- 0:00Speaker 1: On remote Tahani Atoll in the South Pacific, preparations for
- 0:04Speaker 1: an atomic bomb test meet resistance when the island's residents
- 0:08Speaker 1: refuse evacuation from their ancestral home. This is Dimension X,
- 0:13Speaker 1: Episode 19, The Castaways. First heard on NBC August 11th, 1950,
- 0:20Speaker 1: Santos Ortega appears as General Frank Gadosh, overseeing Operation Destruction.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Daniel Occo and Greg Morton are also heard. The original
- 0:31Speaker 1: radio drama was written by Ernest Kenoy and George Lefferts,
- 0:36Speaker 1: with Jack Cuny directing and Van Woodward producing. Now, back
- 0:40Speaker 1: to the golden age of radio.
- 0:43Speaker 2: It's National Wheaties Week!
- 1:01Speaker 3: Yes, it's National Wheaties Week, and Wheaties present Dimension X.
- 1:11Speaker 4: On stage tonight, Dimension X, another in the Wheaties big
- 1:15Speaker 4: parade of exciting half-hour presentations.
- 1:19Speaker 3: It's National Wheaties Week. Yep, time to try Wheaties. If
- 1:23Speaker 3: you haven't had any for a while, try them now.
- 1:26Speaker 3: If you've been eating them right along, have an extra
- 1:28Speaker 3: bowl full for me. How about that? You know, I've
- 1:31Speaker 3: been talking about Wheaties all summer, saying, see how Wheaties
- 1:34Speaker 3: at 7 can help at 11.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Well, by golly, they can.
- 1:39Speaker 3: I get up to Wheaties, bananas on mine, thanks, and
- 1:42Speaker 3: I honestly feel as if I had more pep all morning.
- 1:45Speaker 3: And why not you? This is National Wheaties Week. Time
- 1:48Speaker 3: for you to have some Wheaties. Breakfast of champions. Oh,
- 1:52Speaker 3: go ahead, have some. It's National Wheaties Week.
- 2:04Speaker 5: Now, tonight's adventure into the world of the unknown. The
- 2:08Speaker 5: world of Dimension X. In the South Pacific, night comes
- 2:21Speaker 5: on rapidly. The sun dips below the flat horizon. The
- 2:26Speaker 5: sea is crimson for a moment, and then night falls.
- 2:30Speaker 5: But on Tahani Atoll, giant arc lights turn night into day.
- 2:34Speaker 5: Across the waters of the lagoon within the barrier reef,
- 2:37Speaker 5: launches and tugs skitter back and forth, while on the
- 2:40Speaker 5: curving half-moon of the island, army trucks and jeeps scuttle
- 2:43Speaker 5: down the rough roads bulldozed by the Seabees just six
- 2:46Speaker 5: weeks ago. A low Quonset hub stands near the beach,
- 2:50Speaker 5: surrounded by tangled wire. This is the preliminary command post.
- 2:54Speaker 5: And inside is General Frank Gaydash, field director of the test.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Operation Destruction.
- 3:07Speaker 6: Well, everything on schedule, General Gaydash. Radiological survey is complete.
- 3:12Speaker 6: Instruments placement check.
- 3:13Speaker 4: Get my navy and tell them HR is as ordered.
- 3:16Speaker 4: Send a periodic time check to Air Force and EWINT
- 3:18Speaker 4: talk and observation control on the Missouri.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 3:20Speaker 4: I want a complete roster check on all personnel before HR.
- 3:23Speaker 4: That test bomb is going off at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning.
- 3:25Speaker 4: Even if there's a whole battalion stranded on the target vessels.
- 3:28Speaker 4: You see that everybody's clear.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Yes, sir. Oh, uh, Nate Cohen wants to see you.
- 3:34Speaker 4: Who the devil is he?
- 3:35Speaker 2: AP man.
- 3:36Speaker 6: He's been selected by the press radio pool to interview you.
- 3:39Speaker 4: I haven't got time. Tell him to speak to Major Breedenburg.
- 3:41Speaker 4: He's the PRO.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Well, I think perhaps you'd better see him, sir.
- 3:44Speaker 6: The directive on public relations from Washington was very clear.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Oh, what blazes am I supposed to run a bomb
- 3:50Speaker 4: test and play mother hen to a bunch of reporters?
- 3:51Speaker 2: Washington said.
- 3:52Speaker 4: All right, all right, all right. Bring him in.
- 3:54Speaker 7: Raleigh.
- 3:55Speaker 8: Yes, sir?
- 3:56Speaker 4: Get me some black coffee.
- 3:57Speaker 7: Yes, sir.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Uh, this is Mr. Cohen, uh, General Gaydox.
- 4:01Speaker 9: How do you do, General?
- 4:02Speaker 4: Lousy, as a matter of fact.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Is that an official statement?
- 4:05Speaker 8: No.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Run some of that world is at the crossroads baloney.
- 4:10Speaker 2: I wrote that yesterday.
- 4:12Speaker 9: General, what effect do you think the new bomb will
- 4:14Speaker 9: have in the world situation?
- 4:15Speaker 4: I can't tell you that, even if I knew. My
- 4:17Speaker 4: job is to set the blaster thing off, see that
- 4:19Speaker 4: nobody gets hurt, and collect the data.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Can I speak with you for a moment, sir?
- 4:22Speaker 4: Later, Alan.
- 4:24Speaker 10: Go ahead, Cone.
- 4:24Speaker 9: Can you release anything on the scientific principles involved?
- 4:27Speaker 4: I don't even understand it myself.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Wait a minute.
- 4:30Speaker 11: I'll come over.
- 4:31Speaker 6: Yes?
- 4:32Speaker 4: Come over here a moment, will you? Come on, this
- 4:35Speaker 4: is Dr. Fred Muller.
- 4:36Speaker 2: How do you do?
- 4:37Speaker 4: Civilian scientific director. He's the only one who knows what's
- 4:39Speaker 4: inside that warhead.
- 4:40Speaker 2: How do you do, Mr.
- 4:41Speaker 12: Kahn?
- 4:42Speaker 4: How about a statement, doctor?
- 4:43Speaker 12: Well, I'm afraid all I'm allowed to say is that
- 4:45Speaker 12: the bomb is new. It's extremely powerful. And off the record,
- 4:49Speaker 12: it's very tricky and dangerous. Well, what'll happen if it
- 4:52Speaker 12: goes off prematurely?
- 4:53Speaker 2: I don't think we have to worry about that.
- 4:56Speaker 12: In fact, we wouldn't even know about it, if you'll
- 4:59Speaker 12: excuse me now.
- 5:00Speaker 9: How about the natives?
- 5:01Speaker 4: What about them?
- 5:02Speaker 9: They're going to be evacuated from the island?
- 5:04Speaker 4: They already have been.
- 5:05Speaker 2: General Gaydar?
- 5:06Speaker 9: I saw the Tahani chief outside when I came in.
- 5:08Speaker 9: The whole tribe's out there squatting down at the motor
- 5:10Speaker 9: pool having a conference.
- 5:11Speaker 10: What?
- 5:12Speaker 6: Alan, I've been trying to tell you, sir, the Tahani
- 5:15Speaker 6: are still on the island.
- 5:17Speaker 2: What?
- 5:18Speaker 4: The LCTs are ready, aren't they?
- 5:19Speaker 2: Yes, sir, but they won't go. They refuse.
- 5:22Speaker 4: The schedule called for their evacuation to Milani three hours ago.
- 5:25Speaker 6: I realize that, sir, but I hope we could still
- 5:27Speaker 6: get them off without violence.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Look, Alan, they're either on the island or off. Wait
- 5:31Speaker 4: a minute. Go on, that's all.
- 5:33Speaker 9: What are you going to do about the natives, General?
- 5:36Speaker 4: I'll issue a statement later.
- 5:37Speaker 9: You going to force them?
- 5:38Speaker 4: Go on, out. I haven't got time. All right, General.
- 5:41Speaker 9: Thanks. Thanks a lot.
- 5:44Speaker 4: All right, Alan, let's have it.
- 5:45Speaker 8: Well, sir.
- 5:46Speaker 6: The Tahani have been kicking up a fuss all along.
- 5:49Speaker 4: They won't leave.
- 5:50Speaker 2: They won't?
- 5:52Speaker 4: Do they know what's going to happen to the island?
- 5:54Speaker 4: Do they know we're going to blow it higher than
- 5:55Speaker 4: a kite?
- 5:56Speaker 2: I told the chief, and he just said they won't go.
- 5:58Speaker 4: They'll go, all right, if I have to... Get him
- 6:02Speaker 4: in here.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Chief?
- 6:03Speaker 4: And the lieutenant who interprets.
- 6:04Speaker 7: Yes, sir.
- 6:06Speaker 4: How do you like that, Dr.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Muller?
- 6:08Speaker 4: I haven't got enough trouble.
- 6:09Speaker 12: You know, I feel rather sorry for the Tahani.
- 6:12Speaker 2: It can't make much sense to them. We arrive and
- 6:15Speaker 2: tell them they've got to get out.
- 6:17Speaker 4: I appreciate your finer feelings, Muller. But I can't let
- 6:20Speaker 4: a hundred half-naked Kanakas hold up the bomb test.
- 6:22Speaker 12: They're not Kanakas, General. Captain Cook discovered the island in 1788.
- 6:26Speaker 12: What's the difference?
- 6:27Speaker 2: Lieutenant Gilbert reporting, sir. Ma'a Noah.
- 6:30Speaker 4: I haven't got time for ceremony, Gilbert. Tell the chief
- 6:32Speaker 4: he and his tribe have to get off the island.
- 6:34Speaker 4: We're providing homes for the Mamalani.
- 6:36Speaker 13: Translate, Gilbert. The chief says, you do not understand. My
- 6:47Speaker 13: Lani is a bad island. My people have lived on
- 6:50Speaker 13: the Lani from the time that our ancestors were cast
- 6:53Speaker 13: away on the island. The spirits of our ancestors are
- 6:58Speaker 13: buried in the earth. Our fathers are buried here.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Our fathers' fathers.
- 7:02Speaker 4: If he thinks I'm going to move his graveyard, he's crazy.
- 7:05Speaker 13: In our ancestors' time, the Tawani came in a great
- 7:09Speaker 13: bird canoe. We were cast away on this island, and
- 7:13Speaker 13: we have made it our home. What right have you
- 7:17Speaker 13: now to carry us over the sea... to a strange
- 7:20Speaker 13: land where we would die weeping for our homes.
- 7:24Speaker 2: We will not go.
- 7:26Speaker 12: By the water of Babylon, there we sat down and
- 7:29Speaker 12: we wept when we remembered Zion.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Thank you. Thank you, Dr.
- 7:32Speaker 8: Muller.
- 7:33Speaker 4: You're a great help. Gilbert.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Yes, sir?
- 7:37Speaker 4: Tell him I have no choice. He's got till midnight
- 7:39Speaker 4: to get his tribe on board those LCTs peacefully, or
- 7:41Speaker 4: I'll have the Marine Detachment carry them on board. Isn't
- 7:44Speaker 4: that rather harsh, General?
- 7:46Speaker 12: After all, the justice is on their side. We're preparing
- 7:49Speaker 12: to blow up their island, and we haven't asked.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Them about it.
- 7:52Speaker 7: Dr.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Muller, you will kindly confine yourself to the scientific aspect
- 7:55Speaker 4: of this operation. I'll take care of administrative matters. Well,
- 7:57Speaker 4: if you could explain to them what is at stake here...
- 7:59Speaker 4: Any further explaining I've got to do, I'll do with
- 8:01Speaker 4: the Marine Detachment. I'm not going to hold up my
- 8:03Speaker 4: schedule to coddle a hundred barefoot natives.
- 8:05Speaker 13: Well, Gilbert?
- 8:06Speaker 2: I told him.
- 8:07Speaker 4: All right, get him out of here. I've heard enough.
- 8:09Speaker 4: What the devil is that?
- 8:13Speaker 2: Some kind of a curse, sir. I can catch some
- 8:16Speaker 2: of it. The island will remember.
- 8:19Speaker 13: The tears of its children and punish the invaders. The
- 8:23Speaker 13: great destroyer will not destroy. And the evil man who
- 8:28Speaker 13: is the chief will travel far through the blackness of night.
- 8:32Speaker 13: Even as the children of the island end, so will he.
- 8:35Speaker 4: All right, Gilbert, take him away.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Colonel Allen, get a detail from the Marine Detachment with
- 8:41Speaker 4: tear gas and small arms down to the motor pool.
- 8:44Speaker 4: One hour, have those natives on that transport. I don't
- 8:46Speaker 4: care how they do it. Is that my coffee, Varely? Yes, sir.
- 8:49Speaker 12: They must know about the bomb. The great destroyer will
- 8:53Speaker 12: not destroy.
- 8:54Speaker 4: You worried about that curse?
- 8:56Speaker 2: Well, I should think you might be. He threatened you personally.
- 8:59Speaker 2: If I were you, I'd carry a pistol till they
- 9:01Speaker 2: got off the island.
- 9:03Speaker 12: The chief looked as if he'd cheerfully strangled you with
- 9:05Speaker 12: his bare hands.
- 9:06Speaker 4: I'm supposed to end the way they do, huh? What's that?
- 9:11Speaker 10: Oh, probably the Tahanis saying goodbye to their island. I
- 9:14Speaker 10: think I'll go down to the motor pool.
- 9:15Speaker 4: Well, stay out of the way and get back here
- 9:17Speaker 4: in an hour. We've got to have this wrapped up
- 9:18Speaker 4: and headquarters moved out to the Missouri by dawn.
- 9:21Speaker 14: Baby, an instrument room checking in, sir.
- 9:35Speaker 4: That's the last. Have the Missouri take over control and
- 9:38Speaker 4: central my jeep.
- 9:39Speaker 10: Yes, sir.
- 9:40Speaker 4: Are the LCTs there standing by for those natives?
- 9:42Speaker 11: Yes, sir.
- 9:42Speaker 2: They're on the beach.
- 9:43Speaker 10: The bomb unit is assembled in place, General.
- 9:47Speaker 7: 23-30.
- 9:47Speaker 4: Right on the nose. Robin, start evacuation procedure.
- 9:53Speaker 2: The Tehani have stopped.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Allen's probably moving them out to the beach. Check in
- 9:57Speaker 4: with the Navy and Air Force, Raleigh.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 10:01Speaker 8: What's that?
- 10:03Speaker 2: It's coming from the beach.
- 10:04Speaker 4: The Tahani are making trouble.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Come on.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Joe.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Joe Gilbert, what is it?
- 10:11Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 10:12Speaker 12: Colonel Allen ordered the Marines in, sir.
- 10:15Speaker 4: What happened? What happened, man?
- 10:16Speaker 2: The natives. They just got up and started marching.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Did they embark?
- 10:20Speaker 2: Oh, you don't understand, sir.
- 10:23Speaker 4: They marched up the cliff and right off into the lagoon.
- 10:25Speaker 7: What?
- 10:26Speaker 12: All of them.
- 10:27Speaker 2: The women and the kids, too.
- 10:28Speaker 5: They.
- 10:29Speaker 2: They didn't even try to swim, sir.
- 10:30Speaker 4: What were you doing all this time, just standing around
- 10:32Speaker 4: with your thumb in your mouth? Well, it was a
- 10:34Speaker 4: Marine detachment. We couldn't stop them, sir. They just walked
- 10:37Speaker 4: over the cliff.
- 10:38Speaker 2: They didn't even scream, not even the kids.
- 10:41Speaker 13: We sent the crash boats out, but we couldn't get
- 10:44Speaker 13: any of them out.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Crazy idiots. Were any of the reporters there?
- 10:48Speaker 13: Uh, Cohen and a life photographer.
- 10:50Speaker 4: Get his film and hold it till I release it.
- 10:52Speaker 2: What are you going to do, General?
- 10:53Speaker 4: Postpone H.R.? It's too late for that now. Calling H.R.
- 10:56Speaker 4: off isn't going to bring the natives back. But 100 men, women,
- 10:59Speaker 4: and children just walking into the water.
- 11:01Speaker 2: It's horrible.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Look, I'm not happy about it either, but there's nothing
- 11:03Speaker 4: we can do now. I gave them a chance to
- 11:05Speaker 4: get off. They didn't want to take it. That's their
- 11:07Speaker 4: hard luck, not mine.
- 11:08Speaker 2: I hope you're right. What do you mean by that?
- 11:12Speaker 10: Oh, I was just thinking about the curse the chief
- 11:15Speaker 10: put on you. Even as the children of the island end,
- 11:18Speaker 10: so will he. That's what he said to you, General.
- 11:21Speaker 2: I heard him. Keep waiting, General.
- 11:22Speaker 12: The great destroyer will not destroy. That must mean the bomb.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Don't worry, Dr.
- 11:27Speaker 7: Muller.
- 11:28Speaker 4: It'll take more than a mumbo-jumbo curse from a native
- 11:30Speaker 4: witch doctor to stop this operation. At each hour, that
- 11:34Speaker 4: bomb goes off.
- 11:35Speaker 2: The End There's now H hour minus one minute, 30 seconds.
- 11:51Speaker 8: H minus one, 30.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Radio screens hooked in, sir.
- 11:55Speaker 4: All right, check control stations.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Observation station one.
- 11:58Speaker 9: Observation station one, check.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Radiation station.
- 12:02Speaker 4: Radiation control, check.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Testifying.
- 12:04Speaker 4: Observation station two.
- 12:05Speaker 12: Right, General.
- 12:05Speaker 10: Observation station two, check.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Damage control station.
- 12:09Speaker 9: Damage control, check.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Communications. Communications, check. All checked in.
- 12:15Speaker 8: There's H minus one minute, H minus one.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Take a good look at that island on the screen, Muller.
- 12:24Speaker 2: When you throw that key, it just won't be there anymore.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Nothing but an atom mushroom over the lagoon.
- 12:29Speaker 2: It's quite a funeral pyre for the Tahani.
- 12:32Speaker 4: Stubborn idiots. No way it serves them right, Muller. They
- 12:37Speaker 4: can't get in the way of progress.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Progress? I wonder if it is, General.
- 12:40Speaker 12: It's H minus 30 seconds, H hour minus 30, 29, 28.
- 12:45Speaker 10: 27, 26... The Great Destroyer.
- 12:49Speaker 2: That's what he called the bomb.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Call it, Miller.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Allen, report. All checked in. Camera's running.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Sound fire warning. Stand by for firing.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Ready, Miller?
- 13:01Speaker 7: Ready.
- 13:02Speaker 10: 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5.
- 13:11Speaker 7: 4, 3, 2, 1, fire!
- 13:23Speaker 2: General, it didn't go off.
- 13:26Speaker 7: Really?
- 13:27Speaker 2: The bomb didn't go off.
- 13:28Speaker 8: Really?
- 13:29Speaker 4: Signal and standby. Condition red. Island check readings. Muller, what's wrong?
- 13:34Speaker 4: What happened?
- 13:35Speaker 2: I don't know. The bomb didn't go off.
- 13:37Speaker 4: What do you mean? Why did it go off?
- 13:42Speaker 2: I don't know, except for one thing.
- 13:44Speaker 12: The Tahani chief said the great destroyer would not destroy.
- 13:47Speaker 4: It didn't, General.
- 13:48Speaker 2: The bomb didn't go off.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Dimension X will continue in just a moment. It's National
- 14:07Speaker 4: Wheaties Week.
- 14:09Speaker 3: And from behind the scene in the radio studio, here
- 14:12Speaker 3: comes one of Hollywood's foremost radio producers, Mr. Joe Parker,
- 14:16Speaker 3: stepping out of the control room to help celebrate National
- 14:20Speaker 3: Wheaties Week.
- 14:21Speaker 7: Mr.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Parker puts on radio programs, and he's a visitor to
- 14:25Speaker 3: Dimension X tonight. His regular program for Wheaties is Sarah's
- 14:28Speaker 3: Private Keeper. Joe's a regular guy. He sits there in
- 14:32Speaker 3: the glass cage called the control room, running his show.
- 14:36Speaker 3: But right now, here he is at the microphone to
- 14:38Speaker 3: say his say about Wheaties.
- 14:41Speaker 11: Ready, Joe?
- 14:42Speaker 2: Thanks, Frank.
- 14:44Speaker 7: You know, folks, I sit there in the glass cage,
- 14:46Speaker 7: as Frank calls it, and I have to stop my
- 14:48Speaker 7: programs long enough for him to talk about Wheaties. But
- 14:52Speaker 7: you know, I don't mind. I kind of like this
- 14:55Speaker 7: talk about Wheaties and milk and fruit. That's a lot
- 14:58Speaker 7: of good eating. And I like the idea of celebrating
- 15:01Speaker 7: National Wheaties Week, too. You know, we enjoy putting radio
- 15:05Speaker 7: programs on for your entertainment. And we'd enjoy knowing that, well,
- 15:10Speaker 7: that you're going to try Wheaties because of us. I
- 15:13Speaker 7: hope you'll get Wheaties tomorrow and have some. The whole family.
- 15:17Speaker 7: Matter of fact, I think I'll join you. Thank you,
- 15:20Speaker 7: producer Joe Parker. If you like this program, friend, get
- 15:24Speaker 7: some Wheaties and help celebrate National Wheaties Week.
- 15:48Speaker 9: How about it, General?
- 15:48Speaker 4: What happened?
- 15:49Speaker 2: You got a statement?
- 15:50Speaker 4: Nothing you can use, Cone. Not until we find out
- 15:53Speaker 4: what went wrong. Why don't you come aboard this ship?
- 15:57Speaker 2: I walked on.
- 15:59Speaker 4: You don't know why the bomb failed, huh? It didn't fail.
- 16:01Speaker 2: It just didn't go off. Say, what's that tank thing
- 16:05Speaker 2: on deck, General?
- 16:06Speaker 4: Undersea salvage unit Mark IV. They call it an undersea crawler.
- 16:10Speaker 4: Somebody going down? That bomb is down there in the
- 16:13Speaker 4: lagoon somewhere. Could go off at any second. Somebody has
- 16:17Speaker 4: to go down, find it, and disarm it.
- 16:19Speaker 2: That's a lovely job.
- 16:21Speaker 9: Who's elected?
- 16:23Speaker 2: I am. Dr.
- 16:26Speaker 7: Muller.
- 16:27Speaker 4: He's the only one who knows how to dismantle it.
- 16:29Speaker 4: The crawler's ready, General. All right, come on, Muller.
- 16:35Speaker 2: I'm ready.
- 16:36Speaker 4: Alan, as soon as we hit shallow water, get those
- 16:38Speaker 4: gates open. We'll pull the crawler out, then you get
- 16:40Speaker 4: away in a hurry. That bomb goes off while we're
- 16:42Speaker 4: working on it. I don't want any casualties.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Inside, Muller.
- 16:46Speaker 12: All right.
- 16:51Speaker 11: I'm in.
- 16:52Speaker 4: Remember, get this LCT out of the lagoon in a hurry.
- 16:55Speaker 4: You got that, Alan? You take your orders from Admiral Yancey.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Yes, sir. And good luck.
- 17:01Speaker 4: Closing the hatch.
- 17:06Speaker 8: Get the sonar and gaga counter warmed up, Muller. Right.
- 17:10Speaker 10: I was just thinking of something, General. That curse, part
- 17:15Speaker 10: of it came true. The bomb didn't go off.
- 17:18Speaker 7: Well?
- 17:19Speaker 10: The second part of that curse was that you would
- 17:22Speaker 10: end where they ended, and that was at the bottom
- 17:25Speaker 10: of the lagoon.
- 17:25Speaker 8: What are you trying to do, Muller? Nothing, I.
- 17:29Speaker 10: I was just thinking this crawler is going to take
- 17:32Speaker 10: us right down there where the Tahani died.
- 17:34Speaker 8: I'm not worried about a handful of dead natives, mother.
- 17:37Speaker 8: I'm worried about that bomb. Okay, they're opening the gate.
- 17:45Speaker 8: Let's go.
- 17:45Speaker 4: Let's go. USU-4 to control. Depth 50 feet, bottom sandy.
- 18:11Speaker 4: Dropping off sharp. Anything on sonar, Muller?
- 18:14Speaker 8: A school of fish. Nothing down the crawlable, fool? Only
- 18:18Speaker 8: in the tank at New London.
- 18:24Speaker 15: I think I've got a Geiger reading dead ahead.
- 18:28Speaker 4: Hang on.
- 18:30Speaker 15: We're going up over the reef. It must be the bomb,
- 18:37Speaker 15: all right. The Geiger counter's clocking like a pulled hen.
- 18:40Speaker 15: Keep an eye on the front vision plate. If you
- 18:43Speaker 15: run over the bomb, we're liable to set it off.
- 18:48Speaker 15: I think I'm getting something on Sonar.
- 18:52Speaker 4: Left of point. USU-4 to control.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Over.
- 18:59Speaker 4: USU-4 to control.
- 19:01Speaker 13: Over.
- 19:04Speaker 4: That's a fine note.
- 19:06Speaker 8: Radio's out. Dead ahead. It looks too large to be
- 19:13Speaker 8: the bomb.
- 19:14Speaker 4: Can't see much in the forward vision, Blake.
- 19:16Speaker 8: Wait a minute.
- 19:18Speaker 10: That's part of the reef ahead. That's where the Geiger
- 19:21Speaker 10: reading indicated. The bomb must have settled in a hole
- 19:24Speaker 10: in the reef. We'll have to go after it in
- 19:26Speaker 10: diving suits. Suits are in the locker. Let's get this
- 19:31Speaker 10: over with.
- 19:32Speaker 4: The less time I spend down here waiting for that
- 19:34Speaker 4: bomb to blow, the better I like it.
- 19:38Speaker 8: Eddie Miller, grab your helmet.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Getting me all right on your headset? Okay, I'm gonna
- 19:57Speaker 2: fill my lock. Okay. Let's go. This isn't like that
- 20:12Speaker 2: diving tank in New London.
- 20:14Speaker 4: Look out for that car.
- 20:15Speaker 2: It'll cut you to ribbons. There's a.
- 20:19Speaker 8: There's an opening of some sort there.
- 20:21Speaker 2: I'd like us to light up.
- 20:23Speaker 4: See if we can get a gaga reading out of
- 20:24Speaker 4: that opening.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Just a.
- 20:25Speaker 8: Over there.
- 20:30Speaker 2: It's down there, all right.
- 20:31Speaker 5: Careful.
- 20:33Speaker 2: I'll go down first. See anything down there?
- 20:38Speaker 12: Well, uh.
- 20:38Speaker 4: Get down here fast.
- 20:40Speaker 11: What is it?
- 20:41Speaker 12: You find something?
- 20:42Speaker 4: The bottom of this hole. It's metal on the sides.
- 20:45Speaker 10: But it's the coral reef.
- 20:46Speaker 12: Look.
- 20:47Speaker 4: Well, the joints.
- 20:49Speaker 7: There's a house plate of some kind.
- 20:51Speaker 4: Look out above us. It's closing.
- 20:53Speaker 8: Love it.
- 20:54Speaker 2: It's too late.
- 20:57Speaker 8: A little hatch.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Just lit over the top.
- 20:59Speaker 5: This is impossible.
- 21:00Speaker 2: What's going on?
- 21:02Speaker 4: Like an ally. The water's being pumped out.
- 21:12Speaker 8: General, do you realize what this means?
- 21:15Speaker 2: I'm not sure.
- 21:18Speaker 4: There's another door opening.
- 21:22Speaker 8: Help.
- 21:25Speaker 2: It's a passageway. What do we do now?
- 21:29Speaker 4: There isn't much to do. We can take off our helmets, though.
- 21:33Speaker 2: The dial shows good air. All right.
- 21:40Speaker 4: Come on.
- 21:44Speaker 2: What is this?
- 21:45Speaker 8: Undersea fort?
- 21:46Speaker 2: What's it doing here? What does it mean?
- 21:50Speaker 4: Whatever it is, our bomb must be down here.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Wait.
- 21:56Speaker 4: There's someone there.
- 21:58Speaker 10: I can't see.
- 21:59Speaker 2: There's a shadow. Who is it? Who's that?
- 22:04Speaker 8: Mahanua, Dr. Mother.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Welcome to our ship. We have been waiting for you. General,
- 22:12Speaker 2: it can't be. Did you see it? It's the Tani chief.
- 22:30Speaker 2: How long has the undersea crawler been down, Varely?
- 22:33Speaker 4: Four hours, sir.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Two since we lost contact. Keep trying.
- 22:36Speaker 7: Yes, sir.
- 22:39Speaker 2: I've given them enough time. I'm going to send another
- 22:41Speaker 2: crawler down. What do you figure happened to them, Colonel? Well,
- 22:45Speaker 2: there are a lot of things. Hey, how did you
- 22:48Speaker 2: get in here? I walked in.
- 22:50Speaker 9: When are you going to release this, Colonel? It's the
- 22:52Speaker 9: biggest story since the election. The bomb at Dud, Dr. Muller,
- 22:55Speaker 9: General Gaydash dead.
- 22:56Speaker 6: They're not dead.
- 22:57Speaker 2: At least we don't know they are.
- 22:59Speaker 4: As long as the bomb doesn't go off, there's still
- 23:01Speaker 4: a chance it's something else.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Alarm. Morale, condition red.
- 23:10Speaker 4: Gilbert, radiation control into action. Get the hot squad into
- 23:14Speaker 4: Tejani Lagoon as soon as it's cleared.
- 23:16Speaker 2: And get me a PT board with radiation screens.
- 23:18Speaker 4: What is it, Colonel?
- 23:19Speaker 8: What happened?
- 23:19Speaker 2: The bomb must have blown.
- 23:21Speaker 4: What about Muller and the general?
- 23:22Speaker 2: If they were down in that lagoon, you guess.
- 23:41Speaker 8: Radiation reading 75 and steady.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Now take her in as close to the beach as
- 23:46Speaker 2: you can.
- 23:47Speaker 12: Steady as she goes.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Is there any danger of more explosions? No, when she goes,
- 23:55Speaker 2: she goes.
- 23:56Speaker 10: Radiation 82.
- 23:57Speaker 2: The danger is radioactivity.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Radioactivity.
- 24:00Speaker 6: Our shields aren't much good, but we've got to pick
- 24:02Speaker 6: up the recording instruments as soon after the blast as possible.
- 24:05Speaker 8: Radiation 93.5.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Well, that's still safe. Hey, Cohen, is there something on
- 24:12Speaker 2: the beach there?
- 24:13Speaker 9: Oh, yeah, looks like a body. Maybe you blew one
- 24:15Speaker 9: of the Tahani back out of the lagoon.
- 24:17Speaker 2: No, no, no, it's moving. Gilbert, glasses. Yes, sir. It's
- 24:22Speaker 2: a man, all right.
- 24:23Speaker 10: Head into the beach.
- 24:24Speaker 12: Aye, aye, sir.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Who is it, Colonel? I can't tell, but he's in
- 24:28Speaker 2: a diving suit.
- 24:30Speaker 6: It's either Muller or General Gaydash.
- 24:42Speaker 2: No radiation burns. Superficial bruises. Mild shock. He'll be all right, Colonel.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Can he talk?
- 24:52Speaker 4: For a while.
- 24:53Speaker 2: I'm going to give him a sedative shortly. Muller... Muller,
- 24:59Speaker 2: what happened? How did the bomb go off? Oh, you didn't.
- 25:07Speaker 2: He's still out of his head. Quiet, Colin, quiet. Go on, Dr. Muller.
- 25:11Speaker 2: What did you find? A ship. A giant metal ship.
- 25:20Speaker 2: There in the lagoon. A submarine? No, no, no. It was.
- 25:24Speaker 2: It was a spaceship. Camouflaged right next to the reef.
- 25:28Speaker 12: What?
- 25:28Speaker 7: What?
- 25:30Speaker 12: When we went inside... We found the Tahani chief... And
- 25:37Speaker 12: all the tribe... Alive.
- 25:40Speaker 2: What are you saying? They drowned in the lagoon. I
- 25:43Speaker 2: saw them.
- 25:44Speaker 12: No, they didn't commit suicide as we thought. They just
- 25:47Speaker 12: dived underwater into the rocket.
- 25:50Speaker 2: A rocket? Built by Polynesian savages? But they're not savages. They're... Castaways...
- 26:00Speaker 2: They're from another planet. Don't you understand?
- 26:04Speaker 12: Their spaceship was wrecked here 400 years ago. They've been
- 26:08Speaker 12: waiting ever since for a chance to go home.
- 26:11Speaker 2: This boy's out of his mind. You better put him
- 26:13Speaker 2: under the sedative, Doctor.
- 26:15Speaker 12: It's true.
- 26:17Speaker 2: They'd exhausted their fuel.
- 26:20Speaker 12: They couldn't find anything here on Earth to replace it
- 26:24Speaker 12: until we developed atomic power.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Atomic power? You mean they stole our bomb?
- 26:31Speaker 12: They made me dismantle it for them at the point
- 26:33Speaker 12: of a gun. And then just before they blasted off,
- 26:36Speaker 12: they let me go.
- 26:37Speaker 2: But what about the general? You mean they killed him?
- 26:45Speaker 12: You don't understand. I said I dismantled that bomb at
- 26:50Speaker 12: the point of a gun. It was General Gaydash. who
- 26:56Speaker 12: was holding it.
- 26:56Speaker 8: What's that?
- 26:57Speaker 4: Yes, yes.
- 26:58Speaker 2: He was one of them.
- 27:00Speaker 12: One of their spies, sent out to bring back the
- 27:02Speaker 12: rocket fuel they needed. And now, after 400 years, the
- 27:13Speaker 12: castaways are going home.
- 27:19Speaker 8: THE END.
