- 0:00Chapter 4 of Amos Dear God, please be with us as we read
- 0:04through this chapter. Give us wisdom, insight and
- 0:08revelation through the Holy Spirit.
- 0:10We ask for this in Jesus name, Amen.
- 0:15So just to for this setting to take place so that we know the
- 0:20background of what's happening at this time.
- 0:22The there are two different kingdoms of Israel.
- 0:25There are two kings of Israel. There's the northern Kingdom and
- 0:29the southern Kingdom of southern Kingdom of Judah with Benjamin
- 0:34and the northern Kingdom of the other 10 tribes.
- 0:38And so Amos is from Judah, but he's, he's prophesying about,
- 0:45he's just a regular shepherd. But God is speaking with him and
- 0:50warning him and telling him to warn others.
- 0:53So this warning that he is giving is interesting because he
- 1:04was warning if they didn't make a change, if they didn't repent,
- 1:08these things would come upon them.
- 1:10And because this is historical, we know that they didn't make
- 1:15the changes and these things did come upon them.
- 1:19But what we can learn from this chapter and see in this chapter
- 1:23is the way God does things and why?
- 1:27Because it says, like, here's what's going to happen and then
- 1:30it gives the purpose of it. And so I think from that
- 1:34perspective, we can apply it to us today.
- 1:38Anyway, we'll get started on this.
- 1:39Israel has not returned to God. Hear this, Hear this word, you
- 1:46cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria. Samaria was the capital of the
- 1:51northern 10 tribes. You women who oppress the poor
- 1:55and crush the needy and say to your husbands, bring us some
- 1:59drinks. So they're just living in luxury
- 2:03and they're what's on their mind is nothing about the poor and
- 2:08needy. But where's my next drink?
- 2:11And I think in our world we can relate to that too.
- 2:13There are times in life or people in certain seasons of
- 2:18life where they're not thinking about anybody else.
- 2:20They're thinking about where's my next drink, you know, where's
- 2:23the fun? The Sovereign Lord has sworn by
- 2:28His Holiness. The time will surely come when
- 2:32you will be taken away with hooks, the last of you with fish
- 2:37hooks. So he's talking about captivity.
- 2:41These people are completely unaware.
- 2:44They're just thinking about their next drink.
- 2:46They're celebrating, they're in comfort, they're not concerned
- 2:50about the poor or the needy. They're spending their money on
- 2:54self indulgences. So that I think we can all apply
- 2:58to our own lives and evaluate how are we spending the
- 3:02resources that God ultimately gave us.
- 3:05You will go, you will each go straight out through the
- 3:09breeches in the wall, and you will be cast out toward Harmon,
- 3:15declares the Lord. Go to Bethel and sin, go to
- 3:19Gilgal and sin yet more. Bring your sacrifices every
- 3:23morning, your ties every three years.
- 3:26Now when I read that, I thought every three years, I thought
- 3:29they tithes every year. So I had to look that up.
- 3:33In an ancient, he ancient Israelite tradition, every three
- 3:39years was called a tithe. And that was for the people it
- 3:45would it would be a 10% of what was produced and it was done
- 3:50every three years and it went to the Levites to sustain them.
- 3:56And this was an offering that was given by women, orphans,
- 4:02foreigners, strangers. So everybody was supporting
- 4:06Levites, which you know, who were the servants of the temple.
- 4:12And that's how they they weren't, they didn't have an
- 4:15inheritance. So they had to survive based on
- 4:19the tie that the ties that were received.
- 4:21The normal population did it every every year, but the first
- 4:26people had the poor ties, which was every three years.
- 4:32And maybe I'm misunderstanding this because I'm thinking that
- 4:37they probably had an additional maybe tithe for the people who
- 4:42were poor or were it was at the that were actually contributing
- 4:46this. That is the question.
- 4:47I don't know. I did look this up before this
- 4:49podcast, but it was a special, it was a different tithe.
- 4:54And when I started thinking about tithing, we think about
- 4:58that in terms of people, you know, today, they think about
- 5:02people giving money to a church. But if you think about what was
- 5:07the original intention of tithing, it was to give food and
- 5:13shelter basically to the the people who were servants of God,
- 5:18who were servants of the temple, the Levites.
- 5:22They were, they were working on quote, the Lord's house, the
- 5:26temple. And so they didn't have a
- 5:29regular job because they were really dedicated to working on,
- 5:34you know, what the temple needed.
- 5:36So they needed some way to have food and support and that was
- 5:40how the community supported them.
- 5:42Then also, perhaps what this is saying is the, the poor tithe is
- 5:48that they were asking for money for the women and orphans, the
- 5:52ones who didn't have anything in addition to the Levites.
- 5:56That's what I'm thinking. I misunderstood it at first, but
- 6:00that's what I'm thinking is the, the, the, the three-year tithe,
- 6:05because he's, this is written to those in luxury that are not
- 6:09caring about the oppressed and not caring about the widows or
- 6:13the needy. They're just looking for, you
- 6:15know, bring me some drinks. Let's have fun so burn leavened
- 6:21bread as a think offering and brag about your free will
- 6:24offerings. Boast about them.
- 6:26You Israelites. This is what you love to do
- 6:28declares the Lord. So people are just, you know,
- 6:32sinning because he says go to Bethel and sin, go to Gilgal and
- 6:35sin yet more. So they're just like doing, you
- 6:39know, it's like there's something in scripture that says
- 6:43that they are far from me. You know, they're close to me
- 6:46through their lips, but far from me in their heart where they can
- 6:50speak it and they can look like it on the outside, but it's like
- 6:54it's fake. It's not.
- 6:56Their hearts are far from them. They're not getting the
- 6:59intention like God has said many times in Scripture that I don't
- 7:04want your sacrifices. I want mercy and compassion and,
- 7:09you know, caring about other people and justice.
- 7:12And that's what he wants. It's not the sacrifices.
- 7:15The sacrifices were there when we fall short or when the
- 7:19Israelites fell short so that their lives were not gone.
- 7:23I mean, it was like a substitute.
- 7:24It was not. That wasn't the ultimate goal.
- 7:27The ultimate goal was to change your behavior and not, you know,
- 7:33not be like that and they're missing the whole message.
- 7:37So instead they're just sinning and then giving and and they're
- 7:41thinking everything's great. I and then here's what God says
- 7:47I I gave you empty stomachs in every city and lack of bread in
- 7:53every town, yet you have not returned to me declares the
- 7:58Lord. So famine, and that's from God.
- 8:02And there was a purpose to have people return to God.
- 8:07I also withheld rain from you when the harvest was still three
- 8:12months away. I sent rain on one town but
- 8:15withheld it from another. Our field 1 field had rain,
- 8:20another had none and dried up. People staggered from town to
- 8:24town for water but did not get enough to drink Yet you have not
- 8:30returned to me, declares the Lord.
- 8:33So God does use weather events and the purpose to return people
- 8:40to Him. A lot of times in the good
- 8:44times, people are satisfied with everything.
- 8:47There's no quote need for God, but there truly is.
- 8:51But people don't think they have a need for God, and so they
- 8:54forget about God. But then when things get really
- 8:57bad, when things get really tough and there's nothing else,
- 9:01then they call upon God. But even in this situation, like
- 9:04God's giving them these warnings and he's, you know, famine, He's
- 9:10got weather either giving rain or withholding rain, and they're
- 9:14still not turning to him. It goes to say further, verse 9,
- 9:21many times I struck your gardens and vineyards, destroying them
- 9:26with pride and mildew. Locusts devoured your fig and
- 9:31olive trees, yet you have not returned to me.
- 9:36So there's crop failure and that's also another indication
- 9:40to turn to God. We know like in the in the end
- 9:45times that there will be a famine across the whole world,
- 9:49but it also talks about a famine of his word.
- 9:52So there's like a a metaphor for that.
- 9:55So, but ultimately the purpose of all of this is that God, what
- 10:00he wants is for people to turn to him.
- 10:04I sent plagues among you as I did to Egypt.
- 10:09So even God will allow plagues to come over a group of people
- 10:17just like he did to eat. There's a purpose, though.
- 10:20I killed your young men with the sword, along with your captured
- 10:26horses. I filled your nostrils with the
- 10:29stench of your camps. Yet you have not returned to me,
- 10:33declares the Lord. So plagues and war are allowed
- 10:38by God, and the purpose is to shake people up, to turn people
- 10:43to God. Yet people don't often turn to
- 10:47God, and that's what he's saying.
- 10:49Yet you have not returned to me. I overthrew some of you.
- 10:53I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. You were like a burning stick
- 10:59snatched from the fire. Yet you have not returned to me.
- 11:03So he overthrew. I don't know exactly what that
- 11:07would mean, but saving them from the snatch, from the fire, I
- 11:12mean, that could be eternal and keeping them from that, but they
- 11:19still did not return. So when God can save us from
- 11:22destruction, that still happens today, but then do we turn to
- 11:27God or do we just momentarily say, oh, thank you, God?
- 11:30And then when life gets good again, ignore God and forget
- 11:33about him. If that's happening, we're doing
- 11:36the same thing that the ancient Israelites did to God.
- 11:40Therefore, this is what I will do to you, Israel, and because I
- 11:45will do this to you, Israel, prepare to meet your God.
- 11:50So he's giving them a warning. He who forms the mountains, who
- 11:55creates the wind, and who reveals his thoughts to mankind.
- 12:02That's like prophets who turns dawn to darkness and treads on
- 12:08the heights of the earth. The Lord God Almighty is His
- 12:12name. That's the end of chapter 4.
- 12:15So we will get into chapter 5, but I'll go through the
- 12:17questions and answers of chapter 4 first.
- 12:22So it says, how would Israel be like a burning stick snatched
- 12:26from the fire? As a result of God's judgement,
- 12:29Israel had been burned but not completely destroyed.
- 12:34However, Israel had not taken this close call seriously and
- 12:38therefore was to be judged again.
- 12:42What does it mean to prepare to meet your God here?
- 12:45It means to get ready for judgment.
- 12:48God had warned Israel repeatedly, but to no avail.
- 12:53Israel would now have the unenviable, the unenviable
- 12:58position of meeting God face to face in judgment.
- 13:03For this generation of Israelites, the judgment would
- 13:05be final and complete. The specific way they would meet
- 13:09God through judgment is not revealed.
- 13:13How does God reveal His thoughts?
- 13:14One way is through calamity, as in the preceding verses.
- 13:19When people are devastated by a flood, hurricane, or war, they
- 13:24start thinking about what's really important in life.
- 13:27In that frame of mind, they are often better able to hear what
- 13:31God has to say to them. What are the heights of the
- 13:36earth? This phrase is wedged into a
- 13:38series of statements about God's control over all the earth, so
- 13:42it may refer to His presence as revealed in the sky.
- 13:46Countless stars, Mile High clouds, and lightning storms are
- 13:49just a few of the dazzling reminders of humanity's relative
- 13:53weakness and transiency when compared with God's awesome
- 13:58power and permanence. OK then chapter 5, A lament and
- 14:03call to repentance. See this is always what the
- 14:06prophets say is repent. Hear this word Israel, this
- 14:11lament I take up concerning you. Fallen is virgin in Israel,
- 14:16never to rise again, deserted in her own land, with no one to
- 14:23lift her up. This is what the sovereign Lord
- 14:26says to Israel. Your city that marches out 1000
- 14:31strong will have only 100 left. Your town that marches out 100
- 14:37strong will only have 10 left. This is what the Lord says to
- 14:41Israel. Seek me and live.
- 14:46So this is His message. Seek me and live.
- 14:49I think this is a message to all of us today.
- 14:52Seek God and live. Do not seek Bethel.
- 14:57That's where false gods were. Do not go to Gilgal.
- 14:59And he was just saying before in the verses, that's where they're
- 15:02going to sin. Don't do those things.
- 15:04Do not journey to Beersheba, for Gilgal will surely go into exile
- 15:10and Bethel will be reduced to nothing.
- 15:13Seek the Lord and live. In other words, repent, turn to
- 15:17God, or he will sweep through the tribes of Joseph like a
- 15:23fire. It will devour them, and Bethel
- 15:28will have no one to quench it. These are those who turn justice
- 15:35into bitterness and cast righteousness to the ground.
- 15:40He who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns midnight into
- 15:45dawn and darkens day into night, who calls for the waters of the
- 15:49sea and pours them out over the face of the land.
- 15:53The Lord is his name. With a blinding flash, he
- 15:58destroys the stronghold and brings the fortified city to
- 16:03ruin. There are those who hate the one
- 16:06who upholds justice in the court and detest the one who tells the
- 16:10truth. You levy a straw tax on the poor
- 16:14and impose a tax on their grain. Therefore, though you have built
- 16:20stone mansions, you will not live in them.
- 16:24Though you have planted lush vineyards, you will not drink
- 16:27their wine, For I know how many are your offenses and how great
- 16:33your sins. These are those who oppress the
- 16:37innocent and take bribes and deprive the poor of justice in
- 16:43the courts. I'm sure we have a lot of that
- 16:45right now where people are taking bribes to do something of
- 16:50an enemy of God, and this is kind of what it's talking about.
- 16:54So that could apply today. If you are doing anything or
- 16:58taking money and you're doing against what God would want, you
- 17:04could fall into this. Therefore the prudent keep quiet
- 17:08in such times, for the times are evil.
- 17:12This threw me off. Therefore, the prudent keep
- 17:14quiet in such times, for the times are evil.
- 17:17So I was thought like, shouldn't the people speak up or they're
- 17:22supposed to be quiet? This seems like different
- 17:24information to me. So the study Bible actually
- 17:27addresses this. It said why would the prudent
- 17:29keep silent? Because nobody would listen
- 17:32anyway. There is a time for silence, a
- 17:35time when speaking up is futile. Ecclesiastes chapter 3 verse 7
- 17:41says this. At such times, the only thing to
- 17:44do is wait for God to bring his judgement.
- 17:49So sometimes I guess that's discernment.
- 17:51That's why we need the Holy Spirit.
- 17:53That's why we need to have a good relationship with God so
- 17:57that we hear the Holy Spirit and we know when to keep our mouth
- 17:59shut and when we're supposed to speak up.
- 18:04Seek good, not evil. So that's reportance.
- 18:07That's seeking good, not evil. Why?
- 18:11That you may live is what it says.
- 18:13So the verse actually says seek good, not evil that you may
- 18:16live. Then the Lord God Almighty will
- 18:19be with you just as you say he is.
- 18:24So there's I think that's OK. First of all, if we are seeking
- 18:28good doesn't say that we have to 100% do good because God gives
- 18:35us, he does give us grace and but seek good like have your
- 18:40heart set on good, not evil, not sin, not things that you know
- 18:45that God doesn't want you to do. Seek the good things that you
- 18:49may live and the Lord will be with you just just as you say he
- 18:55is. So this is interesting just as
- 18:57you say he is. So a lot of times people are
- 18:59right in their sinful state and they're saying the Lord is with
- 19:02them. There might be some good things
- 19:04in their life, but the Lord is not with someone who is
- 19:07unrepentant in their sin that just keeps on sinning.
- 19:12They're they're going to have judgement come against them and
- 19:16they're going to have some suffering occur because God is
- 19:20holy and he wants us to be holy. And if we are still going
- 19:24towards sin, we are not turned to God.
- 19:28We are still like half in, half out.
- 19:31And if you're half in, half out, essentially you're, you're with
- 19:36God's enemy because you haven't rejected the enemy yet.
- 19:40The enemy still has access to your life.
- 19:42And, and you know, is God going to protect?
- 19:48I don't know. That's up to God.
- 19:50God has mercy. But do you want to really chance
- 19:54that? But it does say that if we are
- 19:58seeking good, not evil, God will be with us.
- 20:01That's a promise. So hate evil, love good,
- 20:06maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the Lord God Almighty
- 20:12will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.
- 20:17God often does show mercy. That's the thing that He is
- 20:21compassionate. He is love first and foremost.
- 20:24So He does show mercy to people who have done wrong when they
- 20:30are repentant. And not all people will repent,
- 20:36so God will not show mercy to all people.
- 20:39Therefore, this is what the Lord God the Almighty says.
- 20:43There will be wailing in all the streets and cries of anguish in
- 20:47every public square. The farmers will be summoned to
- 20:51weep and the mourners to wail. There will be wailing in all the
- 20:55vineyards. For I will pass through your
- 20:59mist. God will be there, says the
- 21:02Lord. Now here it starts to talk about
- 21:06the day of the Lord in verse 818.
- 21:08Woe to you who long for the day of the Lord.
- 21:12Now I think of this as like, is this talking about the second
- 21:16coming or is this say you know the day of the Lord?
- 21:19I mean, this sounds like the day that the ultimate judgement will
- 21:23be coming forth when Jesus returns.
- 21:27Why do you long for the day of the Lord?
- 21:30That day will be darkness, not light.
- 21:33It will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a bear.
- 21:40And I'm gonna pause right there because this made me think of
- 21:43the Daniel prophecies, which we haven't read yet in this Bible
- 21:47study podcast. But the the lion was symbolic of
- 21:53Babylon and the bear was like the meaty, the Medes and the
- 21:57Persians. So there was this, this
- 22:02governmental overtaking of the land of Israel, and Babylon had
- 22:07it at 1 conquered that, and then the Medes and the Persians
- 22:11conquered it also, and that was a bear.
- 22:14And so I wondered if these were references to that.
- 22:18So it will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a
- 22:21bear as though he entered his house and rested his hand on the
- 22:26wall only to have a snake bite him.
- 22:29Then I'm thinking the snake is that Satan will not the day of
- 22:34the Lord be darkness, not light, pitch dark without a ray of now
- 22:43when I read that I actually put a note in my Bible because I had
- 22:46a dream. I had actually three different
- 22:49rapture dreams and in the three different dreams that occurred
- 22:54at different times, I mean, I forgot the sequencing of them,
- 23:01but my first one was, I think it was in April of 22.
- 23:08Anyway, I had a couple, I had three dreams and, and the one
- 23:12thing that was consistent in all dreams was that everything went
- 23:16black and then the rapture occurred.
- 23:20So when I read this, I think about what the scripture says,
- 23:25will not the day of the Lord be darkness, not light, pitch dark
- 23:29without a ray of brightness. So I wonder honestly, this was
- 23:34before I was like knew any knew a lot about the rapture or
- 23:38anything. This this was something that I
- 23:40started after I had the three dreams.
- 23:43I was like, does this say anything in the Bible about
- 23:45everything going dark before this happens?
- 23:48And it is like before the day of the Lord comes, it says the the
- 23:53moon will turn to blood, the sun will not give its light and the
- 23:56stars will fall from the sky. So that just sounds.
- 24:02I don't know. It could be interpreted a lot of
- 24:03different ways, but in my like I said, I had three dreams and
- 24:07they had different scenarios and they were about the rapture.
- 24:10And in every single one of them it went black first.
- 24:14Like there was darkness first. Now, whether that's a literal
- 24:17darkness or this is a metaphorical darkness, I'm not
- 24:21sure. But it, I felt like that dream
- 24:25revealed something to me and then I found it in scripture
- 24:29where that supports what happens.
- 24:31Like, I didn't know that until I started seeking like, is this,
- 24:35you know, what's significant about this dream Anyway, going
- 24:39back, I, I hate, I despise your religious festivals.
- 24:45So God is not about religion. If we feel like we're, you know,
- 24:49these perfect, we do these religious acts, even like Jewish
- 24:54or Christian. If we're like thinking that
- 24:57we're, we, you know, go to church on Sunday for Christians
- 25:02or you know, honor the Sabbath, but yet we are far from God.
- 25:07He doesn't, He doesn't care about the acts that we do.
- 25:10He cares about our actions and our heart, our actions towards
- 25:14others, what is in our heart. And if we are caring about
- 25:19thinking about God, if we care about him or if we're just going
- 25:23through the motions just to say we did it or just to check the
- 25:27box and feel like if we're a Christian, like we're a good
- 25:30Christian because we went to church, well, God doesn't care
- 25:34about that. He doesn't, I mean, he does want
- 25:36us to meet with other believers, but, and church is a way to do
- 25:42that, but there are other ways to do that as well.
- 25:45But he wants a relationship, communication with people.
- 25:49He doesn't want us just to go through the act of going to
- 25:52church and incantations and then we're finished.
- 25:58You know, like that's not what God wants.
- 26:00He wants a real conversation, real communication with us.
- 26:06I hate, I despise your religious festivals.
- 26:08Your assemblies are a stench to me.
- 26:11Even though you bring me burnt offerings and green offerings, I
- 26:16will not accept them. Though you bring choice
- 26:20fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them.
- 26:24Away with the noise of your songs.
- 26:28I will not listen to the music of your harps, but let justice
- 26:35roll on like a river, righteousness like a never
- 26:40failing stream. Did you bring me sacrifices and
- 26:44offerings? 40 years in the wilderness,
- 26:46People of Israel, you have lifted up the shrine of your
- 26:51king, the pedestal of your idols, the star of your God,
- 26:57which you made for yourselves. Therefore I will send you into
- 27:03exile beyond Damascus says the Lord whose name is God almighty.
- 27:09That's the end of chapter 5. So when I read that I I really
- 27:14went down a rabbit hole because I read the star of your God that
- 27:20is also translated or lifted up the the lifted up Sakuth, your
- 27:28king and Herahim your idols, your star gods Septuagint lifted
- 27:35up the shrine of Molech and the star of your God Reffen and
- 27:41their idols. So Reffen and Molech, there were
- 27:48these like symbols and stars that somehow also I found that
- 27:55it relates to Saturn, which I know is like a Greek God, but it
- 28:00all ties together. And then there's something like
- 28:02Kiyun, KIYUN. So this is all this idolatrous
- 28:09worship and it's not worshipping God, it is worshipping something
- 28:15else. And I believe that that is
- 28:19something else is Satan or his other fallen angels.
- 28:23That's what I believe it potentially is because of the
- 28:27book of Enoch, which I know is not in the Bible but just
- 28:32search. Go on even Wikipedia and search
- 28:36Saturn and just find our Refan REPHAN and Molech and just see
- 28:44what this stuff is. It's like child sacrifice.
- 28:47It's this idolatrous stuff. And people are not connected to
- 28:52God at this point. And even today, I mean, think
- 28:56about, Oh my gosh, it's it's just so disheartening.
- 28:59I saw a reel of a soccer match where it was, it was like the
- 29:08team, but it was like some they were called the devils and it
- 29:13had this like Satanic or Baphomet symbol out in the crowd
- 29:18of people and it raised up this devil thing.
- 29:21And I just thought, you know, we need to stay away from this kind
- 29:23of stuff because it just, you know, I, I know there's probably
- 29:28like innocent people who aren't thinking anything of it, But
- 29:33what does that say to God? What do you think God thinks
- 29:36when he sees that? Do you think he's happy about
- 29:40that? Do you think it's a slap in
- 29:42God's face? Like God created all of us.
- 29:45He sent his son to die for us on the cross so that we could be in
- 29:49his Kingdom and have the inheritance.
- 29:51And then we are naming teams of, you know, as his enemy.
- 29:57It doesn't really make sense. It seems very dark and it's just
- 30:02showing us how ignorant we are in this world.
- 30:06And I think even at this time with Israel, I bet there were a
- 30:09lot of people that they were just going along with the crowd.
- 30:11They didn't even like think about what they were doing.
- 30:14They were just thinking about their fun, like, hey, bring me
- 30:17another drink, you know, and not even thinking about the
- 30:23metaphorical or symbolism or what the effect, what they were
- 30:28just like gradually being LED into this manipulative deception
- 30:35where they are actually like worshipping some, you know, like
- 30:41they're celebrating God's enemy when that team wins and it you
- 30:47know, it's called the Devils or whatever and they're cheering
- 30:51that on you. Do you think, you know, OK, put
- 30:55this in like, I don't know how to do it because the Bible talks
- 30:59about like relationships a lot about adultery and about
- 31:02marriages and stuff. And those are metaphors for the
- 31:05relationship with God and the sacredness of it.
- 31:08So think about this like it if you had a just even a boyfriend
- 31:15or a girlfriend or a husband or a wife, and then you got
- 31:19separated from that person and you got separated from that
- 31:23person because of another person.
- 31:27So another person came into the you know, the mix.
- 31:32A third person came into the mix and caused the separation of
- 31:35that boyfriend, girlfriend or husband wife.
- 31:39And then after that, there you, that person that was separated
- 31:46then has a team that's named, you know, that's or starts
- 31:53celebrating the name of the person who separated everything.
- 31:57I mean, if you just put it in your own human terms, like how
- 32:00would you react if you were the one who had a third person come
- 32:05in to split up a relationship that you had?
- 32:08And then afterwards, not only did that happen, so there's pain
- 32:13along with that, but then there's like the celebration and
- 32:17they're using the name of that person who separated.
- 32:20I think everyone, if you can apply it to yourselves, can
- 32:25relate to this. Like, how would that make you
- 32:26feel? Well, think about how does that
- 32:29make God feel? Because God does feel things and
- 32:33God does see things and God wants that relationship.
- 32:36He wants that intimate relationship with us, and yet
- 32:39when we do ignorant things like we do in the world and don't
- 32:45think it has any significance, it does to God.
- 32:48It's very clear because he points this out when he's
- 32:50talking to Israel. So I will do the questions and
- 32:54answers for chapter 5 and then we will conclude this podcast.
- 32:59So chapter 5 says what is a lament?
- 33:04This suggests 2 ideas. 1A. Musical or poetic dirge, A song
- 33:09of sorrow or two, A recognition of judgment which seems to be
- 33:13primarily implied here. Why call Israel a virgin?
- 33:17This word picture shows how radically Israel has changed.
- 33:23Once pure and chosen by God, Israel has had lost her
- 33:29virginity by committing prostitution with other lovers.
- 33:33Israel was unfaithful to the Lord and worshipped idols.
- 33:38Several prophets pictured the nation as female, some sometimes
- 33:44using the more descriptive word virgin, perhaps to accent
- 33:49Israel's fall from purity. What attracted people to these
- 33:54places? Each of these places had
- 33:58historical significance. It was at Bethel that Israel's
- 34:01ancestor Abraham built his first altar in Canaan.
- 34:06Gilgal was where Israel set up camp after Joshua LED them
- 34:11across the Jordan River. And Beersheba was the place
- 34:15where Abraham had found a deep well and where the Lord had
- 34:19appeared to Isaac and Jacob. Despite God's command to worship
- 34:24only in Jerusalem, the people of Israel traveled to these places
- 34:29to worship. Worse, they worshipped Pagan
- 34:33gods as well as the Lord there. What are the Pleiades in the
- 34:38Hawaiian? These are constellations seen in
- 34:41the night sky, and they refer generally to God's creation of
- 34:45the stars. God's majesty, sovereignty over
- 34:50heaven and earth is being emphasized.
- 34:53What kind of court system did Amos know?
- 34:55In the Old Testament, the Royal Court of the king included a
- 34:59functioning judicial system. For example, Solomon was
- 35:03revealed as an ideal king whose role contained A judiciary
- 35:09element. Priests also performed the role
- 35:12of judge as they sought to apply the Torah or the Law of Moses to
- 35:17various situations in Israel's life.
- 35:20The prophets often lamented the corruption of the courts and
- 35:24their deprivation of the poor and marginalized.
- 35:30Why would we read this before? How could ordinary people
- 35:36maintain justice in the courts? Infidelity had infected Israel
- 35:41from top to bottom. The courts and their judges were
- 35:45thoroughly corrupt. But the defendants and
- 35:48plaintiffs who appeared in the courts were no better.
- 35:51They were unfaithful to God, and God held them all responsible
- 35:55for what happened in the courts. Why would they wail when the
- 36:00Lord passed through their midst? Because this time God's presence
- 36:03would bring judgement, not blessing.
- 36:06Perhaps the lack of rain or the armed invaders would destroy
- 36:10their great vineyards, a symbol of their affluence.
- 36:13The drought devastated the agricultural landscape, causing
- 36:17famine and starvation. Why did they want the day of the
- 36:22Lord to come? A popular sort of preaching that
- 36:25denied the problems Amos was denouncing had arisen throughout
- 36:29the land. The essence of this preaching
- 36:32was that everything was all right, prosperity lay just
- 36:36ahead, and God would deliver them from their enemies on the
- 36:40day of the Lord. What they thought would be a day
- 36:44of reckoning for their enemies, however, actually turned out to
- 36:47be a day of reckoning for them. Why did God hate the customs He
- 36:54himself had established? God set up these customs as
- 36:58tangible outward expressions to be practiced by His people to
- 37:03demonstrate their faith in and love for God.
- 37:08But many of the Israelites of Amos's day were hypocrites.
- 37:12They attended feast and offered sacrifices, but their love for
- 37:15God had long gone, long ago died.
- 37:19They worshipped to appear respectable, but their hearts
- 37:23had grown cold and empty. Their religion was insincere.
- 37:28It had form but no substance, and their religion was even used
- 37:33to worship idols. It wasn't the customs that God
- 37:37hated, it was their hypocrisy. It was a great way to explain
- 37:41it. And that's the end of the
- 37:44questions and answers for Chapter 5.
