- 0:00Jill: women excel at giving.
- 0:01We're raised to give and naturally look for ways to help others.
- 0:05So how can you use this talent to your advantage in your career?
- 0:09Networking doesn't have to be a dirty word.
- 0:11You can learn to love spending time building your network if
- 0:14you just have the right mindset.
- 0:16So after building my own network as a giver, I'm going to share
- 0:19with you some of the best tips for how I've created a reputation.
- 0:22as someone people can count on and who they turn to when they need an expert.
- 0:26I was recently consulted by a doctoral student when analyzing her data.
- 0:31I was quoted in Fast Company Magazine and I've been invited as a podcast
- 0:35guest and to collaborate with other social media influencers as a result
- 0:39of the reputation that I've built.
- 0:41In this episode, we are going to explore a whole new way to
- 0:44look at creating your network.
- 0:46By building relationships that matter with people that you enjoy spending time with.
- 0:50So stick around because relationships are important to leaders and they are
- 0:54more important the higher you rise.
- 0:56So if you have room for improvement in your networking strategy, even if
- 1:00you've been resisting the whole idea of networking, this episode's for you.
- 1:04Jill Avey: I'm Jill Avey, a career success coach, and this is Sister
- 1:07Smart Leadership, the show that explores how women can rise from
- 1:11director to vice president and beyond by fully leaning into their feminine
- 1:16energy as their biggest advantage.
- 1:18Let's get you one step closer to the recognition and promotion you deserve.
- 1:23Jill: See, the problem I see most often with mid career women is that women have
- 1:28this allergic reaction to networking.
- 1:30They don't want to feel cheesy, sleazy, or like they're only out for themselves.
- 1:34They've seen others doing this and they don't want to
- 1:36be perceived in the same way.
- 1:38But the problem with this is it holds them back in their careers.
- 1:41I have two books for you to read on this topic.
- 1:43Give and Take by Adam Grant.
- 1:45and the Art of Gathering by Priya Parker.
- 1:48In the Sister Smart Leadership Program, we go in depth into the framework by
- 1:51Adam Grant in his book, Give and Take.
- 1:53So I'll give you an overview here.
- 1:55Givers are, as you can imagine, the people who give in their network
- 1:58and they find ways to help others and they are constantly looking
- 2:02for what they can do for others.
- 2:04The problem with givers is that sometimes we overgive or we get taken by takers.
- 2:10And so we want to be watching out for takers.
- 2:13So what are takers?
- 2:14Takers are people who are just looking out for themselves and they just want to
- 2:18get what they can from you and they're not going to give you anything back.
- 2:22And then we have also what's called matchers.
- 2:24And this is people who only give as much as they get.
- 2:28And they're constantly kind of doing the calculation.
- 2:30And this isn't actually the place that we want to be.
- 2:32Where we want to be is really giving freely and knowing that if when we put
- 2:37it out there that it's going to come back to us in some form, but it doesn't have
- 2:40to come back to us from that same person.
- 2:43And so we can just give freely, not over giving, but giving enough that we know
- 2:48that it's going to be a virtuous cycle.
- 2:50So think about what can we give?
- 2:52Some people feel like they have nothing to offer, and this really
- 2:55stops them from wanting to, kind of engage in this style of networking.
- 3:00But we all have expertise that others need.
- 3:02So think about that doctoral student.
- 3:05She knew that I love research.
- 3:07Is there something that you're really known for in your field?
- 3:10I'm known for being an expert on women's leadership.
- 3:12So when people want to talk about what the latest research is or check about their
- 3:17research, they're going to come to me and ask me about what my opinion is on it.
- 3:22But we all have expertise that other people need.
- 3:25Maybe you know a lot about a certain topic and you've read all the research on it.
- 3:31You can be that go to expert for that topic.
- 3:34Maybe you like writing and you can be somebody that people come to for quotes.
- 3:38Maybe you are an expert at social media and that is something that
- 3:42you can use to engage with others and develop a giving network.
- 3:46Perhaps you like to speak and you can be somebody that people can draw on for that.
- 3:51Are you a connector and you love putting people together?
- 3:54That can be a great service for others.
- 3:56Perhaps you love entertaining and you're somebody that is great at gathering
- 4:00people together or putting on an event.
- 4:03Maybe you like to organize things and you're one to make sure that, everything
- 4:09is put together and running orderly.
- 4:12This can be a great for events and when you're gathering people together as well.
- 4:15What do you geek out on that other people find mystifying?
- 4:19That's a great place to start.
- 4:21Next, think about how you can collaborate with people.
- 4:24I find this is the powerhouse of a giving network, is when you can
- 4:27start collaborating with others.
- 4:30So perhaps you start a podcast.
- 4:32I have clients that have started their own podcast about their topic where
- 4:36their expertise is and they can draw in people where they're interviewing
- 4:40industry experts and you get to know all kinds of people that way.
- 4:43You're showcasing your talents and you're showcasing their
- 4:46talents all at the same time.
- 4:47As well, you can collaborate on writing a book.
- 4:50There are a lot of books that are written as short stories or as stories that are,
- 4:55examples of different people's expertise.
- 4:58Blogs and articles can be collaborative as well.
- 5:01I've been quoted in collaborative articles as well as blog posts.
- 5:05and also collaborative LinkedIn posts.
- 5:08So I've also been a participant in several collaborative LinkedIn posts
- 5:12where one creator will bring together a bunch of people to create a post.
- 5:16And that's really fun to do.
- 5:18You really get to know people in a better way.
- 5:20So in our program, we have a four part training on how to create a social
- 5:24media presence as a professional.
- 5:26And this can be a powerhouse Hub for how you can collaborate with others.
- 5:31You can get invited to speak at industry events this way because you get your
- 5:34expertise known in a broader scale with people you might not even have known
- 5:39were putting on an event and now they know you because of your efforts in
- 5:43social media, you can get quoted in articles that people are writing because
- 5:47they've learned about you the same way.
- 5:49And it also helps you with visibility in your own company for your expertise.
- 5:53especially helpful when you have your next job search or being found by recruiters.
- 5:59So it's really important to invest some time into becoming one of
- 6:04the known experts on LinkedIn.
- 6:05What if you don't know how to write?
- 6:07A lot of people will hold themselves back from doing these kinds of
- 6:09things because they don't feel like they know how to write good enough.
- 6:12but there are plenty of coaching programs or you can hire a writing coach.
- 6:15If you want to write a book, there's a lot of coaches that can help you do that.
- 6:19And then there's programs that can help you learn how to blog or write social
- 6:22media posts, and that will fast track you to get there quickly and easily.
- 6:26So don't let that hold you back.
- 6:28Now, another way to think about it is that you could be a person who gathers people.
- 6:33So think about how could you gather three to 10 people together that are
- 6:38experts in your industry or that are peers that you may want to get to know.
- 6:43Again, I want you to draw on The Art of Gathering by Priya Parker for this.
- 6:47She is an expert and she will inspire you to put together some kind of
- 6:51gathering if you read her book.
- 6:53And think about places that you can bring people together.
- 6:56So an industry conference is a great place because you're all together in one area
- 7:01and you could bring everybody together for a lunch or a coffee or a dinner.
- 7:06Breakfast is another good thing for conferences and you
- 7:10can just take advantage of everybody being in the same city
- 7:13as well.
- 7:14Think about your own city and you could bring people together in your area
- 7:18for a dinner or same thing, breakfast or lunch or that kind of thing.
- 7:23Or when you travel to another city, that would be a great time to meet
- 7:26people in that particular place.
- 7:27What if you like a lot of my clients are in pharmaceuticals
- 7:31and there's a hub in New Jersey.
- 7:33So maybe you're traveling to that area for a specific event.
- 7:36You could pull together your colleagues in that area.
- 7:39And when you do pull everybody together a meal is a great way
- 7:43food or drinks is always a great way to bring people together.
- 7:46But you could also think of doing a fun sport or an activity or even
- 7:50hosting a dinner at your own home.
- 7:52These are all ideas about how you can bring people together and
- 7:55where you can bring them together.
- 7:57I've had several clients who have gotten to know industry leaders
- 8:00by being on the board of their industry association as well.
- 8:04So particularly if there's a women's group, this be really helpful
- 8:07because often women are supporting women, but don't rule it out if
- 8:10there's no women's group, because men are big supporters of women.
- 8:13So either way, this is a good way to go.
- 8:16if you have time for this kind of involvement, this can be a more time
- 8:20consuming, ongoing time commitment that you need to be prepared for.
- 8:24The benefit of it is that you expose yourself to people from a lot of
- 8:28different companies in your field and this can be great for networking.
- 8:31Particularly if you might be looking for a new job in the next year or two.
- 8:34But be careful to think about who you're actually meeting when
- 8:38you volunteer for the board.
- 8:39I recommend going for like a membership role.
- 8:42or being a person who looks for speakers at events or something like that, where
- 8:46you're reaching out to others and you're getting to know a lot of people versus
- 8:49working on something on the back end.
- 8:51I found this out the hard way myself because, I tended to be the communications
- 8:55person who would be sending out the emails and things like that.
- 8:58when I was volunteering, but that was a back end role and I wasn't
- 9:02meeting a lot of people that way.
- 9:03And it was much more beneficial for me when I switched to being like
- 9:06the membership person and I got to meet everybody new coming in and
- 9:10also working with the other board members kind of in a more direct way.
- 9:14Another great role that I did was to be the person who was creating the
- 9:17newsletter, because that helped me to be able to reach out to specific
- 9:21people that I wanted to meet because I could interview them for the
- 9:24newsletter and write something up.
- 9:26So how to gather these people together.
- 9:30Like who?
- 9:30Who are the people that you really want to be in your gathering?
- 9:34So think about non-competitive people who are in the same industry.
- 9:39and people that, would you like to have a drink with them?
- 9:42Are they people that you want to meet?
- 9:44An example of this is that I regularly meet with other coaches and we
- 9:48pull together groups and we can talk about social media outreach.
- 9:52We can talk about business systems.
- 9:54We can talk about workplace trends for women, coaching tools and modalities.
- 9:58things like that.
- 10:00And we're here to help.
- 10:01And we approach it from an abundance mindset.
- 10:03So we're not worried about giving you each other, secrets or things like that.
- 10:07Of course, we're not going to talk about our trade secrets and, when, you're
- 10:10not going to talk about the things that really make your company Stand
- 10:13out and give you your competitive edge, but there are so many other things,
- 10:17the other 90 percent of what you do can be things that you can talk about.
- 10:21And so, you're just thinking through how you talk about those things and what
- 10:26you're talking about and what are those peripheral things that you can think of.
- 10:29So think about these common things that you face in your business.
- 10:34When I was in marketing, I met with other marketers who sold different
- 10:38products and we were all facing the same industry trends and we were
- 10:42trying to reach the same customers.
- 10:44So, we had the same issues here and it really helped each other to be
- 10:48talking about the industry trends and what we're seeing and, And being able
- 10:52to discuss what does that mean to us?
- 10:54And what does that mean for our future?
- 10:56This often resulted in collaborations.
- 10:58And one of the best ones that I did was this event series where I brought
- 11:01people together from other companies and I brought in their product that
- 11:05they were wanting to promote and really push for that next season.
- 11:09And it helped me build relationships with all those other marketing
- 11:12directors and really got my name out there in the business.
- 11:14So In fact, that was how Timberland knew of my work before I interviewed with them.
- 11:19And they knew that they wanted me to do the same things for them as I did
- 11:23for my brand, beyond that event, even.
- 11:26So some things that you could talk about are industry trends, as I mentioned.
- 11:31Upcoming challenges.
- 11:32What are the forces that are affecting your customers?
- 11:34For example, you don't have to divulge company secrets, as I mentioned, but what
- 11:38are you doing to solve different problems?
- 11:41What are the software tools that you're using and how are you using them?
- 11:44And of course you can talk about leadership, the personal
- 11:47side of the business and how are we leading in our roles.
- 11:51is something that you could always talk about.
- 11:54And it really helps you develop those personal relationships when
- 11:57you start to get real about, how you're operating in, like how you're
- 12:02being rather than what you're doing.
- 12:04So think about what you might be able to talk about with a group
- 12:07of people in your community.
- 12:09So at the end of each episode, I like to give you three shifts that
- 12:12you can make today to get started on what we've just talked about.
- 12:16So first think about what does giving mean to you?
- 12:20What are some things that you could give?
- 12:22And the second shift today is to identify one way that you could collaborate
- 12:26with someone in your industry.
- 12:28Is it through a dinner?
- 12:29Do you like to write?
- 12:30Your industry association?
- 12:32What's an entry point that you could make and make networking
- 12:36a giving thing for you?
- 12:38And third, identify one person that you could collaborate with.
- 12:42Who is someone that you would like to stay in touch with, but
- 12:44haven't had a good reason to do so?
- 12:46So what's one thing new that you learned in this episode?
- 12:49I'd love to hear where you would like to start giving.
