- 1:27But now it's time for today's episode of Crime and Peter Chambers. The
- 1:32original aired eight August twenty fourth of nineteen fifty four, and the title The
- 1:37Stockbroker's Daughter, Right, I'm Peter Chamber created by Henry Kine, transcribed and
- 2:05starring as Peter Chambers Dane Pluck. You're a private eye. That's your business.
- 2:15Anything else, that's the lapse. It's been raining cats and dogs and
- 2:30assorted animals for three long, wet, miserable days. Happens and today it
- 2:37clears. So you're heading for the polar grounds and a view of your beloved
- 2:40giants. But first you call the office and there's a message, and mister
- 2:45Winston Carr wants to see you at his Park Avenue apartment. So business is
- 2:50business, Winston Car. He's got enough loot to run his own little private
- 2:54Marshall Plan Winston Car stockbroker Thelus. You kiss off the giants, you wish
- 3:00him luck, and you're a special young man, Willie Mays. And then
- 3:05you've got your finger on the door buzzer of mister Carr's Cloud High Penthouse apartment.
- 3:13Chambers, Pewter Chambers. That's right, sir, answered the door myself.
- 3:16Servants stay off, you'll pardon my attire. He's a massive man and
- 3:23a handsome one, maybe sixty, with white hair and a white mustache,
- 3:27but he's got a youthful twinkle in his eye. He's dressed in an ancient
- 3:30bathrobe, and he leads you through to a room that's half bedroom, half
- 3:34den, and then he plumps out in a soft bed, red Hurt Chambers
- 3:38bed kicker. It's been aching up. I've been catering to it. Haven't
- 3:42been out of the apartment all day, been laying about pampering myself. Haven't
- 3:46even changed my suit. See hanging there, that's the suit I was wearing
- 3:51yesterday. That's nice, that's nice. What's that got to do with me?
- 3:55There's an envelope there in that suit. I want you to deliver it,
- 4:00and for that you need a private Richard, Private Richard. That's a
- 4:04cute dam never heard it before. Private Richard, private eye, confidential agent.
- 4:09All adds up for the same thing, usually a patsy. You're rather
- 4:13acidical one, don't you, sir? No, But maybe I'm in a
- 4:15bad humor. I was looking forward to seeing the Giants this afternoon. Giant's
- 4:18my favorite ball club. I'm quite a fan. Curtain to resist business,
- 4:25could you, mister Jaiors? Matter of fact, I couldn't. Can you
- 4:29miss the car? A business, young man, is business, and let's
- 4:32get to it right now. Since you've made a sacrifice and coming here,
- 4:38your fee is hereby doubled And how much was it single? One hundred dollars?
- 4:43Now two hundred for what mister car for delivering an envelope? Delivery and
- 4:47envelope sort of glorified message. Boy, wouldn't you say? Well, it's
- 4:53important and valuable and your reputation is such that I know I can trust you
- 4:58with it. And whom do I deliver it? To? Henry Martel?
- 5:00It is a part of ten to twenty Central Park West. You should be
- 5:03waiting for it. I promised it for this afternoon. Am I to get
- 5:08a receipt? Oh? No, no, no receipt necessary. You see,
- 5:12mister Martel is about to be engaged to my daughter daughter, my daughter
- 5:16Loretta, only child, very dear to me, only real thing dear to
- 5:21me since my good wife died. Anyway, mister Martell is going into business,
- 5:28and I'm sort of helping him with the contents of that envelope. I'm
- 5:34not quite up to delivering it myself today. So how came at the car?
- 5:39I'm to deliver an envelope in the inside jacket pocket, mister Chambers.
- 5:44Yep, right there, that's it. That's it, and from my wallet.
- 5:47Please help yourself to two hundred dollars, so out of a clean,
- 6:02white, unwrinkled palm beach suit, you take the envelope your fee, and
- 6:08you wave bye bye to Winston Car And then you're out in the sunshine and
- 6:12up to Central Park West, and once more you're poking your finger at a
- 6:15doorbell, this one over an engraved card, mister Henry Martell. Well,
- 6:26well, well it just wouldn't be legitimate if you didn't show up with it.
- 6:30Had you've never seen Henry Martell. But you know it isn't he who's
- 6:33answered the door, because the guy in the doorway is an old friend and
- 6:36a good one. Detective Lieutenant Louis Parker, Homicide, New York City Police.
- 6:42Like I said, without you, my case wouldn't be complete. What
- 6:45kind of a case, Louis murder? My friend? Who's murdered my friend?
- 6:47Henry Martel? Mar tell you're not kidding me, are you? Louis
- 6:54with murder? You don't kid Come on in, sir, cops working over
- 7:02a cadaver. There's hardly any blood on him. He must have been a
- 7:08good looking lad, tall with dark wavy hair and high cheek bones. Cops
- 7:14are cops, and a cadaver is a cadaver. But there's one incongruous note
- 7:17in the room. A sobbing blonde standing near the window, teetering like a
- 7:21drunk on a tight rope. Pete Yellowie, you happen to know the dame?
- 7:28No I wish says she's a Larta Car says she's the daughter of that
- 7:31mogul Winston came retta car. Did she kill him? She says she didn't.
- 7:39Haven't questioned her closely yet. You can see she's standing there like she's
- 7:43gonna faint. I'm giving her a little time to settle down. How did
- 7:46he get it? Bullets in this gun right here, no prints on it.
- 7:53We got the call from the girl this Loretta claim she dropped in on
- 7:56him for cocktails something. The door was opened, found him like that gun
- 8:00on the floor. Is it possible that a whist suicide? No? No,
- 8:05gun was twenty feet away from it. Guy doesn't shoot himself and then
- 8:09die, then throw the gun away and it looks like my boys are finished.
- 8:13Let me get them out of here. Okay, fellas, I'll see
- 8:15you downtown and the body goes to I'll talk to you after the autopsy.
- 8:18Doctor Now miss Carr, just a few short questions. Yes, yes,
- 8:30lieutenant, Oh Loretta Carr, this is uh, it's Peter Chambers. How
- 8:35do you do, miss Carl? How do you do? Miss Carr?
- 8:37We know all the details of your finding him calling the thing into us.
- 8:41Now what were you doing here? I mean, how well did you know
- 8:45him? I knew Henry mister Martell for the for the past sixt month.
- 8:52We were going to be engaged to be marriage. I can verify that,
- 8:56Louis. I just wait your turn, and I'm saving you for later.
- 9:00Okay, mis Kan How old are you twenty? How old was mister Martell?
- 9:07Thirty five? Did you win? You have your parents consent to this
- 9:11prospective engagement? Just one parent, sir, my my father? Did you
- 9:16have his consent? At first? At first he objected, but then he
- 9:22came around my way of thinking, And what were his objections? At first?
- 9:28Mister Martel was too old for me, that he wasn't exactly the type
- 9:33of person that he'd imagined I'd fall in love with. Oh, you know
- 9:37how fathers are. Yeah, but slowly, slowly, I want him over.
- 9:43And then we had his consent. I see, how'd you meet mister
- 9:46Martell I was introduced to him in a cocktail party. Okay, mis car,
- 9:52that about says it for now. You you can go home, but
- 9:54please be available. Huh, thank you, lieutenant. And now, Peter
- 10:03Pan, what the heck are you doing here? Anyway? You'll bring him
- 10:16up to date fast. He gives you full concentration, nodding his head up
- 10:20and down like a small boy watching a bouncing act on the trampoline. And
- 10:24then uh huh mm hmm. Okay, let's have it. Uh have what,
- 10:33lieutenant? You know what? The envelope? Envelope? Lieutenant, Come
- 10:37on, come on, there's a murder case. I'm working. I've seen
- 10:39a game of badminton yet these modern cops. All right, Lieutenant, the
- 10:45envelope naughty, naughty, you're opening other people's mail. Pete, you know
- 10:56what's in this loves sona by William Shakespeare Wonder one hundred thousand bananas, one
- 11:01hundred thousand dollars bills, cash money. He certainly did approve of his perspective,
- 11:07son in law, didn't he? Louis, all right, you've done
- 11:09your bit, You've delivered your envelope. At least he'll take possessions for the
- 11:13time being. I'll go up to the old man personally explain the situation.
- 11:16What do I do? I mean, do you go to a ball game
- 11:18or something too late for the ball game? Oh? That will he may?
- 11:20Well? Then go to your office and sit and pray. Maybe business
- 11:24will fall in. Business didn't fall in. It wafted across the wires of
- 11:35Alexander Bell's invention. Oh is that Dona Michi? Hello, I want you
- 11:45to come down here right away. He wants me to come where? And
- 11:46why me? Oh that? Hey? I'd be more, don't you know?
- 11:50My boys, you're supposed to be a private eye. I am a
- 11:54private eye. I'm not a private ear. What's on your leged mind?
- 11:56I want you to come down here? Where's here my offer? What's the
- 12:00matter, Herbie prob What else I call on you? It an'tthing you should
- 12:03teach me to mumble. I'll come on, get on your horse. You
- 12:15get on your horse, and you're traveling again. Herbie Moss big shot,
- 12:20book makers, bookmaker, commission brokers. They call him Herbie Moss, angle
- 12:24guy from way back. Slippery is a lemon pitt and olive oil. His
- 12:28office is a fancy spread on Lower Broadway, Well the old Shamas Hansom has
- 12:33ever come in? Come in? You're gonna in yourself, uncle change Herbie
- 12:37Moss about forty and not bad looking and dressed, of course, in the
- 12:41latest of an tailoring. Okay, I come right to the point. And
- 12:46what's the point? Where is your fee? Five hundred clams, which I
- 12:50hand over like so well, thank you, Herbie, You've made your first
- 12:54point. Now what ever hear of Mattel? Henry Mattel? What about him?
- 13:03He got cooled this afternoon, That's what about him? What I got
- 13:05to do with you? Nothing, not a thing except it's my gun.
- 13:07He happens to get cooled with nobody else's pell my gun, I be Moss.
- 13:13Cops know about this. They trace it to me quick and they yank
- 13:16me in. So what are you doing out? My lawyer gets me out.
- 13:20One of them rids abeas maybe is what do I know? I'm out?
- 13:22But I ain't the clear. That's your job to put me in the
- 13:26clear. Your No, I did not kill him, you know him this,
- 13:33Henry Mattel. No, I never hired a bomb in my life,
- 13:37herb me, my boy. Just for the record, if I find that
- 13:41you are mixed up in this, I turn you in any way, and
- 13:45you're stuck with the five hundred dollar things. I am mixed up with nothing.
- 13:48I tell you, all right, I leant that heated to a day
- 13:50when about six months ago. Who's it all? Doll is right? Don't
- 13:56trip over that. That's dynamite joy Sto a model, tall, dark and
- 14:01with a shape. Oh brother, all right, what's the address. It's
- 14:05in the phone book. And let me tell you I've seen them all big
- 14:07and small, but this is Joyce Store. Next up, Joyce Dorene.
- 14:22It's a terrace apartment on Madison Avenue. And the good miss Doreen must have
- 14:28been taking the sun on the terrace because she opens the door for you wearing
- 14:31high heeled white shoes, white swimming briefs, a white bandana, and that's
- 14:37all. That is all. I'm glad you've called me first in to chase
- 14:43me. I was going to go out, but instead I reserve this time
- 14:48for you when you said it was urgent. Oh the Joyce Dorene. You
- 14:56take black eyes, black hair, red lips, and then you dream up
- 14:58a lush f and you put it on the longest shapelest legs you've ever seen.
- 15:03And there you have it. Joyce Doyne, Will you tell me what
- 15:07this is all about, mister Chambers. You tell her you're doing a lot
- 15:11of stirring, a lot of gasping, But in between gasps, you tell
- 15:15her, I want to thank you, mister Chambers, for coming to me
- 15:18so quickly. Oh what else could I do? Miss Doreen? Her Red
- 15:22Morse claims that gun was here. Please don't know about that yet, but
- 15:26sooner or later they will. And then then, lady, you'll be all
- 15:30jammed up. Oh but I'm sure there's some mistake. Why because that gun's
- 15:35been an at bureau drawer since her blended to me. I never even touched
- 15:39it. Let me show you. Oh it's gone, mister Chambers. Mister
- 15:46Chambers, you must help me now. I would like to retain you.
- 15:48I'll pay you a fee if you're just help. Pees have just been pouring
- 15:52down. I mean like hailstones for you, honey for you. It's for
- 15:54free. But you've got to answer a couple of questions, and you got
- 15:58to answer them truthfully. Oh yes, yes, whatever you say. First,
- 16:02how well do you know this Herbie Moss? Oh as well as I
- 16:04know any other man. He was attentive to me period? And were you
- 16:11attentive to him? Period? Not more so than to anyone else. I
- 16:17have many male friends, but there's never been anyone special. Not yet?
- 16:23H No, not yet? Uh? Do you know Henry Mattel? Ah?
- 16:33Yes? Was he attentive to very? Did Herbie Mass know Henry Mattel?
- 16:40Yes? He did? He did? Huh? Why is there something
- 16:44wrong with that? No? No, nothing else. Was Herbie Moss fond
- 16:49of Henry Mattel? He hated him? You know why? Well? I?
- 16:56Uh? Well, in all modesty, I come on, mister Ring,
- 17:00you can tell me well, Herbie was jealous of Henry. In fact,
- 17:06Herbin I terminated our friendship because of this crazy jealousy of Henry Marte.
- 17:11Did you happen to know that Martell? Well, that he had a girlfriend
- 17:15who he was going to be engaged? I heard that he'd been running around
- 17:18with some little girl. And were you jealous? Mister Ring? Me me
- 17:29jealous? I look, mister Jambers, as I've told you, I have
- 17:32many male friends, young and old, flip and distinguished, and as far
- 17:37as I'm concerned, you can lump them alltogether. Faithfully, you promised to
- 17:48keep her abreast of events, and then you make tracks for Parker's office to
- 17:52sort of catch up on events yourself. Beat my boy. That's the sumon
- 17:56total of it. Herbie Morris is our number one suspect, but we just
- 18:00don't have enough to hold. What about this Henry Martel? But what about
- 18:03it? What kind of a guy? He's a fringe guy, man about
- 18:07town, strictly a phony. I lived by the wits guy, never rested,
- 18:10never convicted. He had a few brushes with the Lord the last time
- 18:15when he bolted a private eye outed a private eye who Barry Miller a couple
- 18:21of months ago when you were on the West coast, claimed the eye was
- 18:22tailing him, annoying him. Anything else, No, Larie, you ever
- 18:26hear Joyce doren Am I supposed to? I don't know yet. Well find
- 18:33out for me sometime, Lieutenant. I intend to do just that. Ah.
- 18:38It starts already. It begins to make with the Dame. You beat
- 18:53around town, digging up dirt on Henry Martel, and then you start hiking
- 18:57for Joyce Doreen's place. You'd like to give her apartment a quick look see,
- 19:03and you wonder how you can make it so it gets made for you.
- 19:07You're outside her door and you can hear the finish of an argument inside,
- 19:11and I say, you use my gun to knock him off, and
- 19:14like that you put me in the spot. I'd like to put your right
- 19:15square on at your well, I would not. Herbie comes tearing out and
- 19:23goes past you without even a friendly How do you do? New? Mosey
- 19:29in and there's miss Doreen, laid out, neat and comfortable. She'll come
- 19:33to in time, but this isn't the time. You give the apartment a
- 19:37quick frisk, and you come up with guess what a little older dress book?
- 19:44Gal wouldn't be a gallop without a little older dress book. You look
- 19:48through it and bang, your case opens up and unpols for you. You
- 19:52get out of there and you call Parker and you're told that Parker is at
- 19:56the cars place. So that's your next stup. Winston cars in bed and
- 20:00park is near talking to him. Loretti let you in and then went away,
- 20:04and Parker is a little pee you again? What are you doing here?
- 20:08I'm wrapping up your case for you. Louis like, how like giving
- 20:11you the murderer? And who wouldn't be mister chumbers. You, mister Winston
- 20:18Car, easy, pet boy, you know what you're doing. I know
- 20:22what I'm doing all right now. How do you want louis right side up
- 20:25or wrong side under? Anyway it alls? Does it make sense? I'll
- 20:27do it straight first, and then I'll take the evidence onto it any way
- 20:30you like to take it. Winston Carr with an only daughter apple of his
- 20:34eye. She latches onto a phony. Carr tries to talk her out.
- 20:41She won't be talking. Carr puts a private eye on him and gets convinced
- 20:44that Martella is a phony private eye. Huh, Barry Miller, how could
- 20:48you people know whyet? Mister Carr? Let him talk now. Car pretends
- 20:52he okays the engagement of his daughter, but he sounds out Martella. Martella
- 20:56wants a hundred gees as an outflight, but Car is a businessman, so
- 21:03he goes there and he shoots him. How am I doing as a car?
- 21:07Very well? Young man? Too well? I I can't fight this.
- 21:15I'm too old and sick, but I won't knuckle on the river.
- 21:19It's evidence that convict. All you want evidence? All right? Listen,
- 21:25here's a business man, Laurie that says he's going to help his perspective son
- 21:26in law in business. Now, how would he do it? Not by
- 21:30one hundred thousand dollars in cash, of course, not it will be a
- 21:33check or nothing. Well, and why it's that cover up? After he
- 21:37knocked him off? He used me to deliver one hundred geees to Martell,
- 21:41supposed to show that he had affection to the guy. You know, I
- 21:45used me as a delivery boy, strictly as a cover up. Bed all
- 21:48day, he says, he didn't even change out of yesterday's suit. We'll
- 21:52take a look about tenant. There's a suit hanging there. Okay, I'm
- 21:56looking palm beat suit, clean white, unwrinkled. It's been worn, but
- 22:02it wasn't worn yesterday. It was worn today. How do you know?
- 22:07Because there was born cats and dogs yesterday, and if he wore it in
- 22:11that reign, it wouldn't be clean, white and unwrinkled. All right?
- 22:14Enough? What about the gun? Look, if Herbie Moss he was that
- 22:15gun, you think it'd be crazy enough to leave it there? Where did
- 22:18this guy get? Stole it? Out of a bureau drawing a bureau drawer
- 22:22doll by name Joyce Dorine Herbie gave her the gun, and Car here lifted
- 22:29it from her, and Vincent well, he has a little old addressed book.
- 22:33Louis belongs to Joyce Dorine and under the initial see guess whose name is
- 22:40their biggest life? Al Right, enough enough, So after car gets put
- 22:53on ice, surrounded by high priced lawyers, and after you have made your
- 22:57report to Herbie Moss, you wend your way to Miss Doreen's apartment and you
- 23:03tell her she's out of a mess. You're about to give her details when
- 23:08oh no, no, mister Chambers, not so fast. Let's do it
- 23:14nice to me. You just sit down while I build a hyball too highballs,
- 23:21too nice, long legendy. H Now just sit and wait. Oh
- 23:30Joyce, I didn't say a thing, Honey. I'm just sitting and waiting.
- 24:06And there you've had. Crime and Peter Chambers. Dane Clark was starred
- 24:19as Peter Chambers. Crime and Peter Chambers Transcribed was created and written by Henry
- 24:26Kane. Others in the cast were Bill Zuckert Heard as Lieutenant Parker, Leslie
- 24:30Wood as Joyce, and Roger de Covin as Winston Carr. It was directed
- 24:36by Fred Wade. This Is Fred Collins inviting you to tune in next week,
- 24:38same time, same station for Dane Clark in Crime and Peter Chambers.
- 25:45This is the United States Armed Forces Radio and Television Services except when so super
- 26:26except s s welcome back. Well, I have to admit having read the
- 27:12books, or at least one of them. It's hard to believe Pete Chambers
- 27:17taking a two hundred dollars job or responding to it with anything other than a
- 27:21laugh. Now that's not business, that's for laughs, just with the high
- 27:25sort of fees that he commands at any rate. We turn to some listener
- 27:30comments and feedback. Stewart emails in and he says, thank you your efforts
- 27:36have enhanced my old time radio listening experience. When I catch up to where
- 27:41you are and listen to other apps, I miss your insigns. Well,
- 27:45thanks so much, definitely to appreciate your comments and glad we're be able to
- 27:49provide some value. And then we also have this comment from Merrily, I
- 27:57keep up the good work, love the show, well, thanks so much.
- 28:00And then we have a comment from Laurie on Crime and Peter Chambers,
- 28:06who says I find in myself enjoying Peter Chambers more and more each week.
- 28:11Thanks for bringing him to my notice. Do you happen to know what piece
- 28:17of music it is that the af RTS put in replacement of the in commercials
- 28:23each week? I find myself humming it all day. I listen every single
- 28:27week. Well, thanks so much, Laurie. Regarding the music, I
- 28:32honestly don't know any a stupe music lovers in the audience might be able to
- 28:40answer better than I on that. And I've enjoyed Peter Chambers as well.
- 28:47I actually did not listen to the whole series for playing it, and I've
- 28:52been pleased at the quality. I have to admit that this was a series
- 28:56that I thought was okay, But I've had about two different series where I
- 29:02listened to a few shows, thought they were okay, but over the long
- 29:06haul really weren't all that good. I'm very pleased that Crime and Peter Chambers
- 29:11definitely I didn't have that problem. It's been nice to listen to and it
- 29:17is a shame that we're coming to an end. We have two more episodes
- 29:22to go after this week, and I'll definitely miss it. Dane Clark definitely
- 29:26turning a good performance in Bill Zuckert, the Greatest, Louis Parker, and
- 29:30the Music's great Seriously, if anyone knows, I'd love to hear what it
- 29:36was. All right, Well, that will do it for today. We
- 29:38will be back tomorrow with the adventures of Philip Marlowe, and then join us
- 29:44back here again next Tuesday for another episode of Crime and Peter Chambers. In
- 29:48the meantime, sender comments to Box thirteen at Great Attractives dot net. Follow
