- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermind, set coach, creative strategist, and also
- 0:09happen to be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning. So I want to tell you a story
- 0:31today because, and I'm sure you may have heard this before, but
- 0:34it's a really good one and it's going to get to the point, so
- 0:36bear with me for a second. So back in the 1930s, there was
- 0:41a little girl and she was a British little girl, and she was
- 0:46diagnosed many times by people with hyperactivity.
- 0:49And it was a super challenge for her mother because she was
- 0:52labeled a problem child and she didn't know what to do with her.
- 0:56So she took her to observational doctors after observational
- 0:59doctors, and finally she discovered a Doctor Who was
- 1:02willing to observe her child and see exactly what was going on
- 1:06rather than just hear the story. So he turned on.
- 1:09They were observing her in a little room and the little girl
- 1:12was twirling around and moving and going through all the stuff.
- 1:15And the doctor said, hang on. And he put music in the room and
- 1:18they were watching her through a glass that you could see
- 1:20through, but she couldn't see them.
- 1:23And he started to recognize that this child was a dancer.
- 1:28And he made the comment to the mom.
- 1:29He said, see, she isn't a problem child after all.
- 1:32She's a dancer. She's a natural dancer.
- 1:34She moves in rhythm. And the the famous part of the
- 1:38story is that that little girl became Jillian Lynn, and she was
- 1:42one of the most famous ballerinas over there at the
- 1:44time. And she choreographed,
- 1:46choreographed Cats and Phantom of the Opera on Broadway.
- 1:51I mean, think about this. Think about what would have
- 1:54happened if someone hadn't done the observation.
- 1:57And fortunately for this little girl, her mom observed her and
- 2:02she was able to get into the right group of people that were
- 2:06able to help her. Like this observational task
- 2:10helped her. And it unblocked a huge part of
- 2:14who she was and her identity because she had somebody that
- 2:17could do that. And it happened when she was
- 2:19little. And what happens if we don't
- 2:20have that? What happens if we don't have
- 2:22that? At this, at the point we are in
- 2:24our lives where someone hasn't done that, well, we have to
- 2:28effectively do that for ourselves.
- 2:29We have to become our best, best advocate.
- 2:32We have to make the decision that says I'm going to go out
- 2:34there and live beyond what I have been told about myself, The
- 2:39labels, because the labels can take us out.
- 2:42The labels can put us into a place that is dysfunctional and
- 2:47they're trying to help us, but they're putting a label on us.
- 2:50So I, I can attest to this first hand because I can't tell you
- 2:54how many times in my life I was put on the, the mat and said,
- 2:59Hey, you are someone who was a daydreamer.
- 3:02You are always out in the clouds.
- 3:03You do not pay attention. You, you have trouble staying in
- 3:07this world. You're always thinking about
- 3:09somewhere else. And all of that was true.
- 3:12But if it, if that wasn't true, I would have never gone into the
- 3:16business that I went into and I would have never been writing
- 3:18books and I would have never been shooting a podcast from a
- 3:20chicken coop because I was willing to live beyond the
- 3:23labels and be. And, and here's the other part
- 3:26that's so crazy about this. How can you ever, ever, ever
- 3:30find the, the people that are like minded that can help you to
- 3:33grow and, and do something with yourself if you are not willing
- 3:38to show your true colors because someone put a label on you and
- 3:42that terrified you and you just like, OK, this is it.
- 3:45I'm, I'm this, I'm that label now.
- 3:48I mean, it is debilitating when you really think about it.
- 3:52And our job now as wherever we are, whatever's happening,
- 3:56whatever is happening in our lives, our job 100% is to sit
- 4:01there and say, am I willing? Especially now it's the
- 4:04beginning of the year, February 1st.
- 4:06Am I willing to live beyond the labels and get over the
- 4:10roadblocks that may have been put in front of me by people who
- 4:13didn't even truly know who I was?
- 4:16Because I can attest to the fact that the people that were making
- 4:21those statements about me, we're not getting to know me and who I
- 4:24was as a as a child and as a person.
- 4:27Even when I was, you know, older and I was working and I would go
- 4:31into places and I would say, you know, I remember distinctly
- 4:34working in a pizza place and enduring high school.
- 4:37And I was, I had a lot of credits and I could get out of
- 4:40school early so I could go to work.
- 4:42And I used to laugh because they called it a work release program
- 4:45and it always made me think of like prison, but any in any
- 4:48event. And often it was a prison for me
- 4:51being in school in those environments.
- 4:52But anyway, I was able to go and there was a woman who owned the
- 4:56pizza place and we would talk about, you know, what my role
- 5:01was, how I was going to do it. And I would suggest things to
- 5:04her. I would say, oh, well, you know,
- 5:06I and I would do it the way that she said it, But I would watch
- 5:09how we moved behind the counter. And I said to her, you know, if
- 5:13we flopped this, it would be more efficient sliding down to
- 5:17the cash register. So it would just be easier for
- 5:19us to just get there. And she was so upset by that.
- 5:22And she's like, your role is just make the sandwiches.
- 5:26And I was like, OK, I was just trying to, you know, I was just
- 5:29generally looking at it now. That was my creativity coming
- 5:34out. Imagine what could have happened
- 5:35if she fostered that. And mind you, the place didn't
- 5:39last too long and I didn't last there.
- 5:41And that's just the point. It's you're going to find that
- 5:45you have to advocate for yourself to get beyond these
- 5:48things. So my suggestion is live beyond
- 5:52the label and really advocate for yourself so that you can
- 5:56find those like minded people that are going to help you get
- 6:00to that next place and be open and show who you really are.
- 6:04Because you've got to, you've got to live in those shoes that
- 6:07you really are in order to find all the greatness.
- 6:10All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 6:12will see you tomorrow. Bye.
