- 0:17It is a Thursday. It's the 14th of March and
- 0:22welcome welcome to another day where you and I on this A
- 0:26chapter, A day Bible reading podcast Get to well Yep, read a
- 0:30chapter of the Bible. How fantastic.
- 0:33And we are continuing to read in the book of Mark.
- 0:37And let us just pay attention for a moment and remember that
- 0:40Mark is not capturing the life of Jesus day by day by day, but
- 0:46he at the end of his life as he reflects on sitting at the feet
- 0:51of the apostles, He wants to put together this argument, put
- 0:56together this convincing portrait of a man so that you as
- 1:01the reader can have full assurance that her Jesus says he
- 1:05is, is in fact the truth. So everything he shows and
- 1:09today, today he shares quite a lot.
- 1:11In chapter 6 we are going to talk about Jesus being rejected,
- 1:15sending out his disciples, the death of John the Baptist,
- 1:18feeding the 5000 and walking on water.
- 1:22There is a lot going on here. And each one of these things
- 1:25Mark shares with us as he builds this case, builds this momentum
- 1:31of overwhelming evidence to say that Jesus is God.
- 1:38It is a glorious document, a glorious letter, a glorious
- 1:41communication from our God to us so that we would know what he is
- 1:47like. How amazing.
- 1:51We do have a gracious God who doesn't just leave it to chance,
- 1:54but captures this man named Mark to write down this story so that
- 1:58you and I today can hear it and know more about him.
- 2:03So let's do that. Let us read together this next
- 2:06chapter. Mark Chapter 6
- 2:20Jesus left that part of the country and returned with his
- 2:23disciples to Nazareth, his hometown, the next Sabbath.
- 2:27He began teaching in the synagogue, and many who heard
- 2:30him were amazed. They asked where did he get all
- 2:34this wisdom and the power to perform such miracles?
- 2:38Then they scoffed. He's just a Carpenter, the son
- 2:42of Mary and the brother of James.
- 2:44Joseph, Judas and Simon and his sisters live right here among
- 2:49us. They were deeply offended and
- 2:52refused to believe in him. Then Jesus told them a prophet
- 2:56is honoured everywhere except in his hometown and among his
- 3:01relatives and his own family, and because of their unbelief,
- 3:06he couldn't do any miracles among them except to place his
- 3:09hands on a few sick people and heal them.
- 3:12And he was amazed at their unbelief.
- 3:16Then Jesus went from village to village teaching the people, and
- 3:20he called his 12 disciples together and began sending them
- 3:24out two by two, giving them authority to cast out evil
- 3:28spirits. He told them to take nothing for
- 3:31their journey except a walking stick.
- 3:34No food, no traveller's bag, no money.
- 3:38He allowed them to wear sandals, but not to take a change of
- 3:41clothes. Wherever you go, he said, Stay
- 3:45in the same house until you leave town.
- 3:48But if any place refuses to welcome you or listen to you,
- 3:52shake its dust from your feet as you leave, to show that you have
- 3:57abandoned those people to their fate.
- 4:00So the disciples went out telling everyone they met to
- 4:04repent of their sins and turned to God.
- 4:07And they cast out many demons and healed many sick people,
- 4:12anointing them with olive oil. Herod Antipas, the king soon
- 4:18heard about Jesus because everyone was talking about him.
- 4:22Some were saying this must be John the Baptist raised from the
- 4:26dead. That is why he can do such
- 4:28miracles. Others said here's the prophet
- 4:32Elijah. Still others said he's a prophet
- 4:36like the other great prophets of the past.
- 4:39When Herod heard about Jesus, he said John, the man I beheaded,
- 4:45has come back from the dead, for Herod had sent soldiers to
- 4:49arrest and imprison John as a favour to Herodias.
- 4:54She had been his brother Philip's wife, but Herod had
- 4:57married her. John had been telling Herod it
- 5:01is against God's law for you to marry your brother's wife.
- 5:05So Herodias bore a grudge against John and wanted to kill
- 5:09him. But without Herod's approval she
- 5:11was powerless. For Herod respected John, and
- 5:15knowing that he was a good and holy man, he protected him.
- 5:19Herod was greatly disturbed whenever he talked with John,
- 5:23but Even so, he liked to listen to him.
- 5:27Herodias's chance finally came on Herod's birthday.
- 5:31He gave a party for his high government officials, army
- 5:34officers, and the leading citizens of Galilee.
- 5:38Then his daughter, also named Herodias, came in and performed
- 5:42a dance that greatly pleased Herod and his guests.
- 5:46Ask me for anything you like, the king said to the girl.
- 5:50And I will give it to you, he even vowed.
- 5:53I will give you whatever you ask, up to half my Kingdom.
- 5:58She went out and asked her mother What should I ask for?
- 6:03Her mother told her Ask for the head of John the Baptist.
- 6:08Said the girl hurried back to the king and told him I want the
- 6:12head of John the Baptist right now on a tray.
- 6:18Then the king deeply regretted what he had said, but because of
- 6:22his vows he had made in front of his guests, he couldn't refuse
- 6:25her. So he immediately sent an
- 6:28executioner to the prison to cut off John's head and bring it to
- 6:32him. The soldier beheaded John in the
- 6:35prison, brought his head on a tray and gave it to the girl,
- 6:39who took it to her mother. When John's disciples heard what
- 6:43had happened, they came to get his body and buried it in a
- 6:47tomb. The apostles returned to Jesus
- 6:53from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and
- 6:56taught. Then Jesus said let's go off by
- 7:00ourselves to a quiet place and rest a while.
- 7:03He said this because there were so many people coming and going
- 7:07that Jesus and his apostles didn't even have time to eat.
- 7:11Said the left by boat for a quiet place where they could be
- 7:15alone. But many people recognised them
- 7:18and saw them leaving, and people from many towns ran ahead along
- 7:22the shore and got there ahead of them.
- 7:24Jesus saw a huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he
- 7:28had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a
- 7:32shepherd. So he began teaching them many
- 7:35things. Late in the afternoon, his
- 7:38disciples came to him and said this is a remote place and it's
- 7:43already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can
- 7:47go to the nearby farms and villages and buy something to
- 7:50eat. But Jesus said you feed them
- 7:54with what they asked. We'd have to work for months to
- 7:58earn enough money to buy food for all these people.
- 8:02How much bread do you have? He asked.
- 8:05Go and find out. They came back and reported we
- 8:09have 5 loaves of bread and two fish.
- 8:13Then Jesus told the disciples to have the people sit down in
- 8:16groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups of 50
- 8:20or 100. Jesus took the five loaves and
- 8:23two fish, looking up toward heaven.
- 8:26He blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into
- 8:30pieces, he kept giving the bread to the disciples so they could
- 8:34distribute it to the people. He also divided the fish for
- 8:38everyone to share. They all ate as much as they
- 8:42wanted, and afterward the disciples picked up 12 baskets
- 8:47of leftover bread and fish. A total of 5000 men and their
- 8:52families were fed. Immediately after this, Jesus
- 8:58insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and head
- 9:01across the lake to Bethsaida while he sent the people home.
- 9:06After telling everyone goodbye, he went up into the hills by
- 9:10himself to pray. Late that night the disciples
- 9:15were in their boat in the middle of the lake, and Jesus was alone
- 9:18on land. He saw that they were in serious
- 9:22trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and
- 9:25waves. About 3:00 in the morning, Jesus
- 9:29came toward them, walking on the water.
- 9:33He intended to go past them, but when they saw him walking on the
- 9:37water, they cried out in terror, thinking he was a ghost.
- 9:42They were all terrified when they saw him, but Jesus spoke to
- 9:47them at once. Don't be afraid, he said.
- 9:51Take courage. I am here.
- 9:54Then he climbed into the boat and the wind stopped.
- 9:59They were totally amazed, but they still didn't understand the
- 10:04significance of the miracle of the loaves.
- 10:06Their hearts were too hard to take it in.
- 10:10After they had crossed the lake, they landed at Gennesaret.
- 10:14They brought the boat to shore and climbed out.
- 10:17The people recognise Jesus at once, and they ran throughout
- 10:21the whole area, carrying sick people on mats to wherever they
- 10:25heard he was, wherever he went, in villages, cities or the
- 10:30countryside. They brought the sick out to the
- 10:33marketplaces. They begged to let the sick
- 10:36touch at least a fringe of his robe and all he touched him for
- 10:41healed. Oh Jesus.
- 10:53It's exhausting just reading these accounts of how people
- 10:59just flocked to you. Wherever you went, you are quite
- 11:05something else, and I can just imagine the people just
- 11:10revelling in your company wanting more of you.
- 11:13More time, more love, more miraculous acts, our Lord, as we
- 11:20read when you are exhausted and just need time to yourself to
- 11:24recover. But the crowds won't relent.
- 11:28You're filled with compassion and you teach them and you heal
- 11:34them again and again. Lord, sometimes it's hard to
- 11:42imagine why you continue to bother with us.
- 11:45When we keep on making poor decisions, we keep on acting
- 11:49selfishly. But here we see you with a heart
- 11:54so full of compassion. Lord, help us know that your
- 11:59compassion is for us too. Help us know that we are loved
- 12:05no matter how foolish we are, no matter how many errors we make
- 12:10or how many times our stubborn hearts get in the way of our
- 12:14better intentions. Thank you for your love and your
- 12:20patience, your goodness. When you're mercy, unfailing as
- 12:25it is, we just love you and we thank you that you love us too.
- 12:35That's in your compassionate and loving name that we pray all
- 12:39these things. Ah man.
