Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: You're listening to the Armchair GM Sports Network and welcome
- 0:34Speaker 1: into another episode of Sabersmantics Live. Following Game seven of
- 0:38Speaker 1: the Stanley Cup second round matchup between the Montreal Canadians
- 0:41Speaker 1: and the Buffalo Sabers, Montreal taking it three to two
- 0:45Speaker 1: in overtime, advancing to the Eastern Conference Final to face
- 0:48Speaker 1: the Carolina Hurricanes right here on the Armchair GM Sports Network.
- 0:52Speaker 1: As always, Saberspantics has probably reach about global pet foods
- 0:55Speaker 1: or pets are unknapally part of the family and their
- 0:57Speaker 1: three great Niagara Regian locations in Niagara Falls, Fawn Hill
- 0:59Speaker 1: and Scott Street in St. Catharines, Brandon Putto and Austin
- 1:02Speaker 1: broad of Lee Prospects with you still de escalating a
- 1:05Speaker 1: little bit from what was, you know, very intense tense
- 1:08Speaker 1: game overtime just ended about ten minutes ago. Montreal moving on.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Alex Newhook gets the overtime winner. Buffalo battles back from
- 1:16Speaker 1: being down to nothing and controlled most of this game,
- 1:20Speaker 1: you know, for a team that's went through a fourteen
- 1:23Speaker 1: season playoff drought. Austin winning the Atlantic Division, getting to
- 1:27Speaker 1: Game seven of the second round with a chance to
- 1:29Speaker 1: be in the Eastern Conference Final. Very disappointing right now,
- 1:32Speaker 1: but really proud of what this group accomplished.
- 1:35Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Just to say that it's already over is kind of tough.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I'm not I'm gonna yeah, I mean
- 1:43Speaker 3: we could talk about the other stuff later. Obviously not
- 1:46Speaker 3: gonna crap on the entire season, but just probably not
- 1:49Speaker 3: the the sentiment that I'm going to go with tonight,
- 1:53Speaker 3: just because there's lots of time for that.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Yeah. So again, appreciate everybody tuning in live on the
- 1:59Speaker 1: YouTube version, and thank you for those listening the next
- 2:01Speaker 1: day in your favorite on demand audio podcast platform. I
- 2:03Speaker 1: wish I was you guys tuning in tomorrow morning. But
- 2:07Speaker 1: we'll quickly go over the game stats of scoring summary,
- 2:09Speaker 1: we'll hear from Lindy Ruff briefly tonight. We're it's not
- 2:11Speaker 1: gonna be an extended postgame episode for you guys that
- 2:14Speaker 1: we would usually do. Austin and myself just we're gonna
- 2:18Speaker 1: keep it short and sweet tonight, so we'll get through
- 2:20Speaker 1: it as quick as possible. But appreciate everybody tuning in nonetheless,
- 2:23Speaker 1: and we'll do a full offseason preview down the road.
- 2:26Speaker 1: But again, to say this this season is already in
- 2:28Speaker 1: past tense. Is really tough with you know, the way
- 2:31Speaker 1: that you know the series looked at one point in
- 2:33Speaker 1: favor of the Savers. So no lineup changes Austin for
- 2:38Speaker 1: tonight in the game obviously, other than lucan In who
- 2:40Speaker 1: basically played the entire game in that anyway, for when
- 2:44Speaker 1: he came in and relief a line in game six
- 2:46Speaker 1: after giving him three and four. You know, what did
- 2:49Speaker 1: you think, was there anything that you would have wanted
- 2:51Speaker 1: to see different? You thought they were just going to
- 2:53Speaker 1: run it back with the same thing that we saw
- 2:54Speaker 1: in six to get them here.
- 2:56Speaker 3: No, it's similar to when UPL started game five, right,
- 3:00Speaker 3: played well in relief the game before. No, he won
- 3:04Speaker 3: the game before captain net. He played well in relief
- 3:07Speaker 3: game six, kept the net Like it makes sense. We
- 3:10Speaker 3: know Lindy's m O is not really to change much
- 3:12Speaker 3: when it's going well, and that's kind of the guns
- 3:14Speaker 3: that he's stuck to. And the lineup again like was fine.
- 3:18Speaker 3: The Sabers is the last two game at five on
- 3:19Speaker 3: five were the much better team, and I mean as
- 3:24Speaker 3: evidenced by the score of the last two games. But
- 3:28Speaker 3: I mean, unfortunately when it comes down to it. Lineup changes,
- 3:32Speaker 3: how well you're playing at five on five and all
- 3:34Speaker 3: that stuff doesn't mean anything. You just have to find
- 3:35Speaker 3: a way to get it done. And at the end
- 3:37Speaker 3: of the day, new Hook found a chance and converted
- 3:41Speaker 3: on it, whereas the Sabers could not convert on their
- 3:43Speaker 3: chances in overtime because they had number of chances to
- 3:45Speaker 3: win that game.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Yep, new Hook with that was now his seventh goal
- 3:50Speaker 1: of the playoffs. And what a playoff performer he's been
- 3:53Speaker 1: for the Montreal Canadians. Again, the road team once again
- 3:58Speaker 1: gets the victory here and the Canadians respond after the
- 4:02Speaker 1: loss again, just like they've done in the Tampa Bay
- 4:05Speaker 1: series and now in the Buffalo series. Just what a
- 4:07Speaker 1: back and forth series. And who would have thought that?
- 4:09Speaker 1: You know, the road team, what did they? They win
- 4:12Speaker 1: six of the seven games in the series.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Uh No, each team had one game okay Buffalo, Yeah,
- 4:17Speaker 3: Buffalo one game one, Montreal one game three.
- 4:20Speaker 1: So Buffalo their game seven record now falls to one
- 4:24Speaker 1: and seven all time. Let's let's quickly go over the
- 4:28Speaker 1: games test tonight brought to you by Janel Flooring. If
- 4:30Speaker 1: you things a better deal in any roughs, you don't know, Jack,
- 4:31Speaker 1: check them out at jannel flooring dot com, visit or
- 4:33Speaker 1: nagra Fall's location to begin your quality flooring project today.
- 4:37Speaker 1: At the end of it, I believe in overtime that
- 4:39Speaker 1: the shot attempts were like eighty to fifty in favor
- 4:41Speaker 1: of Buffalo. It was probably a little bit more after
- 4:43Speaker 1: the graphic was shown there, But obviously, you know, Buffalo
- 4:47Speaker 1: I would say controlled play in this game tonight for
- 4:50Speaker 1: the most part, and you know Montreal had scored those
- 4:53Speaker 1: quick two goals. But when you really break down what
- 4:56Speaker 1: happened in this game tonight, you know, you look, you
- 4:59Speaker 1: can see it on the scre in there. I mean,
- 5:00Speaker 1: Buffalo shots thirty nine to twenty five. Montreal had a
- 5:03Speaker 1: lot more block shots, which may have led to them
- 5:07Speaker 1: being successful tonight. They had seven takeaways to the Sabers three.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Sabers had sixteen giveaways to Montreal's twenty two. But again,
- 5:15Speaker 1: like when you look at the underlying stats, and I
- 5:17Speaker 1: believe you had reposted something that Jay Fresh had put
- 5:20Speaker 1: out I think after the second period when it was
- 5:21Speaker 1: two to one, and it was very much in a
- 5:23Speaker 1: lopsided than Buffalo's favor.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Yeah, No, I mean, aside from I mean, even the
- 5:28Speaker 3: first period was ended up being a lot more even
- 5:31Speaker 3: according on what models you look at. But the second
- 5:33Speaker 3: period Buffalo dominated and they were only able to obviously
- 5:37Speaker 3: be Dobis once and that's kind of been it's been
- 5:40Speaker 3: the moral of the story for the Sabers is the
- 5:42Speaker 3: games that they were able to win, they were able
- 5:44Speaker 3: to get to Dobish early and often today they weren't
- 5:47Speaker 3: able to get to them early, but they were able
- 5:49Speaker 3: to get you know, they're able to get to them
- 5:51Speaker 3: and get two past them, but they couldn't find a
- 5:54Speaker 3: way to get that next goal. And that's kind of
- 5:56Speaker 3: been the issue with the Sabers this whole series, whether
- 5:58Speaker 3: it was you know, they scored first and five out
- 6:00Speaker 3: of seven games, and in a lot of those games
- 6:03Speaker 3: they ended up either trailing or tied after scoring the
- 6:06Speaker 3: first goal, like, they were never able to just continue
- 6:09Speaker 3: to add to that lead. And that's why in the
- 6:13Speaker 3: losses obviously the games that they won there with ad
- 6:15Speaker 3: but I'm talking specifically the losses, they were never able
- 6:17Speaker 3: to add to that lead and it came back to
- 6:18Speaker 3: bite them, and that's kind of what happened today. They
- 6:21Speaker 3: got down early, but when they got to Dobish, and
- 6:24Speaker 3: when they were able to tie the game up, they
- 6:26Speaker 3: were just not able to get that next goal. They
- 6:28Speaker 3: were rolling, they were an avalanche coming down the hill
- 6:30Speaker 3: and they just couldn't get it over the line and
- 6:33Speaker 3: end up, you know, it ends up biting them in
- 6:35Speaker 3: the butt. Like Dobish was rock solid in the third
- 6:38Speaker 3: period and in overtime despite giving up the tying goal,
- 6:41Speaker 3: he was the difference maker for Montreal and a handful
- 6:44Speaker 3: of the games.
- 6:45Speaker 2: That in this series.
- 6:46Speaker 3: And that's the biggest reason why Montreal is moving on today,
- 6:49Speaker 3: specifically from Game seven, Like Dobish is the bigg reason
- 6:52Speaker 3: why they're moving on.
- 6:54Speaker 1: And penalty is only one power play to each side.
- 6:57Speaker 1: I was happy that the refs sort of kept their
- 6:58Speaker 1: whistles away, except you know, their whistle. There was an
- 7:02Speaker 1: early whistle, which we'll get into. But as far as
- 7:04Speaker 1: the penalties go, I'm glad that they let them play.
- 7:06Speaker 1: For the most part. Into Game seven, Montreal scored in
- 7:09Speaker 1: their one power play. Buffle was not successful in their
- 7:11Speaker 1: one power play, I like, especially in Game sevens like,
- 7:14Speaker 1: I don't want to see it four or five power
- 7:16Speaker 1: plays either way. I know there was some stuff that
- 7:18Speaker 1: could have been called, and I know the Sabers fans
- 7:20Speaker 1: were really trying to get on the refs tonight, but
- 7:23Speaker 1: I don't know if you got any quick thoughts on
- 7:25Speaker 1: that side of it.
- 7:26Speaker 3: No, I mean, there was some stuff that could have
- 7:27Speaker 3: been called against Buffalo, some stuff that could have been
- 7:29Speaker 3: called against Montreal, and it is what it is. But
- 7:31Speaker 3: again big difference there. Montreal won for one, Buffalo over
- 7:34Speaker 3: one and really had I think Quinn had one decent
- 7:38Speaker 3: chance on the power play, but other than that, the
- 7:40Speaker 3: power play was abysmal and another big reason why they
- 7:44Speaker 3: had a chance to get momentum back with that power
- 7:45Speaker 3: play and they couldn't. And that's again been a pretty
- 7:49Speaker 3: common theme for the Sabers throat these playoffs and games
- 7:51Speaker 3: that they were unable to win.
- 7:52Speaker 1: We'll move forward with the scoring summary, brought to you
- 7:54Speaker 1: by the Nagore Employment Health Center, helping people find work
- 7:56Speaker 1: in the Naga region since nineteen eighty three. Check out
- 7:58Speaker 1: through up to date job board at HD does seed
- 8:00Speaker 1: if on your next work opportunity. Today, Montreal got the
- 8:03Speaker 1: opening goal. Philip to know is able to get that well,
- 8:06Speaker 1: I mean they didn't call it a kick, but Anderson
- 8:08Speaker 1: beat Byron.
- 8:09Speaker 2: It wasn't a kick.
- 8:10Speaker 3: If you watch the replays, skate his Yeah, it wasn't
- 8:13Speaker 3: a kick.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I know the the Sabers bench was screaming for
- 8:18Speaker 1: a review on that one. But when you look at
- 8:20Speaker 1: the overhead camera, he just kind of had had his
- 8:22Speaker 1: skate turned the one way. He didn't kick it in,
- 8:24Speaker 1: he just sort of it kind of hit off of
- 8:26Speaker 1: him off the Anderson shot. But I'm more concerned about
- 8:29Speaker 1: Byrom getting beat to the puck behind the net because
- 8:31Speaker 1: the Sabers had that puck and.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Common yeah, common theme all night for Bowen Byram.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Yeah, it was not his best game whatsoever. And I
- 8:40Speaker 1: know that they were rolling. Both teams are rolling five
- 8:42Speaker 1: defensemen and they're the fatigue factor gets into it as well.
- 8:45Speaker 1: But yeah, I think number four would would probably want
- 8:48Speaker 1: to have this game back. He passed up a few
- 8:49Speaker 1: opportunities as well. But yeah, Montreal gets that early lead,
- 8:54Speaker 1: or not early, but they get the lead to to
- 8:55Speaker 1: make it one nothing on the road. Once again, Lukenan
- 8:58Speaker 1: came up with two big saves after the slavkovsky Ford
- 9:01Speaker 1: check on Cawfield, and then Benson got a delay game
- 9:04Speaker 1: penalty which led to Montreal's only power play goal, although
- 9:07Speaker 1: I mean the Sabers almost killed it off. It was
- 9:09Speaker 1: right near the end of it. Bull Duke had come
- 9:12Speaker 1: out for the second unit and almost like whatever the
- 9:15Speaker 1: next line was going to be after the power play ended,
- 9:17Speaker 1: but the Sabers just kind of lost bull Duke, like
- 9:20Speaker 1: right out in the in the right circle there. I
- 9:22Speaker 1: don't know what talking and some of those guys were
- 9:24Speaker 1: looking at. But Suzuki makes the pass from from behind
- 9:26Speaker 1: the net and bull Duke's wide open to make it
- 9:29Speaker 1: to nothing.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Again, common common themes that have hurt the Sabers and
- 9:34Speaker 3: their losses hurt them today. I know this is more
- 9:37Speaker 3: of a penalty kill than a five on five, but
- 9:39Speaker 3: just poor, poor defensive zone coverage. Samuelson kind of tried
- 9:44Speaker 3: to play the behind the net pass and kind of
- 9:47Speaker 3: just gave away his position at the front. No, none
- 9:50Speaker 3: of the too high forwards even marked that bull Duke
- 9:53Speaker 3: was coming into the zone and he was just left
- 9:55Speaker 3: wide open and it was a really really nice shot
- 9:57Speaker 3: by him and just a what could have been a
- 10:01Speaker 3: backbreaking goal. It probably should have been a backbreaking goal,
- 10:03Speaker 3: but the Sabers were able to battle back after that one.
- 10:05Speaker 3: But again, it's just the common themes that you're seeing
- 10:07Speaker 3: with the Sabers this series has been when they lose,
- 10:10Speaker 3: they can't get the puck out, they lose a puck battle,
- 10:14Speaker 3: and then just poor defensive zone coverage, and all three
- 10:16Speaker 3: of those were pretty evident in the first period. They
- 10:18Speaker 3: cleaned it up a little bit as the game went on,
- 10:21Speaker 3: but in the first period really killed you. Starting the
- 10:24Speaker 3: game seven like that, and.
- 10:26Speaker 1: I feel like, for me, if the Sabers would have
- 10:28Speaker 1: won this game tonight, I had starred this as a
- 10:31Speaker 1: big turning point. The Textia breakaway Lucan and staying with
- 10:34Speaker 1: them that could have made it three to nothing. I
- 10:37Speaker 1: think that was obviously big because you go down three,
- 10:40Speaker 1: you probably don't even get to overtime at this point.
- 10:42Speaker 1: So I think Lucan in Again, we were pretty critical
- 10:45Speaker 1: of them after the Game five loss in Buffalo, where
- 10:49Speaker 1: the moments sort of looked too big for him, but
- 10:51Speaker 1: he definitely after those two goals, I feel like gave
- 10:54Speaker 1: Buffalo a chance to win. I mean, we're going to
- 10:56Speaker 1: talk about the overtime winner. I mean the overtime win aside.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I think you know, he he did his job. After
- 11:04Speaker 1: Montreal went up to nothing, I was pretty pleased with
- 11:07Speaker 1: the way that he played. Were there are a couple
- 11:08Speaker 1: of rebounds I want to have back, sure, but I
- 11:11Speaker 1: mean he got them to the overtime.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I'm not gonna sit here and say
- 11:14Speaker 3: he played bad. He didn't, but he had a couple
- 11:16Speaker 3: of nice breakaway saves and big saves and things like that.
- 11:19Speaker 3: But it again, it just comes down to in a
- 11:23Speaker 3: big moment, you needed him or your goalie in general,
- 11:27Speaker 3: to step up, and in the series, the goalie rarely
- 11:29Speaker 3: ever stepped up. I know he kept you in this
- 11:32Speaker 3: game as you battled back, I don't know. I mean, yeah,
- 11:35Speaker 3: he had some big saves and I'm not gonna say
- 11:37Speaker 3: he's the reason that they lost the game, but it's
- 11:39Speaker 3: pretty what happened in overtime can kind of wipe that
- 11:42Speaker 3: out because when they like, there's just no Dobis made
- 11:48Speaker 3: saves and kept Montreal in it, and Dobish won the
- 11:50Speaker 3: game for Buffalo. You can't say, really on any of
- 11:53Speaker 3: Buffalo's wins in this series that the goalie won.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Them the game, right, Yeah, I mean, that's not.
- 12:01Speaker 3: A recipe for success in the playoffs, Like in the
- 12:03Speaker 3: first round, Alex Line won them the game or two
- 12:05Speaker 3: in the first round. In the second round, line and
- 12:07Speaker 3: Lucanan really did not steal a game for the Sabers,
- 12:09Speaker 3: and that's a big reason why again this series even
- 12:12Speaker 3: went seven, and it's a big reason why they couldn't
- 12:15Speaker 3: win tonight because they were not able to get by Dobish,
- 12:20Speaker 3: something that they had done recently in the last couple
- 12:22Speaker 3: of games.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Big thanks to trip demand for the nine dollars and
- 12:26Speaker 1: ninety nine cent donation. Appreciate you being in our chat
- 12:29Speaker 1: for the post games. Really appreciate it. Needing the support
- 12:32Speaker 1: tonight for sure. Zucker on the two on one, I
- 12:35Speaker 1: don't know if you got any quick thoughts on that
- 12:37Speaker 1: chance that Buffalo had late in that first year. I mean,
- 12:40Speaker 1: Gary a follow up the pass.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Probably should have shot, But also him and Jlnius and
- 12:46Speaker 3: Quinn have been working that two on one game all
- 12:51Speaker 3: series long and it's kind of worked well, So I
- 12:55Speaker 3: would have liked to have seen him shoot there. But
- 12:57Speaker 3: I'm not going to criticize the guy for trying to
- 12:58Speaker 3: make him play that he had been consistently made making
- 13:00Speaker 3: the last three games, even though yes, obviously I would
- 13:02Speaker 3: have liked to see him bury that because he is
- 13:05Speaker 3: capable of scoring at the net front, but tough to
- 13:08Speaker 3: get on the guy for something.
- 13:10Speaker 2: He succeeded at three games in a row.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Now I should mention that there was another penalty called
- 13:15Speaker 1: in this game. It was originally a four minute high
- 13:18Speaker 1: sticking penalty that was negated after the review that obviously
- 13:21Speaker 1: showed that Benson got his stick up on Norris, which
- 13:24Speaker 1: you know that if that penalty stands, who knows what
- 13:27Speaker 1: we're saying right now, but it was clearly, you know,
- 13:29Speaker 1: Buffalo's own stick that high sticked Norris in the face.
- 13:33Speaker 1: So the rest made the right call there, and then
- 13:36Speaker 1: you know Buffalo is able to get their first goal.
- 13:39Speaker 1: You know, they get some zone pressure. With about eight
- 13:41Speaker 1: minutes left, Dolbis made a glove save on Talk Who's
- 13:45Speaker 1: you know, gonna really kick himself for this series. Buffalo
- 13:48Speaker 1: gets the goal lane, Hudson loses his stick and the
- 13:50Speaker 1: puck was kept in. Samerson kind of took that point
- 13:53Speaker 1: shot and Dolbich was screened a good shift by the
- 13:57Speaker 1: fourth line and the ford check there by Malenstein, and
- 14:00Speaker 1: it ends up hitting off of Greenway's pants and going
- 14:04Speaker 1: past Dobitch. But Samulson took the shot and it gets
- 14:07Speaker 1: buffalo on the board there with you know, finally being
- 14:09Speaker 1: able to break through.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, obviously it was a great shift by
- 14:12Speaker 3: the fourth line. They were able to work out of
- 14:14Speaker 3: the cycle there, and that's kind of what you expect
- 14:16Speaker 3: your fourth line to do.
- 14:17Speaker 2: I thought.
- 14:18Speaker 3: I thought they were pretty solid today for the most part,
- 14:21Speaker 3: and it was good to see them get rewarded with
- 14:22Speaker 3: a goal. Even Yeah, I mean it hit off Greenway's pants,
- 14:26Speaker 3: So the fourth line gets credit for the goal, and
- 14:28Speaker 3: Samuelson gets credit for a point because obviously he took
- 14:31Speaker 3: the shot.
- 14:32Speaker 2: I mean, it was just kind of.
- 14:36Speaker 3: It's a Usually it's a bonus when you're fourth line
- 14:38Speaker 3: chips in on the scoreboard, and it felt like it
- 14:39Speaker 3: wasn't a bonus today. It felt like it was a
- 14:42Speaker 3: necessary result because someone had to kind of settle things
- 14:47Speaker 3: in and it being the veteran line of Crevis Greenway
- 14:50Speaker 3: and Maleenstein just doing what they do and working the
- 14:52Speaker 3: puck down low and possessing the.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Puck, wearing you down and grinding you out. It was good.
- 14:58Speaker 3: It was a good good for them to break through,
- 15:00Speaker 3: and it kind of set the tone for the rest
- 15:01Speaker 3: of the regulation, which ended up being heavily in Buffalo's favor.
- 15:04Speaker 3: So with that, obviously, without that goal, we're not talking
- 15:07Speaker 3: about an overtime game, We're not talking about anything like that,
- 15:10Speaker 3: So good for them. I thought Greenway had some pretty
- 15:13Speaker 3: big moments in this series and some pretty bad moments
- 15:15Speaker 3: in this series too, but in this in this round
- 15:17Speaker 3: in particular, his bright spots probably outweighed his negatives, and
- 15:20Speaker 3: he deserved to get credit for a point on that
- 15:23Speaker 3: play because he was big on that shift.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Tamman mountains time and that really got the sabers and momentum.
- 15:28Speaker 1: They had a lot of late late second period pressure there.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Montreal sort of survived that period. The shot attempts after
- 15:33Speaker 1: two were thirty seven to thirteen in favor of Buffalo,
- 15:37Speaker 1: and Montreal was lucky to get to that room because
- 15:40Speaker 1: the Key Bank Center crowd was rocking tonight and they
- 15:44Speaker 1: definitely gave Buffalo some momentum. There are you going to
- 15:47Speaker 1: say something there?
- 15:48Speaker 2: No, No, You're good.
- 15:49Speaker 1: And then in the third period there Deno gets a
- 15:53Speaker 1: stick up on Samulson led to Buffalo's first power play.
- 15:56Speaker 1: As you mentioned, they did nothing on it, but later
- 15:58Speaker 1: in the period, Dollie was able to cut down from
- 16:00Speaker 1: the left wing off the face off face off win
- 16:03Speaker 1: by Ryan McLeod gave it to Owen Power and he
- 16:05Speaker 1: just sort of found Doleen, you know, with that quick
- 16:09Speaker 1: play to cut down low there and he goes short
- 16:12Speaker 1: side over the blocker of jak Abdobish and a really
- 16:15Speaker 1: nice goal and a really nice set up there from
- 16:17Speaker 1: Owen Power to find Doleen, And wow, what a difference
- 16:19Speaker 1: a face off win makes for Ryan McLeod and Buffalo
- 16:22Speaker 1: gets that game tied, and it just felt like as
- 16:24Speaker 1: that period was going on, they were gonna get they
- 16:26Speaker 1: were going to get that game tied. Montreal really didn't
- 16:29Speaker 1: have a lot of good opportunities. They were taking a
- 16:31Speaker 1: lot of perimeter shots and just dumping the puck in,
- 16:34Speaker 1: just trying to play a lot of prevent They couldn't
- 16:35Speaker 1: really get a lot inside on Buffalo's defense in that
- 16:39Speaker 1: third period. So Dollan gets the game tied and you know,
- 16:42Speaker 1: it sends Key Bank Center in a frenzy at the time.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Yeah, just an excellent, excellent, excellent set up by Owen
- 16:48Speaker 3: Power there to kind of control the puck. Nice behind
- 16:52Speaker 3: the net view showed Kirby Doc made a split second
- 16:57Speaker 3: error of not taking Dolling the full way, he kind
- 16:59Speaker 3: of cut into try and take ice away from Power,
- 17:01Speaker 3: and Power is able to dish it off to Dolly
- 17:03Speaker 3: and who then quickly put the puck in the back
- 17:06Speaker 3: of the net, and obviously the arena was going crazy
- 17:08Speaker 3: at that point. Buffalo had kind of been controlling the
- 17:10Speaker 3: game for a while there, and it really felt like
- 17:13Speaker 3: the game had finally swung back to them. Just like
- 17:17Speaker 3: I said, they just they weren't able to capitalize on
- 17:19Speaker 3: that momentum and beat Dobish again. They had plenty of chances,
- 17:21Speaker 3: probably should have gotten one or two buy them in
- 17:23Speaker 3: the last half of that third period, but just we're
- 17:25Speaker 3: unable to convert. But yeah, for the most part, like
- 17:29Speaker 3: the Sabers played extremely well, which is why I'm kind
- 17:31Speaker 3: of sitting here calm and pretty collected, because as angry
- 17:35Speaker 3: and upset as I want to be, unfortunately, that's just
- 17:37Speaker 3: the way this sport works. But it really felt like
- 17:41Speaker 3: the Sabers the last two games, maybe even three of
- 17:46Speaker 3: the last four games kind of swung back and showed
- 17:49Speaker 3: that they were able to not only play with Montreal
- 17:52Speaker 3: and play that speed up and down game, but today specifically,
- 17:55Speaker 3: we're able to play a really, really good, tight style
- 18:00Speaker 3: of game against a team with the speed and skill
- 18:02Speaker 3: of Montreal, because for the first six games we did
- 18:04Speaker 3: not see a style of hockey that was played tonight.
- 18:07Speaker 3: So it was good to see Buffalo get back to that.
- 18:09Speaker 3: And I genuinely thought that it would work in the
- 18:12Speaker 3: Sabers favor, but unfortunately it just it didn't.
- 18:14Speaker 1: So yeah, naturally this game goes to overtime, just so
- 18:17Speaker 1: that keeps us up longer and makes her anxiety even
- 18:20Speaker 1: that much bigger. Obviously, the few chances in overtime, Anderson
- 18:24Speaker 1: had a few good chances. One I wasn't able to
- 18:27Speaker 1: get the shot off, the other one he hit off
- 18:28Speaker 1: the post. And then Tage Thompson on that two on
- 18:30Speaker 1: one with Benson, I don't know what your thoughts on
- 18:33Speaker 1: that one were, No.
- 18:35Speaker 3: I mean, he he the drag at first I thought
- 18:39Speaker 3: was a bit unnecessary, but then when it kind of
- 18:42Speaker 3: showed the play if it looks like if he would
- 18:45Speaker 3: have shot at the exact moment he started the drag,
- 18:48Speaker 3: the Habs player was sliding into frame. He might have
- 18:51Speaker 3: gotten a piece of it. I don't know, but it
- 18:53Speaker 3: was good patience. He had a guy, you know, good
- 18:55Speaker 3: defensive played by Evans On there just was unable to
- 18:58Speaker 3: outwait Dobish. Dobish was rock solid in overtime, whether it
- 19:01Speaker 3: was not play, whether it was the Benson one time
- 19:03Speaker 3: or earlier, whether it.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Was the deflection.
- 19:07Speaker 3: I think Crabs fired a puck at the end, it
- 19:09Speaker 3: kind of got tipped and kind of just hit him
- 19:10Speaker 3: off his pad.
- 19:11Speaker 2: It was just.
- 19:13Speaker 3: The Sabers again for the most part in overtime, they
- 19:16Speaker 3: even felt like they were in control. It didn't feel
- 19:19Speaker 3: like they were going to lose that game because that's
- 19:20Speaker 3: how well that they were playing.
- 19:21Speaker 2: And then just.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Unfortunately, uh hesitation a bit of a not a great
- 19:30Speaker 3: play at the offensive line by Tage and Dollen, But
- 19:33Speaker 3: at the end of the day, I don't think it
- 19:36Speaker 3: should have mattered because I think your goalie needs to
- 19:38Speaker 3: make that safe, especially from that far out. It was
- 19:40Speaker 3: at the top of the circle. It wasn't in the
- 19:42Speaker 3: slought or anything like that, but probably a play that
- 19:45Speaker 3: Dolling and Tage are going to be thinking about for
- 19:47Speaker 3: a while because if they were just put the puck deep,
- 19:49Speaker 3: maybe that doesn't happen. But I think at the end
- 19:52Speaker 3: of the day, Luken is going to have to be
- 19:53Speaker 3: the one that lives with that because he let in
- 19:56Speaker 3: a softy when it mattered most.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Yeap new Hook gets the goal in overtime, you know,
- 20:01Speaker 1: down that left wing and as you mentioned, goes far
- 20:03Speaker 1: side glove. Lucan in after the saves he made in
- 20:06Speaker 1: this game, that one is one that he should have had,
- 20:08Speaker 1: and then the sports Net broadcast immediately showed him tossing
- 20:12Speaker 1: his goalie helmet down the Sabers tunnel in frustration. Obviously,
- 20:18Speaker 1: you know, not the way you want to end it.
- 20:19Speaker 1: And as you mentioned, Montreal's goaltender steals them the victory.
- 20:23Speaker 1: I mean, what more can you say? I mean, the
- 20:25Speaker 1: Sabers really played a played a solid game. They had
- 20:28Speaker 1: opportunities to end this thing. They just couldn't get past
- 20:32Speaker 1: Dobish as many time as they needed to, and they
- 20:34Speaker 1: lose this one three to two in overtime.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean saying this is going to st I'm
- 20:39Speaker 3: blaming Lucan at it.
- 20:40Speaker 2: I'm not.
- 20:40Speaker 3: But realistically games five and six, no, games five six.
- 20:47Speaker 3: They won six games four games. The games that they
- 20:50Speaker 3: Sabers lost, they did not get saves today. They got
- 20:54Speaker 3: a few saves, but they didn't get to save when
- 20:56Speaker 3: it mattered most and today Montreal got multiple.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Saves when it mattered most.
- 21:00Speaker 3: I'm not blaming lucan In, but at the end of
- 21:01Speaker 3: the day, lucanan lost the goalie battle. Lion loste the
- 21:05Speaker 3: goalie battle, as well all the other stuff that I
- 21:07Speaker 3: talked about throughout this series, whether it was the coaching,
- 21:09Speaker 3: the power play, the Henley cou those are all things
- 21:12Speaker 3: that we can talk about and things that definitely swung
- 21:14Speaker 3: this series towards Montreal. But at the end of the day,
- 21:17Speaker 3: if your goalie just makes saves, you win. That's the
- 21:21Speaker 3: biggest difference. They got saves in round one, they did
- 21:24Speaker 3: not get saves in round two.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Any thoughts on the coaching. I know you said that
- 21:28Speaker 1: after the Game five post game that you said that
- 21:30Speaker 1: Lindy was sort of getting from him from Saint Louis.
- 21:34Speaker 3: He was drastically getting out coached, I think. But then
- 21:37Speaker 3: Lindy kind of sucks that it come so long. But
- 21:40Speaker 3: Lindy pulled all the right levers in game six, and
- 21:42Speaker 3: I think he pulled the right levers tonight too. Whether
- 21:45Speaker 3: it was lucan In, whether it was you know, whether
- 21:48Speaker 3: it was treating it like a road game by staying
- 21:50Speaker 3: at a hotel and things like that, Like the Sabers
- 21:51Speaker 3: drastically the last two games played really well, so I
- 21:55Speaker 3: think he got out coach early on. But I think
- 21:57Speaker 3: he showed why he's a talented head coach and why
- 22:00Speaker 3: he's been around as long as he has, because he
- 22:02Speaker 3: proved he can make those adjustments. He proved he knows
- 22:04Speaker 3: how to still how to pull the levers of this team.
- 22:07Speaker 3: So early on it was a mismatch, but I think
- 22:10Speaker 3: when the Rough kind of punched back and reminded people
- 22:12Speaker 3: why he's a good head coach.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Yeah, and again Montreal is going to move on to
- 22:16Speaker 1: face the Montreal Canadian or the Carolina Hurricanes, excuse me?
- 22:20Speaker 1: And yeah, I mean, I don't know if there's anything
- 22:22Speaker 1: you want to mention right before we hit the Lindy Rough.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Any thoughts on the Sabers player stats tonight, you know,
- 22:30Speaker 1: anybody you want to mention that for good or bad reasons?
- 22:34Speaker 3: No, I mean, it's the same stat we've probably talked
- 22:35Speaker 3: about all series. It's just Alex Tuck cannot disappear the
- 22:39Speaker 3: way that he disappeared. And while he played well in
- 22:41Speaker 3: Game six, I thought he was absolutely abysmal tonight and
- 22:43Speaker 3: then not the reason that they lost, but a big
- 22:45Speaker 3: reason why they did. He had a couple of chances
- 22:47Speaker 3: to make some big plays, did nothing.
- 22:50Speaker 1: No points minus six in the home games for in
- 22:53Speaker 1: the second round for Alex Tuck and even Tage Thompson
- 22:56Speaker 1: and Krebs. That whole line well before when they wore
- 22:59Speaker 1: a line had struggled. Dobish after a loss was five
- 23:02Speaker 1: and oh after a win was one and six. So
- 23:06Speaker 1: obviously it worked. It'll favor that one. So it is
- 23:09Speaker 1: what it is.

- 27:48Speaker 1: of the late William Robert Hunter. Here's what Lindy Rouff
- 27:50Speaker 1: had to say following his team's three to two over.
- 27:52Speaker 8: Wist Nicole Mellenstein's no goal. Did they give you an
- 27:55Speaker 8: explanation on that?
- 27:59Speaker 6: No?
- 27:59Speaker 8: Just you know, I thought it was a little bit
- 28:02Speaker 8: of a quick whistle and because you can always go
- 28:06Speaker 8: back and look at those, but didn't really get an
- 28:10Speaker 8: explanation of it.
- 28:13Speaker 9: Lindy, With the way this series went back and forth,
- 28:16Speaker 9: I mean, did you and your staff anticipate overtime and
- 28:20Speaker 9: this kind of ending and how do he was a
- 28:22Speaker 9: coach prepare for a sudden death and possibly season ending overtime.
- 28:27Speaker 8: Well, I think we said at the start of this
- 28:29Speaker 8: series it was going to be two really good teams playing.
- 28:34Speaker 8: We had some momentum swings and you get to overtime.
- 28:38Speaker 8: We had a couple of really good chances when we
- 28:40Speaker 8: had the chances in our hands. Those are the opportunities
- 28:44Speaker 8: that you hope you get. We just didn't finish. We
- 28:49Speaker 8: had a couple of great opportunities, even in the third
- 28:52Speaker 8: the hllaneous toe slash glove save that that almost went.
- 29:01Speaker 8: You know, I think the ice was fairly tilted. We
- 29:03Speaker 8: had a lot of opportunities to make a difference in
- 29:07Speaker 8: the game.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Wendy.
- 29:10Speaker 10: When you're going into that overtime, the way the game
- 29:14Speaker 10: had been uphill and now you finally had a lot
- 29:17Speaker 10: of momentum going, how much would you think to yourself,
- 29:19Speaker 10: you're looking in that room, somebody is going to be
- 29:21Speaker 10: a hero for this team.
- 29:23Speaker 8: I thought it was just part of our journey, you know,
- 29:25Speaker 8: tough start where you know, we let one go in
- 29:29Speaker 8: off a skate a penalty that we were almost had killed.
- 29:33Speaker 8: We got just a little bit aggressive and left that front.
- 29:38Speaker 8: But these guys never quit all year, just another indication
- 29:41Speaker 8: you know, you battle hard. We stayed with the game.
- 29:44Speaker 8: We get we get one to make it two to one,
- 29:46Speaker 8: and we talked about playing the game the right way
- 29:49Speaker 8: and made a great playoff of face off and Doling
- 29:55Speaker 8: got us tied, and I really felt that the game
- 29:59Speaker 8: was right there.
- 30:01Speaker 3: On a personal level, what are the initial emotions of
- 30:03Speaker 3: the season ending that way tonight?
- 30:09Speaker 2: You know it hurts.
- 30:10Speaker 8: I told the team that it hurts. That pain will
- 30:16Speaker 8: go away, but I won't let this one game define
- 30:21Speaker 8: the season we had. I told the players how proud
- 30:25Speaker 8: of I was of them the battle to you know,
- 30:32Speaker 8: we took into Game six in Montreal and then came
- 30:35Speaker 8: back here and gave ourselves every chance to win. So
- 30:41Speaker 8: this one game doesn't define our season for us.
- 30:46Speaker 1: There was Lindy Roff on the Wild Bills out of
- 30:48Speaker 1: repair post game. We're not gonna play the whole thing tonight,
- 30:51Speaker 1: but as always A video courtesy of x dot Com,
- 30:53Speaker 1: Slash Buffalo Sabers MSG and the National Hockey League Austin.
- 30:57Speaker 1: What were your thoughts about what Lindy said to me?
- 31:00Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, sums it all up. One game doesn't
- 31:03Speaker 3: define your season. It sucked, but what are you gonna do?
- 31:07Speaker 3: Like I said, it's probably more topic for another day
- 31:10Speaker 3: when you have to discuss the season as the whole.
- 31:12Speaker 3: He wasn't They had chances to barry they didn't. But
- 31:15Speaker 3: at the end of the day, I postgame comments from
- 31:18Speaker 3: a coach after a game seven lots aren't gonna really
- 31:22Speaker 3: matter because unfortunately it was a good season. So like
- 31:26Speaker 3: he said, it does not define your season. So he's
- 31:28Speaker 3: gonna focus on the positive obviously, talk about a little
- 31:31Speaker 3: bit of what could have happened, what could have gone better,
- 31:33Speaker 3: and things like that.
- 31:33Speaker 2: But I have no, it doesn't matter.
- 31:37Speaker 3: The season's over right, Yeah.
- 31:41Speaker 1: I get it, And again those are tough to do,
- 31:43Speaker 1: especially after a loss like that. But yeah, I mean,
- 31:47Speaker 1: you talked about just being power proud of that group,
- 31:49Speaker 1: but you obviously want to see them finish the job
- 31:51Speaker 1: at the end of the day. So I guess as
- 31:54Speaker 1: we finish off here our feature or our stick top
- 31:57Speaker 1: of the game for our Sabers Player of the Game,
- 31:59Speaker 1: but brought by the Nagardentri clinic creating natural smiles in
- 32:02Speaker 1: the Naga region for over twenty five years, I'm not
- 32:04Speaker 1: even gonna give it to a player in this game tonight, Austin.
- 32:06Speaker 1: I just want to give a show out to Consta Helenus.
- 32:09Speaker 1: I think that what he showed in these last three
- 32:12Speaker 1: games that he played in, you know, the height of
- 32:16Speaker 1: the magnitude of these games, he shows that he can
- 32:19Speaker 1: hang and that he's going to be a long time
- 32:21Speaker 1: centerman in the National Hockey League at twenty one years old.
- 32:24Speaker 1: He came in, answered the bell, played great, The moment
- 32:27Speaker 1: didn't look too big for him. He had a lot
- 32:28Speaker 1: of opportunities in all these games he scored a goal,
- 32:31Speaker 1: had so many opportunities as well. But I just want
- 32:34Speaker 1: to give a show out to number ninety four Consta Helenus.
- 32:36Speaker 1: I think he's going to be a Saber for a
- 32:38Speaker 1: long time, and I think these three games that he's
- 32:40Speaker 1: had here in the playoffs are really going to help
- 32:42Speaker 1: him as he goes forward.
- 32:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:44Speaker 3: No, absolutely, he was awesome. I'll highlight I mean, you
- 32:47Speaker 3: can obviously talk about Dollian. I think Dallian has been
- 32:49Speaker 3: on an absolute tear last like four games. But I'll
- 32:53Speaker 3: just give props to Owen Power. I think you know
- 32:55Speaker 3: Dallian was Dollian when you know earlier in the series
- 32:58Speaker 3: he wasn't, but I think Owen power or obviously doesn't
- 33:01Speaker 3: have the points of the production. But what he was
- 33:03Speaker 3: able to do consistently performing in these playoffs, and I'm
- 33:05Speaker 3: sure we'll find out what actually happened to him at
- 33:07Speaker 3: the end of that game, what his injury was, but
- 33:09Speaker 3: the fact that he was able to cut it out
- 33:10Speaker 3: and play through what he's played through and still look
- 33:12Speaker 3: as effective as he have. Sure he doesn't throw people
- 33:17Speaker 3: through the boards, but I don't ever want to hear
- 33:18Speaker 3: a word about how he's soft ever again, because when
- 33:21Speaker 3: they needed him to, he's their second best defenseman at worst,
- 33:24Speaker 3: at times their best defenseman.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Well, as we wrap up Boston, don't know if you
- 33:28Speaker 1: got any quick thoughts on if you think Carolina is
- 33:31Speaker 1: gonna get through Montreal easily in the season final.
- 33:34Speaker 3: No, I'm going to remain pretty steadfast. I think whoever
- 33:36Speaker 3: won this year is was gonna be able to take Carolina.
- 33:39Speaker 3: I'm probably gonna I'm probably gonna look like an idiot
- 33:41Speaker 3: in two weeks.
- 33:41Speaker 1: But I just the time off is do you think
- 33:44Speaker 1: that plays?
- 33:44Speaker 3: No, it's not the time off. If you look at
- 33:46Speaker 3: what Montreal had done and Buffalo would have had a
- 33:48Speaker 3: similar path. Obviously Boston is not as good as Tampa Bay,
- 33:51Speaker 3: but both teams played a hard, checking, defensive style first round.
- 33:55Speaker 3: We're able to get through it, and then they played
- 33:56Speaker 3: in a running gun style, chaotic second round or the
- 34:00Speaker 3: ice was pretty open for the most part, So they've
- 34:02Speaker 3: both been tested in the playoffs through different styles of games.
- 34:06Speaker 3: Obviously Carolina is a different beast with the way that
- 34:08Speaker 3: they're able to play, but I just think what you
- 34:11Speaker 3: were able to see from Montreal in this series, they
- 34:14Speaker 3: were able to open the game up, and a lot
- 34:17Speaker 3: of that was Buffalo allowed.
- 34:18Speaker 2: Them to open the game up.
- 34:20Speaker 3: But I think for the most part, just the way
- 34:23Speaker 3: that their power play is able to create space and
- 34:25Speaker 3: kind of create absolute nightmares for the penalty kill is
- 34:28Speaker 3: a big thing. And it's easy to say Carolina's top
- 34:34Speaker 3: line hasn't performed and they're still playing well, which is
- 34:36Speaker 3: a positive for them, but I just think it's more
- 34:38Speaker 3: Freddie Anderson. I don't know if Freddy Anderson is going
- 34:41Speaker 3: to be able to keep up the level play that
- 34:42Speaker 3: he has done because Montreal is not Philadelphia and Ottawa.
- 34:46Speaker 3: No disrespect to those two teams, but they're a different animal.
- 34:49Speaker 1: I think there's a short leash to go to Boosy
- 34:51Speaker 1: if he struggles.
- 34:52Speaker 2: Even if there is, I don't think. I don't. I
- 34:56Speaker 2: don't think it matters.
- 34:57Speaker 3: It's the same thing. Even if Booski goes in. He's
- 35:00Speaker 3: playing a different style of team, a team that can
- 35:03Speaker 3: produce offense and has a ton of scorer.
- 35:05Speaker 2: So I don't know.
- 35:06Speaker 3: I just I have a sneaking suspicion that Montreal is
- 35:10Speaker 3: going to be able to get past him. I thought
- 35:13Speaker 3: I thought, like I said, I thought whoever won this
- 35:14Speaker 3: series was gonna be able to beat Carolina, So I'm
- 35:16Speaker 3: gonna stick with that.
- 35:17Speaker 2: Not plus it's.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Carolina exactly six oh seven still still hurts, or oh
- 35:25Speaker 1: five oh six, so they all blur together at this point.
- 35:27Speaker 1: I think it's oh five oh six, but yeah, Ottawa,
- 35:30Speaker 1: yeah exactly. So my final thought, Austin would just be like,
- 35:34Speaker 1: you know, obviously, we're gonna the people in the chat
- 35:37Speaker 1: talk about fix the goaltend and all that. We're gonna
- 35:38Speaker 1: get into that next week when we do our offseason
- 35:40Speaker 1: preview and everything like that. We're not gonna spend too
- 35:44Speaker 1: much time on it tonight, obviously, But uh, just what
- 35:46Speaker 1: a series. I mean, you know, for this to go
- 35:48Speaker 1: seven games, we said it was going to go seven
- 35:49Speaker 1: games coming in. These are two teams I think that
- 35:52Speaker 1: are going to be in this position for many years
- 35:55Speaker 1: to come. And uh, yeah, just it was nice to
- 35:58Speaker 1: be covering playoff hockey for the well for the first
- 36:01Speaker 1: time on this show. But just in general after fourteen seasons, Uh,
- 36:04Speaker 1: there's a lot of fun, man, and appreciated all the
- 36:07Speaker 1: uh the game, the late nights, and the postgame streams,
- 36:10Speaker 1: and uh, I know our our listener base appreciated it
- 36:13Speaker 1: as well.
- 36:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a good year.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Like I said, made the playoffs, you made game seven
- 36:17Speaker 3: of the second round. Can't complain. It's gotta hurt in
- 36:20Speaker 3: the moment, but obviously no one's gonna no one because
- 36:25Speaker 3: there's always gonna be some people, but most people are
- 36:27Speaker 3: not gonna look back on the season as a failure
- 36:29Speaker 3: as a fan. They were able to break the drought
- 36:31Speaker 3: and kind of do things that we thought worth punching
- 36:35Speaker 3: above their weight but evidently was not punching above their weight.
- 36:38Speaker 3: But yeah, it sucks, but you move on. You have
- 36:42Speaker 3: a off seas might be a little bit more fun
- 36:45Speaker 3: to discuss this year because the team is good now.
- 36:48Speaker 1: So yeah, they took They took that step on that ladder, right.
- 36:51Speaker 8: Uh.
- 36:52Speaker 1: You don't go from missing the playoffs in fourteenth three
- 36:54Speaker 1: years to winning the Stanley Cup, as cool as it
- 36:56Speaker 1: would have been this year, did they?
- 36:58Speaker 2: Did?
- 36:58Speaker 1: They take it? Took a big step, and we'll get
- 36:59Speaker 1: into all that in our next episode, but that's gonna
- 37:02Speaker 1: be it for tonight's postgame episode and our postgame live
- 37:05Speaker 1: stream following Game seven of the second round of the
- 37:08Speaker 1: Eastern Conference between the Buffalo Sabers and the Montreal Canadians,
- 37:11Speaker 1: Montreal winning the game three to two in overtime and
