Latest / Little House of Mahj / Little House of Mahj - Episode 3 - When to stop The Charleston, and ways to handle the discard pile
Transcript
- 0:00On today's episode we are asking the age-old question to stop or
- 0:04not to stop the Charleston after the first round.
- 0:07I'm going to be honest, emotions are high today as we discussed
- 0:11during our Point Counterpoint segment.
- 0:13Also, we talk about the different ways people handle the
- 0:16discard pile. Are you team order or team
- 0:18chaos? Buckle up and enjoy the episode.
- 0:24We're four sisters. We're the new game.
- 0:28We all love it. We hope.
- 0:30You feel the. Same way.
- 0:31So come on in and listen to our podcast because everyone is
- 0:35welcome in the little House of Maj.
- 0:38Hello everybody, Welcome to the Little House of Maj. podcast.
- 0:41I'm Lisa. I'm Teresa.
- 0:43I'm Amy. I'm Tina and.
- 0:46We are here from the Little House, so we are going to
- 0:49introduce a new segment called Point Counterpoint.
- 0:52This is going to be lively, ladies.
- 0:54We've got some topics, some would say controversial.
- 0:57We'll see how it goes. We're going to jump right into
- 0:59it, Tina, OK? OK, so for our very first point
- 1:04counterpoint, and this is a topic near and dear to my heart
- 1:09because it drives me insane, we're going to talk about the
- 1:13Charleston specifically the second round.
- 1:16To stop or not to stop? And and we've had some lively
- 1:20conversations while playing. Oh my gosh.
- 1:24OK, so as we all know, the Charleston is the part of the
- 1:28game where we try to build our hand by getting rid of tiles we
- 1:32don't want and collecting tiles that will hopefully get us to
- 1:35that coveted mahjong, right? So there's two rounds of the
- 1:39Charleston, right over left and then left over, right.
- 1:45So after that first left, all it takes is one person to say I'm
- 1:50done with the Charleston. And I just wanted to kind of
- 1:54touch on what I think is good strategy about when to stop the
- 1:59Charleston or when to keep going.
- 2:02Personally, I think it should be a rare occasion to stop the
- 2:07Charleston. I think unless you are three or
- 2:13four tiles away from actual mahjong, you should keep the
- 2:16Charleston going because stopping that Charleston you're
- 2:20losing the opportunity to see potentially 12 more tiles.
- 2:25You need 14 tiles for mahjong. If you're sitting on a hand
- 2:28where you still need 7 or 8 tiles to get mahjong, it's
- 2:32nonsense and terrible strategy to stop the Charleston.
- 2:36And seasoned players are going to be furious if you
- 2:40consistently stop that Charleston because you're it
- 2:43just. It makes me insane and I it's a
- 2:45very and this is going to sound judgy, I know it is.
- 2:48So I'm prepared for the hate. It's a very newbie move to stop
- 2:55the Charleston. Previously, that is very judgy.
- 2:57This is where I know we need to talk about this.
- 3:01Because I if OK again, this is my my thoughts if you're
- 3:06stopping it because you are in between 2 completely different
- 3:10hands. Completely different hands and
- 3:14you just want to keep them to keep your options open.
- 3:16It's a whore. I'm just saying you can do it.
- 3:18Obviously anyone can stop for any reason.
- 3:20It's totally your prerogative. It's just terrible, terrible
- 3:24strategy to be holding on to 2 completely different options.
- 3:29I like to. Keep my options open
- 3:31counterpoint. People are going to be salty
- 3:34with. You, I'm not so much already.
- 3:35I'm not too worried about it, how much other people, what
- 3:39they're going to think. I'm worried about my hand, to be
- 3:41completely honest. I'm being selfish about when I'd
- 3:43want to exactly. However, here's my thing about
- 3:47the Charleston, and I fully understand the strategy point of
- 3:50if you have three or more that do not match what line you're
- 3:55going for, yes, you still have the option to get more to do a
- 3:59second Charleston. Here's my issue.
- 4:01If I really have three that I want to, you know, use in the
- 4:06Charleston, if I pick up one, if I'm doing the second Charleston
- 4:10and I get a tile that I want, I only then have two tiles that I
- 4:16want to get rid of. But now I've committed.
- 4:18No, you're right. That I have to do 3 and I think
- 4:21no. But then just do 4 like if you
- 4:23have 4 tiles you. Can I'm just saying my counter
- 4:27to that is sometimes I don't want to take the risk even if I
- 4:31have. Well, that's different than
- 4:32having 7 tiles. Because you're that's like a lot
- 4:36of two different. I don't want to do the second
- 4:39Charleston. Teresa, what's?
- 4:40Well, I let's keep my. Options open, which admittedly
- 4:44is a weakness in my playing style.
- 4:47I have a hard time committing to a hand.
- 4:49I'm getting better, you guys have to admit.
- 4:51Yes, I'm getting a little bit better.
- 4:54Doing 1 Charleston as well. It's not like you don't.
- 4:57I'm not saying there's never. I'm not saying I'm stopping it
- 5:01is always wrong. I'm saying always stopping it.
- 5:04I don't always stop it. I mostly stop it, OK, But that's
- 5:08usually because you're right, I have two different hands and I
- 5:12can't decide. So I sort of maybe have one or
- 5:15two that I'm willing to get rid of.
- 5:17So I'm learning, I'm evolving. I'm sure if there's people out
- 5:20there who can relate to me, but I agree I do need to make a
- 5:25decision a little. Faster.
- 5:26Amy, what do you Amy, what do you think about this?
- 5:28I think that particularly with the National Mahjong League
- 5:33card, not other cards, whether we like it or not, a lot of wins
- 5:39and Dragons end up being categorized as junk tiles and
- 5:44it's a game of pass the trash. Yes.
- 5:47That's a good point. And I am impatient.
- 5:51And when I see that occurring, right, I'm like, well, this is
- 5:56I'm gonna, we're wasting our time because everybody's just
- 5:58passing their trash with these winds and Dragons and let's move
- 6:00on. Yeah.
- 6:01Yeah, but. When you stop because of that
- 6:04reason, the same old stuff, blah, blah, blah, I don't think
- 6:08it's a strong case because even one helpful tile in that second
- 6:14round is going to be helpful. And if you and because you're
- 6:17going to end up, I mean it's going to end at some point
- 6:20anyway. So you might as well get the
- 6:22opportunity to see as many tiles.
- 6:23As you can, yeah. But I agree with Amy, and again,
- 6:26maybe this this is the way I think about it and I think a lot
- 6:28of people think about it, even though technically it's not
- 6:30right, is you want to get through to start the game.
- 6:34Like the Charleston is a precursor to the game, when in
- 6:37actuality it is a part of the game.
- 6:39It's a really important, but sometimes you just want to get
- 6:43going. And.
- 6:44Horrible. If I'm, if I'm in that mood, I
- 6:47will be like, no, I, I don't want to do it.
- 6:50And I like, I really like. That's one thing about mahjong.
- 6:53I like that one person gets to decide.
- 6:55You don't need the majority. You don't need consensus.
- 6:58One person gets to stop it and you're kind of showing your
- 7:02hands in a way that you got a pretty darn good hand to begin
- 7:06with if you're going to. Should that should be the case?
- 7:08That should be the case. But just being, I'm just saying
- 7:12it's such a good opportunity to build your hand.
- 7:14I mean, you're trying to build the best hand you can, so just
- 7:16arbitrarily stopping it because you're bored of it.
- 7:18Never arbitrarily stop. I general genuinely think I only
- 7:23have two, one or two tiles that I'm willing to let go of.
- 7:26Yeah. I would say that I am precisely
- 7:28calculating what is the likelihood of me getting a
- 7:32better tile other than some stupid wind or dragon that I
- 7:35don't need. But you don't, and I say it's
- 7:37not worth it. But.
- 7:38Oh God, yeah, I agree. That makes me insane.
- 7:41Unless you are like 4 tiles away from mahjong, there is no
- 7:46mathematical reason why you should stop the child.
- 7:48That according to my calculations.
- 7:50No what? If you have half of one hand and
- 7:52half of another. One listeners, we have this same
- 7:56conversation every single day we.
- 7:59Have. To listen.
- 8:00To this. It is fun to watch Tina.
- 8:04And I would say this is probably the biggest influence of why
- 8:08Tina started teaching mahjong, so she could get in front of
- 8:12sharing her deep thoughts about the freaking.
- 8:14Charleston. I do.
- 8:16I teach. She's.
- 8:16Cute when she's angry though. I'm not angry, I'm just
- 8:19passionate about it now. One of the things we talked
- 8:22about though about the Charleston, another reason why
- 8:24you may not do the second Charleston is if you have a
- 8:27house rule, which we sometimes do, which we have a house rule.
- 8:32I have thoughts called the Watusi.
- 8:34Now there might be different versions of this.
- 8:36What that means is after in place of the courtesy pass, you
- 8:41take 5 tiles from the wall, the wall every player gets to put up
- 8:45to 5 tiles in. You smush them around you.
- 8:48You pick however many you put in.
- 8:50Sometimes you might pick up your own tile, but it's a quicker way
- 8:54in my mind to offload some tiles you don't like.
- 8:58There's a possibility that you get to have a joker.
- 9:00Now I know everybody doesn't do that.
- 9:02It's maybe you've never heard of it.
- 9:04My point is, is that you might have a house rule that may be a
- 9:08reason why you don't want to do the second Charleston that's.
- 9:11Part of why the Watusi drives me crazy is because you people chop
- 9:15off the Charleston well. That's not true though, because
- 9:18again, if I have three or more tiles I will do a second
- 9:21Charleston and then the Watusi and it's a super bonus.
- 9:24That's true. Well, clearly we have different
- 9:27thoughts. On this wait, we'll we'll keep
- 9:29discussing. Is the juice worth the squeeze?
- 9:31Oh my God, thank you. It.
- 9:33Is always there's no downside to other away if you OK.
- 9:40My mental health. This is my no.
- 9:42This is my final thought because it's true if you are more than 4
- 9:48tiles. If you need more than 4 tiles
- 9:50for mahjong, there is no good reason to stop the frickin
- 9:56Charleston. Disagree all.
- 10:01Right, I think. I should Tina needs to take a
- 10:03Tina take. Take deep breaths.
- 10:04Let's do a little breathing exercise.
- 10:06I need. To OK, great point.
- 10:08Counterpoint first one we got ladies.
- 10:10That was some good stuff. I love you all, even if you're
- 10:14on each. Other even if we yell at you're
- 10:16cursing us OK OK let's move on to some shenanigans yes Amy Amy
- 10:21to get us to something we can agree on God this whole.
- 10:24Podcast is shenanigans. Well, that's true.
- 10:27Lord it Gideon. All right, so welcome to the
- 10:32house shenanigans segment where we discuss stuff that people
- 10:38make up. So people make up stuff and they
- 10:40decide that's how they're going to play and everybody accept it,
- 10:43accepts it so it. Makes it fun.
- 10:46It does. So today we are gonna discuss
- 10:49variations of the discard pile. There is no specific rule for
- 10:55this, I believe. OK, so this is just your style
- 11:01of your table. So we were taught when we.
- 11:06Took our lessons. Took our lessons on discarding
- 11:10it in a row. So we start a line of the
- 11:15discards against one of the racks, and we go forward and
- 11:19create nicely and orderly. We.
- 11:22Call it a tapestry it makes. A.
- 11:24It's also how if you play mahjong for friends online, it's
- 11:29how the tiles are put out there. It's just.
- 11:32In or in an order. Well, they're not.
- 11:33In order. In order.
- 11:34It's just in rows. It's not just.
- 11:36You're tossing them Willy nilly. Yeah, on your mat.
- 11:39Which you can do, some people do just toss them into the middle,
- 11:42so. Yeah, so I was dismayed when I
- 11:45did go out and play in the wild and recognize that not everybody
- 11:49knows about the tapestry. Now everybody does this.
- 11:51Most people don't do the tapestry.
- 11:53Yes, but then how can you even see what's going on?
- 11:56I. Have to pay attention.
- 11:57Well, that's hard for me. Yes, so, so that's one extreme.
- 12:04We actually, as we played as sisters, we did do some games
- 12:09where we tried to take this tapestry to the next level and
- 12:13we actually tried to organize the discard pile in order like
- 12:16by suit and by sequence. And the goal of this was so that
- 12:22we could easily peruse when we were looking for a tile, we
- 12:25could quickly and easily find it.
- 12:28But I think the general consensus was we didn't like it.
- 12:30I think people didn't like managing.
- 12:32It in the ass it was too. Much.
- 12:34It took a lot of time to rearrange the tiles, to insert
- 12:38you know what you needed to. And it was a distraction.
- 12:40It was kind of a pain, yeah. And it didn't pay off in my
- 12:43opinion. I.
- 12:44Agree, I think it's a little too much hand holding but then
- 12:48that's Tina talking. Yeah, right.
- 12:50Some of. Us like a little.
- 12:51Bit so some. Of us.
- 12:52Thank you. Yeah, some of us need a little
- 12:54bit more mental capacity support than you.
- 12:57Okay, yeah, so one other thought I had on this was that, thank
- 13:04goodness some games like gin rummy actually have your discard
- 13:08pile be face down. So Can you imagine if the
- 13:11discard pile for mahjong was you actually have to place it face
- 13:15down? Good.
- 13:15Point wait, has anybody ever played that way?
- 13:17I don't know, but I feel like that's taking it to the next
- 13:19level. Well, no, because you have to
- 13:20see what you're discarding so that you can call it.
- 13:23What I mean? Well, it's.
- 13:24Dead, yeah, but also you. I mean, you want to be able to
- 13:27see what's been discarded so that you can make tactical
- 13:30maneuvers and you're pivoting. Right.
- 13:31I mean, that's just saying that would take.
- 13:33Away. Make it very well.
- 13:34That would be nonsense. Well, I thought you liked to
- 13:37challenge. Yeah, I.
- 13:38Do like to challenge. I do like to challenge and
- 13:40that's why I kind of prefer the Willy nilly discard.
- 13:45The Willy nilly to me was so disconcerning to me.
- 13:48I have a. Question.
- 13:49We started with the tapestry. And it was.
- 13:51Kind of nice push out a wall discarded tiles get in a way
- 13:54it's just it's. So I have a question.
- 13:57Is just discarding Willy nilly the same thing as what some
- 14:02people refer to as messy? No, no, it's completely
- 14:05different. That's different.
- 14:07That's different. I think we we will cover that in
- 14:09another that's a. Whole different.
- 14:10It's not, so it's not synonymous.
- 14:11No, no, no, no, no, no. OK, that's a really good point,
- 14:13but. Some people when they play, like
- 14:16to play so that they're not making it easier for the other
- 14:20people to win, which is why throwing it out just sort of
- 14:24Willy nilly it it, it UPS the stakes.
- 14:28What I, what I don't like about it is you can't tell.
- 14:31It's not like looking back. Oh, it's, it's messy and I can't
- 14:33focus on it. It's, it's hard to tell which
- 14:35one was discarded. Like somebody could say it And
- 14:38if I'm not paying attention, I forget and it's I can't find it.
- 14:42If it's in kind of an order, I know where to look as far as
- 14:45what it is. It is part of the game.
- 14:47Tina, we're fighting menopause here.
- 14:49Come on, we need a little help. I don't mind.
- 14:52I don't mind the tapestry. I really don't.
- 14:54So, so I will say this, our experience though is we
- 14:57typically use the tapestry. However, when we play with
- 15:01blanks, what we found with the tapestry is that the person who
- 15:07is like next to the tapestry has an advantage.
- 15:10Because they. You can more sneakily.
- 15:12You can't be as sneaky with the tapestry.
- 15:14So. We.
- 15:15Have made decisions in the past to say, hey, if we're playing
- 15:18with blanks we're going to do the random discard.
- 15:22Yeah, 'cause it was very it. And in fact, I think, I think
- 15:26that was the day I won March because it was in front of me
- 15:29and it was much and I just happened to get quite a few
- 15:32blanks and it was much easier to be sneaky as opposed to you who
- 15:34was like climbing over the table trying to get it.
- 15:37So that's an excellent. One get to swap out a discard
- 15:40though I still think blanks are. Wonderful.
- 15:43But there's no. I mean, I think it's interesting
- 15:45that there's no official right or wrong.
- 15:46Yeah, you're right. You would think there'd be a
- 15:48rule for that 'cause there's a rule for every elder.
- 15:50I just think the standard, I mean when you go out in the wild
- 15:54and you play, I think that just the random discard is what
- 15:57you'll see more. Yeah.
- 15:59So for. What it's worth?
- 16:01A question for everyone to reflect on, right?
- 16:03Is and yeah, go ahead. Do you want to adjust the game
- 16:07to make it easier or more difficult?
- 16:09That's a decision we all have to make easier.
- 16:11Do you thrive in chaos or do you like a straight line?
- 16:16Yes, something for you and your table to decide.
- 16:18That's a good. How do you do it listeners?
- 16:21Is there another? Way to organize your discarded
- 16:25tiles to wear nothing. How could that be?
- 16:26Littlehouseofmaj@gmail.com People are creative.
- 16:29Because Maj. is fabulous no matter how you choose to play.
- 16:32That's right. And that's coming from Tina.
- 16:36OK, if you're out there listening, check us out on
- 16:38Instagram, Facebook, e-mail us at littlehouseofmaj@gmail.com.
- 16:43That's a wrap, ladies. And we'll see you next time on
- 16:46the. Little House of Maj. everyone.
- 16:49Is welcome in the little house.
