- 0:00Speaker 1: When it comes to your art and your career as
- 0:02Speaker 1: a makeup artist, Like when did it start for you
- 0:05Speaker 1: this inspiration to go into hair and makeup.
- 0:08Speaker 2: I always loved drawing and art and stuff like that,
- 0:11Speaker 2: and I am also growing up always dress Emily up,
- 0:14Speaker 2: like I'd like to dress her up and.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Like outfits and your sisters.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Younger than me, and I would do her hair and
- 0:20Speaker 2: I would just like pick out her clothes things like that.
- 0:24Speaker 2: And then but one day I was like, I think
- 0:26Speaker 2: that my art skills could transfer into like makeup skills,
- 0:30Speaker 2: and I think I wanted to do like magazine editorial,
- 0:36Speaker 2: like you know, we grew up watching Top Model and
- 0:39Speaker 2: all those things. So I was like, I know, I
- 0:41Speaker 2: know what I'm doing.
- 0:42Speaker 3: I could do that.
- 0:43Speaker 1: J Menwell, I'm j Manwell all the j's, all the
- 0:46Speaker 1: j's combined.
- 0:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 0:48Speaker 3: I took a.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Course at eLAC. It was like a certificated course.
- 0:53Speaker 3: And then that's all I needed.
- 0:54Speaker 2: And then I started like bullying friends and family to
- 0:58Speaker 2: let me do their makeup.
- 1:00Speaker 5: Radiola, I'm the Osa and I'm Ala.
- 1:05Speaker 4: You're listening to Lokata Radio.
- 1:07Speaker 5: A radiophonic novella, which is just an extra way of
- 1:10Speaker 5: saying a podcast, and today we have a third Loka.
- 1:16Speaker 4: We are starting something new.
- 1:18Speaker 5: We are bringing some of our favorite past guests, our friends,
- 1:22Speaker 5: to join us and host an episode of look At Radio.
- 1:26Speaker 4: So today we have.
- 1:27Speaker 5: The illustrious, my longtime friend and our makeup artist, Roberto Rios.
- 1:33Speaker 3: That's me, Hi, Hi, thank you for having.
- 1:36Speaker 5: Me, Thank you for joining. We love your look today,
- 1:40Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 1:41Speaker 1: It has been a long.
- 1:42Speaker 5: Time coming, and it has been We've known each other
- 1:45Speaker 5: practically our whole lives and then you have been doing
- 1:49Speaker 5: our makeup.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Or quite some time since twenty nineteen.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Yeah, sounds very eighteen.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Yeah, some of our most iconic look, some of our
- 2:00Speaker 1: most beautiful days are thanks to Robert.
- 2:03Speaker 3: It's true.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Yeah, we're going to talk about all of it, but
- 2:06Speaker 1: I want to go back to like the fact that
- 2:08Speaker 1: it's a long time coming. When you got the invitation
- 2:12Speaker 1: Robert to come and be our third look at Dora,
- 2:15Speaker 1: what went through your head? Were you like, finally.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Say which time? And I'm just like no, I was
- 2:24Speaker 3: really excited.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Like when you guys ask like would you be interested,
- 2:27Speaker 2: I was like, well, of course I'll be there.
- 2:30Speaker 5: I have to admit I am so scared to tell
- 2:32Speaker 5: our best friend Jackie that I.
- 2:34Speaker 4: Was giving you a guest before she is.
- 2:36Speaker 5: I have not told her, Okay, I will tell her
- 2:38Speaker 5: before it drops. But she has been asking to guest
- 2:43Speaker 5: star on look At for years now, and so she
- 2:48Speaker 5: will get an episode eventually. We actually tried last season
- 2:52Speaker 5: and scheduling didn't work out.
- 2:54Speaker 3: But there you go.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Now they will come. But here you are today, little bit.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Then we're so happy.
- 3:00Speaker 1: He was true. And when we were talking about we
- 3:04Speaker 1: were in our production meeting, who's going to be our
- 3:07Speaker 1: third loc Who's going to be a guest host? Did
- 3:09Speaker 1: I not say Robert?
- 3:10Speaker 4: Immediately?
- 3:10Speaker 1: Immediately? Imiately, I said Robert. Because every time we're in
- 3:14Speaker 1: your chair, every time we sit down with you and
- 3:17Speaker 1: you beat our faces, we have the best conversations.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Good, I'm glad you know what Those times are some
- 3:24Speaker 2: of my favorite times, like ever really And it's so
- 3:29Speaker 2: fun to see like the the behind the scenes or
- 3:32Speaker 2: be a part of it and then see like the
- 3:34Speaker 2: spectacle and show that it is and to know that
- 3:37Speaker 2: like I helped create it, even if it's in just
- 3:40Speaker 2: a small way. You guys give me a lot of
- 3:43Speaker 2: leeway with the looks, Like sometimes I get little to
- 3:47Speaker 2: know direction or instruction, and they're like you sometimes I
- 3:51Speaker 2: don't know what you're wearing till the day of, So
- 3:54Speaker 2: I do plan them out. I do like put them
- 3:56Speaker 2: on myself before I put them on you. Yes, and
- 3:58Speaker 2: then I'm always like, what's look better on them?
- 4:00Speaker 3: What's going to look better on that?
- 4:02Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 4:03Speaker 4: If I remember correctly, You've told me that you do
- 4:05Speaker 4: like one side me.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Oh, I'm lazy because I don't want to do it all. Yeah.
- 4:08Speaker 2: So I feel like this eye is the osa and
- 4:10Speaker 2: this eye is malat and I like think about like
- 4:13Speaker 2: your eye shapes and all that and the colors.
- 4:15Speaker 4: Yeah, and artists, Yeah no.
- 4:17Speaker 1: A true ARTI is a true professional. And I just
- 4:20Speaker 1: have such vivid memories of sitting in your bedroom in
- 4:24Speaker 1: your director's chair, Oh yes, up against the window, the
- 4:27Speaker 1: natural yes, dogs around, oh yes, sleeping, barking, gallivanting, you're
- 4:33Speaker 1: beating our faces, and on your TV. Maybe it's a
- 4:36Speaker 1: Jalo music video, maybe it's Kylie Mino, yeah yeah, but
- 4:39Speaker 1: it's always a fucking vibe.
- 4:40Speaker 3: I love it.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Yes, Okay, I love that you guys like that too,
- 4:43Speaker 2: because I don't know you guys could like put your
- 4:47Speaker 2: own music or do whatever. I just like there to
- 4:49Speaker 2: be something, and then I need something to keep my rhythm,
- 4:53Speaker 2: my timing, and I'll be like, oh, every song is
- 4:55Speaker 2: about three minutes. And then I'll be like, Okay, this
- 4:58Speaker 2: is taken forever or whatever the case is. Yes, And
- 5:01Speaker 2: then hair always takes the longest. It always always does,
- 5:04Speaker 2: no matter what it is, even if it's simple, forever.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Because you have so much hair, so much.
- 5:11Speaker 5: I'm in and I'm like done in life.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Sure, yeah, and it's Robert. Robert does our hair and
- 5:17Speaker 1: our makeup.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Not today, Yeah, no, not today, not today.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I did my hair in my and he looks amazing,
- 5:23Speaker 1: looks fab But for our most like our Spotify campaign,
- 5:27Speaker 1: our Times Square billboard, you know, like the Current show
- 5:30Speaker 1: art for our iHeart show, like Robert did her hair,
- 5:33Speaker 1: Robert did our makeup, and very creative each time with
- 5:37Speaker 1: each look, and like, really, you really took your time
- 5:40Speaker 1: on each of us. And sometimes you're like, okay, give
- 5:43Speaker 1: me a time check because we have so much time.
- 5:45Speaker 3: How much is left? Yeah, And I'm like, well, there's
- 5:47Speaker 3: I haven't put the lashes on yet or whatever. Right.
- 5:50Speaker 3: I think my favorite.
- 5:51Speaker 2: One was the La Times one that's such a good spread,
- 5:56Speaker 2: good photos, the makeup.
- 5:58Speaker 3: I just love it so much.
- 5:59Speaker 5: Yeah, that was you know, pandemic days. It was twenty twenty.
- 6:02Speaker 5: So you did our makeup in the backyard, in my backyard.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Outside it was only US three US three.
- 6:07Speaker 4: You were messed up.
- 6:08Speaker 5: We were messed up until we were getting our faces done. Yeah,
- 6:13Speaker 5: we like were doing. We were doing, taking as much
- 6:15Speaker 5: precautions as we could, like during considering the circumstances, right
- 6:19Speaker 5: and so, and then the shoot was in my backyard.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Fabulous.
- 6:23Speaker 4: Yeah, in the La Times, we've.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Done a couple of fun shoots in your backyard, including
- 6:27Speaker 1: our lemonade stand shoot. What season was it?
- 6:31Speaker 4: That was season six?
- 6:33Speaker 1: Season six, and Robert makes a cameo though.
- 6:36Speaker 5: Yes, you did her hair and makeup, and you also
- 6:38Speaker 5: made a camera and.
- 6:39Speaker 3: I was in the video.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Okay, we had you working like criple oversh. We're like
- 6:43Speaker 1: do our hair, door makeup and star in the video.
- 6:45Speaker 3: I think you guys did tell me in advance I
- 6:47Speaker 3: would be in it.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Yeah we did, we did it.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:51Speaker 4: You were not that bad.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Please no, but you were working hard.
- 6:54Speaker 4: You were working hard.
- 6:55Speaker 1: And I think like one of the comps was like
- 6:58Speaker 1: give us like a Priscilla Pressley.
- 7:00Speaker 2: It's kind of like, okay, like when people ask for
- 7:03Speaker 2: that look, I'm like, this is extra work. It's more work,
- 7:06Speaker 2: like yeah, but it looks good. It speaks for itself.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Look at the photos, look at the hair. It was
- 7:11Speaker 2: very like sleek, sleek sixties, like not as big, not
- 7:16Speaker 2: as like frazzle, but like also very like within your
- 7:20Speaker 2: like pop like colorful.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Yes exactly, no vibe yes.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Yeah, And I love the setup.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Who made that, Red Jessica Redheart Media.
- 7:30Speaker 5: Really she designed the set, she she took photos.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Yeah, it was gorgeous, photo video, audio, lighting, set design,
- 7:38Speaker 1: she did everything, very lean crew. It was really always
- 7:44Speaker 1: it's truly impressive.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:46Speaker 1: The talent, the talent, your talent, it's truly very talented.
- 7:50Speaker 1: And your talent. I'm very curious about your origins when
- 7:55Speaker 1: it comes to your art and your career as a
- 7:57Speaker 1: makeup artist, Like when did it's start for you? This
- 8:01Speaker 1: this this inspiration to go into hair and makeup.
- 8:06Speaker 2: I always loved drawing and art and stuff like that.
- 8:11Speaker 2: And I am also growing up, I would I was
- 8:15Speaker 2: always dress Emily up like I'd like to dress her
- 8:17Speaker 2: up and like outfits. And your sister she's fs younger
- 8:20Speaker 2: than me, and I would do her hair and I
- 8:23Speaker 2: would just like pick out her clothes things like that.
- 8:26Speaker 2: And then one day I don't think I wasn't putting
- 8:29Speaker 2: her a makeup. I not, not for not till like
- 8:31Speaker 2: twenty fourteen or later later. But one day I was like,
- 8:35Speaker 2: I think that my art skills could transfer into like
- 8:38Speaker 2: makeup skills, and I think I wanted to do like
- 8:45Speaker 2: like magazine editorial, like you know, we grew up watching
- 8:49Speaker 2: Top Model, yeah and all those things.
- 8:51Speaker 3: So I was like, I know, I know what I'm doing.
- 8:53Speaker 1: I could do that J Manwell I'm j Manwell all
- 8:57Speaker 1: the j's, all the the j's combined.
- 8:59Speaker 3: Yeah. I took a course at eLAC.
- 9:03Speaker 2: It was like a certificated course, and then that's all
- 9:06Speaker 2: I needed. Like I I think I took like an
- 9:09Speaker 2: entire paycheck, which back then I was a teacher's assistant.
- 9:12Speaker 2: I think it was like five hundred dollars, and I
- 9:14Speaker 2: spent it all at Mac, Like I just I spent
- 9:17Speaker 2: it all at Mac.
- 9:17Speaker 3: And I remember the salesperson was so happy.
- 9:20Speaker 2: And then they gave me like all these extra things
- 9:21Speaker 2: and I was like, well, I did just spend five
- 9:24Speaker 2: hundred dollars.
- 9:25Speaker 3: But I had a list that I had compiled.
- 9:27Speaker 2: From like YouTube videos of like this, they're saying to
- 9:30Speaker 2: buy this, They're saying to buy this. And this was
- 9:32Speaker 2: like the still the olden days. It was like pre
- 9:35Speaker 2: the twenty sixteen makeup, so it wasn't like as out
- 9:40Speaker 2: there yet.
- 9:41Speaker 3: It was still like.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Real people making real tutorials of like this is what
- 9:44Speaker 2: works versus like influencers or whatever. Yeah, and then I
- 9:50Speaker 2: started like bullying friends and family to let me do
- 9:53Speaker 2: their makeup. I think one day I did, I did
- 9:56Speaker 2: yours in your room.
- 9:57Speaker 1: It was that was very early day, very early day.
- 9:59Speaker 2: I tried to do this like Gaga Lott I remember,
- 10:02Speaker 2: I remember it.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Yeah, what was the event.
- 10:05Speaker 5: It was just practicing, Like he just came over to
- 10:08Speaker 5: my house like Friday night.
- 10:10Speaker 3: With all those all.
- 10:11Speaker 4: The mat bags, did my makeup and then spend the night.
- 10:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so yeah, fun.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Yeah, but yeah, it's been like serious, serious, since you
- 10:21Speaker 2: guys asked me to do the film, I think, and.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Since Lookitha's anonymous, Yes we have a short film. Robert
- 10:29Speaker 1: did all of the hair and makeup for the entire.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Also one of my faves.
- 10:32Speaker 5: Yeah, yes, yes, and that one was so fun because
- 10:36Speaker 5: it got to be like funky and like futuristic, you know, it's.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Like built another world.
- 10:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:41Speaker 2: I was like, well, what would these girls, what would
- 10:44Speaker 2: these women look like in this world where they're like
- 10:48Speaker 2: have to be hyper feminine but also like want to
- 10:52Speaker 2: be individuals. And I think that's why it was like
- 10:55Speaker 2: the hyper femme was like blush everywhere, blush everywhere in
- 10:58Speaker 2: the matching lips, and then the individuality was like in
- 11:01Speaker 2: the stones and like different patterns and different stones and
- 11:05Speaker 2: like also the colors that were chosen were like for you, I.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Guess, yeah, absolutely, it was like a drunk blush, yes, yes,
- 11:15Speaker 1: and then you did sort of a because it's a
- 11:19Speaker 1: science fiction movie, and so the face gems like I
- 11:23Speaker 1: remember the us as almost looks like a Wi Fi signal.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Yeah, like a like a star spiral thing out. Yeah,
- 11:30Speaker 2: and I think I did, like everything blown out, like eyeshadow,
- 11:33Speaker 2: just blown out, like you just put it on, you know,
- 11:37Speaker 2: and put on your blush like that.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's on YouTube. You can watch Lokitha's anonymous makeup.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Look at the makeup. That's all Robert and so you
- 11:47Speaker 1: you do have known each other since middle school. Yes, yeah,
- 11:52Speaker 1: take us back.
- 11:53Speaker 5: I don't want to go back, but yes, we have
- 11:56Speaker 5: known each other for that long.
- 11:58Speaker 2: I feel like those times, like what I mostly remember
- 12:00Speaker 2: is like hanging out at your house? Would we me
- 12:03Speaker 2: and Jackie were always at your house, like twenty four
- 12:06Speaker 2: to seven. It feels like like you said, but just
- 12:08Speaker 2: spend the night.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Like I don't even know what we didn't do.
- 12:10Speaker 4: We didn't do anything. It's like you were just hanging out.
- 12:13Speaker 3: You know.
- 12:14Speaker 4: It's pre like everything that.
- 12:16Speaker 5: We have today, right, but it's like, yeah, we were
- 12:18Speaker 5: just talk and laugh and watch things.
- 12:22Speaker 3: A lot of like How to Lose Your Mantendes.
- 12:24Speaker 5: We watched a little queer films. I feel high school.
- 12:27Speaker 5: This is in high school.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Once we got to high school, we started like well
- 12:30Speaker 2: I was, I think you were too, were like looking
- 12:32Speaker 2: up movies and then we would buy that search for them.
- 12:35Speaker 5: And we would find them at like the stores that
- 12:37Speaker 5: used to exist what do they call blogbusters Blockbuster They
- 12:40Speaker 5: would buy them.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Remember when that mall the.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Off brand blockbusters kind of thing where you could rent videos.
- 12:49Speaker 2: I think like it was the end of the videos time,
- 12:53Speaker 2: I think where we did vice and we would buy
- 12:55Speaker 2: them and it was like bad like BC gay movie vs.
- 13:00Speaker 3: That, Like yeah you know that, but.
- 13:03Speaker 5: They were like cannon you know, oh yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 13:06Speaker 5: absolutely yeah. But we met in the sixth grade. We
- 13:09Speaker 5: went to a Catholic school, Catholic middle school, and then
- 13:13Speaker 5: maintained our friendship, like through high school. Robert I was
- 13:18Speaker 5: Robert's prom date.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Yes, I love me and Jackie.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Two girls prom. We had two dates.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Someone texted someone who was that It was to Jackie
- 13:32Speaker 2: that was like you were part of that trio, and
- 13:34Speaker 2: that was like that was.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Us, that was us. We were the trio.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Do you have a prom photo?
- 13:37Speaker 3: Yeah, we do, I'll send it to you.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Yes, and it's you with both of your prom dates.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Yea, yeah.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Photo from the photographer. And then like I have that
- 13:46Speaker 2: one that we framed.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I like that one.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Did this raise eyebrows at the prom?
- 13:52Speaker 3: I think it was stunty on my part? I did?
- 13:56Speaker 3: I had I made prompt core I was top five.
- 13:58Speaker 4: Yes.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Can I ask where did you at high school?
- 14:02Speaker 3: It was called St. Paul High School?
- 14:04Speaker 5: Oh, yes, Catholic high school, co ed high school, one
- 14:06Speaker 5: of the only like coed Catholic were you.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Can I ask were you openly gay in high school.
- 14:12Speaker 6: Towards the end, yes, like I would say maybe like
- 14:15Speaker 6: at prom, yes, yeah, definitely, we're like I think I
- 14:19Speaker 6: got to junior year and there was still people that
- 14:21Speaker 6: would be like like this guy next to me and
- 14:25Speaker 6: I forget which course was like hey, you like guys
- 14:29Speaker 6: and I was like that day, I was like yeah, and.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Then and then he didn't say anything like like that
- 14:35Speaker 2: was the end of it.
- 14:36Speaker 3: So I think from then on I was just like, oh, yeah,
- 14:40Speaker 3: it is what it is.
- 14:42Speaker 2: But I remember us because that was after the tenth grade. Yes, yes,
- 14:47Speaker 2: when we went Okay, that school, that school used to
- 14:50Speaker 2: do something called March for Hunger and it's like a charity.
- 14:53Speaker 5: Was even thinking of that, but okay, I was thinking
- 14:56Speaker 5: about we who pride we went to?
- 14:58Speaker 3: We went to.
- 15:00Speaker 1: The first pride that we went to was together.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Your dad or your mom know, your dad didn't want
- 15:06Speaker 3: us to.
- 15:07Speaker 5: Go or I don't remember that I really there was
- 15:10Speaker 5: my mom dropped us off because.
- 15:12Speaker 3: Your mom was defending us.
- 15:13Speaker 2: She was like, it's a festival, They're just gonna go
- 15:16Speaker 2: and be it's a parade. And she kept telling you
- 15:18Speaker 2: they're going to a parade.
- 15:19Speaker 3: It's a parade.
- 15:22Speaker 2: And then we were like you were like the American
- 15:25Speaker 2: apparel AM yes, tube tube top, it's mostly why with
- 15:31Speaker 2: rainbow stripes.
- 15:32Speaker 3: I don't remember what I was.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 15:33Speaker 5: I was wearing little like tiny shorts and a little
- 15:36Speaker 5: tube top.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Yes, yes, fun, yes, And we went and we were
- 15:39Speaker 2: both like, we're not gay.
- 15:41Speaker 4: No no, no, that's not how I read.
- 15:43Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 15:44Speaker 5: So we went to who Pride. I took my then
- 15:47Speaker 5: like you know, high school girl friends.
- 15:49Speaker 2: That was the drama, really, because didn't you I remember
- 15:54Speaker 2: your dad did was upset, don't go.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Anywhere, locomotive, We'll be right back, because.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Because she was going because they like maybe.
- 16:12Speaker 5: But the reason that I we went to Pride was
- 16:15Speaker 5: because I, you know context sophomore year of high school. Okay,
- 16:20Speaker 5: I don't know what I know now, but I remember thinking, well,
- 16:26Speaker 5: I was out to myself and I had a girlfriend,
- 16:29Speaker 5: and I remember thinking like, I think Robert is also queer.
- 16:34Speaker 4: But Robert hasn't said anything. Yes, and so.
- 16:39Speaker 5: Robert hasn't told me yes, Cla, Robert hasn't told me anything.
- 16:43Speaker 5: I want him to know that, like he can tell
- 16:45Speaker 5: me anything, and that I'm supportive and like it's fine,
- 16:49Speaker 5: you know, And so I like planned a weeho Pride
- 16:52Speaker 5: and my mom dropped us off because again.
- 16:54Speaker 4: We didn't have a license.
- 16:56Speaker 5: Yes, and we're like walking through the little fest and
- 17:01Speaker 5: I remember like holding Roberts hand and saying like you
- 17:05Speaker 5: can tell me, like it's okay. In retrospect, like I
- 17:08Speaker 5: should have just waited for Robert to tell me when
- 17:10Speaker 5: he was ready, right, But at the time that felt
- 17:13Speaker 5: like what a friend should do, Like a friend should
- 17:16Speaker 5: let you know, like it's okay to tell me, you know,
- 17:19Speaker 5: And that was that was.
- 17:20Speaker 3: That very sweet.
- 17:21Speaker 1: It was you like took him to the Macy's Day
- 17:23Speaker 1: Parade of yes queer event.
- 17:25Speaker 3: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yeah.
- 17:27Speaker 1: I love that you went all that. We went big,
- 17:29Speaker 1: We went big.
- 17:30Speaker 3: I remember we did talk about it that date.
- 17:32Speaker 2: I was going to tell the story about March for
- 17:35Speaker 2: Hunger and then you were with We we found each other,
- 17:39Speaker 2: right because we went to different schools, but all these
- 17:42Speaker 2: schools did the march together. It's like this charity thing
- 17:44Speaker 2: where you want twenty six.
- 17:45Speaker 4: Months, you do a marathon, but you're walking.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:48Speaker 5: It starts in East La and ends in Santa.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Yeah okay, and there's like a trail marked and then
- 17:54Speaker 2: they have like volunteers that like can pick you up
- 17:57Speaker 2: and drop you off a little bit further ahead or whatever.
- 18:00Speaker 2: But there was this party where it was just you,
- 18:03Speaker 2: me and your then partner, I think, and I wasn't
- 18:06Speaker 2: with anyone from my school, and we were like under
- 18:08Speaker 2: a freeway overpass and you're like you should scream out
- 18:12Speaker 2: loud that you came out or that you're getting You
- 18:14Speaker 2: told me to say something, and I was like, I'm
- 18:18Speaker 2: not going to do that, and I did it. I
- 18:21Speaker 2: don't remember that that was after I did because Musphroger
- 18:25Speaker 2: is at the end of the whatever, it doesn't matter.
- 18:28Speaker 2: But yeah, I think after we talked that day, it
- 18:30Speaker 2: was just we were new.
- 18:31Speaker 4: We just knew.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Yeah, so it was we ho pride, But there was
- 18:35Speaker 1: not a coming out.
- 18:38Speaker 5: That was like that was like the coming out like
- 18:40Speaker 5: for like him, yeah, like him telling me or affirming.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Like did you did you have like a formal coming
- 18:47Speaker 1: out or was it just.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Like I, like she said, like, it's not like I
- 18:53Speaker 2: could hide it or you know that I wasn't very obvious.
- 18:58Speaker 3: My overplucked eyebrows.
- 19:00Speaker 1: But beautiful eyebrows and.
- 19:01Speaker 3: I perfectly blowed up hair.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Yeah, but I told my parents not till I was
- 19:08Speaker 2: nineteen where I was like, hey, I just want to
- 19:09Speaker 2: make sure you guys like no, like I don't know
- 19:13Speaker 2: if I did have to tell you, but I'm telling
- 19:14Speaker 2: you now, and my mom like cried a little, I think,
- 19:18Speaker 2: and like hugged me, and then my dad was like, yeah,
- 19:22Speaker 2: I knew.
- 19:23Speaker 1: And it was just that because you've always been yourself, yes, yes.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I've tried to be other people, so it didn't
- 19:32Speaker 3: work out.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Like I'm just I can't imagine you like putting on
- 19:38Speaker 1: a facade or trying to be someone you're not.
- 19:41Speaker 2: No, it's always been this, but it would be like
- 19:43Speaker 2: if there would be like, hey, you like boys, right,
- 19:45Speaker 2: and I would be like no. And that was like
- 19:47Speaker 2: literally like I don't know seventh, eighth, and ninth grade.
- 19:50Speaker 2: You know, it's like when my child child. Yeah, but
- 19:54Speaker 2: I was lingering in the underwear aisle looking at the
- 19:59Speaker 2: the pictures.
- 20:00Speaker 1: And then okay, so when was like your first real
- 20:06Speaker 1: like out and about open gay love, I don't know.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Okay, So for a lot of gay people, because like
- 20:17Speaker 2: if you didn't come out early, you're like in high.
- 20:19Speaker 3: School, you don't have like all those like early.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Things, so like kind of when you do start and
- 20:24Speaker 2: then and you're older, you throw yourself into things. I
- 20:29Speaker 2: would say that, like at the beginning, I slept.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Around a lot.
- 20:31Speaker 1: What does dating look like for you? Now?
- 20:34Speaker 3: I'm seeing someone right now. His name is Jared. I
- 20:38Speaker 3: really like him.
- 20:39Speaker 4: We love Jared.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Yeah, he's lovely.
- 20:43Speaker 2: It's been it's been maybe to I don't even know.
- 20:46Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Jared, I don't know.
- 20:47Speaker 3: It's been like two years. It's going really well.
- 20:50Speaker 2: He's met my friends, he's met my family, and it
- 20:54Speaker 2: took me a long time to start seeing someone.
- 20:57Speaker 3: Full disclosure, Jason passed away, so.
- 21:01Speaker 2: After that it was quite a few years until this
- 21:04Speaker 2: is my first relationship after that, and Jared is aware
- 21:07Speaker 2: of that too.
- 21:09Speaker 3: I'm really happy where I am right now and like
- 21:12Speaker 3: what I've found and I want to continue on that path.
- 21:19Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 21:20Speaker 2: I think it's really difficult to date in general, like
- 21:24Speaker 2: for anyone. But I don't know if you guys know
- 21:28Speaker 2: how men are. But it's even worse when there's two
- 21:32Speaker 2: of them in the relationship. So it's like all the
- 21:37Speaker 2: same stuff, but also like you understand it, so it's
- 21:42Speaker 2: really weird.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Where like I.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Don't know, sometimes from your point of view, you might
- 21:46Speaker 2: be like why did you do that? Where I'm like
- 21:47Speaker 2: I think, I think I know why.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Does that almost make it worse? Or like you know
- 21:52Speaker 1: exactly why?
- 21:53Speaker 2: They're also why people like a lot of like gay
- 21:56Speaker 2: relationships are famously like you get together and you're like
- 21:59Speaker 2: moved in in two weeks and then like break up
- 22:01Speaker 2: three months from then or whatever. I think queer people
- 22:06Speaker 2: have like a lot of shorthand, and I think it
- 22:09Speaker 2: is easy to jump steps just because you're like, oh,
- 22:13Speaker 2: you both you want this, you want this, Yes, I
- 22:15Speaker 2: want that too, and it like you just sort of
- 22:17Speaker 2: leap ahead.
- 22:20Speaker 3: I've been trying to not do that.
- 22:22Speaker 5: Sounds really healthy, like you're self aware and like you
- 22:25Speaker 5: you know you want and how you're going to move.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Yes, exactly.
- 22:29Speaker 2: And I'm just sort of treading with caution because I mean,
- 22:34Speaker 2: miscommunications are so easy, like when it's something like as
- 22:39Speaker 2: simple as like what you want to get to eat
- 22:41Speaker 2: or whatever, So why wouldn't it apply to like when
- 22:44Speaker 2: you're talking about relationships stuff or what you want or
- 22:49Speaker 2: or sometimes you don't know what you want.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Yeah, even even the tone that you use to answer
- 22:56Speaker 1: a very simple question, oh yeah, can like yeah change
- 23:02Speaker 1: an entire mood an entire day, an entire evening.
- 23:04Speaker 3: Not what you said, it's how you said it.
- 23:06Speaker 1: It's how you said it.
- 23:07Speaker 4: I'm guilty of that.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Yeah, it's tough. I am too. I think sometimes I'm
- 23:13Speaker 3: very matter of fact. I don't know if you notice,
- 23:16Speaker 3: and it just.
- 23:17Speaker 2: Comes out or comes up monotone and yes, sounds like
- 23:21Speaker 2: I'm being sarcastic or something, but.
- 23:26Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 23:26Speaker 3: I try to present myself as genuine.
- 23:29Speaker 1: I've always found you to be extremely genuine. Like I
- 23:32Speaker 1: know that, like if I'm sitting in your chair, Robert
- 23:35Speaker 1: is either going to say nothing or everything, which I
- 23:39Speaker 1: love and appreciate.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Yes, yes, yes, you know what. That does depend on
- 23:43Speaker 3: my mood.
- 23:43Speaker 2: But I'm like, I don't like when I get in an
- 23:46Speaker 2: uber or something, I don't don't talk to me, like
- 23:48Speaker 2: don't look at me. But also things like when I
- 23:51Speaker 2: get my nose done, please don't talk to me. If
- 23:54Speaker 2: you're cutting my hair, please don't talk. I really love
- 23:56Speaker 2: the guy that cuts my hair.
- 23:57Speaker 3: He doesn't talk to me. It's great.
- 23:59Speaker 1: You do you say this at the onset?
- 24:02Speaker 3: No, okay, I catch the vibe.
- 24:05Speaker 2: We're like, you know, when they try to make small
- 24:07Speaker 2: talk's because some people want to sit in the chair
- 24:09Speaker 2: and like spill their guts or talk about their day,
- 24:11Speaker 2: and and that's like an outlet for them.
- 24:15Speaker 3: That's not the case for me.
- 24:16Speaker 2: Yeah, So I think they realize eventually because it's.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Your, it's it's your, you're in transit, you're doing self care,
- 24:25Speaker 1: you're thinking, you're not socializing. I need to learn how
- 24:29Speaker 1: to present myself this way because every time I get waxed,
- 24:32Speaker 1: it's like where have you been? Where are you going?
- 24:35Speaker 1: What are you doing? That's to distract them, to distract
- 24:40Speaker 1: me and them from all of us from what's going on.
- 24:43Speaker 1: They're like getting butterfly, put your knees, your jass, blah
- 24:46Speaker 1: blah blah. But sometimes I just want the whole thing
- 24:49Speaker 1: to happen in silence. But that might be worse.
- 24:52Speaker 4: It might be maybe it m might be worse.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Yeah if they played like.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Just a little and yeah, which okay brings me too.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Every time we're in your chair, you always not only
- 25:04Speaker 1: have a playlist, but if we're at your house, you
- 25:07Speaker 1: put up music videos on your TV, which I've always
- 25:11Speaker 1: I love that touch. It's a great time.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Do you guys know that that gay people are famous
- 25:14Speaker 3: for this?
- 25:15Speaker 1: Yes, okay, good for music videos.
- 25:17Speaker 2: Like like music video parties, like playing when we just
- 25:19Speaker 2: sit around watching.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Oh sure, yes, because music videos are artistry and incredible
- 25:27Speaker 1: and like I think about you and I think about
- 25:29Speaker 1: slo music videos. I think about Britney again, Kylie.
- 25:34Speaker 3: I mean all the icons.
- 25:35Speaker 1: I think queer people.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Really appreciate the like all the work that went into it,
- 25:39Speaker 2: and also the visual like does provide a lot of.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Like meaning and context.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Sometimes I always think of I always think of the
- 25:48Speaker 2: VM A Beyonce Drunk in Love. She's like she's on
- 25:53Speaker 2: stage like soaking wet, and I'm like, that's what the
- 25:56Speaker 2: song is about, and that's why she like visually had
- 25:58Speaker 2: to present herself as like like her was her hair
- 26:02Speaker 2: was wet, her hair, And I think that another artist
- 26:07Speaker 2: wouldn't have cared about that or not put as much thought.
- 26:11Speaker 2: But it always stuck with me that like to her
- 26:13Speaker 2: that that's what is the song is about, and that's
- 26:16Speaker 2: what the visual is.
- 26:17Speaker 1: I love it. It's a lost to art. The girls
- 26:20Speaker 1: just are not doing music videos like so many other
- 26:23Speaker 1: things that have been lost.
- 26:24Speaker 3: They don't make any money.
- 26:26Speaker 1: No, they don't make money.
- 26:27Speaker 5: Yeah, and like people like I mean it depends on
- 26:30Speaker 5: the genre. But I feel like artists like will release
- 26:33Speaker 5: a single, like the build up of an album is
- 26:36Speaker 5: not the same.
- 26:38Speaker 4: Right before it was like in.
- 26:39Speaker 5: The olden days, it was like you release your single
- 26:41Speaker 5: on the radio and that gets played out and then
- 26:44Speaker 5: it's like album release and then if you're like a
- 26:46Speaker 5: super fan, you're gonna buy the album and you're like
- 26:49Speaker 5: you're gonna learn like the album front to cover, right,
- 26:52Speaker 5: But now it's like a single.
- 26:54Speaker 4: Maybe you get an album.
- 26:55Speaker 5: Hopefully you get an album, but like you don't always
- 26:57Speaker 5: get an album, and so the resource says to make
- 27:00Speaker 5: a music video. I just feel like it's not allocated
- 27:03Speaker 5: in that way. It's not given that it's due. It's
- 27:05Speaker 5: like the artistry for the artistry that it is.
- 27:08Speaker 1: We're not going to get another era of Gaga, Bad
- 27:13Speaker 1: Romance or Judas or Alejandro Oh Good. I mean the
- 27:18Speaker 1: production value, yeah, exactly, the set, the actors, the costumes,
- 27:24Speaker 1: it's just not happening anymore.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Yeah, And like I said, I think it provides context
- 27:29Speaker 2: to like the grandness of those songs. Like each song
- 27:31Speaker 2: you just stated, some people might think, like, oh Gaga,
- 27:34Speaker 2: it's just like pop or.
- 27:36Speaker 3: That doesn't mean anything.
- 27:37Speaker 2: But I think that those are like really big songs
- 27:40Speaker 2: of like a lot of meaning, and I think that
- 27:44Speaker 2: her visual is like just as grand. She's saying, like
- 27:48Speaker 2: this is how big the song is. It's like this world.
- 27:51Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, like the if you maybe aren't catching the
- 27:55Speaker 5: symbolism or the metaphor and the song, you're visually going
- 27:58Speaker 5: to see it on the music video.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Exactly exactly speaking because you brought up j Lo I do.
- 28:04Speaker 2: I play that video a lot the waiting for Tonight one.
- 28:07Speaker 3: Oh yes you do, ye yes. It's so good. It's great.
- 28:09Speaker 3: The makeup is good.
- 28:10Speaker 2: The makeup was by Kevin Nakuan, who is like world famous,
- 28:15Speaker 2: like kind of everything we do nowadays is like from him,
- 28:19Speaker 2: as we like. He made up the like highlighting, contouring
- 28:23Speaker 2: and cut priases like like everything. And then that video
- 28:26Speaker 2: I love the like when she has like all the
- 28:28Speaker 2: glitter on her face and all the rhinestones like each
- 28:31Speaker 2: one was individually placed on. Oh wow, I'm sure some
- 28:35Speaker 2: people have seen the behind the scenes of that.
- 28:37Speaker 3: It's really good.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Oh I love that.
- 28:40Speaker 1: So when you're watching, so we're talking about all these
- 28:43Speaker 1: music videos of course, and like the big picture of
- 28:45Speaker 1: them and the grandness and how it relates to the music,
- 28:49Speaker 1: but you're breaking down, like the makeup, looks, the glan Oh.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Yeah, well I look at everything, and that's like what
- 28:55Speaker 2: I said about queer people appreciating appreciating everything. It's like
- 28:58Speaker 2: the outfit and the hair and the makeup. Like I
- 29:02Speaker 2: always go back to the to Brittany Hit Me Baby
- 29:05Speaker 2: One More time. It's like, yeah, how many looks is
- 29:07Speaker 2: she in in that? Like each cheek is different, and
- 29:09Speaker 2: like the make the makeup is so good. It's like
- 29:12Speaker 2: that frosty pink lip and like just white on her eyelid,
- 29:15Speaker 2: and and that like all her hair is pulled back
- 29:18Speaker 2: and they put that wig just on the back of.
- 29:20Speaker 1: It hem to make to make it look like it's
- 29:23Speaker 1: a bumpet almost. It's not.
- 29:25Speaker 3: It's a wig.
- 29:25Speaker 4: It's not a bumpet. Yeah.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Yeah. And you you might look at that look and
- 29:30Speaker 1: this is I think, what's so beautiful about like putting
- 29:33Speaker 1: together a production like this. You might look at Brittany
- 29:36Speaker 1: Hit Me Baby One More time and think like, oh,
- 29:38Speaker 1: it's so simple.
- 29:40Speaker 3: Yeah, but a simple look.
- 29:41Speaker 1: But it's anything but simple exactly. It's like such high
- 29:45Speaker 1: production value and it's really very high glam. Yeah, but
- 29:49Speaker 1: it's not like, you know, twenty millimeters lashes exactly. It's
- 29:53Speaker 1: it's the one hair piece. It's the straight hair. It's
- 29:58Speaker 1: like you're saying, like the white on.
- 29:59Speaker 3: The Yeah, the like architecture, the design of it.
- 30:03Speaker 1: The design of it, like it takes a lot to
- 30:05Speaker 1: look that sleek and simple.
- 30:08Speaker 3: Yeah, Dolly Parton says, takes a lot of money.
- 30:10Speaker 1: So it's cheap.
- 30:12Speaker 4: Yes, Yes, we just talked about on the last episode.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Yeah, Robert, were you listening, Yes, I love thank you,
- 30:20Speaker 1: thank you listening to our maxing episode. Yes, speaking of
- 30:24Speaker 1: maxing now that you're here, Yes, what's your take on
- 30:27Speaker 1: like the beauty maxing, the style maxing? Like where is
- 30:31Speaker 1: it going? What are we doing with it? Are we
- 30:32Speaker 1: doing it well? Are we doing it wrong? Like how
- 30:35Speaker 1: should we be working this?
- 30:36Speaker 3: Oh?
- 30:37Speaker 2: I think I think you guys touched on that, like
- 30:39Speaker 2: it's a new label. That's like we're like that, but
- 30:44Speaker 2: nothing about it is new. It's like, well, what have
- 30:47Speaker 2: we been doing this whole time? And then also like
- 30:50Speaker 2: I always.
- 30:51Speaker 3: Take it back to like.
- 30:53Speaker 4: Don't go anywhere, lokomotives, We'll be right back, Like, well.
- 30:59Speaker 3: If you get regularly, is that looks maxing? Or like
- 31:03Speaker 3: if you brush your teeth, is that looks max hygiene?
- 31:07Speaker 3: Is it? I don't think so, because.
- 31:10Speaker 1: We might we might maybe underestimate how little people are doing.
- 31:16Speaker 4: Is that what it is?
- 31:17Speaker 1: I think sometimes we underestimate like actually, like we may
- 31:21Speaker 1: be doing our we're maybe doing a lot, and maybe
- 31:25Speaker 1: like most people are not even doing you know what,
- 31:30Speaker 1: that's a fair point.
- 31:31Speaker 3: I think.
- 31:33Speaker 2: You know something you know, like when well and what
- 31:35Speaker 2: I do in work. It's like some people like they're like,
- 31:37Speaker 2: no I don't use sound screen, or no I don't
- 31:39Speaker 2: wear face.
- 31:39Speaker 3: Cream or like that. I'm like, well, then I'm doing
- 31:43Speaker 3: a lot more than you, I guess. But I think
- 31:47Speaker 3: the maxing thing.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Is specifically about trying to attain something you don't have,
- 31:56Speaker 2: versus like taking.
- 31:58Speaker 4: Care of yourself.
- 31:59Speaker 2: Yeah, like to answer my own question earlier, I was
- 32:01Speaker 2: being facetious about brushing your teeth.
- 32:03Speaker 5: But but there are people that don't brush their teeth.
- 32:09Speaker 1: I see, I see it.
- 32:10Speaker 4: I've seen it online.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Like, yeah, I think it's just about marketing, and but
- 32:18Speaker 2: I think maxing is about something you don't have, Like
- 32:21Speaker 2: like those guys wouldn't need to hammer their.
- 32:24Speaker 3: Faces if they had a chisel.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Jael already, like they would just be chiseled, right, So
- 32:28Speaker 2: at the end, it's about maxing is about going to
- 32:31Speaker 2: an extreme to get it versus like getting your haircut.
- 32:35Speaker 3: Again, I was joking.
- 32:36Speaker 1: I remember once we were I don't remember where we
- 32:39Speaker 1: were coming from or where we were going, but we
- 32:41Speaker 1: were in a car with you, Robert, and we were
- 32:43Speaker 1: talking about plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery, and you were like,
- 32:47Speaker 1: plastic surgery is about taking an eight to a tent.
- 32:52Speaker 1: It's not about like taking like a two to a ten.
- 32:54Speaker 1: That's not what it's about exactly.
- 32:56Speaker 2: And that's like a like a terrible way to put it,
- 32:59Speaker 2: like rating people one to ten. But but what I
- 33:02Speaker 2: meant is that, like you can make small changes, like
- 33:06Speaker 2: you can change your hair, and you can I don't
- 33:09Speaker 2: know where high heels are put the for the men
- 33:12Speaker 2: they put the things in the shoe.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Right, yes, yes, an insert whatever.
- 33:15Speaker 3: But will you ever be taller?
- 33:18Speaker 1: No?
- 33:19Speaker 2: And like can you get surgery to do that? I
- 33:21Speaker 2: think there's one that exists, But like why that? To me,
- 33:26Speaker 2: that doesn't make any sense. It's like you're trying to
- 33:29Speaker 2: get from point A to point Z. But like maybe
- 33:33Speaker 2: if you I don't know, we're.
- 33:35Speaker 3: More accepting of yourself. You could get from point A
- 33:37Speaker 3: to point B.
- 33:38Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, So I feel like this to me is
- 33:42Speaker 1: tying into the idea of maxing or like you don't
- 33:45Speaker 1: have it. Maybe you're not going under the knife, but
- 33:48Speaker 1: here's like little ways that you might get closer to
- 33:51Speaker 1: this thing, this ideal, this next level.
- 33:55Speaker 2: I don't like the whole concept of it, because I mean,
- 33:58Speaker 2: it's just like you I think you talked about, like
- 34:00Speaker 2: the capitalism of it all. It's just like something that's
- 34:03Speaker 2: being repackaged. And at the end of the day, like
- 34:06Speaker 2: anything that is a trend or something new, it's like
- 34:10Speaker 2: usually they're trying to sell you something it's and that's
- 34:14Speaker 2: why trends change, Like that's why skinny pants went out
- 34:16Speaker 2: so that they could make you buy baggy ones, and
- 34:19Speaker 2: then baggy ones will go out and they'll make you
- 34:20Speaker 2: buy skinny ones, right.
- 34:22Speaker 3: And so on and so forth.
- 34:24Speaker 2: I always think about I don't know if I have
- 34:28Speaker 2: all the dates right, but I think that I read
- 34:30Speaker 2: in the nineteen twenties they started marketing razors to women
- 34:35Speaker 2: because they weren't selling enough razors because only men used
- 34:38Speaker 2: razors to shave their faces.
- 34:40Speaker 4: Okay, so they.
- 34:40Speaker 2: Started a marketing campaign to tell women that they should
- 34:43Speaker 2: shave their arms and legs and to look whatever, more beautiful,
- 34:47Speaker 2: more youthful, whatever the case was.
- 34:49Speaker 3: And since then that's what we do.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Yes, yes, And so I think the maxing thing is
- 34:58Speaker 2: just to get you to buy more stuff to like,
- 35:00Speaker 2: someone is like, we need to sell more hammers. So
- 35:03Speaker 2: we need to tell guys to go build a house.
- 35:09Speaker 3: Are building?
- 35:11Speaker 4: We're not building houses.
- 35:12Speaker 1: We need another reason for hammers. We need to recreate the.
- 35:15Speaker 3: Ham big hammer. Doing this, it's.
- 35:18Speaker 1: The big hammer industrial complex.
- 35:20Speaker 3: And who doesn't love a big hammer?
- 35:22Speaker 1: Okay, so this this leads me to my next question, Robert,
- 35:27Speaker 1: what are some because you work you work in beauty
- 35:31Speaker 1: not only as a makeup artist, but you also work retail.
- 35:34Speaker 1: So what are some tips from you for the audience
- 35:39Speaker 1: about like what they should not be spending their money
- 35:42Speaker 1: on that is just like being pushed on them visa
- 35:45Speaker 1: v sales and maxing and trends versus. What are some
- 35:50Speaker 1: real sustainable essentials that people should be investing in for beauty.
- 35:55Speaker 2: I think I'll start off by saying that if you're
- 36:00Speaker 2: gonna do nothing at all, you should have a face
- 36:04Speaker 2: wash and you should wear sunscreen, and that's kind of
- 36:07Speaker 2: like all you really need for makeup. It's like so
- 36:12Speaker 2: dependent on each individual person.
- 36:15Speaker 3: I like to tell people that.
- 36:16Speaker 2: They should spend money on what's important to them. So
- 36:21Speaker 2: like someone that like never wears eye shuttle, you shouldn't
- 36:25Speaker 2: be buying expensive eye shuttle or big palettes, like there's no,
- 36:29Speaker 2: you're not gonna use it. Don't do that. But like
- 36:31Speaker 2: if you always wear like a signature red lip, then
- 36:34Speaker 2: that's when I would be like, maybe you should get
- 36:36Speaker 2: the Door nine nine nine most famous red lip or
- 36:40Speaker 2: the mac Ruby wou or you know, like that's where
- 36:44Speaker 2: you should spend your money, and that's where you'll you
- 36:47Speaker 2: won't regret that you spent it and you'll actually use it.
- 36:50Speaker 2: And I think in terms of like the retail space,
- 36:54Speaker 2: and like when you help people.
- 36:57Speaker 3: Just know know.
- 36:59Speaker 2: More about your it's like what do you want to
- 37:02Speaker 2: achieve and what do you feel about it throughout the day.
- 37:06Speaker 2: Like a lot of people don't know if they're oily
- 37:08Speaker 2: or dry or normal, and they.
- 37:10Speaker 3: Don't know what they want to achieve. They just know
- 37:12Speaker 3: they want to look better.
- 37:14Speaker 2: And that really makes it difficult because I'm like, I
- 37:17Speaker 2: there's so many things here, and a lot of them
- 37:20Speaker 2: do work, But I don't know how to direct you
- 37:23Speaker 2: if you don't know like what your desired outcome is.
- 37:28Speaker 3: But yeah, I would say just wear sunscreen and you'll
- 37:31Speaker 3: be fine.
- 37:32Speaker 4: Yes, where sunscreen.
- 37:34Speaker 5: When I have a question about a shade, I like
- 37:38Speaker 5: will text Robert. I'm like, Robert, do I get this
- 37:39Speaker 5: shade or that shade? And Robert will text me back
- 37:42Speaker 5: like this is your shade? Yeah, this is not your shade.
- 37:45Speaker 5: Don't do that one.
- 37:46Speaker 1: How do you determine what your shade is?
- 37:50Speaker 2: They do train us a lot at work, but it's
- 37:54Speaker 2: a lot of it's visual. And then like once you know,
- 37:57Speaker 2: like I've been looking at stuff for a long time,
- 38:00Speaker 2: so like I know where I fall in each range
- 38:03Speaker 2: because like essentially you know, like in shoes where like
- 38:07Speaker 2: you're like I could fit in this size all the
- 38:09Speaker 2: way up to this side. Oh absolutely, and you like
- 38:11Speaker 2: know which brand is which and so on and so forth.
- 38:13Speaker 2: It's kind of like that scale in like foundations where
- 38:17Speaker 2: it's like I know that I'm in like usually the
- 38:19Speaker 2: first four colors, and I know that I'm un neutral,
- 38:23Speaker 2: so I'm usually around three or four neutral or whatever
- 38:26Speaker 2: variation of that sometimes it's a four hundred neutral or
- 38:29Speaker 2: it's a number four neutral or whatever the case is.
- 38:32Speaker 2: And then I know where she falls as after me,
- 38:35Speaker 2: and she's leads neutral but slightly all of and.
- 38:39Speaker 3: Then yeah, I don't know, I just know it.
- 38:42Speaker 4: Yes, it's amazing. It's very helpful.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:45Speaker 3: Yeah. And then sometimes with certain things where it's like, you.
- 38:48Speaker 2: Know, there's like only four colors in the powders and
- 38:50Speaker 2: I'm like, well you're number two. Then like cause you're
- 38:53Speaker 2: not three and you're not one.
- 38:54Speaker 3: So there you go.
- 38:55Speaker 1: If you know a little color theory, Yeah, yeah, you
- 38:58Speaker 1: can apply it here, which comes from.
- 38:59Speaker 2: Like the artistry from the beginning where it was a
- 39:01Speaker 2: lot of like shading highlight in terms of like graphite
- 39:05Speaker 2: on paper.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Like it's from painting and drawing, painting, drawing.
- 39:08Speaker 3: Yeah, just the color wheel and so on.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Apply apply to the skin. So yeah, it really is
- 39:16Speaker 1: has its founding. Makeup has its foundations, and like the
- 39:19Speaker 1: classical visual arts.
- 39:22Speaker 5: Yeah, well people have also been like in their variation,
- 39:25Speaker 5: like painting their faces since the beginning of time.
- 39:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:30Speaker 4: Yeah, the eyeliner, the lip like makeup is also not.
- 39:34Speaker 3: Use they were.
- 39:37Speaker 1: I hate that they were and now and like the
- 39:40Speaker 1: little like stars and like the stickers that the girlies
- 39:44Speaker 1: are putting on their faces, like they were doing that
- 39:46Speaker 1: in like the Victorian era, but to cover up like
- 39:50Speaker 1: small pops.
- 39:51Speaker 3: Absolutely. Yeah.
- 39:52Speaker 1: So like the beauty trend comes from a practical necessity
- 39:57Speaker 1: that's like tied to the historical moment, which I find
- 40:00Speaker 1: very fascinating. And how like what we consider like a
- 40:04Speaker 1: beautiful makeup look today is so different than a beautiful
- 40:08Speaker 1: makeup look at any other time period, or like powdering
- 40:13Speaker 1: their face is white, you know, and then like super
- 40:17Speaker 1: super pigmented blush, yeah exactly, and that's like that.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Was the height of beauty, the standard, Yeah exactly. It
- 40:24Speaker 2: is really interesting, especially because well, like I said about
- 40:29Speaker 2: the pants, where like things go the pendulum swings the
- 40:32Speaker 2: other way because you know, they want you to buy stuff.
- 40:36Speaker 2: But also like our idea and our vision of like
- 40:40Speaker 2: what is beautiful evolves, and I think nowadays I like
- 40:49Speaker 2: where it is. I feel like, like I know a
- 40:51Speaker 2: lot of people are like over the clean girl thing,
- 40:54Speaker 2: but there's something that's so like that I really like
- 40:57Speaker 2: about like, well, I'm wearing a lot less. It's just
- 41:00Speaker 2: it's just what I look like. And maybe maybe that's
- 41:03Speaker 2: why it's boring.
- 41:05Speaker 1: I was going to say it.
- 41:05Speaker 5: I thought you didn't I like the cleaner because it
- 41:08Speaker 5: was boring. You came around to it.
- 41:10Speaker 2: Yeah, But the thing is like everything's all jumbled together,
- 41:14Speaker 2: like you know, like people are still walking around with
- 41:16Speaker 2: like the sixties cut preest'size or like eighties blush everywhere.
- 41:22Speaker 1: I think there's no definable beauty trend at.
- 41:25Speaker 3: This I think it was. For a moment it was
- 41:27Speaker 3: like I don't know if you hear my stomach.
- 41:29Speaker 4: I heard it, but I don't know, can you hear
- 41:31Speaker 4: it listener?
- 41:36Speaker 3: For a while it was like wet skin? Yes, really
- 41:39Speaker 3: are doing? Are you doing?
- 41:41Speaker 2: I read somewhere that like humans like the look of
- 41:44Speaker 2: like that sweaty look, and that's why it's so attractive
- 41:48Speaker 2: to us because.
- 41:48Speaker 1: It's like you're working, you're laboring, you're in labor.
- 41:51Speaker 2: Yeah, they used to say that, like that's what blush was.
- 41:54Speaker 2: It was like the flush of like after you've had sex.
- 41:57Speaker 2: And what why people find it attractive?
- 42:01Speaker 1: The post coitus glow fascinating, isn't it? Yeah? You know
- 42:06Speaker 1: what when it comes to for me, like a minimalist
- 42:09Speaker 1: or like clean girl, look like I in my life
- 42:13Speaker 1: have embraced it because I had this moment where my mom,
- 42:17Speaker 1: she is a teacher at a Catholic school, and so
- 42:20Speaker 1: they take a different photo every year. And she's been
- 42:22Speaker 1: at her Catholic school for like almost twenty years, so
- 42:25Speaker 1: she has twenty years worth of photos, and she like
- 42:29Speaker 1: at one point was like looking at some of them,
- 42:31Speaker 1: not all of them, and she like pointed out to me, like,
- 42:36Speaker 1: look how each year, like my face just changed just
- 42:39Speaker 1: a little bit, just a little bit, just a little bit,
- 42:41Speaker 1: just a little bit, just a little bit. And like
- 42:44Speaker 1: in her own words, right, she's like the skin is
- 42:48Speaker 1: just like slightly less firm, Like the glow is just
- 42:52Speaker 1: slightly different.
- 42:54Speaker 3: You know, that's what she's singh, that's what she's.
- 42:55Speaker 1: Seeing in her own vision of herself documented and she
- 43:00Speaker 1: and because she's a performer and has worn like stage
- 43:03Speaker 1: makeup and false slashes and the hair like to perform
- 43:05Speaker 1: for so many years, she always emphasized to me, like
- 43:09Speaker 1: it's for the performance because what you're performing with will
- 43:13Speaker 1: take away from what you naturally have. So you have
- 43:16Speaker 1: to protect your natural lashes, you have to protect your
- 43:18Speaker 1: natural skin, you have to protect your hair, and like
- 43:21Speaker 1: don't take away from what you naturally have for the performance,
- 43:26Speaker 1: like give it its time, but like let your natural
- 43:29Speaker 1: beauty live because every year it's gonna fade just or
- 43:34Speaker 1: change ever so slightly, like this is her own wisdom,
- 43:38Speaker 1: you know. And so for me, I like took that
- 43:40Speaker 1: and said like, well, yeah, it's and she always was
- 43:44Speaker 1: very very much with me, like don't cover it because
- 43:48Speaker 1: then you're gonna lose it and then you're gonna miss it.
- 43:50Speaker 1: It's gonna go anyways, So like why are you taking
- 43:54Speaker 1: from it actively? Why are you actively covering it in
- 43:56Speaker 1: your everyday life. So when I think of like a
- 43:59Speaker 1: clean girl thing, like I feel like that was her version,
- 44:04Speaker 1: but she never used that term. It was more like
- 44:06Speaker 1: embrace what you have when you have it, because when
- 44:08Speaker 1: it's gone, it's gone.
- 44:09Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I love that.
- 44:12Speaker 2: I think also, like you know, like how in the twenties,
- 44:16Speaker 2: like not everybody was a flapper.
- 44:19Speaker 3: It's like, yeah, it's always been that.
- 44:20Speaker 2: Like there's definitely a large group of people that like
- 44:23Speaker 2: don't subscribe to like weary makeup ever at all, like
- 44:26Speaker 2: throughout time period, right, And I guess the clean girl
- 44:32Speaker 2: thing is like a repackaged makeup thing to get you
- 44:34Speaker 2: to buy stuff.
- 44:35Speaker 1: It's still makes up.
- 44:36Speaker 2: I think that the idea of you, like what you're
- 44:40Speaker 2: saying is like, well, this is just me, and like
- 44:42Speaker 2: I don't have to put a lot on. That's nice
- 44:45Speaker 2: to just like be able to like walk out your
- 44:48Speaker 2: front door and not not care so much about it
- 44:51Speaker 2: because I mean, I don't know who who you're worried about, I.
- 44:54Speaker 1: Guess, but ourselves. We are our greatest enemy.
- 44:59Speaker 4: Is literally well I think too.
- 45:02Speaker 5: There's so many like cultural things at play there, right,
- 45:05Speaker 5: Like my mom grew up in the era where it's
- 45:08Speaker 5: like it doesn't if you went to the grocery store,
- 45:11Speaker 5: it didn't matter if you were going to go buy
- 45:12Speaker 5: one little thing, like you shower at the Brenavas de Machiavas,
- 45:16Speaker 5: you dress nice, and you would be on your way
- 45:19Speaker 5: like none of this like running out in ath leisure
- 45:21Speaker 5: wear and your workout clothes like she's and she still
- 45:24Speaker 5: does it right. And so for my mom there's just
- 45:26Speaker 5: like and I think her era there's so much of
- 45:29Speaker 5: like pride and like how like you can be quote
- 45:33Speaker 5: like presentable or like put yourself together. And my mom
- 45:36Speaker 5: still says this about her own mother, like she will
- 45:39Speaker 5: like in admiration.
- 45:40Speaker 4: Be Like my mom used.
- 45:41Speaker 5: To wear these like beautiful suits and we would walk
- 45:44Speaker 5: down the street and like all the men would just
- 45:45Speaker 5: like turn and look at her, and I just thought
- 45:47Speaker 5: she was so beautiful and like she always had her
- 45:51Speaker 5: hair done.
- 45:52Speaker 4: She was like and so that was her.
- 45:55Speaker 5: I feel like for my beauty lesson, it was like
- 45:59Speaker 5: you have to leave the hose like put right. And
- 46:01Speaker 5: I've like learned to like take what works and leave
- 46:04Speaker 5: what doesn't and like make it my own. But I
- 46:07Speaker 5: think that that's also like another way, like women have
- 46:10Speaker 5: also used like different.
- 46:12Speaker 4: Beauty tools to like feel better.
- 46:16Speaker 3: Power or yes, Like.
- 46:19Speaker 1: Yeah, what's interesting too is now at leisure can be
- 46:22Speaker 1: so high end. You're at leisure. It can cost you
- 46:25Speaker 1: five hundred dollars.
- 46:26Speaker 4: Yeah you're still in sweats, but you're.
- 46:27Speaker 1: Still in sweats. But it's it's it's it's brand name.
- 46:33Speaker 3: I think there's nothing wrong with either path.
- 46:35Speaker 2: I think that like it would just be nice to
- 46:39Speaker 2: like alleviate the expectation of that and being like, I,
- 46:43Speaker 2: you know what I do want to be presentable, Like
- 46:45Speaker 2: when I want to maybe I'll put more effort.
- 46:47Speaker 4: That is what I do.
- 46:47Speaker 5: I'm like, Mom, I'm running to the store and my
- 46:50Speaker 5: workout clothes. It is what it is, you know, And
- 46:52Speaker 5: I'm like, can you hurry up? Like you're going to
- 46:54Speaker 5: go by like chicken, like you know when you're taking
- 46:57Speaker 5: forever because you're getting ready and I respect it.
- 47:00Speaker 1: But I'm like, girl, yeah, because I think also today,
- 47:04Speaker 1: like you just said, Robert, like I work out, like
- 47:06Speaker 1: looking like you work out and like you go to
- 47:08Speaker 1: the gym and shop at Arawan is a status symbol
- 47:12Speaker 1: as it's a way of looking like, look at my calves,
- 47:16Speaker 1: look at my calves and veryle yeah, you know, and
- 47:21Speaker 1: it's it's it's going back to the idea that with
- 47:23Speaker 1: the times, like style and beauty standards change and what's
- 47:27Speaker 1: important to others and to us like evolved.
- 47:31Speaker 4: Absolutely yeah, yeah, oh my, I love that.
- 47:35Speaker 3: I like guys in these Nike socks.
- 47:37Speaker 1: You look so good, Robert, And look at your super
- 47:39Speaker 1: clean sneakers.
- 47:40Speaker 3: Oh my gosh. I've been really into I just bought them.
- 47:43Speaker 2: I've been really into like the men's fashion shows lately,
- 47:46Speaker 2: and like ussle, short shorts are back. Short shorts are in,
- 47:50Speaker 2: thank you, not just the gay people wearing them. You'll
- 47:52Speaker 2: see the ciss gender straight guys wearing short shorts. Yeah, everywhere,
- 47:58Speaker 2: And I ye, butter yellows out, Butter yellows out.
- 48:02Speaker 3: It's gonna be what is tell us? Red purple and
- 48:06Speaker 3: red for fall, like I don't know, like a plum.
- 48:10Speaker 2: I believe like a plum and like a vibrant red.
- 48:14Speaker 2: That's like gonna be the new thing.
- 48:17Speaker 5: Red is always in In our opinion, red is a neutral.
- 48:20Speaker 5: Red is a neutral, as is leopard. I wore this
- 48:23Speaker 5: in your honor is a new Leopard is a neutral.
- 48:25Speaker 3: And denim is a neutral too.
- 48:27Speaker 1: Of course, Well, Robert, this has been so fabulous is that?
- 48:31Speaker 1: It Isn't that? No, I mean, it's this has been lovely.
- 48:38Speaker 1: It's it has been a long time coming. I mean,
- 48:42Speaker 1: if you ever thought we were fabulous and beautiful as Lok,
- 48:46Speaker 1: like in our shoots, in our videos, in our campaigns historically, like,
- 48:51Speaker 1: it's very likely Robert was there putting the looks together,
- 48:55Speaker 1: the hair, the makeup, setting the tone, creating vibes, giving
- 48:59Speaker 1: us confident. And so I'm just like so thrilled that
- 49:04Speaker 1: you were here with us today on Mike.
- 49:05Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I'm so glad. I'm so happy to
- 49:07Speaker 3: be here.
- 49:09Speaker 2: I've been wanting to do this for a well, and
- 49:11Speaker 2: it does feel like we're just talking to each other.
- 49:15Speaker 2: I always say when people, people always say stuff like, oh,
- 49:17Speaker 2: the makeup is so good or the campaign is so good,
- 49:19Speaker 2: and I always say, you guys do make it really easy, like.
- 49:23Speaker 3: Like so beautiful.
- 49:25Speaker 2: It's you know, I know your face is now too,
- 49:27Speaker 2: so that makes it a lot easier.
- 49:29Speaker 3: And yeah, yeah, I'm like, there's a mala. Look, there's
- 49:32Speaker 3: a deal a little.
- 49:32Speaker 4: It's true.
- 49:34Speaker 5: Yeah, I do want to I do want to tell
- 49:36Speaker 5: the story of like the Spotify campaign before we leave.
- 49:38Speaker 1: That was because our Times Square moment.
- 49:41Speaker 5: Our Time Square moment. Robert did our makeup. He did
- 49:43Speaker 5: a beautiful purple cut crease.
- 49:46Speaker 4: On me, and I think it was green on you.
- 49:48Speaker 3: You asked me for big and colorful?
- 49:51Speaker 1: What we asked for big and colorful? I don't remember
- 49:53Speaker 1: what we asked for. They said, come as yourselves. They
- 49:57Speaker 1: come as yourselves.
- 49:58Speaker 3: You know you're jumping.
- 50:00Speaker 4: That's basically the story story wine.
- 50:05Speaker 3: You guys sent me a mood board. Probably you guys
- 50:07Speaker 3: send mood boards.
- 50:08Speaker 2: And I think you guys, I don't remember the words
- 50:11Speaker 2: you used, but you did us for like bright, colorful, big,
- 50:16Speaker 2: makeup like ultra glam.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Yes, you were wearing pinks.
- 50:20Speaker 4: Yes, you're wearing pinks.
- 50:22Speaker 5: So you did like a really beautiful purple no blue.
- 50:26Speaker 4: Oh, you did a blue cut crease on me.
- 50:28Speaker 3: Yes, it was like colorful like blue and purple. And
- 50:33Speaker 3: you had.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Because I was wearing these bright green drops green, so
- 50:39Speaker 1: I was wearing like a pink like a matching sat
- 50:42Speaker 1: and then you gave me a green cut crease put there.
- 50:45Speaker 2: Yes, So I did like a lot of makeup and
- 50:49Speaker 2: we did a cut crease and we did like big everything,
- 50:51Speaker 2: like like full on, like you know the rules of
- 50:55Speaker 2: like you just do eyes and the natural lip, or
- 50:57Speaker 2: you just do bright lip and natural eyes.
- 50:59Speaker 3: No, we did everything.
- 51:01Speaker 2: Yes, And then I just was following the prompt what
- 51:05Speaker 2: you gave me, what the moon board was, and then
- 51:07Speaker 2: I like, I literally finished, you guys are about to leave,
- 51:10Speaker 2: and I was like, I think I asked you guys,
- 51:12Speaker 2: like what did they ask you guys to come as?
- 51:15Speaker 3: Like what did they tell you?
- 51:16Speaker 2: And then that's when you told me that they were like, oh,
- 51:20Speaker 2: they said to come as ourselves And I was like, what.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Was that.
- 51:28Speaker 3: Told me different?
- 51:30Speaker 4: Look, just come as yourself.
- 51:31Speaker 3: That would have been boring.
- 51:33Speaker 1: I'm like, I.
- 51:33Speaker 4: Naturally have a blue cut creeze. What are you talking about?
- 51:36Speaker 3: Yeah? And then to be fair, you guys are really glamorous.
- 51:39Speaker 1: So you yeah, it looked great.
- 51:42Speaker 4: It looked me great.
- 51:42Speaker 1: It photographs so well, it was beautiful on our times
- 51:45Speaker 1: for Billboard. It was huge, it was fabulous.
- 51:49Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a great moment and that was fun.
- 51:52Speaker 3: We got ready at my house.
- 51:54Speaker 5: And your sister went and took photos for us because
- 51:57Speaker 5: we couldn't.
- 51:59Speaker 3: In sure.
- 52:01Speaker 2: And then she went to Times Square and took photos.
- 52:03Speaker 2: And if you ask the New Yorker to go to
- 52:05Speaker 2: Time Square, they will tell you no.
- 52:07Speaker 3: But she went, she went for it.
- 52:09Speaker 4: She bought the photo.
- 52:09Speaker 3: That was a beautiful time.
- 52:11Speaker 1: It's a fabulous time. So, Robert, if you could now
- 52:15Speaker 1: twenty twenty six, if there was a look that you
- 52:18Speaker 1: would love to see us try, what would it be?
- 52:22Speaker 3: Oh?
- 52:22Speaker 2: Girls, there's so many feel like I don't know something
- 52:30Speaker 2: something different. I feel like I have I have some ideas.
- 52:34Speaker 3: I want to give it away.
- 52:36Speaker 1: Give me one, give me one, like just one little one.
- 52:38Speaker 3: What do I mean?
- 52:39Speaker 2: Did like like a bleached brows?
- 52:42Speaker 3: Like to say that no eyebrow?
- 52:46Speaker 1: Yeah, you know I've considered it like a whoopie, like
- 52:49Speaker 1: a whoopy old situation.
- 52:51Speaker 5: When you had your pixie, you sent me photos of
- 52:53Speaker 5: a woman who had a pixie and she had bleached brows,
- 52:55Speaker 5: and you were thinking about it.
- 52:57Speaker 3: Yeah, that trans kind of over, but there's no I
- 53:00Speaker 3: don't care.
- 53:00Speaker 1: There's no trends anymore.
- 53:02Speaker 2: I also I thought about you, remember when I painted
- 53:06Speaker 2: you purple, Like I thought like, if like you were
- 53:10Speaker 2: blue and you were teel or something like like, that
- 53:12Speaker 2: would be fun paintings.
- 53:14Speaker 1: If we do something very high fashion and avant garde.
- 53:17Speaker 2: Like HALLOWEENI yeah, okay, I was not expecting these, but

- 53:34Speaker 1: like a lighter shade I'm dead like I would do
- 53:37Speaker 1: like he.
- 53:39Speaker 4: Doesn't mean really bleach, he means look.
- 53:42Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, yeah.
