- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is a Thursday.
- 0:16It's the 4th of September, burrowing our way deeper into
- 0:20this glorious month of springtime, this glorious time
- 0:24of new beginnings. And I'm not sure what that looks
- 0:27like in your life, but Gee, I hope it is a good week.
- 0:30Or if you are in the northern hemisphere and this is the
- 0:33beginning of the cooler time as the leaves change their colours
- 0:37are. Our world is a beautiful place.
- 0:39Don't know about you, but I often look up in the sky and
- 0:42think how can it possibly be so incredibly glorious?
- 0:47But the the blue sky and the clouds and the light playing off
- 0:49it all, we have a gorgeous world in which we live.
- 0:53And we are continuing to read this gorgeous story.
- 0:57And it can be a little tempting as this is going to be Paul and
- 1:01Barnabas Tastic today's reading as Paul and Barnabas are active
- 1:05in Iconium and then go to Lystra and Derby and then return to
- 1:09Antioch of Syria. And it's Paul and Barnabas this
- 1:11and Paul and Barnabas that. But we know that it's not Paul
- 1:16and Barnabas who are the main characters of this story in
- 1:19Acts. It's Jesus.
- 1:20It is Jesus who is building his church through his spirit.
- 1:24And the players, Paul and Barnabas, are simply there doing
- 1:28the work that they are led by the main character in this book,
- 1:32who is your and my Saviour, the Son of God.
- 1:36That's right, this is the book of Jesus and his acts through
- 1:39the apostles. So let us hear what Jesus is up
- 1:42to as we continue reading Acts chapter 14.
- 1:56The same thing happened in Iconium.
- 1:59Paul and Barnabas went to the Jewish synagogue and preached
- 2:02with such power that a great number of both Jews and Greeks
- 2:06became believers. Some of the Jews, however,
- 2:09spurned God's message and poisoned the minds of the
- 2:12Gentiles against Paul and Barnabas.
- 2:15But the apostles stayed there a long time, preaching boldly
- 2:18about the grace of the Lord. And the Lord proved their
- 2:22message was true by giving them power to do miraculous signs and
- 2:26wonders. But the people of the town were
- 2:28divided in their opinion about them.
- 2:30Some sided with the Jews and some with the apostles.
- 2:35Then a mob of Gentiles and Jews, along with their leaders,
- 2:39decided to attack and stone them.
- 2:41When the apostles learnt of it, they fled to the region of
- 2:45Lycaonia, to the towns of Lystra and Derby and the surrounding
- 2:49area, and there they preached the good news.
- 2:54While they were at Lystra, Paul and Barnabas came upon a man
- 2:57with crippled feet. He had been that way from birth,
- 3:01so he had never walked. He was sitting and listening as
- 3:04Paul preached. Looking straight at him, Paul
- 3:08realised he had faith to be healed.
- 3:10So Paul called to him in a loud voice, Stand up and the man
- 3:15jumped to his feet and started walking.
- 3:17When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in their
- 3:21local dialect. These men are gods in human
- 3:24form. They decided that Barnabas was
- 3:26the Greek God Zeus and that Paul was Hermes, since he was the
- 3:30chief speaker. Now the temple of Zeus was
- 3:34located just outside the town. So the priest of the temple and
- 3:37the crowd bought bulls and wreaths of flowers to the town
- 3:40gates, and they prepared to offer sacrifices to the
- 3:44apostles. But when the apostles, Barnabas
- 3:47and Paul heard what was happening, they tore their
- 3:49clothing in dismay and ran out among the people shouting,
- 3:53Friends, why are you doing this? We are merely human beings just
- 3:58like you. We have come to bring you the
- 4:00good news that you should turn from these worthless things and
- 4:04turn to the living God who made heaven and earth, the sea and
- 4:09everything in them. In the past He permitted all the
- 4:13nations to go their own ways, but He never left them without
- 4:16evidence of Himself and His goodness.
- 4:19For instance, He sends you rain and good crops and gives you
- 4:23food and joyful hearts. But even with these words, Paul
- 4:28and Barnabas could scarcely restrain the people from
- 4:30sacrificing to them. Then some Jews arrived from
- 4:34Antioch and Iconium and won the crowds to their side.
- 4:38They stoned Paul and dragged him out of town, thinking he was
- 4:42dead. But as the believers gathered
- 4:44around him, he got up and went back into the town.
- 4:49The next day he left with Barnabas for Derby.
- 4:54After preaching the good news in Derby and making many disciples,
- 4:58Paul and Barnabas returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch of
- 5:02Presidia, where they strengthened the believers.
- 5:06They encouraged them to continue in the faith, reminding them
- 5:10that we must suffer many hardships to enter the Kingdom
- 5:13of God. Paul and Barnabas also appointed
- 5:17elders in every church. With prayer and fasting, they
- 5:21turned the elders over to the care of the Lord in whom they
- 5:24had put their trust. Then they travelled back through
- 5:28Presidia to Pamphylia. They preached the word in Perga,
- 5:32then went down to Italia. Finally, they returned by ship
- 5:37to Antioch of Syria, where their journey had begun.
- 5:41The believers there had entrusted them to the grace of
- 5:44God to do the work they had now completed.
- 5:47Upon arriving in Antioch, they called the church together and
- 5:51reported everything God had done through them and how He had
- 5:55opened the door of faith to Gentiles too, and they stayed
- 5:59there with the believers for a long time.
- 6:12Our Lord Jesus, bless us in our day today as we move around and
- 6:18do what it is that we need to do.
- 6:19Lord, I pray that You would provide for us those things that
- 6:23we need, that You would constantly remind us that we are
- 6:28Yours and that as we move around this world, we do not belong to
- 6:32the things of this world, but that we belong to you.
- 6:35We are a member of your family and your Kingdom.
- 6:42Lord, I pray that we can we were able to speak words of peace and
- 6:50that we can bring your love and your grace and your forgiveness
- 6:54where it's most needed. Lord, give us the wisdom of your
- 6:58Spirit that we would know how to behave and what to say in those
- 7:04tricky areas that we're going to face today, and that ultimately,
- 7:09in all we do, we can be way finders finding the way back to
- 7:15You and pointing others toward you and your love for them.
- 7:21Use us. Lord Jesus, we pray all of this
- 7:24in your loving and saving name, Amen.
