- 0:00Speaker 1: And it's always just given me this sure knowledge that
- 0:03Speaker 1: there is life after this, that there is purpose. Clearly,
- 0:09Speaker 1: he still remembered me as his grandson and had love
- 0:12Speaker 1: for me.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Welcome to Prioritize Your Life. And welcome to a really
- 0:23Speaker 2: weird moment for me. And me. Yeah, because the guy
- 0:27Speaker 2: that's sitting over here, It's somebody that I deeply respect
- 0:31Speaker 2: and deeply look up to. He's also one of my
- 0:34Speaker 2: best friends in the world. And here I am talking
- 0:37Speaker 2: with him on this thing.
- 0:39Speaker 1: And I am on the wrong side of the camera
- 0:41Speaker 1: right now. I am usually on the other side. And
- 0:46Speaker 1: so it's a little weird for me, too, because I
- 0:50Speaker 1: do video production and usually help Wes with some of his...
- 0:55Speaker 1: videos and filmmaking, but from the opposite side of the camera.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Yeah, that is very different.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Hey, how's it going? Good. I'm on this side of
- 1:04Speaker 1: the camera because I helped Wes shoot Scott Drummond's experience
- 1:11Speaker 1: and was in the room and just, I'll be honest
- 1:15Speaker 1: with you, when I was in the room, I was
- 1:18Speaker 1: really preoccupied and I kind of missed how special that
- 1:22Speaker 1: experience was. I had headphones on and I was like, oh,
- 1:24Speaker 1: there's a little hum in the headphones. I don't know.
- 1:26Speaker 1: And I was looking at camera angles and oh, this
- 1:29Speaker 1: is good. And I was so focused on the production
- 1:31Speaker 1: that I didn't really focus on what Scott was saying.
- 1:35Speaker 1: But after Wes finished the video and put it up,
- 1:38Speaker 1: I watched it and just thought, oh, that is a
- 1:40Speaker 1: really cool experience. And just felt how special that was
- 1:44Speaker 1: and how cool it was. And thought Scott is really
- 1:47Speaker 1: brave for sharing that with the world. And it's something
- 1:50Speaker 1: that the world needs right now. and I was touched
- 1:53Speaker 1: by it and thought that was so cool. But lately,
- 1:58Speaker 1: the video has really kind of been blowing up and
- 2:01Speaker 1: I've been watching that happen and I've been reading a
- 2:04Speaker 1: lot of the comments because, you know, like we said,
- 2:06Speaker 1: we're really good friends and so I'm always interested in
- 2:08Speaker 1: projects that Wes is doing and so it's been fun
- 2:12Speaker 1: to watch all of the attention that that video has gotten,
- 2:14Speaker 1: but even more fun to see how it's touched people's
- 2:16Speaker 1: lives and the difference that it's made, and how many
- 2:20Speaker 1: people have just said how much they needed to hear
- 2:22Speaker 1: that message and the comfort and peace that it's brought
- 2:26Speaker 1: to people. And maybe not everyone, but overwhelmingly, the reception
- 2:31Speaker 1: has been very positive. And so it's been really cool
- 2:33Speaker 1: to see. When it started getting really big, I said, Wes,
- 2:36Speaker 1: you got to get more stuff up on your channel,
- 2:38Speaker 1: like right away. And he said, yeah, I'm working on it.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I actually have a couple other people that I'm talking
- 2:47Speaker 1: to and I'm going to schedule and I want to
- 2:48Speaker 1: put more stuff out there. And then I thought about
- 2:51Speaker 1: it for a little bit and I realized that I
- 2:54Speaker 1: have an experience that might fit very well with the
- 2:57Speaker 1: message of prioritize your life. And I told him, I said, hey,
- 3:00Speaker 1: I can do a video if you want. And I
- 3:02Speaker 1: think he just kind of giggled and he thought that
- 3:04Speaker 1: I was joking because we joke a lot. And so
- 3:09Speaker 1: I had to say, this was actually happening over Slack.
- 3:11Speaker 1: We were chatting and I said, no, really. I have
- 3:16Speaker 1: an experience that I don't think I've shared with anybody
- 3:19Speaker 1: outside of my family. Very few people know about it.
- 3:23Speaker 1: It's a very special experience to me. And so even
- 3:26Speaker 1: someone who's as close a friend to me as Wes,
- 3:29Speaker 1: I had never shared it with him. But seeing how
- 3:32Speaker 1: much good the video has done, I actually realized that
- 3:35Speaker 1: maybe by not sharing, I was being a little bit selfish.
- 3:39Speaker 1: And I just thought, you know, if Scott can be
- 3:41Speaker 1: that brave and courageous, and share his experience and help
- 3:45Speaker 1: so many people. Maybe I should share my experience. And
- 3:49Speaker 1: I don't think mine is quite as dramatic as Scott's.
- 3:53Speaker 1: I didn't die and go to the other side, but
- 3:57Speaker 1: it was very special to me and has meant a
- 4:01Speaker 1: lot in my life and has been something I've been
- 4:04Speaker 1: able to draw on in hard times in my life.
- 4:08Speaker 1: And I'll admit there have been times when I maybe
- 4:11Speaker 1: forget and I don't live exactly the way that I
- 4:13Speaker 1: should for someone who's experienced something like that. But in
- 4:18Speaker 1: times when I do need a source of strength, I
- 4:22Speaker 1: often go back to this experience and draw strength from it.
- 4:25Speaker 1: And I guess I'm getting a little ahead of myself
- 4:28Speaker 1: because I haven't actually shared the experience. So I'll go
- 4:32Speaker 1: from there. After my freshman year of college, I... decided
- 4:39Speaker 1: to take a break from college and go and serve
- 4:47Speaker 1: as a missionary. And I went to Brazil and I
- 4:50Speaker 1: learned to speak Portuguese. While I was down there, I
- 4:55Speaker 1: was in the Sao Paulo area of Brazil and they
- 4:58Speaker 1: have a weather phenomenon that I haven't seen anywhere else
- 5:01Speaker 1: I've been. They call it Garoa. And what it is,
- 5:05Speaker 1: is a certain time of the year, they get these mists.
- 5:09Speaker 1: It's not quite rain, but it's not really fog. It's
- 5:14Speaker 1: just a really heavy mist. And you walk out the door,
- 5:18Speaker 1: and it doesn't matter if you're wearing an umbrella or what,
- 5:20Speaker 1: you're just instantly wet. It's just like the air is
- 5:22Speaker 1: full of water. And it usually happens when it's a
- 5:25Speaker 1: little bit colder. It doesn't ever get super duper cold
- 5:28Speaker 1: in Sao Paulo, but in the winter, it gets a
- 5:30Speaker 1: little colder and the humidity makes it feel even colder. Um,
- 5:34Speaker 1: but as, uh, as a younger, dumber person, maybe I
- 5:38Speaker 1: felt a little invincible. And so we would just go
- 5:41Speaker 1: out and work no matter what. And so even when
- 5:45Speaker 1: this God was out in the air, we would go
- 5:47Speaker 1: out and do our thing and, you know, go and
- 5:50Speaker 1: do service wherever we could help people, teach people about Jesus.
- 5:54Speaker 1: We're out doing our thing. And so, um, after, uh,
- 5:59Speaker 1: several days of being out in this mist and just
- 6:01Speaker 1: being wet and kind of cold all day, I got
- 6:05Speaker 1: really sick. And I had to stay home and I
- 6:10Speaker 1: was running a fever. I developed a really bad cough
- 6:12Speaker 1: and I just kept getting worse and worse. And so
- 6:15Speaker 1: finally I decided to go to a public health clinic.
- 6:20Speaker 1: They call it a posto de saúde in Brazil. And
- 6:26Speaker 1: it's not the greatest place to go when you're sick.
- 6:30Speaker 1: It's sort of like an Instacare, but it's free for everyone.
- 6:35Speaker 1: And so when I got there, there's just a ton
- 6:38Speaker 1: of people. I mean, it was the time of year
- 6:39Speaker 1: when everybody's sick anyway, because this got over and the
- 6:42Speaker 1: weather's kind of cold and humid. And it's where all
- 6:47Speaker 1: of the poorer people go when they have any health problems.
- 6:52Speaker 1: And so I went there and I just felt miserable
- 6:55Speaker 1: and the wait was forever. I was in this health
- 6:58Speaker 1: clinic for, it must have been six or seven hours
- 7:02Speaker 1: waiting to see a doctor and just, and I'm surrounded
- 7:05Speaker 1: by all these people who are coughing and sound terrible
- 7:08Speaker 1: and sometimes people come in bleeding and even they were waiting.
- 7:11Speaker 1: I'm like, oh man, if that guy with the bloody
- 7:13Speaker 1: arm has to wait two hours, I'm gonna never get
- 7:16Speaker 1: to see the doctor. Anyway, finally, after all this waiting,
- 7:19Speaker 1: I go in to see a doctor and I start
- 7:21Speaker 1: to tell him what's wrong And really, before I can
- 7:25Speaker 1: even finish explaining all of my symptoms, he says, yep,
- 7:29Speaker 1: sounds like you've got the flu. And he writes out
- 7:32Speaker 1: a prescription. He says, here's this prescription. You can go
- 7:35Speaker 1: over to this part of the building and wait in
- 7:36Speaker 1: line and they'll fill your prescription. And I was like,
- 7:40Speaker 1: that's it? Like, I didn't even finish. Like, you didn't,
- 7:42Speaker 1: I'm used to, you know, going to the hospital or
- 7:46Speaker 1: the doctor here in the U.S. and you know, no
- 7:48Speaker 1: matter what you're there for, you could be there for
- 7:50Speaker 1: a checkup and they're still going to like take your vitals.
- 7:53Speaker 1: They're going to listen to your heart. They're going to
- 7:55Speaker 1: probably shine a light in your eyes and in your ear.
- 7:57Speaker 1: And this guy, you know, before I even, yeah, you
- 8:01Speaker 1: got the flu. Here's your prescription. And I was just like, oh, wow.
- 8:05Speaker 1: And so I went to the line that everybody was
- 8:09Speaker 1: waiting to fill their prescriptions. And this was a long
- 8:11Speaker 1: line too. And I just, I felt terrible. I was like,
- 8:15Speaker 1: I don't even, you know, I'd fallen asleep several times
- 8:17Speaker 1: in the waiting room just was running a fever, felt awful.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I was like, I do not want to wait in
- 8:22Speaker 1: this line. And I look at the prescription and I
- 8:25Speaker 1: spoke Portuguese, but when it came to prescriptions, I didn't
- 8:28Speaker 1: really know what things were. And so I was trying
- 8:30Speaker 1: to figure out like what it was that he had
- 8:32Speaker 1: prescribed me. And I started asking other people online and
- 8:35Speaker 1: I was like, hey, what is this? And they were
- 8:39Speaker 1: trying to explain to me in Portuguese what it was.
- 8:42Speaker 1: And they're like, yeah, it's the same prescription that I got.
- 8:44Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, really? And what do you have?
- 8:47Speaker 1: And anyway... Come to find out, I started going up
- 8:49Speaker 1: and down the line. Everybody had the same prescription. And
- 8:53Speaker 1: basically after talking to a bunch of people, I figured
- 8:55Speaker 1: out it was just a prescription for like an acetaminophen injection.
- 8:58Speaker 1: It was just like a really strong dose of Tylenol
- 9:02Speaker 1: was what everybody was getting. Like everybody in the line
- 9:05Speaker 1: was just waiting to go get their Tylenol shot. And
- 9:07Speaker 1: so I was like, you know what? I'm not waiting
- 9:09Speaker 1: in this line.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Six hours for that?
- 9:12Speaker 1: I waited for six hours for that. And I was like, yeah,
- 9:15Speaker 1: I'm not waiting in this line. So I left and
- 9:17Speaker 1: I went home. Maybe I think I stopped at the
- 9:20Speaker 1: pharmacy and bought some Tylenol and took some Tylenol. And
- 9:24Speaker 1: a couple of days later, I just was still miserable.
- 9:27Speaker 1: I felt awful. Cough had not gotten where I was
- 9:30Speaker 1: having a hard time breathing. And so I finally went
- 9:32Speaker 1: to a private doctor, got me in right away. And
- 9:37Speaker 1: I started telling him and he got out a stethoscope
- 9:39Speaker 1: and started listening to my breathing. And he said, oh,
- 9:41Speaker 1: that does not sound good. And he ordered some x-rays
- 9:44Speaker 1: and got me into He had in his office an
- 9:48Speaker 1: x-ray machine and got me back and got the x-rays
- 9:51Speaker 1: and looked at it and he says, oh yeah, you
- 9:53Speaker 1: have pneumonia in both lungs. And so he got me
- 9:57Speaker 1: some actual good prescriptions and things like that. and, and
- 10:00Speaker 1: sent me home. I still was just miserable. And I remember, um,
- 10:04Speaker 1: at one point, um, I was running a really high fever.
- 10:07Speaker 1: That's one of the things he told me. He said,
- 10:08Speaker 1: I want you to take your temperature really regularly. And
- 10:11Speaker 1: if you get up above, um, this number, um, you
- 10:14Speaker 1: need to call me and we might need to get
- 10:15Speaker 1: you into the hospital. So you got to take your temperature, um,
- 10:18Speaker 1: you know, every hour. And I need to back up
- 10:21Speaker 1: a little bit. I forgot. It's been so long. I'm
- 10:23Speaker 1: telling the story slightly out of order and I didn't
- 10:25Speaker 1: really think to rehearse this. A couple of weeks before
- 10:28Speaker 1: all of this had happened, I actually got a message
- 10:32Speaker 1: that I needed to call home. And I called home
- 10:34Speaker 1: and I talked to my parents and I found out
- 10:36Speaker 1: that my grandfather had just passed away. And it was sad,
- 10:41Speaker 1: but he was old and had lived a good life.
- 10:43Speaker 1: And so I kind of grieved and mourned for my
- 10:46Speaker 1: grandfather in my own way. Anyway, I found myself with
- 10:51Speaker 1: this pneumonia in the middle of these high fevers. And
- 10:54Speaker 1: I don't know if I was delirious, if I was
- 10:58Speaker 1: asleep and dreaming. I'm not really sure. I can't say.
- 11:03Speaker 1: But at some point, my grandfather showed up dressed all
- 11:09Speaker 1: in white and came to me and he put his
- 11:15Speaker 1: hands on me. And he said a prayer over me
- 11:19Speaker 1: and blessed me that I would feel better, that I
- 11:25Speaker 1: would heal and get better. And he told me that
- 11:30Speaker 1: he was okay and that everything was all right. Sorry,
- 11:36Speaker 1: like I said, I've never told this story to very
- 11:39Speaker 1: many people, so I still get emotional. And then he left.
- 11:48Speaker 1: And within a few hours of that, I came out
- 11:51Speaker 1: of the fever and finally started feeling better. And it
- 11:54Speaker 1: still took me a couple days, but that was the
- 11:56Speaker 1: beginning of my recovery. And that was when I stopped
- 11:59Speaker 1: feeling so miserable, was within a few hours of this
- 12:06Speaker 1: special visit from my grandfather. And whether that visit happened
- 12:11Speaker 1: in a dream or whether he really came to me
- 12:14Speaker 1: and I was just a little delirious and so My
- 12:17Speaker 1: memory is messed up. I don't know. And it doesn't
- 12:22Speaker 1: matter to me because either he came to me in
- 12:24Speaker 1: a dream and told me that everything was okay or
- 12:26Speaker 1: he really came to me and ministered to me as
- 12:30Speaker 1: an angel from the other side. And I just remember
- 12:35Speaker 1: feeling this overwhelming warmth. And I know that That he
- 12:47Speaker 1: is still out there. That even though he passed from
- 12:51Speaker 1: this world, he goes on and still exists. And not
- 12:59Speaker 1: just him, but everyone. And it's always just given me
- 13:03Speaker 1: this sure knowledge that there is life after this. That
- 13:08Speaker 1: there is purpose. Clearly, he still remembered me as his
- 13:12Speaker 1: grandson and had love for me. And so I know
- 13:15Speaker 1: that there are still some sort of relationships that exist
- 13:18Speaker 1: past this life. And so when things get a little tough,
- 13:26Speaker 1: when life feels a little crazy, when I feel stressed
- 13:29Speaker 1: and overwhelmed, I remember that there's more than just this.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Not to say that this life isn't important, but I
- 13:37Speaker 1: know that we have a higher purpose. And when I
- 13:39Speaker 1: think about prioritizing my life, I try to remember that
- 13:45Speaker 1: experience that has always been a strength to me and
- 13:49Speaker 1: my faith. And I just thought, you know, if Scott
- 13:53Speaker 1: can be brave enough to share something that's helped him,
- 13:57Speaker 1: that I could maybe share this experience that's helped me
- 14:03Speaker 1: and hopefully it can help others. Anyway, that's it, man.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I got better and I was able to finish out
- 14:12Speaker 1: my mission and it was an amazing experience all around,
- 14:15Speaker 1: but that was one that I hold dear and it
- 14:18Speaker 1: really has changed my life and been a source of
- 14:22Speaker 1: strength and peace to me. Thank you, man.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Man, when you said it just brought you this warmth,
- 14:28Speaker 2: I felt that in that instant and I was having
- 14:31Speaker 2: to try really hard not to start crying myself.
- 14:33Speaker 1: It's interesting.
- 14:34Speaker 2: It's nowhere near as special. I actually had a very
- 14:38Speaker 2: similar experience. My grandmother passed away. I, one night after
- 14:42Speaker 2: she had passed away, I was pretty bummed. I loved
- 14:44Speaker 2: her and she was a beautiful, beautiful woman, is a
- 14:46Speaker 2: beautiful woman. I had a dream that I was in
- 14:49Speaker 2: the spot that was so familiar to me, which is
- 14:52Speaker 2: riding in the back of their Buick. And my grandpa
- 14:54Speaker 2: was driving and my grandma was in the front seat
- 14:57Speaker 2: and I was sitting in the back, um, just like
- 14:59Speaker 2: it always used to be as I was growing up
- 15:01Speaker 2: when I would visit them in Colorado, listening to classical music.
- 15:04Speaker 2: We're probably on our way to King Soopers where they're
- 15:06Speaker 2: going to buy me a cookie. Um, But this time
- 15:09Speaker 2: it was clearly a dream and my grandma turned around
- 15:11Speaker 2: to me and she looked at me and she lovingly
- 15:14Speaker 2: smiled and she said, I've been trying to talk to
- 15:17Speaker 2: you but you can't hear me. And then she just
- 15:20Speaker 2: smiled and turned away and that was the whole dream.
- 15:23Speaker 2: But a similar thing in that way is just like
- 15:26Speaker 2: it was a huge blessing and it was like I
- 15:29Speaker 2: was being told that like she's okay, she knows what
- 15:32Speaker 2: you're doing, she loves you, she still exists and it
- 15:34Speaker 2: was a beautiful, beautiful experience. Anyway, thanks, dude.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Yeah. It was good. Also, why do all grandparents have
- 15:42Speaker 1: to drive Buicks? When you're like, I was in the
- 15:44Speaker 1: back of their Buick, I'm like, hey, I have memories
- 15:45Speaker 1: of being in the back of my grandparents' Buick.
- 15:48Speaker 2: There's your assignment in the comments. Did you drive in
- 15:50Speaker 2: a Buick with your grandparents? And if you had any
- 15:53Speaker 2: dreams about them.
- 15:54Speaker 1: We'll take those, too. Cool. Thanks, man. That's a pretty
- 15:58Speaker 1: cool experience.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Yours. Thanks.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Good luck editing this one. Yeah. Thank you.
