- 0:38All of it helps so much to keep us going.
- 0:41OK, I have a really big first story, so we just need to dive
- 0:45right in. Ultraviolet has recalled their
- 0:48product after SPF testing scandal situation.
- 0:53I'm not really sure how to describe this, but it's
- 0:56official. The TGA here in Australia has
- 0:58recalled Ultraviolet lean screen sunscreen and Ultraviolet has
- 1:03removed it from shelves. So I did speak about this
- 1:06situation when it first came out in June, but I am going to
- 1:09rehash this story and provide a bit of a comprehensive timeline.
- 1:14I know this story is maybe feels a little bit outside of Internet
- 1:18culture, but there is a big influencer tie in and there's
- 1:21also just a big, big like social media component tie in to this
- 1:25story. Also, Ultraviolet is an
- 1:27incredibly buzzy like luxe sunscreen brand here in
- 1:31Australia. So this is a huge deal.
- 1:33This is like a Roman Empire for me.
- 1:35This story, I'm not even joking. OK, so the timeline breakdown
- 1:38was inspired by one of my besties, Crystal Andrews.
- 1:41She runs Z Feed, an independent publication.
- 1:44She did a full timeline breakdown in her weekly
- 1:48newsletter on Sunday. I will link it in the show notes
- 1:51for you guys. You should definitely subscribe,
- 1:53but reading her timeline put a lot into perspective for me.
- 1:58So I wanted to give you guys that context and that
- 2:01perspective as well. So know that this timeline and
- 2:04link the inspo for it came from her.
- 2:06OK, so in February, the consumer advocacy group Choice tested 20
- 2:11popular Australian sunscreen labeled as SPF 50 plus.
- 2:15The testing was carried out at Eurofins Derma Test Lab in
- 2:18Sydney and each product sample was decanted into amber glass
- 2:23jars and tested within one hour. Results showed that 16 of the 20
- 2:28products fell below their claimed SPF.
- 2:31The worst result was Ultraviolet's lean screen, which
- 2:34came back with an SPF rating of four.
- 2:37The next lowest product that was tested in this study was SPF 24,
- 2:42so that tells you how big of a discrepancy there was there.
- 2:46Choice alerted Ultraviolet to the results and advised that the
- 2:49product undergo a second round of testing at a different lab.
- 2:53In April, Ultraviolet commissioned its own testing at
- 2:56Princeton Consumer Research PCR in Manchester, England.
- 3:01PCR reports an SPF of 61.7 for lean screen.
- 3:05In May, Choice sent the product for further testing at Normick
- 3:09Shonder Institute lab in Germany.
- 3:12This test also returned a low result SPF 5.
- 3:16S Choice got SPF four and SPF 5, whereas Ultraviolet got SPF
- 3:2161.7. In June, Choice published the
- 3:24results. Mainstream media and social
- 3:26media platforms quickly picked up the story.
- 3:29And obviously the particular attention was on Ultraviolet's
- 3:32SPF of four. Because if you know anything
- 3:35about the Australian side, if you are from Australia, if you
- 3:37have been here or you just know anything about it, our son is so
- 3:39extreme here and there are such high rates of skin cancer here.
- 3:43So SPF testing in this country we have, I mean, as far as I
- 3:46know, like I've been here for almost 10 years, have always
- 3:49been told that they are so incredibly strict with it.
- 3:52And like SPF, like everybody that I know wears SPF 50 all
- 3:56over their body every single day.
- 3:57Like it is absolutely necessary even in the winter, like you
- 4:00just have to. So this was like a huge deal for
- 4:03people that have been using ultraviolet SPF, like lean
- 4:06screen thinking they were getting SPF 50.
- 4:09A lot of people using it every single day because it's a facial
- 4:11sunscreen. And really these results were
- 4:13very shocking. So off the back of Choice
- 4:16publishing their results, the TGA, which is like the
- 4:19regulatory body responsible for sunscreens in Australia, issued
- 4:23a statement saying that they will investigate and quote, take
- 4:26regulatory action as required. I do want to note too, there's a
- 4:29lot of information. I don't know if it's like
- 4:31misinformation or disinformation, but there's a
- 4:33lot of like noise about how choice, you know, was like shady
- 4:37and how they published this. I think there's some confusion
- 4:40around how we received this messaging.
- 4:42People are blaming choice for those like sensationalized click
- 4:45baity headlines when really they just published the the results
- 4:49for the most part and it was, you know the media that picked
- 4:53that up. OK so then right after
- 4:55Ultraviolet post a statement on its website which was later
- 4:58deleted. But my friend Crystal did link
- 5:01it. I believe it's archived online.
- 5:02They called the SPF 4 result quote scientifically impossible.
- 5:06The brand suggested that Choice mishandled the product, tested
- 5:09the wrong item, or used an insufficient sample size.
- 5:13They also said they've never received a substantial amount of
- 5:16consumer complaints of like sunburns or anything that would
- 5:19indicate that their SPF was not up to par.
- 5:22Then one of the Co founders, Ava posted on TikTok saying I put
- 5:25lean screen on my children and I still would tomorrow.
- 5:28Basically defending the brand, defending the product and the
- 5:31brand was very much defending itself in the comments section.
- 5:34Then Choice released a follow up statement standing by its
- 5:36results, explaining its testing methodology and publishing
- 5:40reports on all 20 products tested.
- 5:42OK, this is a part of the timeline that I feel has been
- 5:45missing. So people kind of got over this
- 5:48story. So like a couple weeks after the
- 5:50initial bombshell of SPF four and like the media craze around
- 5:55it, the ABC on July 4th published an investigation into
- 5:59PCR, which is the lab used by Ultraviolet.
- 6:01Again, I think that this is the piece that a lot of people are
- 6:04missing. Industry experts told the ABC
- 6:06that PCR results for lean screen appear unusually consistent,
- 6:09with one saying he had, quote, never seen results like PCRS in
- 6:13his entire career. Half of the brands that failed
- 6:16the choice test also relied on PCR for their own certification
- 6:20testing. A couple days later, the
- 6:22Australian Financial Review published an article that
- 6:25essentially claimed that PCR like falsely claims results on
- 6:29products. And this story also revealed
- 6:32that Ultraviolet does not formulate lean screen
- 6:35themselves. The sunscreen is manufactured by
- 6:37Wild Child Laboratories in Perth.
- 6:40And then about a month later on Friday, Ultraviolet announced
- 6:44that it is pulling Lean Screen from the market after additional
- 6:47testing showed in consistencies. The brand also confirmed they
- 6:51are no longer using PCR for testing or Wild child
- 6:55Laboratories for manufacturing. So this is a snippet of their
- 6:58announcement. They say, you know, we
- 7:00prioritize your skin in your health.
- 7:02Before we go further, we want to make it clear that this only
- 7:05concerns the performance of Lean Screen.
- 7:07We had multiple independent labs conduct new tests of Lean Screen
- 7:11this week. We received results from those
- 7:13tests that demonstrated significant and candidly a
- 7:15typical variability across 8 different tests.
- 7:18Lean Screen has now returned SPF data of 4102120633, 6061 and 64.
- 7:26That wasn't good enough for us and it isn't good enough for
- 7:29you. Given this pattern of
- 7:30inconsistency and testing, we have decided to withdraw Lean
- 7:33Slash Velvet Screen from the market effective immediately.
- 7:37And then they had a tile where they explained all the different
- 7:40things that they were going to do to, you know, rectify this
- 7:43situation and they are going to give customers refunds.
- 7:46Now Mecca, which is Australia's basically biggest beauty
- 7:49retailer, is reportedly pulling another buzzy Aussie skin care
- 7:54brand, Naked Sundays, from its shelves as they apparently use
- 7:58the same lab for their SPF products.
- 8:00There is a lot of debate online right now about the brand's
- 8:03initial reaction. And they're kind of like, quote
- 8:06UN quote transparency now. But I don't really want to open
- 8:10that kettle of fish, OK? What I wanted to focus on was
- 8:12the influencer side of things. As someone who used to work in
- 8:16the Australian beauty media industry, I can tell you it is
- 8:20like a cult. And there were so many
- 8:22influencers and beauty journalists alike who publicly
- 8:26defended Ultraviolet and like slammed Choice.
- 8:29Obviously that hasn't necessarily aged well.
- 8:33And I think what we can learn from this as consumers is just
- 8:37how fast influencers are to defend their paycheck because so
- 8:41many of the influencers and creators and journalists that
- 8:45were defending Ultraviolet and slamming Choice, they claim or
- 8:49brand themselves as experts and educators in skin care, in
- 8:53beauty, in that industry. So in theory, you know, their
- 8:57main focus should always be on their audience, who they are
- 9:01providing education and information for.
- 9:04Their allegiance should be to their audience.
- 9:07And obviously we didn't necessarily see this as the
- 9:10case. Like I know this situation was
- 9:12like confusing and bizarre. I'm not like putting the blame
- 9:14on influencers, but I think so many of the biggest beauty in
- 9:18skin care influencers and journalists in this country
- 9:21backed Ultraviolet rather than suggesting to their audience to,
- 9:24I don't know, like take a beat, wait For more information, maybe
- 9:28find another SPF in the meantime until we got more information.
- 9:32I think the entire PR slash like communications around this
- 9:37entire situation was a bit of a mess.
- 9:40It was hard to watch. I don't know if this is going to
- 9:43be totally the end of it. I think there it's possible that
- 9:45there's more brands that come out that need to be recalled,
- 9:48but it's very scary. SPF 4 wearing SPF 4IN Australian
- 9:52sun as your daily sunscreen is honestly horrifying.
- 9:56I hope we don't get any more information like this.
- 9:58Like I hope that this is the end of it.
- 10:00And I also do want to say like, these are female founders and I
- 10:04cannot imagine what they have been going through.
- 10:07But I also feel like with great responsibility, like choosing to
- 10:11produce essentially like a medical product like sunscreen,
- 10:15you know, comes great responsibility, not to quote
- 10:17Spider Man or whoever says that in that movie.
- 10:19So I don't want to add to the pylon.
- 10:21You know, I think this is a really horrible situation to
- 10:23begin with. I can't imagine what they're
- 10:25going through. But I think the reaction that
- 10:28I've seen from honestly some of my ex peers has been
- 10:33questionable. All right, the next story that I
- 10:35have for you guys, Bobby Altoff has announced that she is
- 10:39starting a new podcast called Not This Again.
- 10:44So those of you that were like, she's not done forever, when I
- 10:48announced that her podcast was ending, you guys were right.
- 10:50I wasn't so sure. But no, you guys were right.
- 10:53So in the video announcing the podcast, Bobby is with Drake,
- 10:57which is a call back to her viral moment in 2023.
- 11:00Her viral interview with him sitting on what seems to be a
- 11:02bed in front of a very pretty view.
- 11:05The video is basically just them trying to describe the podcast.
- 11:07It's very deadpan. It's very dry humor.
- 11:11It isn't exactly clear, like what each episode of Not This
- 11:15Again will look like going forward.
- 11:17But based on the trailer, it seems like the exact same vibe
- 11:20as her old podcast. So I'm starting to think maybe
- 11:23her old podcast was just dropped by its network and she just took
- 11:27the concept and is, you know, moving on to a different network
- 11:30or doing it independently by herself and just going to keep
- 11:32the same format. But yeah, I understand the
- 11:34heart. Back to the Drake episode.
- 11:36But I also do think it's interesting for her to align
- 11:38herself with Drake, given everything that went on with him
- 11:41and Kendrick. You know, I think she is
- 11:43obviously trying to kind of chase that level of virality and
- 11:46buzziness again, especially for the launch of this.
- 11:48But I don't know, it's an interesting choice, All right?
- 11:52And the last story that I have for you guys is a very sad one.
- 11:55Lil Nas X has been detained and hospitalized.
- 11:59In the early hours of Thursday morning.
- 12:01Last week, police in Los Angeles were called to investigate a
- 12:04report of a naked man walking through the streets.
- 12:07This man was Lil Nas X. The video has since been
- 12:10obtained by TMZ. I'm not going to share a clip of
- 12:12it just out of privacy because there is something I would say
- 12:16like definitely going on with him in the video.
- 12:19But you can see him walking down the street wearing cowboy boots
- 12:22and underwear. Lil Nas X was subsequently taken
- 12:25to hospital and also booked on suspicion for obstructing a
- 12:29police officer. Pulling from statements made by
- 12:31police spokesperson Charles Miller.
- 12:33Quote, upon arrival, the suspect charged at officers and was
- 12:36taken into custody. He was transported to a local
- 12:39hospital for possible overdose and placed under arrest for
- 12:42battery on a police officer. So obviously, many people are
- 12:45really upset to see Lil Nas X in this situation and are wishing
- 12:48him the best. There's been a lot of reflection
- 12:51on his rise to fame and how he was treated by the industry that
- 12:54would have led him to this point.
- 12:56Quote. The amount of racism and
- 12:58homophobia Lil Nas X has had to contend with while being a cog
- 13:01in the wheel of these already dehumanizing record labels is
- 13:04truly unimaginable. I wish him love and privacy,
- 13:08wrote Matt, 14. So there has been speculation
- 13:11that Lil Nas X has been dealing with addiction or just dealing
- 13:15with a lot of like mental health battles over the past couple of
- 13:18years. I will say that some people
- 13:20thought this video was a marketing stunt for his album,
- 13:26which could be a whole deep dive episode on its own, of kind of
- 13:32our obsession with looking for like covert marketing schemes,
- 13:37Easter eggs. Everything's a conspiracy theory
- 13:40in the music industry and pop culture right now.
- 13:42We touched on that a little bit in the deep dive from Friday.
- 13:45But, yeah, obviously that was not the case.
- 13:48But he's also been dealing with some health issues.
- 13:50He revealed in April of this year that he had been
- 13:52hospitalized after experiencing a sudden paralysis of his face.
- 13:57So, yeah, this is just horrible. I completely agree with the fans
- 14:01who, you know, are concerned about how steep his rise to fame
- 14:05was, how sudden it was, the lack of support around him in that
- 14:08moment. And, yeah, I can't imagine how
- 14:12difficult that would be. I think it's really sick that
- 14:14people are posting this clip and and you know, if you do see it,
- 14:18don't give it engagement click like block user or not
- 14:21interested like don't engage because that's why people are
- 14:24posting this, right? They want those views.
- 14:27They want the engagement. Don't give it to them like this
- 14:30should be a private video. I think it's I think it's
- 14:34fucked. Anyways guys that's it for mini
- 14:36scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 14:38I love you guys. Please remember to rate review
- 14:41and subscribe. Buy us a coffee if you feel so
- 14:44inclined. Spotify star rate US and I will
