- 3:25Well, Jerry, thank you for coming to our podcast today.
- 3:28Thank you for having me. Of course, of course.
- 3:31So how did Dusty tell you to come to our podcast again?
- 3:34I got a messenger. They said, does Thursday work?
- 3:39Yeah. Talk about professionality.
- 3:42Based on a conversation, you know, from months ago, I I was
- 3:45like, for what? I don't know.
- 3:49Oh, yeah, we had a conversation on it.
- 3:51As well, what was he talking? I thought he was joking when he
- 3:53said he wanted me on the podcast.
- 3:55You know, as busy folks and you understand as well you know, we
- 3:59have complicated schedules and so I.
- 4:03I expect others to have the same memories.
- 4:05Be and. What?
- 4:07I mean, nobody like you. It's like, yeah, he did say
- 4:10that. So it.
- 4:11Just took a second. Yeah, he took a second.
- 4:14I got it. Guys are so simple.
- 4:16I love it so Thursday. Yeah, that was this morning when
- 4:21he sent it. No.
- 4:25Imagine, Imagine you're like, what's the day?
- 4:29It's Thursday, yeah. So today.
- 4:30Little more. Little more than that, little
- 4:32more time. If that was true, that means I
- 4:36got some pull. That is true.
- 4:39That's true. Either that or I don't have a
- 4:40life. I know this guy.
- 4:43He calls like five days a week. He's got time.
- 4:49Well, I'm glad it worked out because we really wanted you on
- 4:51the podcast. We have been talking about you
- 4:53in our group chat and so we're excited to hear about.
- 4:58Just what you guys are doing with music.
- 5:00I'm going to be real honest. I don't listen to country music.
- 5:03I'm a big country fan. Yeah.
- 5:05So at least so at least you have someone that you're you can try
- 5:08to convert right now and you have someone who's already a fan
- 5:12because right now I kind of. Like almost brought my boots in
- 5:15too. Yeah, we were supposed to wear
- 5:18that. I forgot.
- 5:19About that that's he did tell us, he told us to wear.
- 5:22Our hats and. Boots.
- 5:23Yeah, yeah. Asked if everybody had hats.
- 5:26Not that I have one. I lost mine a long time ago, so
- 5:29I don't have one currently, but I was like, well, they got
- 5:31something. I don't wear them very much.
- 5:33Yeah. Yeah, I just.
- 5:36Don't. Yeah, I think it.
- 5:37Was a cowboy hat. I think most of the times that
- 5:39I've seen you actually perform like.
- 5:41Your OR? Yeah.
- 5:42And I wear chunk clothes a lot. So love that.
- 5:45Yeah, what's hot? You prefer more in the?
- 5:47Hot so, so, so you a summer boy? Yeah, yeah.
- 5:52Flip flop. Flip flop song was so-called.
- 5:54You don't wear that the hanas then?
- 5:57No, no, no. What is that?
- 5:59The hanas are the ones that are made out of fabric.
- 6:03There's. The cowboy hats that are made.
- 6:05Out of the cowboy hats, I'll tell you.
- 6:06Talking about the No, no, no. I can't even wear those in the
- 6:09winter time. Yeah, because I have.
- 6:11I do not have a Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:14That's why I don't wear cowboy hats.
- 6:15I mean, even that straw one is yeah, in that picture.
- 6:18I can't wear hats. So hot I can't.
- 6:21I have a big head, so I don't say it I wasn't.
- 6:23Gonna. Say anything?
- 6:25But I did notice that. It's OK.
- 6:28It's OK. I'm living with it.
- 6:30I'm living with it. Can't.
- 6:32Say that around me you can I'mma make it say the story again if
- 6:39you said. You want me to?
- 6:40I will. I mean if you want to.
- 6:43Just. At the end of the episode, at
- 6:45the end of this episode, I will tell you why I have a big kid.
- 6:49That's good. You're gonna love it.
- 6:51Yeah, I just remembered. Yeah.
- 6:54I can't take her every time, she says.
- 6:57That. That image comes.
- 7:00To mind I can't. Take you.
- 7:02Seriously. Anyways, Jared, let's let's talk
- 7:05about you for a little bit. Are you born and raised in
- 7:07Wichita? No, I'm born.
- 7:11And partly raised in Oklahoma, southeastern Oklahoma.
- 7:14I moved to Wichita in like 88. What part of Oklahoma are you
- 7:19from? I lived in a bunch of towns, SE.
- 7:22It's like Poto you. Know what's funny?
- 7:25I know where Poto is at. No way.
- 7:27Yeah, I know how Oklahoma Poto sold.
- 7:29Cell phone How? Do you know how so?
- 7:30I have family lives in Howe, OK and Poto.
- 7:34Yeah, my. So when you drive to Howe the.
- 7:37The Long Lake resort, Long Lake resort that that was my
- 7:41grandpa's, all that. Oh really?
- 7:42That's cool because it's like, I remember cuz like when you pass
- 7:46Poteau and then like, you have that RV place right next to it.
- 7:49And then his driveway, my, my grandpa's driveway is right at
- 7:52the top of that hill. Take a left and he.
- 7:54Has. That's crazy.
- 7:56Do you know, cuz like there's that a supply shop there too as
- 7:59well, you know, the Royal Field Supply?
- 8:01Yeah, yeah, yeah, there man. See, I told.
- 8:04You. I mean, that's.
- 8:05Yeah, that my grandpa's land starts at the.
- 8:07Next intersection. That's crazy.
- 8:09Yeah, cuz my my goddad has a chicken farm out there.
- 8:13Everybody has a chicken. Farm.
- 8:16Everybody has a chicken farm. Those other things.
- 8:18Oh, it's bad. Oh my goodness.
- 8:20When those doors open, you're like, whoosh, What the hell is
- 8:23that? Horse and cow?
- 8:24Yes. And and horses, cuz horse shit
- 8:27after a while also stinks well. You if it's not clear.
- 8:30There's a bunch of chicken in this in this little house.
- 8:32It's, yeah, there's they're 80,000 and one.
- 8:37House. Yeah, in some, I mean, they're
- 8:3930,000 or 80,000. There's like 3 or 4 houses.
- 8:43And it's not the crap, it's the. I mean, it's the it's.
- 8:45It's. Very high ammonia.
- 8:48Oh, Oh yeah. It's worse than like Kappy.
- 8:51Yeah. Damn.
- 8:52Really. OK, that's.
- 8:53Pretty bad, OK? I don't know.
- 8:55You ever shaken a? Have you ever shaken the hand of
- 8:57a chicken catcher? No.
- 8:59Oh boy. What does that what?
- 9:00Well, so they actually, they actually go they, I don't know
- 9:03if they do it this way anymore, but there's guys that.
- 9:06They get out of the truck, they go and they have to catch the
- 9:09chickens and load them up before they go process them.
- 9:12They put like one leg, they put five between each finger and
- 9:18they're holding them like this. And then they go and they put
- 9:20them in the cage and then they go catch more.
- 9:23So they're, you know, they're they're carrying 15 in each
- 9:28hand. And then go.
- 9:30And I mean, their hands are just tore up.
- 9:32Damn. Yeah, it's tough.
- 9:35A tough job. It is.
- 9:38And it's hot too. It's very, very hot.
- 9:40And those houses, dude, they're long.
- 9:42They're like. Oh yeah.
- 9:43Super long. Like, yeah, I don't know, just
- 9:47not the size of this building either.
- 9:49It's like probably too. And not interest bank, but like
- 9:54like. A little more of the other
- 9:56parking lot. Yes, OK.
- 9:59Yeah. Mmhmm.
- 10:00Yeah, yeah, they're long there. There is long.
- 10:02Is that what we're looking at right now, poultry?
- 10:07You looked up, chicken. Catch our hands.
- 10:10You guys should stop what you're doing.
- 10:11Right now and look. Up chicken, Catch our hands on
- 10:14Google so that you can see what we're talking.
- 10:15About it will not disappoint it. Would not.
- 10:17It would. Not you'll find a drumstick on
- 10:19there too. Yeah.
- 10:20So, you know, they pump those full of steroids, so they grow
- 10:23fast and that's. That's why we're all sick here.
- 10:26It's why we're all unhealthy, because everything's pumped full
- 10:28of chemicals. But.
- 10:29So I had a story about when I I used to do in home sales, and
- 10:34this was in Kansas, and I went up to the house.
- 10:38I had an appointment, I went up to the house and the biggest
- 10:40Rottweiler I've ever seen is on a logging chain in the front
- 10:45yard. I mean, this dog's head was
- 10:47massive, his feet were massive and I've seen big dogs.
- 10:51And I just walked up to it, pet it.
- 10:52The lady came running out the door saying no, no, no, don't
- 10:55go. They had him on a.
- 10:57Chain that because it broken everything smaller.
- 11:00So I comment once I get inside about how huge this dog is.
- 11:04I've never seen a Rottweiler that big.
- 11:06I mean it looked like it was busting out of its skin.
- 11:09And she goes, well we just moved here from western Arkansas and
- 11:14we had a chicken farm and so when he was a puppy, you know
- 11:17when they had chickens died, they would just give the raw
- 11:22meat and so this. So the steroids are.
- 11:26Are pretty high level when they're young.
- 11:27You know when the chickens are young, yeah.
- 11:30So this dog was basically eating the steroid eating steroid
- 11:36ridden chicken meat. That dog is buff and suck.
- 11:38Yeah, it was. Damn, what's that say about our
- 11:41bodies, though? Yeah, well, it it reduces later
- 11:44on, you know, I mean, yeah, yeah, they're, I think the life
- 11:47of a chicken is like six weeks or something.
- 11:49They give them so much. Yeah, might be a little longer
- 11:52than that. But anyway, yeah, there's a lot
- 11:54of poultry farms and. Damn.
- 11:56Southeast Oklahoma. So yeah, I moved from there.
- 11:58Nice. Nice.
- 12:00Did not work in the chicken. Oh, you didn't.
- 12:02Work. You don't even have to blink to
- 12:03go to the. Next.
- 12:04But my grandpa did have. He owned the Chicken Hut, which
- 12:07was a restaurant. It was a Pizza Hut franchise,
- 12:09but chicken. In Poto.
- 12:10In poto, yeah. In poto, yeah.
- 12:13Man, I want to go to a chicken Hut.
- 12:15Man, I wish they were still around.
- 12:17I didn't have Kentucky Fried Chicken until I was probably 12
- 12:21because. Chicken had had the best
- 12:23chicken. I always thought it was my
- 12:27grandpa's restaurant and he started it and it was his idea.
- 12:30And then literally like six years ago I was, you know,
- 12:34they're all past now. And and I was talking to some
- 12:38family and found out that no, it was a franchise, it was a Pizza
- 12:42Hut franchise and they decided they wanted to.
- 12:46Start this chicken 1 so it looked just like the old Pizza
- 12:49Huts that had the red roof, but it had a yellow roof and my
- 12:53grandpa was the first franchisee, so he had he had
- 12:58one. There was maybe, I don't know,
- 12:59not very many, but anyway, I but I I never knew that until as an
- 13:03adult, you know? Like my life, my whole life has
- 13:06been. I'm over here telling all my
- 13:09friends my grandpa made this chicken Hut, Yeah.
- 13:15That's crazy. I didn't know that was a thing.
- 13:16So is are they not a thing? Anymore.
- 13:18Oh no no no. His was the 1st and the last one
- 13:21I believe. I mean it like sorry by last I
- 13:27mean he they they all closed and he stayed in and.
- 13:31Yeah, Gotcha. Gotcha.
- 13:33Yeah, it caught fire and and then he.
- 13:36Decided you know, he was about retirement, so he just he
- 13:39closed. It, yeah.
- 13:40You want to hear it kept the building and rented it to a
- 13:42subway. You guys want to hear something
- 13:43funny about chicken? So my brother went to go get
- 13:47chicken for us, fried chicken to church chickens.
- 13:50But he went to the wrong chicken place and he's like, hey, I'm at
- 13:54the wrong church chicken. He's like.
- 13:56He, like, freaked. Out.
- 13:57He freaked out. And then I was like, OK, I was
- 13:59like we'll just get it from there then, you know, like and
- 14:01he's like, well, I ordered like 20 piece chickens and I was
- 14:05like, OK, whoa, just tell him that, you know, can we not, um,
- 14:08you know, if we could get a refund.
- 14:10And then the guy goes, no, I already dropped the chicken and
- 14:13my brother goes, oh, OK And then he calls me and he said.
- 14:18They drop the fucking chicken. They're gonna serve us chicken
- 14:21from the floor. I love it.
- 14:26I was like, no, no, Jaden. I mean, they dropped it in the
- 14:31oil. It's because.
- 14:32It's in the product. He's like.
- 14:34Oh well, this is disgusting. He also didn't trust it because
- 14:40they were playing, they were gambling and.
- 14:43There's a gambling, uh, like, you know, slot those little
- 14:46computer ones. You know, Oh yeah, the legal
- 14:48ones, the legal ones. And he's like, there's
- 14:51cigarettes on the floor, Some guy's playing fucking something
- 14:54on the casino. He's like, this is horrible.
- 14:58At the at the chicken spot. Yeah, it's like a convenience
- 15:01store chicken spot. I bet you they had a tan.
- 15:04In bed too, they. Did.
- 15:06Probably They did. Probably dead they did.
- 15:08And that's why he was like, why am I here?
- 15:10He was, like, freaking out. He was supposed to go to church
- 15:13chicken, church chickens really like 2 buildings down.
- 15:16Yeah, he said. I thought orange and I thought
- 15:18this was church chicken. Wow.
- 15:22Yeah. So between Chicken Hut, Oklahoma
- 15:26shaking the hands of chicken farmers, what music did you grow
- 15:31up listening to? Because, you know, we haven't
- 15:33really introduced the fact that you're an artist too.
- 15:36Yeah, well, so my dad is a Southern Baptist preacher and my
- 15:43mom was the piano player. So I grew up in church listening
- 15:49to Southern gospel music that they loved.
- 15:54And they were like, well, it's just like country now.
- 15:55It's not. But anyway, and and I didn't
- 15:58mind most of it, you know, but that's yeah, I.
- 16:02I had a pretty strict upbringing, you know, in
- 16:05southeast Oklahoma, everybody listens to country and it's
- 16:08still the largest genre. And a lot of people don't
- 16:11realize that, like you're in Wichita and you're in Wichita.
- 16:14And they they say, oh, you can't.
- 16:15They they barely book country bands anywhere in this town.
- 16:19And you know, when I said I wanted to start a country band
- 16:21and they're like, oh, you're never going to play in Old Town,
- 16:23I'm like, that's fine with me. I don't need to play in Old
- 16:26Town. But it's interesting because it
- 16:30is the largest genre. But no bars want country music,
- 16:36which is odd. But yeah, so I I grew up
- 16:39listening to all kinds. I've gravitated towards kind of
- 16:43Hard Rock when I was in high school.
- 16:45You know, the Big Hair Bands and you know, Metallica and Megadeth
- 16:50and Slayer, Anthrax, you know, listen to some of that stuff.
- 16:56But then. Back to country, I actually did
- 16:59two Christian albums years ago and I toured with or didn't tour
- 17:03with, but I played with a pretty well known Christian artist.
- 17:05And yeah, so but never did a bar band until I think we started 7
- 17:14about seven years ago. Oh Dang, yeah, seven years ago.
- 17:18So well into your adulthood. Yeah, well into my 40s, yeah.
- 17:24What made you? Well, then, I'm well now into my
- 17:2740s. Yeah, yeah, but like, what made
- 17:29you make that change later in life?
- 17:32So, you know, I was when you have little kids, it's hard to
- 17:40be out playing the weekends and late at night, and so I just
- 17:45never did it. And then yeah, they got they got
- 17:49older and I was at what's the, the little little bar just South
- 17:55of Kellogg. Rack them up about 7-8 years ago
- 18:02And a buddy of mine from, well, Dan Luce, he's a musician in
- 18:07town. He did a an acoustic jam there
- 18:10and he he was like, hey, come out you know so.
- 18:12I've gone out there a couple of times and I got up on stage and
- 18:15was you know playing some acoustic stuff and this older
- 18:18guy said, hey, can I join you as a bass player?
- 18:22And and so he came up, joined, pulled me outside after we
- 18:26played and said hey, do you have a band?
- 18:28And I was like now and he goes, you need a band.
- 18:30Hey, he pulled a Freddie Mercury on you.
- 18:32Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:34So he he he was playing in the David Holland band at the time
- 18:38and so bass players Perry overstake.
- 18:42And just one of the best people in the world and and one of the
- 18:47best bass players I've ever played with.
- 18:50And you know he's a Kansas Music Hall of Famer and you know just
- 18:54really, really good guy. And you know when he, when he
- 18:57said he would play in a band with me, I was like okay and it
- 19:02took a little bit to you know. Figure things out and who you
- 19:05know. Who else do we have to play?
- 19:07And I did, volunteering at Oxford Senior living for
- 19:11Dementia and Alzheimer patients in.
- 19:14Oxford, KS. Or Oxford senior living.
- 19:16It's no here in Wichita it's a chain they they specialize in
- 19:21memory care and and so I was volunteering to go and just play
- 19:26music which is a really, really cool thing because you know
- 19:30these people can't. Remember family members names or
- 19:35you know things, but when you sing an old song, like if you
- 19:37pulled out a old Elvis song and started singing, they just they
- 19:42just lighten up. Yeah, I hear that like music for
- 19:44dementia patients and or anyone with memory loss is really,
- 19:47really helpful. Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:49So it was I love doing that and I the the lady that booked me to
- 19:53do that, I was at the one in Derby at the time and she pulled
- 19:58me aside one day and goes, you need to meet my husband.
- 20:00He's a. Electric guitar player and it
- 20:04just happened to be like, I don't know, a few weeks after I
- 20:09had met Perry and yeah, the rest is history.
- 20:14The electric player had a a drummer from a band that had
- 20:19just broken up that he had subbed for a few times and he
- 20:23was like, well, I think he's, he's going to be looking and you
- 20:26know, so when we started we had a, I don't know night.
- 20:31He was 19, The drummer. I was 40.
- 20:35I think my my guitar player was in his 50s and my bass player
- 20:40was in his 60s. So we had, yeah, so we had four
- 20:46generations. That's so cool.
- 20:48Which which honestly I think has been what made what has made the
- 20:53now since the bass or the drummer has left and we have a
- 20:57different drummer now but. I think that's what's made the
- 21:01band so cool is that we have we have experience and influences
- 21:08from. All different generations.
- 21:10A lot of, a lot of, well, not not only generations, but genres
- 21:14because so Perry is a, you know, country now and has been for the
- 21:19last several years. But he was, he was a rocker in
- 21:21the 70s, you know. And so, yeah, yeah, he had some.
- 21:25Very big hair back in the day, huh?
- 21:27Long haired. Yeah, so so yeah, we do.
- 21:32You know, when I started the band, I I wanted to, you know,
- 21:36one complaint I guess I have about cover bands is that if you
- 21:40go listen to a cover band and and this isn't just Wichita,
- 21:44this is anywhere you can go listen to 10 cover bands and
- 21:48their set lists are going to overlap by 75%.
- 21:52It's like all the same songs, just a different band playing.
- 21:56And I didn't want to get into that.
- 21:58You know, I I wanted to play what I like.
- 22:01And, you know, what I like isn't necessarily dance music.
- 22:06And so, you know, I was told I wasn't going to get booked.
- 22:09And I said, well, you know, we'll see.
- 22:12I'm doing it for a fine. It's not.
- 22:14I'm not trying to make a living from it.
- 22:15So I'm going to play what I want to play.
- 22:17Yeah. And it's going to be good.
- 22:19And if, if, if they don't want to book us, then they won't book
- 22:22us, but somebody will. And so I yeah, so I just learned
- 22:26in and I've told bar owners that say, hey, you know, we we want
- 22:29somebody to, you know, load up the dance floor.
- 22:31Well, the reason they want to load a dance floor up is because
- 22:33people drink more and they stay around.
- 22:37And I, you know, I'm pretty honest with them.
- 22:39I'm not going to load up a dance floor, but people aren't going
- 22:42to leave. You know, I mean, I we don't.
- 22:46They might, but we don't usually have a problem with people
- 22:50leaving. So you know, it's.
- 22:54It's accomplishing the same thing.
- 22:55You can go and you can listen to a good variety of a lot of
- 22:58different music and yeah, that's what we do.
- 23:01Yeah. So, so elaborate a little bit.
- 23:04I mean, you you honestly like you're leading this whole.
- 23:07This whole interview. On it, Yeah, I kind.
- 23:09Of which is awesome. I mean, this is your episode.
- 23:11Yeah, yeah, We love when that happens.
- 23:13We love it. I'm like over here like, OK.
- 23:16I'm like in all Like damn. But would you, We were gonna ask
- 23:23about your setlist, We were gonna ask like, which country
- 23:26songs you choose to cover? What are the factors you
- 23:28consider? So can you elaborate a little
- 23:30bit more on that? Yeah, I mean, I I.
- 23:35Tend to, you know, if I'm going to sing along to a song in the
- 23:38car when I'm driving down the road or in the shower or
- 23:41whatever, it's a song that I like to listen to.
- 23:44And that's one I want to play. You know, I mean it's just
- 23:47that's the way it is. I we on our set list, we have
- 23:54Johnny Cash. We have Waylon Jennings, we have
- 23:57Willie Nelson, George Jones, we have Brooks and Dunn, George
- 24:02Strait. Jelly Roll.
- 24:04I love George Strait. Yeah, we have Jelly Roll, Stevie
- 24:08Wonder, Prince, all of it. I mean, when you go hear us,
- 24:14you're going to hear mostly country, but you're going to
- 24:18hear a lot of other stuff, too. You might hear some Guns and
- 24:22Roses. You might hear Prince.
- 24:24You might hear who's the other one?
- 24:27Jelly roll post Malone. Oh what?
- 24:32That's cool. Yeah.
- 24:32So I mean we it's it's a the the probably the biggest compliment
- 24:36that I get, the most frequent compliment that I get is they
- 24:41love the set list because they they go when they hear stuff
- 24:45that they didn't expect to hear. You know like they think oh it's
- 24:50a country band and you immediately know I've seen
- 24:53country bands before and so I know what songs are going to
- 24:56play because they all. Play 70, you know, they cross
- 24:59over 75% set list, yeah. And then they hear us and it's
- 25:05different. Yeah.
- 25:08Would you say a lot of SO is it mostly you or is it the whole
- 25:11band that is contributing to the set list or how do you guys
- 25:14pick? Yeah, no, they.
- 25:17So the other cool thing about our band is that everyone sings
- 25:22so. I I'm the main singer and I, you
- 25:26know, I probably sing 7580% but everyone takes a song or two or
- 25:34three and does the lead on it. So the drummer sings and you
- 25:40know they you know, I I like we're playing a gig Saturday
- 25:45night private party and you know the guy he likes rock but.
- 25:50I'm his buddy. And so we're playing for his
- 25:52party. Yeah.
- 25:53So we add some rock songs. I send out a text to the group
- 25:56and say, hey, any rock songs you guys want to sing?
- 25:59Yeah. Let.
- 26:01Me know we throw it on. Yeah, yeah.
- 26:03I mean, it's definitely a it's a group, group effort, but if I
- 26:09want to do a song, we do it. Yeah.
- 26:12And so you were saying again like you were like, we may not
- 26:14fill up the dance floor, but people are not.
- 26:17Going to leave and that goes back to the set.
- 26:19Listen. Or like tell us a little bit
- 26:21more about that too. Well, I think it's.
- 26:23What experience do you create for the crowd?
- 26:25I'm I'm not a I I wouldn't consider myself an entertainer
- 26:29but we it's a really good band like it's it's a really good
- 26:35group of people. It's a solid band it's there's a
- 26:39lot of yeah there's just there's a lot of you know I kind of I
- 26:44think about it as a as a. A really good movie.
- 26:48So this is the what I don't like about a lot of cover bands is
- 26:52that they they keep you at a high level all night.
- 26:57So the dance floors hop in. It's very electric.
- 27:00It's very upbeat. That's cool.
- 27:03But the best movies ever written, you laughed, you cried,
- 27:06you got scared, you you you experienced all of those
- 27:10emotions. And so I I look at music the
- 27:14same. The set list the same.
- 27:17And a lot of people tell me, well, you do too much slow
- 27:19stuff. Well, I mean, yeah, people don't
- 27:22leave. Yeah, yeah.
- 27:24You're trying to get, yeah, you're trying to get the whole
- 27:26vibe. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:27So I mean that. And that's kind of how I that's
- 27:29how I approach it, you know? Like I want a sad song of a
- 27:34happy song, a party song, you know?
- 27:38And and more than anything, I think that.
- 27:42The most important thing is that we do songs that we personally
- 27:47enjoy and love. Because if you don't and you can
- 27:50tell, so you can tell the bands, you can tell the bands, the
- 27:53singers, particularly from a singer, You can tell if they
- 27:57like, don't love the song. They're just doing it because
- 28:00that's what people go to the dance floor for and there's
- 28:02there's no emotion or feeling or anything in it.
- 28:06And so I yeah, if it makes me feel something when I hear it,
- 28:09then. Yeah, like when Son of a Sinner
- 28:11Jelly Roll came out before it was on the radio, I just heard
- 28:15it on, you know, iTunes or something.
- 28:17And I was like, I was like, man, I I think I had that thing on
- 28:22repeat for weeks and then I don't know what, why it took me
- 28:28so long to go, ooh, I want to do that song.
- 28:31But for some reason, I think just because it wasn't a
- 28:33typical, you know, it's like what we would play.
- 28:36But yeah, that's how I that's how I choose the music.
- 28:41Nice it. It really actually reminds me of
- 28:44a lot of my own DJ ING actually. Everything you've been saying.
- 28:48Like, I don't. I don't go out and play the Old
- 28:51Town clubs and stuff because that's not music.
- 28:54I generally enjoy listening to all time and I enjoy playing
- 28:58what I want to play and I'm not worried about getting booked
- 29:02because I get booked. Yeah, I don't have to try for
- 29:05it. It just comes to me and they
- 29:06want me to come play what I want to play.
- 29:08It's great. As far and and I can attest to
- 29:12having personally enjoyed some of your performances and stuff
- 29:16like yeah, people don't leave because you're taking them kind
- 29:19of on that kind of roller coaster journey throughout the
- 29:21night. And even on those like softer,
- 29:26more low energy songs, that's a chance for people to chit, chat
- 29:31and hang out. That's why they don't leave,
- 29:33because you're trying to keep that.
- 29:36Energy up at 100 all night. It's Yeah, everyone's gonna get
- 29:38tired. Like, you can't have a
- 29:40conversation. And sometimes, like, you just
- 29:42have a you always have a mix of a crowd.
- 29:43Yeah, Yeah. Like you have the crowd that
- 29:45wants to go and dance. More like you also have the
- 29:47crowd. Always.
- 29:48Please anybody. Oh, no.
- 29:50Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 29:51No. Like I've had bar owners I won't
- 29:53name out the bar. We're not gonna do that today,
- 29:55but. I mean you've heard if you want
- 29:56another shot and. Everything.
- 29:58There is one in town. They said, hey, we want to try
- 30:00something different, you know, come out, they're they're pretty
- 30:03known for. Jazz and Blues and hip hop and
- 30:08and you know, kind of not, definitely not country and and
- 30:13probably not even rock'n'roll or anything.
- 30:15But they're like we we're trying to, you know reach a another
- 30:19crowd and let's see if we can see if we can do that.
- 30:23And so I get out there and get done with my first set and the
- 30:26bar owners like, hey, can you play something different?
- 30:30Like, no. I'm a country man.
- 30:32I mean that. That.
- 30:34And you knew that. Yeah, yeah, you knew that.
- 30:36And we brought in 40 people that wouldn't have been here
- 30:38otherwise. That is true, you know?
- 30:39Yeah. So they know who you guys are.
- 30:41Yeah. Yeah.
- 30:42So I mean it it's it's a it can be it can be a little hard to
- 30:49deal with sometimes you know to kind of get through that
- 30:52barrier. But I, you know, I just think if
- 30:56you play and you kind of stick to.
- 30:59What you love. And don't get me wrong, there's
- 31:01a few songs that we've done that I'm like, I probably wouldn't
- 31:05have picked them, but, you know, maybe the the band guys really
- 31:08love it. And you know, I enjoy.
- 31:11I don't play anything that I don't enjoy playing, you know?
- 31:14But there there's some songs that I probably wouldn't have
- 31:17gone ooh, let's do that song. But you know, the lead guitar
- 31:21player, Jan or, you know, Todd or somebody was like, hey, we
- 31:24should do this, Okay. Great.
- 31:26Yeah, so since like you guys are just basically, you know,
- 31:30country do, country music and everything, how do you stay
- 31:34balanced and true to what like original, like original country
- 31:39music sounds and how do you add your own, like little taste on
- 31:43those cover songs? Yeah, so I particularly on the
- 31:48old country stuff, I I usually just tell them to not pay
- 31:54attention to the recording. Just play it like we want to
- 31:58update the sound, you know. And so, and I did that at
- 32:03church. I led a church band for 10
- 32:04years. And so, you know, the thing that
- 32:07people don't realize that aren't, aren't musicians, have
- 32:10never been in a studio and all you've done is listen to the
- 32:12radio. You don't realize that there's
- 32:15eight guitar parts on this song or there's a string section or
- 32:19there, you know, there's 80 instruments.
- 32:22So, you know, I've done albums and I've got, I've got songs
- 32:25that have, you know. 20 instruments on it.
- 32:28We can't duplicate that on stage with a four, five piece band.
- 32:32Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so and when you try it
- 32:36doesn't sound right and so you'll hear it.
- 32:39You can always tell a cover band that's trying to mimic.
- 32:43That sound. Mimic the radio sound, yeah.
- 32:46And and the the song just doesn't sound right.
- 32:50But then there's the other people are like, well, this is
- 32:52the way it was recorded or this is the guitar part.
- 32:54That's exactly how you have to play it.
- 32:56I'm like, yeah, but there's four guitar parts all playing at the
- 32:59same time. Which one do you want to play?
- 33:01So for me, it's better to go, you know, pretend like you're
- 33:05sitting down at a campfire and you just want to start playing a
- 33:07song, you know, and and play to your ability, you know, play.
- 33:13Just make it your own and. And you know the the great
- 33:17thing, I get the pleasure of playing with really, really good
- 33:21musicians. I mean the I'm the worst
- 33:23musician on the stage. So it I mean it's it's a great
- 33:28thing you know. And I can throw out a song last
- 33:30minute. We we hardly ever rehearse
- 33:32anymore. I text a song I say listen to
- 33:34it. We're doing it in this key and
- 33:37then we we do it. Um, yeah.
- 33:39We might start it and stop it during a sound check or
- 33:42something, you know, just to make sure that we're, we know
- 33:44how to, yeah, start and end it, but yeah.
- 33:47So. I love that, though.
- 33:49That sounds that sounds like you're surrounded by a lot of
- 33:51talented people. Very.
- 33:53And then you guys like work each other very like you basically
- 33:56know what's good for all of us. Yeah, you know everybody knows
- 34:00how you work or what you like to listen, how you what kind of
- 34:04music and. Know what they like and
- 34:07everything. Yeah, I mean, I think we
- 34:10compliment each other really well.
- 34:12And when you've played with them, a group of guys for that
- 34:16long, it just kind of comes together like you almost know
- 34:23what move they're gonna make or, you know, whatever.
- 34:27It's. Yeah, it gets typed quickly.
- 34:31Yeah. I guess when we do a new song,
- 34:34it doesn't just come together like glue the first time we do
- 34:39it. But it doesn't take long, yeah.
- 34:44Yeah, share some challenges that you have gone through too as
- 34:47well. Music wise.
- 34:50Are you talking? About music country.
- 34:52Yeah, Or I guess, girlfriend wise.
- 34:55Although it sounds like she's kind of perfect.
- 34:57She is. Just like challenges you face as
- 35:01a country music band. Well, I mean, I think the
- 35:03biggest challenges is people don't want to book it.
- 35:06You know, like they. There's a lot of country bands
- 35:13that I've heard that sound kind of hokey.
- 35:17I don't know. Yeah.
- 35:19Honky Tonk and I and not Yeah, yeah.
- 35:24So and. And I I have friends that play
- 35:27in honky tonk bands and that's that's a particular sound and
- 35:30they they you know they have an audience for that.
- 35:33I I don't like that. I don't like.
- 35:36I mean I like some honky tonk but you know the the red dirt
- 35:41country stuff that's coming out of Texas now is.
- 35:45It's almost, it's like a real edgy honky tonk music and it's
- 35:50really cool. It's like they updated this.
- 35:52They're using the same sounds and stuff, but they added
- 35:55another layer of kind of updated sounds and it.
- 35:58Yeah, I listened to one song. I can't remember it, but it has
- 36:04some honky tonk kind of. Like theme or sound but they
- 36:08have updated the B and like yeah so.
- 36:11For like your ignorant crowd like, elaborate more on that.
- 36:14What on Honky tonk? Or the red Dirt Honky.
- 36:18Well, so the honky tonk stuff is steel guitar and banjo and and a
- 36:29lot of it's, I think a lot of what's updated the sound is the
- 36:33vocalist. Because they're not singing with
- 36:36a real deep Southern twang, you know, they So I think it just
- 36:44automatically kind of makes the song sound updated because
- 36:48they're not, you know, But it's it's really just a matter, I
- 36:51think it's the instrumentation, the style of playing, you know,
- 36:55I mean they're you're going to have like, I don't know,
- 36:58accordions and you know. Juice harps and spoons and yeah,
- 37:03I mean, you start talking about like the bluegrass genre and.
- 37:07Yeah, I've I've tried listening to like, the bluegrass genre,
- 37:11but I don't know if I could like really get into it sometimes.
- 37:15But there's some songs I do like, but I just don't know how
- 37:17I feel about it for a little. Bit I'm kind of that way too.
- 37:20I'm not. I mean, I hear it like there's a
- 37:22lot of genres that are not just not for me.
- 37:25Like yeah, yeah, like I love. Blues and I love jazz, but I
- 37:30love it for five songs. You know, I can't go listen for
- 37:33two hours or you know that. I can't remember the name of
- 37:36group. There was a cover group that
- 37:38came out that was a bluegrass group and they would take like a
- 37:42Dave Matthews album and redo it in all bluegrass.
- 37:48And it was so cool. Like it was so cool to to
- 37:51listen, you know. And so they were kind of known
- 37:54for Okay. Let's take.
- 37:56Whoever's hot right now in pop. Music it's like a rap like tried
- 37:59to make a country move but make out of a rap song.
- 38:02Yeah. And that's a whole nother genre
- 38:04now too because there's the the country rap stuff.
- 38:07So they, I don't know if they call it like California country.
- 38:11Some people call it that. Or like the they'll outlaw
- 38:14country. The Yeah, but you you've got
- 38:17people like Jelly Roll. I I'm not.
- 38:20I don't. I'm horrible with names but
- 38:22there's a lot of of those out there now.
- 38:24Moonshine bandits. They play at the Wave some and
- 38:27they're. That was my first experience of
- 38:29going and hearing a live like country rap.
- 38:33And it I mean it was. It was really cool, you know?
- 38:37So which actually that's how I got turned onto Jelly Roll
- 38:40because I was listening to Moonshine Bandits on Spotify.
- 38:43And then I'm like, yeah, and then you start getting all these
- 38:46suggestions and then I started listening to this.
- 38:48But a lot of the true country people don't.
- 38:53They don't like the country rap. They don't like what they call
- 38:57the bro country, which is like your kind of pop country, you
- 39:01know? I mean, and I'm.
- 39:02I like it. I just like music.
- 39:04Me too. Yeah, I like every type of
- 39:06music. I mean, like your screamo music.
- 39:09I know. Like I'm probably like 3 songs.
- 39:12Don't lie. No, for real.
- 39:13I just only know 3. What is it?
- 39:15Did you say screamo? Yeah, she said.
- 39:18She looked at me and said that. I don't know what that.
- 39:21Is I would oh they just screaming.
- 39:23Oh yeah. I mean.
- 39:29We I will go to like back to our hometown with her.
- 39:32Sometimes she play her music. She's like, is this OK?
- 39:35I was like, I'm just gonna go sleep, but you can play whatever
- 39:37you want. So it sounds like you can sleep
- 39:39to it I. Was gonna say you.
- 39:40Can it sounds like you could sleep to?
- 39:41It I mean, I can sleep through a true life.
- 39:44A a true was a true kind. Of Podcast Podcast.
- 39:47I'll go sleep to it. I know it's crazy.
- 39:50That's that's nothing there's lulling you to sleep with.
- 39:53Never. Yeah, exactly.
- 39:55Well, they have your voice. You know, so like, it sounds
- 39:58just like soothing you just want to sleep to?
- 40:01It and then found Fanny on the floor.
- 40:06And then she karate chopped to them.
- 40:10From the floor. Yeah, from the floor.
- 40:14It's a story. It doesn't have to be real.
- 40:18I I listen to the unsolved ones, I'll be sleeping.
- 40:21I'm like, oh, they they still haven't found them, OK.
- 40:24There's still out here. There's still out here.
- 40:26It's alright. I have my alarm on.
- 40:29Yeah, if the show is called Disappearances, that means they
- 40:31haven't been found. It's yeah, yeah, Or, you know,
- 40:34Unsolved Mysteries. That's not mysteries.
- 40:36Yeah, yeah. It's like we should pay
- 40:38attention to that before we start watching it.
- 40:40Yeah, but you're like, you're still waiting for it to find out
- 40:42what happened. You're like, Oh yeah.
- 40:44Yeah, we don't know. Yeah.
- 40:46So it's like, damn, you stick like now we're never gonna know.
- 40:50Yes, but that's also like when you get really reeled into the
- 40:52story, You know, like that you forget.
- 40:55Because you wanna know what happens, yeah?
- 40:57Yeah, and then you forget. I'm never gonna know what.
- 40:59Happened my my favorite podcast, True crime is Serial Killers.
- 41:05Yeah, you did. It was funny.
- 41:07That one's a good one because they also like.
- 41:10We'll go into like the psychology.
- 41:12Yes, they're like we're not psychologists, but we've done
- 41:14massive research and we're like, so.
- 41:17Yeah, she always says that. I love when she says that.
- 41:19She's like, I'm not a psychologist, but.
- 41:22But yeah. With that, I think it's time for
- 41:24us to take a quick break and we'll be right back with the

- 42:59We just had the drinks kind of made-up.
- 43:01Emily, what'd you make for us today?
- 43:02Well, guys, I made a ready, ready.
- 43:06Fuck. We're feeling it.
- 43:10I made a Red Dirty Bastard. Now why is a Red?
- 43:15Wait, wait, wait. What'd you make again?
- 43:16A Red Dirty Bastard. RDB.
- 43:20Dirty, Dirty Dan. Well, anyways, guys, so.
- 43:26As you know, I am. I got my degree from Amateur
- 43:30Bartender School. Amateur University.
- 43:33Amateur university. I'm sorry, I had a full ride.
- 43:36There it was. She did.
- 43:37She really did. She got a full ride.
- 43:38Yeah, she she got recruited at one of the bars.
- 43:42They said that if you don't pass your classes, you won't make it.
- 43:47I went. I passed with flying colors.
- 43:50Because I took every shot. I took every shot.
- 43:54Every shot that was presented, I every shot was.
- 43:55Presented. I took all the extra credit.
- 43:58Everything, you know, they were like, hey, we're going to mix
- 44:00this to tequila and whiskey, you know, it's like.
- 44:03I'll fucking take it. Opportunity obsession.
- 44:06I hope that everybody heard that Emily really is a go getter.
- 44:09Oh, I told you guys. What would life been like if you
- 44:13had not responded to that Craigslist?
- 44:17For that. Bartending school.
- 44:18You know, that Craigslist ass came up on an ad at Facebook
- 44:22market And I was like, this sounds really legit, like, I'm
- 44:24gonna do it. I told my parents I was like,
- 44:27you know, I'm Asian and I know you want me to be a doctor or a
- 44:30lawyer, but I'm gonna fucking go to this amateur school.
- 44:34Cool. It's well, it also offered the
- 44:36doctorate program. Exactly, yeah.
- 44:38And so I do. So she also knows how to treat
- 44:41people with alcohol. Yeah, yeah, that's true.
- 44:44I'll just, I'll just pour, you know, fucking, you know, vodka
- 44:47down that wound of yours, if you need that.
- 44:49Or red dirty. Aka, that wound is your heart,
- 44:52so I'm gonna help you you. Know what?
- 44:54I've done that before. Did it work?
- 44:56Vodka on a wound, yeah. Yeah.
- 44:58Yeah, then. When they made it to the minor
- 45:01yard or whatever they nurse was like, yeah, it's better than
- 45:04nothing, I guess. And that's how Emily graduated.
- 45:10That is, that's the graduation. That's 1995 you spent.
- 45:15That is true. That is true.
- 45:16Stage. It was a virtual stage, but she
- 45:18did. It.
- 45:19I was valedictorian guys. She was.
- 45:21She gave a whole. Speech.
- 45:22Whole ass speech. On zoom.
- 45:24Took all. She took all the shots.
- 45:26She did not. She didn't.
- 45:28Miss. She might miss.
- 45:29I was. I was.
- 45:30What's it call? I was a goat.
- 45:32I was a 4.0 student, guys. She was the goat.
- 45:34She has a goat. But anyways, so to make this
- 45:37ready dirt bass. Ready.
- 45:38Fuck. Red.
- 45:40Red. Dirty Bastard.
- 45:44So you guys, you know, on our last episode we had Moscow when
- 45:48with Adrian. So I decided like, maybe I
- 45:52should do Moscow again. She gave her another.
- 45:55Shot I gave another shot you know cuz you know I am that go
- 45:58getter anyway so So what you do is you have some, you have your
- 46:03moscal and then you have any type of tequila so they is
- 46:06preferred to have rest. Podado, shreposado.
- 46:10Yeah, something like that. Yes, Desposito.
- 46:17So. You, Torito.
- 46:18You put at least like 1.5 ounces of mascal, and then you put half
- 46:24a ounce of your tequila. Then you have as your old
- 46:30fashions. You always have bitters.
- 46:31So you know, I decided to do a little.
- 46:34Little spicy kind of thing, you know?
- 46:36So we got two bitters here. We have an orange, bitter and
- 46:40well, how you say this word again, I think.
- 46:41It was our aromatic. Aromatic bitters, yes.
- 46:44So you put two dashes of each bitters.
- 46:47Then you put at least just like a tablespoon of your agave
- 46:50syrup. Stir it together over ice.
- 46:54Once you stir it, you pour over your.
- 46:56Bigger eyes, Your rounder eyes, rounder eyes, and then.
- 47:02Don't get a shape in there. Yes.
- 47:04Don't forget your orange peel as well, guys, because you know
- 47:06fruit, you got a balance life. You know you got a peel and you
- 47:09got your fruit, so you got to balance it.
- 47:11Yeah. So you just rim put your orange
- 47:14peel on the rim, then you just squeeze it because there's
- 47:18technically juice and the orange peel or whatever it is.
- 47:23You know when you watch a video of it, you see all this mist and
- 47:25you're like, and you do it and you're like, what the fuck is
- 47:27the mist at? It's no different than when you
- 47:30flush a toilet. Something happens.
- 47:32Yeah, you don't see it. You really don't see it.
- 47:35I have literally told everyone about them, like that's why we
- 47:38close the lid to the toilet when we flush.
- 47:40I told them I show them a video. I'm like, This is why you don't
- 47:43do that. Yeah, Anybody.
- 47:44No, But guys are just in there taking their drink with them.
- 47:47Oh, and they leave it on top of the fucking on on top of it.
- 47:50Yep. They're like, no, it's just
- 47:52fine. It's far.
- 47:52It's far. From from my drink.
- 47:54Well, they got some more. Taste buds in there, that is
- 47:56true. But you guys, I've made this
- 47:58drink special for our guest. You know, I always make a
- 48:01special guest. I always make a special drink
- 48:04for our guest. And Jared, this is basically for
- 48:07you because it's a red dirty bastard.
- 48:11Emily, you are the Haw to my Yee.
- 48:15That is correct. Yee Haw.
- 48:22Okay, Enough about me guys. I love talking about myself.
- 48:25But today, you know, let's talk about somebody.
- 48:27Else. So Jared, why did we go with
- 48:30whiskey or tequila? What happened there?
- 48:33Why is this your drink of choice?
- 48:36I just like it. I mean, I yeah, I mean, I drink
- 48:41bourbon or tequila usually. And so I love the fact that she
- 48:45went with a Old Fashioned. Tequila based, yeah.
- 48:50So awesome. So what'd you think of the
- 48:51drink? So, everybody.
- 48:52Near you. Very, very good.
- 48:53Yeah. Very, very good.
- 48:54Yes. I heard there's a like a ramen
- 48:57place that needs a good bartender.
- 48:59Yeah, like I already. I already work three jobs.
- 49:04I work 3 jobs already. I don't think I could like, you
- 49:07know, I don't think I have patience for that.
- 49:11Like we want something. This I was like, well, I don't
- 49:13give a fuck. I'm making this, I'm making this
- 49:16and you drink it, OK? Like.
- 49:17Your personality. You need this shot so you can
- 49:20shut the fuck. Up I'll be like there's a tree
- 49:22outside. Go.
- 49:23Touch that tree, leave whatever your attitudes at and come back
- 49:26and you can pick it up after you leave there.
- 49:28You. Go anyway.
- 49:33So let's talk about you real quick.
- 49:37What's your plans for the future?
- 49:39Oh, I don't. I don't plan.
- 49:41Yeah, I just. Yeah, I don't plan things.
- 49:44Yeah. I mean like.
- 49:46No, go ahead. No, go ahead, you go ahead.
- 49:48No, I just, I kind of do. I kind of just roll with it and
- 49:54we've been playing a lot more. I think we had eight or nine
- 50:00gigs in June, Dang. And this is just a side gig for
- 50:05everybody. Do you have a full time job?
- 50:08I do. Well, no, no.
- 50:10I mean, so I've been in agriculture and tech.
- 50:14Tech for several years and I I kind of hop around startups.
- 50:18So I've been with 10 different ag tech startups.
- 50:21And I I was working for a company out of Croatia that was
- 50:25a farm management software company and they unexpectedly
- 50:30let the US team go about 10 months ago.
- 50:33And so I've been working as an advisor for two different
- 50:38startups and haven't had a paycheck in 10 months.
- 50:40So yeah, just get in stock. Yeah, that's awesome.
- 50:44Hey, I heard that's the best way to go.
- 50:46But it could be if it ever comes to anything, I could.
- 50:48I could. I could make $1,000,000 or $10
- 50:52million, or I could make nothing.
- 50:53Yeah, I had a director and he all he did was talk about stocks
- 50:58and he how much he he bought. He's like he wakes up at 5:00
- 51:01o'clock in the morning or I think at 4:00 o'clock in the
- 51:02morning. He just reads everything and
- 51:04sees everything. He's like I I just bought this
- 51:07today. I just bought this stock today
- 51:09and I'm like. What time you wake up?
- 51:11He's like, I'm like up like at 3:00 o'clock in the morning.
- 51:13And I'm like, oh, OK, he's like rich, don't sleep.
- 51:18Well, yeah, I mean all the all the very wealthy people is like,
- 51:21you have to figure out how to make money when you're sleeping.
- 51:23Yeah, exactly. Yeah, so that's.
- 51:25That's a good. Rule of thumb, I haven't figured
- 51:27it out yet, but I mean, it is time to get a job.
- 51:29I've been looking, but it's time to start collecting a paycheck.
- 51:32But that, hey, the music's paid. You know it's it.
- 51:36You do what you. Love and and and I.
- 51:40You know, I flip houses on the side too.
- 51:42And so I have three jobs too, Emily.
- 51:46I want none. We all got our hands in
- 51:50different cookie jars, yeah. Fuck, I want none.
- 51:55I want to live that bum ass life.
- 51:58I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding.
- 52:00But. Do you have any projects coming
- 52:03up soon that we be aware of? Well, so, no, not really.
- 52:07But we are so my bass player Perry, he wants to play Red
- 52:12Rock. Red Rock Canyon.
- 52:15Red rocks and. Not the restaurant.
- 52:19Amphitheater. Yeah.
- 52:21Ooh, that'd be good. So we So, you know, I've never
- 52:25really considered doing music full time.
- 52:27I had the opportunity in my younger years and I.
- 52:31I didn't. I should have.
- 52:32I didn't. But few weeks ago his lifelong
- 52:38friend was like, hey, Perry wants to play red Rock.
- 52:42I'm like, you know, Perry's 70 and he's, he's a badass based
- 52:46player, you know, just a cool dude and just a great human
- 52:51being. And I got to thinking about it
- 52:53and I was like, you know what I mean?
- 52:54There's plenty of people that have played red Rock that, you
- 52:58know, nobody knew. Three years ago.
- 53:01Oh, that is true, yeah. So I sent a text out to the
- 53:04band. I said, hey, you know, Perry
- 53:06wants to play Red Rock. Only one problem.
- 53:07We have to write because we're not going to go be a cover band
- 53:11playing at Red Rock. And we, I have originals.
- 53:13I mean, I have, you know, a handful.
- 53:16Well, I put out two Christian albums.
- 53:18I have maybe 1/2 of an album for country, but it was all recorded
- 53:24before the band was formed. And so I really haven't written.
- 53:30In a while. So, so, so the plan is, is that
- 53:33we're meeting every other Tuesday night.
- 53:35We're do we're riding and Perry wants to play Red Rock.
- 53:38So we're going to figure it out. I I want to play, I I want to
- 53:42play Red Rock. It's a great venue.
- 53:45It's probably the place that every artist.
- 53:50Dreams of. Yeah, Dreams of playing.
- 53:53Will it happen? I don't know.
- 53:54But I I mean, I I I know one thing.
- 53:57I know that we are. Good enough to play Red Rock,
- 54:02but whether it happens or not, we'll see.
- 54:04But I I think it will and I think he deserves that.
- 54:07That's it. It kind of was like my
- 54:09challenge, like I could. I don't.
- 54:12I'm going to be fine regardless whether I play there or not.
- 54:15But for him, I mean he's he's kind of the reason this.
- 54:20Things started so. That is so awesome.
- 54:22Yeah, so maybe I'm gonna do like a go Fund me campaign or I don't
- 54:24know. I should throw the crap out of
- 54:26you. I'm not doing a Go Fund Me
- 54:27campaign. That was a joke.
- 54:28I don't. I don't do that.
- 54:29Well, you could share this episode.
- 54:31Yes, we'll. Share the episode.
- 54:33But we do need, yeah, we need to somehow get to Red Rock.
- 54:35So if there's anybody we can open up for, yeah.
- 54:39So. That's freaking.
- 54:40So tell us a little bit about the writing process and like,
- 54:44you guys are not original writers, but you have created
- 54:47some original songs. Yeah, I've got.
- 54:49So tell us about how. 30 or 40 maybe?
- 54:5150 Okay Yeah. So like, maybe is there a
- 54:54difference between when you start writing just solo?
- 54:57By yourself and then now that you're adding the rest of the.
- 55:00Group, I mean I've written for other, I've written with friends
- 55:03before but usually I have about 75% of the song done and it's
- 55:06like oh I need I need a tweak or whatever and we get together and
- 55:10and finish it up. So I don't know like we we had a
- 55:18we have our first one in two weeks so.
- 55:22I don't know what it's gonna go like.
- 55:24I do know that when life is miserable, you write better.
- 55:29Yeah. So I told Hazel we've got a
- 55:31break up soon. So I haven't written a song
- 55:36since we started dating. It was like, really?
- 55:38Cool. I think really helps.
- 55:40Yeah, Yeah. So we.
- 55:41Well. Heartbreak or new like I wrote,
- 55:45I think. Two or three great songs, yeah,
- 55:48for Hazel, yeah. And you can look them up.
- 55:52I mean, there's a couple of good ones and but there's something
- 55:59about writing, like you have to be in a strange place.
- 56:02Yeah. I don't know if it's a strange
- 56:03place, but. It's definitely like if things
- 56:06are really bad and you're just down and that's, I mean that's
- 56:09really, that's a great country song.
- 56:11Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 56:12Just lost my dog and my wife and my truck and or you can.
- 56:16Make a John Wick movie out of that too, right?
- 56:19But yeah, so I I mean it's been it's been tough.
- 56:22It's also a discipline though yeah.
- 56:24And and my my thing is, is that I've every song for the most
- 56:29part that I've written. And I and I've probably written
- 56:3350 or so. I'm not, not a ton, but they've
- 56:38all, they've all start to finish taking me 10 minutes like it
- 56:43comes to me. And I just.
- 56:45Yeah, 10 minutes. Like I'm I'm, you know, 10-15
- 56:48minutes. I mean, I might refine it from
- 56:50the music standpoint, but I I write with a guitar in my hand.
- 56:54So I'm I'm, I'm doing the music. And the lyrics all together?
- 56:58Yeah, yeah. And I write it, and it's usually
- 57:01a very short process. And so you switch.
- 57:05To music and set up painting it takes.
- 57:07Forever to finish up painting. Yeah, it takes you 10 minutes.
- 57:12To do that, Well, there's some people that there's some people
- 57:15that's not their process. Like there's people that have
- 57:17boxes of papers that they've got a partial and I actually have
- 57:22notes in here. That that I write in my phone
- 57:26that you know it's a song idea but but what I've learned is if
- 57:31I haven't finished that song in 15 minutes it's never gonna
- 57:34written. It's done they.
- 57:35Let it go. Yeah, I'll let it go.
- 57:37I mean I have lyrics in there thinking maybe I'll, you know, I
- 57:40I go and I read them and it might spark an idea and then and
- 57:44maybe I'll finish it. But like the the lyrics, they
- 57:47don't have a melody. They don't have anything.
- 57:49They're just words and. But yeah, I kind of give up if
- 57:54it's not. Done.
- 57:54How do you figure out the melody with the lyrics?
- 58:00I mean, I don't know. It just, yeah, I just have a
- 58:02guitar in my hand and yeah, I'm kind of tinkering.
- 58:05Around playing around, seeing what sounds good, it's kind of
- 58:09cuz I just kind of do the same thing when I make my beats and.
- 58:12Stuff like I'll just. Play around pushing buttons,
- 58:14seeing what sounds good, and then you build off of that.
- 58:18And however that kind of inspires, you kind of go from
- 58:21there. Yeah, yeah.
- 58:22And it's it's pretty much the same way.
- 58:24And like like based on what the song's about or like the mood
- 58:29I'm in when I'm writing it, it's like that kind of dictates, OK,
- 58:31what's the rhythm gonna be like? Or what's?
- 58:34The OR like how like how the lips gonna be high pitch or low
- 58:37pitch or anything like that. Yeah.
- 58:39And it, I mean it's just. It amazes me how like these like
- 58:43you as an artist, like you guys make these and dusty as well.
- 58:47You guys make these music and it's like, how do you guys put
- 58:50it together? Cuz like me, I can't, I can't do
- 58:53that. I don't know how to do that.
- 58:55But I mean, you guys have a talent like.
- 58:58I mean, yeah, I I guess it is. I I just, it's it's funny
- 59:02because I think that if I put more planning into it, sometimes
- 59:07I thought about this like OK if I plan and I force myself to go
- 59:11down in the basement and start writing like I can't sometimes I
- 59:15worry that's not going to be good.
- 59:17Like, I I feel like it's something that should just come
- 59:19to me. But then I think about all the
- 59:21great songwriters and I've I've known some really good
- 59:25songwriters that, you know, it's it's work.
- 59:29Like you they go, they plan, they sit down.
- 59:31It's a discipline. They, you know, they write daily
- 59:36and so maybe that's the way you should do it.
- 59:38That's never the way I've done it.
- 59:41But. And and I think the other thing
- 59:44is, is that I usually, as I'm writing, I've got the the
- 59:47melody, I've got the guitar part because I'm, you know, like I
- 59:50said, I have a guitar in my hand, I have a notepad,
- 59:52whatever. Sometimes I just use an audio
- 59:54file and I just start singing ideas with my guitar into the
- 59:57phone and then I write everything down.
- 1:00:00But one of the problems I think I have is that I when I do that.
- 1:00:06I've already decided what I want that song to sound like in the
- 1:00:08studio, you know? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:11So like, I have like, OK, this will be, you know, I'm thinking
- 1:00:14all it's all happening at the same time in my brain.
- 1:00:17Yeah, yeah. And I don't know that that's the
- 1:00:20best way to do it. But I mean, it's your way,
- 1:00:24right? It's so like, it's funny that
- 1:00:26you're saying that like you. It's funny how like you'll be
- 1:00:30doing it as an outlet at 1st and so you're doing it your way.
- 1:00:34And then you become, I don't want to say, serious about it,
- 1:00:36because at that point you're still serious about it, because
- 1:00:38it's still an outlet for you. And then you start to read up
- 1:00:41more on it. You start to discover the greats
- 1:00:44or meet people who are great, and you read about how they've
- 1:00:49created it in a discipline. And then you think, well, I'm
- 1:00:52not doing that. Should I be doing that?
- 1:00:54And then you try that and it's not working for you and then
- 1:00:57you're like, well, now I'm unhappy too.
- 1:01:00And then you're like, what should I do?
- 1:01:02It's so I say that or I relate to that in terms of like I paint
- 1:01:06and stuff. So a lot of that comes to that
- 1:01:10fruition too of like you're just trying to figure out what is
- 1:01:13that right balance for you. What does that mean for you and
- 1:01:16your stage in life too? And based on whatever other
- 1:01:20crazy stuff you got going on in your day-to-day, right?
- 1:01:23And what just comes naturally, right?
- 1:01:26Because at the end of the day, you want to create something
- 1:01:28that's good. Yeah, that you can.
- 1:01:31Be proud of. I think it's just like anything
- 1:01:33else, like there's I don't know that there is a right or a wrong
- 1:01:37way when it comes to art, but you can take that beyond art.
- 1:01:43Like, I I golf a lot too. And I'm a fairly new golfer.
- 1:01:47Just over the last, you know, few years.
- 1:01:50I'm trying to learn the game. And you know, it's funny.
- 1:01:52You go out and you're on the golf course and good golfers
- 1:01:56going, oh, you need to do you need to change this or you need
- 1:02:00to put your stance here or do this, that and I.
- 1:02:05But then I watch all these really good golfers that I play
- 1:02:08with and they all set up on the ball.
- 1:02:10Slightly different. They have their way.
- 1:02:13And then you've got like the number one golfer in the world
- 1:02:15right now, Scotty Scheffler, who, you know, he gets up on the
- 1:02:19tee box and when he drives, he swings the club.
- 1:02:23His back foot literally lifts off the ground and spins around
- 1:02:26completely. Should not ever happen in the
- 1:02:29game of golf. And people that saw him hit
- 1:02:32early on were like, oh, there's no way this guy's going to be a
- 1:02:35pro, but just. But look at him now.
- 1:02:38He does it his way. Like, so I think it's, you know,
- 1:02:41I think in everything in life there's certain, I think there's
- 1:02:46kind of rules, you know, that you should follow.
- 1:02:50But those are like, you know, love people, treat people the
- 1:02:53way you know you want to be treated.
- 1:02:55There's these kind of golden rules.
- 1:02:57Outside of that, I think like, I don't think there's like a rule
- 1:03:00of success for songwriting or for painting.
- 1:03:03Or. Golfing or.
- 1:03:06Like, I think it's just a discipline.
- 1:03:07Like you got to be disciplined in how you do it.
- 1:03:11But in art, you know, I think a lot of artists are lazy music
- 1:03:16and you know, whatever medium you're using, it's there's a lot
- 1:03:21of laziness in it still, but it works.
- 1:03:26Yeah, that's lazy. Yeah.
- 1:03:35I was trying to figure out where to go from that.
- 1:03:37That was that was good though, like, I mean.
- 1:03:39We can talk about politics or. Yeah, you.
- 1:03:43So. So who'd you vote for?
- 1:03:46Kidding. I don't want to know that.
- 1:03:47Please don't. It's been a great conversation.
- 1:03:49No, it it doesn't matter. I mean, like if I told you, you
- 1:03:52would kick me out and it'd be all fine.
- 1:03:54So that's the thing about, that's the thing that sucks
- 1:03:56about where we're at today in our world.
- 1:03:57Is that I you? Know it's hard to find that
- 1:04:00middle ground. Or, well, it It shouldn't even
- 1:04:02matter. You know, like I like.
- 1:04:05I I like the days when everybody had a different opinion and it
- 1:04:10was fine and you just kind of go on about your days.
- 1:04:13But you know, we we live in a society today now where you know
- 1:04:16you've got all this social media is influencing decisions and
- 1:04:20everything you. Canceled or you?
- 1:04:21Canceled and you're this and you're that and it's like, I
- 1:04:24don't like I'm. I'm a very conservative guy.
- 1:04:27Like, I I absolutely love what Trump did.
- 1:04:30I didn't love him as a president necessarily, because I didn't
- 1:04:33think he was very presidential. But like, I I love the ideas.
- 1:04:37But then you start talking about all these things like war, you
- 1:04:40know, there's all these antiwar. There's a consequence to every
- 1:04:43decision you make, you know? And like, like, no, nobody loves
- 1:04:48war. Nobody loves fighting, but there
- 1:04:51is. There is value in having a
- 1:04:52strong military. There's value in having strength
- 1:04:55and being able to show that strength.
- 1:04:56That doesn't mean we're going to go up and start blowing up
- 1:04:58everybody. It just means that in order to
- 1:05:01be secure as a society, you have to have that show of strength
- 1:05:06that's there, you know. And so it's things like that I,
- 1:05:10you know, it's. So I I remember I sent this in
- 1:05:15the group chat. There's this organization called
- 1:05:19Story Corpse and it's where you get paired with like you, you
- 1:05:24write down your your beliefs and your political beliefs as well,
- 1:05:27and you get paired with somebody who is opposite of your beliefs.
- 1:05:31And then you have an hour long conversation with that.
- 1:05:34It was really cool. So I did it right and.
- 1:05:39Unfortunately, you couldn't talk about politics.
- 1:05:42You couldn't talk about your beliefs.
- 1:05:43And then I was like, do I know? Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:05:46I was like, do I know that people are people?
- 1:05:47Do I know that they have their own experiences and that's what
- 1:05:50shaped them? Yes.
- 1:05:51I do know that. Like, I get that.
- 1:05:53Like, I want to talk about it. I thought I was going to have,
- 1:05:55like, a really good conversation with somebody on an opposing
- 1:05:59side from what I believed in or what I said by.
- 1:06:02And we could just, like, have a really good conversation about
- 1:06:04that. Did I ever believe that we were
- 1:06:06going to like. Change each other's mind.
- 1:06:07Know. Like, it was just going to be a
- 1:06:09good, informative talk, right? Because like, there's so much
- 1:06:12still. Yeah, there's still so much to
- 1:06:14learn from from obviously. Like, I hate to say it that way,
- 1:06:17but like the other side quote, UN quote.
- 1:06:21But there again, because, like, you're looking at it from two
- 1:06:23different perspectives. And yeah, I mean, like, we
- 1:06:26didn't get a chance to talk about it.
- 1:06:28That wasn't really part of what you could do.
- 1:06:29And then it was like, that's annoying.
- 1:06:31But it was kind of cool, though, because he was also a podcaster.
- 1:06:34And then I was like what? We do a podcast too but we drink
- 1:06:37on ours. And then it was funny cuz you
- 1:06:39could tell the difference of how we were right cuz we were like
- 1:06:42his was more of a podcast around similar kind of to our deal, but
- 1:06:48his they did make. At a point to not make it
- 1:06:51explicit content so that anybody could listen to.
- 1:06:54And then we're just more like we're free form in the in the
- 1:06:57sense of like we want people to be people, show up as people and
- 1:07:00not feel like they have to exactly be, you know, polished
- 1:07:03up. You know, because that that was
- 1:07:05our thing, at least. Like that was one of our main
- 1:07:07things that we just wanted to make sure that we were showing
- 1:07:11up intentionally and how someone wanted it like freely and
- 1:07:15fluidly be able to show up, right.
- 1:07:18Well, I just you just just be yourself and we and we accept
- 1:07:21for who you are or what whatever you do like.
- 1:07:25We cuss a lot. Because a lot we we're we're all
- 1:07:28not perfect. Well, they're.
- 1:07:30You know, yeah. And that's the thing.
- 1:07:31Like they're they're, I mean how boring would this place be if
- 1:07:34everybody was the same and thought the same and expecting?
- 1:07:37I mean, I look at like I, I blame for where we are in
- 1:07:40society. I blame the microwave.
- 1:07:42The microwave tell us more. Well because.
- 1:07:46You know, you know. I want to know this microwave.
- 1:07:49Yeah, tell us why we should be revolting against this.
- 1:07:51Thing. Well, the microwave, if you
- 1:07:53think about it, it changed. It made us impatient.
- 1:07:57So you used to grow up as a kid and you spent time.
- 1:08:00You watched your mom or your dad.
- 1:08:02In my case, my dad cooked a lot. My mom cooked a lot too.
- 1:08:05But. You know, you watch them prepare
- 1:08:08dinner and you know it was it was a family time and you sit
- 1:08:11down and you have dinner and and you know it's like anything you
- 1:08:16have to work hard towards that takes time, you appreciate more.
- 1:08:21And so the microwave came along and all of a sudden people
- 1:08:24weren't sitting down at dinner time with their families
- 1:08:27anymore, you know, and they they became impatient like everything
- 1:08:31needs to happen now and then. You know, like you guys don't
- 1:08:36remember this, but the dialup Internet, You know, like.
- 1:08:38Oh, I was around for. I.
- 1:08:41Was I was? I was.
- 1:08:42I was around that. Ass.
- 1:08:44OK. They were like 40.
- 1:08:47Yeah, I was not well. See, I wasn't allowed on the.
- 1:08:50Internet when I was 4. Because we didn't have it.
- 1:08:52Did it come out before I was born?
- 1:08:53Yes. But also, you're forgetting that
- 1:08:56I'm an immigrant family, so we couldn't afford it until a
- 1:08:59certain age. Yeah, that comes.
- 1:09:01Into play, but I think it. I think it does.
- 1:09:03I think it changes. And that that's the thing like I
- 1:09:06I think where we we have become in a society, we think we have
- 1:09:10such absolute truths in our brain.
- 1:09:12Like we think everything's just got to be a certain way.
- 1:09:15Like like me, like if somebody came up to you and goes, oh,
- 1:09:18it's pride month. Yeah, I don't like that month.
- 1:09:21It that doesn't that it's not for any other reason than I
- 1:09:24don't it doesn't matter like it like if you're truly love
- 1:09:30people, like why do we need. Like like the Valentine's Day
- 1:09:34stuff. No, Like, no.
- 1:09:36Like any of it. Like, I don't like, I think I
- 1:09:39don't like filling out a job application and ask me what race
- 1:09:43I am or like, why, Like does it matter?
- 1:09:47Like if you're truly not racist, you know, like like, but we're
- 1:09:52doing all these things to like stop all these political
- 1:09:54problems and you know, racism and and you know, acceptance and
- 1:10:00equity and all of this stuff, But why?
- 1:10:03Yeah, like if you, if you really like, if you, if you're really
- 1:10:06not a racist company, then hey, just ask me qualifications on my
- 1:10:12job. Like what?
- 1:10:13Why does it matter? Does anybody really care like
- 1:10:16what color somebody is? Does anybody care what your
- 1:10:19sexual orientation is? I don't care.
- 1:10:22I don't care. I don't need a month celebrating
- 1:10:24my heterosexuality, and I don't need a month celebrating
- 1:10:27anybody's opposite of that or whatever.
- 1:10:29I don't care. Like I like people.
- 1:10:32And whatever you choose to do, that's fine.
- 1:10:34I don't care. And I'm not gonna treat you any
- 1:10:35differently regardless. And everybody has a lifestyle.
- 1:10:39Like, there's a lifestyle anywhere that I wouldn't choose.
- 1:10:42Like there's that's all over the place.
- 1:10:44We all have things like, I don't like Coca-Cola or I don't like
- 1:10:48my old fashions made with tequila.
- 1:10:50Okay. Fine.
- 1:10:51Who cares? Yeah, yeah, you know, like.
- 1:10:53I mean, I do agree with that. But to add, yeah, if I could.
- 1:11:01I think it it or like the reasoning for making a safe a
- 1:11:06safer place, I guess, right. A lot of that comes to it
- 1:11:08because people who identify as a different way or who were born a
- 1:11:14different way too are typically targeted for whatever reason.
- 1:11:20And I think a lot of that comes to making it become more
- 1:11:24normalized. I wonder.
- 1:11:26I do wonder if there becomes a day where.
- 1:11:29Maybe Pride Month doesn't exist because it has now become so
- 1:11:33normalized that people finally become more accepting, like as
- 1:11:38an example. And so then I do agree.
- 1:11:41Like, I always have felt like a really weird way when it came
- 1:11:44down to like, what race am I or whatever?
- 1:11:47But now that I'm on the other side of it in terms of like,
- 1:11:51I've gotten the opportunity to be able to interview people for
- 1:11:56where I work, you know, stuff like that.
- 1:11:58And. I've now seen the impact of not
- 1:12:02being intentional about diversifying your your your
- 1:12:06group of of employees. To your point, everybody has a
- 1:12:10different idea, different ideals, different beliefs,
- 1:12:14whatever. And the best organizations, the
- 1:12:17best societies, the best places thrive when everyone.
- 1:12:22Is able to be free and everyone is able to create their value.
- 1:12:27And when you are not intentional about creating that space to
- 1:12:31diversify, you unintentionally become and easily Just because
- 1:12:37we're human and we crave connection and we crave that
- 1:12:40that sense of connection with people that that is ingrained in
- 1:12:43our DNA, that is the only way that human, our species survives
- 1:12:47is that we are making those connections we tend to look for.
- 1:12:51Agreeable people or people who agree with your beliefs.
- 1:12:55You don't tend to look for people who don't agree with you,
- 1:12:59yeah? And those are the ways and but
- 1:13:01that's that's normal though like that like in our attempt to
- 1:13:05desegregate in the 50s and 60s like we spent all this time like
- 1:13:11trying to force this and then what happens like you segregate
- 1:13:16you, you gravitate towards. The people that you're
- 1:13:20comfortable with, that you like anyway, so like now like how So
- 1:13:25yeah, we might all go to school together but is our is our
- 1:13:30country better today. Like it is more divided today
- 1:13:35than it's ever been And like we because.
- 1:13:38And the reason is, is because we're trying to force it through
- 1:13:41law and through regulation through.
- 1:13:44All of this rather than just saying hey why don't we just
- 1:13:46teach our kids to be decent human beings You know like just
- 1:13:50be a good person like hey they look different than you.
- 1:13:53They're they're not they they look different and that's okay
- 1:13:57like that's fine love like and that's the you see all these
- 1:14:00studies they they bring kids out like black kid got a white kid
- 1:14:04got a you know all the different color kids and and nobody the
- 1:14:09kids don't even notice the difference until an adult.
- 1:14:13Shows them and tells them. About Well, there have also been
- 1:14:16studies on the other end where they do notice a difference in
- 1:14:19terms. Of the ones that were in raised
- 1:14:21in a family that. Yeah, or they're like, who is
- 1:14:24the prettier child? Go ahead, you can still speak
- 1:14:26because Dusty can make it loud. I came.
- 1:14:28From a country that I had never seen an African American.
- 1:14:34So for 12 years of my life I had never seen.
- 1:14:41Anything but anybody that looked like me.
- 1:14:44And so when I arrived here and I saw all the different cultures
- 1:14:51and people, I was amazed. I was like, wow, you know, so
- 1:14:57we're all the same, Yeah. But it was just.
- 1:15:01Also I. Or not.
- 1:15:02Or not. Yeah.
- 1:15:02Yeah, but it becomes when you embrace the fact that.
- 1:15:06We are not the same and embracing that, right, Because
- 1:15:09that's what you that's what you really appreciate people for
- 1:15:12people. Like, I don't.
- 1:15:13We don't need to be the same there.
- 1:15:15Like this whole equality thing and equity thing.
- 1:15:17I don't like, I don't like that. Like why?
- 1:15:19If so we're right back to that. If we were all the same how
- 1:15:23boring would it be. And but yet we've got
- 1:15:25governments trying to push it. Let's it make everybody the
- 1:15:28same. No.
- 1:15:29Like it. We we have to we have to come
- 1:15:33about this naturally. Because if you try to force it,
- 1:15:38it's just going to cause even more division.
- 1:15:40Now I I think you should prosecute when it's the
- 1:15:46opposite, you know. So when when you're when you
- 1:15:49have someone in society who is disparaging against someone
- 1:15:53because they're different, that should be prosecuted.
- 1:15:56It should not. I mean and prosecuting might be
- 1:15:58a too big of a war. Trying to say like a bad thing
- 1:16:02like. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:02Like, yeah, there should be. I mean, there's a like.
- 1:16:05We don't. We don't want to allow that kind
- 1:16:06of behavior. But but we don't need to like,
- 1:16:10try to. You can't force, you can't force
- 1:16:14good behavior. Just teach kids to start young.
- 1:16:17Like be just be good people. So how do you do it for older
- 1:16:21people? Like, I don't struggle on that
- 1:16:24though, you know? Like that's the thing you can't
- 1:16:25change people. That's.
- 1:16:26And that's the whole problem with how we're trying to run
- 1:16:29society now is we're we're concentrating on.
- 1:16:33On setting laws to change other people's behavior.
- 1:16:37And if you like, if you think like of psychology, if you draw
- 1:16:40a line down the middle of a page, you're on one side and
- 1:16:43everybody else is on the other. The only thing that you can
- 1:16:46control and have any influence on is the thing that's on your
- 1:16:49side of that line that's you like.
- 1:16:52And so anytime you're doing anything in life that crosses
- 1:16:55that line and goes to the other side, you're you're doing
- 1:17:00something that. You're never going to succeed at
- 1:17:04you because you can't change the behavior of somebody else.
- 1:17:08I'm not responsible for your happiness.
- 1:17:10I'm not responsible for your bad mood.
- 1:17:12I'm not responsible for anything.
- 1:17:14Like I can be the biggest jerk on the planet.
- 1:17:18That. That shit that you get to choose
- 1:17:21whether that affects you or not, you know, like it's so and but
- 1:17:25our governments like trying to control everything.
- 1:17:28Here's a great example of it. I'm I'm going like way off on a
- 1:17:30Tanger. Right now.
- 1:17:32I like it. We're going to, we're going to
- 1:17:34be adding this as a bonus. Yeah, so, so the so the, the
- 1:17:38great. The funny thing is, is we I went
- 1:17:41to El Salvador with Hazel. That's where she's from.
- 1:17:45And I think our first time was almost seven years ago, like, so
- 1:17:50that was my first time going there.
- 1:17:53And there was something. I didn't notice it right away.
- 1:17:57But San Salvador is a pretty big city.
- 1:17:59I think four or five million, maybe 6 million.
- 1:18:01I think the whole country is 6 and a half million or something
- 1:18:04like that. Yeah.
- 1:18:06Yeah. And and so it's a big city.
- 1:18:09And then the roads are near. I drive an F-154 truck.
- 1:18:11You can't. I mean, you can drive it down
- 1:18:14there, but your mirror's knocked off.
- 1:18:15You know, like. You're breaking cars.
- 1:18:18You're killing. Oh yeah.
- 1:18:20Like the your your tires are getting scratched, yeah.
- 1:18:22Absolutely. The rims are the.
- 1:18:24Rims are done. But I so, so I was there six
- 1:18:28years, 6-7 years ago we went and and we were there for I think
- 1:18:321312 or 1314 days, almost two weeks and I didn't realize it
- 1:18:38until. We were driving to the airport
- 1:18:41to leave. It was at 4:00 in the morning.
- 1:18:46Her dad was driving. No.
- 1:18:48We we. And there was a car wrecked.
- 1:18:51And it was the first wreck we'd seen.
- 1:18:52And I we were, she was like, that was the first wreck we've
- 1:18:55seen. Yeah.
- 1:18:56And I was like, that is weird. Like no one wrecks.
- 1:19:00No one wrecks. You don't see car wrecks like
- 1:19:04you can't drive across Wichita. You can't drive in Wichita for
- 1:19:0910 minutes without seeing a Fender Bender or a wreck and she
- 1:19:12laughs at it like Hazel laughed all the time, constantly.
- 1:19:16So I developed this theory that they don't wreck there because
- 1:19:25they don't try to over protect people.
- 1:19:28They don't have, they don't over protect you.
- 1:19:31If you cross the street and you get hit by a car, that is your
- 1:19:34fault. It's not the car's fault.
- 1:19:36The street is the car's property.
- 1:19:40That's their place to drive. They're not distracted.
- 1:19:44No. Like they're saying like no, no.
- 1:19:46And that's exactly what I'm saying.
- 1:19:48They're they. They know so here in the US,
- 1:19:51like everybody, somebody else. Right away we have it the.
- 1:19:55It's always somebody else's fault.
- 1:19:56Yeah, it's always somebody else's fault in the US down
- 1:20:00there. If if if you go and you walk
- 1:20:02across the street, you cross and you don't pay attention, you get
- 1:20:06hit. They're just going to drag your
- 1:20:07body off to the side. Sorry, that's your fault.
- 1:20:10Because. Nobody's getting sued for it.
- 1:20:12You're not going to go to jail for it because you chose to
- 1:20:16cross the road. And get And you didn't pay
- 1:20:19attention. That's your fault.
- 1:20:21But then you talk about not respecting human lives.
- 1:20:25No, no, no, no. Like that's not so the dragging
- 1:20:28a body off side of that's not that.
- 1:20:29Was that is kind of true? That was, that was a joke.
- 1:20:33In in in my country, in Laos, it's the same way too, because
- 1:20:37like there there's like people in like, you know what's it
- 1:20:41called like mopeds and they in mopeds and bigger cars and
- 1:20:44everything and they're sharing that road.
- 1:20:47Yeah, you They're not distracted because they can't afford a
- 1:20:50phone. They can't afford like all this
- 1:20:53stuff, you know what I mean? So you have to be careful.
- 1:20:55Well, and they have phones there.
- 1:20:56I mean, they have. But like, they're not like
- 1:20:59texting, texting or anything, you know?
- 1:21:01But down there, so down there, you everybody's paying
- 1:21:04attention. Yeah.
- 1:21:05And that doesn't mean that somebody doesn't have a phone in
- 1:21:08their hand. But here we, I believe that the
- 1:21:11US has gotten to the point that. We we feel like we are always
- 1:21:17protected. There's stoplights like down
- 1:21:20there. There's not even a lot of
- 1:21:21stoplights. It's a lot of, it's a lot of
- 1:21:24roundabouts. Yeah, roundabouts A.
- 1:21:26Lot of stuff like that. And I mean it's and it it looks
- 1:21:29like complete payoffs when people are driving, yeah, but
- 1:21:32they don't wreck. And there's only like ones one
- 1:21:35stoplight. Yeah, but see then how like I
- 1:21:39started by Lord has a shit ton of other issues.
- 1:21:43Like we're not going to gloss over that.
- 1:21:45Either no it. Doesn't and it.
- 1:21:46Did six years ago. Yeah.
- 1:21:47And if we compare El Salvador to the US in terms of economy, in
- 1:21:53terms of safety. It's safer today than anywhere,
- 1:21:56any major city in the US, El Salvador.
- 1:21:58Really. And so like what I'm saying is
- 1:22:00like it is just so crazy seeing all the differences between all
- 1:22:04the countries. I think Finland is still the
- 1:22:07number one country or something like that in the world, I think.
- 1:22:10It was like, I don't know, that was a couple of years ago that I
- 1:22:13looked at that, but it is just just so crazy, the differences
- 1:22:17between countries. Like I was having the same
- 1:22:20conversation with somebody that just yesterday too.
- 1:22:23We were talking about how in Mexico, for instance, like water
- 1:22:29and electricity are considered basic human rights.
- 1:22:33So here if you don't pay your water or electricity bill, you
- 1:22:37get it turned off, right? In Mexico, if you don't pay the
- 1:22:41water and electricity bill, you don't pay it.
- 1:22:44That's it. Like you should pay.
- 1:22:46You should pay once a year. But tons of people go without
- 1:22:50paying and it's fine. Nobody gets it shut off because
- 1:22:53it's a basic human right. And then like you come to the
- 1:22:56States and that's so different. And then you also look at Mexico
- 1:23:01as a country. And I mean they have a lot of
- 1:23:04other. Issues.
- 1:23:05They got some stuff right and it's just so crazy to see the
- 1:23:09different disparities between all the countries.
- 1:23:12Like, it's like you might have something good, but then you got
- 1:23:15something else that's not good. Yeah, well, and.
- 1:23:18That's like, how do you how do you like, yeah, it's like, how
- 1:23:20do you like find that, right? Balance and that and that that's
- 1:23:24The thing is is like it. I think we spend too much time
- 1:23:28worrying about that like like if if we just all spent that time.
- 1:23:33Each individually, just being good people like all the a lot
- 1:23:36of that stuff would just come natural.
- 1:23:38But we're spending we've got activists and organizations
- 1:23:41trying to force their opinions and their ideas down society's
- 1:23:46throats and and in reality like there's.
- 1:23:49There's only a handful of things in life that really matter, you
- 1:23:53know, Like, we need food, we need water.
- 1:23:55You know, Love's a pretty cool thing.
- 1:23:57Like, I mean, there's there's. Well, also, like if we go back
- 1:24:00down to psychology, that's what it is.
- 1:24:02Like if we go to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, those are
- 1:24:05the things that we need to be focusing on.
- 1:24:07Yeah, yeah. And love and shelter and safety,
- 1:24:10food. Well, and and religion.
- 1:24:14I mean, like, so I grew up. I grew up Christian.
- 1:24:16I'm still Christian. I'm a believer.
- 1:24:18But the The thing is, is that like like there's people that
- 1:24:23have like such a strong antichristianity viewpoint.
- 1:24:27And I and I never really understood that because I mean,
- 1:24:30you trust me. There's a lot of really crappy
- 1:24:32Christians, horrible human beings out there.
- 1:24:35Like just poor people. Like just people that I.
- 1:24:38Would never want to leave my kids around.
- 1:24:41I mean, but, but that can be said for any group of anybody
- 1:24:45like. But The thing is, is like how
- 1:24:48could you be against something that you know, the basic, you
- 1:24:52know, fundamental thing is, you know, the 10 commands.
- 1:24:55So they're all pretty. I don't think anybody disagrees
- 1:24:58with it. You know, like we do these good
- 1:25:00things and we treat people how we want to be.
- 1:25:03Treated and we, you know, we don't steal and we don't covet
- 1:25:05somebody else's wife. And we like these are not bad
- 1:25:08rules. It's just a lot of the people
- 1:25:10that practice them or crappy people, you know, and so they've
- 1:25:13kind of ruined it for for a lot of the people.
- 1:25:17But I I think that we got away from, you know, I think religion
- 1:25:21was a huge piece of of America and now everybody's like, oh, I
- 1:25:26don't want to, but you know what?
- 1:25:28Everybody has their religion. And like, whether it's a God
- 1:25:32they pray to or what, there's something they worship.
- 1:25:36Yeah, it could be TikTok. I don't know.
- 1:25:38But yeah, speaking there's, well, you know, that's a great
- 1:25:43conversation. So we're gonna.
- 1:25:45We're gonna go to the next. I'm gonna cut you off right now.
- 1:25:48You should. You should.
- 1:25:50I mean, we could go on and on and on because we're a great.
- 1:25:53You didn't know you were recording 6 podcasts tonight?
- 1:25:56That's what we're doing exactly. So Dusty's gonna ask you some
- 1:26:00lightning round questions. So we do this at the every end
- 1:26:03of our podcast. You started off like, well,
- 1:26:05lightning round time it's. I need lightning.
- 1:26:10I'll start it. I'll start it while you do that,
- 1:26:12then I'll start it while you do that, then.
- 1:26:15So the lightning round is a fun portion that we started to add
- 1:26:18at the end of the every episode. So it's just it's meant to be
- 1:26:21like these quick type of questions.
- 1:26:23You're going to tell us what you think and they're fun and you're
- 1:26:27going to tell us why. And then we're going to move on
- 1:26:30to the next question. So that's what Lightning round
- 1:26:32is. So first question.
- 1:26:35If you could have any superpower, what would it be and
- 1:26:38why we? Don't.
- 1:26:42Put a lot of thought into these are kind of fun.
- 1:26:44OK. Superpower, what would it be?
- 1:26:47You just want a mascal, right? Yeah.
- 1:26:49OK, that's all you only part of Mascal and.
- 1:26:52Nigerian, that's what he said with ice, I think.
- 1:26:54I wanted. Something too.
- 1:26:55You want some? He wanted only Mascal, too,
- 1:26:57apparently. OK, I'm kidding.
- 1:27:01I don't know what you. Wanted what you want in turn
- 1:27:04same. The ability to forget.
- 1:27:07The ability to forget. OK, tell us why.
- 1:27:10Well, I don't know. Like, I think a lot of your
- 1:27:12problems come from like hanging on to things that happened in
- 1:27:16the past or and they could be good, they could be bad.
- 1:27:18But like, yeah, like to forget and move on.
- 1:27:22Like almost like start from scratch every time.
- 1:27:24Yeah, like if I. Chose to.
- 1:27:27Like I don't wanna just forget everything, cuz there's certain
- 1:27:30things I wanna. You're like, I don't want
- 1:27:31dementia. I'm not choosing to have
- 1:27:33dementia. Right, I already have that
- 1:27:35enough, like I literally have to use an iPad when I perform cuz I
- 1:27:38can't remember the songs that I write.
- 1:27:40Yeah, Okay. So choosing Got It Okay.
- 1:27:43What is your favorite song to perform live?
- 1:27:46Right now it is. So there, so now I'm kind of
- 1:27:51tossed because I love Son of A Sinner Jelly Roll, but we just
- 1:27:59started doing the Tyler Childers song Feathered Indians, and I
- 1:28:06really like doing that one too. And it it's completely two
- 1:28:10totally different types of songs.
- 1:28:12But yeah, it does change though. What conspiracy theory do you
- 1:28:17believe in? I think there's, I think there's
- 1:28:21life outside of Earth now. I think we're super arrogant to
- 1:28:25think that we're the only ones here.
- 1:28:27Like, are you kidding me? Like.
- 1:28:29I think the same way. Have you heard the, uh, recent
- 1:28:31news that has been coming out? What's?
- 1:28:34The. Recent news What's on the the
- 1:28:35one in? The the like, the like,
- 1:28:37whistleblower dude that has been like, he's like, uh, you know,
- 1:28:41the government's got like 12UFO spaceships and they have alien
- 1:28:45bodies. Yeah, yeah, they've had.
- 1:28:46Bodies for years. There's.
- 1:28:48Yeah, yeah. Didn't you guys hear that the
- 1:28:50microwaves are aliens, Are alien technology?
- 1:28:54I think they are I. Yeah, like that.
- 1:28:56There's like a whole conspiracy theory around that, too, that
- 1:29:00microwaves are alien technology. Well, and like the whole.
- 1:29:02Like the birds I was. A long time ago The what?
- 1:29:05The Birds bird. Birds are just like birds.
- 1:29:08Are. The spine.
- 1:29:08The spine. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:29:11I mean, that one's kind of cool. I love.
- 1:29:12I love. I love birds.
- 1:29:14But, you know, sometimes I'm like, wait, dude, what do you.
- 1:29:17Yeah. Are you?
- 1:29:17What are you? Yeah.
- 1:29:19Yeah, why the fuck are you flying?
- 1:29:20You keep. Coming over here and looking
- 1:29:22funny at me and like, OK, what are you recording right now?
- 1:29:25Yeah. Have you ever ran into any owls?
- 1:29:27Hazel stopped doing that. No, I have, I have, I actually
- 1:29:32held, held a little baby. Yeah.
- 1:29:35One got this was a long time ago.
- 1:29:38But they're they're interesting creatures.
- 1:29:40Yeah. Yeah, I believe mermaids are
- 1:29:43real. Do what?
- 1:29:44I believe mermaids are real. That's my favorite conspiracy
- 1:29:46theory that I believe in. I mean.
- 1:29:48Mermaids. Yeah.
- 1:29:49No, not pretty mermaid. You have the hair for.
- 1:29:51It scary. Oh, thank you.
- 1:29:53Thank you. No, no, scary gross.
- 1:29:57Like the ones that you see on the Tik Toks and they're like we
- 1:30:00just saw this crawler up, it's like this like alien looking
- 1:30:03mermaid, yeah. We have some alien looking type
- 1:30:06fish. No not.
- 1:30:07A hot. Mermaid.
- 1:30:09Yeah, not a hot mermaid. That's not real.
- 1:30:13Who is your favorite singer of all time?
- 1:30:22Himself. Luciano Pavarotti.
- 1:30:24Yeah. I I mean, I think like as far as
- 1:30:27like a vocal like, you know, I don't know, for vocal power and
- 1:30:32all of that. Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:30:34OK, if you could switch lives with anyone for a day, who would
- 1:30:39it be and why? Reagan.
- 1:30:40Ronald Reagan? Yeah, OK, tell us why.
- 1:30:43I I don't know. I just think it'd be cool.
- 1:30:45Like he was an actor. He's president.
- 1:30:50He knew if there was aliens or not.
- 1:30:52Yeah, that's true. He came back to that.
- 1:30:54Yeah, a lot of that stuff started there with like all the
- 1:30:56microwave stuff, Good jokes. Yeah, he had great jokes.
- 1:31:00Like, the best jokes of any president.
- 1:31:02No, So totally. Go on YouTube and Google.
- 1:31:05Just Ronald Reagan jokes. The dude was like.
- 1:31:10Audience captivator, Yes. Whether it regardless of whether
- 1:31:14you agree with politics or whatever like that, you cannot
- 1:31:17deny that he was like. Here's charismatic.
- 1:31:19He was so witty too. Like just.
- 1:31:22Yeah. Anyway, so as it turns out, I
- 1:31:24can be president of the United. States, Yes, you can.
- 1:31:26I'm. Fucking leaving.
- 1:31:33All right, what's the most adventurous thing you've ever
- 1:31:35done? When I was in New Zealand in
- 1:31:392000, I was in Queenstown and it was the place where they
- 1:31:49commercialized bungee jumping. So it was the 1st place that
- 1:31:53like actually did it as a sport like you.
- 1:31:57And so I'm terrified of heights and my buddy like.
- 1:32:03I don't know what word he used, but basically called me a
- 1:32:05chicken. Yeah, yeah, he called you a
- 1:32:06pussy. I don't even know if it was
- 1:32:08that. I can't, I can't remember
- 1:32:10recall. But whatever it was, it was
- 1:32:12like, I've got to do this now, you know.
- 1:32:14So I bungee jumped. That's scary.
- 1:32:17And and it was, it was a Blizzard like they it didn't
- 1:32:22start snowing until about 5 minutes before I was out there.
- 1:32:27And it was coming down so hard. My sweat.
- 1:32:33I had a sweat kind of a sweatshirt on and it was, it was
- 1:32:38a wet snow and it was starting to get colder and starting to
- 1:32:43freeze. But my my sweater was soaked.
- 1:32:45And then you go up on this metal platform and as soon as I
- 1:32:48stepped on it, my foot slips and I'm like.
- 1:32:51I'm, you know, I'm like 150 or 160 feet over a river, like a
- 1:32:56roaring river. You know.
- 1:32:58Like, and yeah, so anyway. But it was also one of the
- 1:33:03coolest things ever did. But I was terror.
- 1:33:05I was, so I was oh. Yeah, Bungie jumping is like
- 1:33:08where you bounce back up, right? Oh yeah, and so so here's the
- 1:33:12thing. There was this little blow up
- 1:33:13like. Raft down there with a guy had
- 1:33:16this long PVC pole and his job was to get because I'm I'm doing
- 1:33:20it over a river. So his job is to get you you
- 1:33:23know once you stop bouncing get you off of the bungee and all
- 1:33:26this and so I'm already free. I mean I'm like I feel like I'm
- 1:33:29getting ready to die. I.
- 1:33:31Mean it was. Hypothermia setting in freezing
- 1:33:34and I'm pretty wet and I get. I get down into the raft, yeah,
- 1:33:40sorry. I get down into the raft and he
- 1:33:42goes, so I'm, I'm down and he goes, okay, you can, you need to
- 1:33:47lay back now. And so I lay back and the raft
- 1:33:51has like 4 inches of freezing water in the bottom.
- 1:33:56Of it. You're like, I'm not gonna get
- 1:33:57fucking. Warmed.
- 1:33:58I was soaked. So I literally, I'm walking like
- 1:34:02it's a mile or so up this like winding path to get back up to
- 1:34:07the top. And I had my shirt.
- 1:34:09I took my shirt off because I was soaking wet and I was
- 1:34:13freezing. Yeah, and.
- 1:34:14They had the bus heater on me. We were in a bus and I I sat in
- 1:34:19that thing and then the hotel room for like 3 hours with the
- 1:34:23heat on the highest level it could get before I thought out.
- 1:34:28You didn't even get into. Like, I'm not sure.
- 1:34:29I don't, No. No.
- 1:34:31I mean, the hot water felt like my skin was burning, you know,
- 1:34:34like it was like because I was, I was just frozen.
- 1:34:36So yeah, it was like, like, it was, It was funny because my,
- 1:34:41the original problem was I'm scared of heights and I was
- 1:34:43bungee jumping. But it turned into the worst
- 1:34:46part about that was the freezing cold water.
- 1:34:50In the Blizzard? No big deal.
- 1:34:52No big deal. Oh my God.
- 1:34:55What was your most embarrassing hairstyle?
- 1:34:59OK, so several years ago, Ty Marcel was at Elements.
- 1:35:08It used to be right here in Old Town.
- 1:35:09It's not there anymore. It's still a hair place, I think
- 1:35:12though. And I was at WB and they were
- 1:35:16actually one of my advertising clients.
- 1:35:17And it wasn't tied. That did my hair.
- 1:35:20But I I decided I wanted to do the whole bleach thing, You
- 1:35:23know, I wanted to go platinum. Yeah.
- 1:35:26And so I go in there after work. I go in there after work.
- 1:35:30So this is probably 2324 years ago.
- 1:35:36You know, I go in after work a little early, maybe 4:00
- 1:35:39o'clock. I left at 11 because.
- 1:35:43The first round came out and it was like fire engine orange.
- 1:35:49Yeah, that was your heart. That happened.
- 1:35:51Was your heart? Was your hair dark?
- 1:35:53No. Same as it is now.
- 1:35:55Yeah. So they they had to do it three
- 1:35:59or four times like that though he looks and yeah that was so
- 1:36:02that was the look I was going for and.
- 1:36:07But so anyway, the my my scalp burned from all the chemicals.
- 1:36:11So my literally my whole scalp was three days later it was all
- 1:36:17scab. It was it was bad.
- 1:36:20Like it was bad. So the reason I brought up tie
- 1:36:23is that they brought him over because he was like the good one
- 1:36:28to try to figure out how to fix my hair.
- 1:36:30But they they did it. And then also and my scalp, my
- 1:36:33so my scalp was my hair was dry. So dry.
- 1:36:37Like for for months it was it was like completely just
- 1:36:41chemically burned. But I tell I wish I had a
- 1:36:45picture to show you cuz Zac ain't got nothing on what I.
- 1:36:50Well, you know what? Zac Efron Can't Sing.
- 1:36:53That's true, yeah. Zac Efron Can't Sing.
- 1:36:56I didn't. Know that.
- 1:36:57Yeah, on High School Musical, he was just basically the puppet.
- 1:37:03You know what? A lot of our recording artists,
- 1:37:05most popular recording artists, are still the same way.
- 1:37:08They Can't Sing, yeah. They Can't Sing.
- 1:37:10He Can't Sing like the I remember I watch the.
- 1:37:13Thing is that I also still have a shot to be a singer.
- 1:37:16Yeah. I opened up for I'm not going to
- 1:37:19name the band, but I opened up for a fairly popular band and I
- 1:37:25I was amazed that how much they spent 20 some years doing this
- 1:37:30for a living. From a vocal standpoint, not
- 1:37:33from the band. The band was awesome.
- 1:37:34Yeah, yeah, yeah. But like, a lot of work.
- 1:37:36Yeah, yeah, a lot of. Auto.
- 1:37:38Tune. You can do a lot of stuff.
- 1:37:39Like you guys are actually gonna be able to take this podcast and
- 1:37:43make it sound cool. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:37:45I can do that, yeah. Yeah, even with me here.
- 1:37:48So, I mean, that's the thing. It's no different in music.
- 1:37:53True. True.
- 1:37:55What is your most memorable fan story?
- 1:37:59Wait, fan? Yeah, memorable fan story.
- 1:38:02Either you as a fan or a fan of yours, Yes, and it could include
- 1:38:08something that Hazel did. Yeah, Well, look.
- 1:38:12This is your chance to embarrass her.
- 1:38:14I will tell you what, Hazel, Hazel, I'm going to say that my,
- 1:38:21I'm, I'm a huge fan of her. So she does get up and sing a
- 1:38:25couple of songs occasionally whenever I decide to call her
- 1:38:28up. And and it's always so cool
- 1:38:31because I mean, first she's hot, so you like, but she also sings
- 1:38:37very well and like, it's a little humbling when she's done.
- 1:38:44And the most noise that's been made is always after Hazel
- 1:38:47sings, you know, like all night long.
- 1:38:50But I but I love it. And people, people tell me
- 1:38:54they're like, why doesn't she sing more?
- 1:38:55But I'm like, you know what? I love the fact that she comes
- 1:38:59up, does one or two maybe 3 songs.
- 1:39:02It's special. Like if she did it all night, it
- 1:39:04wouldn't be special, you know, like it would be oh Hazel
- 1:39:06singing still like when I sing like it's, you know, over a long
- 1:39:11period of time. So it's it's like that little
- 1:39:13sprinkle of hey, we're going to change things up nobody.
- 1:39:17I mean, if you've never seen this play, you don't know what's
- 1:39:19gonna happen. If you've seen this play, you
- 1:39:20know that it might happen, but it might not, cuz I just look at
- 1:39:24and kind of try to judge what mood she's in and she never
- 1:39:28knows when it's gonna happen. That's all.
- 1:39:30You're, like, not right now. Yeah.
- 1:39:31Not right now. Yeah.
- 1:39:34Yeah, and she's me. Up I'm not in the mood.
- 1:39:37And I yeah. And I don't.
- 1:39:39But that's a, I mean that's a pretty cool fan thing but I, you
- 1:39:42know, I, I I will say, can I go further?
- 1:39:45Yeah. OK, so this isn't really a fan
- 1:39:47thing, but you know, back in back in the days and the Sex and
- 1:39:51the City days when that show was.
- 1:39:53Just super hot. And then Northern, well, we're
- 1:39:56talking about the show, yeah. Yeah, I know.
- 1:40:01I'm talking about the show too. I love both.
- 1:40:03I. Love both around I.
- 1:40:05Love both. She enjoys her nights.
- 1:40:09So. I can see myself as Samantha.
- 1:40:14So I had this, so I had I was on a flight, I was working, I was
- 1:40:17heading to Nashville and I was on this flight with John
- 1:40:22Corbett. So he was the dude from in Sex
- 1:40:26in the City and then on Northern Northern Exposure I think was
- 1:40:30the other show he did and then he had just recently put out a
- 1:40:33country album, which wasn't that good.
- 1:40:36But anyway, so. If you yeah, look up John
- 1:40:40Corbett, there he is. Him.
- 1:40:44Yeah. Oh, what's his name?
- 1:40:46Aiden or something? Yeah.
- 1:40:48Yeah, I think that was his name right there, remember?
- 1:40:50So I'm on this plane and I'm, I look over like, so he's my aisle
- 1:40:54partner, like he said right here and he's all leathered up.
- 1:40:57He's got like he he looks like a biker almost, you know, And he's
- 1:41:01got his, his beat up guitar bag with his guitar right there with
- 1:41:05him and I recognized him. But I'm not like a a fanboy, you
- 1:41:11know, like, I mean I I was a huge fan of that show, but I
- 1:41:16just, I looked over at him and I was like what kind of guitar you
- 1:41:20play, you know, like and so I think he really loved the fact
- 1:41:24that I wasn't like hey you want an hour to you know take a
- 1:41:27picture with me or whatever. And we we literally talked about
- 1:41:30guitars for the next hour and a half or where however long it
- 1:41:34was and so. So we get to Nashville and I'm
- 1:41:39I'm, I I'm walking to the luggage to get my luggage and he
- 1:41:44walks up right next to me and we're and we still keep talking.
- 1:41:48And then my friend who I'm going to see who works at an art at an
- 1:41:52at the time she worked in an artist agency and she calls and
- 1:41:57so I'm on the phone with her. He's standing right here and all
- 1:42:00of a sudden I hear all these. Like teenage girl screams and
- 1:42:06they just swarm over there. And so my friend Michelle is on
- 1:42:12the phone going. What's going on?
- 1:42:15And I was like, I don't and I didn't know his name.
- 1:42:17So I I just knew I was like he's, I can't remember his real
- 1:42:20name. Yeah, yeah, that's and.
- 1:42:21So yeah, I was like. I don't think right now.
- 1:42:25What do you mean? What are you doing?
- 1:42:27You want me to invite him? Over.
- 1:42:28Yeah, yeah, he said that. He's down to get a drink.
- 1:42:31So I'm sitting there and I go, I go, well, I don't, I don't know.
- 1:42:36But the the dude from Sex in the City that just did it.
- 1:42:41A country album is here. We've been talking on the plane
- 1:42:45and we're talking right now and everybody's trying to get his
- 1:42:47autograph and they're like, oh, John and I was like, yeah, and
- 1:42:51she goes tell him. Telling Mitch said hi and I was
- 1:42:56like. How the fuck you know him?
- 1:42:58What? And and I turn over, I'm like,
- 1:43:01hey, Mitch says hi and she he goes, you know Mitch.
- 1:43:06Small world. Are we going to the same party?
- 1:43:09Like I was like, OK, this is weird and she so anyway, like
- 1:43:13Long story short, she wrapped she wrapped him at the artist
- 1:43:16agency so they they were close and he was coming to town.
- 1:43:19And we were possibly going to the same event that night.
- 1:43:24But yeah, anyway, that is, it was crazy.
- 1:43:26It was kind of a funny little fan story.
- 1:43:28Yeah, yeah, that's a good story. Yeah, shit.
- 1:43:31OK, so we have one more. Well, this.
- 1:43:34This one's a little hard. Or no, we're skipping that.
- 1:43:37One. Let's go.
- 1:43:38OK, let's do it. Just do the #9.
- 1:43:41OK, so we normally try to send this out ahead of time, but we'd
- 1:43:45love to hear you try to. Sound it off now.
- 1:43:48If you had to pick three songs for your life anthem, what would
- 1:43:51they be and why songs, not artists and not albums?
- 1:43:57Songs, not artists, not albums. We didn't let people choose
- 1:44:01albums and they were upset about that.
- 1:44:05Yeah, so I'm gonna go back to my Southern Baptist roots.
- 1:44:14And I would say there's a couple of hymns.
- 1:44:17I'll Fly Away would be one. And I don't know why this next
- 1:44:24one just came to my head, but it's here I go again.
- 1:44:29Is that the name of the song? Whitesnake.
- 1:44:31Here I go again. I don't know why.
- 1:44:35Like, I just like it just has a cool beat, you know?
- 1:44:40And then. Did you say 3?
- 1:44:43Yeah, you can do one more 3. Man, I don't know.
- 1:44:50That's hard. You're allowed to do 2, then
- 1:44:54we'll allow it. Yeah, that is hard cuz I didn't
- 1:44:56get to think about it. Like, I mean The thing is, is my
- 1:45:01songs. And love for songs changes, you
- 1:45:05know, like you asked earlier what's my favorite song to
- 1:45:07perform like like yeah, yeah. Like Son of a Sinner is I love
- 1:45:11performing it right now. Prior to that it was cover me
- 1:45:15up. But yeah, I mean I I would say,
- 1:45:21I would say it yeah. Changes depending on the, you
- 1:45:24know place you are in life right now.
- 1:45:28Yeah. But I'll fly away definitely.
- 1:45:30Definitely. That's a good life, Life anthem.
- 1:45:33OK, so this last question is our way of almost wrapping up.
- 1:45:38But also, you know, we've now heard a little bit about your
- 1:45:41story, your passions, your interests and your disinterests.
- 1:45:44Also tell us and our listeners, how can everyone find you and
- 1:45:51the red dirt, red misfits? And also how can we support you?
- 1:45:56I mean, you know, so we don't do the whole website stuff.
- 1:45:59We've got the at Dirt Rd. Misfits is our handle on
- 1:46:05Facebook. So it's Jared Brown and the Dirt
- 1:46:07Rd. Misfits.
- 1:46:08But if you just typed in at Dirt Rd.
- 1:46:10Misfits, it's it's there. That's where you can find us on
- 1:46:14Snapchat. Pornhub only fans, no.
- 1:46:22That's how we support them. That's how we support them.
- 1:46:25Yeah. So I would say that I'm.
- 1:46:34Sorry he was. Making the canals to.
- 1:46:38Us. I was like, I mean, I
- 1:46:40compromise. I recognize the signal.
- 1:46:42I recognize that. He was like.
- 1:46:44Gonna turn down I'm like cuz I you.
- 1:46:46Cuz Well, for a minute loud, yeah.
- 1:46:47Yeah, he's always telling us that we're too loud or some
- 1:46:50other shit. Yeah, yeah, we're like, what do
- 1:46:53you want like? I know he's speaking to me.
- 1:46:56I know it. You know, I, I mean, so going
- 1:47:01back to, I know you guys are having fun, you know?
- 1:47:04Yeah. No.
- 1:47:06That's how we can support you. No, I would say that like the
- 1:47:09biggest support is just like just support local music.
- 1:47:14You know, I mean I don't I I would love, I would love support
- 1:47:20with our band. But I don't I I would love more
- 1:47:24that for just people to support you know support local music,
- 1:47:29local restaurants, local grocery stores, local everything.
- 1:47:32I mean it's it's hard like we go out.
- 1:47:37I get asked so many times. Can you, hey, can you do this
- 1:47:40gig for $350.00? I'm like like all six of us.
- 1:47:46You know, we've got 5 band members and A and a sound guy
- 1:47:51and and they think, Oh well, you go there and you set up.
- 1:47:54It's three hours. No, it's like sometimes like
- 1:47:58there's places I go. I have to set up so early to to
- 1:48:02avoid the dinner crowd. By the end of the day, it's a 12
- 1:48:05hour day. You know and and and you know,
- 1:48:10Dusty, I mean like the you, you have an art, you have a craft.
- 1:48:14Like we're getting paid for the time that we've spent in our
- 1:48:17life to get to this point. Not we're not getting paid for
- 1:48:20the moment that we're here on stage.
- 1:48:22Like we've invested a lot of time, a lot of money, a lot of
- 1:48:25everything and and you know we go out and make 100 bucks
- 1:48:32playing a four hour gig that's actually 7 or 8 hours.
- 1:48:36You know and each one of us drove our own vehicle and you
- 1:48:40know it it's it's expensive. And so I the support would be go
- 1:48:46see shows follow us on online and you know when you get out
- 1:48:50there throw a tip in the bucket or send a Venmo or something for
- 1:48:53a tip. You know, I mean it's it's nice.
- 1:48:56People tend not to do that when it's a band like I can go and
- 1:48:59make. More money on tips than the
- 1:49:02venues paying me if I'm solo or a duo.
- 1:49:05But when there's a band, it's like, no, it's I don't know if
- 1:49:07it's like an intimidation thing or like they don't think you
- 1:49:10need it or whatever. But when it's a full band, it's
- 1:49:13like there's like 30-30 dollars in the tip jar and I can go play
- 1:49:19solo and have 300. Yeah, it's it's just, it's a
- 1:49:23weird thing. But yeah, like the band is what
- 1:49:25cost the money, you know? Like, I've got to go put new
- 1:49:28tires on the trailer, I've got a sound system I've got.
- 1:49:30Yeah, you've got thousands and thousands of dollars invested in
- 1:49:33equipment. Yeah, we often joke every time
- 1:49:37we look at our balance in our bank accounts.
- 1:49:39Right now we're like, y'all we can afford.
- 1:49:43We can finally afford tune on this podcast, he's finally a
- 1:49:49part of the team, but alright. Guys, well, but Jared, I
- 1:49:54appreciate you coming to our podcast at the end.
- 1:49:57We always do a cheers. Yes.
- 1:49:59So it's in Spanish, just to let you know, but I mean, you're
- 1:50:02used to it. Okay.
- 1:50:04So PA Riva pavaco Pacentro ipadentro, here to you, here to
- 1:50:09you. Here to you.
- 1:50:14Thank you guys, you were awesome.
