- 0:28Welcome in to another exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:31I am your host Bubba Starts, and with me today is singer songwriter Katie Lang.
- 0:35Katie, welcome to the show.
- 0:36Hi.
- 0:37Thank you for having me.
- 0:39It is absolutely my pleasure.
- 0:41You've been a member of our Midwest original music organization group for a little while
- 0:46now.
- 0:46I appreciate that so much, and I've been following your career down there on the 3rd
- 0:51Coast as it's so eloquently called.
- 0:54We'd like to know a little bit of your backstory before we get too far into everything
- 0:58that you're doing and talking about some really awesome award nominations you got coming up.
- 1:03Yeah.
- 1:04So I got started actually when I was very, very young.
- 1:09At two years old, I pulled myself up onto the bench of my grandma's old piano in her den and
- 1:16started playing around with the keys.
- 1:19And so when my grandma and my mom saw my interest there, my grandma played piano.
- 1:26Her husband was a pastor, so she played piano in the church.
- 1:31So she knew some piano.
- 1:32She took Scotch tape and dry erase markers and actually labeled all the keys on the piano with
- 1:39the letter names.
- 1:41So when I started going and picking out those songs, I could get the, letter names and write
- 1:47them down and be able to go back and play the songs later.
- 1:51So when I was about four years old, I wanna say, the first full song I picked out by myself
- 1:59was Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
- 2:01So you hear a little nod to that in one of the songs that I recently released on my EP.
- 2:08How fun.
- 2:09How fun.
- 2:10I love that's one of the first things I do.
- 2:12I have had a couple of friends over there, and I'm not, you know, a guitar teacher by any
- 2:17means.
- 2:17But that would be the first thing that I laid out to them was to kinda draw the guitar and
- 2:23then to put all the notes in the spaces.
- 2:25And now, of course, you can buy those posters or print them online or, you know, whatever.
- 2:29I think my wife, when she got a keyboard recently, we just bought a sticker pack.
- 2:33Right?
- 2:34And we were able to put the stickers on there, but love that grandma, did it the old fashioned
- 2:38way.
- 2:39And it's so it's so awesome that they saw an interest in it for you.
- 2:44And instead of telling you to get down from there, which a lot of parents and grandparents
- 2:48would, they embraced it.
- 2:50And now look what it's turned into for you.
- 2:52That's so amazing.
- 2:53Yeah.
- 2:54And, you know, it it it's so young.
- 2:56They couldn't find a teacher who was willing to take me to give me lessons.
- 3:00They all said I was too young.
- 3:01I would answer too small.
- 3:02I wouldn't be able to do it.
- 3:03Yeah.
- 3:06They they they could not believe that I was I was figuring it out and, like, actually playing
- 3:11songs so little.
- 3:13So that's my grandma took that initiative to help teach me until I got in first grade, and
- 3:17we finally found a teacher who would give me lessons when I was six.
- 3:22Yeah.
- 3:23And even then, very a lot younger than most people would be comfortable giving lessons to
- 3:27and really incredible.
- 3:30What a story.
- 3:30And now here you are, a award nominated artist out there.
- 3:35I know you got some really cool stuff coming up here, new singles that you've released.
- 3:41You know, what was in between there?
- 3:43Obviously, a lot of learning early on, but when did you start playing out and recording music
- 3:48on your own?
- 3:50So I've actually only been gigging for a little over two years now.
- 3:55I stayed in music all through school by junior high.
- 3:59By the time I finished junior high, I had maxed out the teachers that I had.
- 4:03And so I kept teaching myself through high school until I got to college.
- 4:09And then once I got to college, with my music degree over here at Pearl River Community
- 4:16College, in Poplarville right here where I live, I started taking lessons there and kind
- 4:22of getting getting the the push to really want to start gigging and wanna start putting myself
- 4:29out there.
- 4:30So I reached out to some locals where I went to high school in Franklinton.
- 4:35They have the Washington Parish Free Fair out there.
- 4:38And during December, they always do a Christmas event.
- 4:41And so I reached out to them, and they had me come and play some Christmas music out there.
- 4:46So that was my first ever time going out and playing in public.
- 4:51It was a little freaky gig.
- 4:53They set me up with a cute little backdrop and a Christmas tree, and I brought my little
- 4:57keyboard out there and set up and, borrowed some speakers from a family friend and just set
- 5:04up out there and, you know, played for the community where I, grew up going to school.
- 5:09And everybody loved it so much, and that kind of that kinda gave me the the sense of, wow.
- 5:15Okay.
- 5:15People actually do want to listen to me.
- 5:18People actually want want to hear this.
- 5:21And so I I kept going.
- 5:24And about a month later, my husband's childhood best friend, Jared Dawes, was starting a band
- 5:32looking for a keyboard and vocalist.
- 5:35And so as fate had it, here I was.
- 5:39And, so that's how I got involved with them.
- 5:41And, you know, we've we've just been pushing it out and going all over the place ever since.
- 5:46It's kinda crazy how fast it took off.
- 5:49Yeah.
- 5:49How amazing.
- 5:51And, obviously, playing for as long as you have.
- 5:55Were you writing at an early age as well, even just melodies that you were writing, or was it
- 6:00all just learning how to play other music that you were hearing?
- 6:03Were you creating on your own, I guess, is kind of my my question.
- 6:09I did a lot of playing by ear early on.
- 6:12I also learned how to read music really early, but I really liked picking out the songs by
- 6:16ear.
- 6:17So I did a lot of that, but it was a
- 6:18lot of game.
- 6:19Right?
- 6:20Yeah.
- 6:21Yeah.
- 6:21I thought it was really fun.
- 6:22That's what I would do for fun on the weekends.
- 6:24I was that little music nerd sitting in her bedroom.
- 6:27I'd be like, oh, I really like this song that I heard on the radio.
- 6:30Let me listen to it over and over and over and over again until I can pick it out myself.
- 6:36So I I did a I did a lot of that learning other people's songs.
- 6:40I didn't really start writing full, like, full music until about twenty nineteen.
- 6:48I was twenty twenty one years old and engaged at the time.
- 6:54So the first song that I ever wrote actually came from my wedding vows.
- 6:59I wrote it as a surprise wedding present for my husband and did a surprise performance at our,
- 7:06reception after the wedding with the song.
- 7:08So that's my single that was released in 2021 called I do.
- 7:13That is beautiful.
- 7:16What a what a way to break into, the music scene, if you will, as a songwriter with,
- 7:24something so personal and something that I hope other people, you know, take and use at their
- 7:31wedding in the future as well.
- 7:33Oh, gosh.
- 7:34That would be so cool.
- 7:36Well, we just gotta get it out there so they know it, and and, undoubtedly, they they will
- 7:41for sure.
- 7:43So now that's kinda led us to to, this point, right, where you've been working, now as a, you
- 7:50know, kinda, I guess, gigging musician now for a little while.
- 7:54You've been writing your own songs, now releasing more singles out there.
- 7:59What is, you know, the award show you're I know that you're nominated for.
- 8:03Go ahead, and we'll talk about that, and then we'll talk about the future of Katie Lang.
- 8:08So the nominations are for the band that I'm in.
- 8:11It's Jared Dawes and the Dusk Singers.
- 8:13So we've been nominated for the second year in a row for best country band.
- 8:18We actually won last year, and so we're we're renominated again this year.
- 8:23And then our lead, Jared Dawes, is nominated for, gosh.
- 8:29I think it's best male vocalist, rising star, philanthropy, and a couple other categories.
- 8:35But, yeah, the the band is nominated for best country band again for the second year in a
- 8:41row, so we're super proud of that.
- 8:42I'm really proud to be a part of that.
- 8:44They're my best friends, and, we love what we do.
- 8:48I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.
- 8:50Does the band stay pretty busy down there then?
- 8:54Oh, yeah.
- 8:55Yeah.
- 8:55We've been we've been touring for about two years now, locally and some out of state as
- 9:01well.
- 9:02We just recently actually got back from Georgia last month.
- 9:05We went up there and played a couple of shows, for the New Year.
- 9:09So that was really fun.
- 9:10And we've got some things that we're planning for the rest of the year that we can't talk
- 9:15about yet.
- 9:17We're still so early in it.
- 9:19Right?
- 9:20Yeah.
- 9:20So what does I mean, obviously, you have the band and it's like a family.
- 9:26So does your own music career, does it kind of ride in the back seat to what the band is doing
- 9:33and you just kinda rolling with that and not putting a lot of focus on your own career?
- 9:39I would say it's about fifty fifty now.
- 9:41For the first couple of years, I was kind of taking a backseat to things and just kind of
- 9:46riding with the band and doing that thing.
- 9:48But now I'm in my last semester of college, So, my schedule's about to be a lot more open.
- 9:54I'm gonna have some more time to really put the work into my music that I've been wanting to
- 9:59do.
- 9:59So, that's why I had my EP that I released last month, Backroads and Daydreams, to kind of
- 10:05boost things up for the new year, and I plan to keep releasing some more music this year and,
- 10:11you know, keep that keep that going.
- 10:13I don't plan on stopping this time.
- 10:15And if you look back at my previous music, I released one in 2021, and then there was a
- 10:20couple releases in 2023.
- 10:22And so then it took me another three years to get the EP out, but, I don't I don't wanna put
- 10:27the space between it again.
- 10:28So I'm gonna really have time to put the work into it now.
- 10:32I'm really excited for that.
- 10:34Awesome.
- 10:34Well, we're so excited for you, Katie.
- 10:37Where can everybody find you online, both the band, obviously, but you yourself as well?
- 10:44So I'm on Instagram at katie lang official, and I'm also on Facebook at katie lang.
- 10:50And then we have the Jared Dawson, the Dusk Singers Facebook page, and that's the Dusk
- 10:55Singers, d u s k, not the dust singers.
- 11:01And, yeah, that's, that's where we post the most of the stuff.
- 11:03I'm also on YouTube at k d lang official as well.
- 11:08Awesome.
- 11:08Well, we're gonna go follow you everywhere here at the scene projects and, make sure that we're
- 11:13following along on both your career and that of the band as well.
- 11:17I'm gonna see if I can put in for some media credentials for the 3rd Coast, music awards
- 11:22down there.
- 11:24We happen to be in the area at the same time anyway, so a short trip to come up to and and
- 11:30maybe take part in the award show as well.
- 11:32So, Katie, thank you so much for being a part.
- 11:35To see you there.
- 11:36Oh, man.
- 11:36That would be awesome.
- 11:37And I'm sorry that you won't get to join us at our songwriter showcase tour because of it.
- 11:41But
- 11:42No.
- 11:42I know.
- 11:42I wanted to be there so bad.
- 11:44Well, maybe we can work it in with the award show.
- 11:46Who knows?
- 11:46We'll make it all work.
- 11:47We'll host you guys on
- 11:48the tour and
- 11:50and get it done regardless.
- 11:51So what a great time to sit here and share a conversation with you.
- 11:56Thank you for being part of the Midwest original music organization as well.
- 12:00Thanks for having me.
- 12:00Thank you for being part of the scene.
- 12:04Yeah.
- 12:04Thank you.
- 12:05Y'all are awesome, and I love what y'all do.
- 12:07I love the support for the local music.
- 12:09It's so important to have the support for the local live music because, you know, if if we're
- 12:14not pushing it out, who's going to?
- 12:18You nailed it.
- 12:20Nice to meet you, Katie.
- 12:21Have a great day.
- 12:22Nice meeting you too.
- 12:23You too.
- 12:24Thank you.
