- 1:09Speaker 4: Is Old Willie Wednesday.
- 1:11Speaker 1: We thank you for being with us. Coming up, we're
- 1:14Speaker 1: going to hear from Bucky. Scott Clendenin is in. We'll
- 1:18Speaker 1: have some topics. Mallory is here with some entertainment news
- 1:26Speaker 1: and a couple of guests to talk about upcoming. We'll
- 1:31Speaker 1: be doing that. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey at Basketball Media
- 1:36Speaker 1: Days in Birmingham keeps getting asked about LSU. Sankey says
- 1:42Speaker 1: somebody who enrolls in college and then chooses to depart
- 1:47Speaker 1: is where we draw the line. We'll continue to draw
- 1:49Speaker 1: that line. The notion we had players coming back from
- 1:53Speaker 1: a professional level has been dealt with. We're trying to
- 1:55Speaker 1: find as much clarity as we can given the circumstance. Asked.
- 2:01Speaker 1: What he'd like to see from LSU to feel better
- 2:05Speaker 1: about their standing within the conference, he said, I'd like
- 2:08Speaker 1: to not be in court. But as I said, those
- 2:12Speaker 1: legal filings are speaking for themselves. In their latest filing
- 2:18Speaker 1: against LSU, the SEC reemphasizes that the case should not
- 2:23Speaker 1: be dismissed as LSU's threat to interference with the league's
- 2:27Speaker 1: First Amendment rights. If we're going to expect an experience
- 2:32Speaker 1: like Final Fours, College World Series, college football playoffs, we
- 2:37Speaker 1: have to have national standards, said Sankey. We'll continue to
- 2:40Speaker 1: work at the congressional level. There will be more conversation
- 2:44Speaker 1: about how we as a conference function. We've had rules
- 2:47Speaker 1: in the past that restrict what we do as a conference.
- 2:50Speaker 1: We'll wait and see what happens on the congressional level.
- 2:54Speaker 1: In the briefings, it's not good for LSU. They asked
- 2:59Speaker 1: the court to find that no live dispute exists while
- 3:03Speaker 1: keeping the door wide open for LSU to continue defying
- 3:06Speaker 1: the professionalism rules and violating principles of institutional control without
- 3:12Speaker 1: risking termination. None of the defendant's arguments support that outcome.
- 3:18Speaker 1: They are reemphasizing that, hey, We're serious about this. It
- 3:25Speaker 1: sounds a little bit like when SMU got the death penalty.
- 3:30Speaker 1: They kept telling them to stop. They wouldn't stop. We'll
- 3:35Speaker 1: see what happens. Michigan, and I didn't even know this
- 3:39Speaker 1: were possible. It's like picking up players from the waiver
- 3:43Speaker 1: wire in the NFL. Michigan's getting reinforcements. The Wolverines are
- 3:49Speaker 1: adding former Miami tight end Alex Baumann and former Boise
- 3:54Speaker 1: State cornerback Jeremiah Irby via the transfer portal. This according
- 3:59Speaker 1: to CBS Sports. Both players recently granted TROs, giving them
- 4:04Speaker 1: an extra year of eligibility, and they've enrolled at Michigan.
- 4:10Speaker 1: They both played key roles for their teams a year ago.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Bauman worked out at Miami's Pro Day but didn't secure
- 4:18Speaker 1: an NFL roster spot. Irby played two years at Cal,
- 4:23Speaker 1: transferred to Boise State, was a cog in the Broncos'
- 4:27Speaker 1: defense last fall. More college football tonight. Kennesaw State, Missouri State,
- 4:37Speaker 1: Western Kentucky, Sam Houston. The Bearcats are on ESPN tonight.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Last night, in case you missed it, Middle Tennessee beat
- 4:47Speaker 1: Delaware 33-30 and Jacksonville State over Florida International 27-24. The
- 4:55Speaker 1: Astros are not renewing Joe Espada's contract. He was the
- 5:00Speaker 1: Astros' bench coach from 2018 to 2023 and has been
- 5:03Speaker 1: their manager for the last three seasons with a one-loss
- 5:06Speaker 1: record of. 256 and. 229. including two postseason wildcard experiences.
- 5:20Speaker 1: They announced that pitching coach Josh Miller, first base coach
- 5:25Speaker 1: Dave Clark, field coordinator Jason Bell, hitting coach Victor Rodriguez,
- 5:31Speaker 1: longtime bullpen catcher Javier Bracamonte, and bench coach Omar Lopez
- 5:38Speaker 1: will all be offered opportunities within the So we'll see
- 5:46Speaker 1: what happens with that. Don Mattingly, who took the Phillies
- 5:51Speaker 1: to the postseason after taking over 28 games into the season,
- 5:55Speaker 1: will return to manage the Phillies after signing a two-year
- 5:59Speaker 1: deal today. Mattingly took the reins from Rob Thompson, who
- 6:04Speaker 1: was fired in April. The Phillies forced a Game 3
- 6:08Speaker 1: in the NL Wild Card Series against the Braves before
- 6:11Speaker 1: losing 6-2. They've moved up the start of tomorrow's ALCS
- 6:19Speaker 1: game by five hours because of weather. Major League Baseball
- 6:25Speaker 1: announced the game would start originally at 5 o'clock, now noon.
- 6:37Speaker 1: The Rays' Guardians were off after opening the series at Tropicana. Again,
- 6:43Speaker 1: rain is forecast in Northeast Ohio for tomorrow night, so
- 6:48Speaker 1: they've moved the game to a noon start tomorrow. Tonight, Brewers-Dodgers.
- 6:56Speaker 1: The Brewers have won the first two games of the series.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Blake Snell on the mound for tonight for the Dodgers.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Otani is in the lineup. Finalists for the Gold Glove.
- 7:10Speaker 1: In the American League, Jacob deGrom, Rangers, one of three finalists.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Christian Walker, Astros, first base, one of three finalists. Wyatt Lankford, Rangers,
- 7:25Speaker 1: left field. Evan Carter, Rangers, center field. Utility, Ezekiel Durant, Rangers.
- 7:35Speaker 1: For a team with so many Gold Glove finalists, they
- 7:38Speaker 1: were terrible on defense this year. Cam Smith of the
- 7:42Speaker 1: Astros in right field, also a finalist. The only one
- 7:46Speaker 1: that deserves it is Ezekiel Durant. He played second base,
- 7:52Speaker 1: third base, shortstop in all three outfield positions and racked
- 7:58Speaker 1: up a 4.4 war, tying for sixth in MLB with
- 8:04Speaker 1: plus 17, plus 11 at shortstop. Ezekiel Duran was the
- 8:11Speaker 1: MVP of the Rangers this year and deserves a gold glove.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Texas head basketball coach Sean Miller, media days on Jordan
- 8:23Speaker 1: Pope ending up at Texas A & M. Said Miller,
- 8:28Speaker 1: I'm quoting here, Jordan Pope was at the forefront of
- 8:32Speaker 1: our team being resilient and at our best in March.
- 8:36Speaker 1: His performance was Leadership and belief grew as the year
- 8:40Speaker 1: went on. He played with a broken foot in the
- 8:44Speaker 1: Sweet 16. He had no reason to do it, and
- 8:47Speaker 1: he played. When somebody does that for you, that's unforgettable.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I have more respect and love for him than just
- 8:54Speaker 1: about any player I've coached. I respect his move. If
- 8:58Speaker 1: I would have known he could come back, maybe he
- 9:01Speaker 1: would still be here. I would have loved to welcome
- 9:04Speaker 1: him back, but we didn't have that option. It will
- 9:07Speaker 1: be awkward to play against him, but I wish him
- 9:10Speaker 1: nothing but the best. I want nothing but the best
- 9:15Speaker 1: for him. And part two, Stars Avalanche tonight in Denver
- 9:27Speaker 1: on TNT. Last night was classic. I'm telling you, it
- 9:34Speaker 1: was a playoff game tonight. six games into the season.
- 9:41Speaker 1: And Nate McKinnon got his nose broken by Ropey Hintz
- 9:45Speaker 1: in one of two fights in the game. It was
- 9:48Speaker 1: McKinnon who put Hintz out of the playoffs last year
- 9:54Speaker 1: or late in the season. They don't like each other.
- 9:59Speaker 1: They played last year. night. It was chippy. They play
- 10:02Speaker 1: again tonight. You need to watch. It was a great
- 10:07Speaker 1: regular season game last night. There aren't many of those,
- 10:12Speaker 1: but I'll be watching tonight. Stars, Avalanche, 730 on TNT
- 10:19Speaker 1: and True TV. Game two of their back-to-back. What a
- 10:28Speaker 1: game last night. Ropey Hintz broke Nate McKinnon's face shield
- 10:34Speaker 1: and smashed his nose. Left him bloody. We may have
- 10:41Speaker 1: lost the game, but we won the fight. And after all,
- 10:45Speaker 1: isn't that the most important thing? So we'll see what
- 10:51Speaker 1: happens tonight. It was fun. So a couple of things.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Tomorrow on the Clark Eisenhower Outdoor Edition, Captain Dano Wise
- 11:04Speaker 1: joins us. He is an artist, a photographer, an outdoor writer,

- 14:28Speaker 8: of you comes as sweet and clear as.
- 14:36Speaker 9: Moonlight.
- 14:39Speaker 1: It is Old Willie Wednesday. Thank you for tuning in.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Scott Clendenin will join us here in about 15 minutes
- 14:46Speaker 1: or so. Mallory is here with some entertainment news in
- 14:50Speaker 1: the second hour of the program. Right now, we want
- 14:54Speaker 1: to hear from Bucky. He met with local media yesterday.
- 15:05Speaker 10: Mikey, what do you feel like were the big takeaways
- 15:07Speaker 10: from the scrimmage?
- 15:10Speaker 11: It was good. I mean, it's always good to play
- 15:12Speaker 11: somebody different. I think the team we played gave us
- 15:14Speaker 11: a great look. You know, we treat these scrimmages just
- 15:18Speaker 11: to get a look for kind of finding rotations, and
- 15:21Speaker 11: so we played guys in different spots, and, you know,
- 15:24Speaker 11: that's what the point of these things are. But overall,
- 15:28Speaker 11: we're probably headed where we were this time last year,
- 15:30Speaker 11: which is good to see. Players I thought would play
- 15:32Speaker 11: well played well, and, you know, Had a couple guys
- 15:35Speaker 11: I thought, you know, really kind of took it to
- 15:37Speaker 11: another level, which was good to see. Who were maybe
- 15:40Speaker 11: some of those.
- 15:41Speaker 12: Guys you felt like took it to another level that.
- 15:43Speaker 4: You were really impressed with?
- 15:44Speaker 11: Yeah, you know, and Cade Phillips, he'd come back from injury,
- 15:46Speaker 11: and so he's gradually getting there. And, you know, the
- 15:49Speaker 11: first time the lights come on, you could just see
- 15:51Speaker 11: his competitive will, you know, really shine through. And I
- 15:56Speaker 11: thought that was really good to see. You know, obviously P.J.
- 15:59Speaker 11: is going to get to the line at will. Pope
- 16:02Speaker 11: was able to really play well. But our role players,
- 16:05Speaker 11: you know, and I say role players, guys just like
- 16:07Speaker 11: Lucas Walls and Nico, you know, guys that their first
- 16:11Speaker 11: year kind of in this level of basketball, they did
- 16:15Speaker 11: what they do well, and I thought that's most important.
- 16:18Speaker 10: We talked to PJ, and he kind of described your
- 16:21Speaker 10: style and saying that it's got him tired, and he
- 16:23Speaker 10: said it laughing. So have you seen the new guys
- 16:25Speaker 10: kind of acclimate to what you're looking for at this point?
- 16:27Speaker 11: Yeah, we're in better shape. Last year we weren't in
- 16:29Speaker 11: great shape early. We've had more practices and been able
- 16:32Speaker 11: to play more five-on-five because we're further along. But, you know,
- 16:37Speaker 11: like I thought that we weren't in great shape until
- 16:39Speaker 11: about eight games in last year, and so one of
- 16:42Speaker 11: our goals this year above all else, by the time
- 16:44Speaker 11: we get to game one, we're going to get in shape.
- 16:47Speaker 11: Even if practice is going to be sloppier because we're
- 16:48Speaker 11: going longer with no breaks, we're in better shape right now.
- 16:52Speaker 1: When you're kind of installing your system, especially with a
- 16:55Speaker 1: bunch of new guys.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Is the defense the thing that takes.
- 16:59Speaker 1: The longest or the offense?
- 17:00Speaker 10: What's kind of the more labor-intensive side of the ball?
- 17:03Speaker 11: Good question. I think that it's just making quick decisions.
- 17:06Speaker 11: That's both sides of the ball because there is no
- 17:09Speaker 11: because we're going to pick up on a made shot
- 17:11Speaker 11: or a missed shot on defense or we're going to
- 17:12Speaker 11: push it on a made shot or a missed shot
- 17:14Speaker 11: on offense. So there is no getting stuck in the
- 17:16Speaker 11: last play. So we always say when we're recruiting, I
- 17:19Speaker 11: really want to have guys that can process quickly. I mean,
- 17:24Speaker 11: I run a 40 in seven seconds, and you look
- 17:28Speaker 11: like you're running in four seconds. Yes. Okay. But if
- 17:33Speaker 11: you have a delay when that ball is passed, and
- 17:35Speaker 11: I don't have a delay, I may actually be faster
- 17:37Speaker 11: than you, as crazy as that sounds. And so we've
- 17:41Speaker 11: got to have guys who can process quickly. PJ had mentioned.
- 17:44Speaker 13: That this system helps him the most improve his defense.
- 17:48Speaker 12: I'm curious just what improvements you've seen from him defensively
- 17:52Speaker 12: compared to.
- 17:53Speaker 11: When he first arrived? P.J. is a super smart player.
- 17:56Speaker 11: I don't really buy it. People can have different opinions
- 18:02Speaker 11: of different players, positive and negative, in the recruiting process.
- 18:05Speaker 11: I kind of go with my eyes a lot. And
- 18:08Speaker 11: what I can tell you is P.J. knows how to
- 18:10Speaker 11: play basketball. So he sees rotations. He makes the right pass.
- 18:13Speaker 11: He's elite at getting fouled. I'm just very impressed with
- 18:19Speaker 11: him coaching him, just overall. The pace he plays at
- 18:23Speaker 11: is a unique pace. On offense, he's not even trying,
- 18:28Speaker 11: but he's just at that controlled pace. For the old-school ballers,
- 18:33Speaker 11: he's like a 1980s player. He gets in the lane,
- 18:35Speaker 11: slows down, has every kind of shot. He can float
- 18:38Speaker 11: it up 10 feet in the air. He can just
- 18:42Speaker 11: hit stepbacks. He's got all kinds of weird stuff to
- 18:44Speaker 11: his game, and that's what makes it hard to stop.
- 18:47Speaker 11: It's unique. But he's been a joy to coach because
- 18:49Speaker 11: he's playing winning basketball. Like, he's doing the things that
- 18:52Speaker 11: will equate to winning.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Do you like him kind of initiating?
- 18:55Speaker 14: I know there's not, like, always a set point guard,
- 18:57Speaker 14: but do you like him.
- 18:58Speaker 11: Being the key initiator?
- 18:59Speaker 8: And how much on-ball do you like him having?
- 19:02Speaker 11: Yeah, I think it's got to be a variety, you know.
- 19:04Speaker 11: I think, you know, in transition, he's a lead. If
- 19:07Speaker 11: you can pitch it up to him in transition, great
- 19:08Speaker 11: things are going to happen. But he's also a guy
- 19:11Speaker 11: that when he's initiating the offense and he's in the
- 19:13Speaker 11: middle thirds of the court, he's a problem. And he's
- 19:16Speaker 11: a problem because he'll give it up to– You know,
- 19:19Speaker 11: but great scorers can get to the free throw line, and, like,
- 19:23Speaker 11: he's able to get to the free throw line consistently.
- 19:25Speaker 12: What have you seen from just McKenzie these last couple
- 19:28Speaker 12: of months, especially as he's really maybe kind of hitting
- 19:31Speaker 12: his stride back fully at 100%?
- 19:32Speaker 11: Yeah, he's going to have a good year, really good year. Like,
- 19:35Speaker 11: he's improved on a lot of things. His body's great.
- 19:38Speaker 11: He's powerful. He shoots at will. He's making good decisions. Like,
- 19:41Speaker 11: he's not trying to get outside of his bubble, and
- 19:45Speaker 11: he's too good a player to need to get outside
- 19:47Speaker 11: of his bubble. You know what I mean? And so
- 19:49Speaker 11: he's just kind of... staying with what he does well.
- 19:51Speaker 11: And the game's easy for him right now because of that.
- 19:55Speaker 11: So I think he'll have a really good year.
- 19:57Speaker 12: What was the biggest thing he had to do to,
- 20:00Speaker 12: you know, trust himself again and get back into a
- 20:02Speaker 12: flow of where he was maybe?
- 20:04Speaker 11: I think it was just getting in physical good shape.
- 20:08Speaker 11: You know, like when you're in really good shape everything
- 20:11Speaker 11: else is not as hard. So I think that was
- 20:15Speaker 11: probably the thing there. He's able to play through fatigue now,
- 20:18Speaker 11: and that's when he's playing his best.
- 20:22Speaker 4: You told us a lot last year that this could
- 20:23Speaker 4: be a tournament team. This could be a tournament team.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Watch.
- 20:26Speaker 10: What do you feel like the ceiling is of this team,
- 20:29Speaker 10: and or where do you think, where would you like
- 20:32Speaker 10: the program to be in year two after the year
- 20:34Speaker 10: that y'all had last year?
- 20:35Speaker 11: Yeah, you know, what you want to be doing is
- 20:38Speaker 11: with any team you have, you want to reach their potential.
- 20:40Speaker 11: You know, what does your potential mean, right? You know, and, like,
- 20:43Speaker 11: I think that if you can compete in our league,
- 20:45Speaker 11: you can compete versus anybody, right? Now, you know when
- 20:48Speaker 11: you get to the NCAA tournament, if you battle hard
- 20:51Speaker 11: to get there, you know your route, you know, you
- 20:53Speaker 11: have your route. You've got to put together your best
- 20:55Speaker 11: games there at the end of the season. And hopefully
- 20:58Speaker 11: we find out that if we're playing really good basketball
- 21:01Speaker 11: and we can play A-plus basketball, it means we can
- 21:03Speaker 11: compete versus anybody. And that's what you hope to find out. But,
- 21:06Speaker 11: you know, look, the reality of basketball is different than
- 21:09Speaker 11: a lot of sports. And you play nearly 40 games
- 21:11Speaker 11: over the course of the season. Look, you can lose
- 21:17Speaker 11: three games in a row. In other sports, the season's over.
- 21:20Speaker 11: You lose five games in a row and win the
- 21:22Speaker 11: national championship. And so I think that you're going to
- 21:25Speaker 11: find out a lot about your team, their resiliency as
- 21:29Speaker 11: this goes along, because you're going to play the gauntlet
- 21:31Speaker 11: of the SEC. which will be the best league in
- 21:34Speaker 11: the history of college basketball this year. And we have
- 21:37Speaker 11: the second-hardest schedule. So, like, you're going to find out about, like,
- 21:42Speaker 11: can we stay together and everybody stay together to keep
- 21:44Speaker 11: trucking forward so we're our best version of ourselves at
- 21:46Speaker 11: the end of the year.
- 21:47Speaker 15: How have you seen McKenzie's kind of mentality and energy
- 21:51Speaker 15: kind of shift headed into this year?
- 21:54Speaker 11: He's just– he's always been really focused, but I just
- 21:56Speaker 11: think the game slowed down for him, right? It's like,
- 22:00Speaker 11: you know– He's not having to go to the game
- 22:02Speaker 11: just lets the game come to him. The really good players,
- 22:04Speaker 11: they can do that. I think defensively he's gotten better.
- 22:10Speaker 11: When the game slows down for great players, they're dangerous.
- 22:13Speaker 12: He had said that rebounding was something in particular that
- 22:16Speaker 12: he's really focused on. Have you seen him maybe get
- 22:19Speaker 12: better in that area? Do you match him up with
- 22:22Speaker 12: a guy like Cade to maybe try to build something
- 22:24Speaker 12: like that during practice?
- 22:25Speaker 11: Well, he's tough. It's like see ball, get ball. There's
- 22:31Speaker 11: no great rebounders that are soft. You don't want guys
- 22:36Speaker 11: who are afraid of getting their sweat on somebody. You
- 22:40Speaker 11: want guys that seek out contact. He'll go through players
- 22:43Speaker 11: to get the ball. And our team this year will
- 22:46Speaker 11: be a better rebounding team for sure. We're longer. We're stronger.
- 22:49Speaker 11: We'll be better attacking the basket, and we'll be better
- 22:52Speaker 11: finishing at the rim, right? So I think all those
- 22:55Speaker 11: things can help you in late-season basketball because one of
- 22:58Speaker 11: the most important things in late-season basketball is being able
- 23:02Speaker 11: to clean the glass and get to the free-throw line.
- 23:05Speaker 11: And if you can't slash, you're not getting the free-throw line.
- 23:07Speaker 11: The other thing that great slashing will do is free
- 23:09Speaker 11: up three-point shooters because the defense is going to have
- 23:11Speaker 11: to collapse and make a decision.
- 23:13Speaker 1: We've asked about P.J.
- 23:14Speaker 16: Haggerty.
- 23:14Speaker 10: Is that kind of the difference, and not taking away
- 23:16Speaker 10: anything that you guys had last year, but is that
- 23:19Speaker 10: ability for him to get inside and make plays like
- 23:22Speaker 10: that different than maybe what you had last year and
- 23:24Speaker 10: how he'd be able to elevate.
- 23:26Speaker 11: This offensive attack? Yeah, I mean, well, last year we
- 23:29Speaker 11: were one of the smallest teams in Power 4 basketball,
- 23:31Speaker 11: the players that played consistently. We were not a great
- 23:35Speaker 11: slashing team at guard. Marcus Hill was a slasher. Rashawn
- 23:38Speaker 11: Agee was a post player. But other than that, there
- 23:41Speaker 11: was not a guy you just give it to and say,
- 23:43Speaker 11: go get a bucket. This team has several guys that
- 23:46Speaker 11: can beat their man, several guys. I've mentioned this before.
- 23:51Speaker 11: Last year, that group was such a fun group that
- 23:54Speaker 11: I'll always admire because they were an overachieving group in
- 24:00Speaker 11: a lot of ways. First, defensively, to be that small,
- 24:03Speaker 11: they had to really scrap it out. But offensively, this
- 24:07Speaker 11: is how that group had to score. Drive creates some
- 24:10Speaker 11: type of help. 25 drives later and 25 passes with
- 24:15Speaker 11: somebody sitting just like this ready to make a three,
- 24:18Speaker 11: we can get there and we might score that basket.
- 24:20Speaker 11: That's just kind of what it was. And it was
- 24:22Speaker 11: great because they bought into that and they were unselfish
- 24:24Speaker 11: enough to do that. Now, you know, we'll have some
- 24:27Speaker 11: of those possessions, but we'll also have someone just go
- 24:29Speaker 11: beat their man and go dunk it or get fouled.
- 24:32Speaker 11: And the later the season goes, you got to have that, right?
- 24:36Speaker 11: I mean, you just got to have that. And that's
- 24:38Speaker 11: kind of one of the strengths of some of the
- 24:40Speaker 11: strengths of these players is their ability to live in
- 24:42Speaker 11: the paint.
- 24:44Speaker 4: So PJ said that he expects us to be a team.
- 24:46Speaker 1: That's going to have a lot of guys shooting 35
- 24:48Speaker 1: to 40 plus percent from three. How, what is your
- 24:51Speaker 1: sort of expectation for this team's ability.
- 24:53Speaker 11: To hit from deep?
- 24:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:54Speaker 11: If we take the right shots, we should be above 35.
- 24:57Speaker 11: You know, I mean, that's shootings about two things, ability
- 25:00Speaker 11: and then decision-making right. Like me, the best shooter in
- 25:04Speaker 11: the world. But if you do a bad decision maker,
- 25:05Speaker 11: when to shoot, it's not very good. I think that we'll,
- 25:09Speaker 11: They're unselfish enough to make the right decisions. We'll keep
- 25:12Speaker 11: playing like us and all the skill work we do
- 25:14Speaker 11: and the number threes I make these guys shoot a week.
- 25:16Speaker 11: It should be like breathing when we get out there.
- 25:19Speaker 11: Last season, because we didn't have a lot of slashing,
- 25:22Speaker 11: they were able to hug shooters late in the season,
- 25:24Speaker 11: knowing that the only guy that really created an advantage
- 25:26Speaker 11: was Marcus and Rashawn. Everybody else was like, just hug them.
- 25:30Speaker 11: This year, if they want to hug shooters, we're going
- 25:32Speaker 11: to go rack it. And so the defense will collapse,
- 25:34Speaker 11: which is going to lead to more shooting. But, you know...
- 25:36Speaker 11: All these guys, we track every shot they've ever took
- 25:39Speaker 11: since they've been here when they got here June 1st, literally. Like,
- 25:41Speaker 11: every shot's tracked. When they're in here, we're tracking it.
- 25:45Speaker 11: We have every stat, every deal, and their numbers are
- 25:47Speaker 11: going up a lot right now. Do you expect there
- 25:50Speaker 11: to be more rim protection this year?
- 25:52Speaker 4: Like, how confident are you in these bigs, McKenzie, Jammies?
- 25:55Speaker 11: Well, I mean, it couldn't be worse. I mean, so,
- 26:00Speaker 11: I mean, I love Ruben Dominguez, but, I mean, when
- 26:03Speaker 11: Ruben Dominguez is your forward, I mean– I haven't seen
- 26:05Speaker 11: him touch the net recently. No, I like our guys.
- 26:10Speaker 11: They're long. They can play above the rim. I've seen
- 26:13Speaker 11: more shots blocked in warm-ups than I saw the entire
- 26:16Speaker 11: season last year. So we'll be better around the rim,
- 26:20Speaker 11: and we're better keeping teams from scoring at the rim
- 26:23Speaker 11: on us for sure.
- 26:24Speaker 14: Having that offensive creation, does it help you and your
- 26:27Speaker 14: coaching staff maybe focus a little bit more on the
- 26:29Speaker 14: offseason to get everybody honed in defensively, or is it
- 26:32Speaker 14: still spending just as much time to work on that.
- 26:34Speaker 11: Offense and get it ready for the regular season? Yeah,
- 26:35Speaker 11: it's about the same. We just had more time with it,
- 26:37Speaker 11: you know? Like, we just had more time. I mean,
- 26:39Speaker 11: I think our biggest challenge is going to be combination
- 26:42Speaker 11: of players who are going to play. This season, you know,
- 26:44Speaker 11: we're waiting on a couple of situations to know what
- 26:46Speaker 11: our full roster is going to look like, like a
- 26:48Speaker 11: lot of teams are. But I think that my biggest
- 26:53Speaker 11: challenge is going to be what players. You know, you're
- 26:56Speaker 11: simply not going to play 17 guys every night. We've
- 26:59Speaker 11: always gone 10 deep, right? Sometimes we'll go more than that.
- 27:03Speaker 11: And trust me, y'all know me, I'm not married to anybody.
- 27:06Speaker 11: I mean, you know, I've had players, people like this guy.
- 27:09Speaker 11: I'm not married to someone not just game to game,
- 27:12Speaker 11: media timeout to media timeout. I'm going to roll with
- 27:14Speaker 11: the guys that are going to lay it down for us.
- 27:16Speaker 11: And I think that's going to be the thing is, like,
- 27:18Speaker 11: who earns those minutes? Because it's not going to be given,
- 27:23Speaker 11: you know, and it's not going to be given. We've
- 27:24Speaker 11: got a bunch of good players, which is a good
- 27:25Speaker 11: problem to have. And then those guys, maybe they're not
- 27:29Speaker 11: playing as much as they like. Can they stay the course?
- 27:32Speaker 11: so that they can be the best version of themselves.
- 27:36Speaker 11: Because who knows, they can roll right back in and
- 27:38Speaker 11: be playing back to playing more and more minutes. But
- 27:41Speaker 11: that's the way that I think that's going to be
- 27:43Speaker 11: our biggest challenge.
- 27:44Speaker 12: What's the latest with Ryland and Pope and just.
- 27:46Speaker 11: Kind of where they're at? I can't comment on it, but,
- 27:49Speaker 11: you know, there's no something here in the next couple weeks, hopefully.
- 27:51Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 27:52Speaker 12: Did Ryland play in the scrimmage.
- 27:53Speaker 11: The other day? He didn't. He's got a hand issue
- 27:57Speaker 11: going on right now. He'll be back soon, though. Yeah.
- 28:01Speaker 1: That's Bucky. We found out that Ryland's got an injury.
- 28:06Speaker 1: He said he'll be back soon. Did not play. Pope
- 28:10Speaker 1: did not play. They're still working on eligibility. Pop Isaacs,
- 28:17Speaker 1: if you didn't know, is in Oklahoma. I think this
- 28:19Speaker 1: is his 17th year. But he said today at media
- 28:25Speaker 1: days how much he liked Bucky, liked the team, liked
- 28:29Speaker 1: playing for Bucky. said, I wish, uh, they're, they're here
- 28:34Speaker 1: at a different time than we are. I wish they
- 28:37Speaker 1: were here so we could, you know, I could say
- 28:39Speaker 1: hello and see him. Um, I think Bucky likes this team. Um,
- 28:46Speaker 1: you know, if, if Ryland Griffin and Jordan Pope are
- 28:50Speaker 1: eligible to play just more firepower, more guys that can
- 28:57Speaker 1: hit shots, more experience, um, So we'll see how all
- 29:03Speaker 1: of that plays itself out. They will have a scrimmage,
- 29:09Speaker 1: an exhibition game at SMU a week from Sunday at
- 29:15Speaker 1: Moody Coliseum. And then a week after that, the season
- 29:23Speaker 1: starts in November. So we got that going for us,
- 29:26Speaker 1: which is nice. All right. Scott Clendenham will be here.
- 29:31Speaker 1: We'll have some topics. His favorite manager got fired today.
- 29:36Speaker 1: We'll see what his reaction is to that and who
- 29:39Speaker 1: might respond. replace him. There is an article in The
- 29:44Speaker 1: Athletic that is very interesting. It ranks the 10 most

- 34:49Speaker 1: for a manager.
- 34:50Speaker 4: Hi, Chip.
- 34:51Speaker 1: Who's number one on your list?
- 34:55Speaker 4: Oh, who's number one on my list?
- 34:57Speaker 11: Yep.
- 34:58Speaker 4: Do I get to hire a GM first? No, no,
- 35:01Speaker 4: I do not.
- 35:02Speaker 1: No. You already have a GM.
- 35:08Speaker 4: Who's that?
- 35:08Speaker 1: Jeff Bagwell.
- 35:10Speaker 4: Oh, well, if it's Jeff Bagwell, then the coach is
- 35:13Speaker 4: Brad Ausmus.
- 35:14Speaker 1: You think he'll come? Or you think he's going to
- 35:17Speaker 1: wait and take Aaron Boone's spot?
- 35:20Speaker 4: I think Brad Osmus is going to be the general
- 35:22Speaker 4: manager of the Astros.
- 35:24Speaker 8: Really?
- 35:24Speaker 1: Yes. Okay.
- 35:26Speaker 4: So the list that the Chronicle had, I will tell
- 35:29Speaker 4: you two no's that are on the list.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Okay.
- 35:33Speaker 4: They had Alex Cora and Carlos Beltran on the list. Really?
- 35:38Speaker 4: And neither of them are getting the Astros job.
- 35:42Speaker 1: I don't know. They were pretty instrumental in that World
- 35:46Speaker 1: Series run.
- 35:47Speaker 4: Yeah, they were. I like Rocco Baldelli.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Really? Yes. Where is he?
- 35:54Speaker 4: He is with the special assistant for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 36:02Speaker 1: Okay. You can't go wrong hiring a Dodger.
- 36:08Speaker 4: I like, speaking of Dodgers... I like Danny Lehman, the
- 36:13Speaker 4: Dodgers bench coach. Is he on that list you have?
- 36:17Speaker 1: He is not.
- 36:18Speaker 4: Okay. 40 years old.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Okay.
- 36:21Speaker 14: Younger.
- 36:22Speaker 17: Younger.
- 36:22Speaker 4: From the Woodlands. Played at Rice. Played for the Twins.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Okay.
- 36:27Speaker 4: Went as high as AAA as a catcher. Like catchers.
- 36:30Speaker 1: Okay.
- 36:31Speaker 4: Like catchers that become managers.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Yep. A lot of catchers become managers. Yep.
- 36:36Speaker 4: So those are my two picks. Picks. Isn't it crazy
- 36:39Speaker 4: they have twins backgrounds?
- 36:41Speaker 1: How about Jeff Bannister, former Rangers manager?
- 36:48Speaker 11: No?
- 36:48Speaker 1: Is that a no?
- 36:49Speaker 4: It's a no.
- 36:50Speaker 1: Okay. Just saying. He played at U of H.
- 36:54Speaker 4: Did he win anything?
- 36:56Speaker 1: Won two AL West titles with the Rangers.
- 36:59Speaker 11: Yeah?
- 37:00Speaker 4: Win a World Series?
- 37:01Speaker 1: Didn't win a World Series.
- 37:03Speaker 4: Win playoff games?
- 37:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:06Speaker 4: Well, that's better than my last manager.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Exactly. Morgan Innsburg.
- 37:11Speaker 4: Morgan Innsburg was on the Chronicle list.
- 37:13Speaker 1: Okay.
- 37:14Speaker 4: I want somebody that's.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Hey, anybody from the Durham Bulls, you've got to look at.
- 37:20Speaker 11: Well.
- 37:21Speaker 1: He managed the Durham Bulls. You've got to look at him.
- 37:23Speaker 4: Well, I mean, I just was in Durham this last spring.
- 37:26Speaker 1: I went to the stadium.
- 37:27Speaker 11: And?
- 37:28Speaker 1: Was the moose shooting out smoke?
- 37:30Speaker 4: The bull, you mean?
- 37:31Speaker 13: The bull?
- 37:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:32Speaker 11: No.
- 37:32Speaker 3: No.
- 37:33Speaker 4: It was in the afternoon.
- 37:34Speaker 1: Oh, okay. Yeah. Well, just in the evening?
- 37:37Speaker 4: Well, they weren't playing a game.
- 37:39Speaker 1: John Gibbons.
- 37:41Speaker 11: Who?
- 37:42Speaker 1: Binge coach of the Mets.
- 37:44Speaker 16: No.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Two stints in Toronto.
- 37:49Speaker 2: No.
- 37:49Speaker 1: Okay. Brandon Hyde, AL Manager of the Year with the
- 37:54Speaker 1: Orioles just three years ago.
- 37:56Speaker 4: And they got fired.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Got fired.
- 37:59Speaker 4: I like him.
- 38:00Speaker 1: He's an advisor with the Rays.
- 38:02Speaker 4: I thought the Orioles were going to be better.
- 38:04Speaker 1: Me too.
- 38:05Speaker 4: Orioles in Detroit, I thought were about to have a run.
- 38:08Speaker 1: Me too. You mentioned Danny Lehman.
- 38:10Speaker 4: Yep. I like Danny Lehman.
- 38:11Speaker 1: How about Martin Maldonado? Another catcher.
- 38:17Speaker 11: No.
- 38:18Speaker 14: No?
- 38:20Speaker 4: Go from being a player right to being a manager?
- 38:22Speaker 1: No.
- 38:22Speaker 4: You've got to put in some time.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Albert Pujols.
- 38:29Speaker 4: Albert Pujols would be interesting. Albert Pujols has been doing
- 38:33Speaker 4: the Winter Leagues.
- 38:34Speaker 16: Yep.
- 38:35Speaker 4: And who's he been working with during the regular season?
- 38:38Speaker 1: Let's see. Leonis, Dominican Republic, World Baseball Classic. I don't
- 38:43Speaker 1: know if he's been working with anybody. Doesn't say.
- 38:46Speaker 4: Okay.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Rodney Linares. Linares.
- 38:49Speaker 4: Bench coach for the Rays.
- 38:50Speaker 1: How about that? Another Rays organization guy.
- 38:53Speaker 4: Well, look at it from the.
- 38:57Speaker 1: He's already managed Carlos Correa and Jose Altuve.
- 39:00Speaker 10: Yes.
- 39:02Speaker 4: But look at it from what Crane said.
- 39:06Speaker 1: I don't know what Crane said.
- 39:07Speaker 4: Crane said, I look at the teams that are doing
- 39:11Speaker 4: the best without a lot of money, and that's something
- 39:14Speaker 4: that I want to emulate.
- 39:15Speaker 11: Rays?
- 39:16Speaker 4: The Rays are one of those teams.
- 39:17Speaker 1: They're certainly one of those teams.
- 39:19Speaker 4: The Twins have certainly been one of those teams.
- 39:22Speaker 8: Yep.
- 39:24Speaker 4: So....
- 39:26Speaker 1: David Ross.
- 39:29Speaker 4: I don't think he did any with the Cubs worth anything.
- 39:32Speaker 1: He didn't. He was 262 and 284 as manager of
- 39:36Speaker 1: the Cubs.
- 39:37Speaker 4: Coming off when the Cubs had talent. But I think
- 39:38Speaker 4: he'd be perfect for Houston. When the Cubs had talent.
- 39:42Speaker 1: Yeah, they did have talent. No doubt.
- 39:45Speaker 4: Because they fired, what's his name, who had been good
- 39:48Speaker 4: with the Rays.
- 39:48Speaker 1: So if Ausmus is the GM, who will he bring in?
- 39:55Speaker 4: Well, he has no power.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Well, that's true.
- 39:59Speaker 4: Bagwell has the power.
- 40:00Speaker 1: That's true. But they are buddies. Oh, yeah, they're best buddies.
- 40:04Speaker 1: He may listen.
- 40:05Speaker 4: Well, that's why I think he's going to be the
- 40:07Speaker 4: general manager.
- 40:08Speaker 1: Okay.
- 40:10Speaker 4: Because I think he understands this is like the Dallas Cowboys.
- 40:16Speaker 4: He understands that there is somebody that you have to
- 40:20Speaker 4: keep on your good side. Okay? With the Dallas Cowboys,
- 40:25Speaker 4: you have to keep Stephen Jones on your good side.
- 40:29Speaker 4: It's not Jerry you have to worry about. It's the
- 40:32Speaker 4: person who actually talks to Jerry that he listens to.
- 40:35Speaker 4: And the only one that is now is Stephen Jones.
- 40:39Speaker 4: So who does Crane listen to? He listens to Bagwell.
- 40:44Speaker 4: So if you keep Bagwell on your good side, then
- 40:48Speaker 4: you're in a great spot.
- 40:52Speaker 1: Okay. We've got more lists today.
- 40:56Speaker 4: Who are the Rangers going to hire as manager?
- 41:01Speaker 1: I don't think they're firing their manager. Because if you
- 41:06Speaker 1: fire a manager... I believe he still has a contract.
- 41:11Speaker 1: You have to pay that off. You have to pay
- 41:13Speaker 1: somebody new. They're not going to spend that kind of money.
- 41:15Speaker 4: They're not going to spend any money?
- 41:17Speaker 1: No. I mean, they're going to spend whatever they need.
- 41:20Speaker 4: Are they going to pay the light bill when the
- 41:22Speaker 4: stadium's closed next year?
- 41:26Speaker 1: You know, that's a good question. I don't know who
- 41:28Speaker 1: has to pay that bill. Is it the city or
- 41:30Speaker 1: is it the Rangers?
- 41:32Speaker 4: I bet it's the city.
- 41:33Speaker 1: It's probably the city. We're going to take a break.
- 41:36Speaker 1: We've got the Texans report brought to you by Oscar
- 41:39Speaker 1: & Sons and Citizen State Bank.
- 41:42Speaker 16: Even a so-called minor car wreck can turn your life
- 41:45Speaker 16: upside down, but Oscar & Sons Body Shop has been

- 41:51Speaker 16: of motorists all over the Brazos Valley. Patrick and Tracy

- 42:06Speaker 16: 979-778-6836 or online at austransons.com.
- 42:14Speaker 6: The Texans are looking to build some momentum on their
- 42:16Speaker 6: first win against Tennessee over the weekend. The Titans, however,
- 42:19Speaker 6: might not be the best measuring tool considering their contention
- 42:21Speaker 6: for worst team in the league. Texans general manager Nick
- 42:24Speaker 6: Casario joined Texans radio yesterday to discuss how no matter
- 42:27Speaker 6: the opponent, playing complimentary football was a big step forward.
- 42:31Speaker 4: He overall played pretty good team football.
- 42:32Speaker 14: We talked about going into the week, you know, being
- 42:34Speaker 14: able to kind of finish games, play complimentary football, had
- 42:37Speaker 14: contributions in all three phases. We actually had control of
- 42:40Speaker 14: field position, which is something that really in the first
- 42:42Speaker 14: four games, we really hadn't had control. So did a
- 42:45Speaker 14: good job and played well defensively, took the ball away offensively,
- 42:48Speaker 14: took care of the ball. Still left some points on
- 42:51Speaker 14: the board in a red area, but it's always good
- 42:53Speaker 14: to win on the road.
- 42:54Speaker 6: Casario also spoke on the addition of wide receiver Marvin
- 42:57Speaker 6: Harrison Jr. saying that his expectations won't be unreasonable. as
- 43:00Speaker 6: the young whiteout is hoping to make his debut Sunday
- 43:03Speaker 6: against Jacksonville. Kickoff between the Texans and Jaguars is set
- 43:06Speaker 6: for 8.30 Sunday morning from London with coverage on NFL Network.
- 43:09Speaker 6: With your Houston Texans report, I'm Jett Nelson.

- 45:07Speaker 1: 11 a.m. Churchill and Roosevelt, the Intimate Gathering series at

- 45:44Speaker 17: We're proud to support the Texas A & M Aggies
- 45:45Speaker 17: this season. Citizen State Bank, local people, local decisions, since 1925.
- 45:51Speaker 17: Member FDIC.
- 45:55Speaker 19: Many's the time I've been mistaken Many times confused Yes,
- 46:07Speaker 19: and I've often felt forsaken And certainly misused.
- 46:17Speaker 1: Oh, but I'm all right. I'm all right.
- 46:22Speaker 19: I'm just weary.
- 46:24Speaker 1: To my bones.
- 46:28Speaker 19: Still, you don't expect to be bright and bondy.
- 46:35Speaker 4: So far away.
- 46:38Speaker 1: This is a Paul Simon song. Paul Simon turned 85
- 46:43Speaker 1: years young yesterday and still performing.
- 46:48Speaker 4: So he's still crazy after all these years?
- 46:50Speaker 1: He is still crazy after all these years. And Edie Burkell,
- 46:54Speaker 1: his wife, has a brand new group she's fronting.
- 46:58Speaker 4: I don't like that.
- 47:00Speaker 1: I'm just telling you. It's not New Bohemians anymore.
- 47:03Speaker 4: I saw New Bohemians before Edie Burkell was with them.
- 47:06Speaker 1: The Athletic has ranked... College football's biggest underachievers of all time. Okay?
- 47:17Speaker 4: Okay.
- 47:17Speaker 1: Here are the parameters. You ready? Yes. Two sets of numbers. Finances.
- 47:28Speaker 1: Two decades of athletic revenues reported by the U.S. Department
- 47:32Speaker 1: of Education. Proximity of talent. How many NFL players were
- 47:38Speaker 1: born in this state? Talent acquisition. How many NFL draft
- 47:46Speaker 1: picks a school has produced in the common era? Fan
- 47:51Speaker 1: base size. Stadium capacity. Then they weighed those factors against
- 48:00Speaker 1: the program's success. Winning percentage. conference championships, top 25 finishes
- 48:10Speaker 1: and national titles in the AP press poll era since 1936.
- 48:15Speaker 1: And how many times a program went from top 25
- 48:23Speaker 1: to unranked at the end of the season. Also, This
- 48:29Speaker 1: is important because this ain't rocket science. It's just opinion.
- 48:36Speaker 1: We massage the math using a proprietary blend of vibes
- 48:41Speaker 1: and common sense to account for context and statistical oddities,
- 48:47Speaker 1: like a dearth of conference titles for historical independence. Okay?
- 48:55Speaker 20: Whatever.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Honorable mention. Memphis... among the group of six leaders in
- 49:00Speaker 1: athletic revenue, has produced more NFL picks than Boise State,
- 49:06Speaker 1: but with a 5-10 winning percentage overall. South Florida, the
- 49:11Speaker 1: money and the location, with zero conference championships, but the
- 49:16Speaker 1: Bulls get a pass because they only started playing in 1990.
- 49:20Speaker 1: in 1997. The only program to have more seasons that
- 49:23Speaker 1: started in the top 25 and finished unranked than Michigan
- 49:28Speaker 1: State 20 times was USC. But the Trojans had almost
- 49:35Speaker 1: twice as many preseason ranking appearances. So the Spartans don't
- 49:41Speaker 1: have that excuse. Okay, we ready?
- 49:45Speaker 11: Sure.
- 49:46Speaker 1: Number 10, Rice. The Owls. Wait a minute.
- 49:50Speaker 4: It's a bad list.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Listen to me. It's a bad list. One of the
- 49:54Speaker 1: best recruiting cities in the same athletic revenue tier as
- 49:59Speaker 1: Boise State, Colorado State, and Fresno State. The university has
- 50:04Speaker 1: an $ 8 billion endowment. They haven't appeared in the AP
- 50:08Speaker 1: rankings in more than 60 years. In three decades since
- 50:13Speaker 1: the Southwest Conference split, Rice has won conference title. That's it.
- 50:20Speaker 4: Do they not have the University of Chicago there? Final thought.
- 50:23Speaker 1: They have a final thought. It's unfair to expect Rice
- 50:26Speaker 1: to be like Texas A & M or Houston. It
- 50:29Speaker 1: is fair to expect Rice to be much closer than
- 50:32Speaker 1: a perennial group of six loser.
- 50:36Speaker 4: Not if they don't care about football.
- 50:39Speaker 1: That's not the point.
- 50:41Speaker 4: The proprietary, let me massage this. When they worry more
- 50:46Speaker 4: about yards passing than grade point average, then Rice can
- 50:51Speaker 4: do something in football.
- 50:54Speaker 1: Maybe, but they haven't. That's the point. Number nine.
- 50:57Speaker 4: Because they don't care.
- 50:59Speaker 1: UCLA.
- 50:59Speaker 11: UCLA.
- 51:00Speaker 1: The best recruiting spot in a top-tier recruiting state have
- 51:05Speaker 1: produced almost as many draft picks since 1970 as Texas.
- 51:12Speaker 1: Add in a giant home stadium, and the numbers view
- 51:16Speaker 1: UCLA as a strong underachiever. They're probably a top-25 program historically,
- 51:23Speaker 1: but the Bruins haven't been to a major bowl game
- 51:25Speaker 1: this century. have been too inconsistent since 1989. UCLA has
- 51:31Speaker 1: been ranked in the preseason 14 times, finished unranked 10
- 51:35Speaker 1: of those years. Wisconsin. This isn't about Luke Fickle. All
- 51:41Speaker 1: 12 programs that have reported more athletic revenue than Wisconsin
- 51:46Speaker 1: have won at least two national titles. That's an interesting
- 51:50Speaker 1: stat right there. Most of Wisconsin's Midwest peers, Minnesota, Michigan,
- 51:55Speaker 1: Michigan State, Iowa, have won national championships. Obviously, some of
- 52:00Speaker 1: those have been a long, long time ago, which makes
- 52:03Speaker 1: the Badgers' drought more notable and slots them ahead of UCLA. Virginia,
- 52:09Speaker 1: the Cavaliers have a strong recruiting footprint, rank among the
- 52:13Speaker 1: top 40 in stadium capacity and money, which is hard
- 52:17Speaker 1: to believe. The potential is there for the program to
- 52:20Speaker 1: aim higher than being the top of our previous list
- 52:24Speaker 1: of the nation's most mediocre programs. Virginia consistently ranks near
- 52:29Speaker 1: the top of all sports rankings. National titles in six sports,
- 52:33Speaker 1: including men's basketball and baseball, since 2014. If the Cavaliers
- 52:38Speaker 1: can win at that level in other sports, they should
- 52:41Speaker 1: have more than two conference titles in football over the
- 52:44Speaker 1: last century.
- 52:45Speaker 4: Don't disagree with that one.
- 52:47Speaker 1: Okay.
- 52:48Speaker 4: But I also think they're still behind Virginia Tech in state.
- 52:53Speaker 1: North Carolina. Tar Heels have many of the same advantages
- 52:58Speaker 1: as Virginia, 40 more draft picks, three coaches in the
- 53:02Speaker 1: College Football Hall of Fame. All of them won national
- 53:06Speaker 1: titles after leaving North Carolina. 30 schools have started in
- 53:11Speaker 1: the preseason ranks at least 20 times, according to the
- 53:15Speaker 1: College Poll Archive. The Tar Heels have the highest bus
- 53:18Speaker 1: percentage of them all, going from ranked to unranked 15
- 53:22Speaker 1: out of 20 times, 71%. Illinois, in a state ranked
- 53:29Speaker 1: among top six producing all-time and current NFL players, according
- 53:33Speaker 1: to Pro Football Reference. The Illini haven't done enough to
- 53:38Speaker 1: capitalize on local talent. With all due respect to Red
- 53:42Speaker 1: Grange and their triumphs before the age of color television,
- 53:46Speaker 1: Illinois has underachieved only seven top 25 finishes the last
- 53:51Speaker 1: 50 years, less than Mississippi State. Duke, and Navy.
- 53:57Speaker 17: Wow.
- 53:58Speaker 4: That's low.
- 53:59Speaker 1: That is low.
- 54:00Speaker 11: Florida.
- 54:02Speaker 1: Hear me out.
- 54:03Speaker 16: No.
- 54:03Speaker 1: The only schools in the top 11 in all of
- 54:06Speaker 1: our potential related categories were Florida, Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, Alabama,
- 54:14Speaker 1: and Georgia. The Gators had seven fewer conference titles than
- 54:19Speaker 1: the next lowest, Georgia. ranked last in finishes while losing
- 54:24Speaker 1: 5% more of their games. Florida has top seven potential,
- 54:29Speaker 1: but it's historically produced results outside the top 15. Yes,
- 54:34Speaker 1: they won national titles, three of them, from 96 to 08.
- 54:39Speaker 1: It was the toughest calls because Florida's highs are so high,
- 54:44Speaker 1: but the Gators are the flagship university of the state,
- 54:48Speaker 1: top-tier recruiting, have Clemson-like results, especially when not led by
- 54:54Speaker 1: Spurrier or Urban Meyer. Their spikes have been an exception,
- 54:59Speaker 1: not the rule, for a program that's never made the
- 55:02Speaker 1: CFP and hasn't won an SEC title since 08. Stanford
- 55:09Speaker 1: is number three because of Money, background, the rest of
- 55:14Speaker 1: the sports, gold standard for all-around athletic football is the outlier.
- 55:21Speaker 4: So I have a question for you.
- 55:22Speaker 1: Hold on. I'm against the clock. We'll cut off and
- 55:27Speaker 1: then come back. The Cardinals should not have a worse
- 55:31Speaker 1: winning percentage than Boston College, Troy, or San Diego State.
- 55:37Speaker 1: I do agree with that statement.
- 55:38Speaker 4: Yes, but Stanford cares about football and Rice doesn't.
- 55:42Speaker 1: Fair enough. All right, we need to take a break.
- 55:46Speaker 1: We'll finish the top two and move along. David Gardner's,
- 55:51Speaker 1: by the way, they have a fall ring event. What's today?
- 55:57Speaker 1: What's today? The 14th. It's underway. The fall ring event
- 56:01Speaker 1: at David Gardner's is underway. Purchase a diamond of $ 5, 000
