- 0:00Um, okay. So, here's here's a question
- 0:02for you guys. Uh, you know what?
- 0:03Something I guess this is more of a
- 0:04rhetorical question. You know what's
- 0:06something that I wasn't expecting uh
- 0:08when I moved to Georgia? And I know a
- 0:10couple weeks ago I said all the bugs,
- 0:12but this is going to be a different one.
- 0:13Uh, this is weird. And maybe it's just
- 0:15because I grew up in a city, but I was
- 0:18surprised about all the like ditches and
- 0:21ponds and like little hills that just
- 0:23like drop off like 20 ft off the road.
- 0:27and occasionally cars just like drive
- 0:29off them. It's kind of wild. Like it's
- 0:32amazing the way that it drains all of
- 0:33that stuff. So, so I've said before I
- 0:35grew up in California. I grew up in Los
- 0:36Angeles. And so in Los Angeles, we just
- 0:38don't have that, right? Like in order to
- 0:40do drainage, um they they have this
- 0:43whole like system of underground drains
- 0:46that uh are and like sewers and stuff
- 0:48that just like pull all the water into
- 0:51these like underground tunnels and then
- 0:53run it out into I don't know whatever
- 0:55the ocean or something like that. My
- 0:56guess is that Atlanta has something
- 0:58similar, but like out here not so much.
- 1:01And so in LA at least, it was not a very
- 1:03good system. This whole like drainage
- 1:05system that we had because it felt like
- 1:07when I was growing up, uh the street
- 1:09that I lived on, every time that it
- 1:11rained, it would flood on one end of my
- 1:13street. And I don't know if you guys
- 1:15have seen the 2002 lime green VW Beetle
- 1:18that I drive, but that thing going
- 1:19through a puddle will be like, I'm not
- 1:22made to do that. So, it's uh it's been a
- 1:25mess. But anyway, when I was in high
- 1:27school, uh me and a group of friends of
- 1:29mine, uh we found one of those big
- 1:32underground drain tunnels. It was like
- 1:3420 feet wide that opened up into the LA
- 1:36River and ran out to the sea. And so we
- 1:38decided, being like 15-year-old dudes,
- 1:41that we were going to go and explore
- 1:43this underground tunnel. We were going
- 1:44to take flashlights and wear rain boots
- 1:46and just like go and see where this
- 1:49underground tunnel went, right? And it
- 1:53ran for like three or four miles just
- 1:55straight underground like under streets
- 1:57with cars going overhead. Uh and there
- 1:59was probably like 2 in of water and
- 2:01slime just like the whole way until it
- 2:04finally like came out in a park on the
- 2:06other side of Los Angeles. It was
- 2:08totally awesome. And I remember this one
- 2:11time when I went out there with my
- 2:12friends and I was beefing with them and
- 2:15it I was probably in the wrong. And so
- 2:16my friends decided when we were on the
- 2:18other side of this tunnel that they were
- 2:20just going to go back without me because
- 2:22I was like in a mood and not wanting to
- 2:25listen to them. So they just dipped out
- 2:26and left without me. And uh they had
- 2:29left me one of the flashlights. And as I
- 2:31started hiking back through this tunnel,
- 2:33like 3 or four miles, we're talking like
- 2:35an hour, hour plus of walking through
- 2:37the dark. Uh and as I'm going the
- 2:40flashlight, the battery on my flashlight
- 2:42gives out. And so for the whole like
- 2:45probably 40 minutes of the rest of this
- 2:47this walk through this tunnel, it's just
- 2:50pitch total darkness. And I had to just
- 2:54like feel my hand along the wall and
- 2:56along the like cobwebs and cockroaches
- 2:59until I finally made my way out. And
- 3:02when I saw the light at the end of the
- 3:04tunnel, you guys have heard that phrase,
- 3:05right? The light at the end of the
- 3:06tunnel. when I saw the literal light at
- 3:08the end of the literal tunnel under LA,
- 3:12uh, I was just like locked in on that
- 3:14light the whole time until I made it out
- 3:16because the light told me where I needed
- 3:19to go. So, maybe some of you already
- 3:22have a sense of where I'm going with
- 3:23this. Maybe some of you are like, I got
- 3:25no idea why you're you're in on this.
- 3:28Um, but if you haven't been here in the
- 3:30last couple of weeks, we just started a
- 3:31couple of weeks ago a new series that
- 3:33we're calling I am who I am. And for the
- 3:36next seven weeks, or I guess it's like
- 3:37six more weeks now, uh we're going to be
- 3:39looking at seven statements that Jesus
- 3:42makes about his identity and mission in
- 3:46the Gospel of John. And these are seven
- 3:48metaphors that Jesus uses to talk about
- 3:50who he is and how he relates to us and
- 3:53what he came to do on the earth. And so
- 3:57in the first week, and my challenge
- 3:58throughout this whole series has been to
- 4:00memorize these different statements, but
- 4:02the first week of the series, we talked
- 4:03about the name of God. Do any of you
- 4:05remember what it was?
- 4:08Nobody. I am. It was. Yeah, it was I am
- 4:10who I am. Right. So, the name of Were
- 4:13you Were you?
- 4:15>> What is it?
- 4:19>> All right. I don't think I told you that
- 4:21story. But anyway, so I am who I am.
- 4:22It's Yahweh, which means I am who I am.
- 4:26Yeah. So that's the the first statement
- 4:27that Jesus or or rather before Jesus
- 4:29even makes any of these statements the
- 4:31thing that we need to understand is that
- 4:32he is saying with each one of these I am
- 4:35statements he's saying I am God. Right?
- 4:38And then this last week we jumped into
- 4:40the first of the I am statements. Do any
- 4:42of you remember which one that one was?
- 4:43Sophia.
- 4:45>> He said I am the bread of life. Which
- 4:47tells us what about Jesus?
- 4:51Samuel
- 4:52>> he's our provider. that he nourishes us
- 4:55spiritually, that he feeds us
- 4:57spiritually, that he's the nourishment
- 4:59that we need, who satisfies our hunger
- 5:01to know God, right? And the emphasis of
- 5:04I am the bread of life is that we depend
- 5:07on Jesus the way the people in Israel
- 5:10depended on God to feed them through the
- 5:13wilderness. And so, like I said a second
- 5:16ago, my challenge throughout this whole
- 5:17series is for you to memorize each one
- 5:18of these statements. So Sophia just said
- 5:20it, "I am the bread of life." What was
- 5:22the first one?
- 5:24You can do better than that. What was
- 5:25the first one?
- 5:28>> Thank you, Asher. And the second one
- 5:30that we're going to be talking about
- 5:31right now is I am the light of the
- 5:34world. Hit me with that one.
- 5:38>> Thank you. I am the light of the world.
- 5:41So, that is the I am statement that
- 5:42Jesus makes that comes out of John 8.
- 5:45It's in verses 12 through 20. And so,
- 5:48we've got Bibles over here. Those NLTs
- 5:50are what I'm going to be teaching out
- 5:51of. But if you were here two weeks ago,
- 5:53we already looked at a passage a little
- 5:55bit later in John chapter 8. And at the
- 5:58end of John 8, Jesus has gotten the
- 6:00religious leaders in Israel so mad at
- 6:03him that they've decided to pick up
- 6:05stones and they're going to try and beat
- 6:06Jesus to death with him. And this
- 6:08statement that Jesus makes, I am the
- 6:11light of the world, takes place during
- 6:14one of the really important Jewish
- 6:16festivals that they had that they
- 6:18celebrated in the Jewish calendar. The
- 6:20festival is called the feast of
- 6:22tabernacles or in Hebrew it's called
- 6:25sukkot. So if you have any Jewish
- 6:26friends they actually still celebrate
- 6:28this feast of tabernacles sukkot today.
- 6:31And a tabernacle is basically just a big
- 6:33tent, right? And uh so yeah they still
- 6:35celebrate the feast of tabernacles
- 6:37today. And every year during the feast
- 6:39of tabernacles what the Jewish people
- 6:41were supposed to do is build these tents
- 6:43and spend the whole week living in these
- 6:45tents outside of their houses. And it
- 6:48was a way of them remembering how during
- 6:50the wilderness wandering that their
- 6:52ancestors had to wander uh for 40 years
- 6:54in the desert that the people of Israel
- 6:57lived in tents and God fed them out of
- 7:00heaven. Right? So last week we talked
- 7:01last week we talked about God feeding
- 7:03the Israelites with the bread from
- 7:05heaven. And now this next statement
- 7:08takes place during the feast where they
- 7:10celebrate or they where they remember
- 7:12living in these tents. And during that
- 7:15whole period of wandering the
- 7:16wilderness, uh the Old Testament says
- 7:18that the
- 7:22Hello. Hello. There we go. I was reading
- 7:24this this quote from like 2,000 years
- 7:26ago where it talked about how the light
- 7:28in these in on this lamp was so bright
- 7:32in the temple in Jerusalem that it lit
- 7:34up the entire city that anywhere that
- 7:37you were in the entire city, you could
- 7:39see the light on the mountain from these
- 7:42lamps on the at the temple. And so when
- 7:44Jesus is speaking to these crowds, the
- 7:47statement that he's going to make about
- 7:48himself, he's standing in the courtyard
- 7:51in the temple, right? right on this
- 7:53mountaintop that's on the edge of town
- 7:56and right underneath these big huge
- 7:58telephone polesiz lamps that are shining
- 8:01bright enough to light up the whole
- 8:03city. And so standing right there, Jesus
- 8:05says this, John 8:12, he says, "I am the
- 8:09light of the world. If you follow me,
- 8:13you won't have to walk in darkness
- 8:15because you will have the light that
- 8:17leads to life." Now, do you guys
- 8:19remember how last week we talked about
- 8:22how the miracle of Jesus feeding the
- 8:245000 was meant to point back to the
- 8:28wilderness wandering? And it was meant
- 8:30to point to Jesus as the true bread that
- 8:33God sends from heaven, right? We talked
- 8:34about that. Well, Jesus is kind of doing
- 8:36the same thing here, right? He says that
- 8:38the lamps in the the city, the lamps in
- 8:41the temple are meant to point backward
- 8:44to that time in the wilderness wandering
- 8:46with the pillar of fire and all that
- 8:48stuff that lit up the nation. But it's
- 8:50meant to point forward to Jesus as the
- 8:53one who lights up not just the nation of
- 8:55Israel, but he lights up the entire
- 8:58world. I've been talking throughout this
- 9:00series that that Jesus is making these
- 9:02big bold claims about himself. And in
- 9:05this one, the big bold claim that Jesus
- 9:08is making is to connect his identity to
- 9:12the pillar of fire in the Old Testament.
- 9:14He's connecting his identity to the
- 9:17literal glory of God that told the
- 9:19Israelites where they're supposed to go.
- 9:22Jesus is saying that just like the
- 9:24pillar of fire told them where they
- 9:26should go as they were wandering through
- 9:27the wilderness, he says,"I am the light
- 9:30of the world that tells the whole world
- 9:34where it's supposed to go." And that
- 9:36idea that there is a way of light and a
- 9:39way of darkness is actually a super
- 9:42important theme that shows up over and
- 9:44over and over again in John's gospel.
- 9:48that idea of light, John connects it to
- 9:50the kingdom of life, the kingdom uh that
- 9:53Jesus has invited all of us into and
- 9:56then he connects darkness to the to the
- 9:58the kingdom of this world. The the the
- 10:01life that Jesus is bringing us out of.
- 10:04And so right there at the beginning of
- 10:06John chapter 1, and I'm not going to
- 10:08pull it up on the the slide, but at the
- 10:10beginning of John chapter 1, he says
- 10:11this. He says the word, talking about
- 10:13Jesus, he says the word gave life to
- 10:17everything that was created and his
- 10:19life, Jesus's life brought light to
- 10:22everyone. The light shines in the
- 10:24darkness and the darkness can never
- 10:26extinguish it. The whole gospel of John
- 10:29starts off by telling us that before
- 10:32Jesus was in the world, the whole world
- 10:34was captured by darkness. The whole
- 10:37world was corrupted by sin and rebellion
- 10:40against God. And when Jesus arrived on
- 10:42earth, it says the powers of darkness
- 10:45and sin in the world were opposed to
- 10:48Jesus. Were opposed to the light that he
- 10:50brings, but that they can't overcome
- 10:52him. Later on in John chapter 3, I still
- 10:56don't have a slide for this one, but he
- 10:57picks up that idea again, and it comes
- 10:59out right after this verse that
- 11:01everybody has memorized. You guys know
- 11:02John 3:16, right? A lot of you do. So,
- 11:04this comes a couple verses after John
- 11:063:16. It's in 3:19. He says, "God's
- 11:09light," meaning himself. "God's light
- 11:11came into the world, but people loved
- 11:14the darkness more than the light, for
- 11:17their actions were evil. All who do evil
- 11:20hate the light and refuse to go near it
- 11:22for fear that their sins will be
- 11:24exposed. But those who do what is right
- 11:27come to the light so others can see that
- 11:30they are doing what God wants."
- 11:33That's Jesus speaking in his own words
- 11:36about his mission on earth. He says that
- 11:39in Jesus coming to earth, the light has
- 11:42come to defeat the darkness. And he says
- 11:46that the way people respond to Jesus
- 11:49tells us whether they have a heart
- 11:51turned toward God or turned away from
- 11:53him.
- 11:54And the idea of this passage, the idea
- 11:57that Jesus has about how people respond
- 12:00to him is that people who reject Jesus,
- 12:02people who turn away from the light
- 12:04aren't rejecting Jesus because they feel
- 12:07like the gospel message isn't like
- 12:09compelling enough or because it doesn't
- 12:11seem like the evidence is there or
- 12:12something like that. It's what Jesus is
- 12:14saying is that the reason people don't
- 12:17come to the light is because they love
- 12:19their sin.
- 12:22Do you love your sin?
- 12:25I can think of like example after
- 12:27example of people who have said to me,
- 12:29"Man, I've been just having doubts about
- 12:31Christianity or I don't know if really
- 12:33Jesus really rose from the dead or or
- 12:35any of those things." And I feel like
- 12:37every single time I've been able to say,
- 12:39"Who did you start dating recently? Who
- 12:42did you start sleeping with? What
- 12:44friends did you start hanging out with
- 12:45who are pointing you in that direction?"
- 12:48Like for example, I had a roommate when
- 12:49I was in college who came with me to the
- 12:52Easter service at our church one year.
- 12:54And then the next year I tried to invite
- 12:55that same friend to come to church and
- 12:57he was like, "I don't know, man. I'm
- 12:59just like really trying to figure my
- 13:00faith out. I feel like I should figure
- 13:02things out before I go back to church."
- 13:04And you know what had happened from the
- 13:06previous year to that year? My roommate
- 13:08got a girlfriend. Like that's what it
- 13:10was. Do you love your sin?
- 13:15I think that people who love their sin
- 13:17will react in two ways to the light of
- 13:20Jesus. Either they will walk away the
- 13:23way that my roommate in college did, or
- 13:25else they will start to pick and choose
- 13:27what rules they want to follow and what
- 13:30rules they don't want to follow until
- 13:31pretty soon they've made like a
- 13:33cardboard cutout Jesus that just
- 13:35basically looks the way that they want
- 13:37it to look. That looks like them.
- 13:40When Jesus says, "I am the light," he's
- 13:43saying that he is the light that shines
- 13:46into a world that is darkened by sin. He
- 13:48says that he is the light that allows us
- 13:51to see clearly and without bumping into
- 13:54walls or like fall down the stairs or
- 13:57something like that. Y'all, if we try to
- 13:59pick and choose which of Jesus's rules
- 14:02we want to follow and which one we which
- 14:04ones we don't, he says we're still
- 14:07living in darkness.
- 14:09If we say like, "Okay, yeah, I'm going
- 14:11to follow do not murder and do not
- 14:13steal, but a little gossip, that's not
- 14:15such a big deal." Gossip will ruin your
- 14:19friendships and it will destroy your
- 14:21character.
- 14:22If we say, "Okay, for sure. I'm not
- 14:24going to do like, you know, do not
- 14:26commit adultery or whatever, but like
- 14:28sex before marriage is not a big deal."
- 14:31Sexual sin is an act. The Bible says
- 14:33it's an act of evil against yourself,
- 14:35against your partner, against God,
- 14:38against your future spouse.
- 14:40If we ignore what the Bible says about
- 14:42possessions,
- 14:44then yeah, you might get rich. And then
- 14:46you also might find out the hard way
- 14:48what Jesus says about like rich men and
- 14:51camels and eyes of needles.
- 14:55It wasn't until I began to give my life
- 14:58over to God and really try to walk in
- 15:00the light of Jesus that I began to
- 15:03realize all the parts of my life that
- 15:05are not surrendered to him.
- 15:07God began to show me that the way that I
- 15:10try to like compare myself to other
- 15:12people just feeds jealousy and it steals
- 15:15my ability to be satisfied in God. He
- 15:19showed me that when I try to like hold
- 15:21grudges against people who have done me
- 15:22dirty in the past that it comes out of
- 15:24pride and it steals my ability to walk
- 15:28in freedom and forgiveness.
- 15:31I once had a friend ask me when I was
- 15:33telling him about how, you know, I was
- 15:35I'm a Christian and I'm trying to live
- 15:36my life the way Jesus calls me to in the
- 15:38Bible. He asked me, "Well, what do you
- 15:40do when you read something in the Bible
- 15:42that you don't agree with?" Because that
- 15:45happens, right?
- 15:47And I said to my friend,"Well, that's
- 15:48the difference between you and me. See,
- 15:49when I read something in the Bible that
- 15:51I don't agree with, or rather, when you
- 15:53read something that you don't agree with
- 15:54in the Bible, you assume the Bible must
- 15:56be wrong. When I read something in the
- 15:58Bible that I don't agree with, I assume
- 16:00I must be wrong."
- 16:02The way we respond to the light tells us
- 16:05which way our hearts are pointing. And
- 16:08we're going to see that in the religious
- 16:09leaders in this passage, right? So verse
- 16:1113, right after Jesus has made this
- 16:13statement, I am the light of the world.
- 16:14It says, 'The Pharisees replied, "You
- 16:17are making these claims about yourself.
- 16:19Such testimony is not valid." Jesus told
- 16:22them, "These claims are valid, even
- 16:24though I'm making them about myself, for
- 16:26I know where I came from and where I'm
- 16:28going. But you don't know this about me.
- 16:31You judge me by human standards, but I
- 16:34don't judge anyone. And if I did, my
- 16:36judgment would be correct in every
- 16:38respect because I am not alone. The
- 16:42Father who sent me is with me. Your own
- 16:44law says that if two people agree about
- 16:46something, their witness is accepted as
- 16:48fact. While I am one witness, and the
- 16:51father who sent me is the other. Where
- 16:54is your father? They asked. Jesus
- 16:56answered, since you don't know who I am,
- 16:59you don't know who my father is. If you
- 17:01knew me, you would also know my father.
- 17:04Jesus made these statements while he was
- 17:06teaching in the section of the temple
- 17:08known as the treasury, but he was not
- 17:09arrested because his time has not yet
- 17:11come. And just in case you're about to
- 17:13fact check me because you were like,
- 17:14"Hey, you said it was in a courtyard,
- 17:16not the treasury." The treasury is in
- 17:18the courtyard. It's where they kept the
- 17:19big offering boxes in the temple. So
- 17:22anyway, Jesus makes this big bold claim
- 17:25about himself that he is the light of
- 17:28the world. And the religious leaders
- 17:29push back on him. They tell him, "Hey,
- 17:32nobody ought to believe this Jesus guy
- 17:34because Jesus is just arguing for his
- 17:36own behalf."
- 17:38And what's crazy is if you read John's
- 17:40gospel from the beginning, basically the
- 17:43entire gospel up until this point, John
- 17:45has been pointing all over the place at
- 17:47all of the different witnesses to who
- 17:50Jesus is, that Jesus is the son of God,
- 17:53right? He points to John the Baptist. He
- 17:55points to the Jewish scriptures. He
- 17:56points to God the Father. He points to
- 17:58the Holy Spirit coming down like a dove
- 18:00during Jesus's baptism, right? He points
- 18:03to Jesus's own miracles. all of these
- 18:06witnesses speaking with one voice that
- 18:09Jesus is the son of God.
- 18:13And when the religious leaders try to
- 18:15argue about whether Jesus's statements
- 18:18are valid or not, whether they're legit
- 18:20or not, even though there's all these
- 18:23other witnesses that Jesus had that that
- 18:25have been pointing to Jesus's identity,
- 18:28the religious leaders are showing by
- 18:31their response to Jesus, whether they're
- 18:34in the light or not. And Jesus argues
- 18:37back, right? He says to them, "You judge
- 18:39me by human standards. Like all you know
- 18:42is that I'm that dude Jesus who came
- 18:44from Nazareth in Galilee. But I know who
- 18:47I am. I know that I was with God back in
- 18:51the beginning before time started. I
- 18:53know where I'm going after my time on
- 18:56earth is done. Jesus knew what he came
- 19:01to earth to do. It's not like one day
- 19:03Jesus was just like back in Galilee and
- 19:06he's chilling in his carpenter shop and
- 19:08then one day he's like, "Holy smokes, I
- 19:10can turn water into wine. That's crazy.
- 19:11I must be the son of God." Like that's
- 19:13not how it happened. Jesus knew who he
- 19:16was. He knew what his mission was. Not
- 19:20to judge the world. Not yet. Not to
- 19:22condemn the world, but to save it. He
- 19:24says it right there in verse 15. He
- 19:26says, "You judge me by human standards,
- 19:30but I don't judge anyone."
- 19:32And I think as we start to to wind down,
- 19:36I think that people can sometimes misuse
- 19:38this verse and a couple of other verses
- 19:40to try and argue, well, that that means
- 19:42that my behavior doesn't matter. Right?
- 19:44Jesus just said, "I don't judge anyone,
- 19:46so that means God doesn't care about my
- 19:48sin. So Josh, you should be quiet. You
- 19:50shouldn't care about my sin either."
- 19:53After all, didn't Jesus say, "Hey, do
- 19:55not judge others and you will not be
- 19:57judged." Didn't Jesus say, "God sent his
- 19:59son into the world not to judge the
- 20:01world, but to save it?" Like, that's
- 20:02true. Both of those things are quotes
- 20:05from Jesus, straight out of the mouth of
- 20:07Jesus. And that is why I encourage you
- 20:10now and every single week, I encourage
- 20:12you to be reading not just the little
- 20:14parts of the Bible that we're looking at
- 20:16on Sunday nights, but to be reading the
- 20:18whole passages in context. Like I
- 20:21challenge you to be doing that because
- 20:23the Bible I don't know if you knew this
- 20:24but the Bible is a very long book.
- 20:28It is long enough that you can pull a
- 20:30handful of verses out from different
- 20:31parts of the Bible and get them to
- 20:33support any false idea you want. Y'all,
- 20:36the only way for you and me to know the
- 20:39Bible and to know the God that is in the
- 20:42Bible is to give it the time it requires
- 20:45to read things in context and to study
- 20:48deeply. And unfortunately, that means
- 20:51it's going to take a lot more effort
- 20:53than just reading like the couple of
- 20:55verses that we throw up on screen or,
- 20:57you know, reading verses on Pinterest or
- 20:59like the verse of the day on Uver,
- 21:01right? But I promise you that it is so
- 21:05worth it. Now, it is true, right? What I
- 21:08just said, Jesus says several times in
- 21:10John's gospel, he says, "I did not come
- 21:12to judge." That's true. But if we read
- 21:14that and we think it doesn't matter how
- 21:16I live, then we'll end up using those
- 21:19verses to teach the exact opposite thing
- 21:21that Jesus is trying to say. Like the
- 21:24whole point of Jesus saying, "I'm the
- 21:25light of the world is him saying there
- 21:28is a way of light and a way of darkness.
- 21:30There is a right way to live and a wrong
- 21:32way to live." Right? So if you say,
- 21:34"Hey, Jesus says I don't judge anyone.
- 21:37It doesn't matter if I, you know,
- 21:39gossip. It doesn't matter if I'm
- 21:41sleeping with my significant other. It
- 21:43doesn't matter if I use chat GBT on my
- 21:45English paper. Like none of that
- 21:46matters. Well, that is a sign that you
- 21:49might be still be in darkness.
- 21:53Jesus absolutely made distinctions
- 21:55between right and wrong. And as his
- 21:58followers, we are called to live
- 22:00rightly. Not in order to like earn God's
- 22:04favor, not in order to earn a spot in
- 22:06heaven, nothing like that. But it is out
- 22:07of a desire to live into the kingdom
- 22:11life that Jesus has invited us into.
- 22:15So I'm going to close in just a sec. And
- 22:17Pete, you can come back up. I'm going to
- 22:19close in just a sec, but I just want to
- 22:21spend a minute or two tonight talking
- 22:23about that idea of judgment. Okay. It's
- 22:26actually funny. Jeremiah and I were
- 22:28talking about this uh a little while
- 22:29ago, justice and judgment and stuff. So,
- 22:31the Bible has a lot to say about
- 22:33judgment. And just how like like how
- 22:35last week I said that sometimes we can
- 22:37push away uncomfortable ideas that the
- 22:40Bible is like really straightforward
- 22:41about. I think that we can sometimes get
- 22:44nervous about that idea of judgment. So,
- 22:47we're going to talk about it for a
- 22:48minute. All right. So when Jesus is
- 22:51speaking in John chapter 8, he's
- 22:53speaking to a people who rightly
- 22:55understand that like the world is
- 22:57fundamentally messed up and that God
- 23:00needs to to fix it. That God is going to
- 23:02bring his judgment to the world. There's
- 23:05this Old Testament idea about this this
- 23:09day that was in the future that was
- 23:10coming that was called the day of the
- 23:12Lord. And when the day of the Lord came,
- 23:14God was going to bring judgment and
- 23:16condemnation for wicked people. and he
- 23:19was going to bring rescue and
- 23:20deliverance for the people of God. And
- 23:22when Jesus comes and he says, "I'm not
- 23:24here to judge." What he's saying is not,
- 23:26"Y'all, there's never going to be a
- 23:28judgment. Don't worry, we can party."
- 23:30What he's saying is that what Jesus came
- 23:32to earth to do the first time was not to
- 23:35bring judgment, but to bring salvation
- 23:38to anyone who would believe in Jesus.
- 23:41Jesus came not to bring the judgment but
- 23:44to take the judgment on himself so that
- 23:48anybody and everybody who would look to
- 23:50Jesus as the only one who can make them
- 23:53right with God would not be condemned.
- 23:57But the Bible is like super duper clear
- 23:59that there is still a judgment coming
- 24:02for the world. And when that judgment
- 24:04comes, it's going to be good and perfect
- 24:08and right.
- 24:10God is going to destroy all wickedness
- 24:13once and for all. And the Bible does not
- 24:16get scared of saying like, "Yeah, that
- 24:18also includes wicked people."
- 24:21Honestly, that judgment includes or
- 24:24should include you and me too because of
- 24:27our rebellion against God and everyone
- 24:31else in the world who will not throw
- 24:33themselves on Jesus to save them. And
- 24:37it's weird for me to be saying this and
- 24:38having like Pete playing in the
- 24:40background because it feels like very
- 24:41light and airy, right? And I think
- 24:43people will sometimes hear that and
- 24:44they'll be like, "Man, that sounds so
- 24:45harsh, right? Like why would God condemn
- 24:48someone if they just told a lie a couple
- 24:49of times? Like would God really send
- 24:52someone to hell because they stole a
- 24:53piece of gum one time?"
- 24:55But here's my thing. I don't actually
- 24:58think that that type of person exists.
- 25:01When I was 16 and I was barely
- 25:04Christian, I thought that I was a pretty
- 25:05good person. But the longer that I have
- 25:08followed Jesus, the longer that I have
- 25:10been a follower of Christ, the more of
- 25:12my life that he has transformed, the
- 25:14deeper I've realized that my sin and my
- 25:17wickedness goes. Like every layer of
- 25:20trash that the Holy Spirit clears off
- 25:22the top of my heart, I'm like, "Wow,
- 25:24there's like another layer of sin and
- 25:26rebellion underneath that."
- 25:29I remember I talked to Pastor Jay about
- 25:30this a couple weeks ago and he was he
- 25:32was like that that is exactly my
- 25:34experience too. Like every serious
- 25:36Christian I've ever met has said that.
- 25:39And what I've realized is the worse that
- 25:41I've realized that I am the more that
- 25:43I've realized that I deserve God's
- 25:46justice and judgment and condemnation
- 25:48for my sins, the more I've realized just
- 25:52how glorious and perfect and loving God
- 25:56is.
- 25:58Because all of my sin and all of my
- 26:01shame, the perfect son of God, let
- 26:05himself be nailed to a tree to rescue me
- 26:10and to rescue you and to rescue anyone
- 26:14who would put their trust in him in a
- 26:17crucified king. So if we get scared
- 26:20about the idea that that there is
- 26:22judgment,
- 26:23then I think that we will never
- 26:25understand the depth and the width and
- 26:28the height of how much God loves each
- 26:32one of you. Does that make sense?
- 26:36Sweet. No response. Let's pray.
