- 0:00Boom, there we go. We are live, you are live.
- 0:03It's the Rick Mass show. It's been a while.
- 0:05I am Charlie Marlowe, that is the great Rick Mass.
- 0:09I want to start with this though 'cause I think it's funny.
- 0:11Let's have a contest of of who's living in a colder area.
- 0:16I live in basically St. Louis, MO, specifically
- 0:20Kirkwood, Glendale. You're in what rock?
- 0:24Rockbridge Baths, Virginia, Correct.
- 0:26That is correct. OK, and I'm going to show you
- 0:29proof right now. Here's my weather app.
- 0:32Zero Baby. Oh shit.
- 0:35Zero. What do you got?
- 0:37No, you got me beat. You got me beat, dude.
- 0:41You've got me beat. Where am we at?
- 0:4514. 14 in Rockbridge Baths. Still pretty bad.
- 0:50Hey, wait a minute now let me show you.
- 0:51Let me show you where my daughter is.
- 0:53OK, Katie, check this one out. -4 Where's Avon?
- 1:00Is that Colorado? That is Vail Co.
- 1:03Yeah, that's where she's working right now.
- 1:05So. But I mean, when I tell her all
- 1:07the time, why in the hell would anybody live out there other
- 1:09than skiing? I mean.
- 1:10So they had like the other day, Charlie, they were like 8 below
- 1:130, 7 below 0 and it had like 18 inches of snow and they had been
- 1:18under a they had been under a winter storm advisory or winter
- 1:22storm watch. Man, if we're 8 below here, drop
- 1:25this bass in 18 inch snow. It's not only a winter storm
- 1:28warning, it's a winter storm Armageddon.
- 1:32It's just different. And those folks out there, they
- 1:34they just drive and live in snow all the time.
- 1:36But where you're at, it's cold. That's just that's just
- 1:39ridiculous. That's ridiculous.
- 1:41Yeah, I walked out. I walked out to to warm the
- 1:45truck up and it was 1 and it, it was a little different.
- 1:48Like I've lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
- 1:50I grew up in Toledo, OH. That's why I'm wearing the Ohio
- 1:53State celebrating. We can get to that later.
- 1:56But if it's 012 degrees, I mean that that punches you right in
- 2:01the face the second you walk outside.
- 2:04Hey Charlie, you ever been snow skiing?
- 2:06I have just just a couple times and I actually have not been
- 2:10skiing I think since my senior year in high school, which would
- 2:14have been like 2000. Yeah, let me tell you how I
- 2:18learned how to ski right when I started, when I came into the
- 2:21Dillard family and I started dating my bride, Sharon, 450
- 2:25years ago, dude. And her her parents would go
- 2:29skiing in a place called Canane Valley, West Virginia, which is
- 2:32an hour from here. And you go a little bit further
- 2:34West of us, a snowshoe. So pretty decent scam.
- 2:37And not like Northeast and Colorado.
- 2:39But anyhow. So I'm a 16 year old kid and we
- 2:42go out there for the weekend to ski.
- 2:44We rented this cabin. We rent these cabins and we get
- 2:47up to go skiing and I've never even seen him ski or anything
- 2:50like that. I'm 16 year old, years old.
- 2:52It's like 6:30 in the morning. I get up, we eat breakfast with
- 2:55my father or future father-in-law.
- 2:57He sits down a glass. He fills this glass up with Old
- 3:00Taylor bourbon, right. He says, here it drink.
- 3:03Yes. I'm like, OK, so I'd sit there
- 3:06and jug that glass of Old Taylor, Old Taylor bourbon down.
- 3:10So then the next thing I know, he wraps his flask around my
- 3:13neck, right? The thing goes running Nick the
- 3:15flask. He fills that thing up with Old
- 3:17Taylor bourbon. He says no, just sip this on the
- 3:20way to the ski slope. Just keeps dude, when we got to
- 3:23the we get to to the slope when we get there and we get my skis,
- 3:28the boots and all that all when I get to ride that gauntlet up
- 3:31to the top. When I get to the top, Charlie,
- 3:33I can't even stand up, man, right.
- 3:35And I honest to gosh, I, I, I don't know how many maybe first
- 3:40four or five runs. I'm just on my ass slide down
- 3:43the slide down the mountain, right.
- 3:45I'm just, you know, I'm kind of pretty much drunk or tipsy and
- 3:50and, you know, probably for four or five runs.
- 3:53I'm dude by the time that afternoon's over with, I'm
- 3:57skiing that whole damn mountain. I got it figured out and I'm
- 3:59scared of sobered up. But that's how I was taught to
- 4:04to ski by future father-in-law decided to get me, you know,
- 4:08inebriated and put me up on the mountain, right.
- 4:11It was all over. Everybody's laughing and
- 4:13carrying on about. Yeah, well, that's how you got
- 4:15to teach these young ones because they'll go down through
- 4:17there and they'll try to ski and they don't know what they're
- 4:19doing and they'll get hurt. Get them drunk like that.
- 4:21And they they don't, they don't get hurt.
- 4:25Have you ever heard anybody learn how to ski like that?
- 4:27No, probably not. I haven't.
- 4:29But Speaking of getting hurt, so again, I think I went skiing
- 4:33maybe 2-3 times. I went snowboarding once again
- 4:36my senior year of high school. It might have been, it might
- 4:41have been 25 years ago, basically right around now.
- 4:44I, I think it was the holiday, I think it was either Martin
- 4:47Luther King Day or President's Day.
- 4:50One of those Mondays we were off back in the day and I broke my
- 4:53collarbone. I broke my left collarbone when
- 4:57I was snowboarding. And so I have not, I've not been
- 5:00on a mountain since except for some sledding with my kids.
- 5:03I, I would do it again, but it just, we're not really like a
- 5:06skiing family. So it just kind of never came
- 5:08about after that. Yeah, well, you know, it's fun
- 5:12if you don't get hurt. Actually, Katie, as you know, is
- 5:15out in Vail, Co working at Steadman Clinic in a medical
- 5:17residency. This is her third year.
- 5:19She's supposed to come home, I think finally next year.
- 5:22But anyhow, she she tore up her knee the first year out there.
- 5:24She, you know, she was skiing and she blew her knee out.
- 5:27And actually the, the doctor she works with now is a doctor that
- 5:31fixed her knee. So.
- 5:32But anyhow, another story for another day.
- 5:35All right, well, hey, let's get to the to the NASCAR storylines.
- 5:38We haven't done a show for a while.
- 5:40So people the people want to know Rick mass opinion on a lot
- 5:43of these things. And I figured let's just work,
- 5:45let's work backwards from the most recent type stuff.
- 5:49So I think it was what last week you got Dale Earnhardt Junior
- 5:53Junior Motorsports entering a car in the Cup Series for the
- 5:57first time ever. Pretty big names.
- 6:00You got Dale Junior. You got Chris Stapleton on the
- 6:03car with the Travelers Whiskey. Justin Allgeier will try to
- 6:07qualify for the Daytona 500. That's that's pretty big news.
- 6:11What do you think of that? Yeah, Excuse me, Charles.
- 6:15Yeah, it is. And you know, man, we just, you
- 6:18know what? Honestly, past that, the sport
- 6:22needs junior, right? The sport needs Chris, the Chris
- 6:26Stapletons of the, of the world. It it, it, it the, the sport
- 6:30just needs those things at this time.
- 6:32And I that's the part that that I find intriguing, or that's the
- 6:37part that I like about it. I mean, yeah, it's cool.
- 6:39Junior Motorsports is in everybody's been waiting on
- 6:41Junior Motorsports to do a cup car.
- 6:43You know, everybody's won in Junior Motorsports to do a cup
- 6:45car. And honestly, Kelly and Dale
- 6:48junior and y'all do this. Our sport needs a junior
- 6:52Motorsports cup team or multiple teams.
- 6:56And but, but, but I know you guys right and I know it's got
- 6:59to be right and the money's got to be right because we're not
- 7:01going to go broke. You know, we're not going to
- 7:03lose everything we've got trying to run cup just just say we're a
- 7:06cup team. But it's just I, it's just to
- 7:09me, it's to be the, the, the big number one thing.
- 7:12It's just a, it's just a cool deal.
- 7:13It's a it's a thing that our sport desperately needs.
- 7:16I think at this point, because junior Motorsports and and Dale
- 7:20Junior, I mean, they're the that name of whether you love him or
- 7:23hate him or whatever the deal is in whether he wants this
- 7:26attention or doesn't want it or whatever.
- 7:29You know, he's a big, big, big part of our sport.
- 7:31He's a big part of the future of our sport.
- 7:33You know, if he wasn't here, if Dale when he retired and he
- 7:35didn't have his show, didn't have his race team, you know,
- 7:38that's a big ass void. And I'm not sure who would feel
- 7:41and, and anytime those guys do something, you know, a, a, a
- 7:45note, then it, it, it creates a big splash.
- 7:48I mean, you know, that's the biggest splash that's been
- 7:50created, you know, other than than what we're talking about in
- 7:53a little while with Elio and Mike Wallace.
- 7:55But that's a big splash for this sport.
- 7:57And, and, and we just, you know, anything we can do to elevate
- 8:00those guys, I think it's great. Yeah, of course.
- 8:03Chris Stapleton coming in. What is it?
- 8:06Is it, what's the let's see, what is a whiskey brand out of a
- 8:08Travelers? Yeah.
- 8:10Travelers, travelers, I'll look it up.
- 8:13Oh man, I'm not sure which one it is.
- 8:15My family knows about it, we've talked about it.
- 8:17My kids and all but him staple him coming in with his deal and
- 8:21being part of it, being a part of it with Junior Motorsports,
- 8:24Dale Earnhardt, Kelly and that whole group.
- 8:26It just it it it makes for a traveler, interesting traveler.
- 8:30Yeah, traveler makes for a very interesting storyline and
- 8:32something to talk about for us. But my, again, my main thing
- 8:35with this is we just need, we just need Junior in our sport.
- 8:38We need him front and center in our sport.
- 8:41How about if I throw this question to you, do you think
- 8:44you can? You can say, and and this isn't
- 8:47necessarily a good thing, but I think it's a a fair question.
- 8:51You think it's fair to say that the biggest stars in NASCAR
- 8:54right now are not the drivers and its owners, It's it's Dale
- 8:58Earnhardt junior and Michael Jordan.
- 9:00Is that fair to say, you think? I think it is.
- 9:03I think it is and and and how do why, how did we get here?
- 9:06You know, I have this conversation Charlie with more
- 9:08fans. I I was at a restaurant
- 9:10yesterday. The guy walked up.
- 9:12We're just talking. He was probably, I would say
- 9:15early 60s, late 50s and had this very same conversation.
- 9:19And I was talking about, you know, how in our day, the, the,
- 9:21the sport, the drivers were such heroes, man, you know, and
- 9:25everybody could relate. You could relate to Earnhardt,
- 9:27you could relate to Harry Gant and you could relate, you know,
- 9:29to Sterling. You could just relate to these
- 9:31drivers. And these guys are heroes.
- 9:32Hell, they were my heroes, right?
- 9:34And, you know, we, we somehow or another, we've lost that.
- 9:39I'm not taking anything away from the guys that's in our
- 9:41sport now. They're all very talented and
- 9:43all that, you know, But you know, and I have my reasons for
- 9:47why it's like that, why these guys are like that.
- 9:49But, you know, what do we do to change that?
- 9:51And do we need to change that? I mean, you know, back in the
- 9:55early part, if you go back 50s and 60s and through the 70s, you
- 10:00know, and really some some through the 80s, everybody was a
- 10:03Ford guy or, or a Dodge Chrysler guy or a Plymouth guy, right?
- 10:07It seemed like, it seemed like there's all those always this
- 10:11argument, you know, I'm pulling for Petty because he's Mopar,
- 10:15right? Or I'm pulling for Pearson
- 10:18because he's Ford Mercury. And so they had this argument
- 10:22or, or the fans or the, or the fans for the manufacturer or,
- 10:26or, or the for the driver. Well, I can tell you by the time
- 10:29I got to the sport, it had swapped if it was for the car or
- 10:32the team, the manufacturer, it had swapped to the driver.
- 10:35Because about the whole tenure of my existence in Cup racing,
- 10:39it was all about the driver, the manufacturer.
- 10:41Yeah, that was still important, still important part of it, but
- 10:43it kind of the driver became more important in in the
- 10:46conversations and stuff. And now, now it, you know, we
- 10:50don't really have the manufacturer being other people
- 10:53like a fuss about Toyota. That's all they wanted these
- 10:56fuss about Toyota, you know, being here because it's a
- 10:59foreign company and it's a lot of own truths about that.
- 11:01They take, they take some criticism they shouldn't take, I
- 11:04think. But then then you have they're
- 11:08good, They're good. Sharon, my wife, Sharon, she's
- 11:11walking up the steps here. Hello, Sharon.
- 11:13She's walking up the steps doing something interrupting my
- 11:16podcast with her beauty. I can't keep my eyes off for
- 11:19when she walks by. So about that.
- 11:21That ran her out of the room. OK, but anyhow, then we've but
- 11:25but some were Charlie, we've lost some of the the appeals to
- 11:29the manufacturer, although it's still there.
- 11:33But then we've also lost some of the appeal of the drivers being
- 11:36heroes to the fans, although some of it's still there.
- 11:39Right. So to your original question,
- 11:43yeah, I mean, I think, you know, and, and I don't know what we do
- 11:47to to kind of get back to that Charlie.
- 11:49It's it's almost like, and I, and I know this for a fact
- 11:52because I dealt with these guys when I was around thousands and
- 11:55thousands of fans every week and doing appearances.
- 11:59These drivers that I raced against were worshipped.
- 12:03They were hero. I mean, the fans worshipped them
- 12:06like heroes. I, I witnessed them, I watched
- 12:09it and, and I'm not talking about a group of fans.
- 12:13You go to a crowd of fans and there'd be, if there's 500 fans
- 12:16there, they'd be like, you know, 20 of them just being fanatical.
- 12:20What you, what you always hear. I'm talking about first 500 fans
- 12:22standing there. All 500 were fanatical, right?
- 12:27I mean, it's, it's here, came here comes Mark, Mark, walk
- 12:29through the crowd. Everybody's crazy, you know,
- 12:33the, the one that gets the most, if you go to these places, most
- 12:36of the time, you know who it is, their action.
- 12:38It's the king. Everybody, when the king walks
- 12:42through that garage there, everybody knows who the king is,
- 12:44right? And, and he's so approachable.
- 12:46He'll, he'll, he'll, he'll do the autographs for the body.
- 12:49And, you know, if you look, we see so many, so many stories and
- 12:54things being written about the guys, the drivers, and they talk
- 12:57about the some of the older guys.
- 12:59It's that's not in a sport that's gone like a Tony Stewart,
- 13:02right? Some of those folks and they're,
- 13:04they're this revered during the way they're talked about and and
- 13:08mentioned and all, and it's like those guys are talking about
- 13:11more than the guys that we have coming up.
- 13:14And you know, I don't know what we do.
- 13:16I don't know what we do to fix that.
- 13:18And I'm not again, I'm not taking away anything from this
- 13:20guy. These these guys now they're
- 13:22very talented. They've all got personalities,
- 13:24you know, but it but there's a there's a disconnect.
- 13:27There's a disconnect somewhere between these drivers and the
- 13:30fans that we used to have right in the in the 90s that that that
- 13:35connection is not. It's just it's not there.
- 13:38It's not there. And I'm not sure in today's
- 13:41media world with social media and with everything that goes
- 13:45on, how we do that because the the, the drivers of my day, they
- 13:51were put, we were put out there enough for the fans to
- 13:54understand. Well, that guy's a hero, right?
- 13:57But then we didn't have the social media and we didn't have
- 14:00all the things that would go past that with each driver and
- 14:04maybe start pointed out some of that driver's negatives, right?
- 14:08I mean, yeah, they're heroes. But let me tell you something,
- 14:10man, all these guys, we all had our flaws, right?
- 14:12We all had our flaws. So, you know, if you dig deeper
- 14:15into them, maybe you wouldn't like the guys butts, even though
- 14:19not really, because they're all pretty decent people.
- 14:22But Charlie, what the hell was your original question?
- 14:26The original question. About I don't even know what I'm
- 14:29talking about. No, no, no.
- 14:30It was about you make the case that the owners with the Dale
- 14:33Earnhardt junior and Michael Jordan are bigger stars than the
- 14:37drivers. And then so let's let's spin it
- 14:39forward a bit. I do think this is cool and this
- 14:42this encompasses both an owner and drivers.
- 14:46I think what's really cool for racing overall, but it helps
- 14:50NASCAR, even though it's not technically NASCAR is what's
- 14:53going on in the offseason here with some of the dirt racing
- 14:58with also what Dale Junior did with the Bud Red 8 car back in
- 15:03South Carolina is they are making racing AA12 month sport,
- 15:09right? Like usually, I mean, racing
- 15:10NASCAR is a long season. It's a good what, nine months?
- 15:14But if you think about it, I mean, one of the biggest stories
- 15:16of last year after the season, Dale Earnhardt Junior runs that
- 15:21red Bud 8 car, what at Florence. And then look, you had the Tulsa
- 15:25Shootout, great finish between Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell.
- 15:30You had the Chili Bowl, Kyle Larson wins his third Chili
- 15:34Bowl. You had Kyle Busch there, Ricky
- 15:36Stenhouse Junior. So I do think it's pretty cool
- 15:38that you're getting because of the dirt racing, there's a lot
- 15:42of fans watching flow racing people that maybe weren't in the
- 15:46dirt. So you do have the superstar
- 15:48drivers continuing to promote Motorsports even though it's not
- 15:52NASCAR. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:55That, you know, that that goes back to one of my scenes that I,
- 15:58I, I think I told Lisa or Jim or somebody here a year or two ago,
- 16:02man, you know, when we get when we came through and I keep
- 16:05saying when we came through, but you got to quantify that with
- 16:09when we came through. It exploded, Charlie.
- 16:11Something happened. Whether whether what we were
- 16:13doing is right or wrong, I don't know.
- 16:15But I watched it when I got out of the sport, When I got out of
- 16:18the sport, man, you know, you couldn't, you couldn't get a
- 16:21ticket to a, to a event or sold out.
- 16:23But one of the things that we used to do, you know, especially
- 16:27with me with Skull and then with Remington, you know, if we were
- 16:30there Friday and Saturday and Sunday, I guarantee you on
- 16:33Fridays, 90% of the drivers were some were within a 50 mile
- 16:38radius of that racetrack doing some kind of event or that be at
- 16:41a Saturday night local dirt track, right, or a little
- 16:45asphalt track or some big community fair deal or whatever
- 16:49drivers were out there and the drivers not doing it because
- 16:54that's what they wanted to do. They were doing it because
- 16:56that's what the sponsors at NASCAR required.
- 16:59Man, we had to go out and do all that stuff.
- 17:01And you know, if you, if you live or within a 50 mile radius
- 17:05to the racetrack that weekend, you had a chance to see half the
- 17:09drivers in the field because they were going to be somewhere
- 17:11doing all grass. And that, that that fan made
- 17:14that connection with that driver, right?
- 17:17And you do this every every weekend for a day or two with
- 17:21all the drivers, every weekend, all year long.
- 17:25And you multiply that by year after year after year, right?
- 17:29You not only do you keep your fan base going, but you grow fan
- 17:33base goes, I'm gonna take off. Every time we went to those
- 17:35deals and the fans come up, guess what they had with them?
- 17:38Two or three kids hanging off their shoulders, right?
- 17:40And those kids became fans, right?
- 17:43So that, that's one thing I think the driver's do.
- 17:45And then with these guys doing this, this, this stuff like with
- 17:49the chili belt, all that stuff that's going on with the dirt
- 17:51racing and they're not doing the little the show in Florence, all
- 17:54that stuff makes a big difference, man.
- 17:56It makes more difference, I think, than what anybody
- 17:58realizes. All right.
- 18:00How about Mike Wallace? There was the announcement,
- 18:04maybe, I don't know, a month or so ago he was going to run the
- 18:07Daytona 500 or or attempt to qualify.
- 18:11And a couple weeks later NASCAR comes out and they say basically
- 18:16he wasn't approved for inactivity.
- 18:19My take is, look, I know he's 65, hasn't raced in a while, but
- 18:24also you have to qualify. So to me, let the man qualify.
- 18:28That's how I feel. What do you think?
- 18:30Let the man attempt to. There's so many angles to this,
- 18:33Charlie. You know, the problem I'm having
- 18:35with it is I, I, I spoke with Mike, I spoke with Mike at
- 18:39length before he got the call that he wasn't, he couldn't do
- 18:44it right. This was after the fact, after
- 18:46he announced it and all. I called him, we talked a while
- 18:48very congratulatory because Mike, you know, it's a different
- 18:51deal with Mike. I mean, known him all these
- 18:53years and he, you know, he lost Carla back in the year.
- 18:56So, you know, as as brother Mike Kenny's pointed out on this show
- 18:59many times, you know, Mike's kind of looked for something,
- 19:01right? He's a little bit of a lost
- 19:02soul, right, with his wife being gone.
- 19:04So this kind of feel that in Mike's deal was, you know what
- 19:08he told me? He said, you know, I'm looking
- 19:09forward to Bosch, Rick. I said what he said having my
- 19:11family down there, having my family out on Pit Rd. having all
- 19:16the family there and taking a picture beside my race car with
- 19:19me, you know, before the start of the Daytona 500.
- 19:22That's what that's what he was looking most forward to.
- 19:26Is that deal, right? The the deal that came down on
- 19:30him man, you know, I don't know. I mean, it's it's, it's, it's,
- 19:36you know, did he talk to the wrong person to start with?
- 19:39And he got the yes. You know, if he hadn't got, if
- 19:41he hadn't got the yes to begin with, then it wouldn't be such a
- 19:44big deal, right? But he got the yes from someone
- 19:48that is above in the structure of NASCAR.
- 19:52He's up there. They're above the people that
- 19:54made the decision. The way I understand it, you get
- 19:57the composition, competition side and the hierarchy of
- 20:01NASCAR, you know, and that. That's something that's a little
- 20:04bit different than our day. In our day, if you go to Bill
- 20:08France, Bill France Junior and ask him, can I drive up here?
- 20:13Can I drive this race? Bill Junior says, yeah, we'll
- 20:15let you. Well, the case closed, right?
- 20:18Nobody's going to overrule Bill France Junior OK, although Mike
- 20:24didn't talk to Jim France let me back that up.
- 20:27But he did talk to somebody high up in in the organization and we
- 20:29won't talk about names because as he's doing that, but you
- 20:33know, it, it pointed out a little bit of a disconnect or a
- 20:37power who's in charge of what, you know, the competition decide
- 20:41and the competition side, then the executive side and all that.
- 20:45You know, I think that just gives you an example of, you
- 20:49know, some of the separations within the, within the, the
- 20:52corporate structure of our sport.
- 20:54I think it kind of, it kind of answers that question a little
- 20:57bit if you're trying to figure some of that out.
- 20:58But you know, the, the bad news, I just feel I just truly, truly,
- 21:02truly feel bad for Mike, right? I, that's, that's on a personal
- 21:06level. Now on a competition side,
- 21:08Charlie, you know, the way I looked at it, Mike, you know,
- 21:12800 starts and all the races and, and I don't give a damn
- 21:16what you say when you say when you're 65 years old, your
- 21:19reflexes are not as fast. They're just not.
- 21:24But, but see here there's this crossover point.
- 21:27And as a race car driver, when you get when you're young, you
- 21:30got no experience. You don't know what the hell
- 21:32you're doing was you go through life and racing you, you, you
- 21:36get better and better and better at everything, right?
- 21:38You're just better because you're racing more.
- 21:40You get more experience. At some point the age, your
- 21:44body, your age of your body kicks in and your reflexes start
- 21:48slowing down, right? Well, then those two lines, how
- 21:52you do this kind of do this, those two lines intersect
- 21:56somewhere right where your reflexes are slowing down, but
- 22:00your experience is still going up.
- 22:02So totally, you're still a good driver, you know, and as age
- 22:06goes on and the reflexes get worse and worse and worse and
- 22:08the spirit starts slowing down, then that whole overall thing
- 22:11starts coming down. Poor Mike Wallace is on that on
- 22:15that crossover on the on that chart.
- 22:17I have no idea. But you know, Daytona Talladega
- 22:22is one of those deals were his experience and his dollies and
- 22:28and and Mike was one of the good ones.
- 22:29He was one of the good ones on superspeedways.
- 22:31He could, you know, he was good with drafting.
- 22:33He's just very good with that. Some guys are and some guys
- 22:36aren't. He's one of the good ones.
- 22:38You know, was he was he old enough to the experience level
- 22:41that that that, you know, wouldn't overcome his age?
- 22:45I don't know, you know, but they put it out like he's not in
- 22:48competition. I think somebody said, you know,
- 22:51Kenny Schrader right now, 70 years old, if he wanted to come
- 22:53back and run the Daytona 500, they let him run because he
- 22:56hasn't run NASCAR, but he runs the dirt tracks every single
- 22:59week or 8080 races a year. So if that in fact is the case,
- 23:03then fine. You know, same way with our boss
- 23:06Kenny Wallace. If he wanted to race, you know,
- 23:08they feel like he they let him race because of his experience.
- 23:10If Mike could have been out there on a couple race tracks
- 23:12somewhere running something, you know, would NASCAR have let him
- 23:15race? Probably so, probably so, so.
- 23:18But the other thing too, Charlie, about this whole deal,
- 23:21this is the first time this has happened.
- 23:22You know, we've never, we've never turned anybody down
- 23:25because of their age that I know of.
- 23:26Maybe we have, we just didn't know about it or hear about it.
- 23:29But you know, Morgan was a good, great, good example.
- 23:32Morgan Shepherd raced, you know, he's older than Mike is now and
- 23:36he he kept racing, but he was there about every week or two
- 23:39right races. So, you know, they let him do
- 23:41that. Charlie, I I don't know, it's
- 23:42just just a tough situation for Mike.
- 23:44I hate it for him. I understand his side.
- 23:47I understand NASCAR's side. But here's the other thing,
- 23:49Charlie, that again, again, I don't know how it always friggin
- 23:53happens with NASCAR, but there's always this timing issue, man,
- 23:57right? There's always this timing issue
- 24:00with NASCAR. It just blows up right in her
- 24:02face. Because at the same time we're
- 24:04telling Mike Wallace and Kate race, we're letting Elio, Elio
- 24:08Castanavis race, right? And hadn't been in one of these
- 24:11cars, but he has been in a race car, right?
- 24:15So all that does is is gives fans the fuel for the fire.
- 24:19And I've been reading it for two weeks, right?
- 24:21And I don't know, it just seems like we're always shooting
- 24:24yourself in the foot with time. There's always these timing
- 24:27things that goes on. Just it just kills us.
- 24:29But you know, it is what it is, dude.
- 24:31Yeah, and and and maybe you and I disagree.
- 24:34We've talked about this before, but I but I do think even
- 24:36controversy, it's the old, all publicity is good publicity.
- 24:41Even if people are arguing and debating, it's, it's good for
- 24:44the sport. And you bring up Elio.
- 24:45That's where I was going to go next.
- 24:46So perfect timing there. You also brought up Ken Schrader
- 24:50and Kenny Wallace and I'm I'm kind of stealing, I'm kind of
- 24:53stealing Schrader's line here because when he said this, I
- 24:56agreed with them on Herman Schrader a week or so ago when
- 25:00they talked about this. So basically my opinion is I I
- 25:04love the idea of having the 41st driver for a world class driver
- 25:09to come in because I think it's good for the sport.
- 25:12If it's going to be down the road, whoever the hell it is,
- 25:14somebody from IndyCar, Max Verstappen, I think that's good
- 25:17for the sport. But what Schrader said was it's
- 25:21the Daytona 500. It's already the biggest stock
- 25:25car race in the world. So for me, like I'm I'm not mad
- 25:29by the way, that Elio's going to be in this race doesn't bother
- 25:32me at all. But I also think maybe for some
- 25:35of the non crown jewel events, for the non playoff races where
- 25:39you get into kind of the dog days of the NASCAR season,
- 25:43that's where I feel like a story like this can be good for the
- 25:45sport. You probably don't need it for
- 25:48the Great American race where everybody's watching the Daytona
- 25:52500 anyway. Again, I'm not complaining, but
- 25:55Daytona doesn't need anything extra in my opinion.
- 25:58No, no, it doesn't. It doesn't.
- 26:01And I don't know, man. It's just to try not to stray
- 26:06away from what your point is here, But it's just to me, it's
- 26:10just so weird that they would make this rule.
- 26:13I mean, you know, they would have never ever, ever, ever made
- 26:18a, a, a not rule. But you know, it is a rule like
- 26:22this in the past, right? It's it's but this, this rule of
- 26:27giving what's it called again? The what?
- 26:29Well, it's a special exemption, but isn't it?
- 26:31Is it OEP? Whatever it is, it's a special.
- 26:35Whatever it is, OEP, whatever they call it, you know, it's
- 26:39just, I don't know, that one to me just strikes me as weird.
- 26:42I mean, I get it. Again, I get it.
- 26:45And this goes towards what we talk about all the time here,
- 26:48Charlie. And that's the show, right?
- 26:51This is the show what we're what we're trying to do with with our
- 26:54show to make our show more interested in the pods.
- 26:58So you know, I don't know it's about our site isn't good.
- 27:02No, it's open exemption, provisional OEP.
- 27:07OEPOEPOE. Greater OEPOEPOEPOEP, right?
- 27:16We're going to talk a lot about the OP as as the year goes on.
- 27:19We're going to see how this works out.
- 27:20But for Aileo, for Castanos to be in the race, it's a good
- 27:24deal. It's a good deal for our sport
- 27:26for him to be in the race. It was a good deal for our sport
- 27:28when AJ Foyt would run, right? It's a good deal when Mario
- 27:32Andretti would run. And we're talking we're talking
- 27:3560s and then the 1960s when those guys did that big name
- 27:40from IndyCar world running in the Daytona 500, big deal.
- 27:44And the hell they won the fight or AJ won it.
- 27:46Mario won it. I doubt a Leo win it, but he
- 27:48might. But you know, I'm with you.
- 27:50We don't really need you don't need the extra hype for that.
- 27:53Keep it, try try to keep it pure, you know.
- 27:55But you know, the race, you go somewhere, go to Kansas or
- 27:58wherever you go. Well, hell, you can't say that
- 28:00because that's they fill that track up.
- 28:02But yeah, I agree with all that. And let let me ask you, because
- 28:06I think I could be wrong. I think I kind of know sometimes
- 28:10how you how you think about some of these things just because
- 28:13we've done a show now for a year.
- 28:14It is part of your thinking also that you've always said when you
- 28:18raced you didn't have a safety net, right?
- 28:21And you had to qualify to get in.
- 28:22Now it's different now with the charters, but you're letting
- 28:25this dude in, whereas back in the day you guys had to grind it
- 28:29out just to get in the show. Yeah, and that's what makes it
- 28:33tough for no veteran like me, right?
- 28:36But you lived your whole career fighting that battle.
- 28:40And you watched other teams drivers go home.
- 28:43You watched, you watched Fortune 500 companies go home with a
- 28:47suite full, a suite full of executives of that Fortune 500
- 28:51company stepping in the suite on Sunday to watch the race.
- 28:55And their car didn't qualify for the race.
- 28:57Dude, you know, I mean, I watched that.
- 29:00I witnessed that as a part of all that.
- 29:02And it was a struggle, you know, to make sure you were in that
- 29:05show that week and and that that went on a lot.
- 29:08And, you know, now, but just having somebody say, well, you
- 29:12know, we like this guy. He's, you know, everybody in the
- 29:15world knows him. He gets, he gets 10,000 hits on
- 29:18social media every three hours. You know, we need him in this
- 29:21race, right? You know, and that's basically
- 29:23what it really comes down to, you know, and, and I get it.
- 29:26It drives the ratings. I mean, so much about our sport
- 29:28is TV ratings and things like that drive our ratings.
- 29:31So, you know, if you love our sport, Charlie, you got to
- 29:35understand what drives the sport anymore, right?
- 29:38And you got to understand that things that that used to drive
- 29:41the sport, maybe not necessarily drive it with that highest
- 29:45percentage as it did when we were there, maybe other things
- 29:48drive it now. And that's what we're looking
- 29:50at. I don't know.
- 29:51Well, you know what I need to do, dude.
- 29:53I need to go to Daytona or Charlotte and I need to go into
- 29:55their competition slash marketing side and just spend a
- 30:00week, you know, just spend a week listening to meetings and
- 30:03and knowing, knowing what you know, knowing what they are
- 30:07NASCAR, somebody in, in, in marketing or, or the competition
- 30:11marketing side. Invite me down.
- 30:12Invite me down. And honestly, I won't say a
- 30:14word. I won't say anything right other
- 30:17than try to help you guys. But I would really, really,
- 30:20really, really, truly love to understand, you know, where
- 30:24they're at with everything, with the decisions they make and why
- 30:27they make. And we're on the outside, you
- 30:29reacted to the decision that they make, right?
- 30:32And I'm not sure that all the times that they get the message
- 30:36out why they make decisions they make.
- 30:38I'm not sure that it's really pointed out in late terms for
- 30:41fans to understand. So I need to be invited in a
- 30:44couple. I need to be invited to this, to
- 30:47this and just sit down and listen and, and, and formulate
- 30:50in my mind, you know, where are we at and where are we trying to
- 30:53get to? I mean, they're all doing what
- 30:55they think's best for the sport. We always, always did that.
- 30:58But the decisions are made and it makes it hard for fans to
- 31:01understand some of this stuff. You know, the fans get feel like
- 31:04you're a little bit disenchanted because something comes out, but
- 31:07it's not explained properly, right?
- 31:09And there's a little disconnect there.
- 31:12I can help with that. There you go NASCAR invite Rick
- 31:16Mast to the the marketing meetings I'd like to go to
- 31:20actually, if NASCAR wants to invite me as well, I'm down.
- 31:24So OK, we also have the, we'll call it the Kyle Larson rule.
- 31:28And by the way, before we move on, I just want to say I do
- 31:32think it's cool. I think it's cool to have the
- 31:34special exemptions. The OEPI just don't think you
- 31:37need them. You obviously don't need them
- 31:38for the playoff races and you don't need them for the crown
- 31:41jewel events. You need them for some of these
- 31:43others. I think that's where I would
- 31:44use, but let's move on to the the waiver situation.
- 31:48We'll call it the Kyle Larson rule.
- 31:50I think this is pretty fair because I understand last year
- 31:54fans, if they were pissed, if they go to the Coke 600, you had
- 31:57the weather. You want to see Kyle Larson,
- 32:00right? You pay money to see Kyle Larson
- 32:02because of the weather. You didn't get to see him race.
- 32:04Then they call that race. Not really Kyle Larson's fault,
- 32:07but he also he made the choice. He could have left Indy, but
- 32:11you're not going to leave the Indy 500.
- 32:13But the fact that what these guys now won't have the playoff
- 32:16points, I think that's a pretty fairway to handle this.
- 32:20I want to see drivers continue to attempt the double.
- 32:24But I do think it's OK to punish him a bit because this is
- 32:27NASCAR. This is this is NASCAR.
- 32:30NASCAR shouldn't go out of its way to promote IndyCar, even
- 32:32though it's it's good for racing overall.
- 32:35But still, you have to look out for your own league.
- 32:40Oh yeah, and, and Rick Hendrick kind of opened the door on this
- 32:44Charlie last year when it was all said and done, when when the
- 32:48the the Coke 600 was over with, when they were interviewing,
- 32:51Rick Hendrick said, well, you know, if we do this again for
- 32:54sure, excuse me, The Coke 600 is the main thing.
- 33:00If we're if we're leading the race at Indy 500 and it's
- 33:03raining delayed or whatever, he'll have to come in and we'll
- 33:06have to get on a helicopter and come back.
- 33:08So Rick, either the new either new then what NASCAR was
- 33:12thinking about the future or he just put that statement out
- 33:14there. So you know, you know, you
- 33:18you've got to do it. I mean, you're one or the other.
- 33:20I mean, you're the the two premier Motorsports leagues in
- 33:23our country, right? And you and you, you just, you
- 33:26know, it's just circumstances with a, with these races away
- 33:30they go. And really, you know, the Indy
- 33:32500 hasn't been rain delayed that many times over the years.
- 33:36So you know, it's, it shouldn't be that big a deal all the time,
- 33:39although last year pointed out the flaw in it.
- 33:41So you know, if they if they decide to do that and they go up
- 33:44there, man, hey, think about that, Charlie, I'm leading the
- 33:47Indy 500. I got 5th.
- 33:50What hell, 10 laps to go, right? But I have to pit now to get on
- 33:56the helicopter in order to get to Charlotte in time to start
- 34:00the race, right? What you going to do, man?
- 34:04Right. Like, oh, who was it?
- 34:06Jim Brown and said that to Richard Pryor that time.
- 34:10What you going to do, boy, what you going to do, right?
- 34:13You have to you have to go back and look that all up.
- 34:15What you going to do, man, that would be so tough.
- 34:20But if the rules there, it's there and you don't have to
- 34:23worry about it. You don't have to certificate
- 34:25about it. You don't have to chew over to
- 34:27argue about it. There's the rule.
- 34:28Here's what we're going to do. Make your choice.
- 34:31Figure out which bids you going to figure out which bids you
- 34:34going to lie in. OK, so Speaking of rules, and I
- 34:37was trying to find the exact rule here, but the other part of
- 34:40the the rules, you had the damaged vehicle policy, which I
- 34:43think is interesting. It's kind of some some minutiae
- 34:46there, but also the whole race manipulation deal which we saw
- 34:50last year at the end. And So what do you think about
- 34:54that in general? Because you obviously had some
- 34:57team play going on and this was what this was Austin Dillon, you
- 35:02had Bubba Wallace, it was the whole situation with Christopher
- 35:07Bell and William Byron. How do you think this should be
- 35:11handled? Because also you have some
- 35:13manufacturer play on superspeedways in terms of when
- 35:16you pit and being out there as a manufacturer group.
- 35:21How do you think NASCAR handled this?
- 35:23What should they do? Because you don't, in my
- 35:25opinion, you don't want to see what we saw last year where
- 35:28clearly you had cars that were not being able to pass other
- 35:31cars in that race. Brad Keslowski, I mean, I'd have
- 35:34been pissed if I was him. He's getting held up because
- 35:36everybody's trying to get their they're manufacturers in the in
- 35:41the final four there. What do you think?
- 35:43Yeah, you know, the you know, one of the one of the problem,
- 35:45one of the problems with officiate, especially NASCAR is
- 35:48Gray area. You know, the Gray area is just
- 35:51it's the toughest frigging toughest thing areas to to
- 35:54officiate in racing. You know, so we've always had
- 35:58these big wide Gray areas in our sport.
- 36:00We're wide areas, man, in mass over the years have tried to
- 36:04bring that area into black and white, right?
- 36:07And, and this is one of those situations where, all right, how
- 36:11are we going to make this black and white, right?
- 36:14Did they really just do that or did they not?
- 36:16Did that car really just hold that guy up on purpose or did he
- 36:20not? Right.
- 36:22How in the hell do you officiate that, right when it gets so
- 36:26blatant where everybody can see it?
- 36:28Yeah, OK, we're going to penalize it.
- 36:31But where is that? Where is that point, Charlie?
- 36:33Right. Think about that a second.
- 36:35You're officiating. You're officiating that race,
- 36:38and you've got to decide that guy's doing that on purpose,
- 36:41right? Excuse me.
- 36:47I couldn't do it. I mean, honestly, if I was the
- 36:49official, you know, I I don't, I don't know that I could sit
- 36:54there. Now if somebody takes it so far,
- 36:56Yeah, where everybody sees it, yeah, OK.
- 36:59But if you're sitting there thinking as a racer, you know,
- 37:02and maybe an eraser, I could maybe pick up on it quicker.
- 37:04I'm like, I know what he's doing, I know what he's doing,
- 37:07but am IA 100% positive that's what he's doing?
- 37:11No, I'm not, but. But I'm not.
- 37:14But I'm thinking that. But in the case I brought up,
- 37:16wasn't that pretty damn egregious?
- 37:18Didn't we all know what was going on?
- 37:21Yes, we did. We did.
- 37:23Yeah, we did. Yeah, we did.
- 37:26You know, and again, I, I just, I just think that there's going
- 37:32to be some time this year calls going to be made, there's going
- 37:34to be an argument. No, I didn't.
- 37:36Yes, you did. No, I didn't.
- 37:38Yes, I yes, you would. It doesn't matter.
- 37:40You got penalized, right. So, yeah, yeah, I don't know.
- 37:44It's going, that's going to be one that's going to be
- 37:45interesting to follow. We will.
- 37:46We'll have some. We'll have we'll have some, you
- 37:50know, we'll have some, we'll have some shows on this this
- 37:52year. I think you know, and and Thomas
- 37:55makes a good point. Maybe telemetry.
- 37:57Yeah, certain things you can look at with telemetry and
- 37:59figured out yes, that would help.
- 38:01There's no there's no doubt about that.
- 38:02But you know, I don't know, man, I don't know.
- 38:06We'll see. And, and damn, crap, shit for
- 38:10you go to Talladega and you're always manipulating.
- 38:13You know, you manipulate all the time.
- 38:14You're always manipulating. But yeah, I get it.
- 38:17I get it. I don't know this.
- 38:19I think this one's going to play out to where we're going to see
- 38:22some more changes. I think before it's all said and
- 38:24done, there's going to be some more rules written or it's going
- 38:28to be some rewording done. There's going to be more
- 38:30understandings about things. I didn't.
- 38:32I don't think we've heard the last of this ruling yet.
- 38:36All right. I do want to move on to some
- 38:37other sports topics and football, but any, anything else
- 38:41NASCAR on your mind that we didn't hit on?
- 38:45No, I think we've, we've pretty much covered the gamut here, you
- 38:48know, been kind of a, you know, kind of a slow off season, you
- 38:52might say with the stuff we had, you know, the Mike Wallace, the
- 38:55junior thing and the rules changes.
- 38:57So you know what that means, Charlie?
- 39:00That means we're going to be at Daytona, there's going to be
- 39:01more shit happening. The 14 podcasts are going to be
- 39:05be able to keep up with. That's typically what goes on.
- 39:08You know, you you spend all winter, everybody yapping about
- 39:11everything and everything that's going on and everybody's pissed
- 39:13off, everybody's happy, right? You get Daytona, it's kind of ho
- 39:17ho. Then you have these winners
- 39:18where nothing's going on, right? And like everything's pretty
- 39:21cool. You get Daytona and they're all
- 39:23hell breaks loose. That's that's typically the way
- 39:25it works. So we'll see.
- 39:27Course, the winter's not over yet.
- 39:29The offseason's not over yet. Right.
- 39:31I I forgot though, because it has been a while since
- 39:34developments, new developments, but it seems like on the lawsuit
- 39:38front, the momentum has shifted towards the teams, at least for.
- 39:43Now, Yep, Yep, for now. For now and again.
- 39:46Oh excuse me, choked up. Damn, it goes my phone.
- 39:50I'm sorry, folks. It's all good.
- 39:53That's my best buddy in the world.
- 39:54But anyhow, yeah, it has. You know, the last rule.
- 39:58Yeah, they changed judges. How do you do that, Charlie?
- 40:00And then they got a new judge aside and the new judge come in
- 40:04and said, Nah, Nah, yeah, we ain't going to do it that way.
- 40:06This way, we're going to do it. So let's swim back towards.
- 40:11That's when the latest ruling swung back towards the two teams
- 40:14where they could. And that really went back to
- 40:16what I thought was going to happen anyhow.
- 40:17I think we talked about it. You know, we figured they could
- 40:20keep a lawsuit going, but they would let them, you know, run
- 40:23this year with the charters in place, which goes against what
- 40:26NASCAR is trying to do there. But we all kind of figured they
- 40:29would let them run with the charter.
- 40:31So that's what the new judge allowed them to do while they
- 40:33still fight about the overall thing.
- 40:35So who knows? Who knows?
- 40:38All right, we have we have almost 1100 people watching
- 40:41live. We have about 1000 watching.
- 40:43We're putting it on X live as well.
- 40:46And I had we we retweeted it from the Kenny Wallace account.
- 40:49So about 1100 people, 1000 on X and about 100 or so on YouTube.
- 40:55How about just elsewhere? Hello, elsewhere in the world of
- 41:00sports. So this time of year, Rick Mass,
- 41:02are you watching a lot of football?
- 41:04Are you watching more college or NFL?
- 41:07I've I've always been much more of a college guy.
- 41:10I grew up a huge Ohio State fan, so last night was a good night.
- 41:13My whole family, I got brothers and sister that went to Ohio
- 41:16State, a bunch of aunts and uncles.
- 41:17So I was born into an Ohio State family.
- 41:20I never really had an NFL team that I really rooted for.
- 41:25We're about a hour from Detroit, so we had Barry Sanders and the
- 41:27Lions growing up. We're about two hours from
- 41:29Cleveland. The Browns kind of stunk when I
- 41:32was growing up. Then they moved, so I'm all into
- 41:35college football. I did start to watch a few of
- 41:37the playoff games NFL this past weekend, but I'm sad.
- 41:40College football is over. But I can't complain because
- 41:44again, the one team I care about, the Buckeyes.
- 41:47I'm 42 years old, Rick, and my favorite team has now won three
- 41:52national championships in my lifetime and all three since
- 41:56what, 2002? So I can't complain.
- 41:59And you know what? I think a program on the level
- 42:02of Ohio State, with their resources, they probably should
- 42:05win one national championship about every decade.
- 42:08I think that's fair. Yeah, man, congratulations to
- 42:12you all your Buckeyes, right, Dennis Bickmeyer, the president
- 42:16of Richmond Raceway, Big time Buckeye.
- 42:18He's grads a big time Buckeye. Well, he's not president any
- 42:20longer, but for years and he was always we're texting all the
- 42:22time about that deal and I'm gigging and getting on him about
- 42:25it. But congratulations to you,
- 42:27Charlie. I mean, we, me personally, I
- 42:29never felt it until was it 19 when our Wahoos, Virginia Wahoos
- 42:34won the national basketball championship.
- 42:35And that was like, damn, that was cool.
- 42:38I mean, that was really, really cool because you'd have followed
- 42:40that team since 76 in the football team.
- 42:43And, you know, man, the college deal is just killing me right
- 42:47now. The NIL.
- 42:49Is it just every time I turn around, you know, and maybe it's
- 42:53because it's affecting the teams that I follow more than other
- 42:56teams, right? Maybe teams that I follow are
- 42:59just not, you know, not doing it properly yet.
- 43:01But our Wahoos have hit rock bottom in the basketball deal.
- 43:053-4 years ago we were champions, right?
- 43:08Our football team's not doing worth of crap, right?
- 43:10And we lost one of the greatest coaches to ever coach in college
- 43:14sports, Tony Bennett. We lost him because of NIL,
- 43:18dude. You know, he more or less said
- 43:20it. And so then the other, other
- 43:23side of it is, well, you got to get with, if you're going to be
- 43:25a coach of today's world, you got to get with the program.
- 43:27Nobody's, nobody's nobody says. I don't haven't heard anybody
- 43:30say we don't want players get paid.
- 43:31Everybody wants players get paid.
- 43:33But you know, the way they're going about it, in my personal
- 43:35opinion, in my personal opinion, the NCAA, whoever the NCAA is,
- 43:40they ought to go in there that one day, lock the door, escort
- 43:44everybody out, everybody, whoever they are, escort them
- 43:47all out and escort new people in 'cause you can't screw up things
- 43:51any worse than this. This NCAA has screwed this our
- 43:54collegiate, our collegiate sports up in the last 10 years.
- 43:57You there, there, there's nobody could screw it up as bad as
- 44:00those deal guys have done. And but then, you know, then you
- 44:05look at somebody like Ohio State, Notre Dame, I mean, Notre
- 44:07Dame's going to always have their kids.
- 44:08I don't care what they do with NIL because there's certain
- 44:12mindset of kids are going to go to, to, to Notre Dame because
- 44:15that's where you want to go, right?
- 44:17All the other schools have got to fight over #1 the prestige of
- 44:19the school. And then the money thing kicks
- 44:22in. You're like, well, yeah, we
- 44:24might have a chance to win there, but I'm going to make
- 44:26another 400,000 if I go to this team, right?
- 44:28So that that's where I think then then the a lot of the stuff
- 44:32and transfer, the transfer portal, man, I just, I just, I
- 44:35guess a few things got Rick Mass pissed off this week.
- 44:37It's the NCAA group, the committee.
- 44:39Fire every damn one of them. Everyone of them.
- 44:42I don't care if they're the janitor.
- 44:43Get them out of there, lock the door, put a new group in that
- 44:47that. And you know what I put in to
- 44:49run this thing. You know what I would do,
- 44:50Charlie? I'd go with Jay Wright.
- 44:53OK? Nick Saban, Nick Saban, Roy
- 44:56Williams. How about Tony?
- 44:57Bennett. Yeah.
- 44:59Tony Bennett. That's who I would put running
- 45:01this thing. I really would.
- 45:02Yeah, They probably don't want that headache, but that's who
- 45:05I'd put if the that's who I'd put in the running it.
- 45:08All of them say the same thing, you know, we agree.
- 45:10We want our kids to make money, you know, but then we can't get
- 45:13into bidding more. I mean, if you're a college
- 45:15coach, you might as well be nowadays.
- 45:17You might as well be an NFL head coach.
- 45:18I mean, all you're doing, you know, you're trying to fit or a
- 45:21general manager of a, of a, of a, of a professional team
- 45:25because you're, you're bidding the rights.
- 45:26You're dealing with agents, right?
- 45:28It ain't about school anymore, you know.
- 45:30But anyhow, past all that, the Redskins bad.
- 45:36When I was little coming up, we had one little TV station.
- 45:38We could get very snowy, and my uncle had it.
- 45:41We didn't get it at our house, Harley.
- 45:42I had to go up on the hill and watch Sunday football, and I
- 45:45watched the Redskins, man, and watched the Redskins all through
- 45:48the years. Redskins have always been #1 and
- 45:51you know, we haven't had anything.
- 45:53We haven't won anything since 1991, I think, last time.
- 45:57We're in the NFC Championship and here we are man 2025.
- 46:01We're going to the NCI mean the NCAA crap.
- 46:04We're going into the NFC National League football
- 46:08championship dude against the Eagles.
- 46:10The the the are are sworn enemy that the Eagles.
- 46:13Well, the Cowboys are Eagles. Yeah, but anyhow, that that's
- 46:16that's that's what it's got mixed Saudi right now is, is the
- 46:19risk is, damn it, the Commanders, the Commanders, Dr.
- 46:24Redskins, the Commanders, I don't care.
- 46:26They're still the Redskins to me.
- 46:27I'm just too fragging old Charlie to change.
- 46:30I'm going to always say Redskins, dude.
- 46:32It's all good. Hey, so you bring up a good
- 46:34point, though, about NIL, and I think about this, too.
- 46:37So clearly I'm an Ohio State fan.
- 46:40They have a $20 million roster. Not every school can have that.
- 46:43I I'm very aware of that. But also I went to Bradley
- 46:46University, which is a mid major.
- 46:48We don't even have a football program.
- 46:50We have a basketball program, which is pretty damn good.
- 46:52But you're going to see if you get a kid who goes to Bradley
- 46:56and his freshman year, like let's be real, he grew up.
- 46:59He probably wanted to go to Illinois.
- 47:00He probably wanted to go to Indiana, Wisconsin, whatever.
- 47:04He goes to Bradley. He averages 17 points a game his
- 47:07first year. Well, all of a sudden now
- 47:09Illinois wants him. So it's going to hurt the mid
- 47:12majors. And you bring up a great point.
- 47:14NIL is great for Ohio State. Look at Virginia.
- 47:18Virginia won with a style in basketball.
- 47:21Tony Bennett did more with less, right?
- 47:24He didn't have these blue chip recruits, but he was playing his
- 47:29style. He won a national championship,
- 47:31had an unbelievable success and I know part of the reason he
- 47:34left is all the NIL crap and now it's really hard for a team like
- 47:39that to compete now when it's pretty much all about the money.
- 47:43Yeah, look at Louisville. Louisville suck tit down from
- 47:47forever and and look at him this year, man.
- 47:50They're one of the hottest teams in the nation.
- 47:52They got a new coach. All the players on that team are
- 47:55are are new to the team, right? They brought them in usually
- 47:59from the NIL and all that, and they're they're doing great.
- 48:01And that's a good thing for that school.
- 48:03But you know, Charlie, I don't know, it being old school, I
- 48:05just got used to Bennett's deal. We would start reading.
- 48:08You would start, if you're a fan of that team, I would start
- 48:12reading the recruiting deals back.
- 48:14But guys were sophomores and juniors in high school.
- 48:16We'd see who Bennett was recruiting and we keep up with
- 48:19that, right? And he was some of we, some of
- 48:22them, excuse me, some of them would we would get and some of
- 48:26them we wouldn't. But then we got him.
- 48:29We got him on the team. Excuse me.
- 48:33And they would red shirt the guy, right.
- 48:37So you go to the ball games, you've seen this guy you
- 48:39followed for two years and he's sitting in a red shirt, right?
- 48:42And then he finally the next year he gets to play well by his
- 48:45third or fourth year, man, he's a superstar.
- 48:48And you're winning, you're winning the ACC championship
- 48:51every year. You go into the tournament every
- 48:53year and then the next year or two, that guy that you watched,
- 48:57right, the baby was a street a three star recruit.
- 49:01Guess what, Charlie, he's playing in the friggin NBA,
- 49:04right. That's what Bennett did.
- 49:06He brought decent talent in, worked their asses off and and
- 49:11learned how to play the ball the the game the right way and end
- 49:15up making millions in NBA. That was one who's the last guy
- 49:18Trey Murphy had transferred into Virginia a few years ago.
- 49:23Good player, but he transferred in and his statement was I want
- 49:26to play in the NBA. I've got to play for Tony
- 49:29Bennett for a couple of years to figure out how to prove by stock
- 49:33to play in the NBA right. And he's one of the top well,
- 49:39he's he's he's above major, he's above mid pay scale in the NBA
- 49:44right now, right, doing doing very, very well.
- 49:46And that that's what I personally enjoyed about
- 49:49watching our Virginia team through the years, right?
- 49:54NIL comes long, all that's gone. You know, you're going to get
- 49:57instant gratification for one year.
- 50:00Whatever guys we brought in, whatever guys we hire from the
- 50:03NIL to come into our team and we'll go watch them play.
- 50:07We get instant gratification for one year because the next year
- 50:11you're going to have a whole different set of faces.
- 50:13And that you know, that's just that's, that's what it is right
- 50:16now, right? And if you're going to enjoy it,
- 50:18you got to accept this is where I'm I'm going to enjoy this
- 50:21right now. Granted, our who's right now are
- 50:25sucking high in tit. They're not playing very well.
- 50:27So you know, that makes me more, that makes me more disgusted,
- 50:30right? But you know, that's the
- 50:32reality. That's the reality of what we
- 50:34live in right now. All right, look at this guy,
- 50:37this guy Ronnie McKee says. He says if I wanted to listen
- 50:42about football, I would watch ESPN or a half dozen other
- 50:46places. Come on, Ronnie.
- 50:47I mean, we did. We did 40 minutes of racing
- 50:50talk. It is the offseason, OK?
- 50:52We're just ending on a little football.
- 50:54So I said, come on, come on, man.
- 50:56Let's end on this though, because our fearless leader, the
- 51:01great Kenny Wallace is in Italy. He's in Rome.
- 51:04He was at the Vatican yesterday. He's checking out the Ferrari
- 51:07Museum, I believe today. I think he put a video out
- 51:10there. So when we're done, I will put
- 51:12that here on the Kenny Wallace YouTube channel and also Kenny
- 51:15Wallace Media on podcast. So, Rick Mass, what's what's the
- 51:19greatest vacation you ever took in your life?
- 51:26CMA Fest four years ago, Nashville, TN OK, the best, the
- 51:31most fun I've ever had, right? We went down, Sarah and I with
- 51:36our 2 twin daughters, Sarah and Katie.
- 51:38We went down there like 100 and 5500 and 1000°, right?
- 51:43Hotter than hell all week, but I'm telling you, we got that on
- 51:47like Tuesday. We stayed till, excuse me, we
- 51:50stayed till midnight on Sunday night.
- 51:53The last, you know, they do that deal in the stadium Thursday,
- 51:56Friday, Saturday, Sunday, they do these concerts.
- 51:59And so the last concert's always on Sunday night.
- 52:02It ended at midnight or 1:00 in the morning or something.
- 52:04Then we drove home, right, Because I think the girls had to
- 52:07be back to work the next morning or something.
- 52:09Yeah, I drove all night to get home.
- 52:10But anyhow, that was probably the most fun because I don't,
- 52:14I've never been there before, been to Nashville.
- 52:16But it's the happiest for every bunch of people, right?
- 52:19And if you like music at all, if you got any kind of music in you
- 52:22at all that you like, you know, you cannot like, you cannot not
- 52:26like this place. You just, you know, you just go
- 52:28down the street, you go into this bar and there's somebody
- 52:30playing music and they're damn good.
- 52:32It's all these people trying to make it in the music industry.
- 52:34And you walk, walk out of that door, go 20 feet into another
- 52:37door. And there, there are again,
- 52:39just, you know, build enough to build enough to build it.
- 52:41And then you go anywhere you want to go.
- 52:43It's all about music and just happy fragging people.
- 52:46Lot of them are, you see, I'm always keep saying drunk.
- 52:50I say drunk is knee braided a little bit.
- 52:52But everybody's just happy, right?
- 52:53Everybody's happy now. Some of the neatest deals they
- 52:57used to do when I was with school, dude, they had two
- 53:01matches. They owned, They owned one in
- 53:03Watch Hill, RI. They owned one in Florida, right
- 53:06down below this place here, this place called Marlago.
- 53:10I have, yes. Right down the street from Mar a
- 53:14Lago, USTUS tobacco skull. They own this place.
- 53:17So what would happen in the winter, like in January, in the
- 53:21offseason, we would go down to the place at near Mar a Lago at
- 53:26their mansion and it would be me.
- 53:27It'd be all the drivers and the executives.
- 53:30It'd be like me and our wives, me, Harry Gantz, Dake Praddone,
- 53:34AJ Foyt. You know the current drivers,
- 53:36right? Most time of what I was there
- 53:38was us for and our wives. And it would be the CEO of the
- 53:43company, CFO, the company, the president of the company.
- 53:45He'd be like, you know, 5 or 6 of the top execs of the company,
- 53:49right? And Johnny Hayes, of course.
- 53:51And you, you stay in this big mansion, dude.
- 53:55And you get up early like 6:00 in the morning and you go in
- 53:57there and they have this big long table and a feast of
- 53:59breakfast, right? But 630, you're out the door.
- 54:02The guys were all out and you're on the golf course by 7:00
- 54:06playing golf. Then when that was done, you
- 54:08come back to the mansion, sit down for this long feast of food
- 54:13for lunch, right in the afternoon.
- 54:15All those people, the rich people, they go take naps.
- 54:18I mean, the first time we went, me and Sharon was like, we ate
- 54:20lunch. We looked around, we couldn't
- 54:21find anybody. Where the Hell's everybody at?
- 54:23Right. We're well, they're all taking
- 54:24naps. That's when I realized rich
- 54:26people take naps. Then you get all dressed up
- 54:29fancy for the supper. Dude, the other supper was the
- 54:33big deal, right? Or dinner, I guess.
- 54:35Dinner. We they call it dinner.
- 54:37And it was the damnedest bunch of exquisite food, the the best
- 54:43food you'd ever eat, right? And you'd do all this and you
- 54:46know, it'd just be a cool. Then you'd sit around shooting
- 54:49crap and you do that for a week and then watch Hill, Rhode
- 54:52Island. They had the same thing up
- 54:54there. We would do that on an off
- 54:57weekend. In other words, like we'd run
- 55:00Daytona the July 4th race and either next week we'd run New
- 55:04Hampshire. It would be a week off and then
- 55:06and they would do it like then and get all the drivers and
- 55:08wives up there. And that's for those are very,
- 55:12very strong remembrances. Very good happy remembrances of
- 55:16of of my deal with with US tobacco and but they were cool
- 55:20vacation but complete decades. Charlie, excuse me, You're
- 55:28waited on hand. You're waited on hand and foot,
- 55:31right? And eat the best gourmet food
- 55:34you ever eat in your life and sit down with these executives,
- 55:39man. And it's like, you know, they're
- 55:41no different from us. You know, it's like the wives
- 55:44ruled the Rouge, right? You would you always wonder, I
- 55:48think a lot of people wonder when you get to be in those kind
- 55:51of positions. I bet those guys don't take any
- 55:53crap off anybody, right? Wrong.
- 55:55It's no different than you, Bubba.
- 55:58You, Robert. It's no different.
- 56:01Those guys are ruled by their wives.
- 56:03It's the same deal as we all have to go through.
- 56:06There's no different. You know, it's, it's, I don't
- 56:08know, just even other executives I met Charlie through the years
- 56:13with these powerful companies, they're always the same thing,
- 56:16man. It's always the wives ruling the
- 56:17roost. You know, it was just watch all
- 56:19that happen. Made me feel good about things.
- 56:22I love it. I'll tell you what we're almost
- 56:23at an hour. We're both coffin.
- 56:25So it's a perfect time to call it good show for everybody
- 56:30watching. Please comment like subscribe on
- 56:34YouTube, please rate and subscribe on Kenny Wallace media
- 56:38on the podcast. Those five star reviews really
- 56:41help. And Rick, we'll end it like this
- 56:43because we started the show. It was 0° in Saint Louis.
- 56:47It's warmed up. It's 1° now in Saint Louis.
- 56:51But if you see that, it feels like -8.
- 56:54It feels like -8. That's ridiculous.
- 56:58It's one it's we've got a regular heat wave here. 16,
- 57:01baby, Yeah. Heat wave.
- 57:04Alright, 1° that's just ridiculous.
- 57:07Hey, what do you think about? What's everybody think about
- 57:08this? I got a little thing happening.
- 57:11What? I was 17 or 18 or 19 years old.
- 57:15I grew a beard, then one time in the 90s I drew a Fu Manchu
- 57:21thing, right? That's the only time I've ever
- 57:23had facial hair and now I've got this thing going.
- 57:26Can y'all see that? I like it.
- 57:29Some people I've, I've had all kinds of, I've had all kinds of
- 57:33comments, Charlie. Some say you look more
- 57:36distinguished. Some said you look older.
- 57:38Some says it looks scraggly. Some says you're in the you're
- 57:41in the the part where it don't look good before it looks good.
- 57:45A couple of them said, man, I like it baby.
- 57:47That's sexy, right? I like that.
- 57:49So I don't know. I've had a couple.
- 57:51So it makes you look old. I don't know.
- 57:54What if I what if I just put some dye in it, make it darker?
- 57:57What do you think? Or should have just shaved the
- 57:59damn thing off. That's the thing, people.
- 58:01People will criticize Ryan Day, the Ohio State football coach,
- 58:05because I I think he might be dying.
- 58:07The beard and the hair. He's yeah.
- 58:09I think he is. 45, So he's not that old.
- 58:12Yeah, but his beard and hair jet black, so I think he's using
- 58:16some dye. Yeah, I think so.
- 58:18I think you're. I think it's right.
- 58:20Maybe before I save it, if I do shave it off, maybe I'll die,
- 58:23put some brown dye in it from next week and see what I don't
- 58:28know. To see what people say here on
- 58:29the on the Rick Bash show. I don't know.
- 58:31There you go. I don't know.
- 58:32I don't know if they'll like it. So comment on Rick's beard and
- 58:36also the glasses and I'll just say it.
- 58:39It's like what you said about the big time CE OS.
- 58:41It all comes down to what the wife likes.
- 58:43For example, I used to always be clean shaven.
- 58:45I almost never in my life wore a beard.
- 58:49And I don't really even call this a beard.
- 58:50Like I I trim it a lot. I always shave my neck, but my
- 58:54wife loves the beard. So I've basically been after
- 58:57probably the first 30, what, 30 years of my life I was always
- 59:01clean shaven and then the last whatever, 11-12 since I met my
- 59:05wife, I almost always have this going on now because she likes
- 59:07it. Well, yeah, I mean, yeah, that's
- 59:10that's always overriding factor, you know, but, you know, you try
- 59:13to get your opinion set, you know, before you have to deal
- 59:17with your bride to have a little bit of argument of fortitude.
- 59:20But, you know, I get it. But if that's what she likes and
- 59:23I'd, I'd go with it. Dude, I don't know.
- 59:26We'll have to see what everybody says about.
- 59:28This all right comment. Love you all.
- 59:30Thank. You. 1300 thirteen 120 people
- 59:34are watching right now a lot of them on X Let's check the
