Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's going on?
- 0:14Speaker 2: Everybody?
- 0:14Speaker 3: It's Jeff Mosher and Adam Kaplan here to finish part
- 0:18Speaker 3: two of our two part podcast. This is our twenty
- 0:21Speaker 3: and twenty six Eagles training camp primer. We're gonna focus
- 0:25Speaker 3: on the storylines, the questions, the things to monitor on defense,
- 0:29Speaker 3: and some special teams for the Eagles.
- 0:31Speaker 1: We did offense on Monday. Defense.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Adam, I think we've said this quite a bit throughout
- 0:36Speaker 3: the off season. Even though they lost some significant pieces,
- 0:41Speaker 3: they gained some they made how he made some good trades.
- 0:44Speaker 3: This is a defense that, especially in the third year,
- 0:48Speaker 3: with so many players already familiar with Vic Fangrio's scheme,
- 0:52Speaker 3: should really comfortably be able to just kind of come
- 0:56Speaker 3: into its own here and really rise. As long as
- 0:59Speaker 3: everybody stays healthy and produces the way they're expected to produce,
- 1:02Speaker 3: this could be an elite defense this year.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Now, as we've talked about in passing over the last
- 1:09Speaker 2: six weeks, there's certainly more questions than you think, and
- 1:14Speaker 2: it's just further development health. We'll get into contractual issue
- 1:20Speaker 2: big one, which we'll get into, and then they've had
- 1:25Speaker 2: a one position that's really bad on paper, we'll see
- 1:28Speaker 2: how it plays out and development of players and development
- 1:32Speaker 2: of backups because depth that's certain positions on defense, it's
- 1:36Speaker 2: just not good enough going in. But these will be
- 1:39Speaker 2: situations that will sort of resolve themselves, not totally, but
- 1:43Speaker 2: a lot through training camp of the preseason. But as
- 1:46Speaker 2: we've seen, Howie will make trades if he's not happy.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Ronald Darby in twenty seventeen, okay, c J Gardan Johnson
- 1:56Speaker 2: twenty twenty two home run, home run. He J was
- 2:00Speaker 2: a more of a home run. He was really really good.
- 2:02Speaker 2: The other stuff you deal with with this at whatever
- 2:04Speaker 2: you want to call it, attitude, you know, craziness, whatever,
- 2:07Speaker 2: it is. Terrific player, though there's a reason why he
- 2:09Speaker 2: keeps moving on and on and on and on and on.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Yeah, where is he not Buffalo again or something.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Buffalo and he's in Chicago Detroit twice Eagle Houston of
- 2:20Speaker 2: the they had enough. They actually cut him. Yeah, it's
- 2:23Speaker 2: just it's it's crazy. But we'll see how it plays out.
- 2:28Speaker 2: But they have a little bit more questions as we'll
- 2:29Speaker 2: get into than you think.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Mm hmmm. They do. They do.
- 2:32Speaker 3: And of course the position you were referring to that
- 2:34Speaker 3: that has the most questions of safety and and the
- 2:37Speaker 3: depth at it. But when we start up front, really
- 2:40Speaker 3: you go in and the biggest the two biggest things
- 2:43Speaker 3: that jump out to you are one is a health
- 2:44Speaker 3: one is a contract. Obviously Jai Well, you can actually
- 2:47Speaker 3: say contract slash health with Jill and Carter because they
- 2:51Speaker 3: can announce a new contract for him at any moment.
- 2:55Speaker 1: But we're always going to wonder, but are those shoulders repaired?
- 2:59Speaker 3: Like, are those is going to stand the test of
- 3:03Speaker 3: seventeen games, playoffs, you know, deep playoff run because he
- 3:07Speaker 3: didn't have a surgery.
- 3:09Speaker 1: He had issues with them last year, and they go
- 3:11Speaker 1: back to college and.
- 3:12Speaker 3: You wonder how much of an impediment they will be
- 3:14Speaker 3: for him going forward.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's gonna make less than four million, just
- 3:19Speaker 2: over three point seven million, fully guaranteed. That's I can't imagine. Well,
- 3:24Speaker 2: let's put it this way. I'd be stunned if he
- 3:27Speaker 2: plays on that number without it being some sort of
- 3:30Speaker 2: adjustment to make Joe Rosenhausen Jaalen Carter least happy for true,
- 3:34Speaker 2: of course, his agent make them happy for one season.
- 3:38Speaker 2: But here's the problem. He's coming off a down season
- 3:42Speaker 2: shoulder problems, wet. We've been talking about this since he
- 3:44Speaker 2: was drafted. The shoulder problems. We know about this. We're
- 3:46Speaker 2: probably the first ones to talk about it. There's goodcern
- 3:49Speaker 2: for clubs that would be nagging. Not sure in his career,
- 3:51Speaker 2: but it'd be nagging. Right, And here we go. He
- 3:54Speaker 2: had the procedures near the end of last season, wasn't
- 3:58Speaker 2: himself and who knows? I mean, it's as someone of
- 4:02Speaker 2: another team told me, and I've been using this line
- 4:04Speaker 2: a lot and I'm going to still use it. How
- 4:06Speaker 2: in the world do you come up with an extent,
- 4:08Speaker 2: a long term extension for a guy who's coming off
- 4:09Speaker 2: of this type of problem calf of down season. Yeah,
- 4:13Speaker 2: Dexter Lawrence that out the hard way. He has to
- 4:15Speaker 2: be traded. Why because he came off of a down season.
- 4:19Speaker 2: The Giants were willing to do his deal, but nowhere
- 4:20Speaker 2: near what he wanted he asked out. As much as
- 4:24Speaker 2: they didn't want to do it, they knew they couldn't
- 4:25Speaker 2: get there right. Well, you gotta be careful, like we'll
- 4:28Speaker 2: see what happens here.
- 4:30Speaker 1: I think the turn when scouts are somebody anyone right
- 4:33Speaker 1: could be coached. Whatever.
- 4:35Speaker 3: If someone tells us that a player has a nagging
- 4:37Speaker 3: injury and they're a shoulder injury, right, but they're a
- 4:41Speaker 3: defensive tackle and playing in the NFL right where you're
- 4:45Speaker 3: constantly in collision mode every single snap that you're on
- 4:50Speaker 3: the field. Nagging is more is to me more serious
- 4:54Speaker 3: than if you have a nagging shoulder injury and you're
- 4:56Speaker 3: a wide receiver right where you may not absorb much
- 5:00Speaker 3: contact comparatively detackle.
- 5:03Speaker 1: There's no lightning the load on those shoulders.
- 5:05Speaker 3: So nagging to me is still you know, high alert
- 5:10Speaker 3: because there's just a lot of wear and tear at
- 5:13Speaker 3: that position.
- 5:13Speaker 1: It's physically demanding. There's no letting up.
- 5:15Speaker 3: You can't masquerade arm and shoulder usage as a defensive tackle.
- 5:21Speaker 3: You can't shield yourself away from it, right like you
- 5:24Speaker 3: have to have upper bodies strength of course stranged down.
- 5:27Speaker 3: There's very few, I think injuries you can masquerade when
- 5:30Speaker 3: you're playing that kind of a position.
- 5:32Speaker 1: So nagging is big for that YEP.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Shoulder, pectoral and arm injuries are the most common YEP
- 5:40Speaker 2: for interior defensive linemen. And this it's concerning that he
- 5:46Speaker 2: wanted himself, he was not himself last season. Could he
- 5:49Speaker 2: get to be where he was in twenty four and
- 5:51Speaker 2: twenty three, don't know. So as I was talking to
- 5:55Speaker 2: this personal guy months ago, as I was saying, Hey,
- 5:58Speaker 2: what do you think the Generant Carter contract will look like?
- 6:00Speaker 2: And he goes, well, didn't he have didn't he down
- 6:02Speaker 2: have a good year? Did he have some shoulder problem?
- 6:03Speaker 2: Go yeah, he goes, there's not gonna be comparable contract
- 6:05Speaker 2: you're gonna be able to find. And then I was like, wow,
- 6:07Speaker 2: I never thought of it that way. That's true, it's obvious,
- 6:10Speaker 2: but I never would have thought like that. You know,
- 6:11Speaker 2: you have to try to think like NFL people to
- 6:13Speaker 2: understand why they do what they do right and why
- 6:16Speaker 2: they're not always right. But that that encapsulated the entire
- 6:19Speaker 2: situation how it's gonna be very hard to get a
- 6:23Speaker 2: real extent. We're talking about a long term extension at
- 6:25Speaker 2: thirty three to thirty five million a year. Get up
- 6:27Speaker 2: to Jeffrey Simmons, good luck, right, don't I don't know what.
- 6:31Speaker 2: I don't know what Rosenhals would use that that would
- 6:34Speaker 2: placate him and the Eagles be except I just I
- 6:37Speaker 2: don't know. It's it's good me hard, good me hard.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you know it reminds me of when, like
- 6:42Speaker 3: Jordan Milota signed his first extension. He had only played
- 6:46Speaker 3: left tackle for that year right and he played at
- 6:48Speaker 3: a pretty high level, so you could tell he was
- 6:49Speaker 3: really becoming a really good left tackle. He hadn't shown
- 6:53Speaker 3: enough to be a top five left tackle, but you
- 6:55Speaker 3: could tell he was gonna be the starting left tackle
- 6:58Speaker 3: as long as he signed that cock track for years
- 7:00Speaker 3: to come.
- 7:00Speaker 1: But he also had two years of a back injury.
- 7:04Speaker 3: That the team had to have in the back of
- 7:07Speaker 3: its mind and the player had to know and understand
- 7:10Speaker 3: as they were negotiating. So the Eagles have been down
- 7:13Speaker 3: the road before they understand what it is. It's just
- 7:15Speaker 3: getting both sides to kind of commonly understand that there's
- 7:19Speaker 3: there's a risk involved here that involves both injury. I mean,
- 7:23Speaker 3: obviously there's been some off the field stuff with Jillen
- 7:26Speaker 3: going back to college, but he's been generally fine as
- 7:29Speaker 3: an NFL player. You know, he did have the spitting thing.
- 7:32Speaker 3: He does have to grow up a little bit more.
- 7:34Speaker 3: I think he had the yelling at the crowd and
- 7:36Speaker 3: saying in the New Orleans thing. So there's little things
- 7:40Speaker 3: that all have to factor into this. But for the
- 7:43Speaker 3: purposes of training camp, what you don't want, and what
- 7:45Speaker 3: the Eagles haven't had in a while, maybe since Hassan Reddick,
- 7:48Speaker 3: which wasn't even that big of a deal. Was a
- 7:51Speaker 3: guy not either holding in or not showing up. And
- 7:54Speaker 3: then you know, questions for the head coach, questions for
- 7:58Speaker 3: the teammates action element of it all.
- 8:02Speaker 1: You just it could happen if he holds in, if
- 8:05Speaker 1: that's a route that.
- 8:06Speaker 3: He chooses to take it, it'll probably get a few
- 8:08Speaker 3: days worth of coverage and you'll see what it does
- 8:10Speaker 3: to the whole vibe of camp.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's.
- 8:17Speaker 2: It's gonna be it's gonna be fascinating to see what
- 8:19Speaker 2: happens here because it's gonna be hard to find a
- 8:21Speaker 2: common ground with my lotta he had, he had back concerns,
- 8:26Speaker 2: and now Eagles found a common ground. He didn't get
- 8:29Speaker 2: a market deal his first one because they were taking risk.
- 8:32Speaker 2: They absolutely were taking a risk. They were right, I mean,
- 8:35Speaker 2: how he is right m h. And then you know,
- 8:37Speaker 2: got a better deal the second time. But you know,
- 8:40Speaker 2: you're always worried about so on six foot eight, three
- 8:43Speaker 2: hundred and seventy five pounds, it's anster, Yeah, it's and
- 8:48Speaker 2: by the way, he was over four hundred pounds at
- 8:49Speaker 2: one point during the school understand it.
- 8:50Speaker 1: So that's right, it's.
- 8:52Speaker 2: A little different, yeah, in the in the same area,
- 8:55Speaker 2: but that's something will be obviously, that's a number. That's
- 8:57Speaker 2: a number one issue with seeing how it's handled. By
- 8:59Speaker 2: the way, holdens are almost always agreed upon from with
- 9:01Speaker 2: the club, like you okay, but it's generally because you're
- 9:06Speaker 2: trying to negotiate an extension or a new or a
- 9:08Speaker 2: revised contract. H I was there for one many years ago.
- 9:12Speaker 1: It was.
- 9:14Speaker 2: It was the charger safety Derwin James, and he was
- 9:20Speaker 2: working out with the trainer. But what is not practicing
- 9:22Speaker 2: And I remember talking the front office. Oh yeah, we
- 9:24Speaker 2: agreed on this. We're fine with it. We know we're
- 9:27Speaker 2: going to get a deal done. It may take all camp,
- 9:29Speaker 2: but we're getting a deal done. And that's you know,
- 9:31Speaker 2: that was it was agreed upon. That was fine. There
- 9:32Speaker 2: was no it was not contentious at all this one.
- 9:35Speaker 2: We've Drew's done a good job for a long time
- 9:38Speaker 2: of not making things contentious where he used to as
- 9:40Speaker 2: you know it. Lito Shepherd, Yeah, yoh, yoh, yeah. I
- 9:47Speaker 2: mean you could go through a lot. But anyway that
- 9:49Speaker 2: that's that to me is number one.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely number one.
- 9:52Speaker 3: All right, another big thing we're looking I want to
- 9:56Speaker 3: get into a little bit of conversation about accountability, but
- 9:58Speaker 3: so that it's going to happen here with Greek Wollan
- 10:00Speaker 3: is now an Eagle. People are very excited. His teammates
- 10:04Speaker 3: are excited about him. He really showed some elements of
- 10:08Speaker 3: his game or the positives and OTAs because he was sticky, got.
- 10:11Speaker 1: His hands on on passes.
- 10:13Speaker 3: I mean, the upside for Rik Woollen is tremendous and
- 10:17Speaker 3: that could be one of those things that takes this
- 10:18Speaker 3: Eagles defense from being really good to like elite as
- 10:22Speaker 3: long as he is dead set on being as good
- 10:26Speaker 3: of a player as he's been, if not better. All right,
- 10:28Speaker 3: But at the same time, we talked about his discipline, right,
- 10:32Speaker 3: the fact that he was the leader of the he
- 10:34Speaker 3: led the Seahawks and penalty the artich last year, and
- 10:36Speaker 3: a lot of it was.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Was taunting personal fouls.
- 10:41Speaker 3: He came to Philadelphia and his press conference, he said
- 10:44Speaker 3: he understood that was an issue that he had to
- 10:46Speaker 3: work on. Nick Sirianni said, it's something that they're going
- 10:49Speaker 3: to discuss and make sure he's working on But how
- 10:51Speaker 3: how do you have a player? How do you work
- 10:53Speaker 3: on that, Adam? And you know, part of me wonders
- 10:56Speaker 3: if because we know how Syrianni thinks outside the box, right,
- 10:59Speaker 3: he does these basketball games with people who are draft
- 11:02Speaker 3: you know, draft prospects. Part of me wonders if he
- 11:05Speaker 3: doesn't tell the receivers, you know, try to get under
- 11:07Speaker 3: his skin in practice, see how he reacts.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Like you have to. You have to put him in
- 11:11Speaker 1: the pressure cooker. You can't just.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Say I'm gonna be a different guy or we're gonna
- 11:16Speaker 3: coach him hard and not do anything about it. I'm
- 11:18Speaker 3: very curious to see how they resolve this issue that
- 11:21Speaker 3: he's had for not just last year, I think even
- 11:23Speaker 3: the year before.
- 11:23Speaker 1: He was known for doing that stuff.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Yeah, on your point about the discipline, the Patriots, I
- 11:29Speaker 2: remember talking to them. They were absolutely aware of everything
- 11:31Speaker 2: that he'd It's because of the tape. They're looking at
- 11:34Speaker 2: the tape. They they have the penalty numbers, they know
- 11:37Speaker 2: he plays without discipline, they know what happened before they
- 11:39Speaker 2: played him, played against the Seahawks. So yeah, you're right,
- 11:45Speaker 2: absolutely is a factor.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Mm hm.
- 11:47Speaker 2: And it basically otis or flag football. It's super light.
- 11:51Speaker 2: It's just it's passing camps. Look great, look great. But
- 11:55Speaker 2: now that that's what I've called double A baseball at
- 11:57Speaker 2: we're at triple A now now now, now you're actually
- 12:01Speaker 2: running your stuff. Now. I don't know if he's even
- 12:04Speaker 2: going to play in the preseason, so this is really
- 12:06Speaker 2: big for him. And he doesn't have ag Brown to
- 12:07Speaker 2: go up against, though he's got He'll see DeVante right
- 12:11Speaker 2: if anyone could beat him, and look, he's Joe Banner
- 12:15Speaker 2: would always say this for me. Egal's president. They absolutely
- 12:18Speaker 2: loved veteran players who felt came in, felt disrespected or
- 12:25Speaker 2: wanted They wanted a multiple year deal, didn't get what
- 12:28Speaker 2: they wanted, or maybe they got a multiple year offer
- 12:31Speaker 2: but the second year was terrible mm hmm. And they
- 12:34Speaker 2: coming with a chip and this he's make a good coin.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Twelve million fully guaranteed, so he's going to be the
- 12:38Speaker 2: roster even if he's terrible. But the thing is they
- 12:42Speaker 2: have nowhere else to go. They are so thin a corner.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Like their last thing they want to do. I'm not
- 12:48Speaker 2: saying it can't happen. They absolutely could happen, but they
- 12:50Speaker 2: don't want to do it. They don't want to move
- 12:52Speaker 2: Cooper to gen back to the corner. That's not what
- 12:54Speaker 2: they want to do.
- 12:54Speaker 3: No, they can at this point, right, because that would
- 12:56Speaker 3: really weaken them as safety even further.
- 12:58Speaker 2: They would have they're gonna what they're gonna do. Jonathan
- 13:01Speaker 2: Jones would be the first choice. Yeah, at thirty three
- 13:03Speaker 2: years old, which he turned to September. We've talked about
- 13:05Speaker 2: many times. Who the hell knows? See what he looks
- 13:08Speaker 2: like in training camp.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Wouldn't you consider Jonathan Jones one of the biggest wild
- 13:11Speaker 3: cards of camp. I mean if he's if he's looks
- 13:16Speaker 3: any bit like a thirty Look how fast.
- 13:18Speaker 1: It went down for for Bradbury, right, Like if at
- 13:22Speaker 1: thirty three is like that, Yeah, it was like a fingerstanding.
- 13:25Speaker 3: If at thirty three Jonathan Jones just doesn't have it,
- 13:28Speaker 3: then they're back to just no answers at that position
- 13:31Speaker 3: as far as hello, right, yeah, Yeah, they rely on
- 13:36Speaker 3: a thirty three year old to have that kind of
- 13:38Speaker 3: like an impact on your team.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Ringo went from no defensive steps of the season two.
- 13:43Speaker 2: He's gonna have to get in the rotation. Yeah, that's
- 13:45Speaker 2: how bad it would be if Will and got hurt
- 13:47Speaker 2: or his bench. He's probably gonna have to take corner snaps.
- 13:51Speaker 2: They don't want that. I would, you know, we we've
- 13:55Speaker 2: said this. Vic tells you what he thinks of you
- 13:57Speaker 2: at a position. He doesn't play what he doesn't think
- 13:59Speaker 2: you could help them. And he took he took Rinkle
- 14:01Speaker 2: out of the rotation. But yet he's got he knows
- 14:03Speaker 2: the defense right, but they don't. I mean Mac McWilliams.
- 14:07Speaker 2: That's not an answer. Ambry Thomas is not an answer. Though
- 14:09Speaker 2: he's got starting experienced caster field is certainly not an answer.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Yeah, it's that's why he's the biggest X factor in
- 14:15Speaker 3: camp to me, Like what is Jonathan Jones at thirty
- 14:17Speaker 3: three years old?
- 14:18Speaker 1: You just need to know.
- 14:20Speaker 3: And yeah, and to your point on Vic, remember Vic
- 14:24Speaker 3: has already told told you that Riek Wollen is a
- 14:28Speaker 3: full time corner. He is a three down, four down corner,
- 14:32Speaker 3: which means because he wasn't that in Seattle, his workload's
- 14:36Speaker 3: about to get bigger, which means on the field, in
- 14:39Speaker 3: running downs right when he's not the most physical. He's
- 14:42Speaker 3: a tall, thin, long legged corner who doesn't necessarily play
- 14:48Speaker 3: the run as well as you'd like run a corner
- 14:51Speaker 3: to well, any player too. I mean he's he's gonna
- 14:54Speaker 3: have to be asked to do that. So to your
- 14:56Speaker 3: point on injury and the probability of it, well, he's
- 14:59Speaker 3: gonna see more snaps now, and those snaps that he's
- 15:02Speaker 3: going to see that are more of are going to
- 15:03Speaker 3: be running snaps because he was always in on passing downs.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Well, he actually until last year, first year was a
- 15:11Speaker 2: full time corner all three downs. Well, first year, yep,
- 15:13Speaker 2: oh yeah, all right, ninety eight percent of the snaps
- 15:15Speaker 2: twenty three. Now, he did missed a little bit of
- 15:17Speaker 2: time in twenty three, not eighty five percent of snaps,
- 15:22Speaker 2: ninety percent in twenty four. I did miss some time.
- 15:28Speaker 2: And then last year he was bench temporarily so and
- 15:32Speaker 2: he played just seventy eight percent of the snaps his
- 15:36Speaker 2: special teams. It's interesting the special team's numbers were way
- 15:38Speaker 2: down in steps only thirteen overall thirteen special team snaps
- 15:43Speaker 2: only three percent. So yeah, it's corner.
- 15:45Speaker 1: We'll see how much special team snaps did he play
- 15:49Speaker 1: his rookie year.
- 15:50Speaker 2: A lot one hundred and eighteen he had twenty five
- 15:52Speaker 2: percent a lot.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Well, no, but that's not a big percentage of it.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Though, twenty five percent. I mean he's what over one
- 15:58Speaker 2: hundred snaps?
- 15:59Speaker 1: Yeah, usually your fourth cour Well, he started as a rookie, ye.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Just starting started every yew that was he was wow
- 16:07Speaker 2: good mm hmm, like.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Typically surprise a sixth round pick, rightith round pick?
- 16:15Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, he was a singer by guy. But my god,
- 16:19Speaker 2: it was like John Schneider and Pete Carl must have
- 16:22Speaker 2: absolutely loved it. I mean, when you find a guy
- 16:25Speaker 2: like this, what a value of UTSA? I remember him
- 16:30Speaker 2: Texas San Antonio. But then he just regressed and to
- 16:34Speaker 2: the point you just why is it? One of our
- 16:37Speaker 2: training camp questions, which is obvious, but it's the question
- 16:43Speaker 2: is what the hell is he? Is he going to
- 16:44Speaker 2: be great? Average? Bad? Nobody knows. You can't base anything
- 16:49Speaker 2: of ots. It doesn't mean anything. The only thing that
- 16:51Speaker 2: he got out of it is he now sees the
- 16:53Speaker 2: way the coach, what the what Vic wants h the
- 17:00Speaker 2: cornerbacks coach Roy Anderson. Once Joe Casper oversees the defense
- 17:05Speaker 2: of the secondary, you know, it's what they want. But
- 17:07Speaker 2: until you get real competition, which is gonna come and training, kid,
- 17:10Speaker 2: we're gonna we're just certainly gonna learn a lot. We'll
- 17:12Speaker 2: learn way more than we did in O t E. Right.
- 17:14Speaker 1: I it's hard to reconcile in my head that the Seahawks.
- 17:19Speaker 3: Won a Super Bowl with him playing a prominent role
- 17:21Speaker 3: but also tried to trade him. So yeah, it's it's
- 17:24Speaker 3: just a really it's it's an interesting dynamic. Yep, yep,
- 17:28Speaker 3: all right, as we say in the second stick in
- 17:30Speaker 3: the secondary. I don't know if I this is a
- 17:32Speaker 3: concern for me. This is just a curious I think
- 17:34Speaker 3: he's gonna be fine. But obviously Cooper de Jean's going
- 17:37Speaker 3: to play safety for the first time. I think you
- 17:40Speaker 3: saw the OTAs if you watch any videos he was
- 17:43Speaker 3: putting on weight, he did look more muscular up top.
- 17:46Speaker 1: I mean he's ready for that position. Yeah, yeah, he
- 17:49Speaker 1: looks like a big dude, strong dude. I should say, yeah.
- 17:52Speaker 1: But it is different angles, different responsibilities.
- 17:56Speaker 3: And again the big X factor is are the Eagles
- 17:59Speaker 3: going to be more base defense because of what their
- 18:01Speaker 3: opponents do this year? Meaning he'll play more safety than
- 18:04Speaker 3: he did outside corner, or you know, if the team's
- 18:08Speaker 3: really good and gets out the big leads and teams
- 18:09Speaker 3: have to pass, he can wind up being in the
- 18:12Speaker 3: in the slot just as much as last year, so
- 18:14Speaker 3: that that's sort of and then when that happens, who
- 18:16Speaker 3: is going to be that other safety?
- 18:18Speaker 1: Then that becomes a real.
- 18:20Speaker 2: And Nickel does he ask him to do more things
- 18:24Speaker 2: because that's sort of what we call it dynamic Nickel.
- 18:25Speaker 2: He's just not a slot corner. That's really not He's
- 18:28Speaker 2: not been that only since he was drafted. Date if
- 18:30Speaker 2: I has to do different things, but how far can
- 18:33Speaker 2: they take his learning and talent because he's such a
- 18:38Speaker 2: super athlete. Yep, he's so talented. And yeah, there were
- 18:42Speaker 2: questions what was his position? Why did he not go
- 18:44Speaker 2: in the first round? It's real simple. Nobody knew for
- 18:47Speaker 2: sure what his best position would be. That's a problem. Yep, Okay,
- 18:50Speaker 2: that's a problem. He was a good not great corner.
- 18:53Speaker 2: He's an elite Nickel. Elite okay mm hm, you know
- 18:57Speaker 2: everybody could have unless who the best Nickels are and
- 18:59Speaker 2: starts with him and ends with him. There's number one
- 19:01Speaker 2: but he but now at safety, I think we share
- 19:05Speaker 2: this information. When he was drafted, most teams saw him
- 19:07Speaker 2: as a safety long term, yes, and we we believed
- 19:09Speaker 2: as we talked about a year ago. Don't be surprised
- 19:11Speaker 2: that Victmisom is safety. We didn't know, now, okay, I
- 19:15Speaker 2: didn't know that if he was going to do it
- 19:16Speaker 2: when he when he leave him Nickel two, I didn't
- 19:18Speaker 2: know that. I thought would just be full time safety,
- 19:20Speaker 2: no more nickel. Nope, he's gonna split it. That's a
- 19:23Speaker 2: lot of mental gymnastics.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 19:25Speaker 2: So we'll see and then we you may. I don't
- 19:29Speaker 2: know if we'll see it because he hasn't he has
- 19:32Speaker 2: he did in previous training camps, only be returning punts.
- 19:36Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Oh no, not a VIC fan.
- 19:40Speaker 2: I know. I'm just saying I know because I heard
- 19:43Speaker 2: him say that. But I'm just just putting out there.
- 19:47Speaker 2: We'll we'll keep obviously you'll know on day one. Although
- 19:50Speaker 2: warning people, I'm crazy with weather. I have a tour
- 19:53Speaker 2: coming up, and you know, I got to know what
- 19:55Speaker 2: the weather looks like every day sometimes hour by hour,
- 19:57Speaker 2: looks like rain on Wednesday and looks like they could
- 19:59Speaker 2: be inside, which is the worst.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Yes, no doubt about it. You can't.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Coaches can't do everything that they want right, and it's
- 20:07Speaker 2: it's it's like a line dance. It's awful. You know
- 20:10Speaker 2: it's hard, man. What were you there? And you've been
- 20:14Speaker 2: in in recent years though, have you been inside in
- 20:16Speaker 2: their in their practice facility yet still hard as hell?
- 20:22Speaker 3: Yeah, well, now it's better than when they were at
- 20:26Speaker 3: Lehigh and then they would go practice in the basketball
- 20:28Speaker 3: That was terrible.
- 20:30Speaker 1: That was absolutely There are two things that.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Stick out to me during those days that I can't
- 20:35Speaker 3: believe like an NFL team would have to do. One
- 20:38Speaker 3: is having a training camp practice in the basketball gymnasium.
- 20:41Speaker 3: The other is when Washington used to practice at an airport.
- 20:46Speaker 3: Remember that, No, no, that the practice on that at
- 20:51Speaker 3: airport hangar whenever the I think when the weather was
- 20:54Speaker 3: bad or something like that.
- 20:55Speaker 2: That I mean that would make some sense. But anyway,
- 20:59Speaker 2: and also want safe d before we move on. It's
- 21:02Speaker 2: just the same. The safety position is so bad overall.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I don't want to say yet.
- 21:07Speaker 2: I mean, I have a lot of questions, quality of depth,
- 21:11Speaker 2: the talent level. Apps is a journeyman, he's in his thirties,
- 21:14Speaker 2: had an AC injury three years ago.
- 21:15Speaker 3: He's yeah, I mean, I agree, there's certainly a potential
- 21:18Speaker 3: to really be disappointing.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I would agree.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Macouba's talented. He got hurt talking about the overall quality position.
- 21:25Speaker 2: He got one guy who's talent who could also play
- 21:27Speaker 2: nickel if you need him to in Macoba. Yeah, Apps
- 21:29Speaker 2: on the backside of his career, right, Michael Carter was
- 21:32Speaker 2: once one of the better nickels the national football he's
- 21:34Speaker 2: fallen off. We have to see Andre sam is a
- 21:37Speaker 2: for safety. That's that's what he is. Right, We've talked
- 21:41Speaker 2: about our guy, Maximus Pulley. He's our he's our, he's
- 21:44Speaker 2: our training camp Darling where we're looking forward to seeing
- 21:47Speaker 2: if he could be that guy. But it's it's a
- 21:49Speaker 2: long shot.
- 21:51Speaker 3: This guy, this guy, to your point, he is known
- 21:54Speaker 3: for being a plant, reading eyes, getting breaks at five
- 21:57Speaker 3: in Think about it. Every time he's on the field
- 21:59Speaker 3: with a third string he's probably going up against Cole
- 22:02Speaker 3: Peyton with the third string offense. So if Cole Peyton,
- 22:05Speaker 3: who needs a lot of technical work and developer, wants
- 22:07Speaker 3: to try to drive the ball and Maximus can read
- 22:09Speaker 3: his eyes and take advantage, I could see him. I
- 22:11Speaker 3: could see him creating turnovers left and right and camp well,
- 22:14Speaker 3: we'll see.
- 22:15Speaker 2: We'll see. But overall, it's the quality of the group
- 22:18Speaker 2: other than a guy who's coming off injury in Macoba
- 22:21Speaker 2: is really questionable. It's it's really not good.
- 22:24Speaker 3: And you would agree right though that like when you're
- 22:27Speaker 3: no matter how talented of an overall team you are.
- 22:30Speaker 3: I'm not talking about the Eagles, just in the NFL.
- 22:32Speaker 3: Every team's got one spot that you just can't have,
- 22:35Speaker 3: I know, but really great, Yeah.
- 22:39Speaker 2: You don't want you never.
- 22:42Speaker 3: Offensive line. Seattle's offensive line is not. They have one
- 22:44Speaker 3: of the worst guards in football, the right guard. I
- 22:47Speaker 3: can't remember his name right now, but I know he
- 22:49Speaker 3: was not good at all. But they won a Super Bowl.
- 22:52Speaker 3: They have really bad interior offensive line and they won
- 22:55Speaker 3: a Super Bowl.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:58Speaker 2: I remember having this argument with a coach many years
- 23:01Speaker 2: ago about, oh, it's okay, you guys aren't great guard
- 23:04Speaker 2: and I guess you you know, you always you could
- 23:06Speaker 2: cover it up, get away with the goose. Dude, you
- 23:07Speaker 2: never go in. You don't you know, you're you're thinking
- 23:09Speaker 2: like a fan, or you never want to accept that
- 23:12Speaker 2: you can't be good. Now the reality is, yes, you're right,
- 23:15Speaker 2: you're probably not gonna good at all twenty two, but
- 23:17Speaker 2: you never as a coach, well you know what he's
- 23:20Speaker 2: kind of saying. I know, what the limitations are. But
- 23:22Speaker 2: I'm not thinking like I can't get this guy to
- 23:23Speaker 2: play like a good starter, right, you know, but right
- 23:27Speaker 2: safety is a problem. I'll teams take expose it. We'll
- 23:32Speaker 2: see we're gonna. This is one where no no position
- 23:37Speaker 2: on the Eagles has more questions by far than safety.
- 23:39Speaker 2: It is just a total question.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Mark, without a doubt.
- 23:44Speaker 2: And that's why how how now how he said he's
- 23:46Speaker 2: still gonna even though you know they have enough guys
- 23:49Speaker 2: and they drafted Wiznowski, he said they're still gona add someone.
- 23:51Speaker 2: He didn't give it the timeline, and I they have
- 23:53Speaker 2: to add a veteran. They need to do that before
- 23:55Speaker 2: the season starts. But you don't need to do it
- 23:57Speaker 2: day one. You could do it day one if you want,
- 23:59Speaker 2: but you want to what you have first. Right now,
- 24:01Speaker 2: there's gonna be real competition.
- 24:04Speaker 3: Hey, Philly fans, Game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
- 24:08Speaker 3: long lines, We've all been there. But when it comes
- 24:11Speaker 3: to your cannabis, Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is
- 24:15Speaker 3: the dispensary for sports fans just minutes outside of Philly,
- 24:20Speaker 3: with plenty of free parking. You'll be in and out fast,
- 24:23Speaker 3: no hassle, no waiting, and they don't just care about convenience.
- 24:27Speaker 3: Camedn Apothecary is all about the guest experience. Their staff
- 24:31Speaker 3: makes sure you feel taken care of every time you

- 24:38Speaker 3: at the fairest prices, So whether you're stocking up for
- 24:41Speaker 3: the tailgate, the watch party, or celebrating a big win,

- 24:49Speaker 3: even show love to the community with specials for fans, students,
- 24:54Speaker 3: service members, and healthcare pros. Camedn Apothecary top quality cannabis,
- 24:59Speaker 3: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 25:02Speaker 3: one and up.
- 25:04Speaker 1: All right, what else? So the edge group, the edge
- 25:06Speaker 1: group is uh, looks not to me.
- 25:09Speaker 3: It's just about what we talk about sometimes it's not
- 25:11Speaker 3: about performance, about health. And Grenard is coming off his
- 25:14Speaker 3: shoulder surgery and as long as he's fine, he should
- 25:18Speaker 3: be good. But you know, we got to see it,
- 25:20Speaker 3: got to make sure he's okay.
- 25:22Speaker 4: So the questions on this position are the development of
- 25:25Speaker 4: Smith and Hunt. Sounds like a law firm, but Smith
- 25:30Speaker 4: Hunting Grenard, Yeah, Smith, Nolan Smith junior. He just does
- 25:36Speaker 4: not being able to put it together for a season.
- 25:38Speaker 4: This is a big year for him, Yeah, it is.
- 25:40Speaker 2: This he's actually eligible for a contract extension. And then
- 25:43Speaker 2: Hunt was just so good last season, particularly in the
- 25:45Speaker 2: second half of the season. You're looking for him to
- 25:48Speaker 2: take that next step. I mean, I put my money
- 25:50Speaker 2: on him starting over Smith. I'd be very surprised if
- 25:52Speaker 2: Smith started over him.
- 25:55Speaker 1: But their questions would be very only because Nolan Smith's
- 25:57Speaker 1: a really good run to the one content about he's
- 26:00Speaker 1: a really good run defender.
- 26:01Speaker 3: I know, but in your to to take your words
- 26:04Speaker 3: into true context, if we're talking about who plays the
- 26:07Speaker 3: most snaps, I would agree with you for talking about
- 26:09Speaker 3: who's out there on first, first second down, it might
- 26:12Speaker 3: be Nolan Smith and then.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Well, I don't he's yeah, but that makes situational pressure. Sure,
- 26:18Speaker 2: that's not gonna happen. Hunts actually not bad against the run,
- 26:20Speaker 2: but I would agree. I would agree with you where
- 26:22Speaker 2: they could split snaps on Bass downs, true and Bass
- 26:26Speaker 2: I could see that because Jas got much better against
- 26:28Speaker 2: the run. Smith is better. I don't. We talked about it,
- 26:31Speaker 2: how one of the teams so in the Eagles UH
- 26:35Speaker 2: schedule recent years. He basically said, Smith is so good
- 26:40Speaker 2: against the run. We look out for offensive linman's knees
- 26:43Speaker 2: try to cut him. Yeah, and that's how much how
- 26:45Speaker 2: good he is. He's so instinctive with it. But sure.
- 26:49Speaker 1: Go ask Elton Jenkins.
- 26:50Speaker 2: Right, yeah, right, that's another one. But so that's one.
- 26:53Speaker 2: And then could j Ex not Jameson, could could you
- 26:58Speaker 2: Hot Campbell stay healthy because he's had injury prompts throout
- 27:01Speaker 2: his football playing career going back to Alabama and there's
- 27:05Speaker 2: no turning back there. There is no to Kobe Dean here.
- 27:07Speaker 2: It's his job. They're not handing there, there's no competition.
- 27:10Speaker 2: He's the guy, right. He missed a lot of time
- 27:13Speaker 2: last season, so let's see what happens a lot of
- 27:17Speaker 2: live offseason. He took metal reps. Only where's he at
- 27:22Speaker 2: full time job? You know, Vic likes him, don't like him.
- 27:27Speaker 2: It's a first round pick. How he traded up for him.
- 27:29Speaker 2: There's a lot there's a lot of pressure on him
- 27:31Speaker 2: this season.
- 27:32Speaker 1: Listen just to hear you us talk this through. The
- 27:35Speaker 1: one constant that really could.
- 27:37Speaker 3: Threaten this defense if it's not deep enough, is that
- 27:43Speaker 3: guys were talking about coming fro An injury or an
- 27:46Speaker 3: injury concern. Grenard injury concern coming off the shoulder surgery,
- 27:49Speaker 3: Jay and Karp talked about the shoulders, Genti hot Camp
- 27:52Speaker 3: talk about tens left mm hmm, I think a hamstring
- 28:03Speaker 3: and something else. Mccouba did so mc quite a bit.
- 28:06Speaker 1: That's five guys right there. No, it's Smith junior injury concerns.
- 28:11Speaker 1: He's we've seen it for the first two or three
- 28:14Speaker 1: years of his career.
- 28:15Speaker 3: So if there's one thing that really threatens the ability
- 28:18Speaker 3: of this defense to reach its peak, it said, it's
- 28:20Speaker 3: got some guys who have major injury concerns.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Health, You're right, not that Coop come in had some
- 28:28Speaker 2: injury concerns, but after after the hamstering injury which he
- 28:31Speaker 2: came in with, he's you know, he's stayed healthy. And
- 28:35Speaker 2: then finally we talked about it. But just to finish
- 28:38Speaker 2: it off, what's the plant if if Woolan or Quitney
- 28:44Speaker 2: on Mitchell can't play for a little bit, m are
- 28:48Speaker 2: they happy with Jonathan Jones there or just does Vick
- 28:51Speaker 2: will tell you what he thinks by what he does. Yeah,
- 28:54Speaker 2: it's real simple.
- 28:54Speaker 3: Is he he's actually really curious to see who the
- 28:56Speaker 3: who the the non first team, like the pecking order
- 29:01Speaker 3: of corners, like we know Mitchell and and Wollen. Right,
- 29:04Speaker 3: so we'll see that first day of training camp. First team,
- 29:06Speaker 3: all right, second team comes on? Is it Ringo and Bennett?
- 29:09Speaker 3: Is it Jonathan Jones and Ringo? Is it Jones and Bennett?
- 29:13Speaker 3: Is it Matt McWilliams and Jones.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Well, just wait to see what they make a difference
- 29:19Speaker 2: to win. Ringo to be nice Joan, But my god,
- 29:21Speaker 2: by the end of camp, Ringo is part of the
- 29:23Speaker 2: second team. Means Bennett stinks?
- 29:26Speaker 1: Is what it means?
- 29:27Speaker 2: Jones can't play anymore? That like that, that would not
- 29:30Speaker 2: be good. Right last year training camps, it was Ringo
- 29:34Speaker 2: looked like he looked like a guy and I played
- 29:37Speaker 2: Quaudit corner in like ten years.
- 29:38Speaker 1: He just right.
- 29:40Speaker 2: But he's I'll say this about Ringo, He's stayed very healthy.
- 29:44Speaker 2: He's basically an emergency player. Remember the point you made
- 29:49Speaker 2: like five years ago with the offensive line. It's not
- 29:51Speaker 2: a good Who is it they're going against Baltimore? Was it?
- 29:54Speaker 2: Was it?
- 29:55Speaker 1: Jack has to play right, Yeah, it's not a good thing.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Art This is both too had the great start last season.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Jeff said, uh, like four or five years ago, Brett
- 30:05Speaker 2: to If Brett Toath, what is it?
- 30:07Speaker 3: If he's what was the story has to play in
- 30:09Speaker 3: this game, then the Eagles are in a whole lot
- 30:10Speaker 3: of trouble. Raise And I think they were already down
- 30:14Speaker 3: the right guard right because I think Jamon Brown started
- 30:16Speaker 3: a right guard, so I knew they had no depth
- 30:18Speaker 3: at that point. And uh, yeah, this is the dismal
- 30:20Speaker 3: twenty twenty season. If I'm not mistaken, then I said, man,
- 30:23Speaker 3: if Brett Toath has to play any long extended period
- 30:27Speaker 3: of this game, it's going to be bad.
- 30:28Speaker 1: It's your Yeah, I mean, that's it.
- 30:31Speaker 2: So yeah, again to finish us off, to sum it up,
- 30:35Speaker 2: they have more questions than you think. On defense. Yes,
- 30:38Speaker 2: I agree, it has a chance to be elite. It
- 30:40Speaker 2: could also be very average depending on health and player development.
- 30:44Speaker 2: There's a little bit of pressure on these coaches to
- 30:47Speaker 2: bring this thing to the next level. And that's uh,
- 30:50Speaker 2: pretty much what it looks like.
- 30:51Speaker 1: And Maximus Pulley is going to be our our candidate
- 30:54Speaker 1: for ty Kem Darling.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I mentioned it when they sign him. He's a
- 30:58Speaker 2: guy that we're we we we like he could suck. Yeah,
- 31:01Speaker 2: that was what Look, guys don't get drafted for a
- 31:03Speaker 2: reason doesn't mean the team's right.
- 31:05Speaker 4: Right.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Sometimes he's like the Kit, the tall safety from Toledo
- 31:10Speaker 2: never made it. It's not Max and hook. Good call,
- 31:14Speaker 2: great name. Bo Yeah, I was told to stuff. Mm
- 31:18Speaker 2: hmm okay, well again the pull is a way better athlete,
- 31:21Speaker 2: more fluid. But again he wasn't drafted, right, so let's
- 31:25Speaker 2: be careful.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Yes, I agree, I agree? All right, that is it.
- 31:30Speaker 3: We have the last two oh specially real quick, real quick.
- 31:34Speaker 3: This is a huge camp for Jake Elliott. Like he
- 31:36Speaker 3: he can't struggle in camp and the Eagles one can't
- 31:38Speaker 3: feel good about it. If he's struggling in camps. Alrighty
- 31:41Speaker 3: taking the pay cut, there's no competition right now. But
- 31:44Speaker 3: if two weeks into camp they're signing a kicker and
- 31:47Speaker 3: saying it's a competition, that's when it starts to starting
- 31:50Speaker 3: to bite on the fingernails and be like, oh, things
- 31:52Speaker 3: are not good.
- 31:53Speaker 1: You can't convinced me. This is not a huge, huge
- 31:56Speaker 1: camp for Jake ellen It is.
- 31:57Speaker 2: What I do if I'm Jake Gelliant based on what
- 32:02Speaker 2: the the readjustment to his contract was. He took a
- 32:05Speaker 2: million dollar pay cup. But they fully guaranteed it all
- 32:09Speaker 2: I know, I would be the kicker telling you they've
- 32:13Speaker 2: lost a little bit of confidence in him, but fully
- 32:17Speaker 2: guaranteed that means he's not getting cut.
- 32:21Speaker 1: You may have to carry him and still carry another kicker.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Don't They fully guaranteed five million was going to make
- 32:26Speaker 2: six million in total?
- 32:27Speaker 1: Yep.
- 32:28Speaker 2: I was like, man, on your point, why even forget
- 32:31Speaker 2: about that? Why would you not push him? I don't
- 32:34Speaker 2: get that now. Again, they were not a technically or
- 32:38Speaker 2: not to Wednesday when they were the first practice. So
- 32:41Speaker 2: they still can do it. You can still do it
- 32:43Speaker 2: in training camp.
- 32:44Speaker 4: Uh.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Punter's great though Brandon Man was a hell of a
- 32:47Speaker 2: fine by Howie. But Jack Elliott has got to get
- 32:49Speaker 2: himself together. And this is also on their coaches, Tyler
- 32:52Speaker 2: Brown in that group they got to Tyler and his
- 32:55Speaker 2: group did a great job when they got there in
- 32:56Speaker 2: twenty one of of correcting and fixed and getting Jake
- 33:01Speaker 2: realigned man last year, but he what was the number
- 33:05Speaker 2: we had fifteen miss field goals of two seasons something
- 33:07Speaker 2: like that.
- 33:08Speaker 3: He was going to seventy he was his accuracy was
- 33:11Speaker 3: down to like seventy six percent. I mean this is
- 33:13Speaker 3: a guy who was at ninety six two years ago.
- 33:16Speaker 1: That's a huge drop. I mean, seventy one for seven
- 33:21Speaker 1: from fifty and beyond I believe last year. I mean,
- 33:23Speaker 1: just listen.
- 33:25Speaker 3: If you see a kicker in camp at any time,
- 33:28Speaker 3: doesn't mean that guy's going to make the team. But
- 33:29Speaker 3: then if he's on the practice squad come week one,
- 33:32Speaker 3: week two, then you know, yeah, they.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Are really really concerned.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:36Speaker 1: And by the way, rookie long snapper, undrafted rookie long.
- 33:38Speaker 2: Snapper rock now yeah, yeah for now Florida. Yep, all right, cool.
- 33:43Speaker 3: Definitely had to end it on that. That's a big
- 33:45Speaker 3: thing for this camp. That's gonna do it for this
