure.
- 16:58Number 19, guys, respect.
- 17:01Yes, growth respects limits.
- 17:05Ignoring limits, well, causes breakdowns in communication and
- 17:09many other things.
- 17:10And once we get a breakdown, it's like,
- 17:13oh, where am I supposed to go with
- 17:16this?
- 17:16What am I supposed to do?
- 17:18Help, right?
- 17:23It's like we're thrown off a track.
- 17:25If we were a train and we got
- 17:28thrown off the track.
- 17:29Many of you guys remember what happened with
- 17:30the Indiana Jones issue about a month ago
- 17:33in the Universal Studios where it went off
- 17:35track.
- 17:37Once we get off track, it's not so
- 17:41easy to get back on.
- 17:45It's not so easy to get back on.
- 17:49But if we get back on quickly, it's
- 17:53easier to get on than if we waited
- 17:55a day or two days or three days
- 17:56or even a week.
- 18:00Number 20, guys, healing and success can coexist
- 18:04together.
- 18:05Did you know that?
- 18:06You don't have to wait.
- 18:08They can coexist together.
- 18:12But sometimes people don't believe this because of
- 18:15what they're told from other people.
- 18:19What they're told from other, that's pretty remarkable.
- 18:26Number 21, you don't need to suffer to
- 18:31succeed.
- 18:32You don't need to be in pain.
- 18:34Discomfort's not pain.
- 18:36It just feels different.
- 18:40Alignment replaces the struggle.
- 18:42When we can align with ourselves and what
- 18:45we're doing, things happen.
- 18:47Progress takes place that we'll love.
- 18:51And the patience helps us to go even
- 18:53further.
- 18:54Rushing creates resistance.
- 18:57So many people, they want to rush.
- 18:58Oh, we got to get done.
- 18:59We got to get done.
- 18:59And it's like you want to slow down
- 19:01because first, you're afraid of making a mistake.
- 19:04My one grandfather on my dad's side said,
- 19:07John, we always want to measure twice and
- 19:10cut once.
- 19:12And for a very long time, I really
- 19:14did not know what he meant.
- 19:17What he meant is that if we cut
- 19:19first, even though we measured once, and we
- 19:23made a mistake in the measuring, we can't
- 19:26make a piece of wood longer.
- 19:29We can always make it shorter.
- 19:31But nine times out of 10, we might've
- 19:33cut it too short.
- 19:35So by measuring twice, we double check what
- 19:39we should cut and how much.
- 19:42Number 23, self-trust builds momentum.
- 19:45Confidence grows through follow through.
- 19:48Number 24, gentle systems outperform extremes.
- 19:54Support beats pressure.
- 19:58Support beats pressure every day.
- 20:02Number 25, growth should feel supportive.
- 20:07Punishment blocks progress.
- 20:11If it doesn't feel like we're moving forward,
- 20:16we're probably not.
- 20:18It's just the speed that we move forward
- 20:20is going to be the thing that hangs
- 20:22a lot of people up.
- 20:24Number 26, consistency is kindness in action.
- 20:31Consistency is kindness in action.
- 20:34That's a pretty interesting statement.
- 20:37Kept promises build trust.
- 20:40What happens if you have a friend of
- 20:41yours and he or she doesn't keep the
- 20:43promise?
- 20:44What do you do?
- 20:45You lose respect for him or her.
- 20:47Don't you?
- 20:47And you probably don't trust them again.
- 20:51Maybe you were doing something and you're waiting
- 20:54for them to do something for you.
- 20:55And then it doesn't happen.
- 20:57And everybody was counting on you.
- 21:02So the next time, you don't put your
- 21:05faith in them because they let you down.
- 21:09It might take a while before you can
- 21:12get that faith built up again.
- 21:14Number 27, calm habits last.
- 21:18Chaos never does.
- 21:21Think about it.
- 21:22When you're calm about something, it's like you
- 21:25can power the world, can't you?
- 21:28You could do anything when you're calm.
- 21:31Let me give you an example.
- 21:32There's a song, you made the song, you
- 21:34know, Ave Maria.
- 21:36Well, when you sing that song, it's a
- 21:37very beautiful song.
- 21:38But if you don't pause and remember to
- 21:42take the breaths, you can't hold your breath
- 21:45that long for those long notes.
- 21:50Knowing when to take a breath is one
- 21:56of the biggest secrets of success.
- 21:57And I don't just mean taking a physical
- 21:59breath.
- 22:00I mean, choosing to pull away to stop
- 22:03doing what you're doing and do something else
- 22:08like walk outside, take a physical breath, listen
- 22:13to some music, meditate, et cetera.
- 22:15You get my point, guys, don't you?
- 22:17Number 28, you can grow without grinding.
- 22:22Now, a lot of these big bosses out
- 22:24there will say, well, you know, you gotta
- 22:26grind.
- 22:27You know, if you don't grind, put in
- 22:28the time, you don't, you know, it doesn't
- 22:32rhyme.
- 22:32You don't get success.
- 22:35No, that's the way they're taught.
- 22:37That's the way they're putting in the grind
- 22:39mentality.
- 22:40And the grind mentality means pretty much push
- 22:43till you drop.
- 22:45Not having a care about how it might
- 22:48impact your life, it's a problem.
- 22:53And this is why these managers at these
- 22:55big companies, well, they burn out.
- 22:59Well, they get fired.
- 23:03Well, they start to develop a complex because
- 23:08the expectations they're putting on someone else are
- 23:11so high.
- 23:12They can't even meet one 10th of them.
- 23:15Good thing about a leader is you're asking
- 23:17someone to do something.
- 23:19You need to be able to mirror the
- 23:22attitudes.
- 23:23May not be the same skill, but the
- 23:25attitudes.
- 23:26Ladies and gentlemen, number 28, you can grow.
- 23:29You can grow.
- 23:32Yes, you can.
- 23:34You can grow.
- 23:35And I think a lot of people, when
- 23:37you think about this whole concept of, you
- 23:39know, you can grow, it opens up some
- 23:45really interesting points, right?
- 23:48And these points, growth.
- 23:53Again, we talked about support of that.
- 23:57You can grow without grinding.
- 24:01Progress can have success.
- 24:08Progress can feel humane.
- 24:11It doesn't have to feel like something bad.
- 24:13Number 29, progress doesn't rush.
- 24:17It should gradually unfold.
- 24:21There should never be a rush.
- 24:24There should be a beauty in it.
- 24:27Number 29, progress doesn't rush.
- 24:29As I said, it unfolds.
- 24:31So when I say that to you, think
- 24:33of it like a flower unfurling its beauty.
- 24:39Number 30, sustainable wins feel boring at first.
- 24:44But you know what's interesting about them?
- 24:47They last longer in our lives.
- 24:51A lot of people say, oh, you know,
- 24:52John, it's not moving fast enough.
- 24:56But is it the fast enough you want?
- 24:58Or is it that you want a different
- 25:00result to happen in your life?
- 25:11Maybe you just want a different result in
- 25:12your life.
- 25:12Maybe.
- 25:18Maybe that's what you want.
- 25:28I think most times that people hear this
- 25:35when we say something is boring.
- 25:38We feel like you got to spice it
- 25:40up, right?
- 25:41But in actuality, it's not about spicing it
- 25:43up.
- 25:44It's about giving your communication more intention and
- 25:53meaning.
- 25:55You guys know the words that come out
- 25:57of my mouth.
- 26:00They're intentional.
- 26:02They're not accidental.
- 26:04I want every word that I say, whether
- 26:07you see me or hear me only, I
- 26:09want you to have that impact in your
- 26:12life.
- 26:14I want it to make this amazing, remarkable
- 26:17change for you in your life, okay?
- 26:22That's important.
- 26:27Sustainability wins, but it feels boring at first.
- 26:37People want the ride to go faster.
- 26:39When they haven't even gone on and experienced
- 26:41what it was like, maybe it was good
- 26:43at the speed it was going.
