- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett on a night where New
- 0:08Speaker 1: York City just could not win today. Whether it was
- 0:11Speaker 1: the plane flying overhead saying, hey, John Mayra fixed this
- 0:15Speaker 1: dumpster fire known as the New York Giants, who are
- 0:18Speaker 1: I can't believe I'm saying this two and eleven on
- 0:22Speaker 1: their way to maybe the top draft pick in all
- 0:24Speaker 1: the NFL. And then the Jets blowing their game against
- 0:27Speaker 1: the Dolphins today. Oh, and the Rangers at Masion Square
- 0:30Speaker 1: Garden losing seven to five to Seattle. I guess you'd
- 0:35Speaker 1: say one group of New Yorkers got a big win
- 0:37Speaker 1: today while another group is eating their sour grapes. I
- 0:43Speaker 1: hate to say it, but the Yankees losing out on
- 0:47Speaker 1: Juan Soto, and yet Soto stays in New York as
- 0:52Speaker 1: the Mets swoop in with a fifteen year. That's my fiance.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Keep in mind, I'm a Yankee, Banji's a Met fan.
- 1:01Speaker 1: The Mets we've been and get a fifteen year, seven
- 1:05Speaker 1: hundred and sixty five million. Interestingly enough, soda was offered
- 1:12Speaker 1: sixteen years and seven hundred and sixty million by the Yankees. Uh,
- 1:18Speaker 1: and that was a difference. So I think I was
- 1:20Speaker 1: reading a four million dollar difference. The guy wanted four million,
- 1:24Speaker 1: five million dollars more to go across town in a
- 1:29Speaker 1: on a team where he, you know, seemed to want
- 1:33Speaker 1: to warm up to the Yankee fan base, wanted to
- 1:36Speaker 1: be part of that culture, infuse that culture. God, Dan,
- 1:40Speaker 1: he was the culture for the Yankees a lot of
- 1:43Speaker 1: this year. Yes, Aaron Judge had a remarkable year, but
- 1:46Speaker 1: Soto was there to support him and really bring that
- 1:52Speaker 1: team to the ALCS with that three run homer the
- 1:56Speaker 1: World Series with a three run homer in the ALCS.
- 2:01Speaker 1: But to me, I'm gonna stay rational on this podcast
- 2:04Speaker 1: one lag up with Alex Garrett. Yes, the Mets had
- 2:07Speaker 1: one leg up in all of this, but then god,
- 2:10Speaker 1: it was not the Red Sox or the Dodgers eventually
- 2:14Speaker 1: goes to the Dodgers. Baseball would be ruined if that happened.
- 2:20Speaker 1: So Steve Cohen and the Mets stepping in. Yes, it's
- 2:24Speaker 1: a win for New York City that Soto stays on
- 2:27Speaker 1: a day where a lot of losing happened, But it's
- 2:33Speaker 1: a bigger in a lobby. Was always a bigger loss
- 2:36Speaker 1: for the Yankees. But you know what, I think the
- 2:41Speaker 1: Yankees are being reasonable here, and we know they haven't
- 2:46Speaker 1: really jumped on a lot of contracts. That's why the
- 2:51Speaker 1: judgement was a little rare. But they don't sign those
- 2:55Speaker 1: big contracts like they used to. So I'm not gonna
- 2:59Speaker 1: be all steamed up about this if I know it
- 3:06Speaker 1: could maybe save the Yanks some cap space. And I
- 3:11Speaker 1: have a bigger dream here, dream Weaver looking at you,
- 3:15Speaker 1: Luke Weaver, that maybe you, sir, will strike out Soto
- 3:20Speaker 1: to win the World Series in twenty twenty five. That's
- 3:25Speaker 1: my shit, that's my dream in the Great One. Gabby
- 3:29Speaker 1: chimes on this podcast that is my dream, though, and
- 3:33Speaker 1: we met Luke Weaver, so maybe he'll do it. But
- 3:37Speaker 1: but I still feel like on a day where a
- 3:42Speaker 1: lot of losing happened, my heart's a little torn tonight
- 3:48Speaker 1: because I'm very happy he stayed in New York and
- 3:51Speaker 1: he's still gonna be a New Yorker, even if it's
- 3:53Speaker 1: in the orange and blue pin stripes. And I also
- 3:59Speaker 1: know it's better him being here than up and rival Boston.
- 4:05Speaker 1: How bad would that be? How bad I mean it
- 4:09Speaker 1: would be of the Dodgers got by the Orioles. So
- 4:12Speaker 1: there's a lot to be thankful for this deal, and
- 4:14Speaker 1: he keeps baseball and New York exciting. Yes, Sodo Judge
- 4:18Speaker 1: was exciting in one team, but now for six times
- 4:22Speaker 1: this upcoming season, you're going to have the Sodo Judge matchup.
- 4:27Speaker 1: That's gonna be unlike any other. The Alonso judge was okay,
- 4:33Speaker 1: but they both were injured at times, and they both
- 4:36Speaker 1: were not their potential when they faced each other. You
- 4:40Speaker 1: put Sodo verse Judge, that's exciting baseball in New York.
- 4:47Speaker 1: That's you know, it's almost like Piazza versus the Yankees.
- 4:55Speaker 1: I wouldn't say Piazza versus Year because youater won the
- 4:57Speaker 1: power of Piazza versus the Yankee. It's sexy. Okay, this
- 5:06Speaker 1: is gonna be a very fun Subway series, and I
- 5:10Speaker 1: know the Yankee fans are gonna go up there and
- 5:12Speaker 1: boo him to no end. They might maybe cheer from
- 5:15Speaker 1: after the video that shows his one year of accomplish
- 5:19Speaker 1: what year And he truly endeared himself to the Yankees
- 5:25Speaker 1: and made that culture different. But it was only a year.
- 5:32Speaker 1: And what he said after they lost the World Series
- 5:35Speaker 1: was so off base because you don't go and say,
- 5:41Speaker 1: well that homern head against the Guardians helps my value,
- 5:46Speaker 1: Like who talks like that except someone who was in
- 5:49Speaker 1: it for himself. And maybe Gabby is right that I
- 5:52Speaker 1: didn't exactly like Soto and wasn't endeared to him, Like
- 5:55Speaker 1: all these are the Yankee fans, because if Judge did this,
- 5:58Speaker 1: I'd be crushed. If Judge lefts the Yankees, that would
- 6:02Speaker 1: just be crushing. Soto is a megastar. Not say judgesn't,
- 6:10Speaker 1: but in his mind he's a megastar. He thinks he's
- 6:12Speaker 1: the biggest you know, you know what in the MLB,
- 6:16Speaker 1: so he deserves the biggest contract in the Major League
- 6:19Speaker 1: Baseball world. Well, he got it, and he can also
- 6:25Speaker 1: got a four million dollar raise in twenty twenty nine.
- 6:28Speaker 1: By the way they ops app of this deal. It's
- 6:33Speaker 1: going to be fun, It's going to be competitive in
- 6:38Speaker 1: New York. But my only concern for the Yankees is
- 6:42Speaker 1: they've lost a vital piece in this infusion of a
- 6:46Speaker 1: lineup we saw in twenty twenty two when no one
- 6:49Speaker 1: around him, Judge had to carry that team, and when
- 6:52Speaker 1: he fell apart, the whole team fell apart. When he
- 6:55Speaker 1: fell apart in this postseason, and let's not say he
- 6:57Speaker 1: didn't one up and delivered in the Alds, in the
- 7:03Speaker 1: Alcs and a little bit in the World Series. That
- 7:08Speaker 1: pitching really dominated against the Yanks hitting. I mean, we
- 7:11Speaker 1: were there at Game three when they were absolutely lifeless,
- 7:14Speaker 1: and we should have went to Game four when they
- 7:16Speaker 1: came to life down three to zero. But he was
- 7:21Speaker 1: a lifeblood for this team. And I'm I'm nervous that
- 7:29Speaker 1: the Yanks, whoever they get, even if it's four to
- 7:32Speaker 1: five players, it's gotta be some a group of folks,
- 7:38Speaker 1: a group of guys that's going to infuse this team.
- 7:41Speaker 1: VOLTI looks like he can be an infuser in the
- 7:43Speaker 1: bottom of lamp. But I mean, now you look at
- 7:46Speaker 1: it with I don't think Torres is coming back. The
- 7:51Speaker 1: mingas has to be your priority. Wells has to be
- 7:55Speaker 1: a priority to put in that lineup, and you know what,
- 7:58Speaker 1: you know, it could be fusion if he just gets
- 8:01Speaker 1: just to play. Oswaldo Cabrera, one of our guys. Oswaldo
- 8:09Speaker 1: Cabrera now has the opportunity to play, play every day
- 8:13Speaker 1: and get in that lineup and show his back. He
- 8:16Speaker 1: showed it on opening Day, He's showed it on times
- 8:19Speaker 1: at times. Well, I do what Jake Kosak and Maddie
- 8:24Speaker 1: and Madison Eisen and Jonah and a few others, Caleb
- 8:30Speaker 1: who said this all over again, and Nithan play Oswaldo
- 8:35Speaker 1: every day. That's what this opens the door to. So
- 8:41Speaker 1: I'm not gonna be one of these fans that's riled
- 8:44Speaker 1: up and pissed off. And yes, it's stunning, but is
- 8:53Speaker 1: it really the worst thing in the world. No, because
- 8:59Speaker 1: at least it's not, as I said at the beginning
- 9:01Speaker 1: of this, Boston or the Baltimore, Orioles or the Rays,
- 9:07Speaker 1: or even of course Boston or the Dodgers. He's staying
- 9:15Speaker 1: in New York and that will make New York baseball fun.
- 9:20Speaker 1: And if you're a baseball fan, you want that kind
- 9:23Speaker 1: of fun. And I always thought Judge Versa Loonza was
- 9:28Speaker 1: gonna be a fun matchup. This will be even more
- 9:29Speaker 1: exciting because the animosity that the Yankee fans are gonna
- 9:34Speaker 1: bring to Yankee Stadium to City Field when he steps
- 9:38Speaker 1: up to the plate, it's gonna be I don't remember
- 9:42Speaker 1: the last time that ademosity was there. I just don't.
- 9:49Speaker 1: But this opens the door for more playing time for
- 9:53Speaker 1: guys that need to play more. I'm talking Jason Mingez
- 9:58Speaker 1: I'm talking us well Looo Cabrera, I'm talking Austin Wells
- 10:02Speaker 1: and Trevino could do something. Maybe one of the DH
- 10:06Speaker 1: one is as as the catcher. It could give Ben
- 10:13Speaker 1: Rice more hitting. Remember he was off to a tear
- 10:15Speaker 1: when he first came up. It opens the doors for
- 10:19Speaker 1: players that truly helped. And this is why I got
- 10:24Speaker 1: the twenty twenty four Yankees roster shirt when they won
- 10:28Speaker 1: the American League Championship, because that roster had a lot
- 10:35Speaker 1: of guys that maybe didn't play as much, but they
- 10:39Speaker 1: got them to the World Series collectively. And now it's
- 10:48Speaker 1: time for those guys. That's the one of the radar
- 10:50Speaker 1: to be on the radar for the twenty twenty five Yankees.
- 10:55Speaker 1: And yes, how fit he wanted to be twenty five
- 10:58Speaker 1: years later because pandemic screwed all the twenty the anniversary of
- 11:02Speaker 1: that up twenty five years later, the Yankees the Mets
- 11:07Speaker 1: World Series, and as the Yankee band, I'm open as
- 11:10Speaker 1: we were striking out Soto to end the whole thing.
- 11:13Speaker 1: That would be as fitting a script as ever. But
- 11:19Speaker 1: I even think local outlets like WFAN broke their football
- 11:26Speaker 1: coverage for this breaking news. S and why I had
- 11:29Speaker 1: boxing on, but they broke that for coverage of Sodo deal.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Bruce Beck is on NBC right now working the late
- 11:38Speaker 1: night shift to talk about one Soto coming to the Mets.
- 11:43Speaker 1: This is groundbreaking. It's why Steve Cohen bought the team.
- 11:50Speaker 1: And I will tell you this. I've written about him
- 11:54Speaker 1: buying this team back in the day, back in twenty
- 11:57Speaker 1: twenty one. I first wrote about it, and believe or not,
- 12:02Speaker 1: I didn't direct message Steve Cohen, the owner of the Mets,
- 12:06Speaker 1: when I said I actually said I want to learn
- 12:15Speaker 1: that I had written a column about your buying of
- 12:16Speaker 1: the Mets and how exciting it was to have your own,
- 12:20Speaker 1: you own your childhood team. He basically took a team
- 12:26Speaker 1: that was and we know Saul and Irish Cats and
- 12:30Speaker 1: they are you know, family to Fred Wilpont and the
- 12:34Speaker 1: Wolpellons ran the team for a long time. But what
- 12:38Speaker 1: Steve Cohen did was he saw that his home team,
- 12:44Speaker 1: his childhood team, was dysfunctional, and he bought the team
- 12:52Speaker 1: and said, I'm going to turn this around. And while
- 12:57Speaker 1: we saw some of that this year, and we saw
- 12:58Speaker 1: the Lindor being the first aggressive signing without him even
- 13:02Speaker 1: seeing a pitch in a Met uniform. This signing shows
- 13:10Speaker 1: Cohen truly is willing to go all in with his
- 13:14Speaker 1: childhood team. Before I go, I want to tell you
- 13:18Speaker 1: exactly what I wrote a couple of years back when
- 13:20Speaker 1: Cohen bought this team, because it feels relevant today. It
- 13:28Speaker 1: feels relevant when you see a guy like Steve Cohen,
- 13:38Speaker 1: a billionaire like Steve Cohen, by his home child, hometown team,
- 13:45Speaker 1: his childhood team and turn it around. And I wrote,
- 13:55Speaker 1: sometimes you can buy back your childhood. Just ask Steve Cohen.
- 14:05Speaker 1: I wrote this back in the sixties anniversary of the Mets.
- 14:10Speaker 1: The team is a big spender and that should be
- 14:12Speaker 1: a relief to some. They are spending to be winners again,
- 14:15Speaker 1: because I believe Steve Cohen wants to the childhood team
- 14:18Speaker 1: win again, plain and simple. He's been a long suffering
- 14:21Speaker 1: Met fan, just like Joe from Queens. You get the point.
- 14:25Speaker 1: It's amazing, I mean amazing that money can help reinvent
- 14:29Speaker 1: your childhood when you have the resources, When you have
- 14:33Speaker 1: the resources, Whether or not Cityfield was made just for
- 14:42Speaker 1: Fred Willphon's childhood dream of Ebbottsfield does not matter. Now
- 14:46Speaker 1: it's Cohen's home a Homie keeps restructuring day by day,
- 14:52Speaker 1: trying to get the seam on the right track. He
- 14:54Speaker 1: clearly wants the buck because they have bucks old at
- 14:56Speaker 1: the time to stop at Cityfield this fall, and he
- 15:00Speaker 1: got to give his childhood whims and his adult wallet
- 15:04Speaker 1: all the credit in the world. I'll repost that tonight
- 15:09Speaker 1: because my god, this was written two years ago, three
- 15:13Speaker 1: years ago when he bought the team, and it feels
- 15:15Speaker 1: as relevant as ever, doesn't it. Sometimes you can buy
- 15:20Speaker 1: back your childhood, just ask Steve Cohen. And he's not
- 15:24Speaker 1: bringing it, not just buying it back, He's bringing back
- 15:29Speaker 1: the Mets, and as a gift from Queens and Manhattan.
- 15:37Speaker 1: I'm very excited to see how this changed in New
- 15:41Speaker 1: York City baseball because it will and it's going to
- 15:47Speaker 1: be fun and tonight, I love the Yankees. But I
- 15:53Speaker 1: will say maybe it's the only time I say it,
- 15:55Speaker 1: but for fifteen years, I think we'll be saying it
- 15:58Speaker 1: sometimes the Mets have one leg up in New York.
- 16:03Speaker 1: And when did you ever think we'd say that you're
- 16:07Speaker 1: late to the party. There you go, I'm Alex Garrett.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Mets sign Juan Soto fifteen years, seven hundred and sixty
- 16:17Speaker 1: five million, a bright spot in a very very dark
- 16:22Speaker 1: New York sports season. Have a great night. Whoo,
