- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi everybody, and welcome to the Yukon Football Coaches Show,
- 0:03Speaker 1: our last scheduled one of the season as coach more
- 0:06Speaker 1: than the Huskies get set for their season finale on
- 0:09Speaker 1: Saturday at UMass. And first of all, we're going to
- 0:12Speaker 1: look back a little bit at the Syracuse game in
- 0:14Speaker 1: his first segment only and Jim, I would dare say,
- 0:17Speaker 1: and I know some of the comments that you had
- 0:18Speaker 1: afterwards about Kyle McCord, but I would think this is
- 0:21Speaker 1: the best offensive team that you probably played in your
- 0:24Speaker 1: time here. You've seen some good ones, but just the
- 0:26Speaker 1: way Kyle was able to throw the football put your
- 0:29Speaker 1: guys in some tough spots early and throughout the game
- 0:32Speaker 1: for that matter, just made it tough. But you gave
- 0:34Speaker 1: yourselves a chance at the end, and that's all you
- 0:36Speaker 1: could ask for other than a dub.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, in a game like that, you have
- 0:42Speaker 2: to play and perform as a staff pretty well close
- 0:45Speaker 2: to perfect. And you know, Kyle's a really good football player.
- 0:49Speaker 1: You know.
- 0:49Speaker 2: After I said that, I thought, you know, we've actually
- 0:51Speaker 2: played JJ mccarth, he's pretty not good, and some others,
- 0:54Speaker 2: but I was just really impressed with the way Kyle
- 0:57Speaker 2: operated and have a lot of respect for him, you know,
- 1:02Speaker 2: and we had to be a little bit more exacting
- 1:04Speaker 2: and everything that we did, and we weren't. But our
- 1:07Speaker 2: guys fight and they will continue to fight and they
- 1:10Speaker 2: will not accept defeat. Like there's nobody that thought, well,
- 1:12Speaker 2: we played them close. You know, we don't have that
- 1:14Speaker 2: type of attitude. There was tremendous disappointment that we weren't
- 1:18Speaker 2: able to finish that game with a win. And that's
- 1:21Speaker 2: what you have to have permeating in your program, and
- 1:23Speaker 2: that's the only way you're gonna you're going to continue
- 1:26Speaker 2: to gain ground and eventually, you know, catch those teams
- 1:30Speaker 2: is by having that mindset, having that attitude. So you know,
- 1:35Speaker 2: that's that's what we've got to keep heading Jim.
- 1:37Speaker 1: The accuracy, you know, makes it an issue too, because
- 1:40Speaker 1: if you know the way they spread the field, it's
- 1:43Speaker 1: man coverage. If you're not taking a good angle as
- 1:45Speaker 1: a defensive back after catch, it becomes an issue. And
- 1:49Speaker 1: that seemed to be something that happened more so earlier
- 1:51Speaker 1: in the game in the first half than the second half.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And it's kind of probably hard to duplicate and practice
- 1:57Speaker 1: that accuracy.
- 1:58Speaker 2: It is, and it's hard to do complicate the speed
- 2:00Speaker 2: of the game and the end take and you know,
- 2:04Speaker 2: you're right, we you know you're going to give up
- 2:07Speaker 2: some catches, but you got to be able to get
- 2:09Speaker 2: him on the ground. And early in the game we
- 2:10Speaker 2: didn't get him on the ground, and that hurt us certainly.
- 2:13Speaker 2: So we just got to keep working at it, and
- 2:16Speaker 2: we will. And you know, our guys take it very
- 2:18Speaker 2: seriously and they never slept anything off. Accept responsibility. We
- 2:22Speaker 2: all do and and you know we have to learn
- 2:25Speaker 2: from it and get better, and I expect that we will.
- 2:28Speaker 1: The Orange truck early then they got the ball back,
- 2:30Speaker 1: thought they had another touchdown offensive pass interference in the
- 2:33Speaker 1: gates that then they miss a field goal. So on
- 2:35Speaker 1: your next drive, you're facing fourth and one at your
- 2:38Speaker 1: own twenty nine and you go for it and it
- 2:40Speaker 1: looks like a simple a gap run, good blocking and
- 2:42Speaker 1: Cam Edwards makes a play.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah, so you know, we're in a situation where it's
- 2:48Speaker 2: felt like we needed to do something to you know,
- 2:50Speaker 2: to make a statement. And Cam actually cut it back
- 2:55Speaker 2: and they would have an unblocked guy the way you
- 2:57Speaker 2: do that, and he took on the unblocked safety and
- 2:59Speaker 2: he beat him and kind of rolled out of there,
- 3:02Speaker 2: and you know, as Cam will do, he you know
- 3:03Speaker 2: he's going to keep moving his feet and he got
- 3:05Speaker 2: us seventy one yard touchdown, which gave us, you know,
- 3:09Speaker 2: the boost that we needed at that point in time.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Had we not gotten that, you know, they had a
- 3:13Speaker 2: chance with field position to put points up. But have
- 3:16Speaker 2: confidence in our defense to be able to do those things,
- 3:18Speaker 2: and confidence in our offensive line and our quarterback and
- 3:21Speaker 2: certainly our running backs be able to execute those plays,
- 3:23Speaker 2: and we did.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Adam had Cam on the pregame last week and they
- 3:28Speaker 1: talked about a barefoot routine that Cam has. Do you
- 3:32Speaker 1: know about this where I guess he goes out and
- 3:33Speaker 1: dura warmups, goes bare feet and just kinds to get
- 3:37Speaker 1: him so familiar with the.
- 3:39Speaker 2: I think they call that grounding. I know there are
- 3:41Speaker 2: people that really believe in that. I didn't know Cam
- 3:43Speaker 2: was one of those guys that did that. It just
- 3:45Speaker 2: I've read about it. You know, it's just kind of
- 3:47Speaker 2: feeling the earth and it's called grounding, And yeah, I mean,
- 3:53Speaker 2: I know there's a lot of players that do things
- 3:56Speaker 2: like that. I didn't know Cam was one of them,
- 3:57Speaker 2: but you know, it makes sense.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Of your other players that have quirky pregame rituals.
- 4:03Speaker 2: I don't love. I don't pay attention to that. Really,
- 4:05Speaker 2: I have my own rituals that are routines. I'm gonna
- 4:08Speaker 2: call them routines. I think that we're a very routine
- 4:12Speaker 2: oriented team. I encourage our guys to have a routine
- 4:17Speaker 2: to get themselves mentally, emotionally and physically prepared for kickoff
- 4:20Speaker 2: every week, something that they follow as closely as they
- 4:23Speaker 2: can week in and week out. I think that that's
- 4:26Speaker 2: important to performing at a high level. And I'm sure
- 4:29Speaker 2: that they all have something that you know, they're able
- 4:32Speaker 2: to kind of hang their hat on that gets them
- 4:34Speaker 2: in the right frame of mind. So we encourage it.
- 4:37Speaker 2: We talk about it, but I don't necessarily go around
- 4:39Speaker 2: and ask them what it is.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure, you're down twenty one to seven. Last
- 4:44Speaker 1: driver of the first half. Offense is spunter a little bit.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Joe wasn't on target on some plays. But then you
- 4:51Speaker 1: need somebody to step up, and Skyler Bell certainly did
- 4:54Speaker 1: that with a beautiful catch down the left sideline for
- 4:57Speaker 1: thirty yards, makes another big one on third down. This
- 5:00Speaker 1: up the touchdown. But sometimes it's all you.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Need, you know, right, it's we were sputtering. You know,
- 5:07Speaker 2: we were off a little bit. We weren't running as
- 5:08Speaker 2: well as as we needed to, we weren't converting in
- 5:11Speaker 2: the past game making third downs, and then it came
- 5:15Speaker 2: to that drive you're talking about, and all of a sudden,
- 5:17Speaker 2: you know, Skyler makes Joe throws it up there, Skyler
- 5:20Speaker 2: makes a heck of a catch and he comes back
- 5:22Speaker 2: the next play and he kind of bobbles up he
- 5:23Speaker 2: catches it, and you know, I think that gives everyone confidence.
- 5:26Speaker 2: It certainly gives the quarterback confidence you can just put
- 5:29Speaker 2: it near you and you're gonna get it, which we've
- 5:30Speaker 2: seen out of all our receivers this year. But I
- 5:34Speaker 2: had a lot of I was encouraged by the way
- 5:38Speaker 2: Joe handled himself in that game. You know, when we
- 5:41Speaker 2: needed to make a play at the end of the
- 5:43Speaker 2: first half, when we needed to make a play go
- 5:45Speaker 2: down at the end of the game and you know,
- 5:47Speaker 2: get ourselves back in contention, he was at his best
- 5:50Speaker 2: and his receivers were there for him and we made plays.
- 5:53Speaker 2: And so we have to be able to build on that,
- 5:55Speaker 2: and that's a focus this week.
- 5:58Speaker 1: You know, all the touchdown the hands and on that
- 6:00Speaker 1: drive that was a run pass option played correct. You
- 6:03Speaker 1: had two guys in the backfield. I thought Joe ran
- 6:05Speaker 1: that pretty well.
- 6:06Speaker 2: He did. You know, there's keys that he has to
- 6:08Speaker 2: read and if they played a certain way, you run it.
- 6:11Speaker 2: If they played another way, you throw it. And you
- 6:13Speaker 2: know you have to trust your quarterbacks going to read
- 6:15Speaker 2: it right and make a play. And he did.
- 6:17Speaker 1: So.
- 6:18Speaker 2: You know, that's really pretty common in college football. A
- 6:20Speaker 2: lot of people, you know, the run pat rpo type
- 6:22Speaker 2: of stuff they do. Everyone does it different ways, but
- 6:24Speaker 2: you're seeing it every week. It puts a lot of
- 6:27Speaker 2: stress on a defense. I know defensively for us, some
- 6:30Speaker 2: we have to work on constantly and it's, you know,
- 6:33Speaker 2: something that can be really effective if if operated at
- 6:38Speaker 2: the you know, in the right way offensively.
- 6:41Speaker 1: All right, Just to start up things here on the
- 6:42Speaker 1: Yukon Football Coaches Show. Later we'll have both number sevens
- 6:45Speaker 1: on Malakai MacLean and mel Brown Junior more with Jim
- 6:48Speaker 1: in just a moment here on the Yukon Sports Network Fromlearfield.
