Latest / Reformed Thinking / The Gospel Without Borders: A Biblical Vision of Mission from Everywhere to Everyone

- 0:01Imagine looking at a map of Christianity from, say, 1950.
- 0:06Think about the map you had in your middle school classroom.
- 0:08Yeah, the old canvas ones you pulled down like a window shade
- 0:11over the chalkboard. Right.
- 0:13And the center of the world on that map is basically London and
- 0:16New York. The lines radiate out from North
- 0:20America and Western Europe, pointing toward the rest of the
- 0:22globe. Everything was highly
- 0:24centralized, very neat and tidy. Yeah, the borders are drawn with
- 0:28heavy ink. The capital cities have big
- 0:30stars. Everything feels static and
- 0:33predictable. We like things categorized.
- 0:35You know, We like a clear center and a clear periphery.
- 0:37It gives a false sense of control.
- 0:39It really does. But if you look at the
- 0:41geographic and spiritual landscape today, you basically
- 0:44have to take that old map, RIP it into tiny pieces, and throw
- 0:47it in the trash. You really do.
- 0:49So welcome to Reformed thinking. Today we're taking a deep dive
- 0:53into the source material covering A radical shift in
- 0:56global missions, a shift called the Gospel, from everywhere to
- 1:00everyone. Because that old map is
- 1:02completely gone. It is and the sources we are
- 1:05looking at call for a return to a specific cross shaped
- 1:09worldview to understand what is happening.
- 1:12Because the shattering of that old map is not an administrative
- 1:15crisis. I mean, many Western
- 1:17institutions are treating it like 1, but it is actually a
- 1:20theological crossroads. Right.
- 1:22And the discussion we are having today will examine how we view
- 1:26human beings. We will look at the severe
- 1:29pitfalls of corporate strategy in church planting, and we will
- 1:32do a specific exegesis of Second Corinthians chapter 5.
- 1:36We have to look at this as an epistemological shift.
- 1:39We are not gathering sociological statistics to
- 1:41figure out our next move here, right?
- 1:43We are looking at the written word to understand what God is
- 1:46doing. Because the demographic center
- 1:47of the faith has moved decisively toward the Global
- 1:50South. Yes, we are talking about
- 1:52massive, undeniable growth in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
- 1:56The paternalistic West to the Rest unidirectional model is
- 1:59obsolete. I think of that outdated
- 2:01missiology like an old 20th century corporate headquarters.
- 2:04That is a good way to frame it. Yeah, you have the main office
- 2:06in the West and it views itself as the civilized resource
- 2:10abundance center. That headquarters sends
- 2:13directives, funding and personnel to the dependent
- 2:16branch offices out on the margins.
- 2:18Treating them like unevangelized franchises.
- 2:20Right, but the new reality described in the text is a
- 2:24decentralized living network. Every single location is both a
- 2:28sender and a receiver now. Which is how it should be.
- 2:31A believer from Lagos might plant a church in London.
- 2:34A congregation in Sao Paulo might fund and send workers to
- 2:37North Africa. The headquarters model is dead,
- 2:40so if the old map is useless, what specific lens should the
- 2:44church use to look at the world now?
- 2:46Well, the lens must be vertical, not horizontal.
- 2:49We must look through the spectacles of Holy Scripture,
- 2:51and specifically we have to look through the sovereign decree of
- 2:53God. Because this demographic shift
- 2:55is not a human accident. No, not at all.
- 2:58It is not the result of clever human marketing or shifting
- 3:02cultural trends. It is the majestic execution of
- 3:05God's sovereign decree. Let us bring in the Westminster
- 3:08Confession here. Yes, specifically Chapter 5
- 3:11concerning Providence. It states that God, the Great
- 3:14Creator of all things, doth uphold, direct, dispose and
- 3:18govern all creatures, actions and things, from the greatest
- 3:22even to the least. He does this by his most wise
- 3:25and holy Providence. Right, according to His
- 3:27infallible foreknowledge and the free and immutable counsel of
- 3:30His own will. The rise of African initiated
- 3:33churches and the massive mobilization of Latin American
- 3:36missionary agencies proves the mandate belongs to the entire
- 3:40body of Christ. Which means the West must
- 3:42abandoned its provincialism. We have to we have to learn from
- 3:45the doctrinal zeal and the physical endurance of persecuted
- 3:48believers in poorer regions. And that vertical lens changes
- 3:52everything about how we assess success or failure.
- 3:55It alters the entire metric. Because if you are stuck in a
- 3:58horizontal sociological mindset, you might look at the decline of
- 4:01institutional religion in North America.
- 4:04Read the think pieces about empty buildings and panic.
- 4:07You might assume the church is failing.
- 4:08Yeah, but the vertical lens shows you that God is actively
- 4:12scattering and gathering his elect precisely as he planned
- 4:16from eternity past. He humbles old centers and
- 4:19strengthens young churches. It is a massive display of
- 4:23Providence. And yet this requires us to
- 4:25fundamentally change how we view the people we are trying to
- 4:29reach. The sources point out that
- 4:31Western missions frequently fall into post Enlightenment
- 4:34materialism. Which is a massive roadblock.
- 4:37They bring up a really interesting story about Doctor
- 4:39Daniel Fountain to illustrate this.
- 4:41He was a medical missionary who went to Zaire, which is now the
- 4:44Democratic Republic of Congo. He discovered something pretty
- 4:47jarring about his own Western medical training.
- 4:50Can you break down his specific experience?
- 4:53Sure, Doctor Fountain's experience is the perfect case
- 4:55study in the danger of secular reductionism.
- 4:58He arrived in Africa highly trained in Western medicine.
- 5:00He was ready to cure diseases. But he hit a wall.
- 5:03He did. He quickly realized that his
- 5:05modern, secularized medical training systematically
- 5:08depersonalized his patients. Because it completely ignored
- 5:11the human spirit. Right post Enlightenment
- 5:14materialism operates within a closed system of naturalism.
- 5:18It restricts its view to what can be scientifically measured,
- 5:21observed and experimented upon in a laboratory.
- 5:24So it treats human beings as biological machines.
- 5:27That is the core issue. It views physical bodies as
- 5:30collections of spare parts to fix.
- 5:33Or if you look at the realm of psychiatry, it reduces the mind
- 5:37to psychological profiles to manipulate.
- 5:40Stripping away all cosmic meaning.
- 5:41Exactly, or rather precisely, it renders God completely
- 5:46irrelevant to human flourishing. I.
- 5:48Want to push back on this a little though, or at least play
- 5:51devil's adjective for you, the listener.
- 5:52Are modern medicine and psychology inherently bad tools
- 5:56for a missionary to use? That is a fair question to ask.
- 5:59Let's say a missionary goes to a foreign field and they encounter
- 6:02a village suffering from a cholera outbreak.
- 6:05Should they throw away their medical degree or their
- 6:07understanding of human biology because those things were
- 6:09developed in a secular context? No, absolutely not.
- 6:13Because. It feels like there's a tension
- 6:14between using effective scientific tools and adopting
- 6:17the worldview that produced them.
- 6:19The tools themselves are completely fine.
- 6:21The danger is the secular bias that strips away cosmic meaning.
- 6:26A Christian doctor absolutely should use a scalpel.
- 6:28Prescribe antibiotics and treat cholera.
- 6:31We recognize those medical advancements as part of God's
- 6:34common grace in the physical world.
- 6:36Right. The error occurs when the
- 6:38practitioner adopts the naturalistic worldview that
- 6:40insists the physical body is all there is.
- 6:43When we yield to that secular reductionism, we depersonalize
- 6:47the sick into clinical cases. It.
- 6:49Becomes a very cold, sterile transaction.
- 6:51It establishes a non reciprocal relationship.
- 6:54The highly educated Western professional acts upon a
- 6:57passive, ignorant recipient. Doctor Fountain realized that
- 7:01curing physical ailments in his African patients required
- 7:04addressing the heart. The core of meaning.
- 7:06Yes, the center of reconciliation with God.
- 7:08So it really comes down to the definition of a human being.
- 7:11Precisely true biblical anthropology, as outlined in the
- 7:14Westminster Confession chapter 4, asserts that human beings are
- 7:18an integrated unity of body and spirit.
- 7:20Created in the Imago day. Yes, the image of God.
- 7:23Because of the fall of Adam, the entire human constitution is
- 7:26corrupted by sin, but the structure of that image remains.
- 7:30So a biblical view recognizes the person sitting in the clinic
- 7:34not as a biological machine with a broken part.
- 7:38But as an eternal soul, fallen in Adam, accountable before God
- 7:43and in desperate need of reconciliation through the last
- 7:46Adam, Jesus Christ. The healing process must respect
- 7:49the absolute dignity of the image bearer.
- 7:52It has to address their alienation from their creator.
- 7:55That makes total sense, and if you view people as biological
- 7:59machines, it leads directly to treating the church's mission as
- 8:03an industrial corporate machine. Which is a huge problem.
- 8:06The sources talk extensively about the illusion of managerial
- 8:09missiology. Yes, that is the term they use.
- 8:11Modern evangelicalism often treats theology for corporate
- 8:14business management. They rely heavily on demographic
- 8:17matrices, target tracking and categorizing people into
- 8:20homogeneous units. Just to satisfy the
- 8:23administrative hunger of Western institutional boards.
- 8:26It makes me think of running a political campaign.
- 8:28Picture a campaign manager sitting in a war room looking at
- 8:31demographic data. They tweak the candidates
- 8:34messaging to appeal to specific voting blocks, they optimize the
- 8:39marketing, and they try to win votes.
- 8:41But they completely miss the fact that dead hearts cannot
- 8:44cast a vote. That is a great point.
- 8:46Only the Spirit brings the dead to life.
- 8:48That political campaign analogy hits the nail right on the head.
- 8:52Managerial missiology attempts to reduce the supernatural task
- 8:56of the Great Commission to a predictable, quantifiable human
- 9:01enterprise. Is trying to manufacture grace.
- 9:03It is. The theological root of this
- 9:05error is Arminianism and semi Pelagianism.
- 9:09These frameworks assume that human persuasion, optimized
- 9:12marketing, and contextual accommodation actually cause
- 9:15conversion. They think you can engineer a
- 9:17spiritual decision. Right.
- 9:18They operate on the premise that if you just remove the offensive
- 9:21elements of the cross, play the right music and target the right
- 9:24demographic, you will get results.
- 9:26You can just market them into the Kingdom.
- 9:27Yes, but the Reformed truth, as confessed in Westminster Chapter
- 9:31X, is that salvation is a monarchistic work of the Holy
- 9:35Spirit. Let us stop and unpack that word
- 9:37monergism, because it is the absolute pivot point here.
- 9:40It changes everything. If you believe in synergism,
- 9:43which is the idea that God and man cooperate in the initial act
- 9:47of regeneration, then managerial missiology makes perfect sense.
- 9:51Logically, yes it would. If salvation depends even a
- 9:55little bit on the unregenerate human will, then you absolutely
- 9:59should use every psychological marketing trick in the book to
- 10:02persuade that will. You should run it like a sales
- 10:04funnel. But if you believe in
- 10:05monarchistic regeneration, then all those corporate strategies
- 10:08are exposed as a severe lack of faith in sovereign grace.
- 10:11That is correct. Monarchism means God works alone
- 10:14in regeneration. The Sinner is entirely passive
- 10:17until quickened. The Holy Spirit executing the
- 10:20sovereign decree of unconditional election quickens
- 10:23the dead soul. He renews the will.
- 10:25And irresistibly draws the Sinner to Jesus Christ.
- 10:28When you grasp this, you realize you cannot manufacture church
- 10:31growth on a spreadsheet. The text matches hit and run
- 10:34evangelism aimed at securing fast decisions for funding
- 10:38reports. Which is a tragic reality.
- 10:41Picture this scenario. A missionary with a laptop
- 10:44drives a Jeep into a remote village.
- 10:47They set up a loudspeaker, give a highly emotional 15 minute
- 10:50pitch, hand out some translated tracks and ask people to raise
- 10:54their hands or sign a card. I have seen reports just like
- 10:56that. Say 50 people raise their hands.
- 10:59The missionary logs those 50 decisions into an Excel
- 11:02spreadsheet, emails it back to a donor board in Chicago to secure
- 11:06next year's funding, and drives away the next morning, never to
- 11:09return. It's heartbreaking.
- 11:11That behavior reveals A theology that thinks salvation is just a
- 11:14human choice you can tally up like sales numbers.
- 11:17It demonstrates a complete failure to trust God's
- 11:20prescribed methods. When missionaries bypass the
- 11:23arduous, unglamorous work of local church planting and
- 11:26theological discipleship to chase statistical metrics, they
- 11:30adopt the methods of the flesh. The true means are ordinary.
- 11:33They are the faithful, expository preaching of the
- 11:36Word, the right administration of the sacraments, and the
- 11:39consistency of Church discipline.
- 11:41These are the means God has ordained to gather and perfect
- 11:44His elect. We cannot treat people as
- 11:46statistical targets to be captured.
- 11:49So if corporate strategies and spreadsheets fail, missionaries
- 11:52must rely on the spiritual realities of the gospel.
- 11:55Which leads us to a massive clash of world views.
- 11:58Right, because what happens when they encounter cultures highly
- 12:01attuned to literal spiritual warfare?
- 12:04The sources point out that as the message crosses borders into
- 12:07the global S, it hits animistic societies.
- 12:10Cultures dominated by the fear of spirits, curses and ancestral
- 12:14anger. And Westerners blinded by their
- 12:16naturalism often bring an overly intellectualized message that
- 12:20feels completely useless in those contexts.
- 12:22It does not compute for the listener there.
- 12:24However, the text warns strongly against overcorrecting into
- 12:27Charismatic theology, specifically the Signs and
- 12:30Wonders movement. The collision with animism
- 12:32exposes the absolute bankruptcy of both secularized Western
- 12:36Christianity and modern charismatic errors.
- 12:38Let us unpack why Western naturalism fails first.
- 12:42Well, Western missionaries, shaped by the post enlightenment
- 12:45denial of the supernatural, struggle to answer the very real
- 12:49anxieties of tribal societies regarding demonic oppression.
- 12:52Because they do not even believe the demons are real.
- 12:55Liberal theology, which strips the Bible of its divine
- 12:58authority and presents a moralistic, secularized message,
- 13:02is worse than useless on this mission field.
- 13:05It offers a polite, ethical system to a person terrified of
- 13:09a night demon. It is like offering a Band-Aid
- 13:12to someone facing a firing squad.
- 13:14That is a very apartment description.
- 13:16So the temptation is to swing the pendulum the other way.
- 13:19The missionary thinks I need to prove my God is stronger than
- 13:22their spirits. I need to perform a physical
- 13:25exorcism or heal someone miraculously, or speak a
- 13:28prophetic word to show tangible strength.
- 13:30And the sources reject that approach entirely.
- 13:32We must operate from a strict cessationist framework.
- 13:36Explain that for the listener who might not know the term.
- 13:38The miraculous sign gifts such as tongues and Apostolic healing
- 13:42were temporary. They were given strictly to
- 13:44validate the Apostolic office and to confirm the preaching of
- 13:47the Gokpal before the New Testament Canon was complete.
- 13:50They were foundational. Right.
- 13:52The foundation of the Church was laid by the apostles and
- 13:54prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the chief
- 13:57cornerstone. You only lay a foundation once.
- 14:00I'm really struggling with this cessationism angle though, and I
- 14:03imagine you the listener might be too.
- 14:06You are telling me a missionary is facing off against a local
- 14:10shaman or a witch Doctor Who is seemingly placing real curses on
- 14:14people and the missionaries only tool is a sermon?
- 14:19I know it sounds counterintuitive to the modern
- 14:21ear. Doesn't that feel incredibly
- 14:22weak in that context? How does a missionary actually
- 14:25confront animistic fears of curses without using physical
- 14:28signs? It only feels weak if you
- 14:30underestimate the written word. The primary weapon for the mind
- 14:33and the conscience is the sword of the Spirit, the Holy
- 14:36Scriptures. We have to trust the text.
- 14:38We do. To claim that global missions
- 14:40cannot succeed without contemporary signs and wonders
- 14:44is to undermine the absolute sufficiency and authority of the
- 14:47Bible. You ask how a sermon breaks a
- 14:50curse. We have to look at the mechanism
- 14:52of substitutionary atonement. Walk me through that mechanism.
- 14:56Why does hearing a sermon break the psychological terror of a
- 14:59curse? Animistic cultures live in
- 15:01constant terror of appeasing angry spirits.
- 15:04The entire religious system is built on transactional fear.
- 15:08You perform a ritual or offer a sacrifice to keep the spirits
- 15:11from destroying your crops or making your children sick.
- 15:14It is an endless cycle of dread. It is when a missionary preaches
- 15:17expository truth about Christ's definitive victory on the cross,
- 15:21they introduce a completely alien concept, a God who absorbs
- 15:25the curse himself. Galatians chapter 3 says Christ
- 15:28redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for
- 15:30us. Yes, when the Word is preached,
- 15:32the Holy Spirit sovereignly applies the reality of Christ's
- 15:35finished work to the dead heart. The listener realizes they no
- 15:39longer have to appease the spirits.
- 15:41Because the Supreme Creator already appeased his own justice
- 15:44on their behalf. That is massive.
- 15:46It is the cross is where Christ disarmed the rulers and
- 15:50authorities, putting them to open shame.
- 15:52By triumphing over them. He stripped them of their
- 15:55accusing authority. And expository preaching of that
- 15:58historical fact breaks the spiritual chains of idolatry far
- 16:03better than any counterfeit miraculous display.
- 16:06The world constantly demands extraordinary physical displays
- 16:09to believe, but the true strength of God unto salvation
- 16:13is the simple, unadorned preaching of the cross.
- 16:16The efficacy of that preaching relies entirely on a specific
- 16:19historical and legal reality, which the sources highlight
- 16:23through an exegesis of the Apostle Paul's letters.
- 16:26Specifically in Second Corinthians.
- 16:27Right, the text dives deep into Second Corinthians chapter 5,
- 16:31specifically verses 14 through 21.
- 16:33Now just to set the stage for you listening, Paul wrote this
- 16:36letter to defend his ministry against the Corinthians super
- 16:39apostles. These guys valued worldly
- 16:41metrics. They loved eloquent speech,
- 16:44outward impressiveness and high social status.
- 16:47They were judging Paul because he suffered constantly, because
- 16:51he lacked rhetorical Polish, and because his ministry looked weak
- 16:54and pathetic to the Greco Roman. Eye They wanted a flashy CEO,
- 16:58not a suffering servant. It is like judging a master
- 17:00surgeon by the brand of his shoes rather than his skill in
- 17:03the operating. Room.
- 17:04That is a good analogy. The exegesis of this passage is
- 17:07the theological climax of the entire discussion in these
- 17:10sources. Paul states in verse 16 that we
- 17:13regard no one according to the flesh.
- 17:15Let us examine the original language there.
- 17:17The Greek phrase he uses is katasarka.
- 17:20We need to understand what that implies.
- 17:22In the Pauline corpus, katasarka refers to the fallen,
- 17:25unregenerate humanistic standard of judgment that is inherently
- 17:28hostile to God. It is the worldly matrix of
- 17:31evaluating worth. Yes, the standard that looks at
- 17:33wealth, ethnicity, education and social clout.
- 17:36And the cross destroys these worldly standards of evaluation.
- 17:41Before his conversion, Paul himself assessed Jesus by these
- 17:45exact unbelieving categories. He viewed Christ as a failed
- 17:49Jewish Carpenter and a cursed criminal hanging on a tree.
- 17:52But then the Damascus Rd. happened.
- 17:54Right. Once the risen Christ overturned
- 17:57his judgement on the Damascus Rd.
- 17:59Paul received a completely new epistemological framework.
- 18:02He no longer evaluated anyone based on their societal
- 18:05usefulness, their bank account or their political tribe.
- 18:08He viewed them through the reality of the new creation.
- 18:11Which brings us to verse 17. If anyone is in Christ, he is a
- 18:15new creation. The sources make a massive point
- 18:17about the specific Greek words Paul uses here.
- 18:20Let's slow down and unpack this, because the text threw a lot of
- 18:22terminology at us. What is the specific word for
- 18:25new creation and why does it matter?
- 18:27The Greek phrase is kaino katisis.
- 18:30Paul deliberately chose the word kainos for new.
- 18:33Kainos denotes newness and quality and essence.
- 18:35As opposed to what? Well, he did not use the word
- 18:38neos which simply means new in time or chronology, like a
- 18:42really minted coin that is identical to the old coins.
- 18:45Furthermore, he did not say the believer is belting, which means
- 18:48improved. So it is not like taking a
- 18:50rusted out broken down car, replacing the transmission,
- 18:54giving it a fresh coat of paint and saying it is improved.
- 18:57That would be belting. Correct, it is not an
- 18:59improvement and it is not orthoteros, which means more.
- 19:03Correct? He used the word tysis, which
- 19:05means creation, the kind of creation that brings something
- 19:08out of nothing. Like summoning a brand new car
- 19:11into existing distance out of thin air.
- 19:13Even more radical than that really, because it involves
- 19:15raising the dead. This signifies that conversion
- 19:18is not a human self improvement project.
- 19:20It is not turning over a new leaf or adopting a better moral
- 19:23philosophy. It is a radical resurrection
- 19:26from spiritual death. It is a sovereign monarchistic
- 19:29act of God that mirrors the original creation out of nothing
- 19:32in Genesis chapter 1 when God said let there be light.
- 19:35When a Sinner is united to Christ, the eschatological new
- 19:38creation has already broken into this present evil age.
- 19:42Which totally dismantles the managerial messiology we talked
- 19:45about earlier. You cannot use corporate
- 19:46marketing to cause a canikatasis.
- 19:49You cannot use a spreadsheet to track resurrections from the
- 19:51dead. That requires the voice of the
- 19:53son of Todd. Absolutely.
- 19:55This shift in perception is grounded in the reality of what
- 19:58happens at conversion, and that leads directly to the concept of
- 20:02reconciliation in verses 18 and 19.
- 20:05Paul writes. All this is from God, who
- 20:08through Christ reconciled us to Himself.
- 20:11The text highlights the Greek word for reconciliation which is
- 20:14cataloso. I know in modern English when we
- 20:17say 2 friends reconciled, it usually means they had a
- 20:20conversation, let go of their mutual resentment and decided to
- 20:23feel better about each other. It is a vague emotional
- 20:27sentiment. But that is not what Cataloso
- 20:29means here, is it? Not at all.
- 20:30Cataloso is used in classical Greek to describe the
- 20:33restoration of political peace between warring states.
- 20:37It is a legal, objective reality and not just a subjective
- 20:40feeling. Paul elevates this word.
- 20:42He elevates it to describe the objective removal of God's holy
- 20:46wrath against elect sinners. We must remember that God is the
- 20:50offended party here. Humans committed high treason
- 20:54against the Creator. Yet God takes the sovereign
- 20:57initiative to remove the legal barrier of our sin.
- 21:00And he does not do this by just sweeping the sin under the rug
- 21:03or lowering his standards. He cannot lower his standards.
- 21:06He does not negotiate with rebellion and he does not
- 21:09compromise his justice. He completely satisfies that
- 21:12justice in his son. It is fascinating that Paul did
- 21:15not use the word. He'll ask, Am I here?
- 21:17Right, which focuses purely on the sacrifice or the appeasement
- 21:20of wrath. He used Catalacho to highlight
- 21:23the resulting restored legal relationship of peace between
- 21:27the Creator and the creature. God is not reconciled to our
- 21:30sin. He reconciles sinners to Himself
- 21:32by dealing with sin in Christ. This reconciliation is anchored
- 21:36in the most concrete transaction in human history.
- 21:39This brings us to the Great Exchange, the true
- 21:41suteriological engine of global mission found in 2nd Corinthians
- 21:45521. For our sake He made him to be
- 21:49sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the
- 21:52righteousness of God. The sources call this the
- 21:55doctrine of double imputation. For you listening who might not
- 21:58be familiar with that term, let us break down the mechanism of
- 22:01double imputation. How does it actually work?
- 22:04Double imputation is the absolute bedrock of our standing
- 22:07before God. It works like a legal transfer
- 22:09in a courtroom or a massive transfer of funds in a bank
- 22:12account. First, consider Christ.
- 22:15He knew no sin. He was the spotless lamb,
- 22:17completely holy in thought, word and deed.
- 22:20Yet God made him to be sin. Now this does not mean Christ
- 22:24was infused with moral corruption or that he suddenly
- 22:27became a Sinner. No, it means our sin was legally
- 22:30credited or imputed to his account.
- 22:32The guilt and the legal liability of our rebellion were
- 22:35transferred to him. And he paid the penalty for that
- 22:37debt on the cross. Yes, this is known as His
- 22:40passive obedience. He endured the full, unmitigated
- 22:43cup of God's holy wrath, bearing the exact penalty we deserved.
- 22:47But if the transaction stopped there, we would only be neutral.
- 22:50We would be forgiven, but we would have no positive
- 22:53righteousness to stand before a holy God.
- 22:55Like a bank account that was millions of dollars in debt and
- 22:59someone paid off the debt, bringing the balance to zero.
- 23:02You are no longer in debt, but you were still broke.
- 23:05Exactly the right analogy, but the exchange goes both ways.
- 23:09The text says so that in him we might become the righteousness
- 23:13of God. The perfect lifetime obedience
- 23:16of Jesus Christ, His active fulfillment of the divine Law
- 23:20every single minute of His earthly life is legally credited
- 23:24to our account. Our bank balance does not just
- 23:26go to 0. It is filled with the infinite
- 23:29wealth of Christ's perfect righteousness.
- 23:31We stand before the holy judge, not just pardoned, but clothed
- 23:34in the flawless righteousness of the Son of God.
- 23:37Because of this highly specific, highly exclusive truth, the
- 23:40sources argue that global partnership cannot be built on
- 23:43ecumenical pluralism. We have to draw hard lines, the
- 23:46text insists. We must reject the prosperity
- 23:49gospel, which is basically a materialistic heresy that uses
- 23:53Jesus as a slot machine. And we must reject Roman
- 23:56Catholicism's denial of solafide justification by faith alone.
- 24:01True mission must terminate in the planting of local visible
- 24:04churches that hold to the uncompromised doctrines of
- 24:07grace. But I have to ask, doesn't this
- 24:09strict doctrinal stance hinder global unity?
- 24:12If we refuse to partner with groups that deviate on these
- 24:15points, aren't we fracturing the body of Christ?
- 24:18Well, might seem that way from a horizontal perspective if.
- 24:20Missionary in the global S refuses to work with a massive
- 24:23prosperity gospel network. Aren't they just isolating
- 24:27themselves? Unity built on theological
- 24:29compromise is a fragile illusion.
- 24:31True fellowship requires shared allegiance to the unsearchable
- 24:34riches of Christ. If we agree on sociology but
- 24:37disagree on the gospel, we have no basis for spiritual
- 24:40partnership. Let's bring the confession back
- 24:42in. The visible church as defined in
- 24:44Westminster Confession Chapter 25, consists of all those
- 24:47throughout the world that profess the true religion
- 24:50together with their children. To this Catholic, meaning
- 24:52universal, visible Church, Christ is given the ministry,
- 24:56oracles and ordinances of God. For the gathering and perfecting
- 24:59of the Saints. So we cannot sacrifice doctrinal
- 25:02clarity on the altar of global statistics.
- 25:04We cannot. The prosperity gospel tells
- 25:07people that God exists to give them earthly wealth and health.
- 25:11That is a Pagan lie draped in Christian terminology.
- 25:14It preys on the poorest people in the world.
- 25:17And regarding Roman Catholicism? By binding itself to the Council
- 25:20of Trent, it anathematizes the very doctrine of imputed
- 25:23righteousness we just discussed. They teach that justification is
- 25:26a process of infused grace and human cooperation.
- 25:30Not a forensic declaration based solely on Christ's imputed
- 25:33righteousness. True partnership must be
- 25:35strictly anchored in the historical confessions of the
- 25:38Reformation. If we lose the gospel, we have
- 25:40nothing left to export. So we have covered massive
- 25:43ground today. We have seen how the demographic
- 25:46shift in Christianity forces a total projection of corporate
- 25:50management and secular naturalism.
- 25:51The old map is dead. By adopting Paul's new creation,
- 25:54Eyesight, we rely solely on monarchistic grace and double
- 25:58imputation. We no longer view people
- 26:00according to the flesh as mere biological machines or
- 26:03demographic targets. We trust the ordinary means of
- 26:06grace, the preached Word, and the sacraments to accomplish
- 26:10God's sovereign decree even in the face of intense animistic
- 26:14fear. And all of this labor, all of
- 26:16this global mission, points toward a guaranteed conclusion.
- 26:20Look at the eschatological vision of Revelation Chapter 7,
- 26:23verses 9 and 10. The Apostle John sees a
- 26:26multitude from every tribe, language, people and nations
- 26:29standing before the throne and worshipping the Lamb.
- 26:31The end of history is already sovereignly guaranteed.
- 26:34God is not biting his nails wondering if His mission will
- 26:37succeed. Every sermon preached, every
- 26:39church planted, and every Sinner regenerated is a rehearsal for
- 26:43this guaranteed victory. The global church will be
- 26:45gathered precisely as God decreed from eternity past.
- 26:48Which leaves you with a heavy thought to consider.
- 26:50It does if you believe the final victory of the global church is
- 26:55already decreed by God. How does that free you from the
- 26:58anxiety of trying to produce spiritual results in your own
- 27:02daily interactions? You are free from the crushing
- 27:04weight of having to manufacture conversions.
- 27:07You can simply be faithful to the truth and trust the Spirit
