- 2:17Speaker 4: Kicking Cancer fundraiser, brought to you by Better Holmes and
- 2:21Speaker 4: Gardens Real Estate chumchil Here to talk about it, Josh
- 2:23Speaker 4: Scott and Margaret Osborne.
- 2:24Speaker 6: How you doing, good morning.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Thank you for both for me. Now now again. With
- 2:28Speaker 4: your company, everybody is named Josh.
- 2:30Speaker 6: Right, yes, yes, we have a couple except me.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Okay, well no that's what I said, because yeah, we
- 2:35Speaker 4: originally had one of the other josh Is scheduled and
- 2:37Speaker 4: you stepped up to the plate and I said, you
- 2:40Speaker 4: will be known as Josh from that point on.
- 2:42Speaker 6: Okay it Josh.
- 2:43Speaker 4: It's kind of like our companies with Dave's. You know,
- 2:45Speaker 4: we got a a Jecklan, Alan Wilson h and Weekly.
- 2:50Speaker 4: So everybody's a Dave. Everybody in your company is a Josh.
- 2:53Speaker 2: That's it.
- 2:54Speaker 4: That's it, all right, talk about the event, give us
- 2:56Speaker 4: to the overview, and then we'll break down specifically either
- 2:58Speaker 4: one of you.
- 2:58Speaker 7: Well, we we raised money for cancer. Obviously, it's kicking
- 3:01Speaker 7: cancer and it goes towards the people in our company
- 3:04Speaker 7: and their families. And like Josh said earlier, I love
- 3:07Speaker 7: that he said this. We help so many families get
- 3:09Speaker 7: into homes and you know, put them in positions to
- 3:12Speaker 7: better themselves. So we're just asking the community to help
- 3:14Speaker 7: us as well.
- 3:15Speaker 4: I mean, that's it's about. It's kind of a cliche,
- 3:18Speaker 4: but it's about giving back. Yeah, that's exactly what it is.
- 3:21Speaker 8: This thing is go ahead to say, as a company,
- 3:23Speaker 8: we try to give back all year long, and you know,
- 3:25Speaker 8: this is the one time of year we ask our customers,
- 3:28Speaker 8: our family, our affiliates to help us.
- 3:30Speaker 4: So this has been going on, I think for fourteen years.
- 3:32Speaker 4: I'm not sure that you guys have been involved in
- 3:34Speaker 4: the entire time, but.
- 3:35Speaker 6: Quite that long. But I know the history of it
- 3:37Speaker 6: started out as a spaghetti dinner.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Okay, one simple spaghetti dinner.
- 3:40Speaker 8: Take it from there, yep, and it's turned into you know,
- 3:43Speaker 8: we'll have the whole upstairs of the Little Creek Country Club.
- 3:46Speaker 8: We've got food, drink, we've got DJ killer, Killer Killer,
- 3:51Speaker 8: silent auction. We've got everything from paid airbnb, states, unique
- 3:56Speaker 8: spots all over the state. We've got a scenic small
- 4:00Speaker 8: airplane ride around Charleston so you can see the city
- 4:02Speaker 8: from about fifteen hundred feet.
- 4:04Speaker 6: And last year we had killer luggage. We have all
- 4:07Speaker 6: kinds of stuff.
- 4:08Speaker 7: It's so much fun with food, drinks, music, dancing. You
- 4:12Speaker 7: can't you can't be dead.
- 4:13Speaker 4: I mean, it's as you said, this thing's been going
- 4:15Speaker 4: on for fourteen years, and I just think it's amazing
- 4:17Speaker 4: when you say that somebody had an idea at one point,
- 4:19Speaker 4: let's have a spaghetti dinner, and then it turned into this.
- 4:22Speaker 4: I mean, I mean, how many people attend this thing?
- 4:24Speaker 7: I mean hundreds, hundreds.
- 4:26Speaker 6: We're pushing about two hundred now.
- 4:28Speaker 8: Last year we were playing around one eighty and uh
- 4:30Speaker 8: and we're doing better and better every year. We've we've
- 4:33Speaker 8: kind of changed how some of the stuff operates. We've
- 4:35Speaker 8: pulled in some help, and we're this is the biggest
- 4:40Speaker 8: funds we've raised yet this so far for this.
- 4:42Speaker 4: And talk about how the funds are utilized. You've touched
- 4:45Speaker 4: on a little bit, but how the horror funds utilized.
- 4:47Speaker 7: So people that are affected by it that are directly
- 4:50Speaker 7: related to us and the families and the company. They'll
- 4:53Speaker 7: send a letter in and then the committee votes on
- 4:55Speaker 7: it and then we just like get the funds that way.
- 4:57Speaker 8: It might be the sister of an agent, it might
- 4:59Speaker 8: be the son or or a parent of an agent,
- 5:02Speaker 8: or might be an affiliate with the company, you know,
- 5:05Speaker 8: somebody that helps us lend so people can get into homes.
- 5:08Speaker 8: So we we try to keep it close to the
- 5:10Speaker 8: vest and help the people.
- 5:11Speaker 4: That help us. That's what it's all about again. Uh,
- 5:14Speaker 4: it's a it's a fantastic event and for the social
- 5:17Speaker 4: scene in Charleston, it's one of the bigger events too
- 5:20Speaker 4: because it's I mean, obviously people are there because they
- 5:22Speaker 4: want to help. But there's nothing wrong with a good time,
- 5:24Speaker 4: especially on Thursday night, way to kick off the weekend. Yeah,
- 5:26Speaker 4: that's right with with music and get in. You mentioned
- 5:30Speaker 4: the auction, but let's talk about some of the party
- 5:32Speaker 4: aspects of it.
- 5:33Speaker 8: We have a great djuh full dance floor set up.
- 5:36Speaker 8: We plan to have fun for a couple hours and
- 5:38Speaker 8: uh and make the best of it.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Yeah, And I think it's great again because the way
- 5:45Speaker 4: that you're doing this, because this is it's kind of
- 5:47Speaker 4: a unique thing, uh to to. I mean, we hear
- 5:50Speaker 4: about raising money for cancer all the time, and that's
- 5:53Speaker 4: that's all well and good, but this is you're helping
- 5:55Speaker 4: individuals here through this talk about that.
- 5:58Speaker 8: Well, funds can go to anything from housing to medication treatment,
- 6:04Speaker 8: even just groceries to help you get through the week,
- 6:06Speaker 8: you know, if you can't get out and about Uh,
- 6:08Speaker 8: most of our agents that will sponsor someone or nominate
- 6:13Speaker 8: them for help, you know, will take the funds, go
- 6:15Speaker 8: buy groceries and deliver them. So it's it's all, you know,
- 6:19Speaker 8: the family aspect to help those that continue to help us.
- 6:23Speaker 4: And I think so often again, you know, cancer is
- 6:25Speaker 4: one of those things that touches everybody's life. I mean,
- 6:27Speaker 4: you know, every family, regardless of income or cancer, can
- 6:31Speaker 4: and care who you are. You're exactly right about that,
- 6:33Speaker 4: and there's so much that goes into it other than
- 6:37Speaker 4: I'm not trying to diminish it other than just the care.
- 6:40Speaker 4: I mean, because and when and let's face it, in
- 6:42Speaker 4: a in a family, if you're a close knit family,
- 6:45Speaker 4: when one person has cancer, everybody has cancer. I know
- 6:49Speaker 4: that's a very that's a very dark way to put it,
- 6:52Speaker 4: because there's appointments that have to be gotten to and
- 6:55Speaker 4: other people have to pick up the slack. If there's
- 6:57Speaker 4: something you know that somebody is not able to be
- 7:00Speaker 4: to contribute as much as they want to to a
- 7:01Speaker 4: family and things of that nature. And well, I just think,
- 7:05Speaker 4: hats off to you guys for doing this. I mean,
- 7:06Speaker 4: it's a great event. And give us a couple of
- 7:11Speaker 4: without mentioning names, of course, give us a couple of
- 7:13Speaker 4: success stories that you have seen with this over the years.
- 7:17Speaker 4: And I know, I know there's been hundreds, but I mean, yeah,
- 7:19Speaker 4: now we.
- 7:20Speaker 7: Two, for example, we have I would say about one
- 7:23Speaker 7: hundred and seventy agents and if you think about their families,
- 7:26Speaker 7: how many people are actually directly affected by this? I
- 7:29Speaker 7: would say every year unfortunately, but also fortunately we've been
- 7:32Speaker 7: able to step in and help them. So I mean
- 7:34Speaker 7: it's a common thing that happens, like I said, yearly.
- 7:37Speaker 6: Yeah, we're lucky enough to have not had to say
- 7:39Speaker 6: no so far.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:40Speaker 6: Yeah, the funds tend to hold out.
- 7:43Speaker 8: You know, We've got a lot of real estate attorneys
- 7:46Speaker 8: around town, lenders, bankers, insurance agents, and they all take
- 7:51Speaker 8: time and money out of their pockets to put into
- 7:54Speaker 8: our coffers to help the people that have been a
- 7:56Speaker 8: client of theirs at some point in time possibly.
- 7:58Speaker 4: And it's one of the great things I love about
- 8:00Speaker 4: all of well West Virginia in general, you know, is
- 8:03Speaker 4: we're such giving people, and when something like this is happening,
- 8:07Speaker 4: I mean usually, yeah, you'll reach out to some people
- 8:10Speaker 4: and say can you help. But a lot of times
- 8:12Speaker 4: it's been my experience in different charitable things that you
- 8:14Speaker 4: will have somebody call you and say, hey, I heard
- 8:17Speaker 4: about this, how can I get an.
- 8:18Speaker 8: Absolutely, we definitely have that, and you're absolutely right, A.
- 8:21Speaker 8: It's it's definitely the Mountain State mentality, you know. I know,
- 8:25Speaker 8: I help a lot of people move here from out
- 8:26Speaker 8: of state, and it's funny when I hear Last year,
- 8:30Speaker 8: I had a guy move from Florida and his buddy
- 8:32Speaker 8: helped him move, like physically helped me move. And he
- 8:34Speaker 8: came up and he said, I'm I'm gonna put my
- 8:36Speaker 8: house in the market at Florida.
- 8:37Speaker 6: I'm moving up here.
- 8:38Speaker 8: He's like, I can walk down the street and people
- 8:39Speaker 8: will actually see hello.
- 8:40Speaker 4: To me, you actually know your neighbors.
- 8:42Speaker 8: Well, I mean, he was just shocked that people would
- 8:44Speaker 8: would look at him and and and nod and say hello,
- 8:46Speaker 8: good morning. So yeah, that's that's definitely the mentality we
- 8:49Speaker 8: like to have to try to help our help people
- 8:52Speaker 8: that are in our circles.
- 8:53Speaker 4: And again you, I mean you're you guys are a
- 8:55Speaker 4: great company, and your hats off to you for doing this,
- 8:57Speaker 4: but you wouldn't be able to pull this thing off
- 8:59Speaker 4: by yourself off. I mean, I got to be able
- 9:01Speaker 4: to have all to talk about some of the you know,
- 9:03Speaker 4: mentioned names specifically, but you mentioned other people in the community,
- 9:06Speaker 4: insurance attorneys and things of that nature, talk about the
- 9:08Speaker 4: help that they've been able to provide.
- 9:09Speaker 8: Well, it's nothing for our affiliates to drop what they're doing.
- 9:12Speaker 8: I know, we'll have a couple that are on the
- 9:13Speaker 8: committee with us that will drop everything they're doing Thursday
- 9:16Speaker 8: and come help us get ready to decorate.
- 9:18Speaker 2: You know.
- 9:18Speaker 8: Yeah, we don't have to pay anybody to do anything.
- 9:20Speaker 8: We've got lots of volunteer.
- 9:21Speaker 7: Help and they'll be starting first thing in the morning
- 9:23Speaker 7: on Thursday to get ready and they'll have to stay
- 9:25Speaker 7: after And.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Yeah, do you still need volunteers for that, because I
- 9:28Speaker 4: mean what happens a lot of times is people and
- 9:30Speaker 4: I spent a lot of time talking about these community
- 9:32Speaker 4: service things like this. People will say, well, I'd really
- 9:34Speaker 4: like to get involved, but I for one reason another
- 9:37Speaker 4: I can't be there that night, or I can't you know,
- 9:39Speaker 4: I'm not in a financial situation to be able to
- 9:42Speaker 4: do that. There's some ways you can help beyond.
- 9:44Speaker 7: Them if anyone's wanting to volunteer. If we can't find
- 9:47Speaker 7: a space for it, thish for this direct event this year.
- 9:50Speaker 7: We will absolutely find room or something to help for
- 9:52Speaker 7: next year because it's a yearly thing and we're not
- 9:55Speaker 7: going to say.
- 9:55Speaker 6: No to help.
- 9:56Speaker 8: Well, and we're active all year long as a company,
- 9:58Speaker 8: so you know, we do a lot of stuff. Yeah,
- 10:01Speaker 8: if people would like to give back and find a
- 10:02Speaker 8: way to do that, we can find a place for him.
- 10:04Speaker 8: We're blessed in this event to have tons and tons
- 10:07Speaker 8: of help, so I think we're good there. But like
- 10:10Speaker 8: Margaret said, we can find a place for your help
- 10:12Speaker 8: if that's.
- 10:13Speaker 4: What you'd like to do, All right, give us the
- 10:16Speaker 4: overall let's go back to the beginning on the time,
- 10:19Speaker 4: the place, how to get tickets, and so on and
- 10:21Speaker 4: so forth.
- 10:21Speaker 7: It will be Little Creek Country Club, Country Club. I
- 10:25Speaker 7: just rear blank thank you Thursday from six to nine.

- 14:54Speaker 13: interested in economic development, whether it's public or private sector.
- 14:58Speaker 13: So we presented to the Development Committee on Joint Committee
- 15:02Speaker 13: for the Legislature last night and basically reminded them of
- 15:06Speaker 13: who West Virginia ADC is, who are membership entails, and
- 15:10Speaker 13: also gave them what our priorities are as economic developers
- 15:15Speaker 13: going into the twenty twenty six legislative session. So it
- 15:19Speaker 13: was a great highlight and we had some great discussion,
- 15:23Speaker 13: and it was really great to have that receipt of
- 15:27Speaker 13: information from our delegates and senators and what's important to
- 15:31Speaker 13: us in economic development and.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Let's talk about what some of those policies that you
- 15:35Speaker 4: want to see and are some of the things that
- 15:37Speaker 4: are important to you get into that.
- 15:40Speaker 13: So we've sent on a survey to our members and
- 15:43Speaker 13: like I mentioned, we have over two hundred organizations are
- 15:46Speaker 13: represented in our membership, and we asked everybody, Okay, what
- 15:51Speaker 13: are your priorities? What do you want to see our
- 15:53Speaker 13: senators and delegates working on in economic development? And the
- 15:58Speaker 13: top two for local economic development funding and site readiness funding.
- 16:05Speaker 13: So the first is basically how the state helped support
- 16:10Speaker 13: local economic development authorities like my day job, Dave at
- 16:14Speaker 13: Putnam County Development Authority. Most people don't realize that economic
- 16:18Speaker 13: development organizations do not have a dedicated funding stream. We're
- 16:22Speaker 13: all made up differently and we all have to find
- 16:24Speaker 13: our own way of funding our organizations. Some of us
- 16:29Speaker 13: are public, some of us are private, but we all
- 16:33Speaker 13: apply for a grant to the state where we're able
- 16:37Speaker 13: to get a matching fund each year. And we've had
- 16:41Speaker 13: that around for about thirty years. It's called the Local
- 16:44Speaker 13: Economic Development Grant. But that was actually the number one
- 16:47Speaker 13: concern of our members, regardless of if they were a
- 16:51Speaker 13: local development authority or if they were a private industry,
- 16:54Speaker 13: or they were state or federal government. And in that
- 16:58Speaker 13: amount for the first time increased quite a bit last
- 17:02Speaker 13: year to forty one thousand dollars, and then it dropped
- 17:06Speaker 13: back down this year and this year's budget to twenty
- 17:08Speaker 13: two thousand dollars. And again I said, that's matching. So
- 17:12Speaker 13: that's a twenty two thousand dollars grant for each county
- 17:16Speaker 13: of West Virginia that they can apply for and they
- 17:18Speaker 13: have to have another twenty two thousand dollars to match it.
- 17:22Speaker 4: Todd again. Morgan Tenning from the put McGinnity Development Authority
- 17:25Speaker 4: and also representing the West Virginia Economic Development Council, who
- 17:28Speaker 4: she gave remarks yesterday to the interim committees there to Capitol.
- 17:32Speaker 4: What does you talked about the survey that you that
- 17:36Speaker 4: you sent out but to somebody, as you said, your
- 17:37Speaker 4: day job, who does economic development for living independent of
- 17:43Speaker 4: this council? Give us an overall on the economic status
- 17:47Speaker 4: of West Virginia. What are you seeing out there? Good things?
- 17:51Speaker 4: Things we need to work on. I mean, I'm talking
- 17:53Speaker 4: about you as an economic development person yourself.
- 17:56Speaker 13: Sure so, I mean in Putnam County we are booming
- 17:59Speaker 13: and jokes that we're going to have to change our
- 18:01Speaker 13: slogan to sold out pretty soon. The system. What's growth
- 18:06Speaker 13: and we're running out of land. But I think what
- 18:09Speaker 13: you're seeing across the board is over the last several years,
- 18:13Speaker 13: we've won some really big economic development investments in West Virginia,
- 18:17Speaker 13: and that's a huge win, regardless of which county want
- 18:21Speaker 13: it or where you live. And what we're seeing from
- 18:24Speaker 13: that nowadays is kind of the snowball effect that happens
- 18:29Speaker 13: after you do win an investment. It's when you realize
- 18:32Speaker 13: that you need more people for the jobs that are here.
- 18:37Speaker 13: You need more homes for those people, you need more
- 18:39Speaker 13: childcare for those people, you need more health care for
- 18:42Speaker 13: those people. You have more children that are going to
- 18:45Speaker 13: end up going into the school system. But I think,
- 18:48Speaker 13: especially here in Putnam County, we're definitely seeing that downstream
- 18:52Speaker 13: effect of winning economic development investments, and now we're having
- 18:57Speaker 13: to kind of build up the foundation to be able
- 19:01Speaker 13: to support having those types of winds in our backyard.
- 19:07Speaker 4: And I think sometimes you're absolutely right about that. I mean,
- 19:10Speaker 4: we all love to hear these big economic development announcements,
- 19:12Speaker 4: no matter whether it's in Putnam County or wherever it's
- 19:15Speaker 4: happening in West Virginia. You love to hear these things.
- 19:17Speaker 4: But then once you get them and I know, you
- 19:20Speaker 4: do a whole lot of work before you ever, you know,
- 19:22Speaker 4: put it out there to try to get it. But
- 19:23Speaker 4: then that's when that's when the real work begins. I mean,
- 19:27Speaker 4: it's all real work, but I mean that's when you
- 19:29Speaker 4: really got to get to it. Because Okay, we got
- 19:31Speaker 4: people coming here. I mean, look at New Core, I
- 19:33Speaker 4: mean just one county over. We had the Invent announcement
- 19:36Speaker 4: last week, which we'll we'll get to that a little
- 19:37Speaker 4: bit later on. These people are coming and sometimes, you know,
- 19:41Speaker 4: we do our best to try to be prepared for it,
- 19:45Speaker 4: but there's influxes of people that are that are coming
- 19:49Speaker 4: in and you've got to.
- 19:49Speaker 13: Be ready for it, absolutely, and we have to have
- 19:53Speaker 13: a trained work force.
- 19:54Speaker 14: You know.
- 19:54Speaker 13: One of the things that we've worked on here at
- 19:56Speaker 13: Kundam County Development Authority is in addistive called home Kown
- 19:59Speaker 13: Advantage was the Panic School system because we realized that
- 20:03Speaker 13: a lot of our young people and their parents think
- 20:06Speaker 13: they have to leave the state for a good paying job,
- 20:08Speaker 13: and that's just not the reality. We have opportunities here,
- 20:12Speaker 13: it's just not the opportunities that people are thinking about.
- 20:15Speaker 13: And you mentioned Invent perfect example, So for those who
- 20:18Speaker 13: don't know. Invent made an expansion announcement last week and
- 20:22Speaker 13: that company is formerly known here locally as Park Line
- 20:27Speaker 13: over an Eleanor Industrial Park. Wonderful home grown company, and
- 20:33Speaker 13: they made an announcement last week that they want an
- 20:35Speaker 13: expansion internally in their Invent company globally and they have
- 20:41Speaker 13: to hire one hundred people in the next six to
- 20:44Speaker 13: ten months. That's an astronomical amount of people to try
- 20:49Speaker 13: to source locally. But maybe people aren't thinking that they
- 20:53Speaker 13: can go into things like that. You know, there are options,
- 20:56Speaker 13: So we are trying to communicate to the school system
- 21:01Speaker 13: into our community that there are jobs available. It just
- 21:04Speaker 13: may not be what you thought you were going to
- 21:06Speaker 13: grow up to be. Let me put it out.
- 21:08Speaker 4: Yeah, well you're right about that. And it's again, the
- 21:11Speaker 4: focus has has changed so much. And I've talked about
- 21:14Speaker 4: this on the show Morgan numerous times. You know, I'm
- 21:18Speaker 4: from the generation you know somebody who graduated high school
- 21:21Speaker 4: in eighteen eighties they said, okay, you know, everybody's going
- 21:24Speaker 4: to go off to college. And look, there's I mean
- 21:26Speaker 4: nothing wrong with setting your sights on WVU Marshall, you
- 21:31Speaker 4: see state whatever it is. But the reality is is
- 21:35Speaker 4: that that's not for everyone, and that there are opportunities
- 21:40Speaker 4: available out there, good paying jobs in other fields. That
- 21:44Speaker 4: means one's bigger, better than the other. It just means
- 21:46Speaker 4: that it's different. And I love the fact. And I
- 21:49Speaker 4: know you've got some stuff going on with Bridge Valley,
- 21:51Speaker 4: which I'm going to get to momentarily, and they're one
- 21:52Speaker 4: of the sponsors of this show, and I have doctor
- 21:54Speaker 4: Casey Saxevillbridge Valley on the show a couple of times
- 21:56Speaker 4: a month to talk about I love that institutions and
- 21:58Speaker 4: not just hers or not Bridge Valley, but there are
- 22:01Speaker 4: institutions like that that are really looking at this sort
- 22:04Speaker 4: of thing now and saying, hey, we're going to need welders,
- 22:07Speaker 4: We're going to need you know, coders, We're going to
- 22:09Speaker 4: need all these things that modern businesses need once we
- 22:12Speaker 4: get these economic development announcements made for our areas.
- 22:17Speaker 13: Absolutely, and I loved that you mentioned Bridge Valley just
- 22:21Speaker 13: now and actually before I came on, because we work
- 22:24Speaker 13: with them quite a bit. I mean, we we actually
- 22:27Speaker 13: did an event last Friday that we co hosted with
- 22:30Speaker 13: Bridge Valley at their Toyota Hall Advanced Technology Center. We
- 22:34Speaker 13: brought in one hundred and fifty students from Kennall and
- 22:36Speaker 13: Putnam Counties and took them through Toyota Hall for all
- 22:40Speaker 13: these different exhibits where they got to learn about PLCs
- 22:43Speaker 13: and pneumatics and robotics, just trying to expose our young
- 22:47Speaker 13: talent to a career in STEM because there's so many
- 22:51Speaker 13: job opportunities. And then we also had employers present who
- 22:55Speaker 13: would love to hire those young people when they graduate
- 22:58Speaker 13: high school. We have Toyota there, we have Service Fire,
- 23:02Speaker 13: we had Montara, and you know, that's also why we
- 23:05Speaker 13: started that apprenticeship program called Same with Toyota, because Toyota
- 23:09Speaker 13: recognized that they had a very alarmingly large amount of
- 23:14Speaker 13: our maintenance team that could retire at any point in time,
- 23:17Speaker 13: and they didn't have much of a generation coming in
- 23:20Speaker 13: behind that. So, as you mentioned, you know, we've kind
- 23:24Speaker 13: of pushed for something different for so many decades that
- 23:28Speaker 13: now we have this shortage in STEM and working with
- 23:32Speaker 13: your hands, and there's so many great opportunities for those
- 23:36Speaker 13: who want to do that. And then, honestly, you know,
- 23:40Speaker 13: we've seen some people who started in production and then
- 23:42Speaker 13: they realized they wanted to upscale, and then they go
- 23:44Speaker 13: to a bridge Valley or another communities. At college they
- 23:47Speaker 13: get their associates degree and then maybe later on they
- 23:50Speaker 13: go to Marshall or WU and they actually complete an
- 23:52Speaker 13: engineering degree. So this is not like a one stop shop.
- 23:55Speaker 13: If you go into a technical trade. There are plenty
- 23:59Speaker 13: of options. A high of you on your post to
- 24:02Speaker 13: a successful career here in West Virginia.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Talking to Morgan Tenny, you gave a Dave Allen showing
- 24:06Speaker 4: five eighty Live is brought to you in part by
- 24:08Speaker 4: Pinnacle Consultants. Pinnacle offers a four phase assessment for your properties. Inspection, sampling,
- 24:12Speaker 4: now analysis, comprehensive reporting, and management planning. Checkout Pinnacle Corp
- 24:16Speaker 4: dot net. Because what you don't know can hurt you.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Now you've got a resident is called a residential contractor
- 24:24Speaker 4: Connect event coming up right? Talk about that?
- 24:28Speaker 13: Yeah, that's fun. We love hosting events. I've just mentioned
- 24:32Speaker 13: several since being on here, but we have an upcoming
- 24:36Speaker 13: event this Friday, Residential Contractor Connect Event. We are hosting
- 24:42Speaker 13: a speed networking event for local residential subcontractors to have
- 24:47Speaker 13: an interest in working with Ward Communities. Ward Communities is
- 24:51Speaker 13: who we announced earlier. This year's day is going to
- 24:55Speaker 13: be building a more than four hundred unit housing development
- 24:58Speaker 13: and Hurricane. They are a large company that is going
- 25:02Speaker 13: to be coming in and building those units, but they
- 25:05Speaker 13: want to work with as many local subcontractors as possible.
- 25:09Speaker 13: They would love to come into our community and be
- 25:11Speaker 13: a part of the community. So we asked them if
- 25:15Speaker 13: we could host an event and they said yes. We
- 25:19Speaker 13: have over one hundred local companies who have signed up
- 25:24Speaker 13: to meet one on one with a Ward Community's representative
- 25:28Speaker 13: this Friday, and we have so many that we've actually
- 25:31Speaker 13: added more Ward Communities members, so we actually do still
- 25:35Speaker 13: have a few slots left. If anybody has interest, they
- 25:37Speaker 13: can call our office three zero four seven five to
- 25:41Speaker 13: seven oh three one eight and sign up.
- 25:44Speaker 4: Still, but where's the event. Where's the event going to
- 25:47Speaker 4: be morgan?
- 25:48Speaker 13: It's going to be a Putnam Career and Technical Center
- 25:50Speaker 13: because we love CCTV over in Eleanor, so this is
- 25:56Speaker 13: going to be an opportunity and we love that we're
- 25:58Speaker 13: getting to be that conduit between local subcontractors and a
- 26:03Speaker 13: company that we've attracted to come to the area. So
- 26:06Speaker 13: we're really hoping that our local subs take advantage of
- 26:09Speaker 13: this opportunity. They're getting FaceTime and they have a shot
- 26:13Speaker 13: at being a part of this really large development coming
- 26:16Speaker 13: to Hurricane.
- 26:17Speaker 4: And this is when this announcement came out of a
- 26:21Speaker 4: few weeks ago about this massive housing development that was
- 26:24Speaker 4: going to be coming to Hurricane and how many what
- 26:26Speaker 4: was the number again approximately how many homes are coming?
- 26:29Speaker 13: More than four hundred units.
- 26:31Speaker 4: More than four hundred units are coming. And one of
- 26:33Speaker 4: the first things that we ask and I appreciate people
- 26:36Speaker 4: asking about this, was how many jobs are is this
- 26:39Speaker 4: going to create for people to build and to help,
- 26:42Speaker 4: you know, contractors of various things with this. And I
- 26:45Speaker 4: love the fact that this company is saying we want
- 26:48Speaker 4: to work with local people, as you said, So to
- 26:51Speaker 4: answer that question, there's going to be a lot of
- 26:54Speaker 4: local people Putnam, Kanawa County, Mason County, Jackson County, all
- 26:58Speaker 4: in this area that are going to be in employed
- 27:00Speaker 4: in building these four hundred and some on homes.
- 27:03Speaker 13: Yes, and I'm so thankful for word communities. They're going
- 27:06Speaker 13: to be exhausted on Friday because they we have packed
- 27:09Speaker 13: their day. We've told we've warned them, you're going to
- 27:12Speaker 13: be exhausted, but we'll make sure you're well fed throughout
- 27:15Speaker 13: the day. But they were really glad that they're willing
- 27:19Speaker 13: to come in and meet with local subs. But you know,
- 27:23Speaker 13: they've expressed they're really excited to be part of a
- 27:25Speaker 13: community that wants to do business with them, that wants
- 27:29Speaker 13: to partner with them. They don't see the development in
- 27:33Speaker 13: Hurricane being their one and only development in not only
- 27:36Speaker 13: Putnam County, but in West Virginia, and they want to
- 27:38Speaker 13: become a part of our community. So I really hope
- 27:41Speaker 13: that our local subcontractors take advantage and embrace that fact
- 27:46Speaker 13: that they have an opportunity here to be a part
- 27:50Speaker 13: of a very large project. Four hundred units is a
- 27:55Speaker 13: whopper day. I don't think any of us really realize
- 27:58Speaker 13: like how how huge that is to West Virginia and
- 28:03Speaker 13: our community. We just don't have that many developments of
- 28:09Speaker 13: any relative size to four hundred for us to compare.
- 28:13Speaker 4: Yeah, you're absolutely right, we have a desperate need for homes.
- 28:16Speaker 4: I mean that folks with I've had Taryll Ellison and
- 28:18Speaker 4: folks from Advantage Valley on the show many many times,
- 28:20Speaker 4: and other folks along that same realm, and they've all
- 28:25Speaker 4: said the same thing, we got to have homes, and
- 28:27Speaker 4: the not only you know, we're talking about Canaw Valley,
- 28:30Speaker 4: we're talking about beyond. We we need homes, We desperately
- 28:33Speaker 4: need homes.
- 28:35Speaker 13: Absolutely, and you know what follows after that, Dave. You know,
- 28:39Speaker 13: my team is a small team of three that includes me,
- 28:42Speaker 13: So we are doing the best that we can to
- 28:45Speaker 13: drive development for Putnam County and West Virginia as a whole.
- 28:49Speaker 13: And some people ask like, you know, why don't you
- 28:51Speaker 13: focus on X Y Z retail. Well, our host, Dave,
- 28:56Speaker 13: is that if we've put our time and our resources
- 28:58Speaker 13: into the manufacturing that will bring the job, then we
- 29:02Speaker 13: can help them with workforce development, and then we can
- 29:04Speaker 13: help them with housing for that workforce. All the other
- 29:07Speaker 13: ancillary businesses are going to naturally follow. They always do
- 29:11Speaker 13: have the healthcare or retail. It's going to bring more restaurants,
- 29:15Speaker 13: it's going to bring more stores. And although we sometimes
- 29:18Speaker 13: have a small part in some of those things, Dave,
- 29:21Speaker 13: it's just not our focus because of our resources. So,
- 29:24Speaker 13: you know, we're a really small team and we know
- 29:27Speaker 13: that if we focus on the upstream, then all of
- 29:30Speaker 13: those other things that people want to see in terms
- 29:32Speaker 13: of retail are going to come naturally.
- 29:35Speaker 4: All right, before we let you go, you did mention
- 29:36Speaker 4: some things going on to Putnam Career and Technical Center.
- 29:39Speaker 4: You get this hometown advantage thing going on. We're going
- 29:42Speaker 4: to be talking more about that over the next couple
- 29:43Speaker 4: of weeks. It's a free career fair and you still
- 29:47Speaker 4: got opportunities for people to sign up for that. Talk
- 29:50Speaker 4: about that before we let you go.
- 29:52Speaker 13: Yes, thank you so much. We are hosting a free
- 29:55Speaker 13: career fair called Hometown Advantage at Putnam Career and Technical

- 30:37Speaker 13: You do not have to leave West Virginia for a

- 30:41Speaker 4: Love it Man again. I got a chance to attend
- 30:43Speaker 4: this last year, and oh a spoiler alert, I'm going

- 34:26Speaker 14: I'm doing great, Dave, thanks for having me.
- 34:28Speaker 4: I appreciate you being here. You're much much more pleasant
- 34:31Speaker 4: than Tom Hunter. I'll say that, much more pleasant.
- 34:34Speaker 14: I'll be sure to tell you.
- 34:35Speaker 4: Oh, he's listening. I'm sure he's all right. So we
- 34:38Speaker 4: hear a lot about scams in West Virginia. And I
- 34:41Speaker 4: know I've had folks from the AARP on, I've had
- 34:43Speaker 4: folks with the Attorney General's Office over the years on
- 34:45Speaker 4: to talk about this. It's a problem, and it's a
- 34:49Speaker 4: problem with these scams that hit all demographics, not just
- 34:52Speaker 4: ones that you consider quote quote aarp But there's a
- 34:56Speaker 4: special target, you know, for folks like that. What are
- 34:58Speaker 4: you seeing out there now as far as scams go.
- 35:01Speaker 14: Oh, Dave, we're seeing so many scams hit hit West
- 35:04Speaker 14: Virginians and particularly older West Virginians. You may have gotten one.
- 35:08Speaker 14: I got one just yesterday on my text. It said, oh,
- 35:11Speaker 14: you were on the turnpike and you didn't pay your debt.
- 35:13Speaker 4: I get a couple of those a week.
- 35:15Speaker 14: They come all the time, and so you know they're
- 35:17Speaker 14: only asking for three dollars, six dollars whatever it is,
- 35:19Speaker 14: and so you think, oh, well, maybe I did run
- 35:21Speaker 14: down Beckley and the easy pasting work. They're trying to
- 35:25Speaker 14: get your bank account inform.
- 35:26Speaker 4: That's what it's not about, the three dollars.
- 35:28Speaker 14: No, once they get your banking information, then they will
- 35:31Speaker 14: drain your bank accounts. That's a common one going around.
- 35:35Speaker 14: There's another one going around about jury duty. They'll say
- 35:39Speaker 14: you missed jury.
- 35:40Speaker 4: That's not a new one. I mean that one's been
- 35:42Speaker 4: around for why. It goes away and kind of comes back.
- 35:45Speaker 14: It circulates, It circulates, and they tell you, well, we're
- 35:48Speaker 14: going to send someone to a rescue, We're going to
- 35:50Speaker 14: send them to your house. And the new twist is
- 35:53Speaker 14: they ask you to pay your fine with a gift card.
- 35:57Speaker 14: And it's because gift cards you really can't trace them
- 35:59Speaker 14: and you're not going to track down the thief. So
- 36:02Speaker 14: we have a saying that gift cards are presents, not payments.
- 36:07Speaker 14: So if anyone, yeah, anyone asked you to pay with
- 36:11Speaker 14: the gift card, something's wrong.
- 36:13Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, you're exactly right. And we just see so
- 36:16Speaker 4: many of these things, and you know, these little things,
- 36:18Speaker 4: these little computers that we carry around in our pocket
- 36:21Speaker 4: have and everybody's connected now has made it even even easier.
- 36:26Speaker 14: Sadly, absolutely most I think over fifty percent now of
- 36:31Speaker 14: the scams that are perpetrated across the country are initiated
- 36:34Speaker 14: via text. And so if you receive a text that
- 36:38Speaker 14: has a link and they want you to click on
- 36:40Speaker 14: it and it's from someone that you don't know, don't
- 36:44Speaker 14: do it.
- 36:44Speaker 4: And you know the thing about it is. You talked
- 36:46Speaker 4: about targeting older folks, and there's a reason for that.
- 36:51Speaker 4: I mean, they've always been primarily the ones that were
- 36:54Speaker 4: on the scam bull's eye, even before the Internet and
- 36:57Speaker 4: things of that nature, because they tend to be a
- 36:59Speaker 4: little bit more trusting and they want to see the
- 37:02Speaker 4: you know, the good in people. That's that's one thing.
- 37:05Speaker 4: But especially now when you add the new technology susan
- 37:08Speaker 4: into it, then they're like, well, maybe this is the
- 37:12Speaker 4: way they do it now. And so I think sometimes,
- 37:14Speaker 4: I mean, you folks with AARP and others, you do
- 37:16Speaker 4: a great job of educating people, but sometimes I think
- 37:19Speaker 4: maybe maybe some people in the family probably need to,
- 37:23Speaker 4: you know, educate them. You know, all right, Mom, are grandma, grandpa?
- 37:27Speaker 4: You know, you got to watch this stuff.
- 37:29Speaker 14: They are a target. Older people are a target because
- 37:32Speaker 14: the scam artists think they maybe aren't technologically savvy like
- 37:36Speaker 14: the younger people, and they have a lifetime of savings.
- 37:40Speaker 14: They generally lose more money than the younger people in
- 37:43Speaker 14: the scams because they have more money. They have their
- 37:46Speaker 14: retirement funds, they have their accounts that they've spent their
- 37:49Speaker 14: whole lives saving, and so while younger people are scammed
- 37:55Speaker 14: more often. Older people lose more money and they aren't
- 37:58Speaker 14: in the workforce to be able to make.
- 37:59Speaker 4: That exactly right. Again, we're talking with Susan le Few,
- 38:02Speaker 4: Associate State director of aarp OK. You got an event
- 38:05Speaker 4: coming to the Marriott at Charleston. Talk about that.
- 38:08Speaker 14: We do next Thursday, October sixteenth. It's called Operation Scam Jam,
- 38:13Speaker 14: and we have a whole series of experts who are
- 38:16Speaker 14: going to share tips and information on all of the
- 38:19Speaker 14: latest scams, all of the trends in the frauds, and
- 38:23Speaker 14: how to protect yourself things you can do, action steps
- 38:26Speaker 14: you can take to protect yourself, your family, finances, and
- 38:30Speaker 14: your assets from these scam artists. You know, these scam
- 38:33Speaker 14: artists are really really good at what they do, if
- 38:36Speaker 14: they would put half the effort into being.
- 38:39Speaker 4: Legitimate and productive citizen exactly. How many of these scams
- 38:43Speaker 4: that we see don't emanate from the United States. A
- 38:45Speaker 4: lot of them, the majority of them, that's what I
- 38:48Speaker 4: would imagine.
- 38:48Speaker 14: A lot of them do. A lot of them are
- 38:50Speaker 14: from overseas. And what technology nowadays, the scam artists can
- 38:53Speaker 14: be anywhere, yeah, anywhere in the world.
- 38:55Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, I mean, and the ability you mentioned
- 38:58Speaker 4: the text the ability to show up with a three
- 39:00Speaker 4: oh four area number when you're somewhere, you know, across
- 39:03Speaker 4: the globe somewhere. I mean it shows up literally. I've
- 39:06Speaker 4: gotten text that will say, you know, with a three
- 39:09Speaker 4: oh four number, and even have the city on it.
- 39:10Speaker 4: It'll say Charleston, West Virginia or whatever your hometown you
- 39:13Speaker 4: know may be. They're nowhere near Charleston, West Virginia. There's
- 39:17Speaker 4: somewhere else. So I mean, I was looking at your
- 39:19Speaker 4: list of presenters that you've got. Of course, Gayleen the
- 39:22Speaker 4: state director is going to be their friend of the program,
- 39:24Speaker 4: Jane Marx and others. You've got folks from local from
- 39:28Speaker 4: banking organizations. I mean, you've get some pretty heavy hitters here.
- 39:34Speaker 14: We do. We have actually the regional vice president of AARP,
- 39:39Speaker 14: she's coming in from Texas t Tran. We have a
- 39:43Speaker 14: local banking panel of local bankers who can tell tell
- 39:46Speaker 14: you how to protect your bank account. We have a
- 39:49Speaker 14: representative of the Bureau of Senior Services who's going to
- 39:52Speaker 14: talk about Medicare scams. Right now, we're getting ready to
- 39:56Speaker 14: hit that open enrollment period for Medicare, and there are
- 40:00Speaker 14: there's so many health related Medicare related scams going on
- 40:03Speaker 14: right now. You have to be really, really careful, and
- 40:07Speaker 14: so she's going to talk about that, and then we
- 40:10Speaker 14: have a fraud expert from our fraud Watch network who's
- 40:14Speaker 14: coming over from our neighboring state of Kentucky, and so
- 40:18Speaker 14: Gary Aatkins will be coming over for that. And in addition,
- 40:22Speaker 14: we're going to have information tables that people can visit
- 40:25Speaker 14: from the Secretary of State, the Attorney General's Office, the
- 40:29Speaker 14: Treasurer's Office, AARP's Tax Aid, tax Preparation Program, the Bureau
- 40:35Speaker 14: of Senior Services. So there will be so many resources
- 40:38Speaker 14: available for people, all right, and.
- 40:40Speaker 4: Again it's all happening on Thursday, the sixteenth of October
- 40:43Speaker 4: the Marriott Downtown Charleston. Explain to people how they can
- 40:47Speaker 4: sign up and who's this open to and just give
- 40:49Speaker 4: us all that information.
- 40:50Speaker 14: It's open to the public, it's free. Lunch will be
- 40:53Speaker 14: provided catered by the Marriott, so I'm sure it'll be
- 40:57Speaker 14: the easiest way to sign up is to go our
- 40:59Speaker 14: Facebook page. We have a link on our Facebook page,
- 41:02Speaker 14: so if you just are on Facebook, look for AARP
- 41:05Speaker 14: West Virginia, or you can go to AARP dot org
- 41:09Speaker 14: slash WV and just click on events at the bottom
- 41:13Speaker 14: of the page, or we have a telephone number you
- 41:15Speaker 14: can call. It's one eight six six two two seven
- 41:21Speaker 14: seven four five eight. And while it is open to
- 41:24Speaker 14: the public and it's free, space.
- 41:26Speaker 4: Is limited, right yeah, yeah, sure, And you want to
- 41:28Speaker 4: you know, for headcount purposes and things of that nature,
- 41:30Speaker 4: you probably need to let them know your covele What
- 41:32Speaker 4: about for the people that will be setting up. You
- 41:35Speaker 4: mentioned some of the governmental agencies and so on and
- 41:37Speaker 4: so forth. Do you have space available if somebody would
- 41:40Speaker 4: like to come and set up? Are you pretty much
- 41:41Speaker 4: limited AT's point?
- 41:42Speaker 14: We're pretty much limited at this point. But if they
- 41:44Speaker 14: really want.
- 41:44Speaker 4: To give me, you'll make it work.
- 41:46Speaker 14: Give us a call, we'll see what we can do.
- 41:47Speaker 4: Is what you do? You just say, Tom Hunter, move
- 41:49Speaker 4: that table, get off your we are in and go move

- 48:04Speaker 4: about Selango Law Light to Night and the funny thing
- 48:06Speaker 4: and Jay's Jay and I've been friends for a number
- 48:07Speaker 4: of years. Jay was saying to everybody that would come by,
- 48:11Speaker 4: you know, people would make these comments like it's good
- 48:13Speaker 4: to see or whatever. Jay would I say, Hey, would
- 48:14Speaker 4: you like to come and hang lights? Because it is
- 48:18Speaker 4: a massive undertaking with the Selango Law Light to Night.
- 48:21Speaker 4: And I was talking to Andy Shay on the air
- 48:25Speaker 4: a couple of I guess about a month or so ago.
- 48:27Speaker 4: He came in the studio when we started making the
- 48:29Speaker 4: announcements about Light to Night and he said, oh, you
- 48:31Speaker 4: thought last year was big WEDLL this year we're putting
- 48:36Speaker 4: more lights out. So great event and again it's going

- 49:14Speaker 4: items here well. One in particular, Daniel Woods spent yesterday
- 49:19Speaker 4: in the court room of Judge Mary Claire Akers here
- 49:22Speaker 4: in Charleston, focusing on the shooting near the Shawnee Sports Complex. Now,
- 49:27Speaker 4: this story was posted of course by Daniel very very
- 49:30Speaker 4: in depth reporting on day one in Judge Jakers's court
- 49:35Speaker 4: room yesterday. You can read that for yourself at wv
- 49:37Speaker 4: metronews dot com. Suits of pictures on there as well.
- 49:40Speaker 4: Caden Brown was in court yesterday charged with wanton endangerment
- 49:45Speaker 4: and involving a firearm after he was allegedly part of
- 49:48Speaker 4: a drive by that happened on Smooth Avenue and Dunbar
- 49:51Speaker 4: on that day in twenty twenty four. And again Daniel
- 49:53Speaker 4: has a full story with full details, pictures and whatnot,
- 49:56Speaker 4: posted at wv Metronews dot com and I will say
- 49:59Speaker 4: that about that day. I remember, I remember it well.
- 50:02Speaker 4: I wasn't there. It was a Sunday afternoon and I
- 50:06Speaker 4: was at home, you know, watching some sporting events. I uh,
- 50:09Speaker 4: and I have to do on Sundays if I'm not working,
- 50:12Speaker 4: which I am most Sundays.
- 50:14Speaker 14: Uh.
- 50:14Speaker 4: But I just remember when the news started started hitting
- 50:19Speaker 4: social media about that. And keep in mind, this happened
- 50:23Speaker 4: a couple of blocks away from the Shawnee Sports Complex.
- 50:26Speaker 4: It did not happen on the Shawnee Sports Complex. Okay,
- 50:28Speaker 4: a couple of blocks away. Now, it did create a
- 50:30Speaker 4: lot of issues for the Shawnee Sports Complex because of
- 50:33Speaker 4: the people that were there, and you know, you used
- 50:35Speaker 4: to hear gunshots and you it's kind of hard to tell,
- 50:39Speaker 4: is this just you know, a few feet away from me.
- 50:41Speaker 4: There are a couple of blocks away from me.
- 50:43Speaker 20: Uh.
- 50:44Speaker 4: And that's the just what the whole court case is about.
- 50:47Speaker 4: But it did not happen at the Shawnee Sports Complex.
- 50:50Speaker 4: But old brother, if you were following social media that day,
- 50:54Speaker 4: you would have thinked, you would have thought that it did.
- 50:57Speaker 4: And I have often said that, and this has really
- 51:01Speaker 4: nothing to do with the case. And I'm sure justice
- 51:03Speaker 4: will prevail one way or the other. But I have
- 51:05Speaker 4: often said this with our issue with social media, there
- 51:09Speaker 4: is so much misinformation out there, and this day was
- 51:13Speaker 4: a good example. By the time that I first saw
- 51:16Speaker 4: it hit, you know, and I just you know, it
- 51:19Speaker 4: said shooting near, never said near. It never said at
- 51:24Speaker 4: the Shawnee Sports Complex near by the time it was
- 51:28Speaker 4: all said and done, and you know, you give it
- 51:30Speaker 4: thirty minutes, I was at the complex and I saw
- 51:33Speaker 4: the shooting on the Pitcher's mound or something like that,
- 51:36Speaker 4: and you're just like, that's that's that's not what happened
- 51:41Speaker 4: at all. But anyway, and when those things happen, leave
- 51:46Speaker 4: the reporting up to the professionals. Okay, I'm not a
- 51:49Speaker 4: professional reporter. I'm not a newsgap, but I don't know
- 51:52Speaker 4: what I am. But leave the reporting to the professionals.
- 51:55Speaker 4: That's all I'm saying. The court case continues and Daniel
- 51:58Speaker 4: Woods is in the court room.
- 51:59Speaker 19: TJ.
- 52:00Speaker 4: Meadows getting ready for vacation, aren't you, my friend? Yeah,
- 52:03Speaker 4: could take some time off already. I mean, you don't
- 52:06Speaker 4: need an excuse to wear the vacation shirt, but you
