- 0:00Podcasthero.com. Welcome to The Daily Quote, the
- 0:04podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm your host, Andrew Mcgibbon, and let's jump right into
- 0:11today's quote from C Northcott Parkinson, a British naval
- 0:15historian who studied how organizations work.
- 0:19In his 1957 book Parkinson's Law, he described what he called
- 0:24the law of triviality. He once said the time spent on
- 0:30any item of the agenda will be the inverse proportion of the
- 0:35sum involve. What does that mean?
- 0:39Inverse proportion? Basically, the less important
- 0:43something is, the more time we spend on it.
- 0:48Parkinson illustrated this with a brilliant example.
- 0:51Committee approving plans for a nuclear power plant spend most
- 0:55of their time debating what materials to use for the staff
- 0:58bicycle shed, while barely discussing the actual nuclear
- 1:02reactor. Why?
- 1:04Because everyone understood bike sheds.
- 1:07Everyone could have an opinion, everyone felt qualified to
- 1:12contribute. But the nuclear reactor?
- 1:15Too complex, too intimidating. So they approved it quickly and
- 1:19moved on. This happens everywhere in
- 1:23business and your personal life right now.
- 1:27You'll spend hours deciding which CRM sales software to use,
- 1:31but only 15 minutes making the sales calls.
- 1:35You'll spend days researching the perfect best chair, but
- 1:38won't spend an afternoon planning your career trajectory.
- 1:43You'll obsess over small decisions where everyone has an
- 1:47opinion while the mission critical tasks that require deep
- 1:50thinking get ignored. The bike shed is easy to
- 1:54understand. The nuclear reactor is hard, so
- 1:58we waste time on bike sheds while the reactor gets built
- 2:02without proper scrutiny. So here's the question, what's
- 2:06your bike shed right now? What trivial activities are you
- 2:10spending time on while the hard, important work goes untouched?
- 2:15Because the law of triviality isn't just about committees,
- 2:20it's about you today. Stop the dating the bike shed.
- 2:25Go build that reactor. That's it for today.
- 2:29I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 2:34tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 2:39with another daily quote.
