- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Wednesday.
- 0:16It is the 5th of June and I'm so glad that you've tapped on play.
- 0:21Hello, hello, hello. You know how the people we love
- 0:25are into things that we are much less into, and because they're
- 0:29into it, you're kind of into it as well as you support them and
- 0:33get involved at their site. Well, such is my relationship
- 0:37with fishing. I grew up in a family where
- 0:39everyone else loved fishing and I really did it because I didn't
- 0:42like eat it and didn't like to touch them and I didn't like to
- 0:45catch them and spend a day standing around trying to catch
- 0:48them. But now I find myself the father
- 0:50of three boys, the youngest of whom is just loving fishing.
- 0:55And so my relationship with fishing continues.
- 0:58And these days I can find more joy in the process of fishing
- 1:02because it's not just my joy, but it's his as well, which is
- 1:04awesome. And today, did you realise, is
- 1:07the International Day for the Fight Against Illegal,
- 1:10Unreported and Unregulated Fishing.
- 1:14So go get your fishing licence as people if you're gonna fish
- 1:17in freshwater rivers. And there is a world of
- 1:20information online about the things that we can do to make
- 1:23sure that we are getting our fish from sources that are
- 1:27caring for the ocean and all of her goodness.
- 1:32So enough with the fishiness. Let us get back to the
- 1:35existential questions of life in Ecclesiastes.
- 1:39Today we continue this interesting journey of pondering
- 1:44the larger questions with this voice of wisdom from our
- 1:48teacher. So let's do that reading
- 1:51together. Ecclesiastes chapter 5.
- 2:05As you enter the House of God, keep your ears open and your
- 2:09mouth shut. It's evil to make mindless
- 2:12offerings to God. Don't make rash promises and
- 2:16don't be hasty in bringing matters before God.
- 2:19After all, God is in heaven and you are here on earth.
- 2:25So let your words be few. Too much activity gives you
- 2:29restless dreams. Too many words make you a fool.
- 2:35When you make a promise to God, don't delay in following
- 2:38through, for God takes no pleasure in fools.
- 2:42Keep all the promises you make to Him.
- 2:45It is better to say nothing than to make a promise and not keep
- 2:48it. Don't let your mouth make you
- 2:50sin, and don't defend yourself by telling the temple messenger
- 2:55that the promise you made was a mistake that would make God
- 2:58angry and he might wipe out everything you have achieved.
- 3:03Talk is cheap, like daydreams and other useless activities.
- 3:07Fear God instead. Don't be surprised if you see a
- 3:12poor person being oppressed by the powerful and if justice is
- 3:16being miscarried throughout the land, for every official is
- 3:20under orders from higher up and matters of justice get lost in
- 3:24red tape and bureaucracy. Even the king milks the land for
- 3:28his own profit. Those who love money will never
- 3:32have enough. How meaningless to think that
- 3:35wealth brings true happiness. The more you have, the more
- 3:39people come to help you spend it.
- 3:41So what good is wealth, except perhaps to watch it slip through
- 3:45your fingers? People who work hard sleep well,
- 3:50whether they eat little or much. But the rich seldom get a good
- 3:54night's sleep. There is another serious problem
- 3:57I've seen under the sun. Hoarding riches harms the saver.
- 4:02Money is put into risky investments that turn sour and
- 4:07everything is lost. In the end, there is nothing
- 4:10left to pass on to one's children.
- 4:13We all come to the end of our lives as naked and empty handed
- 4:18as on the day we were born. We can't take our riches with
- 4:21us, and this too is a very serious problem.
- 4:26People leave this world no better off than when they came.
- 4:29All their hard work is for nothing, like working for the
- 4:33wind. Throughout their lives, they
- 4:35live under a cloud, frustrated, discouraged, and angry.
- 4:41Even so, I've noticed one thing at least that is good.
- 4:46It is good for people to eat, drink and enjoy their work under
- 4:51the sun during the short life God has given them and to accept
- 4:55their lot in life. And it is a good thing to
- 4:59receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it, to
- 5:04enjoy your work and accept your lot in life.
- 5:07This is indeed a gift from God. God keeps such people so busy
- 5:12enjoying life that they take no time to brood over the past.
- 5:28Our Lord, we hear in this chapter that bureaucracy is as
- 5:33old as time itself. There is so much that we can
- 5:39become frustrated by as we are pushing to achieve more and get
- 5:44things done that the teacher here tells us that to toil and
- 5:52have a hard earned sleep at night is a good thing.
- 5:57But not in chasing after grandiose outcomes well beyond
- 6:01our means, but to find joy in what we have and to enjoy the
- 6:07time with those we loved. So thank you, Lord, for Your
- 6:12truth, for your focus to live under you, our God and our
- 6:18Provider, with those that You give us to share our lives with.
- 6:25Draw us continually back to the here and the now, basking in our
- 6:31relationship with you, our ever loving, ever gracious God.
- 6:36We are so, so appreciative of you and that you would lavish
- 6:43your love on us and all because of what Jesus has done for us.
- 6:49So we thank you for him and pray all of this in His name, Amen.
