- 1:26Thanks, happy to be here. So happy that you were here,
- 1:28Mary. Podcast extraordinaire, real
- 1:32life friend from work. That's our organ password.
- 1:36They can happen. Real life friends can come from.
- 1:37Work, they can come from work and and we did that.
- 1:41So proud of us. Honestly, Bob, Oh my God, same.
- 1:43Truly the first time that we hung out, I was like, this chick
- 1:46rules. Ditto.
- 1:50How the heck are ya? Doing pretty good.
- 1:52Doing pretty good. Awesome, love that.
- 1:54Tell me, how about yourself? You know what?
- 1:56I'm doing pretty good too. I I'm very made a really good
- 2:01tofu bon me yesterday. Oh my gosh, yeah, it was really
- 2:05good. And I'm kind of riding on that
- 2:07high. Dang I have not been recently
- 2:10made a really good tofu bon me maybe ever but a good friend of
- 2:15mine that I like grew up with has kind of started making these
- 2:18really cool cooking videos and she just posted one where she
- 2:22made a dank looking steak sandwich that was like had IA
- 2:28homemade aioli on it had like a chimichurri sauce.
- 2:30On it. Oh, I love chimichurri.
- 2:32And just watching it, I felt as though I had that sandwich by
- 2:34extension. That's incredible.
- 2:36You made a tofu on me and I watched someone eat a steak
- 2:40sandwich and we might be riding the same high.
- 2:42I really do think that we are. Because for you, it's like, not
- 2:45only did you watch her make it, you ate it theoretically.
- 2:52Theoretically in an abstract way.
- 2:54So I think that's beautiful. Thank you.
- 2:56Yeah. You're welcome.
- 2:57I did not record myself preparing this tofu on me and.
- 3:02And thank God. For that, because you don't have
- 3:04to. Because that's not my lane.
- 3:06That is not my lane. I wish it was.
- 3:08I think that'd be really, really cool.
- 3:10I could be like Molly Boss. I love her.
- 3:14Molly Bond Me no. Molly, Bond, me.
- 3:16That's actually where I thought you were going.
- 3:18I was like, no Molly bonds better.
- 3:19Direction yeah yeah yeah, better direction She's talking about a
- 3:21real person. But if you are Molly Bond me
- 3:25love and light to you. OK, today we're talking about
- 3:28stuck in the Suburbs, kind of a lesser known Disney Channel
- 3:35original movie. Or maybe not lesser known, but
- 3:37just like less popular. Yeah, I, I have to say I, I
- 3:40realized that mostly in like kind of Googling and searching
- 3:44for some lore around this movie. It looms very large in my
- 3:47imagination. Love that.
- 3:50And I don't really know what it. I thought it was a fantastic and
- 3:53fun. Film.
- 3:54Oh my gosh, yeah. We got to say right off the top.
- 3:56So fun. A blast.
- 3:57Yeah, yeah. And like honestly it it follows
- 4:00a lot of tropes that are easy obvious.
- 4:04Tropes. But I felt like the message,
- 4:07there was some messaging of like, stick it to the man,
- 4:10support your mom, who has cool civic engagement.
- 4:13Like, absolutely. Like this is kind of a hip
- 4:16movie. Yeah, it it's playing as
- 4:18something more simplistic, but there's there's some undertones.
- 4:22I think that there is a lot more depth than what meets the eye.
- 4:25It's kind of this movie is sort of an iceberg.
- 4:27Yeah, I got to say, there's a lot more going on under the
- 4:30surface in this 80 minute movie. Yeah, it goes quick.
- 4:34Flew by. It's like only 20 minutes longer
- 4:38than an episode of The Pit, a show that I am enjoying very
- 4:41much. I have not seen the pit.
- 4:42All right, well, maybe I've. Heard fantastic things.
- 4:44I really got to get on that. My God, it is so, so good the
- 4:49other day. So Sunday was Hunter's birthday
- 4:53and he's like one of those people that's like, I don't like
- 4:55to make a big deal out of my birthday.
- 4:56Oh, yeah, I think I told you that.
- 4:57I was like, it's so annoying. I don't know what to do.
- 4:59Make a big deal. Like I want to make a big deal
- 5:02on your birthday. And he's like, oh, no, I don't
- 5:05want to be perceived. So even if he if, when, when he
- 5:08learns that I've even mentioned his name on the podcast, he's
- 5:11going to be like, Oh my God, I've been perceived.
- 5:13I should be perceived. Oh my God, that's so
- 5:15embarrassing. But it was his birthday on
- 5:18Sunday, and we all he wanted to do was continue watching The Pit
- 5:23because we just started it like we had started like just a few
- 5:25days before. And he was like, yeah, I'd
- 5:27really love to watch The Pit. We finished like up to the most
- 5:31recent episode and it was like, honestly, it was tragic that we
- 5:35had no more to watch because it was like, OK, well, now we're
- 5:38all caught up. Now we have to wait a week for
- 5:42the episode to come out just like everybody else.
- 5:45And he was like, this is really not fair, 'cause this is my
- 5:47birthday and I want to know what happened to that guy Louis, you
- 5:50know? Well, you find out soon enough.
- 5:52You know what? Yeah, I'm gonna.
- 5:54We're gonna find out soon enough that.
- 5:55Is how TV works. I suppose that.
- 5:57Is how TV works. That is how you know HBO works.
- 6:02And I do really, I really support weekly television.
- 6:08You know, I really like when they break it up week to week
- 6:11'cause then we have something to talk about with people all week.
- 6:13Except for you, Mary, because you haven't seen.
- 6:15It, I know, but Molly, I will say I feel better about not
- 6:18having watched it, knowing now that you only recently started
- 6:22it. I feel that makes me feel less
- 6:24behind than maybe I deserve to feel.
- 6:26That's huge and that's huge. Thank you.
- 6:29Oh. My God, you're so welcome.
- 6:30Love and light to you. Shout out to all of my friends
- 6:33who had recommended The Pit. And shout out to the Golden
- 6:36Globes and the Emmys for giving a bunch of awards to that show.
- 6:40Reinforce show. Yeah, this little known show,
- 6:42The Pit. But seriously, go watch it.
- 6:46Yeah, OK, anyway, so an episode of The Pit standard 60 minutes.
- 6:51This was only a little bit more than a minutes longer.
- 6:53Yeah, 20 minutes longer, if that.
- 6:57In the beginning, we start with this, like, teen magazine
- 7:01montage. Oh, wait, wait, wait.
- 7:03Before we even get. Into it, Yeah.
- 7:04Wait, I was gonna say. We gotta rewind.
- 7:08You were saying that this held a very special place in your
- 7:12upbringing. Yeah, I, I don't really, I don't
- 7:15know that there's much more I can tell you on that because I
- 7:18don't really know why. But I do know that when we were
- 7:21kicking around ideas for movies to watch and Stuck in the
- 7:24Suburbs was one listed, I was like, oh, bring me back like it.
- 7:30And I will also say there were moments in this movie that I
- 7:34didn't I couldn't have been I was not going to be able to
- 7:38recall to you before I rewatched it.
- 7:40Yes, But there is this scene super early on in the movie in
- 7:45which like this gaggle of girls are are like fresh out of soccer
- 7:48practice and they're listening to their favorite singer.
- 7:51More on this to. Come.
- 7:53But the scene is like they're dancing and then they stand on
- 7:57the couch and they step over. They like, move their weight to
- 8:01the back of the couch and the whole couch flips.
- 8:04And I swear my Mr. and I did that.
- 8:07Yeah, I think because we saw it in this.
- 8:10Course what? What other reason would you
- 8:11have? You wouldn't have even thought
- 8:13like, oh, if I do this, the couch is going to knock over.
- 8:15Yeah. And so it it feels insane to say
- 8:22that that is why it looms so large, but that I know that we
- 8:25did that action after having seen the movie, like underscores
- 8:29it was a big deal. No, I couldn't have told you
- 8:31why. No, but honestly, that is the
- 8:34that is the key to staying power in a movie is the choreography.
- 8:38And really, if this had been made today, that would have been
- 8:42like a TikTok trend. They would have been like, all
- 8:43right, step on the couch and make a knock over.
- 8:47That would have been a whole thing.
- 8:48And so it's almost like you sort of had that in a in its own way,
- 8:53in a 2004 kind of way. Yeah, No one else knew.
- 8:55No one else knew until they came over to our house and then we
- 8:58forced them to do it with us. But yeah.
- 8:59And I love that. One of my favorite things about
- 9:02Disney Channel original movies D coms.
- 9:04Of course it is choreography. Yeah, yeah.
- 9:07And like the outfits too, choreography, the outfits, the
- 9:11fashion accessories, like yes. And it's just it's also wild to
- 9:15like watch these stars. I'm like, oh, Danielle
- 9:17Panabaker, Like, how does that name?
- 9:19That name has been living in my head, yes for years.
- 9:22And I see Brenda Saug. I'm like, I was obsessed with.
- 9:24Brenda Oh my God. I still am.
- 9:26Still am. Yeah, these women are still
- 9:28working. I love Brenda Song in the last
- 9:31Showgirl. Oh my God, she was so good.
- 9:35I mean, and I just adore her. She's married to Macaulay
- 9:38Culkin, which I think is really fun.
- 9:40I just yeah, Life is a Disney Channel original movie.
- 9:43Honestly it's so is it's so is OK So anything else about like
- 9:49the background of this movie and like your experience re watching
- 9:52it overall? About the background, no, I
- 9:56think actually what's a little disappointing for me to realize
- 10:00is like there's not much background to this movie.
- 10:05And I guess that's maybe because, like the plot is pretty
- 10:06simple, like, you know, it is called stuck in the suburbs.
- 10:11Maybe it means something, maybe it doesn't, that we never know
- 10:13what suburb that is. And that's what I love about it.
- 10:16It's like it does not matter. Yeah, it could.
- 10:18Truly. Be anywhere.
- 10:19It could be anywhere in anything.
- 10:21Yeah. Yeah, I loved it.
- 10:22So I feel I was disappointed that there was not as much lore
- 10:27about like to look up now, but I guess that kind of suits the
- 10:32film. Itself.
- 10:34Yeah, totally. Because it's like this could be
- 10:36anyone. I mean, like we were saying
- 10:37before we started recording, it's like this could have been
- 10:40me. Yeah, it could be me.
- 10:42Why not me? Why not me?
- 10:44And frankly, why not me? Because.
- 10:47Because if this could happen to anyone at any time.
- 10:52Why not me? And I think that's like the
- 10:53power of so many Disney Channel original movies is like, oh I
- 10:58too could be could switch phones with a pop *.
- 11:01Right. And that that pop star could
- 11:03literally be any pop. Like he's literally just like
- 11:06capital P Capital S pop *. And everyone is obsessed with
- 11:10him. Like everyone knows all of his
- 11:12song. Yeah, it was.
- 11:14It's that could be the belief that I could be, what's her
- 11:20name? Brittany.
- 11:21Brittany. Brittany, who's played by
- 11:23Danielle Panabaker. In my head, I swore it was Kay
- 11:26Panabaker, but I guess she was in other Disney Channel original
- 11:29movies. But I, I looked that up when I
- 11:33was watching the movie. I was like, no, not Kay.
- 11:34But I Danielle's name had totally escaped me, right?
- 11:37Totally. The Panabaker sisters.
- 11:40We're big on Disney Channel. But it's like watching the
- 11:43movie. I remember being a kid and
- 11:45thinking, oh, yeah, the belief that that could be you, of
- 11:47course, is what makes it so special.
- 11:50As we were saying, that was an adult.
- 11:52I'm like watching this movie and I'm like, it's a pretty
- 11:54simplistic plot and the the egoism that kicks it is not.
- 11:58Oh, I could switch phones to the pop stars.
- 12:00Oh, I could write this. I could.
- 12:01Write a movie. I should write a.
- 12:03Movie it's I've been spending too much time not writing a
- 12:07movie. So it continues to inspire
- 12:11decades. Later, decades later, continues
- 12:13to inspire. And that is so important for
- 12:15women in their 30s. Yeah, truly, so true.
- 12:18Really for any inspiration. We could get.
- 12:21In this economy, we really do. The beginning starts with like
- 12:25this montage of teen magazine. So going going back to what I
- 12:28was saying before, before I interrupted myself and we had
- 12:30to, you know, of course, go back.
- 12:32What was your favorite teen magazine?
- 12:35Did you have one? Oh my gosh, yes.
- 12:40I I'm trying to remember the names of them.
- 12:44I know my sister and I would like, loved going to CVS with
- 12:48our mom. This is like, I feel like this
- 12:49is an iconic scene. This can't just have been us.
- 12:52They were doing this, but we would just go sit straight to
- 12:55the magazine aisle, pull out all the like teeny bopper, J14,
- 12:59Tiger beat. Now it's coming back, we would
- 13:01like pull out all those magazines and just plop down on
- 13:03the floor. Of the CDL.
- 13:05Fun and flip through the magazines.
- 13:06Man that is stuck in the suburbs.
- 13:09What is? What is the line?
- 13:11A sea of same hoping. For what did they say in the
- 13:13movie? Sea of sameness?
- 13:15Hoping for a glimmer of hope and a sea of sameness.
- 13:19I think that's what of Brittanys lyrics, which is, you know,
- 13:21aren't we all just always hoping for a glimmer of hoping for
- 13:24hope, hoping for hope and a sea of sameness with a bunch of
- 13:28women named Britney, which I also loved how she was like,
- 13:31yeah, I'm one of seven Britney's.
- 13:32I was like, love her, obsessed. But I feel yeah, favorite Mac,
- 13:37J14, Tiger beef, something like that.
- 13:39Totally. If if you told me that they had
- 13:42wildly different like personalities or takes now, I
- 13:46would not be able to defend by choice.
- 13:48Of course, yeah, 'cause they do all kind of blend together.
- 13:51But there were some that were sort of like a little bit, not
- 13:55necessarily teeny bopper, but we're still like teen magazines
- 13:58with some celebrity coverage like Teen Vogue and 17 and Cosmo
- 14:03Girl. Those were even kind.
- 14:07Of I. Feel like it used to be more
- 14:08geared towards like the high gloss but younger.
- 14:12Yes, exactly. Those were like the classy
- 14:14magazines that are not just, like, gossip rags.
- 14:18And Tiger Beat and J14 were just gossip rags.
- 14:21Totally. It was like anything
- 14:23intellectual was happening. It was like, what is Brenda
- 14:26Song's favorite food? Yep.
- 14:29Yeah, yeah. And we loved it for that.
- 14:31And God bless him for that, truly.
- 14:33Yeah. But I I really was taken back to
- 14:36a place with just the montage of teen magazines.
- 14:39I said I want to be on the floor of CVS with Mary reading a teen
- 14:45magazine. And who doesn't?
- 14:47Freedom Girl, It's everything. So OK, we're introduced to the
- 14:52pop star Jordan, which when I was growing up we had.
- 14:57Or is it Justin? It's.
- 14:58Jordan Ko OK. Yeah, When I was growing up, we,
- 15:02my mom's best friend, Pam, her kids, Andrea and Jordan, were
- 15:06the same age as my sister and me.
- 15:07So we would all play together a lot.
- 15:09And anytime that there was a character in a movie named
- 15:13Jordan, it would be Jordan's like worst day because it was
- 15:17like it would be like Jordan, Jordan, Jordan, Jordan, Jordan,
- 15:20Jordan, Jordan. Anyways, that's not that
- 15:23interesting, but it is. But I was thinking about, you
- 15:26know what? Shout out Jordan.
- 15:27I was thinking about Jordan the whole time, thinking, oh man,
- 15:30I'm so glad that he's not here for us to be going.
- 15:34Jordan, Jordan, Jordan. He is Taron Callum.
- 15:39I forgot that he did stuff before sketch comedy.
- 15:42Yeah, I I did too. It was almost it was almost
- 15:45satirical to see him in a role of like, I know.
- 15:48And that sounds so God, that sounds so mean.
- 15:50Like, no, no, no, everyone starts somewhere.
- 15:52OK. And honestly hopeful.
- 15:54It's it's more hope that is, Oh my gosh, we need it all that we
- 15:57can get. But truly like.
- 16:00He was he's not a bad looking guy.
- 16:03This is not this is not supposed to be a read of him being like,
- 16:07Oh well, he's so ugly. It's like a satire.
- 16:09But like of all read between the lines.
- 16:15But of all of the Disney Channel original movie, like Pop Star
- 16:19Hot Guys, he is definitely the one that is most like, oh that
- 16:25guy has a future in sketch comedy.
- 16:27You know what I mean? Well, it's also wild to be I was
- 16:31cackling and just had my jaw a gape while this plays out.
- 16:36A central piece of the storyline at the beginning of the movie is
- 16:38that he has this like long hair, right?
- 16:41And it that does not age well, that hair looks so bad.
- 16:46Oh my God, it looks. It looks.
- 16:49Honestly, it's a disgrace, yes. And he, it's like kind of
- 16:52greasy. It's just, it's not a good look.
- 16:54And he winds up through a series of events, winds up getting his
- 16:57hair cut. It's kind of against his will,
- 17:00but not but it's also sort of like what he wanted.
- 17:03Yeah. But deep down, deep down by
- 17:06these two women that know what he wants more than he does.
- 17:09And he looks so much better with the cut hair.
- 17:11But his producers are freaking out about.
- 17:13I'm like, guys, we we do have the entire we have a hair on
- 17:16makeup team here. Like we could have made this a
- 17:19little bit more believable. Right.
- 17:22Maybe. Maybe that like this long hair
- 17:25was like the hair, you know? I I get it because it's a that I
- 17:30feel like is was is the shtick right?
- 17:33Like the teeny bopper has the long hair, but I'm like no.
- 17:38It could have been could have put a little bit, you know what
- 17:41love and light to the hair and makeup on stuck in the suburbs,
- 17:44but they could have put a little bit more of their budget into
- 17:47making that wig a little bit, a little bit better.
- 17:51Just believable. That's what we're going for.
- 17:53For me to believe that I would think that's beautiful hair and
- 17:57not. That's an asset, yeah, to.
- 17:59Think that that's a a brand asset really.
- 18:04Yeah, I couldn't agree more. OK.
- 18:10One other thing that is interesting about like the
- 18:12timing of this movie is that this was right before Brenda
- 18:17Song went on to Suite Life of Zack and Cody.
- 18:19Like she had been in other stuff before.
- 18:21She had been in some Disney Channel original movies and had
- 18:24recurring roles on shows. But this was like, this was
- 18:27like, right when Brenda Song was like becoming who we know her to
- 18:31be. And that feels really special.
- 18:33It's I'm so glad you mentioned the timing because watching her,
- 18:37she like comes in as like this new kid at school, right?
- 18:40And she's just dressed like in a way that I mean, objectively now
- 18:45I would never, she has like a soccer ball hand.
- 18:48Oh, my God, The soccer ball handbag, these wackadoodle
- 18:50boots. And it's like, you do understand
- 18:52these children are 13 years old, right?
- 18:54Yeah. You know that this is junior
- 18:55high. It's so wild, but I'm.
- 18:58I was watching Brenda Song and I'm like, shit, that is like
- 19:01such a cool outfit. Yeah.
- 19:04I'm like fashion girly you. Feel through the screen, you're
- 19:08like, yeah, she's cool. She's an awesome person.
- 19:11And it felt very London Tipton Kodak to me.
- 19:15You know, it was. They're different characters for
- 19:17sure. But I I saw so many echoes of
- 19:21London Tipton in this film. Like that is who I know.
- 19:24Fred Desog. To be right.
- 19:26And so it's, it's interesting that this is like right before
- 19:29then, you know? Totally.
- 19:30It's like the the London Tipton influence on what's her name in
- 19:37Schitt's Creek. The the daughter.
- 19:44We pause. Nick, go ahead and edit that in
- 19:51O'Hara and rest in power. Yeah, rest in power.
- 19:55So anyways, the way that that character is like, oh, yeah,
- 20:01like this one time when I was in Ibiza, this one time when I was
- 20:04in Barcelona, this one time when I was in New York, this one time
- 20:07when I was in blah, blah, blah, like that feels very like London
- 20:11Tipton. Which of course feels very, Oh
- 20:15my God, What's her name in this movie?
- 20:19Her name, isn't it? Natasha.
- 20:22Natasha. She comes into school that she's
- 20:26a New Girl and she's like, I've been living in Europe and I and
- 20:31of course it is a lie. Yeah, it is a lie.
- 20:33But that's the thing about 2004 is that without social media,
- 20:39nobody knew where you were actually from.
- 20:41So who cares? Have you ever, do you ever like
- 20:47so Mary, have you ever lie? Do you want to do you want to
- 20:49confess anything here on this podcast?
- 20:52Have you ever told someone that you were from somewhere that you
- 20:54weren't, Or like made-up some sort of identity?
- 20:57I mean, in a serious manner, like with the actual hope of
- 21:01befriending this person and like, because have I lied about
- 21:06my identity? Yes.
- 21:08At a bar, my friends and I have done bits and pretended that
- 21:10we're, you know, getting some. Cool degree, that's so fun.
- 21:15You know, I love that. Not really that accents are
- 21:17involved. Like it's not that sure an
- 21:19acting she's, but she's an improviser.
- 21:22Have I lied on stage all the time?
- 21:26On the on the stage. But like, never, only ever as a
- 21:31bit, never with the actual hope and plan of like, I will lie to
- 21:35you, Molly, and that's how we'll become friends.
- 21:38And even though my lie is so easily disprovable, yeah, still
- 21:45I will have one year friendship. Like, yeah, that.
- 21:47No, never. Well, thank God, Yeah.
- 21:50And even if, even if this was the time when you came to
- 21:53confess to me, like something that you had been keeping to
- 21:56yourself or lying to me about, you know, I'm, I'm frankly, I'm
- 22:00glad it's not. It would have made for a great
- 22:02podcast. Oh.
- 22:03My God, I. Completely derailed the
- 22:05discussion. No, I would have gotten us right
- 22:08back on track to this movie because it is so good that even
- 22:11your confession that you are what?
- 22:12Like that you never sat on the floor of CVS and read these
- 22:17teeny bopper magazines that you had just lied to me about that?
- 22:20I mean, I could have just made that up.
- 22:21Yeah, you totally could have, but I.
- 22:23Didn't I? Didn't.
- 22:24I know you didn't. I thank you for that.
- 22:25The image. Was too visceral in vivid.
- 22:29Yeah, it was too specific to be made-up.
- 22:31You just can't write this stuff, folks.
- 22:33When I was in probably first grade, the answer is yes, I
- 22:37have. I was like when I always forget
- 22:40when I was in first grade, it was Saint Patrick's Day and I
- 22:43was like, it seems like being Irish is pretty cool.
- 22:48So I just told people I was Irish, just like my classmates
- 22:51and stuff. And then one time there was
- 22:53somebody and one of my classmates, their mom was
- 22:58pregnant. And so they were like getting a
- 23:00bunch of attention because it was like, oh, you're going to
- 23:02like be a Big Brother or whatever.
- 23:03And I was like, so is my mom. And I told a bunch of people
- 23:07that. And she wasn't, wasn't.
- 23:08And my teacher was like, oh, like Molly shared the news and
- 23:11she was like, what? Oh, see.
- 23:13That's a tricky one because your lie implicated.
- 23:15Yeah, absolutely. It did implicate someone.
- 23:17I was 6 but don't really know what's going on.
- 23:20But then I also, it was also around the time maybe like, I
- 23:23don't know, I think I was probably like 8 or 9 when I went
- 23:27to my first bar mitzvah. And I was like, this is awesome.
- 23:32I want to be Jewish. And so I did tell people I was
- 23:36Jewish for a little while. What's funny?
- 23:42The common theme, I guess. I no.
- 23:45It's pretty like. These Brenda songs live is like,
- 23:52oh, Once Upon a time I lived in Europe, my dad is in New York,
- 23:57like, and Molly's lies are like, no, my entire identity is not
- 24:02who you think. Just when you thought you knew
- 24:05me, I'm Jewish. Well, as you're saying this, I'm
- 24:10being brought back and I'm reminded that like, for whatever
- 24:13reason, I'm from Virginia. And so like went to school in
- 24:18Virginia and it was like a cool. I don't know that it was
- 24:23actually cool, but there was this gaggle of girls that would
- 24:26love to talk about how they were from Texas, what we're like
- 24:32second grade like. So you're arguably yes, your
- 24:36life has just begun, but you are from wherever you.
- 24:38Are wherever you are right then because.
- 24:41Where you're from, you don't really get to choose.
- 24:42So. And they had it was, I think
- 24:45with these three girls that I'm thinking of, they had all lived
- 24:48in Texas for like a year before they could function.
- 24:52Yeah. Any.
- 24:53And they just thought it was like this cool cultural thing to
- 24:56be like annoying, lean into the cowboy boots.
- 24:58And that was like, that was there like my culture?
- 25:01Yes. Yeah.
- 25:02And it's like you're 7 now and you were two when you were
- 25:05there. But I never lied about being
- 25:07from Texas. That does, really.
- 25:10Just and just. I gotta say, she's never lied
- 25:13about that and I've never heard her say that.
- 25:15This does remind me of and Amy, forgive me, this reminds me of
- 25:20my sister, how she was born in Mexico.
- 25:23She was born in Guadalajara because my parents were there
- 25:25for work. They lived there for like a
- 25:27couple of years in like a neighborhood with like all
- 25:31expats. They worked for like an American
- 25:34company, like, yes, my mom, my mom like learned Spanish and
- 25:39became fluent and like, you know, they they embraced the
- 25:42culture, but as much as like an expat working for a corporation
- 25:46in Guadalajara can. And so my sister lived there for
- 25:50her first two years of life. OK.
- 25:53And you would think? Oh, Ewie's going to get it back.
- 25:58Oh Amy, God bless her. She's like, you know, I do
- 26:04understand Spanish, like better than most people because I heard
- 26:07it so much when I was a baby. Like, shut up.
- 26:11That cannot be true. That absolutely cannot be true.
- 26:15And like my mom, my mom like, took a cooking class and she was
- 26:18there and like, learned how to make enchiladas like really
- 26:21well. And it's and Amy will be like,
- 26:23oh, yeah. Like, you know, my mom makes the
- 26:25best enchiladas from when we lived in Mexico, where I was
- 26:28born. And it's like girl, she's not a
- 26:34Mexican American. For those of you love to be.
- 26:38For those of you who are who are not watching this visually, I am
- 26:43white, non Hispanic and so is my sister.
- 26:48Can confirm this is a white girl so and and took it for not Irish
- 26:56either. No, not Irish either.
- 26:59Just my my ancestors have been in the US for like 500 years.
- 27:05Like Mayflower people you know. Yeah.
- 27:09But she was not talking about being a Pilgrim.
- 27:10She was, believe it or not, you know that wasn't cool.
- 27:13You. Know what?
- 27:14Being a Pilgrim is so cool. And I actually am one.
- 27:19Yeah, she we went to. I'm sorry, but don't listen to
- 27:26this episode, Amy love you so much.
- 27:29She did tell people when we were on vacation once in Cancun, when
- 27:40people will be like, where are you from?
- 27:46Don't tell me she's saying Soy de Guadalajara.
- 27:57Maybe you were born. It means you were.
- 28:03From there. So those girls who said that
- 28:06they were from Texas, I couldn't agree more that they're not from
- 28:09Texas. They're not.
- 28:10They're not if you lived there for a year or if you can't even
- 28:14remember it. I mean, I was born in Idaho.
- 28:17I moved when I was a toddler. I don't remember it.
- 28:20I don't tell people I'm from Idaho.
- 28:24But it's worse when you say that you're from a foreign country.
- 28:26Yeah. So I take Guadalajara so tough,
- 28:32which she is. Greatest of faces too.
- 28:33Let me just say though, that she is a better person than me, OK?
- 28:37And so she does have that going for her.
- 28:40She's a really good person and she's better than.
- 28:41Me. Well, she's never lied about
- 28:44where she's from. That's actually an important
- 28:46distinction. She's not lied.
- 28:49She's just, you know, phrased it in such a way.
- 28:52Just. It was the the language barrier.
- 28:58But truly, when Brenda Song's character comes onto the scene
- 29:01saying, you know, I've been living in Europe, it's really
- 29:04giving like Hilaria Baldwin, like how you say cucumber.
- 29:09She's like, who is Jordan? I I am curious, do we find out
- 29:16in the she never knew. She genuinely did not know who
- 29:19Jordan Cahill was before she moved.
- 29:21I can't remember. This might be a potential plot
- 29:23hole because everyone in this town, this unnamed town, which
- 29:27is a suburb of an unnamed city. I was really trying to guess
- 29:31where because some scenes there was like Spanish Moss and like,
- 29:34is this Georgia? Is this South Carolina?
- 29:37But then what's the city like? Spanish Moss is by the so that
- 29:41I'm like California feels like a classic Disney move.
- 29:44But anyway to say, but everyone in this town knows who this guy
- 29:50is and you're assuming that he's an international pop star.
- 29:52He's not like only a star in this suburban town, but.
- 29:56He is allegedly from there, and I guess nobody else knew that.
- 30:00I'm like, if, you know, if you're paint, if you're calling
- 30:03your friends when you see that he's gotten a haircut, you know
- 30:05where he's from. Yeah, yeah.
- 30:09Anyway, so a couple couple notes.
- 30:12For the writers, the writers. But like she, everyone, even the
- 30:16the parents, know about this pop star.
- 30:17And Brenda Song, when she comes on to the scene, allegedly has
- 30:21no idea who he is. And I'm like, really?
- 30:24Really. That I know, but.
- 30:26I think that she's trying to maintain the facade of like, I'm
- 30:30not from here. She's committed.
- 30:32I have another. Like, this isn't my culture.
- 30:35I'm coming, I'm here with fresh eyes, you know, But it is really
- 30:39funny thinking about how in 2004, living in a different
- 30:43place means that you could have totally different cultural
- 30:47touchstones. And now it's like cultural
- 30:50touchstones are determined by the algorithm.
- 30:53Like when I, when I and I'm like, oh, have you heard this
- 30:57catchy new song by this guy with gorgeous long hair?
- 31:00It's like, well, it could be, it could be anybody because we're
- 31:04all on, we're all in different algorithms, you know what I
- 31:07mean? And instead, this was an era
- 31:10when people could, like, live in different places and that it
- 31:15determines their pop culture references, you know?
- 31:19Were there any? Like what were the touchstones
- 31:21of your area? Oh, that's a great question.
- 31:25OK. When I was when I was in junior
- 31:28high, three O 3 was huge, three O 3 baby.
- 31:34And so that was like, I think eventually they did become like
- 31:39more nationally known, but it was always kind of like it's a
- 31:42Colorado thing. Like we know them three O 3 life
- 31:46baby. I was a 97 O number though, so
- 31:49you couldn't really claim it. I know that was tough for.
- 31:52Me you should have lied about. That, God, I actually can't
- 31:54really lie about that. I know because then it's right
- 31:56there. It's really right there on your
- 31:57phone. Yeah.
- 31:58So that was tough. The trials being from Fort
- 32:02Collins, Co. The things that oh that reminded
- 32:06me of home when they pull up to the house and she goes whose
- 32:09house is this? Does anyone live here because
- 32:12the houses all look the same. Oh, hilarious, Molly, Speaking
- 32:15of montages, like yes, it the movie opens on a montage of like
- 32:21the magazines, but also it opens on just like shot after shot of
- 32:25these houses. And it's funny to me because The
- 32:28Who am I to judge the camera work in a Disney Channel or
- 32:30Michelle movie? But you like, it's kind of like
- 32:33uneven and like wobbly and it's just, it's so tight to like I
- 32:42was. No drone shots.
- 32:45I was laughing just at brick house after brick house after
- 32:48brick house and I'm like, they could actually all be the same
- 32:51house. Like the way that this is shot
- 32:53and yeah, that the way that it killed cut is.
- 32:56Very funny because you're right, it could have been just like 1
- 33:01loop. Yes, over and over.
- 33:03Pretty funny, pretty funny. But I did like the there were
- 33:06these funny little jokes in it that weren't so heavy-handed as
- 33:12Disney Channel original movies often can be with love and
- 33:15light. But like the house is all the
- 33:18same. The fact that all the girls got
- 33:20matching shoes because Oh my God, because she thinks that
- 33:24she's got one-of-a-kind shoes and the other girls are like, I
- 33:27found those shoes. We're all going to have the same
- 33:28shoes. And she was like, oh, God,
- 33:32everything's the same. And then, yeah, pulling up to
- 33:35the house and being like, wait, whose house is this?
- 33:38Does anyone live here? You know, you're, you're stuck
- 33:41in a loop. Every street is the same name.
- 33:43It's all like Mayflower Lade, Mayflower Court, Mayflower Dr.
- 33:47Like, all of that was pretty funny.
- 33:53And the fact that her name is Brittany and she's like, I'm one
- 33:54of seven at Macy's. It's yeah, there's so many.
- 34:00Great, like the brother is a funny and I would argue like
- 34:06ultimately pretty unimportant character, but like he's just he
- 34:12again is another character scene moment, something that I saw in
- 34:16this film rewatching and I'm like, oh, he looms so large in
- 34:20my memory of this film, like this kid who's like hiding under
- 34:23her sister's bed all the time, like hanging out behind her.
- 34:26Door on her. A hilarious gag, by the way,
- 34:30and. So there's this whole subplot
- 34:33that feels like a generous term because there is no plot, but it
- 34:37is this sub sub thing of brother just trying to eavesdrop, I
- 34:41guess, on his sister, don't really prank her.
- 34:45And it's it's delightful, but it's so stupid.
- 34:49Yeah, there is no point to it. There's no point to it except
- 34:51for being like my little brother.
- 34:55And she's got an older sister who is like a brainiac and she
- 34:59is nervous when she's driving. She's a horrible driver, but
- 35:02pretty pretty much good at everything else.
- 35:04And again, I think that the whole point of that is basically
- 35:06it's just like my older sister. Yeah, you're like, I'm the metal
- 35:12child. Life is crazy life.
- 35:14Is nuts and it's funny because I don't know if you want to get
- 35:18really meta with your analysis of stuck in the suburbs.
- 35:21Well, there's something to be said for like, okay, everybody
- 35:23felt this way growing up, right? And if Disney Channel, like,
- 35:29which I would not expect them to do, but like watching it back as
- 35:32an adult, I'm like, OK, yeah, I felt this way as a kid.
- 35:36Every person in any town in anywhere wherever felt this way.
- 35:41But what's funny is because Brittany is kind of like, her
- 35:45older sister is kind of this awkward brainiac.
- 35:47Her younger brother is kind of bothering her, like all these
- 35:50things. And she's like, oh, shucks.
- 35:52Well, like she's right to think. Well, shucks.
- 35:56Like the setup is not. The setup is like maybe more
- 36:01generous to her than she actually deserves.
- 36:06Yeah, Yeah, I think that is true.
- 36:09Except for her mom, I feel like she gives her mom a hard time
- 36:12and her mom is like a. Cool lady she seems so patient
- 36:17like really cool like thoughtful.
- 36:20I am kind of curious, like, OK, so the the whole thing for the
- 36:25mom is that she wants to save this historic house in their
- 36:29town. She's like, it's the only thing
- 36:31left that's not like the mall. It's the only thing left that's
- 36:35not a Chili's. It's the only thing left that
- 36:38makes it unique. And I'm kind of like, maybe I
- 36:43was not paying attention fully, but I was kind of like, but what
- 36:46is the house and who what's at stake?
- 36:50The stakes felt I knew that they were important to her, but I was
- 36:54kind of like, OK, well, is this going to be bought by private
- 36:57equity and like turn into something, something bad?
- 37:01Is this a house for what? For what?
- 37:05See Molly again, I think we returned to our earlier point of
- 37:08we could write this and it would be so much better.
- 37:12And frankly, it would have been a lot better, no like.
- 37:13There's lots of, I had the same question.
- 37:15There's you. You were paying perfectly close
- 37:18attention, I think because yeah, there is.
- 37:22What is the house? Who is it being sold?
- 37:24To right. Is it the house?
- 37:27Is it like a historic landmark that they want to tear down to
- 37:31turn into a cuffy chain? Like what do they want to do?
- 37:35Are they trying to get into a park?
- 37:36There are other ways that this, that storyline could be.
- 37:41We could get details about that storyline that make it more
- 37:44interesting or telling. And yeah, there's not, there's
- 37:48not a lot of legs there. I do wish that it would have
- 37:52been like an old tree, you know what I mean?
- 37:54I wish that it would have been like the oldest oak tree in the
- 37:57town. And they're like, this oak tree
- 37:59is as old as this town, 50 years, because that's when
- 38:02suburbs started. And like, you know, don't tear
- 38:07down this tree to make a mall, you know?
- 38:11And if her mom would have been like an environmentalist, like,
- 38:14that would have been a really cool thing.
- 38:17But instead it is this old decrepit house.
- 38:21That actually doesn't seem to have.
- 38:23We never are told what it's connection to the town is.
- 38:28And so again, I think like a cool thing that might have might
- 38:33have happened if we had written description, it's like, OK,
- 38:36wait, does Brittany realize through her mom?
- 38:38'S activism question mark. That like, wait, the town that
- 38:42she's from, that she degrades so much in her own mind is actually
- 38:46this really cool place. It's like rife with history and
- 38:50like, beautiful tree, you know, whatever.
- 38:52Yeah, whatever the threat is that you want to pull on the one
- 38:56place in America with a beautiful tree.
- 38:59But like I think there it's it was wild to watch because they
- 39:03get so close to so many things that the movie itself never
- 39:08actually connects. But watching it, I'm like.
- 39:10Wait, you could you could connect all these scenes really,
- 39:14It would be really easy. Instead we spend time doing like
- 39:19a flashback. We had like 3 different
- 39:21flashbacks to other times in this movie.
- 39:25Yeah, I forgot about that. In an 80 minute movie, it was
- 39:28like And in case you forgot 40 minutes ago, there's a scene
- 39:32with these girls dancing around their room.
- 39:35Oh, and like the Oh my gosh, does this happen at the end
- 39:38where like Brenda Song and Danielle Panabaker become
- 39:42friends again 'cause they have like the slight risk and then
- 39:44they do the. Montage, so many montages
- 39:46obviously, obviously of like their friendship that I think
- 39:50started like 3 days before. Totally yes.
- 39:52They're like and remember every moment of their friendship up
- 39:54until now that you just saw. And it's like key scene is like
- 39:58them both being. Goalies in the soccer, yeah,
- 40:02like being bombarded with balls. And it's like, all so tender.
- 40:06They're like, oh, my God, remember that?
- 40:07Remember that from 20 minutes ago?
- 40:09Yeah. So there was time, you know,
- 40:12there was time that they could have used to just, like, make a
- 40:15couple of connections. But at the same time I didn't
- 40:18care. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 40:19I was like, yeah, totally. She should go and support her
- 40:23mom. It made me.
- 40:25Did you ever make movies as a kid?
- 40:27Of course. So it made me think about movies
- 40:30that my sister and our friends and I would that we would all
- 40:33make as kids. And I would always like, you
- 40:36know, just being type A probably annoying.
- 40:40You were the. Director, I was the writer
- 40:41director. Like I would try to give people
- 40:44some space and like let them star in it.
- 40:46But I would have like pretty large secondary role for sure.
- 40:50Yeah, because not greedy, but. Obviously, she's not going to be
- 40:54the star, the writer and the director and the producer.
- 40:57Too much, Too much. She's got to be the Co *.
- 41:01But I like we still have so many of those movies and even when I
- 41:06was younger, especially now, but even when I was younger, I would
- 41:09look back like we would rewatch those those films and I'd be
- 41:13like, yeah, this makes no sense. Yeah, you know things.
- 41:17And again, having been the writer, I I like could remind
- 41:21myself of oh, this is I knew how I was thinking about all these
- 41:25blocks and story pieces, but I wasn't an artful enough like
- 41:29artist to actually connect anything.
- 41:32And then I watched this movie and I'm like, you were actually
- 41:35punching pretty. You were.
- 41:38You're still some more credit. You were punching above your
- 41:40weight class like it's. It was wild.
- 41:43And it was like, comforting to realize, yeah, OK.
- 41:48Even just channel original movies, they're not connecting
- 41:51all the dots. Not everyone is connecting all
- 41:53the dots. No, they're just throwing stuff
- 41:55at the wall. There's not a full writers room
- 41:57in there. No, no, no, no.
- 42:00No, no. No, no, no, no one, no one went
- 42:02through the script and said I'm going to punch this up.
- 42:04Yeah. No, not once.
- 42:06They said first draft, great, let's go.
- 42:08Yeah, absolutely. And I'm so glad they did.
- 42:10Yeah, they had a, they had so much like limited to style sets,
- 42:19which I loved. I loved, of course, the the
- 42:23classic teen star posters all over the wall.
- 42:28And then like, of course she's like embarrassed.
- 42:31And so when her friend comes over, she's like, I got to take
- 42:33all down all the posters from the wall and she's got these big
- 42:36ass flowers, like daisies everywhere.
- 42:39Everything is like that, light purple.
- 42:43I just. Yeah, the color palette amazing,
- 42:46limited to like in the outfits in the bedroom, like everything,
- 42:51but also the Libby Lou hairstyles.
- 42:53You know, I'm like, oh, this is it's again.
- 42:57Even as a 30 year old adult, I'm looking at this.
- 43:00I'm like, shit. That's cool.
- 43:01That's pretty. Cool, that's cool cuz it spoke
- 43:03to what I knew was cool at the time of.
- 43:05Course, and it will always be cool.
- 43:07Always. I never played soccer.
- 43:08I would love a soccer ball purse.
- 43:11Actually, that's not true. I played soccer when I was five.
- 43:13OK, there I am. OK, but I wouldn't.
- 43:17Be cool you. Got me.
- 43:21I would walk around and just kind of like, wave on my
- 43:24parents, like, pick daisies, like, kind of just, you know,
- 43:28you're like, Molly, go to the ball.
- 43:29And I just say, hey, everyone, I might be here.
- 43:33Look at me. I'm running around with my
- 43:34friends. But that's what being 5 and
- 43:37playing soccer is, right? Yeah.
- 43:39I think so. Anyway, so I want a soccer ball
- 43:43bag. Yeah, like.
- 43:45It's, I really honed it on that bag and I was like, I I don't
- 43:49think that I would actively seek that out and spend money on it
- 43:53now. But I do want it.
- 43:54I deeply, deeply want it, yeah. And the thing that also is kind
- 43:58of sad to me is that like there probably is something like that
- 44:02Urban Outfitters. And it's sort of like, I want, I
- 44:07say out of one side of my mouth that I want it.
- 44:09And then on the other side I'm like, but I don't want it.
- 44:12I don't want it like that. Like, I don't want, I don't want
- 44:15other people who weren't there, you know, I don't want, I don't
- 44:19want this TikTok generation. You know, I you need to
- 44:22understand that this is a stuck in the suburbs reference when I
- 44:24carry my soccer ball. Back.
- 44:25Know your history, know the lore.
- 44:31Yeah, we said that there was not lore around this film.
- 44:33False. Absolutely.
- 44:35There absolutely is. You're so right.
- 44:37A lot of a lot of really interesting hats, a lot of
- 44:40really interesting little scarves.
- 44:42We talked about this last week with High School Musical as
- 44:45well. I mean, that was 2006.
- 44:47This is 2004, but skinny little scarves.
- 44:50Yeah. Were huge, big time, a lot of
- 44:52colors that I wouldn't say go together, no, but they work.
- 44:58But they work. Don't match but.
- 44:59Work. Yeah, totally.
- 45:00Yeah. Yeah, it was the era.
- 45:02It was the era of just kind of saying, is this color loud?
- 45:07Perfect. Perfect, I'll take 3 and I'm
- 45:11going to layer all of them with layer.
- 45:13Layer scarf, please. I'm looking back at my notes and
- 45:19trying to think of of different things that really like stuck
- 45:23out to me. I think of course, the
- 45:26technology was so iconic. I mean, this is a movie about
- 45:30cell phones being accidentally swapped, swapping a phone with a
- 45:34pop star. And this was this came out
- 45:39before I had a cell phone. I didn't get a cell phone until
- 45:41a few years later, but but I did love seeing like the the vintage
- 45:47tech, beautiful, lovely. But also this was a time in
- 45:53which like, you know, of course, people weren't always carrying
- 45:57their phones around. So it was sort of, it was
- 46:01believable that like you could be without your phone for like 5
- 46:05days and your life wouldn't really be that different.
- 46:08I mean, it's only the fact that she has the phone of a pop star,
- 46:12not that she is missing her own phone, you know what I mean?
- 46:16Totally. Her mom is not like no one's
- 46:18looking at Find My Friends. There's no It's so simple.
- 46:21I will say the scene in which the phone swap happens, that is
- 46:27another comical element that deserves to be discussed because
- 46:31it is out after a concert or a meet and greet.
- 46:34Yeah, he's doing like he's filming a music video, and so
- 46:37everyone's there watching because this is the most
- 46:40exciting thing that's happened in their town and ever since
- 46:43they built that old fucking house.
- 46:45You know, and he like, walks out, Jordan Cahill walks out
- 46:49into this scene of a door, this sea of adoring fan.
- 46:53And in all of the hubbub, like his producer drops his phone or
- 46:58Jordan drops his phone. And So what ensues?
- 47:01Is this like dramatic scramble? Where it is truly.
- 47:04Just like Brittany Aaron's maybe use her last name and Danielle
- 47:08Panabaker, whoever the the protagonist is then like just on
- 47:13her heads and knees moving, not even moving.
- 47:16Things around actually just kind of patting, kind of patting.
- 47:20And Jordan Cahill's producer is doing the same.
- 47:21But they're just, they never once look at each other in the
- 47:24eye. They never say, oh, sorry,
- 47:26here's they do not. They're truly rushing.
- 47:29And I can't really remember. Why they're rushing they're.
- 47:31Rushing but are just patting the ground despite if I get the only
- 47:35thing on the ground is they're 2 phones nothing else.
- 47:38There's not leaves covering, there's covering the phones and
- 47:42and yet it feels like a really long drawn out.
- 47:45I was laughing just at the length.
- 47:47I'm like this could be two seconds and we would understand.
- 47:49Yeah, but it was really more like 7 to 8, like of them just
- 47:53going pat, pat, pat, pat, pat, pat, pat.
- 47:56And then, of course, ending up with the wrong phone.
- 47:59And having in my memory very different looking phones, like
- 48:04visually and yet still not realizing what has happened
- 48:10after grabbing the phone that is not theirs, getting onto a bus,
- 48:15exiting different directions on the stage.
- 48:17And yeah, it's, it's wild. It is wild, but you know, I
- 48:23guess it is also a time when like not everyone has a phone.
- 48:27So it's not like everyone has like their own unique phone
- 48:31case. I mean, obviously both of those
- 48:33were unique, but you know, it's like there's only so many types
- 48:38of phones. I don't know.
- 48:41I'm really doing a lot of work trying to justify it, but I
- 48:44think it really is, you know, I think she was just so swept at
- 48:48the moment and having just seen. The Jordan blinded by fame.
- 48:53You're right. That makes it makes sense, yeah.
- 48:54That makes it makes sense. And with his floppy ass dumbass
- 48:57long hair. That's why he couldn't see his
- 48:59phone. That's.
- 49:00Exactly right. He couldn't see his phone.
- 49:01It was in his eyes. OK, so they like.
- 49:07One thing I love about the relationship between Brittany
- 49:10and Natasha is that even though Natasha is in fact not from
- 49:13Europe and has not been living there and her dad just travels
- 49:17for work to Buffalo, NY, she, she has the confidence of a
- 49:24London Tipton of a Alexis from Schitt's Creek.
- 49:29That's her name. Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding,
- 49:31Ding. She has the confidence of that
- 49:33type of woman who, and it really gives Brittany an opportunity to
- 49:39grow. Like when she goes into the into
- 49:42the hotel and she's like, you just have to act like you know
- 49:45what you're doing and you have to be confident and you'll get
- 49:47what you want. And I mean, how formative was
- 49:51that for me as a nine year old watching that and saying, wow, I
- 49:54really could get away with a lot if I was just confident?
- 49:57And then the next day, only with her first fun, that's fun.
- 50:02And she walked in and said, that's right, I'm Jewish.
- 50:07So, you know, wield your confidence.
- 50:10Yeah, thoroughly. Look, OK, I'm not going to be
- 50:13that person that's like, well, I have Jewish friends, but I do
- 50:16have, I did tell a, a couple of Jewish friends that I did as a
- 50:20nine year old claim a Jewish identity and they said, I think
- 50:24that's awesome. We.
- 50:25We. There we go.
- 50:32I did not convert, but I still think I mean, I start, but
- 50:36honestly, I still I'm like what AI was like this is a beautiful
- 50:39culture. I was like, this is so fun.
- 50:42Well, I just want to have a bucket.
- 50:43I really just want to have a party, frankly.
- 50:45I mean, Meredith Marx did it at like, you know, 50, whatever,
- 50:48but she was actually Jewish MyHeritage, so.
- 50:53But no, the confidence is oh, it's it is genuinely striking to
- 50:59and I don't even mean this in like a in a in a bad way.
- 51:03It was it was actually genuinely inspiring to watch this movie to
- 51:08clock and remind yourself I'm watching the IT.
- 51:11They seemed older than 13 to me, but they are in fact supposed to
- 51:14be 13 year olds and or even 12 like depending on mid like when
- 51:19middle school starts. But when that hotel seat.
- 51:23I'm so glad you Oh my God, because I had to like rewire my
- 51:27brain to remind myself this is a 13 year old girl like going up
- 51:33to also a 13 year old belt like Dell belly and basically being
- 51:37like, no, we're we're we're going to go into Jordan Cahill's
- 51:41room and it it is laughable and shocking on the one hand, but it
- 51:47is also like, wait, the message that she's delivering to
- 51:50Brittany and to young viewers everywhere all.
- 51:54The viewers like me. Is like, no, you can be loud.
- 51:59You can like yeah, so. You can be like, you can be
- 52:03strategic in getting what you want, like you can solve
- 52:05problems. You can you can just not take no
- 52:09for an answer when when an adult tells you no.
- 52:15Or I mean, yeah, he was basically their peer, that belt.
- 52:19Totally. But still when someone in.
- 52:21Authority tells you you. Can't just be confident and
- 52:24maybe they'll just let you get away with it.
- 52:28And I also think something that was that really made an
- 52:31impression on me was just this narrative of like the tortured
- 52:37pop star, like the pop star who wants to just like be in touch
- 52:40with his like real artistry. It's very like Britney Spears
- 52:46lucky. You know, it was, I think that
- 52:49this was like a common, a common tale at the time.
- 52:53And unfortunately, it just didn't really translate to a
- 52:56shift in cultural perception of pop stars.
- 53:00Like, it didn't make it didn't make us as a culture be like,
- 53:05oh, we should really let pop stars have more autonomy.
- 53:09It was just like, yeah, Oh my God, That's like, so sad.
- 53:12Yeah, yeah. I will say there was a moment at
- 53:15many moments throughout the movie where I was like, is this
- 53:18an anti capitalist movie? I know I was like, is this Josie
- 53:22and the Pussycat? I was like, hold on, hold on.
- 53:24We're we're getting somewhere just because there is this
- 53:28tension, which I feel like a lot of Disney movies did play with
- 53:32because they like want you to. And I, I kind of like this.
- 53:36They like want the viewers to see themselves in a lot of the,
- 53:41the like kids that are just normal kids, but then also they
- 53:45want the normal kids in the movie to see themselves in the
- 53:47pop stars. They want the kids that are
- 53:48watching to see themselves in the pop stars.
- 53:50Like that's cool. But there is this tension
- 53:52between Jordan pop star but really just a regular guy but.
- 53:57Really just a songwriter. Yeah, and his, like production,
- 54:01his management team, that one of the his producers is like his
- 54:05best friend from growing up. So he's kind of more aligned
- 54:09with Jordan. But the manager is the real like
- 54:12if this movie has a villain, which is a stretch, then it's
- 54:15the manager. But that was an interesting
- 54:17tension to see play out because, yes, it is simple and it's kind
- 54:21of expected for a Disney Channel movie.
- 54:22But I was like, wait, this is kind of sick.
- 54:25Right. Yeah, but they're like, wait,
- 54:27maybe I shouldn't just do what these people say just because
- 54:31they're making money off of me. Yeah, it was really interesting
- 54:33watching. I watched, Sorry, Knocked Mike
- 54:36watch this movie early yesterday evening.
- 54:40Later yesterday evening, I watched the Moment, the Charli
- 54:44XCX mockumentary about about like basically her her
- 54:52management taking over this brat tour and making it into
- 54:55something like totally ridiculous.
- 54:58It's very good. I would recommend it.
- 55:01But it was hilarious watching those two right next to each
- 55:04other because I mean, the plot is so similar that it's like
- 55:07this pop star that like everyone who's trying to like make a buck
- 55:13off of this person is, is putting them into a box and
- 55:16trying to make them into this version of themselves that they
- 55:20aren't. And trying to just like please
- 55:22the record label and please Amazon and please like all of
- 55:25these different stakeholders at the cost of the artistry.
- 55:31And it was, I mean, both of them were like caricatures of the pop
- 55:37star experience and also like, portrayed in a way that, like,
- 55:43could not be more different because one is the moment
- 55:46produced by Charli XCX. The other is a Disney Channel
- 55:48original movie. But they could not exist without
- 55:51each other. They could not exist without
- 55:53each other, exactly. Stuck in the suburbs, Jordan
- 55:56Cahill walked so Charli XCX could run.
- 55:58That is exactly right, and I've always said it right.
- 56:01I've been saying that since 2004.
- 56:03Absolutely. I've been saying that about
- 56:04Taran Killam for years. I've always been saying he one
- 56:08day will influence pop star Charli XCX.
- 56:12In fact, all of celebrity the way that we think about and
- 56:15consume celebrities. Exactly.
- 56:17Yeah. So thanks, Karen.
- 56:18Totally. But it was, you know, I was kind
- 56:20of thinking like, you know, by the end of the movie, it seems
- 56:23like Jordan and Brittany are friends.
- 56:28Or are they something more? She's like, oh, I'll see you in
- 56:32New York, like, blah, blah, blah.
- 56:34I couldn't really tell, like what's the nature of this
- 56:36relationship? Now I know and I as much I, I
- 56:41felt myself like want them, wanting them to become something
- 56:44more, but I have to. I'm kind of glad that the movie
- 56:47doesn't dive too much into that because at the end of the day,
- 56:50it is just a movie about a girl navigating her life with her
- 56:55friends, like how a normal person thinks about celebrity.
- 56:59Britney herself wants to be an artist one day.
- 57:01And so it's like, oh, I like that.
- 57:03They don't even they don't they did not lean into having to make
- 57:08it a romance movie, right? Or even like, oh, the happy
- 57:11ending requires that not just Britney's already had her stroke
- 57:15of luck and switched from with a pop star.
- 57:16As if that weren't enough, well, now it's her boyfriend too.
- 57:19Like I'm glad as much as I felt myself be like, oh, are they
- 57:23something more? Well, they won't.
- 57:24Be Oh, I kind of like that we keep this movie just like, no,
- 57:27no, no, that's not what has to happen to actually like wrap
- 57:30this up and to give us an ending.
- 57:32The primary relationship is between these two girls and
- 57:35their friendship. Yeah.
- 57:36And I, of course, I will take a movie about female friendship
- 57:40over a romance any day. Yeah.
- 57:41Because that is, those are the relationships that matter.
- 57:44That's a true love story. Yeah.
- 57:46There we go. There you go.
- 57:47Yeah, they get the montage. Three weeks together.
- 57:52But it is so magical when you're that age and you like, meet some
- 57:55really cool girl and like, you just hit it off and you're like,
- 58:00it doesn't even matter that they don't like the same pop star.
- 58:03And also that's crazy because like, that seems to be what
- 58:06really bonds the rest of the girls together is that they're
- 58:08like, we live in this boring place.
- 58:09We play soccer and we love Jordan.
- 58:13Done. You know, it really did remind
- 58:16me of, like, the how easy it was to make.
- 58:20Like, just because you don't have to have that much in
- 58:23common. Yeah, you really don't.
- 58:26Totally. In fact, you can lie about your
- 58:28identity. You can be a totally different
- 58:29person and you can still actually be really good friends.
- 58:32Right? Yeah.
- 58:33And also, it's like, you know, she did lie about, you know, who
- 58:37she was, like where she was from, but she wasn't like, she
- 58:42wasn't really like deceptive in her relationship with her.
- 58:47She wasn't trying to like, make a friend so that she could
- 58:50bamboozle them and like, take advantage of her.
- 58:53She just truly like, wanted a friend.
- 58:55And I feel like this is important to note too, that even
- 58:58though Brenda Song yes, lies, Natasha lies about like being
- 59:03from Europe, etcetera, she, like you said, she's not doing it to
- 59:07like climb some social ladder like which it feels important.
- 59:11You know, I feel like there is other movies of this genre where
- 59:15that is the storyline, like, Oh, I'm lying to get to the top or
- 59:20like to be popular. And though I, it seems like
- 59:25that's not really what Natasha is trying to do, though she does
- 59:27get a friend out of it. It's like she's lying because
- 59:31she has these big dreams that she wishes were true, which is
- 59:35maybe what actually is the commonality between her and
- 59:37Brittany. Right, absolutely think it is
- 59:40that they both have dreams beyond this.
- 59:42Town. This town.
- 59:43Yeah. And so they go about it in
- 59:44different ways. Like Natasha's is backwards,
- 59:47like changing her path. OK, maybe they were tonight.
- 59:50Maybe it wasn't writers for it. Oh, my gosh.
- 59:52Maybe it was. And Brittany is like looking
- 59:54towards the future. She wants to be a songwriter
- 59:56too. She wants to sing.
- 59:58And so I liked that. Like, there's not.
- 1:00:01They actually do have a genuine friendship.
- 1:00:04And those lies aren't like. They're not actually the
- 1:00:08foundation upon which the friendship is built.
- 1:00:11It's just. The way that they are first able
- 1:00:13to connect, it's like the entry point for her to be like, Oh my
- 1:00:16God, that's so cool that you're from a different place.
- 1:00:18And then they can continue the conversation.
- 1:00:20It's not like, well, my favorite thing about her is that she has
- 1:00:23been to New York. Yeah, and then I'm going to,
- 1:00:26she's going to take me to New York, too.
- 1:00:28No, they actually have like a very pure friendship.
- 1:00:31And it's interesting to watch on screen, like especially a Disney
- 1:00:36Channel movie, to see them be like, wait, friend, kind of
- 1:00:39admit friendship can be tough. You can have, you can start off
- 1:00:42on different feet and you can still work through it in a way
- 1:00:45that's like honest and human. And yeah, it was like a
- 1:00:49interesting, good little road map.
- 1:00:52Yeah, yeah. And ultimately, like,
- 1:00:56ultimately, they come around and both realize that like, they
- 1:00:59have made mistakes. It's not like Britney has been
- 1:01:03totally honest either. Like they've both been dishonest
- 1:01:06in different ways. Yeah, you know, Yeah, They share
- 1:01:08fatal flaws. They do.
- 1:01:10And that's important. And that is the foundation of
- 1:01:13pawn. And that is the foundation of
- 1:01:15pawn fatal flaws, absolutely. And what's ours.
- 1:01:19So listener, go ahead and write in and let us know what you
- 1:01:21think our fatal flaws are. Obviously mine is what I'm not
- 1:01:27even getting. I'm not even going to get into
- 1:01:29it. We're not going to bring it up
- 1:01:30again. We're not.
- 1:01:30I'm not talking again about how I told people I was Jewish when
- 1:01:33I wasn't. We're not talking about that.
- 1:01:36No, the soundtrack was pretty fun.
- 1:01:39Honestly, soundtrack awesome. Great.
- 1:01:41Here is 1 unanswered question that I was trying to figure out
- 1:01:47online that I could. Who is the voice that The Who is
- 1:01:51the voice of Jordan Cahill? Because it's not Taron Killam.
- 1:01:57And apparently I saw somewhere on some Reddit thread there was
- 1:02:02there were rumors that it might have been Drew Seeley, but
- 1:02:05apparently a Redditor do you have Drew Sealy and said, is
- 1:02:09this you in the movie? And he said that ain't me dog.
- 1:02:12That ain't me, dog. So.
- 1:02:15The mystery continues. Yeah, because the rest of the
- 1:02:18track list, you know, we have Hayley Duff, Jesse McCartney, We
- 1:02:21have like, a few other people. And then the the More Than Me
- 1:02:26song, the pop version and the acoustic on Top of the World and
- 1:02:29Make a Wish. Just Jordan Cahill.
- 1:02:32That's interesting. Who's Jordan Cahill?
- 1:02:37Who are you? Where are you?
- 1:02:39I just, wow, that's something I really, really want to get into.
- 1:02:46I really need to know. Oh this is funny.
- 1:02:50No one at SNL knew that Taron Killam starred in Disney Stuck
- 1:02:55in the Suburbs until Miley Cyrus hosted.
- 1:02:58Was he in other Disney Channel original movies?
- 1:03:01I believe he was. Let me let me go to his
- 1:03:04Wikipedia page that I looked at on the ride over here.
- 1:03:08He was in the Amanda Show. OK, so not not Disney, but
- 1:03:17Nickelodeon. Yeah, same universe.
- 1:03:20You know, yeah, totally. Same, same circuit of kids.
- 1:03:24OK, let's see any other. No, he was just, he did Naked
- 1:03:33Gun 33 and one third, The final Insult, which was when he was a
- 1:03:38boy. Then he was in The Amanda Show
- 1:03:42and then he joined Mad TV. Then Wild and Out, Nobody's
- 1:03:48Watching. Then he was in Stuck in the
- 1:03:50Suburbs. And then I yeah, there's, that's
- 1:03:56it. As far as Disney Channel
- 1:03:58original movies. Dang, yeah.
- 1:04:01Honestly, this OK, I'm ready for this take, for you to debate
- 1:04:07this take. Oh my God.
- 1:04:08But does he have the best, the most consistent career out of
- 1:04:15like a Disney Channel? Whoa, you know, like obviously
- 1:04:18he wasn't actually a pop star right when he was playing Jordan
- 1:04:21Cahill. But I feel like to go from being
- 1:04:26a Disney Channel kid, you know, not one of the mains
- 1:04:29necessarily, but still like prominent Disney Channel kid to
- 1:04:33then like end up on SNL, right? That's a pretty you're like
- 1:04:39you're punching in big circuits. Yes, at two different times of
- 1:04:43your own, you know, Yeah, that feels impressive and noteworthy.
- 1:04:47Does does he have the widest range?
- 1:04:49You know what I mean? Because it's like, is he?
- 1:04:52The real star, is he the real star?
- 1:04:54It was right under our noses all along and that is such a Disney
- 1:04:58Channel original movie trope. It it was right in front of me
- 1:05:01all along. And Taron Killam, normal looking
- 1:05:05guy. You too huge.
- 1:05:09We could all be terrible. And truly, why not me?
- 1:05:14He's not better looking than me. He's not better looking than
- 1:05:17you. I'm sorry, but like, we could
- 1:05:18have, I could have been up there.
- 1:05:20I could be up there and be like I'm a pop *.
- 1:05:23You know, I believe that and I believe.
- 1:05:25That, and I'm only saying that in the universe of Stuck in the
- 1:05:28Suburbs, in which Taron Killam can also be a pop star.
- 1:05:32I'm not saying I was destined for it.
- 1:05:34I'm saying if that is true, then this is also true.
- 1:05:38This is also true, yeah. Damn, is it too late for us to
- 1:05:44be pop stars? No, I think the path is clear.
- 1:05:46We have switch phones. Yeah, switch phones.
- 1:05:50First of all, switch phones. I'm gonna leave the studio and
- 1:05:52I'm gonna go drop my phone. And then pat around.
- 1:05:57It'll surely end well for me. Absolutely.
- 1:05:59No, I think genuinely the path is we write a screenplay.
- 1:06:02I don't know if we take it to Disney or if we shoot a bit
- 1:06:04higher. Yeah, we, we maybe see, we, we
- 1:06:08see what kind of material we come up with.
- 1:06:11But the the point is it's, it's not that hard.
- 1:06:15It can't be. That hard.
- 1:06:17That hard and I say that with a lot of love for this movie
- 1:06:19again, to be clear, I feel like I'm really ragging on the plot,
- 1:06:21but I'm like. No, but also it's a perfect
- 1:06:23movie. That's The thing is that we have
- 1:06:25so many notes, but it is also a perfect movie.
- 1:06:28Yeah, yeah. It's just, it's just a fun
- 1:06:31little ride. Yeah, you know, I, I said before
- 1:06:34we started recording, I could watch this every day and I
- 1:06:37really could. I feel like it's just so it's so
- 1:06:40easy to watch, yeah. This is gonna sound.
- 1:06:45This is this is attention. Maybe.
- 1:06:46But you know, when I started reading A Court of Thorn of
- 1:06:50Thorn Roses Agatur, yeah, whatever.
- 1:06:53I was like, I love reading this because it reminds me of Harry
- 1:06:56Potter. Like, it's not even for the
- 1:06:58SMUD. I'm like, it's just it's so the
- 1:07:00lines of good and evil are so clear.
- 1:07:03And you know what side you're there, there.
- 1:07:05I love nuance, but it's so fun to read a book where it's like,
- 1:07:10no, there's not nuance. My guys are the good guys,
- 1:07:13totally. There's no doubt about that.
- 1:07:15Everyone else is evil. My guys are fun, they are funny.
- 1:07:19We just love each other. Like you feel like you're a part
- 1:07:21of the gang, and that's kind of what, again, not really a clear
- 1:07:24villain in this movie, but I like that the stakes are low but
- 1:07:28obvious. It's just so.
- 1:07:31Absolutely. Pandering.
- 1:07:32It's not, you know, but it's clear.
- 1:07:35It's something that, like, the stakes are so low that truly
- 1:07:39anyone could put themselves in that position.
- 1:07:42They're like, you know what, life is kind of boring in my
- 1:07:45town and that's it. Yeah.
- 1:07:48It's like life could be less boring.
- 1:07:51And those are the stakes. And this old house that my mom
- 1:07:55wants to preserve, like those are the stakes.
- 1:07:58And I love that. I love that.
- 1:08:00It's like, and for for Jordan, it's truly just like integrity.
- 1:08:04Those are the stakes. It's like, you know, either I
- 1:08:07live out my true artistry or I am a pop sensation.
- 1:08:11It's kind of like, all right. Doesn't don't really see a
- 1:08:13downside there. And it seems like a win win.
- 1:08:16Yeah. And it seems like again, Taryn
- 1:08:18the actor, when facing that decision from a character
- 1:08:23perspective, the actor himself, seemingly Taryn chose the path
- 1:08:27of integrity. He really did.
- 1:08:29He didn't become a pops and he didn't really.
- 1:08:30I don't feel like he sold out, like he pursued art his whole
- 1:08:35life long, built a thriving career like.
- 1:08:38Who among us will want that? Right.
- 1:08:42Yeah, Yeah. Well, I really think, I think
- 1:08:44it's a beautiful movie, beautiful message, easy to
- 1:08:47watch. The even the, I mean, yeah, it's
- 1:08:51like even the sort of like auteur version of his pop songs
- 1:08:58are perfect pop songs. It's entertaining as hell.
- 1:09:03And I just think that everyone should watch Stuck in the
- 1:09:06Suburbs tonight. It's golden.
- 1:09:08It's golden, yeah. And I know that we're supposed
- 1:09:12to not endorse Disney or Disney Plus, but this whole month we
- 1:09:16have been watching Disney Channel original movies and it
- 1:09:19is because of nostalgia and not because I love CBS.
- 1:09:22You don't make them like they used to.
- 1:09:24Girl, that is so true. And until we start making them
- 1:09:27again, and then we're going to make them just like they used.
- 1:09:29To resurgence that is the resurgence.
- 1:09:33Well, if you continue down this path of watching D coms, you
- 1:09:39should try to figure out when they like.
- 1:09:41What was the last great Disney Channel original movie?
- 1:09:45I don't know the answer to that question.
- 1:09:47That is. That's a question bigger than
- 1:09:51all of us, really. Listeners, write in with what
- 1:09:54you think was the last rate. Great.
- 1:09:57Yeah. I think it.
- 1:09:58Probably my guess is gonna be it was High School Musical, but I
- 1:10:03also I think that there were some some Disney Channel
- 1:10:07original movies that came out after that I just frankly did
- 1:10:11not see. Yeah, well, because the other
- 1:10:14thing I'll admit is is stuck in the suburbs, capital G Great.
- 1:10:19Like you know it. It's perhaps not it.
- 1:10:23It's that it belongs in this larger collection and genre and
- 1:10:29time of just like easy, awesome, simple, fun, relatable films.
- 1:10:36Yeah, low budget, Yeah. But it's like, I love that it
- 1:10:40was low, but you know. It's fun.
- 1:10:41Too. And so, I don't know, maybe with
- 1:10:43High School Musical like 3 or whatever, they got so high, but
- 1:10:47or seemingly, yeah. And that's where they lost some
- 1:10:50of their greatness, because they lost simplicity.
- 1:10:52I know, I know. That's why they can't.
- 1:10:55You can't have like, you can't turn your Disney Channel stars
- 1:10:59into real stars because then they want real grown up money.
- 1:11:04Oh no, we've become the manager. Oh no.
- 1:11:06Oh, no, That's what happens, folks, when you age.
- 1:11:10I'm looking. OK, I'm looking at a Wikipedia
- 1:11:12page with a list of all of the Disney Channel original movies,
- 1:11:15and I never saw Camp Rock, but I know that a lot of people love.
- 1:11:18It I mean another movie that I would say is like fantastic, but
- 1:11:25then you rewatch it and you're like, sorry, wait, what can you
- 1:11:28explain this to me? Sure, so she can't go to camp,
- 1:11:32but she there's again a lot of plot holes.
- 1:11:34Sure, sure, sure. And just, you know, wild, wild
- 1:11:36things, yeah, happen. But that's kind of what makes
- 1:11:39them great, right? He said.
- 1:11:41That was so. That was 2008.
- 1:11:42The Camp Rock came out and a lot of the rest of these.
- 1:11:46I mean, I hate to say it, I do not.
- 1:11:49I've never met them. Sorry to this man.
- 1:11:51I've never met these movies. Yeah, you know, so I cannot say
- 1:11:58objectively what the best the last great Disney Channel
- 1:12:02original movie was, but I am going to say for me it's High
- 1:12:06School Musical probably. Wait, that's 2006?
- 1:12:10So that's 2000. 6 jump in was good, Corbin blue was in there.
- 1:12:14Oh yeah, I forgot which is 2. Never saw that.
- 1:12:17Minutemen. Oh freak, I forget what that's
- 1:12:19about. This one is a science fiction
- 1:12:22movie. Interesting.
- 1:12:30It's about a couple of best friends.
- 1:12:31Classic. I mean, that is the beginning of
- 1:12:33every Disney Channel. Movie look.
- 1:12:34And that's all I need. I'm in, I'm in.
- 1:12:37But I do wonder. Like I wonder, do do kids today
- 1:12:43watch Disney Channel original movies?
- 1:12:45I don't know. I don't know either.
- 1:12:49I'll have to. I'll have to ask my niece.
- 1:12:51I'm. Like who to ask?
- 1:12:52Do you know? I know.
- 1:12:53I don't know any kids. I know it's tough.
- 1:12:55I don't know. I don't know a ton of kids.
- 1:12:57You know what? I'll ask my friend Annie's kids.
- 1:13:00They're like, they're like 7 and 10.
- 1:13:03I feel like that's the perfect, perfect ages.
- 1:13:05OK, I'll ask them and I'll get back to all of you.
- 1:13:07Don't worry. Is there anything else that we
- 1:13:09didn't discuss today that we must discuss about stuck in the
- 1:13:12suburbs or really anything that's.
- 1:13:14On the line. Anything you've been lying
- 1:13:16about? Sam, I wish that I I wish that I
- 1:13:19lied. Maybe I should lie.
- 1:13:20More I know I really wish that I lied more too yeah, I don't do
- 1:13:24I? This will shock you, but I don't
- 1:13:26really do it anymore. And you know, for better or
- 1:13:30worse, Yeah, for better or worse, I kind of grew out of
- 1:13:33lying or. Not, you know.
- 1:13:35Maybe. Yeah, that could be fun.
- 1:13:37Could be fun. No, I feel like we we touched on
- 1:13:40the movie. I really think we did too.
- 1:13:42Touched on everything, yeah. Yeah, I mean, look, we've been
- 1:13:46here for the runtime of the movie, So what else could be
- 1:13:49said? But everybody, please follow the

- 1:14:50I love, love that. I haven't seen it in a long
- 1:14:52time, but I am going to watch it tonight after this with my
- 1:14:56friends. Been dying to watch it and I'm
- 1:14:58like wow, that can be a whole other conversation.
- 1:15:01Probably incredible. Was that a Disney Channel or a
- 1:15:04Channel movie? Or no, it was Disney, but not a
- 1:15:08not a calm. OK, I believe.
- 1:15:11OK, gotcha. So not the last great one.
- 1:15:13No, but but a great one, a great one, a great one nonetheless.
