- Lucas: Hey, welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo! I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna! Episode twelve already, can you believe it? Lucas: I know! Feels like just yesterday we were learning 'Salam' and 'Selamat pagi'. Luna: Oh, I still remember those. 'Selamat pagi' in the morning, 'Selamat petang' in the afternoon... Lucas: Exactly. And today we're going to take things a step further. The most common question you'll hear after a greeting. Luna: Ooh, is it 'How are you?' Lucas: You guessed it. In Malay, the casual way to ask 'How are you?' is 'Apa khabar?' Luna: 'Apa khabar?' Lucas: Nice! A bit slower: 'Apa khabar?' Luna: 'Apa khabar?' Lucas: Yeah, that's it. 'Apa' means 'what', 'khabar' means 'news' or 'report'. So literally 'What's the news?' Luna: That's sweet. Like, 'What's new with you?' Lucas: Exactly. So let's say I meet you on the street. I go: 'Hey, Apa khabar?' Luna: Hmm, then I'd say... 'Khabar baik, terima kasih'? Lucas: Yes! That's the standard reply. 'Khabar baik' means 'good news' or 'fine', and 'terima kasih' is 'thank you'. So 'Fine, thanks.' Luna: 'Khabar baik, terima kasih.' Lucas: Perfect. Let's break it down: 'Khabar baik' — slowly. Luna: 'Khabar baik'. Lucas: And then 'terima kasih'. Luna: 'Terima kasih'. Lucas: Yep. So the whole thing: 'Khabar baik, terima kasih.' Luna: 'Khabar baik, terima kasih.' Lucas: Awesome. Now let's do a quick role-play. I'll be a friend, you be you. Ready? Luna: Let's do it. Lucas: Hey! Apa khabar? Luna: Khabar baik, terima kasih! Lucas: See? You're a natural. Now let's switch — you ask me. Luna: Okay. Hey Lucas, apa khabar? Lucas: Khabar baik, terima kasih! Very good. Now, what if you want to ask someone else? Like, 'And you?' Luna: Oh, like 'Awak?' Lucas: Right. So after they say 'Khabar baik, terima kasih', you could say 'Awak?' — meaning 'And you?' Luna: 'Awak?' Lucas: Exactly. But for today, we'll just stick with the question and the answer. Let's do one more role-play. This time, imagine you're at a market buying fruit. Luna: Okay, I like that. Lucas: I'm the seller. You walk up. 'Selamat pagi! Apa khabar?' Luna: 'Selamat pagi! Khabar baik, terima kasih.' Lucas: There you go. And I'd say 'Sama-sama' — you're welcome. But we learned that in Episode nine. Luna: Yeah! 'Sama-sama'. So much coming together. Lucas: Now, let's do a quick recap quiz. I'll say the English, you say the Malay. Ready? Luna: Bring it. Lucas: How are you? Luna: 'Apa khabar?' Lucas: Fine, thanks. Luna: 'Khabar baik, terima kasih.' Lucas: Perfect. And one more: what about 'And you?' Luna: 'Awak?' Lucas: You got it. So now you can greet someone and ask how they are. It's such a natural way to start a conversation. Luna: I love it. So simple but so useful. Lucas: Before we go, let's say both phrases one more time together. Repeat after me: 'Apa khabar?' Luna: 'Apa khabar?' Lucas: 'Khabar baik, terima kasih.' Luna: 'Khabar baik, terima kasih.' Lucas: Excellent. Keep practicing those. Say them to your friends, even if they don't understand Malay. It's fun. Luna: Thanks, Lucas! And thanks to Fexingo for this episode. Lucas: Yes, thank you for learning with us. Keep practicing, and we'll catch you next time. Selamat tinggal! Luna: Jumpa lagi!
