- 1:11The original air date November fifth of nineteen forty nine, and the title
- 1:17is a fine Italian hand, Get this and get it straight. Crime is
- 1:23a second road, and those who travel had wind up in the gut of
- 1:26the prison of the grave. It was a broken body in a quiet house,
- 1:30don't play on America around at midnight, and a boy and a girl
- 1:33in love running away, all because of one man's fine Italian hands. From
- 1:40the pen of Layman Chandler. Our standing offer of crime fiction comes with more
- 1:44famous character and the adventures are Philip Marlow now with Gerald Moore Darling as some
- 2:00small all we bring you tonight's exciting story, the fine Italian hands. The
- 2:19day Judge passed had been full of jarring contrast, the last of hiding hot
- 2:23break, a woman dying of loneliness from an overcottage city, a man who
- 2:28sacrificed everything to make a fortune and shot himself when he got it, the
- 2:32messed up by products of our hot up civilization. The thought of him stayed
- 2:37in my mind as I drove over the freeway to San Fernando Valley, because
- 2:40the job I was on promised no change in the day's pattern of combining things
- 2:45that didn't belong together. When I parssed at the corner of Magnolion van Ey's
- 2:49Boulevard, I was still trying to reconcile my new client, the owner and
- 2:52operator of a little amusement parts for children, with a panicky voice on the
- 2:55phone that had begged me to come at once and hard the spot, a
- 3:00heavy set old man moving among the stampeding merry around sallion and taking sumple tickets
- 3:06like plumbs, and the sister of lapping kids rapping for brass ring. We
- 3:10never changed the way when he saw me. Ha, god me you miss
- 3:19themallow. Maybe that's right, mister Angela, Oh miss Smallow coming get away
- 3:23to my little low. We gotta talk right away, no time, it's
- 3:25away. That's a night a little boy. I'm very proud of you.
- 3:30Now you take your free riding with the nick. I gotta talk with from
- 3:32the business. Goodbye, it's coming to Mistermallow. See down night, mister
- 3:42mellow. I'm a very worried man. Yeah, I know about your son.
- 3:46You said on the phone, What a lot of trouble at the end,
- 3:47Mistri Angelo. He's a good, good boy in he's a bid to
- 3:52college. He's a veteran from the wall with two bronzes, star and a
- 3:55propolar heart. But look there's his picture in his uniform. Uh, he
- 4:00said, go with the boy. Sure. Sure. Now he's in a
- 4:04chairman that is Yeah, he's in a German with the gambler man. The
- 4:08name is AfroB You know this man, yes, slightly, Frank Sefn's a
- 4:14bad boy. They just spent all money or what my boy not throwing his
- 4:19money away like a bad No, it's about a girl. Which way does
- 4:25it go? She Saffron's girl and Bernarda was making a play for it.
- 4:28That's right, that's the right. This is a girl that belongs to the
- 4:30gambler, and my boys are taking an hour old find he won't be telling
- 4:34me nothing. I find out what just the same. Maybe he's just to
- 4:39playing in the biggest shock and maybe he really loses his heart. I don't
- 4:44know, it's it's gone too far. Now, this a trouble. My
- 4:47boys are gonna be killed, or he's gonna kill or somebody, And I
- 4:50don't know what to do. What makes you think it's gonna that Parma to
- 4:54the Angelo. Maybe Safann will just get seperate, scabbern out of off,
- 4:58just get no. I know he's my lord, my boy gonna cut off.
- 5:01He's a three to off. He's a champion with the girl's gonna grow
- 5:04really yeah, my tonight the gotter more help for him. Bernardo come home
- 5:09tonight. So with his face all of these off, he won't tell his
- 5:12papa note. All he says is that the red, the face, the
- 5:15dog. I'm gonna get even. I'm gonna kill him. He's just the
- 5:19cy my Bernardo. He won't be to me. He pushes me away and
- 5:24you go out to get red face doesn't say different. Be sure he was
- 5:29the one who had your son beata O shure the course of who ever,
- 5:31and heduced to because of Lisa Dancer. This is Paula. I don't even
- 5:35know her, lost her name. Paula? What anything I can do about
- 5:40business? The Angelo says, Bernardo down and bring him home. No,
- 5:43no, that's no good, my Bernardo. He's too to head the strong.
- 5:46No, mister Marlowe, I must have find out for some things.
- 5:49I must have find out if this a girl is using my boy I sort
- 5:53of play thing, or if she's really in love with him? What difference
- 5:57does that make? A different? Well, if this a girl you really
- 6:00love my boy, then I do anything to bring again together. Anything Now,
- 6:05if this is only a game, if she played then he said,
- 6:09I could see because he's a What does that mean? But oh that that
- 6:12means if it goes to that's the way, that's the way it goes.
- 6:15And I know what I got to do. So you find out this from
- 6:18you? Please? Well, I don't know. Probably not the kind of
- 6:20thing I like. Look, I know I asked you to spy on somebody
- 6:25used to find out for me? Easy, I kind of talk. Is
- 6:30so good with you a cineer so high I know, probably please my boys
- 6:35and mama die and now but now that's all I got to link. He's
- 6:39so good a boy. He should not get into trouble just for the cheaper
- 6:44game of a lord. Don't you understand me? And what I knew of
- 6:50Frank Stephanie had twenty to worry about without I had a channel. Didn't know
- 6:54when to quit, or maybe it was deefinitely didn't know when to quit.
- 6:58That fought but specific in advance stole me. Mister Angelo gave me a description
- 7:02of the girl seen, but once told me that Bernardo had moved away from
- 7:05home. He didn't know where, but the park closed at Tendem, that
- 7:10he'd be there all night, and that was all. My first step was
- 7:13to locate the dance to name Paula, so outside, I said Nichols through
- 7:16a phone until I called everything from Ballet of Burlet, but got no caller,
- 7:20which left only Frank Stephen's easy money move. It was a ranch house,
- 7:25California, tile cut under the hill south of Ventura on a dead end,
- 7:29cold sun bird. That's why I got the nod preticable window. I
- 7:32wandered through the bar and passed the dice table the door at back Mark Private
- 7:35and went in. I set Fido to rockpile, where the boy locked the
- 7:40complexion and fawned up at me from the telephone as he talked. The wife
- 7:43was a sake carry singer who they hit the wait as quietly from the thing
- 7:47over again. I don't care if it takes you a week this joint.
- 7:50Don't soak up no five rand shortages. You guys find it goodbye? Well,
- 7:56what's on your mind? Sud I seem to remember you? Being a
- 7:59noun is an no formal call. I'm just looking for an old friend.
- 8:01We don't have any old friends to sit. So's that's figure. Mine's taller.
- 8:05She's a dancer. I understand that. Mister Seffern knows they're quite well.
- 8:09You might tell me where I can get in touch with her. So
- 8:11you're a friend of Paula Baker's. Huh, yeah, that's right some way
- 8:15back. Let's all touch you through. Her name's not Faker. That came
- 8:18right out of thin air. And now what do you really want? They
- 8:20get easy boy, He's just cagy with last names. That's all she gave
- 8:22us. Jones, who's a Duncan depropment saw a credit section three hundred bucks
- 8:28worth. I got this fine her references, and I want to see mister
- 8:31Saffron. Oh he's not in. I'll take it up with him later.
- 8:33If it was his time, you'll hear from us. I get easy on
- 8:35yourself, nights. Just tell me where I can find it. Op that
- 8:37door. There you got the whole city to look in and take your cry.
- 8:45Hey a blushing boy. One thing more? What's your name? I
- 8:50want to get a straight that's all. It wasn't a total loss. I
- 8:56managed to keep the back door open, rung enough to snap off the nightclatch,
- 8:58and I met the red faced man who no doubts supervised for beating Bernardo
- 9:01had taken earlier. I kicked twenty of noise out of the iron steps going
- 9:05down, and then I crossed the parking lot and went back against the wall
- 9:09and waited. Halfway through my first cigarette. Bunker came out, got in
- 9:11the car and drove away. I watched him outside, then sloked back him
- 9:16quietly, located sepranz eight by twelve desks and started through it. And that's
- 9:20top drawing furs. The letter with again his home ddress on it and under
- 9:24had a picture one of smiling lovely clothes in front of a dance studio on
- 9:28Woolshire. She wore a follows description like a snug pair of flacks and dance
- 9:33instruction with a field and the fine art of hooking that I overlooked completely.
- 9:37I closed the drawer and started out. When I heard someone coming, I
- 9:41jammed my cigarette into the ash tray and got back against the door frame as
- 9:45a cleaning woman bustled in as smoldering cigarette bus so wonderous trapped one sprouted grass.
- 10:00Hey, somebody's been in here. Ill, it's quiet, baby,
- 10:03shut up, and I was American? Is it a deal? Okay?
- 10:09Hey, hey, y'all belong here. Mister Hey, that is you beautiful.
- 10:13Let's forget we see each other. We'll come a trusted employees golden a
- 10:18golden by Busworth. And if I hear one piece out of you before I
- 10:22get out of here, I'll come back some day and for glue and your
- 10:24soap bottles. Goodbye, baby. The DNS studio is presently gruffy my clcial
- 10:37modernistic press out on Lucia Boulevard. Dowitsch pop from old fashioned receptionists inside,
- 10:41we'll signed me up express sympathy over my rusty Rumber and assured me that since
- 10:46I've heard so much about her, I could have Paula, that is Miss
- 10:50Calvin, while on Judy is my instructors. If I'd only be so kind,
- 10:54it's to step this way. So I am stept this way into a
- 10:58ballroom with a like Bernie's fast looked as deep as the night sky, and
- 11:01after a death hand signal from the receptionist, all A Calvin glided taught us.
- 11:07Introductions were made how do you do? And suddenly the room was filled
- 11:11with a soft speed of a Rumber band and we were off rusby another would
- 11:16have been fun if I having that work to do. That's what it was.
- 11:18Tough. You're doing, beautiful mismlw. Don't loosen us. No,
- 11:24I'll try. I'm glad I drew you with my instructor, Miss Calvin.
- 11:28Bernie said you were tough, told me to insist on you and accept no
- 11:33substitution. Nnie. Uh huh? Usual you remember him, don't you?
- 11:39Good? Yes, of course I remember who nice sky Bernie. Good kids,
- 11:43So keep your feed a little closer together, mister Marlin, don't be
- 11:48afraid to use your knees, you know, Baby, Bernie's got everything well,
- 11:54raise even a temper, just to keep life interesting, right, Father,
- 12:01I thanks a lot of you. That's me. Hey, I'm talking
- 12:05to you. The next question I suppose is how did I feel about me?
- 12:09Yeah? Now it's your turn to loosen up and relax. Baby.
- 12:13I resent the checked up on by anybody. When I want Bernie Dangelo to
- 12:18know how I feel, I'll tell him. And when I want Frank Staffman
- 12:22to know, I'll tell him too. You came here tonight, so roomb
- 12:26the lesson, and I am old mother Hubbard. Okay, Mother Hubbard.
- 12:31I want to find out one thing. Are you in love with Bernide Angelo?
- 12:35That's nobody's business but mine, sir. I could be real wrong about
- 12:39that, baby, then it's my mistake, and I'll make it all by
- 12:41myself. Have you seen Bernie Knight? No? I haven't. And that's
- 12:46all the conversation you get me. You can have the rest of your roombers
- 12:50who wanted no thanks, I'll see you around, Paula. And that's that
- 13:03for finding what my client wanted was a thought of Saffron. I stopped and
- 13:07called a gambling time, but he was still out, so I drove up
- 13:11in the cold Water Canyon a number eighty one hundred, the first real hint
- 13:15that something was wrong, with a cussion dangling at a crazy angle over one
- 13:18of the lighted windows next to it, with the front door handing six inches
- 13:22open and inside the legs of an overturned table was sticking up in the air,
- 13:26and then pieces of a broken lamp. Whitter he was for that was
- 13:31only the beginning. I nudged the door open, then stepped in. It
- 13:35was a mess. I saw his feet first and behind the couch, so
- 13:41he took one glance at his face. Frank Saffron has been literally beaten the
- 13:46desk by a pair of very fast, very deadly fist. Don't move one
- 13:50kinch jocko. So I take three guesses, a turnaround and look Bernardo with
- 13:56guns. Oh, I got it all right. It was his automatic till
- 14:00him at forty five, and I'll use it if I have to. Who
- 14:03are you name? Smallow? When it Stappen's boys, you got a real
- 14:07talent for being wrong, haven't your kid? Who are you? A private
- 14:09detective hired by one Ambrogio D'Angelo Papa yeah, because he was worried sick about
- 14:15his boy. But I told him to stay out of it. I told
- 14:18him it was my man. You did a nice thorough job of handling it.
- 14:22You did this, didn't you. Yeah, Saffron had it coming to
- 14:24him. I was beat up to that on his orders. I came here
- 14:28to pay him back, but I didn't intend to kill him for what to
- 14:30stick around for. I didn't stay around me like he's been dead over an
- 14:31hour. I left and like I was going, and I came back just
- 14:33a few minutes. Yeah, yeah, I know found out he was dead.
- 14:37Huh. Yeah, I guess I better call it. I guess you
- 14:39better stand still. If you're really working to my old man, if you'll
- 14:43really want to help him, the best thing you can do is to get
- 14:46out of here and shut up about this until tomorrow morning. I don't work
- 14:48that way, kid. I'm gonna call your old man and the police,
- 14:52and we're gonna sit here until I show up. You won't give me a
- 14:56break, not that kind. If you run, you haven't got a chance.
- 15:01We'll just have to see about that. I'm sorry to turned out this
- 15:03way, but it didn't I got a lot of things to do. So
- 15:07take your ethics, swallow and sleep on them. Do come back in just
- 15:24a moment the second act of Philip Mallow, but first with thousands of dollars
- 15:28of wonderful prizes. Thin it again is fun for the whole family to play.
- 15:31Make a date to listen over most of these CBS stations every Saturday night.
- 15:37Now with our star Gerald Moore, we returned to the second act of
- 15:41Philip Marlow and tonight's story the Fine Italian Hand. I spreashed some water on
- 15:56my face and wabble over it with telephone that was stilled across the flaw and
- 16:00Frank Steppern's broken body. It was too late to do anything more constructive than
- 16:03call my client and or he heard it from the police, tell him what
- 16:07his boy Bernado is enough to the kind of job, and I give an
- 16:11alas and I too figure out of So when I die the number and got
- 16:14my lands, I was glad. You know, it didn't quite figure that
- 16:17the end of the Angelo shouldn't be in now. There was absolutely nothing to
- 16:21do but call the police. Sawyer get away from that phone, go pay
- 16:25attention to a man who just took into the room, A man with a
- 16:27red face who also held a gun in hand. Oh well the departments,
- 16:32so addictis that's how he gets around? There is justice, Frank, last
- 16:36name was Jones. Two, you're over working a bum joke. Also,
- 16:38I didn't do this, and who did? And how do you figure in
- 16:41around here and over at the club? Come on, smart gallet's level first?
- 16:45Who are you? The name Mallow? And the trade private detective hired
- 16:48by who? Tomorrow? Let's not pulltisse who you're working for? A mallow?
- 16:52Quiet old guy namdi Angelo. There's nothing worse than running America around for
- 16:56kids, you know? Quiet little game? And yeah, yeah that must
- 17:02be the punk's old man, huh, which means that the kid Bernie must
- 17:04have done this right, Yeah he did it, but only after he got
- 17:07cut up this afternoon by the lake. Mister Saffron here all representative. That's
- 17:11not me, roverboy. I never messed in Frank's private life anymore, and
- 17:15I could help, which means what did I take Bernie DeAngelo one night to
- 17:18a flat he has over on Lancash from near Moore Park. Fight on Lancash
- 17:21and what numbers? I don't know? The first houthelphic corner of Moor Park
- 17:25on the south side. He just moved in. But what's the difference was
- 17:27Now, don't move Morrow, or I'll knock you flatter in that handkerchief?
- 17:32What handkerchief? That one by the body? Oh yeah, well the initial
- 17:38the apostasy as the Angelo that does it? Okay? But to put away
- 17:45the house, I'll leave quietly. So what I crack at that fight in
- 17:48lancash from near Moore Parks outside? Why but if the kids kill iron,
- 17:51I could stop him without calling a cop and then we right on into losing
- 17:55his grip altogether, which would mean lots of firepower and the kid sooner or
- 17:57later did and the gutter. What's wrong with that? A couple of things,
- 18:00but in particular what it might do to yeh, yeah, I know.
- 18:03It's a nice old guy who runs a merry go round for kids.
- 18:07Nuts. So long, sucker, howitt's his lord beat it before I start
- 18:11crying. Bernie d'angelo's spun on Lancasham turned out to be second floor rear and
- 18:22all that went with it, from the so south Land lady to the very
- 18:25public place home with a faint line of naked unsauceded light bulbs. The week
- 18:29to disturb the shadows the carda. But of course the unhappy marriage of a
- 18:33half a dozen distinct cooking odors sinking out of the trenches. There as many
- 18:36rooms where cooking was sickly hibited. Bernie had Room nine at the end of
- 18:41the L shaped hall, And when I turned and sought it for a door,
- 18:44I was glad to see yellow light oozing out of the cracks. And
- 18:47they hear a tiny phonograph making nuts so grand grand opera, and I knocked
- 18:52at it with a barrel of my thirty eight. Yeah, who is it?
- 18:56Conn of butt? I turn that phonograph down. We can't hear us.
- 19:00I'll take out here, okay, I'll take care of it. Goodbye.
- 19:03I tell fast Junior to take care of it now. I won't have
- 19:04to come out here again. It'll make me feel nasty. Does that come
- 19:07across? Yeah, real curent horr. Yeah, well, don't get frank
- 19:11all the way. Quit, But you w with me conversation for a start.
- 19:18I turn that thing off. We're gonna talk, Bernie. What'll my
- 19:25old man again? That's a waste for time. What sun is to fallow?
- 19:26You know that, And I also know you'll never get any place running.
- 19:30Let's reply, real heart, Oh fine, madame? Was younger?
- 19:34It over there? Yeah? If you please miss color? How stupid did
- 19:40you think we were morlow? Or you've forgotten all about Pola here? No,
- 19:42I hadn't forgotten. I just figured she might be on the other side,
- 19:45and you'll figured it wrong, because there's never been any other side,
- 19:48never been anybody for Burnie from the moment we missed, which is why you
- 19:51kept dating Frank Staffron, which is exactly why I kept dating Frank Saffron.
- 19:53I didn't want any jealous and gunning for Bernie. I didn't want trouble.
- 19:57Now that you got it, you don't want to let it go. What
- 20:00do you mean, mallow, Yeah, I mean if you turn yourself in
- 20:02now tonight, that's still a chance to get off easy. Yeah, all
- 20:06right, but even then the lonely bee Man swaughter prison for a few years.
- 20:10This way, it's got to be worse hiding feet from here on out
- 20:12for both of you, right up to the end, no matter when that
- 20:15is maybe long, maybe's Bernie. I don't want you riding away in jail
- 20:18and me riding away on the outside because you accidentally kill Frank Stapling well,
- 20:22come on, Bernie, let's get out in here, put in this spot
- 20:26here. Yeah, yeah, sure. Look Marlow, if if you do
- 20:30go back to Pop, tell him I wish it had been different for you.
- 20:34Why they can eat his heart out a little more. No, dice,
- 20:38kid, shut that the sight of you is making me sick. Okay,
- 20:42fella, shut it in and shut it seem best. Had been swinging
- 20:55wild, hoping that the lucky punch, no matter how low, would connect
- 20:56and Johns and tents back into the kids played differently, And as I started
- 21:02to kick the lock on the closet door, I knew now that Bernie the
- 21:04Angelous head at me and probably his father, along with the rest of the
- 21:07world, and it wouldn't give him an even break than all. It was
- 21:11the kind of thing that may be mad enough to matter Handsomer fight over the
- 21:22girl, or don't you like the way the funnytures the rain twitch may thee
- 21:26Well you get too upset about this land lady, I'll cut in on something
- 21:30minute after I get to your phone. Every cup in town is going to
- 21:33be looking for a star border because tonight Bernie the Angelo killed a man.
- 21:36Yeah, it's got nothing to do with the suff you wrest, Come on
- 21:37handful, let's settle up. There's one splinter door, a lot of little
- 21:44pieces that used to be a base, that broken box over there with them
- 21:48papers and it ain't mins. It's no charge. Okay, how much?
- 21:52How much do you want? How much? Well? Twenty five? It's
- 22:00thirty with the base thirty bucks in all handsome? Is it? What's the
- 22:06staring at? Oh? This sip the paper here fell out of the bot.
- 22:11He sowed a lot of other papers. Can't hurt you so many?
- 22:14I repeat, what's the fuck? Because it is a receipt, Grannie,
- 22:17from of all places of the partments to a receipt for a pleasant to live
- 22:18it a long time ago. Yeah, it's gotta be all right, Grannie.
- 22:23Here thirty you said, h thirty five, And if I'm right,
- 22:27sweetheart, I'll send you another vase come Christmas. I'll forget what I said
- 22:30about the phone and Bernie's being a killer because the mistake made but made all
- 22:33the way around. What kind of mistake handsome? A big one? Abuse?
- 22:37And I can't be more specific mess until I find the all limits of
- 22:40the angelo. Good night, Grannie, by midnight the San Fernando valley has
- 22:51always cone to sleep. So I covered the five miles back to the amusement
- 22:55parking close was twenty minutes, worrying all the way that even my hunch was
- 22:57wrong and I was heading no place, or that it was right and I
- 23:00was too late to keep murder from happening again. When I was out of
- 23:03my car and moving quietly in between the drop machines and stuff being gay bobbing
- 23:07animals, when the kids were gone, I knew that I could quit worrying
- 23:11all together. Becau was standing in her head in close to the merry ground
- 23:15with mister Ambrosio the Angelo opposite him, holding a gun that I had already
- 23:18seen once tonight. It was Loute Bunker the man. I figured it killed
- 23:22Frank Stephan And when I was winning a dozen hours of my play stuff right
- 23:26on turn around, why you can hit me over the back of the head
- 23:30and kill me? Luck he was accident. I found the dock when I
- 23:34work on the Merry go round. Huh, pretty smart guy, mister,
- 23:37that's the way I No, I'm broking the angelos who setify that you need
- 23:42a Frank Apone. No, my point for up. Nobody told you to
- 23:48go picking in the windows and to play drop the hanky when you went inside
- 23:51to make sure that I fell fight taffering with all your own ideas. Yeah,
- 23:53pretty and pop it bunker, mister old guitar, buttablelimit, it's about
- 24:00to look how to look out? He's hiding over there on the Merry go
- 24:03round? All right, I know I know how to get him out to
- 24:06work. We there, get on you all right, it's all right,
- 24:10that's okay. Tomorrow, just to stretch, don't worry about me, just
- 24:12to get you ready for buncle, because I'm going to go over there next
- 24:15to this switch. He can to hide no more, mister Morrow. I'm
- 24:18going to start to the merry go round and make him joy of all round.
- 24:22I go. Now, why are you save me? Tomorrow? Is
- 24:30the road to stop me? Pressure up Morrow? Not a white bunker.
- 24:36You want to make it the white hospital? Fill in the blank flat?
- 24:38Come on? Why did you kills happened? Come on? Okay? I
- 24:41dipped into the chill at the club and dummied up the books to cover he
- 24:45was gonna find out about it, so I went to this place to get
- 24:47him. When he got the first time, Yeah, they had a fish
- 24:49fight and after he left, I went in there and to finish him off
- 24:52with your feet. I see that. I went there miss tomorrow because I
- 24:56was worried about Bernardo. I had to do com How did you know that
- 25:00the angel was there? Buck, I keep talking. I heard a noise
- 25:04when I was inside. Sure less than double back he was inside then.
- 25:10But I only knew that there was an old man. I didn't know who
- 25:11he was. And until later when I came back a second time, when
- 25:14you were there and saw that handkerchief, I hadn't been there before. Then,
- 25:18when you talk about the old man here, I all, I figured
- 25:21that the Angelo initials could fit him to go. That's my boys go around
- 25:33the girls with him. They didn't run away. They didn't run away.
- 25:41That's patent to the angel. Welcome your boy at all? Well, mister
- 26:00Marlowe, is they're gonna be tomorrow morning before the police demander finish your talking
- 26:04with the mic boy and Paula. That's right, and my after that everything
- 26:08okay, okay, just to because you talk is smart to do both of
- 26:14them at the Bernado's plasters to because of what did you say? Well,
- 26:18that's what they were smart enough to do with the Angelo. I don't think
- 26:22it was easy for him to change their minds. Come back to what could
- 26:23have been prison. No, I guess or not. My thoughts are to
- 26:27kind of you that there won't be no prison and it won't be a funeral
- 26:32for me. You know it's you know, that's what the that's what I
- 26:36don't understand the mister Marlow, why when you tell the police Amanders that you
- 26:40know where to come and find a new bunker at the my place. Because
- 26:42if a depossumlu story receipts, I'd get all of mik saft I can off
- 26:48h I get off you here please? Alright? Well the receipt was by
- 26:52handkerchiefs monogram da mister Angelo, always woulda be sent to you? Is a
- 26:56gift from your son? That's put the idea in my mind. Is a
- 26:59handkerchief? If I saw a Frank Saprans could be yours, nothing out of
- 27:02Oh of course shesus are well, mister Morlow, Well are whatever you good
- 27:10to friends? Now I say goodbye. Hey, wait a minute, wait
- 27:14a minute, process, it's mine's from your place. I don't mind driving
- 27:17your home. Oh no, that's all right, because that's all right.
- 27:19I I used to wanna go round the corner. I was. I know
- 27:23the friend of mine is to beth O I I wanted to tell her him
- 27:27all about that the angelus a good the luck thank you, just the family,
- 27:33mister marlow I live her there. See. I watched him walk away,
- 27:42a quiet old man in a quiet empty street, A grateful old man
- 27:48who at three o'clock in the morning, I had to find a friend and
- 27:52tell him all about the the ANGELA good luck. D When he was around
- 27:57the corner and out of sight, I found myself wondering who the old friend
- 28:03could be. Seven minutes later, when I had driven as far as the
- 28:06corner and could see which waves and brush the end or gun, I knew
- 28:11it was less than half a block of waves, the familiar Gothic architecture stained
- 28:19black, the people witching to the sky, and yeah, his old friend.
- 28:52The Adventures of Philip Marlowe bringing you Raymond Chander's most famous character, star
- 28:56Gerald Moore and I, produced and directed by Norman mcdonne. Script is by
- 29:00Robert Mitchell and gene Leavitt. Featured in the cast were Georgia Ellis, Jaya
- 29:04Velo called the bar Bonnie Phillip and Morrison and Vivi Jennas. The special music
- 29:10is composed and conducted by Richard Lan. Be sure and be with us next
- 29:18week when Philopolo says, this time, I took a beating from mcclevy Chinese,
- 29:22ran into a twisted corps in an alley and watched this strike on the
- 29:26railroad tracks, all because of an open toad ban Jols, which was jinxed
- 29:32from the start. Welcome back, Uh. This was another great episode of
- 29:52the Adventures of Philip Marlowe and I like the ending there. There always seems
- 29:57they always seem to want to put in something that's profound or uplifting, and
- 30:03usually it's pretty good. This episode's no exception. Well, I'm going to
- 30:10address something that I have mentioned in a couple other programs. We did it,
- 30:15I think on the last episode of Man from Homicide and last week's episode
- 30:18of Nick Carter, and that is that will soon be doing the Ellery Queen
- 30:25Radio series. Classic Ellery Queen Radio had a feature with the Armchair Detectives where
- 30:36people would listen to the first part of the broadcast and would offer their opinion
- 30:41on who did it before the reveal of the actual killer. By Ellery Queen.
- 30:45However, a lot of programs have this portion of the show missing.
- 30:49There were a few non Ellery Queen programs where this wasn't included or it's been
- 30:55edited out, and others like Armed forces radio services typically have those parts edit
- 31:02it out. So I want to have thought that it would be a great
- 31:07idea to see if we could recreate these missing segments with actual listeners. Basically
- 31:17answer a couple questions about yourself and what you do, and then you take
- 31:22a guess at who done it, and we would record this by some sort
- 31:26of conference call. And I'd like to ask a couple of things. First,
- 31:30we would need probably a good number of listeners who would be willing to
- 31:34be armchair detectives. And two, if you're not interested, I'd like to
- 31:38hear what you think about the idea. Send me your thoughts of box thirteen
- 31:44at Great Detectives dot net. Now we turn to a listener comments and feedback,
- 31:49and we have one from Brian who comments regarding men from homicide and in
- 31:55particular the Donald Shellbarger murder. Wow, this show is way over the top,
- 32:00but it was enjoyable. I kept wondering if a cop in those days
- 32:04would really get away with half the stuff he did. Well. I think
- 32:10it really would probably depend on the police department, because there are some departments
- 32:17where you might be able to get away with more than others. But in
- 32:23general, this probably would not be recommended practices in a modern police department of
- 32:31the early nineteen fifties, which is why it landed on Tuesday instead of on
- 32:37Saturday, where we would air a kind of procedural show, because this is,
- 32:43as you say, pretty far away from what most policemen would do.
- 32:47But thanks so much for the comment, Brian, and that will do it
- 32:51for today. Join us tomorrow for Nick Carter, and then next Wednesday,
- 32:57be sure and listen for another apples of the Adventures of Philip Marlowe. In
- 33:01the meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net,
