- 0:29Welcome back listeners to Sandman Stories presents, a
- 0:32folklore podcast where I read you to sleep or until the next
- 0:35story. I'm your host Dustin.
- 0:39Today we are back in the book of Nigerian folklore written down
- 0:42by MI Ogomi Fu. In the first story, the tortoise
- 0:46keeps his word, but the king doesn't it first.
- 0:50In the second story, Tortoise wants to know how Mr. Fly keeps
- 0:53his family so well fed, and in the final story we see how
- 0:57Tortoise tricks the strongest in the land.
- 1:01OK, let's begin. Tortoise and the King.
- 1:08One year the elephant had done a great deal of damage, breaking
- 1:10down the trees and drinking up the water in a time of scarcity
- 1:14and eating the first tender crops from the fields.
- 1:18The King's hunters tried in vain to destroy him, for Elephant
- 1:21knew many charms and always escaped from their traps.
- 1:25At last the king offered the hand of his daughter in marriage
- 1:28to anyone who would rid the country of the pest.
- 1:33Tortoise went to the palace and offered to catch the elephant,
- 1:36and then made his preparations. Outside the town a large pit was
- 1:41dug, and on top of it was laid a thin platform covered with
- 1:44velvet clothes and leopard skins like a throne.
- 1:49Then Tortoise set off into the forest, accompanied by slaves
- 1:52and drummers. Elephant was very much surprised
- 1:55to see his little friend Tortoise riding in such a state,
- 1:58and suspected a trap. But Tortoise said that the old
- 2:01king was dead, and the people all wished the elephant to rule
- 2:04over them, because he was the greatest of all animals.
- 2:09When he heard this, Elephant was flattered and agreed to
- 2:12accompany Tortoise to the town. But when he went up on the
- 2:16platform to be crowned king, the wood gave way beneath him, and
- 2:19he crashed down into the pit and was speedily slain by the King's
- 2:23hunters. All the people rejoiced and
- 2:27praised the cunning of the Tortoise who went to the palace
- 2:30to receive his bride. But the king refused to give his
- 2:34daughter to such an insignificant creature, and
- 2:37Tortoise was determined to have revenge.
- 2:41When the new crops were just ripening, he called together all
- 2:45the field mice and elves, and asked them to eat up and carry
- 2:49away all the corn. They were only too pleased with
- 2:52the idea, and the farmers in distress found their fields
- 2:55quite bare. Now there was a prospect of
- 2:59famine in the land, and the king offered the same reward as
- 3:02before to anyone who would rid the country of the pests.
- 3:07Tortoise once again appeared in the palace and offered his help.
- 3:11The king was eager enough to accept it, but Tortoise
- 3:14cautiously refused to do anything until the Princess had
- 3:17become his bride. The king was thus forced to
- 3:21consent to the marriage, and when it had taken place,
- 3:24Tortoise, true to his word, called together all the mice and
- 3:27elves and showed them a platform loaded with dainty morsels of
- 3:30food. He then addressed them as
- 3:33follows. The people are so distressed at
- 3:37the damages you have done that they have prepared this feast
- 3:40for you, and they promise to do the same twice every year before
- 3:45the harvesting of the 1st and 2nd crop, if you will agree to
- 3:48not touch the corn in the fields.
- 3:51The little creatures all consented, and marched in a
- 3:54great crowd to the platform, which they soon cleared.
- 3:58The king and his people were not very pleased to hear of this
- 4:00arrangement, but they were so afraid of tortoise that they
- 4:03could not complain, and after that the mice and elves never
- 4:07troubled the country again. The End
- 4:27OK and story #2 Tortoise and Mr. Fly Once Tortoise and his family
- 4:34fell on hard times and they had nothing to eat, but they noticed
- 4:37their neighbor Mr. Fly seem to be very prosperous and feasted
- 4:41every night. Tortoise was curious to know how
- 4:45he obtained so much money, and after watching him for some
- 4:48days, he discovered that Mister Fly flew away every morning
- 4:52early with a large empty sack on his back, and returned in the
- 4:56evening with the sack full, and after that his wife would
- 4:59prepare a feast. One morning Tortoise hid in the
- 5:04sack and waited to see what would happen.
- 5:07Soon Mr. Fly came out of his house, lifted up the sack and
- 5:10flew away. He descended at last in the
- 5:14marketplace of a large town, where the drummers were beating
- 5:17the tones of the dance, and maidens were dancing before the
- 5:19crowd of people. Mr. Fly laid his sack on the
- 5:23ground, and Tortoise saw him standing beside one of the
- 5:26drummers. When the people threw money, Mr.
- 5:29Fly picked up the coins and hid them in his sack, and by evening
- 5:33he had collected a great quantity.
- 5:36Then he took up the sack and flew home.
- 5:39Tortoise quickly got out and took most of the money with him,
- 5:42so that poor Mr. Fly was surprised to find his sack
- 5:45almost empty. This happened several times
- 5:48until one day as he put the money in the sack, Mr. Fly
- 5:52caught sight of Tortoise hiding inside it.
- 5:55He was very angry at the trick and going to the drummer, he
- 5:58asked him if he had missed any money.
- 6:00Yes, said the drummer, for some days I have been losing coins.
- 6:05Look inside this sack, replied Mr. Fly, and you will see the
- 6:08thief sitting among the money he has stolen.
- 6:12The drummer peeped inside the sack and saw Tortoise.
- 6:16How should the thief be punished?
- 6:17He cried angrily. Just tie up the sack, said Mr.
- 6:21Fly, and then beat upon it as if it were a drum.
- 6:25So the drummer tied up the sack and beat upon it until Tortoise
- 6:28was black and blue, and This is why his back is covered with
- 6:32bruises. Then Mr. Fly picked up the sack
- 6:36and flew high up in the sky and dropped it.
- 6:39By chance the sack fell down just outside a tortoise's house,
- 6:43and the neighbors came to tell Yanribo, his wife, that someone
- 6:47had left a present outside the door.
- 6:49But when she opened the sack in the presence of a crowd of
- 6:51people, she found only Tortoise inside, more dead than alive.
- 6:57Then Mr. Fly made a song and narrated the whole story, and
- 6:59the drummers also played it. And Tortoise and Narimbo were so
- 7:03ashamed that they left the place and went to live in another
- 7:05country. The and
- 7:24OK And the third story Erin and Erinomi, The Land and Water
- 7:30Elephants. Tortoise was always fond of
- 7:33making mischief between harmless people.
- 7:36One day he walked along the riverbank and he came upon the
- 7:38elephant and said to him, The hippo is boasting that you are
- 7:42only a weakling and that you do not have the strength to pull a
- 7:46log out of the river. That is false, cried the
- 7:50elephant. And to prove his strength, he
- 7:53allowed Tortoise to tie a strong rope to his trunk and attach the
- 7:56other end to a log in the river. Tortoise went down to the water
- 8:01holding the rope and said to Hippo, The elephant is boasting
- 8:06of his strength, and he declares that you are a weakling and
- 8:09could not pull down a tree. That is false, cried the hippo.
- 8:14I can pull down any tree. Tortoise then said that he had
- 8:19attached his rope to a tree, and he would fasten the other end to
- 8:22Hippo's horn. This he did, and the two animals
- 8:26began to pull, one on each end of the rope.
- 8:29Elephant pulled and pulled, and the hippo pulled and pulled, and
- 8:33neither gave way. After some time, hippo rested.
- 8:37An elephant came down to the water to quench his thirst, and
- 8:40then they saw the trick that had been played on them.
- 8:44Snorting with anger, they began to look for the mischievous
- 8:47tortoise. But by this time he was, as you
- 8:49may be sure, very, very far away.
- 8:54The end. I loved having these three
- 9:17stories about the tortoise this time around.
- 9:19The first one was pretty cool and I liked how the tortoise got
- 9:22what was his. The second one gave me a bit of
- 9:24a laugh because I was thinking about a loud folk tale about
- 9:27flies that I hope to cover someday.
- 9:30And the third one was almost exactly brother Rabbit story
- 9:33that I've read in multiple places, including Louisiana folk
- 9:37tales. You can see how the stories have
- 9:40migrated over to America along with the people.
- 9:42There are three more tales of tortoise in this book and then
- 9:45the book will be done and I'll probably replace it with
- 9:48Zanzibar tales. This week's podcast shout out is
- 9:51to Inside the Great Khan's Tent hosted by Saif Beg.
- 9:55This podcast covers folk tales from the Islamic world,
- 9:58including some that I haven't heard of.
- 10:00He also has a lot of knowledge about history and folk tales in
- 10:03the Middle East and the Asian steppe areas.
- 10:06So have a seat in his yurt, drink a cup of Chai and settle
- 10:10in for a story. And if you like his podcast as
- 10:13much as I do, go give him a listen, a rating and a review.
- 10:16And the listener shout out is to the entire nation of Vanuatu.
- 10:21This island nation was first populated about 3000 years ago.
- 10:25Sadly because of kidnapping and population separation much of
- 10:28the pre European history has been destroyed, intentionally or
- 10:31otherwise. Likely the original people came
- 10:34from Taiwan or the Philippines and are closely related to the
- 10:37Melanesians and the people of the Solomon Islands.
- 10:40They met the Portuguese, French and British who all tried to
- 10:43name the islands a variety of names but none of them stuck.
- 10:46The only name that stayed is Port Via and that became the
- 10:49capital and the largest city. There are 113 languages on the
- 10:53island, but the main one spoken is Bis Lama, a relative of Talk
- 10:58Pisin and Solomon Island Pigeon. I would love to visit.
- 11:02And so to my listener in Vanuatu, I say thank you Tomas
- 11:07and goodnight. Thank you very much and
- 11:11goodnight.
