- 0:01Our consciousness tends to be so fluid and so mixed
- 0:05that it is difficult, if not practically impossible,
- 0:09to distinguish what represents our own internal
- 0:12process and what is coming to us from outside, from
- 0:16our interaction with others, from environmental
- 0:19influences. None of these things remains
- 0:22pure and unadulterated. There
- 0:25is a constant mixing process that goes on. We
- 0:29can observe the thoughts, we can observe the
- 0:32emotions, we can observe the vital reactions, we can
- 0:36observe the physical responses, but we generally
- 0:40are not able to separate the various elements or
- 0:43threads that constitute each of these things and see
- 0:47clearly what we are taking on and how it is impacting
- 0:51us from our external life. If
- 0:55we can identify one clear benefit from a period of
- 0:58separation from the life of the world, through
- 1:01withdrawing to the cave, the ashram, the monastery,
- 1:05the mountain or the desert or the forest, it is that
- 1:09we can theoretically use that time, examining our
- 1:12own process and thus establish what may be
- 1:16considered a baseline representing our current
- 1:19organized being and personality. Obviously,
- 1:24this is itself constructed from our earlier life, the
- 1:28impact of our forebears and any family or social
- 1:32influences that help create the identity we consider to
- 1:36be ourselves. As an observational stage,
- 1:40however, the value comes when we eventually return
- 1:43to the larger act of life in the world, as we can
- 1:47begin to distinguish what we knew to be our own
- 1:50baseline from new energetic responses and effects that
- 1:54we begin to experience. This
- 1:57helps us to create a differential diagnosis and
- 2:01gain clarity about the mix of vibrations that is
- 2:04always occurring and how it impacts us and how it
- 2:09changes us. At the same time, we may be
- 2:13able to observe how our own characteristic vibrations
- 2:16go out and impact others in the world and change
- 2:20their responses. The mother observes, quote, are
- 2:25you able to know when you are with others what comes
- 2:29from you and what from the others, to what extent
- 2:32their way of being, their particular vibrations act
- 2:36upon you? You are not aware of this at
- 2:39all. You live in a kind of
- 2:42approximate consciousness, half awake, half asleep, in
- 2:47something very vague, where you have to grope like
- 2:50this in order to catch things. But
- 2:53do you have a precise, clear, exact notion of what
- 2:57goes on in you, why it goes on in you, and then
- 3:01this, the vibrations which come to you from outside
- 3:05and those which come from within you? And
- 3:09then again, what can come from others, changing all
- 3:13this, giving another orientation? You
- 3:16live in a kind of hazy fluidity, certain small
- 3:20things suddenly crystallize in your consciousness. You
- 3:24have just caught them for a moment and it is just
- 3:27clear enough like that as though there was a
- 3:29projector, just something passing on the screen and
- 3:34becoming clear for a second. The
- 3:36next minute, everything has become vague, imprecise, but
- 3:42you are not aware of this because you have not even
- 3:45asked yourself the question, because you live in this
- 3:48way, end quote. Reference, Shri Aurobindo and the
- 3:53mother, the hidden forces of life, chapter 3, hidden
- 3:58forces around, pages 66 to 67.
