Transcript
- 0:25Day 12, walking between 10 and 15 kilometres today, so another short day.
- 0:32Two short days in a row to allow ourselves to recover.
- 0:36Today, walking from Legroño to Navarrete.
- 0:41Interesting walk out of Legroño.
- 0:44It's like a walking path boulevard, which just spanned for kilometres out of the town.
- 0:54And it seemed to be the place to go for a morning walk.
- 0:58So we're all kitted up with our backpacks and our walking sticks and all sorts of things.
- 1:06It seems to be locals of La Grunia are all out for their morning walk.
- 1:11We didn't rush out the door this morning. In fact, by the time we left,
- 1:16I think it must have been about 9.30,
- 1:19very late for pilgrims to be getting on the path, but it is a short day,
- 1:24and it was a cold morning, and I hadn't had a coffee, so then,
- 1:29stopped off at one of the last cafe bars before we left the town for an espresso.
- 1:37Different coffee culture here than there is in Australia.
- 1:42You know, the rise of the takeaway coffee and takeaway coffee cup is not in existence here.
- 1:50So you either sit down have a coffee and talk, or stand at the bar and have your coffee.
- 1:59So definitely a different coffee culture than the takeaway coffee cup culture.
- 2:04On the walk out of La Grunio, like I said, there's a long boulevard. Gracias.
- 2:11A long boulevard where everyone seems to be up for their morning walk,
- 2:14that stretch for kilometres, and then went into a nature reserve.
- 2:20So essentially, I think we just did almost like a big lap of a,
- 2:24what was a dam, which now is a lake.
- 2:29Lots of wildlife there, wildlife that's used to people.
- 2:35You know, we stopped just for a breather and suddenly some big ducks came waddling
- 2:41out of the lake directly up to us and started wagging their tails,
- 2:46wanting whatever we had.
- 2:49They weren't so interested in the fruit, the mandarins or the clementines.
- 2:54They were interested in the biscuits, though.
- 2:56These ducks know the good stuff. They were Biscoff biscuits.
- 3:00Hard to go past Biscoff with the chocolate in between them.
- 3:04And then also the squirrels, tiny squirrels, very brave and bold,
- 3:10very used to humans, coming right up, fronting up to you, standing up,
- 3:15almost to say, right, what have you got for me?
- 3:18Definitely not shy and the
- 3:21fish we crossed this tiny little tiny little
- 3:25timber bridge in this reserve and there
- 3:29were i kid you not hundreds hundreds
- 3:32of these large fish all gathered
- 3:37near the bridge waiting for people
- 3:40to come past and to feed them these
- 3:43fish they had no space there was just fish on top of fish on top of fish and
- 3:47there were hundreds of them huge have no idea what type of fish they were they
- 3:51did have some sort of catfish type mouth with the whiskers they were very large
- 3:57big scales you might be able to hear in the background,
- 4:02after leaving the nature reserve we've climbed another hill and now we're walking
- 4:06parallel with the highway there's
- 4:09apologies for the vehicle noise in the background if it's coming through.
- 4:15Overcast day i love these overcast days for walking cool temperatures
- 4:18overcast but today there is a little bit
- 4:21of spitting rain made the decision not to
- 4:23put the wet weather gear on just suffocates you so rolling the dice it will
- 4:30start raining i'll put it on at about five kilometers i think to go until we
- 4:35get to navaret i think we've got an apartment and book their opportunity to spread out, rest up.
- 4:41And then the days start to build again.
- 4:45At day 12, this really starts to feel like it is our new normal,
- 4:50our new routine of waking up early. Well, not too early, but early enough.
- 4:55Getting yourself packed and getting out on the road and getting the kilometers
- 5:00done, rolling into town.
- 5:03We always seem to arrive during siesta.
- 5:06So then once siesta's done,
- 5:09getting out and finding whatever we can, down to sleep and repeat the process
- 5:14all over again it's quite nice class quite hip not hypnotic repetitive anyway navaret here we come.
- 5:25Well, it's a cold evening here in Navarrete. We arrived early afternoon, actually quite early.
- 5:31When we arrived, we found a bar that was opened and enjoyed another range of pinchos.
- 5:38They were fantastic. There was asparagus, tomato, mushrooms.
- 5:43The mushrooms were good, really, really good.
- 5:46And a few other types that we had there. The pinchos were excellent.
- 5:51We've got a nice apartment here, very close to the church.
- 5:55Now, this church, Navarrete's a fairly small town,
- 5:59a town that you think's got some wealth, but this church went in through big
- 6:04doors, big wooden doors, into a big stone church and turned right just as you
- 6:09come in, and I have never,
- 6:11ever seen so much gold.
- 6:14The altar is adorned with gold on the walls, all different significant scenes
- 6:23out of Scripture portrayed behind the altar.
- 6:26It's very dark, but put a euro into a particular slot, which my son did,
- 6:32and then the gold was just lit up, spectacular.
- 6:38And then all the way around the church was so many significant images, statues.
- 6:49Things like Stations of the Cross and a whole other range of things there.
- 6:53Big organ as well, the lectionary where you would read from,
- 7:01you know, up a flight of stairs.
- 7:04So you're standing up over the congregation when reading.
- 7:09Like this is a very beautiful, significant church.
- 7:15Very, very spectacular. Tomorrow, kilometres start to pick up again.
- 7:19And it's been a good two days of less kilometres for us to recharge,
- 7:26regenerate and ready to go again.
