Latest / The Rand Report: Sports / Kirby Smart and the Standard That Still Matters

- 0:04Kirby Smart does not want to talk about the chaos.
- 0:08He wants to talk about football. This is The
- 0:11Rand Report. I'm Jim Rand. One program, one coach,
- 0:15and a clear message as fall camp opens in Athens.
- 0:19Kirby Smart is in his 11th season at Georgia.
- 0:23He is now the longest tenured head coach in the
- 0:25SEC, the Dean, the Standard. At media days and
- 0:29again as camp began, his message was consistent
- 0:32and sharp. Stop talking about expansion, stop
- 0:35talking about the portal, stop talking about
- 0:37NIL legislation and federal rules and every new
- 0:40layer of noise that surrounds the sport. What
- 0:43we focus on in Georgia is what wins football
- 0:46games. That is the line, not the soft version,
- 0:49not the carefully managed public relations version,
- 0:52the actual standard. College football is full
- 0:54of coaches and programs that spend more energy
- 0:57managing the noise than competing through it.
- 0:59SMART has made a career of the opposite approach.
- 1:02Control what you can control. Recruit and develop
- 1:05players who buy into toughness and football intelligence.
- 1:09Then go win. The roster realities heading into
- 1:12this camp make the message more important, not
- 1:15less. The wide receiver room was heavily depleted.
- 1:19Most of last year's top production is gone. Georgia
- 1:21is looking for more explosiveness on offense.
- 1:24The pass rush was a clear weakness a year ago.
- 1:27Fewest sacks in 10 seasons under SMART. Those
- 1:30are real questions that will be answered in the
- 1:33next two weeks of competitive practices. Gunnar
- 1:37Stockton is back at quarterback with more experience
- 1:39and a dual threat element that already produced
- 1:41strong numbers last season The offensive line
- 1:44has talent and some youth including the possibility
- 1:47of a true freshman starter The defense still
- 1:50has the pieces to be physical and disruptive
- 1:52But none of that matters if the culture softens
- 1:55under the weight of the modern sports distractions
- 1:57Smart keeps returning to the same themes football
- 2:01intelligence toughness on the perimeter players
- 2:04who understand that their physical advantages
- 2:06only matter if they are used with intent and
- 2:09urgency. Fall Camp Under Smart has always been
- 2:12the place where the soft edges get removed. The
- 2:15heat, the repetition, the direct competition
- 2:17for every rep, players who arrive thinking the
- 2:20name on the helmet is enough usually discover
- 2:22the truth quickly. The ones who buy into the
- 2:25standard early tend to become the players who
- 2:28decide games in November and December. That process
- 2:31is underway again in Athens right now. The next
- 2:34two weeks will separate the roster into the group
- 2:37that still competes at the required level and
- 2:39in the group that is still negotiating with the
- 2:41requirements. Camp is the first real filter.
- 2:45The locked in days away from normal life, the
- 2:47evaluation under fatigue, heat and direct competition.
- 2:52The difference between Georgia and most of the
- 2:54programs chasing them is not talent. Talent is
- 2:57available everywhere in the portal era. The difference
- 3:00is the daily standard that refuses to negotiate
- 3:03with fatigue, distraction or external noise.
- 3:06Smart has been clear about what he is asking
- 3:09from this roster in camp, addition by subtraction.
- 3:13Players who remove the soft habits and replace
- 3:15them with urgency. That message only works if
- 3:18it is enforced when the pads come on and the
- 3:20competition rises. This is the part that separates
- 3:23Georgia from programs that talk a better game
- 3:26than they play. The standard does not care about
- 3:29the portal cycle. It does not care about the
- 3:31latest rule change or the latest wave of speculation.
- 3:35It cares about who shows up every day ready to
- 3:37compete when the easy excuses are available.
- 3:41There is pressure here that the soft narratives
- 3:43like to ignore Georgia has been the SEC's best
- 3:47program for years back -to -back conference titles
- 3:50Consistent excellence under smart, but the recent
- 3:53playoff exits create a different kind of expectation
- 3:56Winning the league is no longer enough for the
- 3:58people who measure the program by national championships
- 4:01smart understands that he also understands that
- 4:05chasing the noise never produces the result The
- 4:08soft language around college football has never
- 4:11been louder. Every roster hole has an external
- 4:14explanation. Every slow start has a portal or
- 4:17NIL or legislative reason. SMART has built a
- 4:20program that treats those explanations as irrelevant.
- 4:24That approach is not always popular. It is not
- 4:27always comfortable, but it is the reason Georgia
- 4:29remains the program everyone else is still measured
- 4:32against. The next two weeks of camp will not
- 4:35decide the national championship. They will decide
- 4:38whether this particular roster is still willing
- 4:40to live by the standard that produced the previous
- 4:42ones. The coaches who spend August managing public
- 4:46perception usually spend December explaining
- 4:48why the season fell short. The ones who spend
- 4:51August enforcing the standard Give themselves
- 4:54a chance when the lights get brightest. Georgia's
- 4:57recent history shows both sides of this equation.
- 5:00When the standard is enforced without apology,
- 5:03the program produces the results that make everyone
- 5:06else react. When any part of the roster is allowed
- 5:09to negotiate with that standard, the margin for
- 5:11error disappears quickly in a loaded conference
- 5:14and a expanded playoff. Smart is not confused
- 5:18about which version he is trying to build this
- 5:20August. The practices will show whether the roster
- 5:23is equally clear. That is the real story in Athens
- 5:26right now. Not the latest transfer rumor. Not
- 5:29the latest piece of legislation. There is a reason
- 5:32Georgia has remained the measuring stick in the
- 5:34SEC even after the sport changed around it. The
- 5:38program did not become the standard by managing
- 5:40the narrative better than everyone else. It became
- 5:43the standard by demanding more from its players
- 5:45when the the easy path was available. That demand
- 5:49is being tested again right now. The wide receiver
- 5:52questions are real. The pass rush questions are
- 5:55real. The pressure after consecutive playoff
- 5:57exits is real. None of those things change the
- 6:00standard. They only reveal who is still willing
- 6:03to live by it. Whether the culture that made
- 6:06Georgia the standard still holds when the roster
- 6:08has holes and the outside noise is louder than
- 6:11ever. The modern college football landscape rewards
- 6:15the soft conversation. It rewards the programs
- 6:18that can explain away a lack of physicality or
- 6:20a lack of urgency with the latest external factor.
- 6:24SMART has built his program by rejecting that
- 6:26approach. Fall Camp is where that rejection gets
- 6:29tested every single day. Players are evaluated
- 6:32under fatigue, position battles become real,
- 6:35the difference between talking about toughness
- 6:37and actually living it becomes obvious. Georgia's
- 6:41history under SMART shows what happens when the
- 6:43standard is enforced consistently. It also shows
- 6:46what happens when the outside noise is allowed
- 6:49to become the story. The next two weeks will
- 6:51reveal which version of the program shows up
- 6:54in 2026. Here's the bottom line. Kirby SMART
- 6:58is still coaching the same way. Focus on what
- 7:00wins. Reject the soft language that surrounds
- 7:03the sport. Demand toughness and football intelligence
- 7:06every day in camp. The wide receiver room needs
- 7:10answers. The pass rush needs to improve. The
- 7:13next two weeks will show whether the standard
- 7:15is still the difference or whether the chaos
- 7:17of the modern game is starting to win. Watch
- 7:20the practices in Athens. Watch who separates
- 7:23when the competition is highest. Watch whether
- 7:25the program that has set the bar for years is
- 7:28still willing to live by it when the easy explanations
- 7:31are available. That is the test. Not the press
- 7:34conferences. Not the narratives. The daily decision
- 7:37to compete at the level the standard requires.
- 7:40That is the only measurement that matters in
- 7:42Athens this month. Not the pre -season rankings.
- 7:45Not the external noise. Whether the daily standard
- 7:48is still non -negotiable. This has been The Rand
- 7:52Report. I'm Jim Rand. Less hype. More truth.
- 7:56Until next time. Keep competing.
