- Canada survives and advances! This is The Sports Reset for Monday, June 29. In World Cup soccer, Canada beat South Africa 1 to 0 at SoFi Stadium in the Round of 32. One goal, one result, and Canada moves on while South Africa’s run ends. In F1, George Russell won the Austrian Grand Prix, with Max Verstappen second and Kimi Antonelli third. In LPGA golf, Haeran Ryu closed out the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at 13 under, two shots clear of Ina Yoon, with Dewi Weber third at 10 under. In men’s tennis, Zizou Bergs took the Eastbourne title by coming back on Ugo Humbert, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. In MLB, the Boston Red Sox edged the New York Yankees 5 to 4 at Fenway Park, while the Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets 5 to 4 at Citi Field. In the WNBA, the Golden State Valkyries beat the New York Liberty 76 to 67 at Chase Center. Looking ahead, World Cup soccer has three Round of 32 games today, and the matchup to watch is Japan against Brazil at NRG Stadium, with Paraguay against Germany at Gillette Stadium and Morocco against Netherlands at Estadio BBVA also carrying win-or-go-home stakes. In MLB, the day has several strong reset spots: the Detroit Tigers visit the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, the New York Mets try to answer on the road against the Toronto Blue Jays, and the San Diego Padres go to Wrigley Field for a series opener with the Chicago Cubs. The LA Dodgers also visit the Athletics at Sutter Health Park, while the San Francisco Giants go to the Arizona Diamondbacks in another National League matchup with week-start momentum attached. In golf, the Travelers Championship picture is tight, with Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland both at 21 under and Collin Morikawa just one shot back, so every early birdie today changes the pressure at the top.
