- 0:11Welcome to It's My Money.
- 0:12It's My Money is brought to you by Brenthurst Wealth, South Africa's
- 0:15multi-award winning boutique wealth manager.
- 0:17This week I'm speaking to Suzanne Hauman from Brenthurst Wealth because investing
- 0:21offshore, Suzanne, has suddenly got easier.
- 0:24And this was something that crept up on us.
- 0:25It was a surprise from the Reserve Bank.
- 0:28I think.
- 0:28I remember waking up one morning, speaking to someone and they said, I can't speak to
- 0:32you because so many people are phoning me about this new
- 0:35legislation that's come through.
- 0:37Please tell me a bit about it.
- 0:40Morning, Lindsay, and morning, listeners.
- 0:42Thank you.
- 0:43Yes, that was definitely a surprise to us all when in the 2026 budget speech,
- 0:49they actually announced that our SDA, which is your single discretionary
- 0:54allowance, has been increased from one million
- 0:56rand per annum.
- 0:58to two million rand per annum.
- 1:00So basically what that means is that any South African taxpayer over the age of 18
- 1:06can now move two million rand per year offshore and that can basically be used
- 1:12for anything.
- 1:13It's for investments, for travels, gifts to family and stuff like that, payments
- 1:19abroad.
- 1:19Yeah, so that made a huge difference in the lives of the South African taxpayer.
- 1:25Yeah, and it's been doubled.
- 1:26And there are two angles to this from my perspective.
- 1:28The first is the macro angle.
- 1:29It means that South Africa's finances are, compared to previous years, compared to
- 1:34previous budgets, are in a relatively
- 1:36good state that they can allow this to happen.
- 1:39And secondly, it means an awful lot.
- 1:41I mean, some people say, oh, it's just a million.
- 1:44What can you do with a million overseas these days?
- 1:46I can tell you, you can do a lot with a million overseas these days.
- 1:50So it's a very important...
- 1:52ruling that they've introduced.
- 1:54And I think a lot of people must be quite excited about it.
- 1:57No, definitely.
- 1:58We've definitely seen an increase in our investors taking up this opportunity to
- 2:05invest additional 1 million Rand per annum.
- 2:08Because previously you had to apply for an approval for international transfer in the
- 2:13olden days, if I can say it like
- 2:15that, known as the tax clearance.
- 2:16Basically, now they can move 2 million Rand and effectively four million rand per
- 2:22annum
- 2:23between a husband and a spouse so for your average south african investor that is
- 2:29more than enough
- 2:30leeway to invest offshore without having to apply to source for this approval to
- 2:36transfer funds out out of the
- 2:37country tell me how it works do you literally contact your bank and say i've
- 2:42got a million in my current
- 2:44account or in my short-term money market account whatever it is bung it over to my
- 2:49overseas bank, please.
- 2:50Is it as simple as that?
- 2:52Yes, it is very simple to do it.
- 2:54You've got a couple of options that you can do.
- 2:56You can either go through your bank.
- 2:58So a lot of the banks now have this facility, even on your banking app on your
- 3:03phone, to say to convert
- 3:05funds into an offshore account.
- 3:07We call it a FCA, a foreign currency account.
- 3:11So some banks or most of the banks have the option, then you have to have an
- 3:16offshore bank account.
- 3:18Or you can buy dollars and invest it in a dollar investment like an Easy Equities or
- 3:23a direct unit trust or a share
- 3:25portfolio.
- 3:26So the first step would be to open a bank account if you only want to put it in a
- 3:31bank account.
- 3:32If you want to externalize the funds completely for a unit trust investment or
- 3:36share portfolio, then you can contact your
- 3:39financial advisor.
- 3:40Most of the financial advisor companies have someone that deals with this foreign
- 3:44exchange for the clients.
- 3:47Brentis does it in-house for our clients, which gives you this one step and one
- 3:53place that you can basically do everything.
- 3:55We offer you share portfolios, unit trusts, development investments, foreign
- 4:00currency bank accounts.
- 4:01So, yeah, we can do it all for you.
- 4:03So very easy to do.
- 4:04And basically, if it's below your SDA, the whole transaction can be done within a
- 4:10week.
- 4:10Very good.
- 4:11Very progressive and very encouraging all at the same time.
- 4:14And of course, this gives you more choices now.
- 4:17With extra money, you have extra choices.
- 4:19And there are so many things you can do.
- 4:20And you make a point in the article you kindly sent me that you don't have to have
- 4:24money offshore in order to invest offshore because of the
- 4:27funds available on the local market, for example.
- 4:30That's a very important point.
- 4:31In case somebody doesn't have a million lying around, you can invest offshore
- 4:35through different means.
- 4:37That is 100 percent.
- 4:38And that's something that not a lot of South Africans actually are aware of, that
- 4:43we've got what we call feeder
- 4:45funds, which is basically localized funds that will feed directly into an offshore
- 4:51unit trust fund.
- 4:52So your funds, your money will never leave South Africa in inverted commas in the
- 4:59fact that you will
- 4:59always have rent, but your fund that you're investing will feed into an
- 5:04offshore fund.
- 5:05So whenever the rent weakens, that fund...
- 5:08will increase in value and where the rent strengthens against the dollar, that fund
- 5:13value will go lower.
- 5:16effectively, you will get offshore investments, offshore exposure within your
- 5:22local investments
- 5:23without having to have a million rand.
- 5:26You can do it with as little as a 500 rand a month.
- 5:29There's two considerations that have just popped into my head.
- 5:32And the first one is tax.
- 5:34Now, if you send a million offshore, and I don't know how much that is, let's say
- 5:38it's 60, $65,000, something like that, it
- 5:41hits your overseas bank account, is then that subject to tax or is it subject to
- 5:47scrutiny at least,
- 5:48Suzanne?
- 5:50Yes.
- 5:50So as a South African taxpayer, we are taxed on our worldwide income.
- 5:56So any interest, dividends and capital gains tax that you or capital gains that
- 6:01you earn offshore has
- 6:03to be declared in South Africa or wherever you are tax domiciled.
- 6:09Always stay above board with your taxman.
- 6:11That's my motto is do not try and undermine the tax man.
- 6:15because it will come and bite you.
- 6:17So yes, you have to make sure that even your estate planning mentions any
- 6:24offshore investment.
- 6:25So tax is definitely something that you have to consider, even if you've got a
- 6:29direct offshore investment.
- 6:31And the other thing that I wanted to mention was the level of the South African
- 6:34rand on the foreign exchange markets.
- 6:36Now, it had a good 2025.
- 6:38It's had a bit of a wobble for obvious reasons.
- 6:40In 2026, some people are saying that it's all over and the round will be on its way
- 6:46to 19-20 against the
- 6:47US dollar, like it was a few years ago.
- 6:51Not even, actually.
- 6:52But I think the message here is not to try and trade the rand.
- 6:56If you've got the money to diversify your portfolio via some foreign exchange, via
- 7:03that million rand extra allowance, then I think do it.
- 7:06Don't become a currency trader is my message.
- 7:08What's yours?
- 7:09100% my advice to my clients always Once you made the decision to
- 7:16invest in an offshore market or an offshore fund, forget about the rent,
- 7:21forget about the dollar.
- 7:22You are looking for that long-term growth opportunity in the global market because
- 7:29our
- 7:30South African market is so much smaller than the global market.
- 7:33Forget about the currency exchange.
- 7:35Yes, it will go up.
- 7:36Yes, it will go down.
- 7:38The difference in losing...
- 7:40in inverted commas, $1,000 versus 1,000 rands is so much bigger.
- 7:45But the long-term opportunities is much, much better.
- 7:50Forget about the rand.
- 7:51It's practically impossible to predict what the currency is going to do over the
- 7:55next 1, 4, 5, 10, 20
- 7:58years.
- 7:59Great advice as always, Suzanne.
- 8:01Thanks so much for your time.
