- 1:24and writer, or writer and producer,
- 1:28entrepreneur, law graduate, and podcast
- 1:30commentator.
- 1:34You know, having the ability to produce
- 1:38podcasts is a very exciting thing for
- 1:41me. Let's go back to about a year ago and
- 1:44this was really not possible. A because I
- 1:48was not thinking about it and B I didn't
- 1:50have the resources or the people to push
- 1:52me to do it. Fast forward to today and I do have
- 1:57all of this in place now and this is my
- 2:00third podcast,
- 2:02Remarkable bi-weekly World
- 2:06Commentary. Welcome to this
- 2:10podcast and for today I am going to go
- 2:15back a bit in my memory bank and talk
- 2:18about a very memorable day in
- 2:22history, November
- 2:2429th
- 2:272010. A very special day,
- 2:30a day when the Low Court of Canada
- 2:35handed down a decision in my favor that
- 2:39mandated the Canadian government to make
- 2:42all of its
- 2:43websites accessible to all Canadians,
- 2:48especially so to those with
- 2:51disabilities. As a blind and vision
- 2:54impaired
- 2:56Canadian, nothing could have been more
- 3:00I'm not sure what the words are
- 3:02but nothing could have been more
- 3:05grateful,
- 3:07humbling, and simply exciting for me and
- 3:12for my
- 3:14community. Yes indeed, November 29th
- 3:192010, that was a typical fall day in
- 3:24Canada in
- 3:26Ontario and on that day I remember
- 3:30waking up, waiting and waiting, not sure
- 3:34if the announcement would come down, but
- 3:36it sure did. And when it did, it was such
- 3:42an exciting moment for me. First to get
- 3:46the news from David Baker, my lawyer, then
- 3:49from Kathy Powell of the
- 3:52CNIB, then from Melanie my friend and
- 3:56Richard Quan, the late Richard Quan, who
- 3:58tweeted
- 4:00"A landmark victory for all
- 4:03Canadians" and this is what it was,
- 4:07exactly what it was, a landmark victory
- 4:12for all Canadians. November 29th
- 4:182010, well it didn't stop there because
- 4:22then I had to get ready in a
- 4:26hurry and after a lovely breakfast
- 4:30provided to me by my mom I speeded down
- 4:33the highway with Jerry and up to my
- 4:37lawyer's office to be ready for press
- 4:41conferences, to answer all kinds of
- 4:44questions from across the
- 4:47country. I had never done this in my life
- 4:51before. I had never expected
- 4:55this but what was so very special about
- 4:58this day in addition to everything else
- 5:00that was going
- 5:02on is the fact that now the Canadian
- 5:08federal government was mandated to make
- 5:11all of its websites
- 5:14accessible and you may be thinking that
- 5:17this could not have been
- 5:19possible but believe me when I tell you
- 5:21that it was going to be possible not all
- 5:25at once but on a working basis.
- 5:31Okay, what was the fallout? Really the
- 5:34fallout is that in my mind I felt that
- 5:39this was not
- 5:41just a victory for not for me but for
- 5:47my community, for all Canadians with
- 5:52disabilities, for our kids, especially the
- 5:55kids of the
- 5:56future and those kids with a disability,
- 6:00a victory for everybody. And I was just
- 6:04very
- 6:05humbled that I was the one to have
- 6:08launched this Charter challenge with the
- 6:12help and assistance of my mentors, Robin
- 6:16East, Charn Aot, and the late John
- 6:22Ray. Yes indeed. Fast forward to
- 6:282024, almost 11 years later, and there's
- 6:32still a lot of work to be
- 6:35done. Okay yes, we've had the fallout. Yes
- 6:39we've had a lot of things take
- 6:42place. Yes, this went worldwide. It was
- 6:46recognized in the United Kingdom, in the
- 6:48United States, across in Europe, and even
- 6:53in places like India, and thanks to my
- 6:56good friend Sam who helped promote the
- 7:00news in her native country of
- 7:04India. More work needs to be
- 7:07done. We need to have greater
- 7:10accessibility of
- 7:12websites, not just lip service but real
- 7:16service, not just a duty to
- 7:19accommodate but it must be done in order
- 7:23to protect,
- 7:26recognize, and ensure that the rights of
- 7:29all Canadians with
- 7:32disabilities are adhered to and nothing
- 7:36will stop this. What we have to do is to
- 7:40keep speaking up and speaking
- 7:43out. This is definitely going to affect
- 7:46such things as online
- 7:48banking, online
- 7:51shopping, online complaint
- 7:54systems, travel
- 7:57websites, and this extends way beyond
- 8:01just
- 8:02websites. This is going to build
- 8:06awareness and break down
- 8:08barriers, also to build
- 8:11bridges. In short, it is time to make it
- 8:16better than possible. As Prime Minister
- 8:19Justin Trudeau said shortly after he
- 8:22became Prime Minister in
- 8:262015, it's all about making it better
- 8:29than
- 8:31possible. This is what this memorable day
- 8:35November 29th
- 8:382010 meant to me, and every time I think
- 8:42about it, it just sends shivers up my
- 8:46back. It makes me
- 8:49lightheaded. I am so proud to have led
- 8:52this team that made this
- 8:56possible, a Charter challenge that was a
- 8:59landmark victory for all
- 9:03Canadians. I'm Donna J Jan wishing you a
- 9:07great
- 9:09day. Donna wants to hear from you and
- 9:12invites you to write to her at Donna
