- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Well, good morning.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Happy Easter to everyone.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: I am Pastor Harry Jarrett.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Very excited to have everyone that is here with us this morning.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: I've created quite a stir this morning, it seems.
- 0:17Everyone seems much more surprised to see me in a jacket and a
- 0:23tie than they are
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: that Jesus actually rose from the grave.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Laughter
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: But this is far less a miracle than that.
- 0:35And so we have gathered this morning to celebrate that he is
- 0:42risen and you can say
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: he is risen indeed.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Somewhere along the way, most of us were asked a question and asked
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: told that it was the most important one we would ever face.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: You probably heard it first as a child,
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: from a very well-meaning adult,
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: leaning down with great seriousness,
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: asking,
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: what do you want to be when you grow up?
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Then it followed you into adolescence,
- 1:28and into college applications,
- 1:30into career counseling offices and life planning seminars.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: It showed up in graduation speeches and self-help books and quiet 3 a.m.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: moments of personal reckoning.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: What is my purpose?
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: What should I do with my life?
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: What should I do?
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: What path should I take?
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: What am I here for?
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Rick Warren built a purpose-driven kingdom on those questions.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: And these are not bad questions.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Don't get me wrong.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: They are, in many ways, genuinely important ones.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: A life examined by these are better than a life lived on autopilot.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: I am sure that you would agree.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: But I want to suggest this morning,
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: on this Easter morning,
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: that they are not the most important kind of questions.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: They are not even close to the most important questions.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: And the reason so many of us are exhausted,
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: disoriented,
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: and quietly bereft,
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: even when we have achieved what we set out to achieve,
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: is that we have been answering the wrong question.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: The most important question in life is not what.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: It is who.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Who?
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: And it took an empty tomb,
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: a weeping woman,
- 3:21and the voice of the risen Christ in a garden to make that
- 3:27clear to humanity.
- 3:31Consider for a moment what what questions actually do to us
- 3:36when we make them
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: central in our lives.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: They make us first the architects of our own meaning.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: When purpose is primarily a matter of what I am going to do with my life,
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: then I am the one who must construct it to sustain it,
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: to defend it.
- 3:57My identity becomes the sum of my choices,
- 4:02my achievements,
- 4:03my productivity.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: And when I cannot produce something,
- 4:09When illness comes or failure arrives or careers are destined
- 4:17to evaporate,
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: I have no ground left to stand on.
- 4:22The what that I built my life around turns out to have been
- 4:26resting on nothing more
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: durable than my own efforts.
- 4:32The what questions also tend to make us relentlessly future
- 4:37oriented in a way that
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: robs us of the present.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: We are always moving towards the next accomplishment,
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: the next milestone,
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: the next version of ourselves.
- 4:52And there is a particular loneliness in that kind of posture
- 4:57because no achievement
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: once reached, turns out to be the one that finally satisfies us.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: The horizon always seems to keep moving.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: The what is never quite enough.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: There is something else, too.
- 5:18The what questions,
- 5:20for all their apparent seriousness,
- 5:23are fundamentally impersonal.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: They are questions about
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: tasks and functions and roles.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: They treat life as a project to be managed.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: And the deepest parts of us know that life is not primarily a project.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: It is a relationship.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: We were not made primarily to accomplish things.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: We were made to belong to someone and for someone to belong to us.
- 6:07This is why the most painful experiences in human life are not
- 6:13usually failures of achievement.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: They are ruptures.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: of relationships,
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: loss of someone that we love,
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: the dissolution of a marriage,
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: the estrangement of a child,
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: the death of a friend or loved ones.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: What wounds us most is not that we have failed to reach our goals.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: It is that we lost someone
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: And what heals us in the end is not more accomplishment.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: It is the restoration of presence.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Someone who knows our name and will not leave us.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: Mary Magdalene understood all of this in a way she could not articulate.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: She had come to the tomb in the early morning dark,
- 7:20moving through grief with a stubborn loyalty of someone who has
- 7:25decided that love
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: does not stop at death.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: She had watched him die.
- 7:34She had seen where they had laid him,
- 7:37and now before the sun had fully risen,
- 7:40she was back.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: And she was not asking what questions at the tomb.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: She was not pondering her purpose or planning her future.
- 7:54She was just remembering who he was and how much he had meant
- 8:01to her and so many others.
- 8:04She had organized her entire existence around a person,
- 8:10and that person was gone.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: And nothing else in the world seemed to matter at all.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: Well, the disciples, the guys, they had come and gone.
- 8:22They had seen the empty tomb,
- 8:24puzzled over the folded linens,
- 8:27and just returned home.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: But Mary, she stayed.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: And because she stayed, she was the first person
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: to hear her name spoken by the risen Christ.
- 8:47Not only the first to discover what had happened,
- 8:52but the first to encounter who he really was.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: He was truly who he had said that he was.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: When Jesus appears to Mary, he asks her, why are you weeping?
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Who are you looking for?
- 9:14Her answer,
- 9:14not recognizing him at first,
- 9:17was,
- 9:18well,
- 9:18I am looking for my dead friend's body.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: And in response, he speaks her name.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: Mary.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: And in that one word,
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Jesus does several things at once that no achievement,
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: no purpose,
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: no what could ever do.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: First, he establishes his own identity.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: The one who speaks her name is not a stranger,
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: not a theological concept,
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: and not an idea about God.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: He is a specific person who knows her specifically,
- 10:10who has walked with her and taught her and seen her at her
- 10:15worst and called her
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: forward nonetheless.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: The resurrection does not produce an abstraction.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: It restores a relationship.
- 10:27The risen Christ is the same Christ who knew her name before
- 10:32the tomb,
- 10:33and he still knows it.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: He also establishes her identity.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: He speaks her name.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: To be called by name is to be told, you are not anonymous.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: You are not a category.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: You are not a category.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: You are not merely one of the mourners at another failed revolution.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: You are Mary.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: You are irreplaceable and known and the one I came looking for.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: The resurrection is personal before it is cosmic.
- 11:22It reaches into specific grief of a specific person and speaks
- 11:29her back into life.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: And he establishes the answer to the deepest who question of them all.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Who was Jesus?
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: Jesus.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Mary oriented her life around this person.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: She had followed him in Galilee,
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: supported his ministry,
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: stood at the cross when others fled,
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: and arrived at the tomb before sunrise.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: Everything that she was, she had given in the direction of this who.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: And the resurrection tells her
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: You were right to do so.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: The one you gave yourself to is the one who will not stay dead.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: The one you oriented your life around is the Lord of life itself.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: This is the answer that Easter gives to the question of human existence.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: Not,
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: here's your purpose,
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: here's your plan,
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: here is the what that will give your life meaning,
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: but here is the who.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: Here is the one who knows your name.
- 13:06Here is the one who went into the darkness ahead of you and
- 13:11came back from the
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: other side to get you.
- 13:15Oriented your life in relationship to this person and you will
- 13:20find that you have
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: found the only thing that is worth living for.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: Christ is risen.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: He knows your name.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: And he is asking you, even now, who are you looking for?
