- 0:17Speaker 1: right now with Steve Berube, and we're going to talk
- 0:19Speaker 1: about something that's really important. We're talking about truck drivers,
- 0:23Speaker 1: because without truck drivers, we would all be naked and
- 0:25Speaker 1: hungry without that food being delivered to us, without our
- 0:28Speaker 1: clothing being delivered to us. So, Steve, thank you very
- 0:31Speaker 1: much for taking some time to chat. We're going to
- 0:32Speaker 1: talk about National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, which is coming
- 0:36Speaker 1: up right now. And this is something that a lot
- 0:38Speaker 1: of people kind of take for granted, but it's a
- 0:40Speaker 1: really important thing. Those people driving the big 18 wheelers
- 0:43Speaker 1: out there, they bring everything to us, don't they?
- 0:46Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for having me. You're exactly right. They really do.
- 0:51Speaker 2: And I'll kind of walk us through some stats on
- 0:54Speaker 2: that here. We're rolling into National Truck Driver Appreciation Week,
- 0:59Speaker 2: the week of September 13th through the 19th. And this
- 1:03Speaker 2: is a great time for... everyone to take a moment
- 1:06Speaker 2: and say thank you to three and a half million
- 1:08Speaker 2: professional truck drivers on America's roadways. So if you see
- 1:12Speaker 2: somebody at a gas station or getting some food somewhere, great,
- 1:17Speaker 2: great time to just say, thanks. Um, you know, because
- 1:20Speaker 2: as you noted, they, they do deliver all of our
- 1:23Speaker 2: food and clothing. And, you know, if you think about
- 1:26Speaker 2: it in your day, in your daily life, pretty much
- 1:28Speaker 2: everything that you use, whether it's your coffee or your
- 1:31Speaker 2: cell phone, all the food in your fridge, um, One
- 1:33Speaker 2: of those truck drivers drove it probably during the middle
- 1:36Speaker 2: of the night while we were sleeping. The American trucking
- 1:42Speaker 2: apparatus really touches about 1 in 20 jobs around the country.
- 1:47Speaker 2: And there's $ 900 billion a year in revenue generated. The
- 1:52Speaker 2: trucks on America's roadways cover 330 billion miles a year.
- 1:59Speaker 2: That's the equivalent of driving to the sun and back
- 2:01Speaker 2: to Earth 1,700 times.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Wow.
- 2:06Speaker 2: So when you think about the industries that touch our lives,
- 2:10Speaker 2: very few do it in a way that trucking does. And,
- 2:12Speaker 2: you know, it's about more than moving freight. It's about
- 2:15Speaker 2: keeping our community stocked, our businesses running, and the American
- 2:19Speaker 2: economy moving forward. So never a better time. It's great
- 2:22Speaker 2: to say thanks to any truck driver you've ever seen,
- 2:24Speaker 2: but certainly be mindful of it the week of the
- 2:27Speaker 2: 13th to the 19th. And, you know, because these folks really,
- 2:31Speaker 2: really keep America running and make our lives nice.
- 2:35Speaker 1: And the thing is, there are truck drivers all around
- 2:37Speaker 1: the world. You know, there's every country has truck drivers
- 2:40Speaker 1: that are taking things from one place to another. But
- 2:42Speaker 1: when you think about the size of let's just say England,
- 2:45Speaker 1: you know, England is a tiny little country compared to
- 2:47Speaker 1: the United States. So a truck driver there most likely
- 2:50Speaker 1: will be able to probably sleep in their own bed
- 2:52Speaker 1: at night. But if you get in the in a
- 2:54Speaker 1: truck here. and you drive for a day, you could
- 2:58Speaker 1: be weeks and weeks and weeks away from being back
- 3:01Speaker 1: home in your bed. So when you think about that,
- 3:03Speaker 1: that is kind of a unique position for somebody in
- 3:06Speaker 1: this particular occupation to be in this country, isn't it?
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure it is. There are a wide variety
- 3:13Speaker 2: of trucking jobs, and there are quite a few that
- 3:17Speaker 2: require great sacrifice to be away from home for extended
- 3:21Speaker 2: periods of time. To make sure that the goods and
- 3:25Speaker 2: freight that we all rely on in our everyday lives
- 3:29Speaker 2: get back and forth across the country.
- 3:32Speaker 1: And this is also an industry where they're kind of
- 3:34Speaker 1: always looking for people to become truck drivers. And I
- 3:37Speaker 1: have several very good friends that are truck drivers who
- 3:40Speaker 1: are on the road all the time. And they love
- 3:42Speaker 1: it because they get a chance to get out, see
- 3:44Speaker 1: the open road, see parts of the country and get
- 3:46Speaker 1: paid to see parts of the country that they might
- 3:48Speaker 1: never have ever gone to any other reason. And I
- 3:51Speaker 1: think that is something that so many times that maybe
- 3:54Speaker 1: there's not enough emphasis on how great of a job
- 3:57Speaker 1: this can be for the right person, because this could
- 3:59Speaker 1: be the perfect fit for somebody, right?
- 4:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's exactly right. You know, I mean,
- 4:03Speaker 2: I think sometimes when I just go on like a
- 4:05Speaker 2: personal road trip, sometimes it's nice to go off the
- 4:07Speaker 2: beaten path and see an area of your state or
- 4:10Speaker 2: part of the country that you might not otherwise see.
- 4:13Speaker 2: And that's certainly an aspect of a long-haul trucking driver's
- 4:17Speaker 2: job where, you know, they get an opportunity to potentially
- 4:21Speaker 2: go anywhere and see virtually every inch of the country
- 4:25Speaker 2: if they drive enough. So it's definitely, I think, one
- 4:28Speaker 2: of the positive aspects of the job for sure.
- 4:31Speaker 1: And there are some people right now that are in
- 4:33Speaker 1: school that are going to school for a career that
- 4:36Speaker 1: by the time they graduate, AI might have wiped that
- 4:39Speaker 1: entire career field out. We've seen that over the last
- 4:42Speaker 1: few years. One of the things that I look at
- 4:44Speaker 1: with trucking, the future of trucking, I think we're always
- 4:46Speaker 1: going to need people in those trucks. I just don't
- 4:48Speaker 1: know that we're ever going to be in a position
- 4:50Speaker 1: where we're going to feel safe saying, I'm going to
- 4:52Speaker 1: hit a button and I'm going to just send this
- 4:53Speaker 1: thing on the way without a person behind the wheel.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Do you feel that we're in a position with the
- 4:58Speaker 1: future of trucking where there's always going to be a
- 5:00Speaker 1: person in that truck?
- 5:01Speaker 2: You know, I think it feels that way. If you
- 5:04Speaker 2: think about the size of these trucks, they're, you know, 10,
- 5:07Speaker 2: 20 times heavier and longer than our passenger vehicles. And
- 5:12Speaker 2: require a lot of other logistical items beyond just driving it, right?
- 5:17Speaker 2: I mean, these drivers walk around these vehicles, do a
- 5:19Speaker 2: full inspection, ensure that the loads are secure. And I
- 5:25Speaker 2: think there's a lot that go into it. And so
- 5:27Speaker 2: I think there's a long, long timeline here before you
- 5:30Speaker 2: end up in a scenario where a heavy truck becomes
- 5:35Speaker 2: a personless vehicle. So I do think that there's likely
- 5:39Speaker 2: to be great demand in this industry. There's good pay.
- 5:44Speaker 2: There's lots of evidence around this being a great opportunity
- 5:48Speaker 2: to build a small business off of. About 90% of
- 5:51Speaker 2: the trucking firms in America are less than 10 trucks.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Most of those are all family-owned companies. And those companies
- 5:59Speaker 2: transport about three-quarters of the freight around the country. So
- 6:02Speaker 2: they're doing... Enormous amounts of work as small businesses. So
- 6:07Speaker 2: there's great opportunity, you know, to probably grow yourself a
- 6:11Speaker 2: nice small business outside of, you know, as well as
- 6:14Speaker 2: being a driver.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Well, Steve, thank you for taking your time to chat
- 6:18Speaker 1: with us today. And I'm glad that we get to
- 6:20Speaker 1: celebrate a little bit ahead of time here. National Truck
- 6:22Speaker 1: Driver Appreciation Week, September 13th through the 19th. And again,
- 6:26Speaker 1: that's a big deal. It's coming up next week. Steve,
- 6:28Speaker 1: thank you for your time, sir.
- 6:29Speaker 2: No problem. Thank you, John.
- 6:31Speaker 1: And if you would like to celebrate, another really good
- 6:33Speaker 1: way to do that, like he was saying, if you
- 6:34Speaker 1: see a truck driver when you happen to be out
- 6:36Speaker 1: and about, maybe if you're there at a gas station
- 6:39Speaker 1: and they're filling up, if you say, I'm going to
- 6:41Speaker 1: fill up the tank, that's like 500 bucks, but you
- 6:43Speaker 1: could certainly throw them a Snickers or something. If there's
- 6:45Speaker 1: something that you can do to show your appreciation, again,
- 6:48Speaker 1: next week, September 13th through the 19th, that is the
- 6:50Speaker 1: way to do it. National Truck Driver Appreciation Week.
