Latest / The Gill Athletics Track and Field Connections Podcast / BONUS: The Podcast About Podcasts – Featuring IATC Exchange Zone
Transcript
- 0:00It's bonus time. Here we go.
- 0:02This month in February of 2025, we are doing a podcast about
- 0:06podcast. We want to introduce you to
- 0:08other track and field themed podcasts that are out there that
- 0:11might be great for your listening pleasure.
- 0:14So all month we're introducing a new podcast each and every day,
- 0:17showing you who they are, what they are, how they are, why they
- 0:20got started and even their favorite episodes and most
- 0:23popular. And hopefully this adds to your
- 0:26podcast listening library. So here we go.
- 0:28Let's get started with today's podcast about podcast.
- 0:32All right, here we go. Let's hop right into it.
- 0:34Why don't you start with introducing yourself kind of
- 0:36what your connection to this great sport is?
- 0:38And of course, what's the name of the podcast that we're
- 0:40talking about today? Well, thanks Mike for having me
- 0:43on. It really is an honor to be on
- 0:46on your podcast and and appreciate all the work you've
- 0:49done spreading the word of track and field across the country.
- 0:53But my name is Ben Dewey and I am a high school teacher, first
- 0:59in Iowa in in Waukee Northwest High School, which is a suburb
- 1:03outside of Des Moines. I'm also the girls track and
- 1:07field coach there, heavily involved in the IATC for the
- 1:11last six years. And I'm now the president of the
- 1:14IATC, which is the Iowa Association of Track Coaches.
- 1:18And you know, that's, that's kind of how I got started with
- 1:22this a while ago. But you know, the, the focus of
- 1:26our podcast and it's called the exchange zone, the IATC exchange
- 1:30zone. And we're in year 6.
- 1:32And the focus of our podcast, I guess to best summarize what we
- 1:37hope to, to get across is to, is to promote the sport of track
- 1:42cross country in the state of Iowa.
- 1:45And, you know, cross country is a sport I think we all know as
- 1:49as tracking cross country coaches, it doesn't get a lot of
- 1:52attention. It doesn't get the attention it
- 1:54deserves. And you know, six years ago,
- 1:58that was that was the reason that we started.
- 2:01And that's our focus every episode, is to continue to
- 2:04promote the student athletes and the coaches here in our state.
- 2:08This might be an obvious question, but what's the
- 2:10significance of the name that I kind of think there's a double
- 2:13entendre there that I'm trying to get out here possibly?
- 2:16Man, I'm embarrassed to answer this question because someone
- 2:18just brought that up the other day.
- 2:20We had the big championship productions clinic up at Iowa
- 2:23State, 600 people, coaches from across the Iowa, the Midwest
- 2:29that came and, and one coach says, you know, you called your
- 2:33your podcast, it's a great podcast, by the way, but it's
- 2:35called the Exchange zone and you don't cover track and field.
- 2:39And I'm like, yeah, you know what, that's a good point, but I
- 2:43don't know what, you know, exchange zone.
- 2:46I, I got to give credit to, to the, to the guy who helped me
- 2:49start this. And that's Tim O'Neill, you
- 2:52know, legendary track and field coach here in Iowa at
- 2:55Assumption, Davenport. He, he, he's one of the best all
- 3:00time coaches. And, and when he was president
- 3:02of the IATC, him and I were the ones that collaborated on, on
- 3:06getting this started and, and he came up with the, with the
- 3:09exchange zone. And we've we've gone with it
- 3:12even though, even though it's just during the fall and there
- 3:15is no exchanges in cross country.
- 3:17All right, I love it. I love Tim O'Neal too, by the
- 3:19way, great good friend up here. Tell describe the style.
- 3:23Is this a a solo podcast or your interview style?
- 3:25What's kind of the style of the of the podcast?
- 3:29Well, you know, it's, it's adapted over the years, you
- 3:32know, you know, we felt like when we started six years ago,
- 3:35you know, podcasts were popular, but they were just kind of, you
- 3:39know, becoming a part of, of every person's day or, or people
- 3:43were just starting to really pick up on podcasts.
- 3:46And now we're consumed by podcasts.
- 3:48I mean, they're, they're more popular than listening to the
- 3:51radio and, and radio shows and maybe even watching TV shows.
- 3:55So we've adapted with the times. You know, we started with just
- 4:00me and Tim the first year and then I kind of did it solo year
- 4:052. And then I've I've brought on
- 4:07Kyle Wagner, who is just a phenomenal Co host, very
- 4:12knowledgeable at at cross country.
- 4:15He ran at Loris, coached at for Martin Smith at Iowa State for a
- 4:20couple years. Really, really bright young man
- 4:24and he actually coached with me for a year when I was the head
- 4:26coach at Ames Ames high. So for the last four years he's
- 4:31been, he's been the Co host and, and we were a two man show.
- 4:34And then this year we've gone to the, the interactive YouTube
- 4:38live live video. And so we've had to hire a, a
- 4:42company, a, a production company to, to run that for us.
- 4:45And, and that was really a a big hit this year for for our
- 4:49viewers. Very cool.
- 4:50And what's the average length? I know there can be, you know,
- 4:52Min Max's on there, but what's the average length of a show?
- 4:55Yeah. I mean, we, we try to, as you
- 4:58know, it's hard. It's hard to set a goal time
- 5:00probably. And then like, Yep, I'm, I'm a
- 5:02cold hard stop at an hour, but we try to be done at an hour to
- 5:05an hour and 10 minutes. But as you are probably well
- 5:10aware, it's hard to do that when you've got so many great coaches
- 5:13and and great guests on the show and athletes.
- 5:15And so that's our goal, about about 60 to 70 minutes.
- 5:20You alluded to this a little bit, but what was the
- 5:22motivation? What was the original idea of
- 5:24why to start the exchange zone? Well, the IATC is, is, is the
- 5:30group that's behind it. So they're the ones that
- 5:34financially have supported this. And, you know, people might not
- 5:37know, but starting a podcast, it can be cheap, it can be mildly
- 5:42expensive and it can be expensive depending on what you
- 5:45do. And they've, they've financially
- 5:48backed us from the from the very beginning.
- 5:51So with that being said, being at the IETC exchange zone
- 5:54podcast, it's track coaches organization.
- 5:57So the first motivation was to highlight the terrific athletes
- 6:02and coaches in our state and bring, you know, bring them
- 6:07recognition, bring them popularity.
- 6:10So that's always been that's been our biggest motivation.
- 6:14That's that, that's where we started as far as the as kind of
- 6:19our blueprint. We kind of started out the first
- 6:21couple years is and Tim has, you know, a ton of connections
- 6:25across the country. So we we really did a lot of
- 6:29interviews the first two years with, with high school coaches,
- 6:34college coaches. And then the last three years
- 6:38it's actually been more just cross country coverage in the
- 6:42state of Iowa. And I know this is a, you know,
- 6:45you're doing this for others to, to hopefully listen to our our
- 6:49podcast. But now it's strictly just, we
- 6:52are the one stop shop. No one else does like it.
- 6:55And, and every week on Sunday nights, we just cover what
- 6:58happened the week before and we bring on tremendous coaches and
- 7:03athletes that come on to talk on the podcast to kind of go with
- 7:08that. So we're basically just covering
- 7:09the sport now. I love that.
- 7:11That's really cool. You know, in business, you know,
- 7:14good businesses will create an ideal customer profile.
- 7:17So like here at Gill, you know, moms and dads might they do buy
- 7:20some stuff from us, Construction companies buy stuff from us.
- 7:24But our ideal customer, we are when we think about designing
- 7:27products, marketing the catalog, things like that, the high
- 7:30school and college track coach, that is our main focus.
- 7:33Other people might also partake in our equipment, but we are
- 7:36focused on those coaches. The same thing for podcast is an
- 7:39ideal listener profile. Who is your idea?
- 7:42Like when you're talking, when you're putting together your
- 7:44ideas, who are you really aiming to listen to the show?
- 7:48Great question. SO, you know, and we've, we've
- 7:51thought very, very hard on this the last couple years and, and,
- 7:55and Kyle's been instrumental in helping with this.
- 7:58The 1st is, is, is the coaches and athletes.
- 8:01I mean, I think I, I might be stretching on a limb here, but I
- 8:06think, you know, a lot of coaches and athletes in our
- 8:10state tune into the podcast because they, they love the
- 8:15attention, you know, and, and, and we want to bring attention
- 8:18to as many people as we can and many programs in, in high school
- 8:23as we can. In our state, there's 300 and
- 8:25some teams schools over four classes.
- 8:29So I think, you know, kind of like when we started this six
- 8:33years ago, we wanted to do this with the IATC to highlight the
- 8:37coaches and athletes and their programs.
- 8:39Well, that's our profile. We, I think coaches think it's
- 8:42fun on Sunday nights to tune in and into, to hear us talk about
- 8:46their team and their kids. So those would be the two main
- 8:52ones. But then obviously it's just
- 8:54the, the parents, the spectators, the fans, the
- 8:57grandparents, That's our, that's our big, you know, obviously
- 9:02there's not a, there's more spectators and fans and there
- 9:06are coaches and athletes. And I think, you know, we try to
- 9:08tie all that in to the best we can, but the the foundation is
- 9:13the coaches and the athletes and, and recognizing them and
- 9:16making it fun for them every Sunday night to get excited
- 9:21about the sport. I think the future of content is
- 9:25niche. And so I love, you know, we
- 9:27already in our niche of track and field and now you're niching
- 9:29down to cross country as part of track and field and you're
- 9:31niching down to Iowa as far as cross country.
- 9:34I just think there's so much value in that over there is
- 9:37certainly a value for a national track and field, the podcast
- 9:41show, etcetera, things like that.
- 9:42But what you're doing there is a niche.
- 9:44I just love it and think it's more valuable to more people,
- 9:48specific people that are looking for that.
- 9:51You know, you have been behind the mic, behind the scenes for
- 9:54all the episodes. What has been your favorite
- 9:57episode? And, and maybe another way of
- 9:58asking it is what maybe been the most popular you can.
- 10:00Those aren't necessarily the same episode.
- 10:04Yeah, so I'll answer in two different parts.
- 10:07My favorite episodes that that that I've done, You know, I it's
- 10:12different now because we kind of have changed shifted our focus.
- 10:15But in my in my basement office at Ames High School is old
- 10:19building no windows. The very first episode was Bill
- 10:23Bergen. And you know, one of the the
- 10:27sport's greatest coaches of all time, you know, unfortunately
- 10:31just just passed away a year ago.
- 10:33The founder of the IATC he founded in his basement in 1967
- 10:40and so that that I'll never forget that we we have pictures
- 10:43of it and I worked for Bill actually for two years at
- 10:46championship productions. So I know him very well or knew
- 10:48him very well. But that was just a really
- 10:51special first episode for us. And then I you know, we've had
- 10:56so many good coaches. You know, Chris Bucknam at
- 10:58Arkansas has been on. He obviously has deep ties to
- 11:02Iowa, being in Northern Iowa Panther and you know, my dad ran
- 11:06for him at you and I so I I I've known him for a long time.
- 11:11So that that's always, you know, fun to have him on.
- 11:13He came on years ago, but that was that was another favorite
- 11:17episode. So those are the ones that stick
- 11:20out from from a people standpoint.
- 11:22But my favorite episodes are, are, are the ones where we're
- 11:26we're getting ready for the state qualifying meet, you know,
- 11:29and, and we're, we're going around the state and
- 11:31highlighting every region site. You know, there's five regions
- 11:35and there's eight teams in the region or 10 teams in the
- 11:38region. And those are our most viewed
- 11:41episodes right there. I mean, we the, the night before
- 11:45those meets come out or the night before those meets start,
- 11:48those are our our heaviest traffic episodes.
- 11:51Yeah. Very cool.
- 11:52You know, hosting a podcast is different than being on a
- 11:55podcast or coaching. There's a lot of behind the
- 11:57scenes thing that people don't necessarily know what goes on,
- 12:00you know, as being involved and being as evolved, you know, from
- 12:03a two person to a single to an interview style.
- 12:06You've seen a lot of evolution of what you've done there at the
- 12:08IATC Exchange Zone podcast. What have you learned?
- 12:10What's something when you look back and like, man, I this
- 12:13really taught me how to XY or Z? Well, Mike, I have no background
- 12:19in media or any type of of journalism.
- 12:23I don't know if journalism is the right thing.
- 12:26Podcasting, Mike, anything dealing with the microphone, I
- 12:29have no background. So what I learned is it wasn't
- 12:34as hard as I thought it would be.
- 12:35I remember the first episode, I was so nervous six years ago.
- 12:42I was, I mean, way more nervous than sitting in Drake Stadium in
- 12:45the finals of the Drake Relays, just shaking like, Oh my gosh, I
- 12:50can't believe I'm doing this. And then five years later, we
- 12:53started the video this year and that first episode on on Sunday
- 12:58night in August, it was back. Like I was at the start again.
- 13:01I was just shaking so nervously. But what I've learned is it's
- 13:05not as hard as as, as I thought it would be.
- 13:07And that, and you could probably agree with that.
- 13:09Like once you just go and get in the rhythm and it's, it just
- 13:12seems natural. But but I guess to answer the
- 13:15question even in more depth is just the layers of listeners
- 13:20that we have and my appreciation for their perspective, because
- 13:26everybody has a different perspective, you know, and I
- 13:29can't, we're interactive with our audience.
- 13:32I want people to e-mail us, comment in the YouTube chat and,
- 13:37and we have so many different types of people that listen with
- 13:40different viewpoints. And as a host, you always maybe
- 13:44you're just, you know, tuning into one viewpoint, like it's my
- 13:47viewpoint or Kyle's viewpoint, but just hearing from so many
- 13:51different people from small town Iowa to big school Iowa to, you
- 13:56know, my team only has four kids and we don't even have a full
- 13:59team. Just blending all of those
- 14:02different perspectives has, has been the biggest thing that I've
- 14:06learned since hosting this podcast.
- 14:08And, and not just to think, you know, Ben Dewey knows it all.
- 14:11It's actually all of us know it all.
- 14:14And and we try to incorporate that with our our listeners.
- 14:17That's very cool. I love that.
- 14:18All right, last two questions. Where can listeners find you?
- 14:20Are you exclusive on one of the podcast apps?
- 14:22Do you have a YouTube? We talked a little bit, so bring
- 14:24that up. Where can we we find the show?
- 14:27Yeah, so we're on it on all of them.
- 14:29Apple, Spotify, you know, the big one for us this year has
- 14:32been YouTube. And that's, that's been a huge
- 14:36boost in our viewership. You know, it was all about
- 14:39downloads and now, now it's about views.
- 14:41And we live, we live tweet video as well.
- 14:45So through through X, we're live when we go on the air on Sunday
- 14:49nights at 8:00 in the fall. But those are the main ones you
- 14:53can find us at. That's cool.
- 14:55I love it. Well, podcast listeners love to
- 14:56listen to podcast. I'm assuming this could be a bad
- 14:59assumption that you're a podcast listener.
- 15:01What's your favorite podcast that you listen to that's not
- 15:04track related? Not track related.
- 15:09You know, I've really kind of grown to like the Ed Mylet show.
- 15:13It's, it's, it's a motivational, he's a motivational speaker.
- 15:19He's got great guests on. Actually came across it when he
- 15:22had Danny Hurley on from UConn before was right after their
- 15:27first national championship. And I listen to it and I've I've
- 15:30just continue to listen to it. A lot of just positive
- 15:34motivational stuff that I use for my track and field team.
- 15:38So I've really enjoyed that. It's it's a very popular
- 15:40podcast. And then, you know, I had to
- 15:43shout out your guys's podcast as well.
- 15:45I've listened to numerous interviews the the young lady
- 15:50you had on last week, the national coach of the year was a
- 15:53tremendous interview and, and I learned stuff from all those,
- 15:56those coaches. And I told you before we came
- 15:58on, you know, Kenny Wheeler, his interview last year from
- 16:01Pleasant Valley and, and you know, just listening to people
- 16:06you go against and, and that was really cool.
- 16:08And and then big names you have on obviously are also fun to
- 16:12listen to. So I know that's a track and
- 16:14field podcast, but I, I did have to give you give you a shout out
- 16:18there. You're allowed to break the
- 16:19rule. If that's your answer, that's
- 16:20OK. But yeah, we'll, we'll allow
- 16:22that one. Ben, thank you so much.
- 16:24Hey, so if you're listening right now, here's my challenge
- 16:27to you. We're done with this episode,
- 16:29right? So you can hit pause, use the
- 16:30same app that you're using right now and just search the IATC
- 16:34exchange zone. That'll bring it up.
- 16:35My recommendation, the way I kind of like to try new podcast
- 16:38is listen to their latest episode that kind of gives you
- 16:40their up to date flavor and style.
- 16:42And then some of those most popular and favorite episodes
- 16:45that you like, go back in that library and look at some of
- 16:48those other ones. You might like that as well.
- 16:50And then of course, go to YouTube and check out, you know,
- 16:52just search IATC, the exchange zone.
- 16:54I'd love, you know, we do a live show at the USTFCCCA every year.
- 16:57So I know what goes into that. I think you should probably
- 17:00check that out. That sounds like a cool idea as
- 17:02well, but that's my challenge. Go check it out.
- 17:04Same output right here. IATC exchange zone.
- 17:06And hopefully this is a podcast that will you can add to your
- 17:09repertoire and enjoy more track and field and cross country.
- 17:13Ben, thank you so much. Appreciate you very much for
- 17:15sharing your podcast with us today.
- 17:16Yeah. Thanks, Mike, for having me on
- 17:18and best of luck to your podcast going forward.
- 17:20And Gil? Thank you, brother.
- 17:22Appreciate that.
