- 0:00SPEAKER_00: we are exploring this idea from chapter 11 of Let Our Joys Be Known.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: It's a book that some of you have been going through,
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: and I've been basing these sermons on,
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: that we are called to go and tell.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: So here's the big idea for this morning.
- 0:19The Spirit invites ordinary people like you,
- 0:23like me,
- 0:24to share good news with
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: where they already are.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: So,
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: as we pray and as we notice and as we tell and as we invite,
- 0:37the belief is that God opens the hearts and the homes of people
- 0:43in our sphere of
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: influence.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: So, mission is not a program that we follow, it is a path that we walk.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Just ordinary people
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Telling a better story about life with the divine.
- 1:03There are these days,
- 1:04I think,
- 1:05fewer apostles and clearly fewer pastors who
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: But there are more teachers,
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: more mechanics,
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: more students,
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: more retirees,
- 1:16you that are being called to go and tell the good story about
- 1:21Jesus Christ where
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: you happen to find yourself in any given day.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Jesus' last words set our direction as a church.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Receive power from the Holy Spirit.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: and then be my witnesses.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Not later, not someday, not just back then, but now, today.
- 1:54The disciples were asking at that time when they heard Jesus
- 1:58say these things in
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Acts about timetables and maps.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: When is it going to finally end was their question.
- 2:11And as Jesus often did,
- 2:13He reframed everything and He answered with a promise and a
- 2:18verb.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: It starts now.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Power is coming, and then you go and tell about me.
- 2:30In Antioch,
- 2:32one of the earliest churches,
- 2:34they listened and they fasted for direction.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: And we are trying to do those same kinds of things today.
- 2:42And as they did that,
- 2:44they heard the Spirit say,
- 2:46set apart Barnabas and Saul.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: So,
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: we learn that sending always begins with worship,
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: which is why we gather each Sunday at the beginning of the week,
- 3:04so we can pray and discern and hear the Spirit of God telling
- 3:10us where we might go
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: in the days ahead this coming week.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: And they laid hands on each other,
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: and they blessed each other,
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: and then they released them out into the world,
- 3:26and they trusted that the Spirit was more than their own
- 3:31personal comfort as they
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: went.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Love lets us go with the gospel and grow.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: N.T.
- 3:42Wright,
- 3:42as you know,
- 3:42one of my favorite theologians,
- 3:44says that the gospel is news,
- 3:48not advice.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: The gospel is news, not advice.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: It announces what God has done and is doing through Jesus Christ.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: And our task is to carry that good news into real life.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: A person, not a program and not a plan.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Now, Paul, he had a plan.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: He had plans.
- 4:17But what we see in the Scripture is that God had lots of
- 4:22detours for that young fellow.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: He had a night vision,
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: a new direction,
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: a new shore,
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: a welcome into Macedonia,
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: a call to go there,
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: a man.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: in Macedonia.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: But there, beside a river, he met a woman, a bunch of women in prayer.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Not a man, a crowd of women, and not a synagogue.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Ladies, a sewing circle.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: A lot of ministry happens in a sewing circle, if you don't know.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: A lot of mission happens in sewing circles as well,
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: if you don't know that,
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: especially in the Brethren Church.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: They were seekers waiting by the water.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: And for God, that was enough.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Lydia, who was one of those ladies there, listened with an open heart.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: And then the Lord opened it up wider.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: And her home became the first church in Europe.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Lydia, the first church in Europe in her home.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Now, you know I've been a missionary, and I've done all that.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: I did that with the Mennonite church.
- 5:44The Brethren Church has had a little bit different experience
- 5:48with missions.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Early on, the Brethren family was very, very excited about missions.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: They were very energetic about going and sharing the gospel, but
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: they also wrestled with it as they grew.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: They became cautious, even suspicious.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Some early on said, you know, the Great Commission is just in the past.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: It was directed by the apostles, and it is not for us modern Christians.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: So,
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: missions stalled for many,
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: many years,
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: but the Spirit kept nudging,
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: as the Spirit always does,
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: and in 1852,
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: a query reached annual conference.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: It said, let's devise a plan for missions.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: They urged again and again, and finally, in 1880, five
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: men were appointed to lead.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Sorry, ladies, no sewing circle at that time.
- 6:59And the domestic and the foreign work of the Church of the
- 7:02Brethren began.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: praying, planning, sending together.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: And soon, workers went far and wide.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: They went to Denmark and Sweden and Palestine,
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: India,
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: China,
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: Nigeria,
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Turkey,
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: France,
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Cuba,
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Puerto Rico,
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Ecuador,
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Sudan,
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: and Korea.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Many of those people served in practical ways.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 7:33because the brethren tend to believe that service has often
- 7:37been seen as a witness
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: to practical faith.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Hands become a living sermon, work instead of words.
- 7:50Now,
- 7:51Nigeria has been an incredible place for God's work in the
- 7:57church of the brethren.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: It has been a bright chapter for us.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: By 1995, 120,000
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Church of the Brethren members in Nigeria.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: EYN, Ecclesiar, Yan Uwa Anajiria.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: Growing, alive, sharing Jesus Christ in a brethren kind of way.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: So this off and on,
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: here and there,
- 8:38word and work is our legacy and it is our lane as the church of
- 8:44the brethren.
- 8:46We've questioned and then we've learned and then we obeyed and
- 8:51we went and we told
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: and now it's our turn.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: It's your turn to go and tell.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: Because mission isn't only far, it is near.
- 9:07It's across the ocean,
- 9:09but it's also across the street,
- 9:11across the field,
- 9:13right?
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Across the fence.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: Both count.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: All of those things are witness.
- 9:19All of us can go and tell no matter where we find ourselves in
- 9:25any given day.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: So let's honor our story with God,
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: with Jesus Christ,
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: with the Holy Spirit by stepping out together and telling that story.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Let's pray.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Let's notice.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Let's serve.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Let's tell.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: Let's invite, which many of you are doing, and thank you for that.
- 9:50The same Spirit who moved way back then and over all of these
- 9:55years in the Church
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: of the Brethren is moving now.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: It's moving today.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: It's moving, I believe, in this place.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: Richard Rohrer, again one of my favorites, calls this living in the flow.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: We move with the Spirit's current throughout our days.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: We let God's love set our next step as we journey along the way.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: The book of Romans says that the gospel is God's power to save,
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: not our eloquence,
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: our story,
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: not our brand,
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: or our denomination,
- 10:40God's power and presence in our lives and the promise that God
- 10:47is already present
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: in others' lives as well.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: So, we can all go and tell our story.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: telling our story about Jesus.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: We can tell it with gentleness.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: We can tell it with courage.
- 11:03And as we do,
- 11:04we trust that the message is more than our methods by which we
- 11:09do it.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: So, what does go and tell look like here for us in our daily lives?
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Well, start with one honest grace story.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: Name where Jesus met you today, yesterday, last year, long ago.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: It sounds like I was anxious and Christ gave me peace.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: I was bitter and
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: And Christ taught me how to forgive.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: I was alone.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: And this church, this church became my family.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: Come on and see that it can be the same for you.
- 11:56Now,
- 11:56the Samaritan woman understood very,
- 11:59very fast when she met Jesus at the well.
- 12:03She left her water jar and she ran to tell all of her family
- 12:09and friends in the
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: village,
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: come on,
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: come see a man who told me everything about my life and still loved me.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: He'll love you too.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Now, she did not pass a theology exam first.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: She shared what she knew at that point, and it was enough.
- 12:36Her town came to Jesus because she told a story,
- 12:42and it can be the same for all of us as well.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Barbara Brown Taylor says, the gospel begins with a voice.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: even a shaky one, God can use even a whisper.
- 13:01Now,
- 13:01some of us might feel burned out or disqualified for one reason
- 13:07or another.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: You don't need to.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: I've been there.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Others have been there.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Others are there now.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: But the Spirit's love is all about starting again with us and others.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: So today, ask, who is my Macedonian this week?
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: Is it a neighbor, co-worker, classmate, child that I meet along the way?
- 13:37Someone is waiting by a quiet river for you to pass by tomorrow
- 13:45or the next day.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Ask yourself,
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: where's my Antioch,
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: a circle that prays and listens before it acts,
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: a team that sends instead of clings to.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: And ask yourself, what is my Lydia step?
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: Can you open your home, your schedule, your table?
- 14:12Remember,
- 14:13hospitality is mission with plates and lasagna if you happen to
- 14:20be in Italy.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: When ears are closed, serve.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: When service opens them, speak.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: And when speaking begins, point to Jesus.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: So, Pleasant Valley, can we go and tell?
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: Can we bless and release, invite and include?
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: Can we be unashamed of this good news that is our story?
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: I believe we can.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: I believe you can.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 15:19Amen.
