- 1:13SPEAKER_02: Hello, it's so pleasant.
- 1:14SPEAKER_06: And it's a pleasant day.
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: Hey, if you've been following along with our Big Dog Game Plan series and we're glad to get back into it, right?
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: Great guest speakers that we've had in here talking about.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: We've been busy.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: We've been biscuit out there, right?
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: Benny Harmony.
- 1:29SPEAKER_06: Benny.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: John Griffle, Bobby Bates, Blake Middleton.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: Blake Middleton.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: Gosh, we've just been bringing them in, right?
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: People just love it.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: They love it.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: Our followers and listeners love it.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: I actually ran into uh someone who said the other day, he's like, My gosh, my wife listens to your stuff all the time.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: I go to her to see what you're doing and what you're up to.
- 1:47SPEAKER_06: I love it.
- 1:48SPEAKER_06: That's awesome.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: That's great.
- 1:50SPEAKER_06: I've been approached, like, we're the McCupin County news, McCupin County Press.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: Well, Central Illinois.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: I mean, we're we're beyond just we are.
- 1:57SPEAKER_06: You're right.
- 1:58SPEAKER_06: I mean, Ben, Central Illinois and beyond.
- 2:00SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: All the way to the White House, all the way to Air Force.
- 2:03SPEAKER_09: Right.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: Bom, bump, bump.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: Now that's awesome.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: So you've been following us along, right?
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: On this big dog game plan series.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: We're back into it.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: We've already covered the foundation of every successful remodel, right?
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: In episode one, we talked about planning your project the right way.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: Episode two is all about building a realistic budget.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: And then we tackled one of the biggest questions homeowners ask is should I do it myself?
- 2:27unknown: Right.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: Hire a professional.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: So today we are taking the next step because even if you have a budget, even if you decided who's doing the work, your project can still fall apart if one thing isn't crystal clear, Caitlin, is the scope.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: The scope.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: And I can tell you, after years in this business, almost 30, most remodeling problems don't start with bad construction.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: They start with unclear expectations.
- 2:55SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: So today we're going to show you how professionals defined a project before the first hammer ever swung, whether that be a 20-ouncer, 24 ouncer, or a big eight-pound sledge.
- 3:07SPEAKER_05: I was just going to say we have to bring the sledge back.
- 3:09SPEAKER_02: Bring the sledge, right?
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: But before we do that, let's give a huge shout out to our 10x partner for our podcast.
- 3:17SPEAKER_02: And that is Elite Roofing Professionals.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: That is them over there covering all of Central Illinois as well and branched into Ohio.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: I was just going to say, yeah.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: So Midwest swing, man.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, with our uh listeners and followers.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: I know we've got a few up in Ohio now starting, right?
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: So that's awesome.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: So if you're thinking about your roof, we've had so many storms roll through recently.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: Last Friday night, right?
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: We had the 62626 event, right?
- 3:43SPEAKER_06: I mean, I truly wasn't shocked that it ha happened on that day because usually we get it during the fair, Chris.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 3:51SPEAKER_06: But we had a good fair this year, so this is why this happened.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: But your mind's gonna be blown because that storm that rolled through after it was done, like at 1030-ish or something, right?
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: Or 10, whenever that came through here, we got struck by lightning.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: My tree out front of the of the showroom here exploded.
- 4:08SPEAKER_07: Wait, wait.
- 4:09SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 4:09SPEAKER_07: What?
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: Yes, I had bark launched like 30, 40 feet out and huge six foot long chunks of the tree.
- 4:17SPEAKER_06: Had you already gone home or did you see it that night?
- 4:19SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: Oh no, I'd already gone home.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: I'd already gone home.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: So we know that shit happens.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: Really does.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: And and I immediately Saturday morning before we knew it, and I checked my cameras.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: I'm like, okay, all right, we're good.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: We still have power here.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: The showroom didn't get struck by the lightning.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: The tree took the impact, and you can see it all the way down where it blew the moss off the north side and into the ground.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: And thanks to Bircham tree removal, they came out and already cleaned up the debris.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: Oh, they're awesome.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: Later, they're going to be dropping the whole tree because it is a huge.
- 4:49SPEAKER_06: They did, they took my trees down too.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: Holy snap.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: But anyway, when those storms happen, because we don't know what they're going to do, the professionals at Elite Roofing can take care of you, right?
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: And they know it all.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: They're very professional.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: Blake and his crew, they can be reached at 217-851-3836 or find them on the interweb, right?
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: We love that.
- 5:10SPEAKER_06: We love it.
- 5:11SPEAKER_06: And they're very active.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: They are eliteroofingprofessionals.com.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: They are active on their socials.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: You can find them.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: You can see videos of homes they're doing, right?
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: Projects they're doing.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: I actually think they're just doing a big commercial project I hear recently.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: Big large project.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: So all kinds of good stuff.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: We'll talk to them about it later.
- 5:27SPEAKER_06: It was a public library they just did too.
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, that's a big commercial.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: So, but anyway, hey, let's jump right in to our topic of what is a scope for today's series, right?
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: And it's a simple question.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: What is a project scope?
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: What does that mean to you, Caitlin?
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: What does a project scope mean to you?
- 5:48SPEAKER_06: That would mean the plan.
- 5:50SPEAKER_06: And the plan inside of it would mean obviously how much you're spending, who's doing it, what you want it to look like.
- 5:57SPEAKER_06: Am I missing something that maybe I would think No, no, you're good.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: You're good.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: The plan, the scope, right.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: A lot of people think is simply just a written estimate, right?
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: It's not a scope.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: It's not with you.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: It's the complete picture of what it is.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: And just as importantly, isn't included in your project.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: It's here.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: So let's just give you an example with this, right?
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: A homeowner says, I want a new kitchen.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: Some contractors will go, uh, new kitchen or model, 25,000 foot.
- 6:27SPEAKER_06: Right, right.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: No.
- 6:28SPEAKER_06: It's not customized.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: What does that mean?
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: Are we replacing the cabinets?
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: Are we painting the cabinets?
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: Are we keeping existing layout, moving the plumbing, installing new flooring, updating electrical, adding lighting, replacing drywall, installing countertops, backsplash appliances?
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: Every answer changes the budget.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: Every answer changes the timeline, and every answer changes the final result.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: Correct.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: And that's why we spend so much time asking questions before we ever talk about construction.
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: That's why our designers here at our showroom actually will ask the questions.
- 7:00SPEAKER_02: Are we replacing the cabinets?
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: Great.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: What style of cabinets would you like to do?
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: Natural finished wood?
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: Perfect.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: Lovely.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: Painted, no problem.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: Are we going to do the same color on the base or walls?
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: Are we going to have a different accent color?
- 7:14SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: Is the the is the island going to be a different color?
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: Natural stain there.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: We're doing a kitchen now where we have painted exterior of the perimeter cabinets, and the island is a beautifully stained cherry.
- 7:28SPEAKER_06: My sister has that.
- 7:29SPEAKER_06: What's that called?
- 7:29SPEAKER_06: Like dual, it's called something that design.
- 7:31SPEAKER_06: I like that.
- 7:32SPEAKER_06: Dual design?
- 7:33SPEAKER_06: Or it's like dual color.
- 7:35SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I don't know.
- 7:36SPEAKER_06: But I I really like that.
- 7:37SPEAKER_06: But there's so many things that people have to ask and they don't know what to ask.
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 7:43SPEAKER_06: Which is why it's good that you're asking.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: And and that's what we want to make sure is we'll ask those questions.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: The big thing too is if we are moving the layout or changing the layout, some people say, I want to change the layout, but I don't want to move the key items, which is the stove, sink, and refrigerator.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: They used to call it the working triangle, is what you used to call it.
- 8:02SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it used to be the working triangle, and how are they in relationship to each other?
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: The sink to stove to refrigerator.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: Because cooking.
- 8:10SPEAKER_06: Yeah, mine are all very close.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: So sometimes if you can have a triangle that is elongated out, or you can have a true I would rather it be bigger.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: Bigger.
- 8:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:21SPEAKER_06: I would rather make it.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: Everyone wants it bigger, Caitlin.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: I want it bigger.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: Gotcha.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: But hey, you know what?
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: So that's why we have with our clients, potential clients, is we have the big dog clarity session.
- 8:34SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 8:35SPEAKER_06: It's basically like a CNA.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: One of those things we teach our clients is confused homeowners make expensive decisions, right?
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: So clear homeowners make confident decisions.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: And that's why every project should begin with what we call that clarity session.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: And before talking products, before talking colors, before talking pricing, we answer five questions.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: What problem are we solving?
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: How does this space need to function?
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: What's most important?
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: What can wait?
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: And what would make this project a complete success?
- 9:08SPEAKER_06: Excellent questions.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: And those five questions, when asked, can be applied to kitchen remodel, master bedroom, bathroom, living room, exterior, whatever it is.
- 9:18SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 9:18SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: It's it's that clarity session to help bring those things together.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: Those questions can save thousands of dollars.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: Seriously.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: Because we're going to be talking about change orders a little bit further in this uh.
- 9:31SPEAKER_06: I also think it's going to save a lot of mental anguish, I guess, on both sides, because if people expect you guys at Big Dog or your designers to just know what's in their head, and then you guys don't deliver, then they're going to be pissy and got and we know how people get.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: We don't like pissy clients.
- 9:50SPEAKER_06: No, but you know what I'm saying?
- 9:51SPEAKER_06: And then so if everybody's in the know right at the beginning, problem solved.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: You know, and it is true, and and we'll get into this about clarity sessions that you can still have those change orders later, right?
- 10:02SPEAKER_06: But the You're staying in contact.
- 10:04SPEAKER_06: Correct.
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: The danger of assumptions.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: You know what assuming means, right?
- 10:09SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: Makes a big old ass out of you and me.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: And no one wants to be an ass.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: Well, anyway, we'll leave that one alone.
- 10:17SPEAKER_05: Depends who it is too.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: We'll leave that ass alone, right?
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: Perfect.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: So the dangers of assumption is here's something I tell homeowners all the time.
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: Assumptions are expensive.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: Have you ever heard someone say, I thought that was included?
- 10:32SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: Those six words have probably caused more remodeling frustration than anything else.
- 10:37SPEAKER_06: I've said those.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: I thought the painting was included.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: I thought we'd replace the trim.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: I thought permits were covered.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: I thought cleanup was included.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: Never assume.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: Ask, clarify, write it down.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: We as professionals love questions because questions prevent misunderstandings.
- 10:54SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: And that's why on our uh agreements that we send out to our clients, potential clients, and then eventually become clients, part of the big dog family, is it literally calls out line by line what we are doing.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: Obtain permits, layout for addition, excavate, form and pour footings, concrete footings, complete with rebar, right?
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: I would have been all the way through what we are down, all the way down to clean up and disposal the worry out of so as a homeowner.
- 11:28SPEAKER_06: I mean, I to to get that and have it like maybe you just wake up one night and you're like, man, I'm thinking about this house remodel.
- 11:35SPEAKER_09: Right.
- 11:35SPEAKER_06: And you can go get your paper or log on in, right?
- 11:38SPEAKER_06: And you can go back.
- 11:39SPEAKER_06: And if you got to call you the next day, or it's just very nicely done like that.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: It is.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: It is because no one likes surprises.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: And that's why when we tell people It's actually expensive ones.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: Oh, yes.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: And that's why we tell people the price you see is the price it will be, unless there's something we find, if it's a remodel we find behind a wall, like, hey, that is a load-bearing wall.
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: We thought it was not a load-bearing wall.
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: But when that happens, that's when we will stop and issue a written change order.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: A written change order literally references the date of the original contract so that it covers the original scope.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: And it will either be an addition to the original contract or it will be a removal of something from the original contract.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: See, we don't need to do this now because of and here's the price difference.
- 12:28SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 12:28SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: Change over could be add or takeaway.
- 12:31SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 12:31SPEAKER_02: I'm glad you brought that up.
- 12:32SPEAKER_06: Now I really want to ask, though, does anybody else really do this?
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: Some larger companies do.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: A lot of other good contractors that are don't have a brick and mortar, they may write it down in the notebook in the truck.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: Hey, the Smith job we're on, we're doing this, right?
- 12:50SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: But it's nothing that's formally presented.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 12:53SPEAKER_06: You know, I just feel like this I mean, not that you ever would do did anything wrong, but it saves you, it really keeps you safe.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: Like right now, we have like six major projects open, right?
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: And if we were just going off a memory of that one has a change order we talked about and verbally approved, that one's got a change order.
- 13:11SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: Usually what happens is big dog loses out.
- 13:14SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: Because we're doing additional work that was not originally on the on the original scope, right?
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: The original scope.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: We're talking about that scope.
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: But it's not to say that we haven't accepted verbal on on site.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: We're in the middle of it.
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: We're there.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: We tear a floor out.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: We're like, crap, you've got termite damage, old termite damage.
- 13:34SPEAKER_07: Right, right.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: Pivot.
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: We're gonna have to replace this and this and this.
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: Well, shit, we need a floor back tonight.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: Okay, it's gonna be X amount of dollars verbally.
- 13:43SPEAKER_02: Great, let's do it.
- 13:44SPEAKER_02: We then follow it up with an email confirmation.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: But on the spot, let's go.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: Yes, we accept those that price, let's move forward.
- 13:52SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I I can see that being okay like that.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: We we needed a floor in there so they can get in their home.
- 13:58SPEAKER_06: And especially you're sending it afterwards.
- 14:00SPEAKER_06: So you've got it right.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: So we own that, right?
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: But but it's everyone's least favorite phrase, and that's change orders, because usually we're like, oh my God.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: And and get it, some commercial contractors, right?
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: They have a bare minimum price of a change order.
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: If a change order is required, it's like a minimum of$2,000 or$5,000.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: Commercial projects.
- 14:23SPEAKER_02: We're talking about commercial projects.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: Got it, got it, got it.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: It's a minimum of$5,000 to do a change order because it slows the process.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it takes time for new materials.
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: Correct, right?
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: And you know, change orders aren't bad.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: They're necessary at times, like we talked about, the hidden damages or upgrade finishes.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: Some people were like, you know, I know you priced originally doing the the granite countertop, but you because of budgeting, I I went to laminate.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: But you know what?
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: That$2,000 difference, I think I really want to do the granite now.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: Great.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: Let's put the change order in place.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: Let's do the granite because we're getting close to that point where we're gonna go.
- 15:02SPEAKER_06: Right, right.
- 15:02SPEAKER_06: It doesn't, it's it's not always like in a negative.
- 15:05SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: Or we've had this happen a lot, is the client changes their mind after seeing the space come together, like, especially after demo.
- 15:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 15:16SPEAKER_10: Wow.
- 15:16SPEAKER_06: That's never, yes.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: Okay, now I understand why you were wanting to do this in the original and we told you no, let's put it back in.
- 15:25SPEAKER_06: But see, too, yeah.
- 15:27SPEAKER_06: It's helpful with your design team too, that where they can actually see a 3D version of it.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: And and then that that happens, but the problem is unnecessary change orders, right?
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: Those happen because the project wasn't clearly defined from the beginning.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: Every change change affects labor as well.
- 15:44SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 15:45SPEAKER_02: Someone has to touch materials, scheduling, and ultimately the budget.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: So the clearer your scope, the fewer surprises you'll face, aka change orders.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: But knowing change orders, literally, we we number them change order one, change order two, change order three, change order four, five, same account number.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: You know, oh, we're looking at this one, look at this one.
- 16:05SPEAKER_02: And so when we invoice, invoice, completion of change order one, boom, completion, change order two, boom, invoicing.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: So we try to clarify everything again.
- 16:15SPEAKER_06: I feel like you've got a really good, you've got a system in place.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: We try, right?
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: Everyone, every business needs to have as I know, it's making me like I got procedures.
- 16:24SPEAKER_06: The organization is top tier.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: Well, let's let's shift a little bit.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: It's 10X.
- 16:30SPEAKER_07: That's right.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: We want our clients and homeowners to think like a designer and not just a homeowner.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: So here's one mindset shift that can completely change your remodel.
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: Don't ask, what do I want my kitchen to look like?
- 16:45unknown: Okay.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: Instead, ask, how do I want my kitchen to work?
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 16:51SPEAKER_06: And that's that really is the point.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: Do you entertain?
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: Do you cook every night?
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: Do you need more storage?
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: Do you want better lighting?
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: As we get older, we need to put more lighting, right?
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: Do your kids gather around the island?
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: Do you even have an island?
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: Is it a table?
- 17:06SPEAKER_02: And you'd really like to have an island that's more of a functioning storage and a gathering point, right?
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: Design should always support the way you live.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: Then you can bring in the pretties.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: Let's get it functioning.
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: What what are you using the space for?
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: And that's what separates beautiful projects from truly functional homes that look amazing.
- 17:29SPEAKER_06: And that is really true.
- 17:30SPEAKER_06: Something I read years ago, even about decor, and I think we talked about it with Tamar before.
- 17:35SPEAKER_06: It was like majority of your decor in your kitchen should be, you use it, should be functional.
- 17:41SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 17:42SPEAKER_06: You don't need to put a bunch of like frilly stuff in.
- 17:44SPEAKER_06: But that is a good point because I'm guilty of that though in my kitchen.
- 17:48SPEAKER_06: You should see my I'm trying.
- 17:51SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 17:51SPEAKER_06: I got toys everywhere.
- 17:52SPEAKER_06: I don't know which is worse.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, toys in the kitchen?
- 17:55unknown: Everywhere.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: Oh, wait.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: I thought you told your kid you're gonna sell them.
- 17:58SPEAKER_06: I I did.
- 17:59SPEAKER_06: I said, if you guys aren't gonna let me work, you're selling every toy.
- 18:02unknown: No.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 18:03SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: Turn down your volume for that section, folks.
- 18:06SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
- 18:07SPEAKER_06: But see, that's but folks, that's what I have to deal with on a daily basis.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: No, that's what Chris has to deal with on a daily basis.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: Not this, Chris, your husband, Chris.
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 18:17SPEAKER_06: But the functionality, I I want to touch on that again.
- 18:20SPEAKER_06: Like, people have got to think about kids.
- 18:23SPEAKER_06: Like, I wish I would have thought about it because it's just there's so many of them in that kitchen and they're always in there, even if I say the kitchen's closed while I'm cooking.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: Kitchen's closed.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: I do.
- 18:33SPEAKER_06: I said kitchen's closed.
- 18:34SPEAKER_06: I'll let you know when so those are all great questions that you can help them discover and pull from their brains.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: Right during our clar clarity session.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: You know, and so yeah, like I said, I I am guilt, I have 10-foot ceilings in my kitchen.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: And so I don't have cabinets that go all the way up 10 foot, right?
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 18:53SPEAKER_06: So I have Oh, well, that's okay up there.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: And I've got antique glass whipping things they used to have and meat grinders and just well, that's cool.
- 19:03SPEAKER_06: That matches your house, your 1800s.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 1887.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: And so I have stuff like that.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: I have I have my grandmother's stone gravy bowl that she used to fill up every morning that she bought it.
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: My grandma's gravy bowl.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: She bought it for 10 cents at a yard sale somewhere.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: I mean, so it's got a crack and it's been it forever, but it's a little bit more.
- 19:20SPEAKER_06: I know, but that's cool.
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: So it's up there too, because I don't know.
- 19:23SPEAKER_06: But you would almost need something on top of your cabinets with it being that tall.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I have a nice big crown mold, but you can't do crown mold three feet tall crown mold.
- 19:33SPEAKER_06: Holy shit.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: That's some that's a hell of a crown mold.
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: That's Queen Elizabeth crown mold there.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: Anyway.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: Well, hey, this whole thing comes into the big dog process.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: Here's how we approach every project.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: First, we listen, then we ask questions.
- 19:50SPEAKER_02: Then we create solutions.
- 19:52SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: Only then do we build construction, you know, only then is when we build that, right?
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: Then construction is actually the easiest part.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: Planning is where the value is created because everyone understands the vision.
- 20:07SPEAKER_02: Construction becomes the predictable.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: That's our goal every time.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: That's a very good point.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: It's again that construction is the easiest part.
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: Planning is the difficult part because again, people can't see.
- 20:20SPEAKER_06: They can't, and we talked about it this morning, they can't visualize.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: But so and that's what our designers do is be able to show them in true 3D, and we can walk them through with colors and and textures and everything in the roll of fruit on the island if you want to see that.
- 20:36SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: We can do that.
- 20:37SPEAKER_06: With their indecisiveness, which, you know, hi.
- 20:41SPEAKER_06: She's pointing to herself, folks.
- 20:42SPEAKER_06: That's me.
- 20:43SPEAKER_06: So I feel like if you were able to see all that and you're able to touch all the textures here, too.
- 20:47SPEAKER_06: So right.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: And again, that's our goal every time.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: It's our goal.
- 20:51SPEAKER_02: Doesn't mean it always happens because you have those clients that are like, just get going.
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: I want to get it going and we will make it happen.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: They're the Grant Cardones, right?
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: It's like launch the rocket ship, then we'll figure out how to put seat belts in it after we launch.
- 21:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: Then we'll figure out how to get home after we launch.
- 21:07SPEAKER_09: That's my dad.
- 21:09SPEAKER_09: Just get the sledgehammer.
- 21:11SPEAKER_09: We'll figure it out after we blow the wall out.
- 21:14SPEAKER_09: Damn it, KDB.
- 21:15SPEAKER_09: Get the sledgehammer.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: So, hey, let's roll into a little big dog rapid fire real quick, okay?
- 21:22SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: Before we wrap up, here's where the big dog scope checklist.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: Can you answer these questions?
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: Rapid fire.
- 21:30SPEAKER_02: What exactly am I changing?
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: What is staying the same?
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: Have I selected my finishes?
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: Have I identified my must-haves?
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: Do I know my nice to haves?
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 21:41SPEAKER_02: Do I understand what is included?
- 21:44SPEAKER_02: And do I understand what is not included?
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: If you can't answer those questions, you're probably not ready to build.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: And that's okay.
- 21:52SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 21:53SPEAKER_06: I didn't even think about the finishes.
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: Spend a little more time planning.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: It'll save you a lot of time and money later.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Because you're talking about the finishes, right?
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: Again, we've we've touched on this months ago.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: We've been doing this a while and I love it.
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: I do too.
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: A lot of episodes.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: Love it.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: So, and again, you can find those on any of your favorite streaming services.
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: Favorite streaming service.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: I'm not drunk, folks.
- 22:15SPEAKER_05: It's the heat getting to him.
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: It's the heat.
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: I worked out inside this morning.
- 22:18SPEAKER_02: Anyway, I think my yeah, my vessels are about going down on my forehead now.
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: And the heat headache is.
- 22:23SPEAKER_05: You were so red.
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: Was I red or you were really red?
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: And it was it was a brittle.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: But anywho, if you haven't selected those finishes specifically, our designers are good about kind of honing in where you're they can start identifying people when they walk in the door and like their style.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: Their style, right?
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: And so we can put that allowance, that spending money.
- 22:43SPEAKER_02: We can put that allowances and shopping money inside of that total cost of the project.
- 22:48SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 22:49SPEAKER_02: And it literally will say provide and install, blah, blah, blah, cabinets, client to choose final style and color, and allowance has been allocated in this amount.
- 22:57SPEAKER_06: I love that you do that.
- 22:59SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: Because some people can't visualize it until the wall's blown out, right?
- 23:02SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 23:03SPEAKER_07: That's me.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: We just had that happen.
- 23:05SPEAKER_02: We we literally signed contract.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: This is what we're gonna do, removing one wall, expanding the kitchen into the dining room area, right?
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: And then they're like, oh no, let's go ahead and blow out the wall into the office area and make a larger area.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: And we want to extend the cabinets.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: So we had to do a change order to remove the wall and buy additional cabinetry and countertop to extend into that.
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: So it happens, right?
- 23:29SPEAKER_02: But we have allowance we had allowances in there for the cabinetry and countertop.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: So we just added change order to add more to those allowances.
- 23:36SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: The purchases.
- 23:37SPEAKER_06: And I think that that is a very good.
- 23:39SPEAKER_06: I know I'm probably not gonna say this right, but I think it's good for people to where they don't think that they're spending extra money.
- 23:46SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 23:46SPEAKER_06: But even though they are.
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but they're gonna save it in the long run.
- 23:50SPEAKER_06: Right, right.
- 23:51SPEAKER_02: Because they're they're gonna not have those regrets.
- 23:54SPEAKER_02: I wish I would have done this.
- 23:56SPEAKER_06: I had those because there was never allowance.
- 23:58SPEAKER_06: I had no regrets.
- 23:59SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I had regrets, man.
- 24:01SPEAKER_06: I did.
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: Not even a single leg.
- 24:04SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 24:05SPEAKER_02: Meet the pillars.
- 24:07SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 24:08SPEAKER_02: Hey, a little final thought before we wrap up for this day.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: I've said this before, but it's worth repeating.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: Construction doesn't begin with demolition.
- 24:16SPEAKER_02: Construction begins the moment you start planning.
- 24:19SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 24:20SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 24:20SPEAKER_02: Every great remodel is built twice.
- 24:23SPEAKER_02: Once on paper and once in your home, right?
- 24:26SPEAKER_02: The more effort you put into that first build, which is the planning, the smoother the second one will be.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: And so we do that.
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: Everything is done on paper, and that's why we call it out line by line what we're doing.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: So literally, our designers and estimators, when we're doing this, we're building the whole project in our head.
- 24:43SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: We literally, it's planned already.
- 24:45SPEAKER_02: We can see it visually.
- 24:46SPEAKER_06: You can you guys can see it, yeah.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: We can see it, right?
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: We know what's gonna happen.
- 24:49SPEAKER_02: So we're building it.
- 24:50SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: And then when we present that to you, we are building that vision with you as well, line by line, for instance, right?
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: Then it does make it when the second building.
- 24:59SPEAKER_06: I like how you that was like that.
- 25:01SPEAKER_06: You build it twice.
- 25:02SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 25:02SPEAKER_06: That's I love that.
- 25:03SPEAKER_06: Designing and building.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: Imagine that.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: A hell of a name.
- 25:07SPEAKER_05: It really is.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: You should coin that.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: Maybe how about big dog design and build?
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: Man, that would be phenomenal.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna change the name of our company right freaking now.
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: Hey, well, hey, here's a little call to action for you, right?
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: If you're thinking about remodeling your home, don't start with a contractor.
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: Sounds weird, right?
- 25:30SPEAKER_06: You start with asking yourself those questions.
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: Start with a plan.
- 25:33SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: The rapid fire, right?
- 25:36SPEAKER_02: So make sure if you want our big dog remodel game plan checklist, which we said we've had that several episodes back, and walk through each step before you spend a dollar, email me, Chris at bigdogcc.com.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: Or info at big dogcc.com.

- 25:52SPEAKER_02: Give us a call at 217-970-7340.
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: If you need to slow down your speed, you can do that.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: Or I can go 21707-970-7340.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: Don't forget them little dashes in between the 217 and the 970 and the 7340.
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: There's little dashes in there.
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: Oh much.
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: But I don't think you hit a dash on the phone.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: I think you just hit the 10 digits and just get it.
- 26:14SPEAKER_06: Just the 10 digits.
- 26:15SPEAKER_02: Might be 11, depending on you're still on a landline or not, right?
- 26:18SPEAKER_06: I mean, he's for straight from Texas.
- 26:20SPEAKER_06: I mean, first he was from London this morning.
- 26:23SPEAKER_06: Now he's Texas, Alabama.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: We'd love to get you that big dog remodeled game plan checklist.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: Again, if you haven't figured out now, folks, we're here to educate, entertain, and get you what you didn't know, right?
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: Because this is a podcast you didn't.
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: You didn't know you needed.
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's right.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: And guess what?
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: You got it.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: You do need it.
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: Hey, if you'd like help defining your project, our team at Big Dog Construction would love to sit down with you.

- 26:55SPEAKER_02: I mean it's success is my duty.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: I wear it on my wrist every day, have for several years now.
- 26:59SPEAKER_06: Yep, you are very much like that to everybody.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: Because at Big Dog Construction, we're not looking for a one-time customer.
- 27:05SPEAKER_02: We're looking to earn a client for life.
- 27:07SPEAKER_05: Ohanu family.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry.
- 27:10SPEAKER_05: It isn't Ohanu family.
- 27:12SPEAKER_02: Ohanu.
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: Now we're in.
- 27:17SPEAKER_05: Why are you so good at all these accents?
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 27:21SPEAKER_02: If construction thing doesn't work out, I'll just take it to the stage.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: I'll go on the road.
- 27:24SPEAKER_10: It's all good.
- 27:25SPEAKER_10: We go now, grassaba.
- 27:28SPEAKER_10: Ah, take the pebble from my stone, grassaba.
- 27:31SPEAKER_10: You become the teacher when you do that.
- 27:33SPEAKER_10: Fool you.
- 27:34SPEAKER_05: Now he's Mr.
- 27:35SPEAKER_05: Miyagi.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: I'm impressed.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: You know what?
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: Thank you for joining us.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: This has been great.
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: I love having guests in here.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: I do, but I like our one-on-one.
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: I do too.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: I do too.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: It's great.
- 27:47SPEAKER_06: It's excitement.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: It's fun.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: Right.
