LITTLE GODS, An Immigrant Novel
Set in China, Meng Jin’s debut novel, LITTLE GODS, is not the traditional immigrant novel. It largely looks back in time at the life of a brilliant Chinese physicist, Su Lan, before she immigrated to the United States. Her life is explored through the eyes of narrators that knew her as a young woman, and her daughter. The novel reveals her battles a woman scientist in a man’s world, and her attempts to leave behind her rural upbringing. When Su Lan dies unexpectedly dies, her 17 year old daughter Liya goes to China to learn more about her life before she immigrated.
