Transcript
- 0:00Somehow we are already 25% of the way done with our school year.
- 0:04Welcome back to Making Everyday Magic.
- 0:06My name is Shanna and if you are new here we are a homeschooling family of four.
- 0:10We are in our 10th year of homeschooling.
- 0:11It is our first year of high school
- 0:14and our last year of elementary for the 2026 2027 homeschool year.
- 0:18Today we are going to go through my first quarter
- 0:22update.
- 0:28Before we go any further, please scroll down, hit the big red subscribe
- 0:31button, turn on the bell for notifications and give this video a thumbs up.
- 0:34As always, you can find me right on down
- 0:36in the comments or over on Instagram at Making Everyday Magic.
- 0:40Okay, so where's where to start?
- 0:44One I cannot believe that we are this far into the homeschool year already.
- 0:48I have no idea how it happened. We've been.
- 0:51I keep describing it as white knuckling it.
- 0:53Through this season of life, we've been very busy with extra stuff,
- 0:57which has somehow taken the focus off of our school.
- 1:03Like we're doing it, we're getting it done, we're checking the boxes, but
- 1:06somehow it has allowed school to just kind of be white noise on the side.
- 1:11We have been really powering through a lot of things
- 1:14that the kids have had going on, and somehow
- 1:18we are eight weeks in or I guess
- 1:22nine weeks in, actually, from the time I'm
- 1:23filming this, because I didn't even realize
- 1:25that we had finished an entire quarter of our homeschool year
- 1:28because we were just blowing and going, keep it moving, staying on track.
- 1:32And again, I don't know how.
- 1:35So let me start with
- 1:40let me start with the good or start with the struggles.
- 1:43Big debate.
- 1:44Let me start with the expecting.
- 1:46We'll start with the expected, as expected.
- 1:49Math for both ninth grader and fifth grader is going well.
- 1:53I forgot how much of the data
- 1:58level of Matthew C is really just kind of
- 2:02enforcing things that are kind of other besides decimals.
- 2:06It's, you know, a lot of Greek and Latin
- 2:11stems as far as milli, things like that.
- 2:14It's a lot of the measurements and the equivalence and things like that.
- 2:18I just I really had forgotten how much of that there is in the curriculum.
- 2:23And I think I need to share an update on that soon.
- 2:26So let me know if you're interested in that and I'll circle back around.
- 2:29Denison is again as expected.
- 2:31She is doing algebra two.
- 2:34In all likelihood, we anticipate that she will do their advanced algebra
- 2:39and next year and then move into dual credit solutions for math. So,
- 2:46blows my mind to think that we're kind
- 2:47of wrapping that up as expected.
- 2:52Let's see
- 2:54what else is going as expected.
- 2:56Skill sharpness for my fifth grader, Myrtle for everybody.
- 2:59Everybody loves it.
- 2:59Little kind of one page a day.
- 3:01Logic puzzles with the whodunit, which I talked to you guys about this recently.
- 3:05More Doku.
- 3:06It's like a kind of like a Sudoku, but also like a murder clue thing.
- 3:09Book for myself. I'm loving it.
- 3:10I love little, like, puzzle games to keep you kind of on,
- 3:14on your toes and keep you sharp.
- 3:17Let's see what else is as expected.
- 3:21That might be it.
- 3:22To be completely honest with you, that might be it.
- 3:26Extracurriculars are going well, going as expected.
- 3:30Having a great time getting things done.
- 3:34Yeah.
- 3:35I mean, I don't know. We added a couple new things this year.
- 3:37The kids are really embracing where they are and what they are enjoying,
- 3:41and it is going well.
- 3:44Let's talk about
- 3:48you know what?
- 3:49As expected, I'm going to I'm going to file under as expected is Michael
- 3:52Clay Thompson the essay voyage for my fifth grader.
- 3:56Now we have not yet made it into essay writing.
- 3:59We are still going through the grammar book,
- 4:02and then we'll pick up with writing once we finish the grammar book.
- 4:04But we should pop that out in the next couple of weeks,
- 4:08and then we will move into writing with the fifth grader like essay writing.
- 4:13So that will probably be a big jump that I have a big update on,
- 4:17and possibly another Michael Thompson share by Christmas,
- 4:21let's say probably, but it is going as expected.
- 4:25My kids, you know, they they retain that grammar
- 4:28because we've circled back to it so many times.
- 4:30So they remember direct object and direct object, all those things.
- 4:32And then we just go a little deeper, which I think is really nice.
- 4:36As expected, as expected, let me say.
- 4:43Positive surprise.
- 4:45Okay.
- 4:45I'm going to move into like positives, things that are going really well so far.
- 4:51Biology. Biology is going very well.
- 4:54My kids are loving it.
- 4:55They are doing it daily.
- 4:56They are really, really enjoying next books.
- 4:59And I've got to tell you, if you haven't looked into it.
- 5:02Please look into next books.
- 5:03It covers all kinds of different things.
- 5:05We are using it for biology.
- 5:07Something that my kids are enjoying
- 5:11is the Glitter Bombers subscription, which I will link down below.
- 5:15I have links for probably everything that I'm talking about,
- 5:17but just pairing some of those kind of art projects
- 5:20with the other things that they're doing has been a real highlight.
- 5:23They're very into art phase right now, which I think is really great, going
- 5:27very well
- 5:28utilizing our homeschool grade book, and I've got like three videos on that now.
- 5:31So if you want to look at the student planners and how that's going
- 5:33and what all they're doing, feel free to take a look at that.
- 5:37Going very, very, very well.
- 5:38And a shameless self plug here.
- 5:40You guys know that I created vocabulary resources
- 5:45to go along with seizures English two and word within the word two.
- 5:50So I created self grading Google quizzes
- 5:53and practice CSV
- 5:56for import for flashcards into their homeschool grade book and word
- 6:00searches and crosswords and, scrambles and term definition matches.
- 6:05And I do have those available on my website.
- 6:08If you are interested, I will go ahead and link those right up here.
- 6:11Then since then my kids are acing their vocabulary,
- 6:14so I feel like it's just helped
- 6:16make it a little bit more manageable, especially that word within the word.
- 6:20We are doing great on that one, and I am so, so happy
- 6:24to report that it's also very easy.
- 6:26The kids, you know, email them the link to the Google form and they send it back.
- 6:29I printed everything else
- 6:30and I just handed them out at the beginning of the week,
- 6:32and then they can work it right through that.
- 6:34And that is going very, very, very, very well.
- 6:36So I'm really happy to report that
- 6:38because I invested a lot of time and energy into that.
- 6:40So I am really glad, really happy to report that that is paying off big kids.
- 6:44Michael Thompson so she has now completed her first of four
- 6:49point papers, and this one
- 6:51she chose it was I think the prompt was like Shakespeare or a work of poetry.
- 6:55And she did extensive study this summer in one of her programs on Romeo and Juliet.
- 6:59So she chose to focus on Romeo and Juliet, the progression of our papers.
- 7:04And I'll probably hit this hard
- 7:06when I circle back to share about this level of Michael again.
- 7:09Our last paper last year did a great job of proving the point.
- 7:15Didn't do the best job of using the
- 7:19and quotes from books to argue the point.
- 7:22Great job of proving the point.
- 7:24This paper is a great use of quotes and citations.
- 7:27Not as solid as an argument.
- 7:29So if we can get these two things going together, we're going to be great.
- 7:32We're going to be so good.
- 7:33So it's almost like we swung too far the other way.
- 7:36So I'm very excited
- 7:37to see what the next paper covers and the next paper is going to be.
- 7:41And it's actually I don't know what she's choosing yet,
- 7:43but it's going to be a compare and contrast of two things.
- 7:45And so I'm trying to give her
- 7:47I try really hard to give them topics that they're interested in.
- 7:52So I've made a lot of suggestions comparing different types
- 7:56of choreography, comparing, you know, classic theater to modern theater.
- 8:01You know, something like Chicago or Cabaret
- 8:05to back to the future of the musical.
- 8:07I don't know why we're doing it. I don't know, I don't love it.
- 8:09It's very weird. But here we are.
- 8:11Or maybe even like a menken to like Aranda, like something like that.
- 8:15So trying to make sure it's relevant and interesting to her.
- 8:19Compare to a BA. Like maybe
- 8:21that's something where in a place that we could look at right now.
- 8:24But I will I will keep you posted.
- 8:27My goal is to get again
- 8:29the good sites with the good, solid argument and get this together.
- 8:33And I think we'll be in really good shape.
- 8:35And I just try to keep reminding her, like, we're doing this for you.
- 8:38If we can nail down how to do this.
- 8:40Well, now,
- 8:40when it comes to college applications, when it comes to everything you do later,
- 8:44it's going to be so much easier if we can get you where you feel good,
- 8:48solid, confident and have your formula for how to do it now,
- 8:51it'll be much better later.
- 8:53So that is what we are working on.
- 8:55So that's a great, wonderful, pleasant surprise.
- 8:58Struggles.
- 8:59Let's talk about our struggles.
- 9:02Our struggles have been
- 9:07no professor world history, which I recently talked about.
- 9:10It is a great program.
- 9:12It really, really is.
- 9:13It is so much in volume,
- 9:17so much in volume that it feels hard.
- 9:20But I have decided that right now we are enjoying what we're doing right now.
- 9:26Nobody feels like we are struggling or fussing or fighting about it right now.
- 9:30So we're just going to keep going.
- 9:31Okay?
- 9:32That's it.
- 9:32I'm just gonna keep riding the wave.
- 9:36It's working and we're going to that's what we're going to do.
- 9:39It's good and that's what we're going to do.
- 9:41I'm going to quit
- 9:42stressing about how to fit it all in, and just let us see where it takes us.
- 9:46Right now. Nobody's complaining. Nobody is fighting it.
- 9:48They are enjoying it.
- 9:49So this is a win.
- 9:50I have decided that this is a win.
- 9:53And until it's not a win, this is how it's going to stay.
- 9:56Something else that we need to be doing better at is French.
- 10:00We have gotten we got a little busy and we got out of the habit of doing it
- 10:04together, which I really feel like helps keep us accountable, but also makes it
- 10:10tangible is maybe
- 10:11not the best word that makes it real. Okay.
- 10:15And so we need to get back into the habit of doing that together.
- 10:20That my big kid has gotten very distracted and needs to get into the better habit
- 10:24of reading her books.
- 10:25Currently,
- 10:25To Kill a mockingbird is what she has chosen for her book, one of the year,
- 10:29and we need to do a better job of keeping on that.
- 10:32We're doing a pretty good job
- 10:33with reading with our younger one, but a read aloud, I feel like it's easier.
- 10:37And so that is where we are with that.
- 10:40As far as personal schedules, I feel like
- 10:44we just recently dropped off one extra thing.
- 10:47You know, that one more thing that always seems like a great opportunity.
- 10:50It doesn't seem like that much work.
- 10:51It's always the thing that pushes me over the edge that has fallen off.
- 10:55And so we are definitely getting back into the routine, back into our schedule,
- 11:00and back into figuring out what works, our daily efforts and all of those things.
- 11:04We're back on our meal plan, chores are getting done, so we're doing good.
- 11:09We're just kind of getting back into it.
- 11:11So I am happy to report at the end of our first eight weeks,
- 11:14the end of our first quarter. This is where we are.
- 11:16Let me know, is there something you want to know more about?
- 11:18I've probably I've shared.
- 11:20I know for a fact everything I've talked about,
- 11:22I have shared about, but I am going to start circling back
- 11:24through with actual usage, like because everything's great in theory, right?
- 11:27But has it really going?
- 11:29It's a very different conversation.
- 11:31And I am curious now that I'm filming this halfway through October,
- 11:36how is your year started?
- 11:37I know that a couple years ago I just, I everything felt weird and this year
- 11:43kind of
- 11:45doesn't, but does.
- 11:48I feel like right now we're in a stage where
- 11:51we are just feels normal, if that makes sense.
- 11:54Abnormal is the normal, and I think that's
- 11:58wild.
- 11:59I don't know how else to describe that.
- 12:00It just it is what it is.
- 12:02But that's definitely how I feel.
- 12:03So I'm hoping we're supposed to have a cool front this week.
- 12:07So I'm hoping that life just literally cools off a little and goes
- 12:11well and things are happening, and I hope that it's going well for you.
- 12:15So let me know if there's anything else you would like to see.
- 12:17I hope that you found any of this helpful entertainer.
- 12:19Informative. If you did, please scroll down.
- 12:20Hit that big red subscribe button,
- 12:22turn on the bell for notifications and give this video a thumbs up.
- 12:25As always, you can find me right on down in the comments or over an Instagram app.
- 12:28Making everyday magic I am intending to film very soon.
- 12:31Maybe a Q and A, so let me know either down in the comments or you can go.
- 12:35I'll put a post up on Instagram.
- 12:37You can go drop your
- 12:38your questions over there, but let me know if there's anything, literally
- 12:41anything you have a question about and I'll be happy to to answer that.
- 12:44So I think that's it guys.
- 12:46Congratulations.
- 12:47You've made it at least some portion into your school year as of I.
- 12:50And so good job us together.
- 12:52Let's keep making every day magic.
