Latest / Faith On A Hill / Layers of Security What We Can Do to Stop Sin Before it Comes - R. Barber

- 0:01Good evening.
- 0:03In the world of security, we have this term called defense in depth.
- 0:09And this is true whether it's physical security, cybersecurity.
- 0:13The idea being it's a framework, uh, think of like layers, if you will.
- 0:18And so um, so for example, like cybersecurity, when you if you're to log into your bank, you need a username and a password that's unique to you.
- 0:27And then they'll send you a code, right?
- 0:28They'll text you a code or they'll email you a code.
- 0:31And then you need that code to log in.
- 0:33They're trying to make sure that you are who you say you are.
- 0:36And that's an example of defense in depth.
- 0:39That's what's known as multi-factor authentication, right?
- 0:43Something you know, something you have.
- 0:45And then and so physical security.
- 0:48Also, um, has anyone been inside of a federal building before?
- 0:51Right?
- 0:51If you go or an airport.
- 0:53You go in, you get screened, right?
- 0:55Your bags get checked, you get checked.
- 0:57And so these are just things like layers of defense to try to protect uh things that are important.
- 1:04So protect the facilities, protect data, or most importantly, protect human life.
- 1:11If you ever gone to Walmart or uh Target or any building for that matter, have you ever seen um what looks like flower pots in the front?
- 1:19Looks like decorations, right?
- 1:21Those are called ballards.
- 1:22And essentially what that is, is they're physical p concrete pillars to block from like a car, you know, driving in the front.
- 1:30Right.
- 1:31And so it's those those is that's just examples of defense in depth.
- 1:36And so this framework, it's it's important, like I said, like I mentioned, because when it comes to protecting things that are important to us.
- 1:44This morning we talked about true repentance, Psalm 51.
- 1:48We examine David's sin and Bathsheba and how, after being confronted by Nathan, David acknowledged his wrongdoing and he appealed to God's mercy.
- 1:58This evening I want us to consider a different question.
- 2:01What if David never committed adultery in the first place?
- 2:05What if David had stopped before his sin progressed to deception and to murder?
- 2:11What if he had simply walked away?
- 2:13You see, this morning we discussed what to do after we sinned.
- 2:17Tonight I want to discuss what we can do to prevent sin before it happens.
- 2:22Our text comes from Psalm 1:1.
- 2:25Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful.
- 2:34And so notice those three words from that verse: walk, stand, sit.
- 2:39There's a progression there.
- 2:41As the man, he begins by walking and then he stops, and then he stands.
- 2:47And then eventually he sits down.
- 2:49So for David specifically, what began as something temporary has become something more permanent.
- 2:55And so this evening I want to discuss how David's sin followed that same progression, starting with walk.
- 3:01And so David he entertained temptation.
- 3:05Second Samuel 11, verses 2 and 3 says, Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king's house.
- 3:13And from the roof
- 3:15He saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold.
- 3:19So David sent and inquired about the woman.
- 3:21And someone said, Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
- 3:27So David, as we mentioned this morning, he's walking on the palace.
- 3:30He sees Bathsheba bathing.
- 3:32And that's not necessarily a sin, right?
- 3:35He's not intending to do that.
- 3:36It's just something he happens upon.
- 3:39And so what happens next?
- 3:40Verse three says, David inquired about the woman.
- 3:43And so he went from
- 3:44Seeing something he wasn't supposed to see, and then he escalates it into a qu inquiring about her specifically.
- 3:52He could have turned away, but instead he pursued his desire.
- 3:55And when we learned what she was, he learned that she was the wife of Uriah, he still continued on.
- 4:01And this is where we see the beginning of David's progression for his sin.
- 4:05He allowed temptation to develop into sinful action.
- 4:09James 1:14 tells us: but every man is tempted.
- 4:12When he's drawn away of his own lust and enticed.
- 4:15And so temptation itself is not a sin.
- 4:19Jesus was tempted and yet he was without sin.
- 4:22Hebrews 4:15.
- 4:23The problem is when we entertain sinful desires, we place ourselves in danger of giving into them.
- 4:30And so how often do we do the same thing?
- 4:33We see something inappropriate that we're not supposed to see, but in and instead of scrolling past it, we continue to look.
- 4:40We hear gossip and instead of walking away, we continue to listen.
- 4:44We become angry with someone, and we instead of controlling our emotions, rather, we continue thinking about what they did to us.
- 4:52So the first step to preventing sin is recognizing temptation and refusing to entertain it.
- 4:59David could have stopped when he saw Bathsheba.
- 5:01He could have stopped when he learned she was married, but he continued and his sin progressed on.
- 5:07And so stand.
- 5:09David acted on his desire.
- 5:10ah Verse four says David sent messengers, and he took her and he came into him and she and he lay with her.
- 5:18So David moved beyond entertaining temptation.
- 5:21He acted upon it.
- 5:22He committed adultery with Bathsheba.
- 5:24Shortly after, Bathsheba sent David a message.
- 5:28I am with child, verse five.
- 5:30And so now David has a problem.
- 5:32Rather than acknowledging his sin, David attempts to conceal it.
- 5:37He summoned, as we mentioned this morning, he summoned Ryah from the battle to cover up his sin, but his attempts were unsuccessful.
- 5:43And so notice that progression.
- 5:45He saw, he desired, he acted, he deceived.
- 5:49What began as a sinful desire now developed into adultery and deception.
- 5:55David simply wasn't just committing one sin anymore.
- 5:58He was committing additional sins to conceal the first one.
- 6:02Proverbs 28:13: He who covers his sins will not prosper.
- 6:07But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.
- 6:11Sometimes when we sin, instead of stopping, uh, we attempt to justify or conceal our actions.
- 6:19We tell more lies, uh, and then we need more lies to cover that initial lie that we started with.
- 6:25And so we commit one sinful act and then we commit other sins to avoid the consequences.
- 6:32Sin becomes more dangerous when we attempt to protect it rather.
- 6:37Than turning away from it.
- 6:38And so David's attempt to conceal his adultery, it failed.
- 6:42And instead of stopping, he went even further.
- 6:45Three, sit.
- 6:46David became entrenched in his sin.
- 6:49So David, he realized that Uriah uh would not return to his wife.
- 6:53He developed another plan, as we know.
- 6:54Um he arranged for Uriah to be killed, and then now it just gets longer and longer.
- 7:00Look, lust, adultery, deception, murder.
- 7:05James 1:15 describes this progression.
- 7:07It says, Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin.
- 7:10And sin when it is finished, brings forth death.
- 7:14Sin rarely announces how far it intends to take us.
- 7:18David likely did not begin that evening intending to murder Uriah, but one sinful decision led to another.
- 7:25And eventually David found himself responsible for the death of an innocent man.
- 7:30So this leads us back to Psalm 1.
- 7:32Walk
- 7:33Stan sit.
- 7:34The psalmist describes a person becoming increasingly settled among the wicked.
- 7:38David's story shows us how sinful choices can become increasingly serious when left unchecked.
- 7:45We must be careful not to be comfortable with sin.
- 7:48The longer we entertain our temptations, the easier it can be to justify our sinful actions.
- 7:55And the more we justify our actions, the harder it is to turn away.
- 7:59The best time to stop sin.
- 8:01Is before we commit it.
- 8:03But if we have already sinned, the next best time to stop it is now.
- 8:07And that's where the idea of the defense in depth comes in.
- 8:10What could have David done differently?
- 8:12You know, we talked about his repentance in Psalm 151.
- 8:16We saw how he acknowledged God, he acknowledged the sin.
- 8:19He appealed to God's mercy.
- 8:21And tonight we examine the decisions that brought David to that point of needing to repent.
- 8:26But let's all consider something, how different the story would be if David had simply just turned away when he first saw Bathsheba.
- 8:34Uriah might still be alive.
- 8:36David would not have committed adultery.
- 8:38There would have been no pregnancy resulting from uh that adultery, no cover-up, no murder.
- 8:45All of these consequences could have been avoided uh if David had refused to pursue his sinful desires initially.
- 8:53And so here's what we need to remember for someone.
- 8:55It doesn't tell us, uh doesn't only tell us what the blessed man avoids, it says what he does.
- 9:00Psalm 12.
- 9:02But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
- 9:10The blessed man doesn't simply avoid sin, he fills his mind with God's word.
- 9:16And that's how we can guard ourselves against temptation.
- 9:19When we delight in God's word, meditate upon it day and night, allow it to guide our decisions.
- 9:25We are better equipped to recognize temptation and turn away from it.
- 9:29And so this morning we learned what to do when we've sinned.
- 9:32Tonight we've learned the importance of stopping it before it even progresses.
- 9:36David's story reminds us that sin can be uh begin with a single decision and progress into something far more destructive.
- 9:45And so before we entertain that thought, before we take that action, before we attempt to justify what we know is wrong, remember the progression described in Psalm 1.
- 9:55Walk, stand, sit.
- 9:58Don't allow yourself to be comfortable with sin.
- 10:01Psalm 119, 11, your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not that I might not sin against you.
- 10:09And so that defense in depth for us as Christians is God's word.
- 10:12And so if you are here tonight and you're living in sin, the blood of Jesus Christ continues to cleanse us.
- 10:18And if we repent, it's conditional on our repentance.
- 10:22It's also conditional.
- 10:23On us being part of the body of Christ.
- 10:25And if you are not a member of the Lord's church, we would love nothing more than to make that happen tonight.
- 10:30If you have any need at all, please come as we stand and sing this song of encouragement.
