Transcript
- 0:00Alexander was invited in to the Creator and overseer of the
- 0:04entire universe. He went within and saw a fire,
- 0:08bright haze and seated on a throne, the God whom he had once
- 0:13seen worshipped by men of Rakotide, the Lord Sorapis.
- 0:18In the Greek version, it was the God Dionysus.
- 0:22Alexander saw his chance to bring up the matter of his
- 0:25longevity. Lord God, he said, How many
- 0:28years shall I live? But there was no answer from the
- 0:32God. Then Sasanchusis sought to
- 0:34console Alexander, for the God's silence spoke for itself.
- 0:38Though I myself have joined the ranks of the gods, Sasanchusis
- 0:42said, I was not as fortunate as you, For although I have
- 0:46conquered the whole world and subjugated so many peoples,
- 0:49nobody remembers my name. But you shall have great renown.
- 0:53You will have an immortal name even after death.
- 0:57In this manner, he consoled Alexander.
- 0:59You shall live upon dying, thus not dying, immortalized by a
- 1:04lasting reputation. Disappointed, Alexander left the
- 1:08caves and continued the journey to be made to seek the advice of
- 1:12other sages to find an escape from immortal's fate, to
- 1:16indulate others who before him did succeed in joining the
- 1:19immortal gods. According to one version, among
- 1:23those whom Alexander searched out and met was Enoch, the
- 1:27biblical patriarch from the days before the deluge, who was the
- 1:31great grandfather of Noah. It was a place of mountains
- 1:36where Paradise, which is the land of the living, is situated,
- 1:39the abode where the Saints dwell.
- 1:42Atop a mountain there was a glittering structure from which
- 1:45there extended skyward a huge stairway made of 2500 golden
- 1:50slabs. In a vast hall or cavern,
- 1:53Alexander saw golden figures, each standing in its niche, a
- 1:58golden altar, and two huge candlesticks measuring some 60
- 2:02feet in height. Upon a couch near by reclined
- 2:06the form of a man who was draped in a coverlet inlaid with gold
- 2:10and precious stones, and above it worked in gold were branches
- 2:15of a vine, having its cluster of grapes formed of jewels.
- 2:19The man suddenly spoke up, identifying himself as Enoch.
- 2:24Do not pry into the mysteries of God, the voice warned Alexander.
- 2:28Heeding the warning, Alexander left to rejoin his troops, but
- 2:32not before receiving, as a parting gift, a bunch of grapes
- 2:36that miraculously were sufficient to feed his whole
- 2:39army. In yet another version,
- 2:41Alexander encountered not one but two men from the past, Enoch
- 2:46and the prophet Elijah, two who, according to biblical
- 2:50traditions, have never died. It happened when Alexander was
- 2:54traversing an uninhabited desert.
- 2:57Suddenly his horse was seized by a spirit which carried horse and
- 3:01rider aloft, bringing Alexander to a glittering Tabernacle.
- 3:05Inside he saw the two men. Their faces were bright, their
- 3:09teeth whiter than milk. Their eyes shone brighter than
- 3:12the morning star. They were lofty of stature, of
- 3:16gracious look. Telling him who they were, they
- 3:19said that God hid them from death.
- 3:21They told him that the place was the city of the storehouse of
- 3:25life, from where the bright waters of life emanated.
- 3:29But before Alexander could find out more or drink of the waters
- 3:33of life, a chariot of fire snatched him away and he found
- 3:37himself back with his troops. According to Muslim tradition,
- 3:42the Prophet Muhammad was also carried heavenward 1000 years
- 3:46later, riding his White Horse. Was the episode of The Cave of
- 3:50the Gods as the other episodes in the histories of Alexander?
- 3:54Pure fiction, mere myth, or perhaps embellished tales based
- 3:59on historical fact? Was there a Queen Candace?
- 4:03A royal city named Shamar? A world conqueror named
- 4:08Cesanchusis? In truth, the names meant little
- 4:11to students of antiquity until relatively recently.
- 4:16If these were names of Egyptian royal personages or of a
- 4:19mystical province of Egypt, they were as obscured by time as the
- 4:24monuments were obscured by the encroaching sands.
- 4:27Rising above the sands, the pyramids and the Sphinx only
- 4:31broadened the enigma. The hieroglyphic picture, words
- 4:35undecipherable, only confirmed that there were secrets not to
- 4:39be unlocked. The tales from antiquity, passed
- 4:42on via the Greeks and Romans, dissolved into legends.
- 4:46Eventually they faded into obscurity.
- 4:49It was only when Napoleon conquered Egypt in 1798 that
- 4:54Europe began to rediscover Egypt.
- 4:56Accompanying Napoleon's troops were groups of serious scholars
- 5:00who began to remove the sands and raise the curtain of
- 5:03forgetfulness. Then, near the village of
- 5:06Rosetta, a stone tablet was found bearing the same
- 5:09inscription in three languages. The key was found to unlock the
- 5:14language and inscriptions of ancient Egypt, its records of
- 5:17pharaonic feats, the glorification of its gods.
- 5:21In the 1820s, European explorers penetrating southward into the
- 5:26Sudan reported the existence of ancient monuments, including
- 5:30sharp angled pyramids at a site on the Nile River called Merawi.
- 5:37A royal Prussian expedition uncovered impressive
- 5:40archaeological remains during excavations in the years 1842 to
- 5:451844. Between 1912 and 1914, others
- 5:50uncovered sacred sites. The hieroglyphic inscriptions
- 5:54indicated one of them was called the Sun Temple, perhaps the very
- 5:58place where the spies of Cambises observed the table of
- 6:02the Sun. Further excavations in this
- 6:05century, the piercing together of archaeological signs, and the
- 6:09continued decipherment of the inscriptions have established
- 6:13that there indeed existed in that land a Nubian Kingdom in
- 6:18the first Millennium BC. It was the biblical land of
- 6:22Cush. There indeed was a Queen
- 6:25Candace. The Hyroblyphic inscriptions
- 6:28revealed that at the very beginning of the Nubian Kingdom,
- 6:31it was ruled by a wise and benevolent queen.
- 6:34Her name was Candace. Therefore, whenever a woman
- 6:38ascended the throne, which was not infrequent, she adopted the
- 6:41name as a symbol of great queen sheep.
- 6:44And farther South of Merrily, Within this kingdom's domain,
- 6:48there was a city named Sinar, possibly the Shamar referred to
- 6:53in the Alexander tale. An image of Candace can be found
- 6:57in the bonus PDF under Figure 5. And what about Cesentiusus?
- 7:03It is told in the Ethiopic version of Pseudocalistenes that
- 7:07journeying to or from Egypt, Alexander and his men passed by
- 7:11a lake swarming with crocodiles. There an earlier ruler had built
- 7:16a way to cross the lake, and behold, there was a building
- 7:20upon the shore of the lake, and above the building was a heathen
- 7:23altar, upon which was written I am Kosh, the king of the world.
- 7:28the Conqueror who crossed this lake.
- 7:31Who was this world conqueror Kosh, namely the king who ruled
- 7:36over Kush or Nubia. In the Greek version of this
- 7:40tale, the Conqueror who had commemorated his crossing of the
- 7:43lake described as part of the waters of the Red Sea was named
- 7:47Cessanchusis. So Cesentiosis and Kosh were one
- 7:51in the same ruler, A pharaoh who had ruled both Egypt and Nubia.
- 7:57Nubian monuments depicted such a ruler as he receives from a
- 8:01shiny God the fruit of life shaped like date palms.
- 8:06A depiction of this exchange can be found in the bonus PDF under
- 8:10Figure 6. Egyptian records do speak of a
- 8:14great pharaoh who, early in the second Millennium BC was indeed
- 8:19a world conqueror. His name was Sanusert, and he
- 8:23too was a devotee of Ammon. Greek historians credited him
- 8:27with the conquest of Libya and Arabia, and significantly also
- 8:31of Ethiopia and all the islands of the Red Sea, of great parts
- 8:36of Asia penetrating the east even farther than the later
- 8:39Persians, and of invading Europe via Asia Minor.
- 8:44Paroditus described the great feats of this pharaoh, whom he
- 8:47names Cesotres, stating that Cesotres erected memorial
- 8:52pillars wherever he went. The pillars which he erected,
- 8:57Herodotus wrote, are still visible.
- 9:00Thus, when Alexander saw the pillar by the lake, it only
- 9:03confirmed what Herodotus had written a century earlier.
- 9:07Cesentiusus did indeed exist. His Egyptian name meant he whose
- 9:12births live, for by virtue of being a pharaoh of Egypt he had
- 9:18every right to join the company of the gods and live forever in
- 9:24the search for the waters of life or of eternal youth.
- 9:27It was important to assert that the search was surely not
- 9:30futile, for others in days past had succeeded in the quest.
- 9:34Moreover, if the waters flow from a Paradise Lost, would not
- 9:38finding those who had been there be a means of learning from them
- 9:41how to get there? It was with that in mind that
- 9:44Alexander sought to reach the immortal ancestors.
- 9:47Whether he indeed encountered them as not too important.
- 9:51The important fact is that in the centuries preceding the
- 9:53Christian era, Alexander or his historians, or both, believed
- 9:58that the immortal ancestors indeed existed, that in days
- 10:02that to them were ancient and olden mortals could become
- 10:06immortal if the gods so wished. The authors who are editors of
- 10:10the Histories of Alexander relate various incidents in
- 10:14which Alexander encountered Sassanchuses, Elijah and Enoch,
- 10:18or just Enoch. The identity of Sassanchuses
- 10:22could only be guessed, and the manner of his translation to
- 10:25immortality is not described. Not so with Elijah, the
- 10:29Companion of Enoch and the Shining Temple.
- 10:31According to one Alexander version, he was the biblical
- 10:36prophet who was active in the Kingdom of Israel in the 9th
- 10:39century BC during the reign of Kings Ahab and Ahaziah.
- 10:45As his adopted name indicated, Eli Yah My God is Yahweh.
- 10:51He was inspired by and stood up for the Hebrew God Yahweh, whose
- 10:56faithful were finding themselves harassed by the followers of the
- 10:59Canaanite God Bal. After a period of seclusion at a
- 11:04secret place near the Jordan River, where he was apparently
- 11:07coached by the Lord, he was given a mantle of hair cloth of
- 11:12magical powers and was able to perform miracles, residing first
- 11:17near the Phoenician town of Sidon.
- 11:19His first reported miracle, as related in First Kings chapter
- 11:2317, was the making of a little cooking oil and a spoonful of
- 11:27flour. Last a widow who gave him
- 11:29shelter the rest of her lifetime.
- 11:32Then he prevailed on the Lord to revive her son after he had died
- 11:36of a violent illness. He could also summon the fire of
- 11:39God from the skies, which came in handily in the ongoing
- 11:43struggle with the kings and priests who succumbed to Pagan
- 11:47temptations of him. The scriptures say that he did
- 11:51not die on earth, for he went up into heaven in a whirlwind.
- 11:55According to Jewish traditions, Elijah is still immortal, and to
- 12:00this very day tradition requires that he be invited to come into
- 12:03Jewish homes on Passover eve. His ascent is described in the
- 12:08Old Testament in great detail, and as reported in Second Kings
- 12:12chapter 2, the event was not a sudden or unexpected occurrence.
- 12:17On the contrary, it was a planned and prearranged
- 12:20operation whose place and time were communicated to Elijah in
- 12:24advance. The designated place was in the
- 12:27Jordan Valley on the eastern side of the river, perhaps in
- 12:31the very area where Elijah was ordained as a man of God as he
- 12:36began his last journey to Gilgal, a place commemorating an
- 12:39earlier miracle. As the Bible tells, he had a
- 12:43tough time shaking off his devoted chief disciple, Elisha.
- 12:48Along the way, the two prophets were repeatedly intercepted by
- 12:51disciples, sons of prophets, who kept asking, Is it true that the
- 12:56Lord will take Elijah heavenward today?
- 12:59Let the biblical narrator tell the story in his own words.
- 13:03And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah into
- 13:07heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went up with Elijah from
- 13:12Gilgal. And Elijah said unto Elijah,
- 13:15Tarry here, I pray thee, for the Lord has sent me to Beth El.
- 13:20And Elijah said unto him, As the Lord liveth, and by thy life I
- 13:25will not leave thee. So they went down to Beth El, as
- 13:29the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel, came forth to
- 13:33Elijah, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will
- 13:37this day take the master from above thee?
- 13:39And he said, yeah, I know it too, but keep silent.
- 13:44Now Elijah admitted to Elijah that his destination was Jericho
- 13:49by the Jordan River, and he asked his colleague to stay
- 13:52behind. But again Elijah refused, and
- 13:55went along with the prophet. And so they came to Jericho.
- 13:59And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho approached
- 14:03Elijah, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will
- 14:06this day take the master from above thee?
- 14:09And he said, Yeah, I know it too, but keep silent.
- 14:13Foiled thus far in his attempt to proceed alone, Elijah then
- 14:17asked Elijah to stay behind in Jericho and to let him proceed
- 14:21to the river's bank unaccompanied, but Elijah
- 14:24refused and would not part. From Elijah encouraged, 50 men
- 14:29of the sons of the prophets went along, but they stopped and
- 14:32stood apart as the two Elijah and Elijah reached the Jordan.
- 14:38And Elijah took his mantle and rolled it together, and struck
- 14:42the waters, And the waters parted, hit her and thither, and
- 14:47the two of them crossed over on dry ground.
- 14:50Once they were across, Elijah asked that Elijah imbue him with
- 14:55the divine Spirit. But before he could get an
- 14:58answer, as they continued to walk on and to talk, there
- 15:01appeared a chariot of fire and horses of fire, and the two were
- 15:06separated. And Elijah went up into heaven
- 15:09in a whirlwind. And Elijah saw, and he cried
- 15:12out, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its
- 15:16horsemen. And he saw it no more.
- 15:20Distraught, Elijah sat stunned for a while.
- 15:23Then he saw that the mantle of Elijah was left behind.
- 15:28Was it by accident or on purpose?
- 15:31Determined to find out, Elijah took the mantle and returned to
- 15:34the banks of the Jordan, and called the name of Yahweh and
- 15:38struck the waters. And lo and behold, the waters
- 15:41parted. Hit her and thither, and Elijah
- 15:43crossed. And the sons of the prophets,
- 15:47the disciples who stood back on the western side of the river in
- 15:50the plain of Jericho, saw this. And they said, The inspiration
- 15:53of Elijah doth rest upon Elijah. And they came toward him and
- 15:58prostrated themselves before him.
- 16:01Incredulous of what they had seen with their own eyes, the 50
- 16:05disciples wondered whether Elijah was indeed taken
- 16:09heavenward for good. Perchance the Lord's wind had
- 16:12blown him only some distance, and he was thrown upon a
- 16:15mountain or into some ravine. They asked.
- 16:18Over the objections of Elijah, they searched for three days,
- 16:22and when they returned from the futile search, Elijah said, Did
- 16:26I not say unto you, Go not? For he well knew the truth that
- 16:30the Lord of Israel had taken Elijah up in a chariot of fire.
- 16:36The encounter with Enoch which the histories of Alexander
- 16:39claimed for him, introduced into the search for immortality an
- 16:44immortal ancestor specifically mentioned in the Old and New
- 16:48Testaments alike, the legends of whose ascent to the heavens
- 16:52predated the Bible and were recorded in their own right.
- 16:56According to the Bible, Enoch was the 7th prediluvian
- 17:01patriarch in the line of Adam through Seth, as distinct from
- 17:05the accursed line of Adam through Cain.
- 17:08He was the great grandfather of Noah, the hero of the Deluge.
- 17:13The 5th chapter of the book of Genesis lists the genealogies of
- 17:18these patriarchs, the ages at which their rightful heirs were
- 17:21born, and the ages at which they died.
- 17:25But Enoch was an exception. No mention at all is made of his
- 17:29death explaining that he had walked with the Lord.
- 17:33The book of Genesis states that at the actual or symbolic age of
- 17:37365, the number of days in a solar year, Enoch was gone from
- 17:43earth, for the Lord had taken him.
- 17:46Enlarging on the cryptic biblical statement, Jewish
- 17:49commentators often quoted older sources which seemed to describe
- 17:54an actual ascent by Enoch to the heavens, where he was by some
- 17:58versions translated into Metatron, the Lord's Prince of
- 18:03the Countenance, who was stationed right behind the
- 18:07Lord's throne. According to these legends, as
- 18:10brought together by IB Lavner in his Coal agedoth Israel, all the
- 18:15legends of Israel, when Enoch was summoned to the Lord's
- 18:18abode, A fiery horse was sent for him from the heavens.
- 18:22Enoch was at the time preaching righteousness to the people.
- 18:26When the people saw the fiery horse descending from the skies,
- 18:30they asked Enoch for an explanation, and he told them,
- 18:34Know ye that the time has come to leave ye and ascend to
- 18:37heaven. But as he mounted the horse, the
- 18:40people refused to let him leave, and followed him about for a
- 18:44whole week. And it was on the 7th day that a
- 18:48fiery chariot, drawn by fiery horses and angels, came down and
- 18:53raised Enoch skyward. While he was soaring up, the
- 18:57angels of heaven objected to the Lord.
- 18:59How comes a man born of a woman to ascend unto the heavens?
- 19:04But the Lord pointed out the piety and devotion of Enoch, and
- 19:08opened to him the gates of life and of wisdom, and arrayed him
- 19:13in a magnificent garment and a luminous crown.
- 19:16As in other instances, cryptic references in the Scriptures
- 19:20often suggest that the ancient editor assumed that his reader
- 19:24was familiar with some other more detailed writings on the
- 19:27subject at hand. There are even specific mentions
- 19:31of such writings, the Book of Righteousness or the Book of the
- 19:34Wars of Yahweh, which must have existed, but were entirely lost.
- 19:39In the case of Enoch, the New Testament augments a cryptic
- 19:43statement that Enoch was translated by the Lord that he
- 19:47should not see death, with a mention of a testimony of Enoch
- 19:51written or dictated by him before his translation to
- 19:55immortality. Hebrews Chapter 11, verse 5,
- 19:59Jude 14 referring to the prophecies of Enoch is also
- 20:04taken as referring to some actual writings by this
- 20:07patriarch. Various Christian writings
- 20:10throughout the centuries also contained similar hints or
- 20:14references, and as it turned out, there have in fact
- 20:17circulated since the 2nd century BC several versions of a Book of
- 20:22Enoch. When the manuscripts were
- 20:24studied in the 19th century, scholars concluded that there
- 20:27were basically two sources. The first, identified as One
- 20:32Enoch and called the Ethiopic Book of Enoch, is an Ethiopic
- 20:37translation of a previous Greek translation of an original work
- 20:41in Hebrew or Aramaic. The other identified, AS2 Enoch,
- 20:46is a Slavonic translation from an original written in Greek,
- 20:51whose full title was the Book of the Secrets of Enoch.
- 20:56Scholars who have studied these versions do not rule out the
- 20:59possibility that both one Enoch and two Enoch stem from a much
- 21:04earlier original work and that there indeed could have existed
- 21:08in antiquity a Book of Enoch. The Apocrypha and Pseudopigrapha
- 21:13of the Old Testament, which RH Charles began to publish in
- 21:171913, is still the major English translation of the Books of
- 21:23Enoch and the other early writings which were excluded
- 21:26from the canonized Old and New Testaments.
- 21:29Written in the first person, the Book of the Secrets of Enoch
- 21:32starts with an exact place and time.
- 21:36On the first day of the first month of the 365th year, I was
- 21:40alone in my house, and I rested on my bed and slept.
- 21:44And there appeared to meet two men very tall, such as I have
- 21:48never seen on earth, and their faces shone like the sun, and
- 21:52their eyes were like burning lamps, and fire came forth from
- 21:56their lips. Their dress had the appearance
- 21:58of feathers. Their feet were purple, their
- 22:01wings were brighter than gold, their hands whiter than snow.
- 22:05They stood at the head of my bed and called me by my name because
- 22:10he was asleep when these strangers arrived.
- 22:12Enoch adds for the record that by then he was no longer
- 22:15sleeping. I saw clearly these men standing
- 22:18in front of me, he states. He made obeisance to them and
- 22:23was overtaken by fear, but the two reassured him.
- 22:26Be of good cheer, Enoch, be not afraid.
- 22:29The everlasting God hath sent us to thee, and lo, today thou
- 22:33shalt ascend with us into heaven.
- 22:36They then told Enoch to wake up his family and servants and
- 22:39order them not to seek him till the Lord bring thee back to
- 22:42them. This Enoch did, using the
- 22:45opportunity to instruct his sons in the ways of righteousness.
- 22:49Then the time came to depart. It came to pass, when I had
- 22:53spoken to my sons, these men summoned me and took me on their
- 22:57wings and placed me on the clouds.
- 22:59And lo, the clouds moved. Going higher I saw the air, and
- 23:03going still higher I saw the ether.
- 23:06And they placed me in the 1st heaven.
- 23:09And they showed me a very great sea, greater than the earthly
- 23:13sea. Ascending thus unto the heavens
- 23:16upon clouds that move, Enoch was transported from the 1st heaven,
- 23:20where 200 angels ruled the stars, to the second gloomy
- 23:24heaven, then to the 3rd heaven. There he was shown a garden with
- 23:28a goodliness in its appearance, beautiful and fragrant trees and
- 23:32fruits in the midst therein. There is a tree of life in that
- 23:36place on which the God rests when he comes into paradise.
- 23:41Stunned by the tree's magnificence, Enoch manages to
- 23:44describe the tree of life in the following words.
- 23:47It is beautiful more than any created thing on all sides and
- 23:52appearance. It is like gold and Crimson,
- 23:54transparent as fire. From its root go 4 streams which
- 23:59pour honey, milk, oil and wine, and they go down from this
- 24:03heavenly paradise to the paradise of Eden, making a
- 24:07revolution around earth. This 3rd heaven and its tree of
- 24:11life are guarded by 300 very glorious angels.
- 24:15It is in this 3rd heaven that the place of the righteous and
- 24:19the terrible place where the wicked are tortured are
- 24:22situated. Going further up to the 4th
- 24:24heaven, Enoch could see the luminaries and various wondrous
- 24:28creatures and the host of the Lord in the 5th heaven.
- 24:32He saw many hosts in the 6th bands of angels who study the
- 24:36revolutions of the stars. Then he reached the 7th heaven,
- 24:41where the greatest angels hurried about, and where he saw
- 24:44the Lord from afar sitting on his throne.
- 24:48The two wind men and their moving cloud placed Enoch at the
- 24:52limits of the 7th heaven and left, whereupon the Lord sent
- 24:56the Archangel Gabriel to fetch Enoch into his presence.
- 25:00For 33 days Enoch was instructed in all the wisdoms and all the
- 25:04events of the past and the future.
- 25:07Then he was returned to earth by an awful Angel who LED a very
- 25:11cold appearance. In total he was absent from
- 25:14earth 60 days. But his return to earth was only
- 25:17so that he might instruct his sons in the laws and
- 25:20commandments. And 30 days later he was taken
- 25:24up again unto the heavens, this time for good.
- 25:28Written both as a personal testament and as a historic
- 25:32review, the Ethiopic Book of Enoch, whose earliest title was
- 25:36probably The Words of Enoch, describes his journeys to heaven
- 25:39as well as to the four corners of earth.
- 25:42As he travelled N toward the north ends of earth, he saw
- 25:45there a great and glorious device, the nature of which is
- 25:48not described. And he saw there as well as at
- 25:52the western ends of earth. 3 Portals of heaven open in the
- 25:56heaven in each place, through which hail and snow, cold and
- 26:01frost blew in. And thence I went to the South
- 26:05to the ends of the earth, and through the portals of heaven
- 26:08there blow in the dew and rain. And thence he went to see the
- 26:12eastern portals, through which the stars of heaven pass and run
- 26:16their course. But the principal mysteries and
- 26:20secrets of the past and the future was shown to Enoch as he
- 26:23went to the middle of the earth and to the east and to the West
- 26:27thereof. The middle of the earth was the
- 26:30site of the future Holy Temple in Jerusalem.
- 26:33On his journey E Enoch reached the Tree of Knowledge, and going
- 26:37West he was shown the Tree of Life.
- 26:40On his eastward journey Enoch passed mountains and deserts,
- 26:44saw water courses flowing from mountain peaks covered by clouds
- 26:48and snow and ice, water which flows not, and trees of diverse
- 26:53fragrances and balsams going farther and farther E he found
- 26:57himself back over mountains bordering the erythrean Sea, the
- 27:01Sea of Arabia, and the Red Sea. Continuing, he passed by Zotiel,
- 27:06the Angel guarding the entrance to Paradise, and he came unto
- 27:10the Garden of Righteousness. There he saw among many
- 27:14wonderful trees the Tree of Knowledge.
- 27:17It was as high as a fir, its leaves were as that of the
- 27:21carob, and its fruit like the clusters of a vine.
- 27:25And the Angel who was with him confirmed that indeed it was the
- 27:29very tree whose fruit Adam and Eve had eaten before they were
- 27:32driven out of the Garden of Eden.
- 27:35On his journey, W Enoch arrived at a mountain range of fire
- 27:38which burnt day and night beyond it.
- 27:41He reached a place and circled by 6 mountains separated by deep
- 27:45rough ravines. A 7th mountain rose in their
- 27:49midst, resembling the seat of a throne, and fragrant trees
- 27:53encircled the throne, and amongst them was a tree such as
- 27:57I had never smelt, and its fruit resembles the dates of a palm.
- 28:02The Angel who accompanied him explained that the middle
- 28:05mountain was the throne on which the Holy Great One, the Lord of
- 28:10Glory, the Eternal King, will sit when he shall come to visit
- 28:14earth. And as to the tree whose fruits
- 28:17were as the date palms, he said, As for this fragrant tree, no
- 28:22mortal is permitted to touch it till the Great Judgement.
- 28:25Its fruit shall be for food for the elect, its fragrance shall
- 28:29be in their bones, and they shall live a long life on earth.
- 28:34It was during these journeys that Enoch saw in those days how
- 28:38long cords were given to those angels, and they took to
- 28:42themselves wings, and they went towards the north.
- 28:46And when Enoch asked what this was all about, the Angel who
- 28:50guided him said They have gone off to measure.
- 28:53They shall bring the measures of the righteous to the righteous,
- 28:56and the ropes of the righteous to the righteous.
- 28:59All these measures shall reveal the secrets of the earth.
- 29:03Having visited all the secret places on earth, Enoch's time
- 29:07had come to take the journey to heaven.
- 29:09And like others after him, he was taken to a mountain whose
- 29:13summit reached to heaven and to a land of darkness.
- 29:17And they, the angels, took me to a place in which those who were
- 29:21there were like flaming fire, and when they wished, they
- 29:24appeared as men. And they brought me to a place
- 29:27of darkness and to a mountain the point of whose summit
- 29:30reached to heaven. And I saw the chambers of the
- 29:34luminaries, and the treasuries of the stars and of the Thunder,
- 29:38and the great depths, where were a fiery bow and arrows and their
- 29:42quiver, and a fiery sword, and all the lightnings.
- 29:46Whereas at such a crucial stage immortality slipped out of
- 29:50Alexander's hands because he had searched for it.
- 29:52Contrary to his proclaimed destiny, Enoch, as the Pharaohs
- 29:57after him, was proceeding with divine blessing.
- 30:00Thus at this crucial moment he was deemed worthy of proceeding.
- 30:04So they, the angels, took me to the waters of life.
- 30:08Continuing, he arrived at the House of fire, and I went in
- 30:13till I drew nigh to a wall which is built of crystals and
- 30:16surrounded by tongues of fire, and it began to affright me.
- 30:21And I went into the tongues of fire, and drew nigh to a large
- 30:25house which was built of crystals.
- 30:28And the walls of the house were like a tessellated floor of
- 30:31crystals, and its groundwork was of crystal.
- 30:35Its ceiling was like the path of the stars and the lightnings,
- 30:39and between them were fiery cherubim, and their heaven was
- 30:44as water. A flaming fire surrounded the
- 30:47walls, and its portals blazed with fire.
- 30:51And I entered into that house, and it was hot as a fire and
- 30:54cold as ice, and I beheld a vision.
- 30:58Behold, there was a second house greater than the former, and the
- 31:02entire portal stood open before me.
- 31:05Then it was built of flames of fire, and I looked therein and
- 31:09saw a lofty throne. Its appearance was as crystal,
- 31:13and the wheels thereof as the shining sun.
- 31:16And there was the appearance of cherubim, and from underneath
- 31:21the throne came streams of flaming fire, so that I could
- 31:24not look thereon. Arriving at the river of fire,
- 31:28Enoch was taken aloft. He could see the whole of earth,
- 31:32the mouths of all the rivers of earth, and the cornerstones of
- 31:36earth, and the winds on earth carrying the clouds rising
- 31:40higher. He was where the winds stretch
- 31:43the vaults of heaven and have their station between heaven and
- 31:46earth. I saw the winds of heaven which
- 31:49turn and bring the circumference of the sun, and all the stars
- 31:53following the paths of the angels.
- 31:56He reached a point in the firmament of heaven above, from
- 31:59which he could see the end of earth.
- 32:01From there he could view the expanse of the heavens, and he
- 32:05could see seven stars, like great shining mountains, 7
- 32:09mountains of magnificent stones. From wherever he was viewing
- 32:14these celestial bodies, three were toward the east, where
- 32:18there was the region of heavenly fire.
- 32:20There Enoch saw rising and falling columns of fire,
- 32:25eruptions of fire which were beyond measure, alike toward the
- 32:29width and toward the depth. On the other side, 3 celestial
- 32:33bodies were toward the South. There Enoch saw an abyss, a
- 32:37place which had no firmament of the heaven above and no firmly
- 32:41founded earth below. It was a void and awesome place.
- 32:46When he asked the Angel who was carrying him aloft for an
- 32:49explanation, he replied. There the heavens were
- 32:53completed. It is the end of heaven and
- 32:55earth. It is a prison for the stars and
- 32:58a host of heaven. The middle star reached to
- 33:01heaven like the throne of God, having the appearance of
- 33:04alabaster and the summit of the throne as of sapphire.
- 33:08The star was like a flaming fire journeying on in the heavens.
- 33:13Enoch said. I proceeded to where things were
- 33:15chaotic, and I saw there something horrible.
- 33:19What he saw was stars of the heaven bound together, and the
- 33:24Angel explained to him, These are of the number of stars of
- 33:28heaven which have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and
- 33:31are bound here till 10,000 years are consummated.
- 33:35Concluding his report of the first journey to heaven, Enoch
- 33:39said, And I Enoch alone saw the vision, the ends of all things,
- 33:45and no man shall see as I have seen.
- 33:49After being taught at the heavenly abode all manner of
- 33:52wisdom, he was returned to earth to impart teachings to other
- 33:57men. For an unspecified length of
- 33:59time Enoch was hidden, and no one of the children of men knew
- 34:03where he was hidden and where he abode and what had become of
- 34:08him. But when the deluge neared, he
- 34:11wrote down his teachings and advised his great grandson Noah
- 34:15to be righteous and worthy of salvation.
- 34:18After that, Enoch was once again raised aloft from among those
- 34:23who dwell on earth. He was raised aloft on the
- 34:26chariot of the spirits, and his name vanished among them.
- 34:33The adventures of Alexander and his search for the immortal
- 34:36ancestors clearly comprised elements which simulated their
- 34:41experiences caverns, angels, subterranean fires, fiery horses
- 34:47and Chariots of fire. But it is equally clear that in
- 34:51the centuries preceding the Christian era it was believed by
- 34:56Alexander, or by his historians, or by both, that if one wished
- 35:00to attain immortality, one had to emulate the Egyptian
- 35:04Pharaohs. Accordingly, Alexander's claim
- 35:07to semi divine ancestry was evolved from a complicated
- 35:11affair by an Egyptian deity rather than by simply claiming
- 35:15affinity to a local Greek God. It is an historical fact, not
- 35:21mere legend, that Alexander found it necessary as soon as he
- 35:24broke through the Persian lines in Asia Minor, not to pursue the
- 35:28Persian enemy, but to go to Egypt, there to seek the answer
- 35:32to his purported divine roots, and from there to begin the
- 35:36search for the waters of life. Whereas the Hebrews, the Greeks,
- 35:41and other peoples in antiquity recounted tales of a unique few
- 35:45who were able to escape a mortal's fate by divine
- 35:48invitation, the ancient Egyptians developed the
- 35:51privilege into a right. Not a universal right, nor a
- 35:55right reserved to the singularly righteous, but a right attendant
- 36:00on the Egyptian king, the Pharaoh, by sole virtue of
- 36:04having sat on the throne of Egypt.
- 36:07The reason for this, according to the traditions of ancient
- 36:09Egypt, was that the first rulers of Egypt were not men but gods.
- 36:15Egyptian traditions held that in times immemorial, gods of heaven
- 36:20came to earth from the celestial disk.
- 36:23When Egypt was inundated by waters, a very great God who
- 36:27came forth to earth in the earliest times arrived in Egypt
- 36:32and literally raised it from under the waters in mud by
- 36:35damming the waters of the Nile and undertaking extensive diking
- 36:39and land reclamation works. It was therefore that Egypt was
- 36:43nicknamed the Raised Land. This olden God was named Puttah,
- 36:49the developer. He was considered to have been a
- 36:51great scientist, a master engineer and architect, the
- 36:55chief Craftsman of the gods, who even had a hand in creating and
- 36:59shaping man. His staff was frequently
- 37:01depicted as a graduated stick, very much like the graduated rod
- 37:05which surveyors employ for field measure in nowadays.
- 37:09Images of the gods of Egypt can be found in the bonus PDF under
- 37:14Figure 7. The Egyptians believed that Ptah
- 37:17eventually retired South, where he could continue to control the
- 37:21waters of the Nile with sluices he had installed in a secret
- 37:25cavern located at the first cataract of the Nile, the site
- 37:29of today's Aswan Dan. But before leaving Egypt, he
- 37:34built its first hallowed city and named it On in honour of the
- 37:39God of the heavens, the Biblical, on whom the Greeks
- 37:42called Heliopolis. There he installed as Egypt's
- 37:47first divine ruler his own son RA, so named in honour of the
- 37:52celestial globe. RA, a great God of heaven and
- 37:56earth, caused a special shrine to be built at On.
- 38:00It housed the Benben, a secret object in which RA had
- 38:04purportedly come down to earth from the heavens.
- 38:07In time, RA divided the Kingdom between the gods of Cyrus and
- 38:11Seth, but the Sharon of the Kingdom between the two divine
- 38:15brothers did not work. Seth kept seeking the overthrow
- 38:19and death of his brother Osiris. It took some doing, but finally
- 38:23Seth succeeded in tricking Osiris into entering A coffin,
- 38:27which Seth promptly set to seal and drown.
- 38:31Isis, the sister and wife of Osiris, managed to find the
- 38:36coffin which had floated ashore in what is nowadays Lebanon.
- 38:40She hid Osiris as she went to summon the help of other gods
- 38:44who could help bring Osiris back to life.
- 38:47But Seth discovered the body and cut it to pieces, dispersing
- 38:51them all over the land. Helped by her sister Neftis,
- 38:55Isis managed to retrieve the pieces, all except for the
- 38:59phallus, and to put together the mutilated body of Osiris,
- 39:03thereby resurrecting him. Thereafter, Osiris lived on,
- 39:07resurrected in the other world. Among the other celestial gods
- 39:11of him, the sacred writings said he entered the secret Gates, the
- 39:15glory of the Lords of Eternity, in step with him who shines in
- 39:19the horizon on the path of RA. The place of Osiris on the
- 39:24throne of Egypt was taken over by his son Horace.
- 39:28When he was born, his mother Isis hid him in the reeds of the
- 39:32river Nile, just as the mother of Moses did, according to the
- 39:35Bible, to keep him out of the reach of Seth.
- 39:39But the boy was stung by a scorpion and died quickly.
- 39:42The goddess, his mother, appealed to Thoth, a God of
- 39:45magical powers, for help. Thoth, who was in the heavens,
- 39:50immediately came down to earth in Roz's barge of astronomical
- 39:53years and helped restore Horus to life.
- 39:57Growing up, Horace challenged Seth for the throne.
- 40:01The struggle ranged far and wide, the gods pursuing each
- 40:04other in the skies. Horace attacked Seth from a
- 40:07gnar, a term which in the ancient Near East meant fiery
- 40:12pillar. Depictions from predynistic
- 40:15times showed this celestial chariot as a long cylindrical
- 40:19object with a funnel like tail and a bulkhead from which rays
- 40:24are spewed out. A kind of a celestial submarine.
- 40:28In front the gnar had two headlights were eyes which
- 40:32according to the Egyptian tales, changed colour from blue to red.
- 40:36An image of this vehicle can be found in the bonus PDF under
- 40:40Figure 8. There were ups and downs in the
- 40:43battles which lasted several days.
- 40:45Horace shot at Seth from out of the Gnar, A specially designed
- 40:49harpoon, and Seth was hurt losing his testicles.
- 40:54This only made him matter in the final battle over the Sinai
- 40:58Peninsula. Seth shot a beam of fire at
- 41:00Horace, and Horace lost an eye. The great gods called a truce
- 41:05and met in council. After some wavering and
- 41:08indecision, the Lord of Earth ruled in favour of giving Egypt
- 41:12to Horace, declaring him the legitimate heir in the raw
- 41:15Osiris line of succession. Thereafter, Horace was usually
- 41:19depicted with the attributes of a Falcon, while Seth was shown
- 41:23as an Asiatic deity symbolized by the ass, the burden animal of
- 41:28the nomads. An example of this can be found
- 41:32in the bonus PDF under Figure 7. The accession of Horus to the
- 41:37reunited throne of the Two lands, Upper Egypt and Lower
- 41:41Egypt, remained throughout Egyptian history.
- 41:44The point at which kingship was given its perpetual divine
- 41:47connection, for every pharaoh was deemed a successor of Horus
- 41:52and the occupier of the throne of Osiris.
- 41:55For unexplained reasons, the rule of Horus was followed by a
- 41:59period of chaos and decline. How long this lasted, no one
- 42:03knows. Finally, circa 3200, BCA
- 42:07dynastic race arrived in Egypt and a man named Meanies ascended
- 42:12the throne of a reunited Egypt. It was then that the gods
- 42:16granted Egypt civilization and what we now call religion.
- 42:21The kinship that was begun by Meanies continued through 26
- 42:25dynasties of Pharaohs until the Persian domination in 525 BC,
- 42:31and then through Greek and Roman times when the famed Cleopatra
- 42:34reigned. When Meanies, the first pharaoh,
- 42:38established the United Kingdom, he chose a midpoint in the Nile,
- 42:42just South of Heliopolis, as the place for the capital of the two
- 42:46Egypts. Emulating the works of Pata, he
- 42:50built Memphis on an artificial mound raised above the Nile's
- 42:54waters and dedicated its temples to Pata.
- 42:58Memphis remained at the political religious centre of
- 43:00Egypt for more than 1000 years, but circa 2200 BC, great
- 43:06upheavals befell Egypt, the nature of which is not clear to
- 43:09scholars. Some think that Asiatic invaders
- 43:12of around the country, enslaving the people and disrupting the
- 43:15worship of their gods. Wherever semblance of Egyptian
- 43:19independence remained, it was retained in Upper Egypt, the
- 43:23less accessible regions farther South.
- 43:26When order was restored some 150 years later, political,
- 43:31religious power, the attributes of kinship, flowed from Thebes,
- 43:35an old but until then unimposing city in Upper Egypt on the banks
- 43:40of the Nile. Its God was called Amen, the
- 43:44Hidden One, the very God Amen, whom Alexander had searched out
- 43:48as his true divine father. As supreme deity he was
- 43:52worshipped as Amen RA, the Hidden RA, and it is not clear
- 43:57whether he was the very same RA but now somehow unseen or
- 44:01hidden, or another deity. The Greeks called Thebes
- 44:06Diaspolis the city of Zeus, for they acquainted Ammon with their
- 44:11supreme God Zeus. This fact made it easier for
- 44:14Alexander to affiliate himself with Ammon, and it was to Thebes
- 44:19that he rushed after he had received Ammon's favourable
- 44:22Oracle at the Oasis of Siwa. There at Thebes and its
- 44:27precincts, now known as Karnak Luxor Diaarel Bahari, Alexander
- 44:33came upon the extensive shrines and monuments to Ammon,
- 44:37impressive to this very day. Although they stand empty and in
- 44:41ruins, they were built mostly by 12th dynasty Pharaohs, one of
- 44:46whom was probably the Cessan Chooses who had searched for the
- 44:50waters of life 1500 years before Alexander.
- 44:54One of the colossal temples was built by Queen Hatshepsut, who
- 44:59was also said to have been a daughter of the God Ammon.
- 45:02Such tales of divine parentage were not unusual.
- 45:05The Pharaohs claimed to divine status based on the mere fact of
- 45:09occupying the throne of Osiris was sometimes augmented by
- 45:13assertions that the ruler was the son or the brother of this
- 45:16or that God or goddess. Scholars consider such
- 45:20statements to have only symbolic meaning, but some Egyptian
- 45:23Pharaohs, such as 3 kings of the 5th Dynasty, maintained that
- 45:28they were actually physically the sons of the God RA, begotten
- 45:32by him when he impregnated the wife of the high priest in his
- 45:36own temple. Other kings attributed their
- 45:39descent from RA to more sophisticated means.
- 45:42It was claimed that RA embodied himself in the reigning Pharaoh,
- 45:46through which subterfu she could then have intercourse with the
- 45:49queen. Thereby the heir to the throne
- 45:52could claim direct descent of RA.
- 45:55But apart from such specific claims to be of divine seed,
- 45:59every pharaoh was theologically deemed to be the incarnation of
- 46:02Horus, and thus by extension the son of the God Osiris.
- 46:07Consequently, the Pharaoh was entitled to eternal life in the
- 46:10very same manner experienced by Osiris, to resurrection after
- 46:15death to an afterlife. It was this circle of gods and
- 46:20God like Pharaohs that Alexander longed to join.
- 46:24The belief was that RA and the other immortal gods managed to
- 46:28live forever because he kept rejuvenating himself.
- 46:32Accordingly, the Pharaohs bore names, meaning, for example, he
- 46:36who repeats birds and repeater of births.
- 46:39The gods rejuvenated themselves by partaking of divine food and
- 46:44beverage at their abode. Therefore, the kins attainment
- 46:47of an eternal afterlife called for his joining the gods in
- 46:51their abode so that he too could partake of their divine
- 46:55sustenances. The ancient incantations
- 46:58appealed to the gods to share with the deceased king their
- 47:02divine food. Take ye this king with you, that
- 47:05he may eat of that which ye eat, that he may drink, of which ye
- 47:09drink, that he may live on that whereupon ye live.
- 47:13And more specifically, as in a text from the pyramid of King
- 47:16Pepee, give thou sustenance to this king Pepee, from thy
- 47:20eternal sustenance, thy everlasting beverage.
- 47:24The departed Pharaoh hoped to draw his everlasting sustenance
- 47:28in the celestial realm of RA. On the imperishable * There, in
- 47:33the mystical field of offerings, or field of life, there grew the
- 47:36plant of life. A text in a pyramid of Pepe the
- 47:40first describes him as getting past guards with the appearance
- 47:44of pluned birds, to be met by the emissaries of Horus.
- 47:48With them he travelleth to the great lake, by which the great
- 47:52gods alight these great ones of the imperishable star.
- 47:56Give unto Pepe the plant of life, whereon they themselves do
- 48:00live, so that he may also live their own.
- 48:04Egyptian depictions showed the deceased sometimes with his
- 48:08wife, at this celestial paradise, sipping the waters of
- 48:12life, out of which there grows the tree of life with its life
- 48:16giving fruit the date pong. A depiction of this can be found
- 48:20in the bonus PDF under Figure 9. The celestial destination was
- 48:25the birth place of RA, to which he had returned from earth.
- 48:29There RA himself was constantly rejuvenated or reawakened by
- 48:34having the Goddess of the Four Jars pour him a certain elixir
- 48:37periodically. It was thus the King's hope to
- 48:41have the same goddess pour him too the elixir, and therewith
- 48:45refresh his heart to life. It was in these waters named
- 48:49Water of Youth, that Osiris rejuvenated himself.
- 48:53And so it was promised to the departed king Peppy, that Horus
- 48:57shall count for thee a second season of youth, that he shall
- 49:01renew thy youth in the waters whose name is Water of Youth.
- 49:05Resurrected to afterlife, even rejuvenated, the pharaoh
- 49:09attained a paradocyical life. His provision is among the gods.
- 49:14His water is wine, like that of RA.
- 49:17When RA eats, he gives to him. When RA drinks, he gives to him,
- 49:22and in a touch of 20th century psychotherapy, the text adds, he
- 49:27sleeps soundly every day. He fares better today than
- 49:30yesterday. The pharaoh seemed a little
- 49:33bothered by the paradox that he had to die first in order to
- 49:37attain immortality. As supreme ruler of the two
- 49:40lands of Egypt, he enjoyed the best possible life on earth, and
- 49:45the resurrection among the gods was an even more attractive
- 49:48prospect. Besides, it was only his earthly
- 49:51body that was to be embalmed and entombed, for the Egyptians
- 49:54believed that every person possessed a BA akin to what we
- 49:58call soul, which rose heavenward like a bird after death, and a.
- 50:03California variably translated double ancestral spirit essence
- 50:08personality through which form the Pharaoh was translated into
- 50:12his afterlife. Samuel Mercer, in his
- 50:16introduction to the Pyramid Texts, concluded that the ka
- 50:19stood for the mortal's personification of a God.
- 50:23In other words, the concept implied the existence and man of
- 50:27a divine element, a celestial or godly double who could resume
- 50:31life in the afterlife. But his afterlife was possible,
- 50:36it was not easily attained. The departed king had to
- 50:39traverse a long and challenging road and had to undergo
- 50:42elaborate ceremonial preparations before he could
- 50:45embark on his journey. The deification of the Pharaoh
- 50:49began with his purification and included embalm and
- 50:53mollification so that the dead king would resemble Osiris with
- 50:57all his members tied together. The embalmed Pharaoh was then
- 51:00carried in a funerary procession to a structure topped by a
- 51:04pyramid, in front of which there stood an Oval shaped pillar.
- 51:09An image of the funerary procession can be found in the
- 51:12bonus PDF under Figure 10. Within this funerary temple,
- 51:16priestly rites were conducted with a view to achieving for the
- 51:20pharaoh acceptance at journey's end.
- 51:23The ceremonies, called in the Egyptian funerary texts the
- 51:26opening of the mouth, were supervised by a Shem priest,
- 51:30always depicted wearing a leopard skin.
- 51:33This is shown in Figure 11 in the bonus PDF.
- 51:37Scholars believe that the ritual was literally what its name
- 51:40implies. The priest, using a bent copper
- 51:43or iron tool, opened the mouth of the mummy or of a statue
- 51:48representing the departed king. But it is clear that the
- 51:52ceremony was primarily symbolic, intended to open for the
- 51:55deceased the mouth or entranceway to the heavens.
- 51:59The mummy by then was tied up tight in many layers of material
- 52:04and surmounted by the King's golden death mask.
- 52:07Thus, the touching of its mouth or that of the King's statue
- 52:12could have been only symbolical. Indeed, the priest intoned not
- 52:16the deceased but the gods to open the mouth so that the
- 52:20pharaoh could ascend toward eternal life.
- 52:23Special appeals were made to the Eye of Horus, lost by him in the
- 52:27battle with Seth, to cause the opening of the mouth, so that a
- 52:31path shall be opened for the Cain among the shiny ones, that
- 52:36he may be established among them.
- 52:38The earthly, and thus by conjecture only temporary tomb
- 52:41of the Pharaoh, according to the texts and actual archaeological
- 52:45discoveries, had a false door on its eastern side, IE the masonry
- 52:51was built there to look like a doorway, but it was actually a
- 52:54solid wall purified with all limbs tied together opened of
- 52:58mouth. The Pharaoh was then envisioned
- 53:01as raising himself, shaking off earth's dust and exiting by the
- 53:05false door. According to a pyramid text
- 53:08which dealt with the resurrection process step by
- 53:10step, the Pharaoh could not pass through the Stonewall by
- 53:14himself. Thou standest at the doors which
- 53:17hold people back, the text said, Until he who is chief of the
- 53:21department, a divine messenger in charge of this task, comes
- 53:25out to thee, he lays hold on thy arm and takes thee to heaven to
- 53:30thy father. Aided thus by divine messenger,
- 53:34the Pharaoh was out of his sealed tomb through the false
- 53:37door, and the priests broke out in a chant.
- 53:40The king is on his way to heaven.
- 53:42The king is on his way to heaven.
- 53:45The king is on his way to heaven.
- 53:47The king is on his way to heaven on the wind.
- 53:49On the wind he is not hindered. There is no one by whom he is
- 53:54hindered. The king is on his own son of
- 53:57the gods. His bread will come on high with
- 54:00RA. His offering will come out of
- 54:02the heavens. The king is he who comes again.
- 54:07But before the departed king could ascend to heaven to eat
- 54:10and drink with the gods, he had to undertake an arduous and
- 54:13hazardous journey. His goal was a land called
- 54:17Netter Kurt, the land of the mountain gods.
- 54:20It was sometimes written pictorially in hieroglyphic by
- 54:24surmounting the symbol for God Netter upon a ferry boat.
- 54:29And indeed, to reach that land, the Pharaoh had to cross a long
- 54:32and winding lake of reeds. The marshy waters could be
- 54:36crossed with the aid of a divine fairyman.
- 54:38But before he would ferry the Pharaoh over, he questioned the
- 54:42king about his origins. What made him think he had the
- 54:46right to cross over? Was he a son of a God or a
- 54:49goddess? Beyond the lake, past a desert
- 54:52and a chain of mountains, past various guardian gods, lay the
- 54:56Duat, a magical abode for rising to the stars, whose location and
- 55:00name have baffled the scholars. Some view it as the nether
- 55:05world, be abode of the spirits, where the king must go, as
- 55:08Osiris did. Others believe it was an
- 55:11underworld. And indeed much of its scenes
- 55:14were of a subterranean world of tunnels and caverns with unseen
- 55:18gods, pools of boiling waters, eerie lights, chambers guarded
- 55:23by birds, doors that open by themselves.
- 55:27This magical land was divided into 12 divisions and was
- 55:31traversed in 12 hours. The Duat was further perplexing
- 55:36because in spite of its terrestrial nature, it was
- 55:39reached after crossing through a mountain pass or subterranean
- 55:43aspects. Its name was written
- 55:45hieroglyphically with a star and a soaring Falcon as its
- 55:50determinatives or simply with a star within a circle denoting A
- 55:54celestial or heavenly association.
- 55:56Baffling as it has been, the fact is that the Pyramid Texts,
- 56:00as they followed the Pharaoh's progress through his life,
- 56:03death, resurrection, and translation to an afterlife,
- 56:07considered the human problem to be the inability to fly as the
- 56:11gods do. One text summed up this problem
- 56:15and its solution in two sentences.
- 56:17Men are buried, the gods fly up, 'cause this king to fly to
- 56:22heaven, to be among his brothers, the gods.
- 56:25A text inscribed in the pyramid of King Teti expressed the
- 56:29Pharaoh's hope and appeal to the gods.
- 56:31In these words men fall. They have no name.
- 56:36Seize thou King Teti by his arms.
- 56:39Take thou King Teti to the sky, that he die not on earth among
- 56:43men. And so it was incumbent upon the
- 56:46king to reach the hidden place and go through its subterranean
- 56:51labyrinths until he could find there a God who carries the
- 56:55emblem of the Tree of Life and a God who is the herald of Heaven.
- 56:59They will open for him secret gates and lead him to the Eye of
- 57:03Horus, A celestial ladder into which he would step, an object
- 57:08which can change shoes to blue and red as it is powered.
- 57:12And then himself turned into the Falcon God, he would soar
- 57:16skyward to the eternal afterlife on the imperishable star.
- 57:21There RA himself would welcome him.
- 57:24The gates of heaven are opened for thee.
- 57:26The doors of the Cool place are opened for thee.
- 57:29Thou shalt find Rah standing waiting for thee.
- 57:33He will take your hand. He will take thee to the dual
- 57:36Shrine of Heaven. He will place thee on the throne
- 57:39of Osiris. Thou shalt stand supported,
- 57:42equipped as a God among the Eternals on the Imperishable
- 57:46Star. Much of what is known to day on
- 57:49the subject comes from the Pyramid Texts.
- 57:52Thousands of verses combined into hundreds of utterances that
- 57:56were discovered, embossed, or painted in the hieroglyphic
- 58:00writing of ancient Egypt on the walls, passages, and galleries
- 58:04of the pyramids of five Pharaohs, Unas Teti, Pepe the
- 58:08First Mirenra, and Pepe the Second, who ruled Egypt from
- 58:13circa 2350 BC to 2180 BC. These texts were sorted out and
- 58:19numbered by Kurt Seth in his masterful The Altagiptician
- 58:24Pyramidine Texte, which has remained the major reference
- 58:29source, together with the English counterpart, the Pyramid
- 58:33Texts by Samuel AB Mercer. The thousands of verses that
- 58:37make up the Pyramid Texts seem to be just a collection of
- 58:41repetitious, unconnected incantations, appeals to the
- 58:45gods, or exhortations of the king to make some sense of the
- 58:49material. Scholars have developed theories
- 58:51about shifting theologies in ancient Egypt, a conflict and
- 58:55then a merger between a solar religion and a sky religion, a
- 58:59priesthood of RA and one of Osiris, and so on.
- 59:03Pointing out that we deal with material that has been
- 59:05accumulated over millennia. To scholars who view the mass of
- 59:10verses as expressions of primitive mythologies, segments
- 59:14of the imagination of people who cowered in fear as the wind
- 59:17howled and the Thunder ward, and called these phenomena gods, the
- 59:22verses remain as puzzling and confusing as ever.
- 59:26But these verses, all scholars agree, were extracted by the
- 59:29ancient scribes from older and apparently well organized,
- 59:33cohesive and comprehensible scriptures.
- 59:37Later inscriptions on sarcophagi and coffins, as well as on
- 59:41papyrus, the latter usually accompanied by illustrations,
- 59:46indeed show that the verses, utterances and chapters bearing
- 59:49such names as Chapter of Those Who Ascend were copied from
- 59:53Books of the Dead, which bore such titles as that which is in
- 59:58the Duat, the Book of the Gates, the Book of the Two Ways.
