- 1:13Speaker 5: Welcome to another edition of When the Bell Rings. I'm
- 1:17Speaker 5: the old Cory David alongside me with my co host
- 1:20Speaker 5: Justin Greenberg. Today's a special episode as we look back
- 1:25Speaker 5: at the life of the late Hulk Hogan, the highs,
- 1:29Speaker 5: blows and everything in between.
- 1:31Speaker 3: We give it to you real, unlike no other. Let's
- 1:35Speaker 3: get it.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Hulk Hogan was the face of pro wrestling. He's the
- 1:41Speaker 1: Babe Ruth of pro wrestling, and if you haven't heard,
- 1:45Speaker 1: he passed away earlier this week at the age of
- 1:48Speaker 1: seventy one. I would have thought he's older. I could
- 1:51Speaker 1: have sworn he was in his mid seventies, but only
- 1:54Speaker 1: seventy one years old, and I know he was dealing
- 1:57Speaker 1: with health issues, and people around him were saying the
- 2:01Speaker 1: health issues were fabricated, but I tend to believe that
- 2:06Speaker 1: he was not in the best of health. I mean,
- 2:07Speaker 1: there's been rumors that he had a neck fusion surgery
- 2:10Speaker 1: and pretty much hasn't been able to speak since that surgery,
- 2:14Speaker 1: and he died of a heart attack earlier in the week.
- 2:18Speaker 1: But there would be no modern wrestling that we know
- 2:22Speaker 1: of without Hulk Hogan. And that's just a fact. With
- 2:26Speaker 1: Vince McMahon and Hulk Hogan taking pro wrestling from pretty
- 2:33Speaker 1: much like Smoky filed Anas, you were rarely gonna find
- 2:37Speaker 1: kids at wrestling events in the sixties and seventies and
- 2:42Speaker 1: or early eighties. I'm not saying kids didn't go to wrestling,
- 2:45Speaker 1: but for the most part, if you look at the
- 2:47Speaker 1: crowds of these events, you know, with Pedro Morales and
- 2:51Speaker 1: Bruno San Martino, and if you want to go to
- 2:53Speaker 1: the NWA, people like Harley Race and the Funk Brothers,
- 2:58Speaker 1: you rarely saw him young kids in the arenas. And
- 3:04Speaker 1: what Hulk Hogan and Vince McMahon did is they took
- 3:07Speaker 1: pro wrestling from sort of a niche thing and They
- 3:11Speaker 1: made it a global phenomenon and made it acceptable for kids, teenagers, adults,
- 3:17Speaker 1: grandparents to all go to pro wrestling and not be
- 3:20Speaker 1: ashamed of going to a pro wrestling event. Now, Hogan
- 3:25Speaker 1: started his career in the late seventies and joined the AWA.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Now.
- 3:31Speaker 1: He initially had a run in the then WWWF and
- 3:36Speaker 1: feuded with the likes of Andre the Giant and the
- 3:39Speaker 1: famously had a match at Chase Stadium against Andrea the
- 3:42Speaker 1: Giant and basically Vince McMahon senior, Vince's dad. He didn't
- 3:50Speaker 1: like the idea of Hogan going into Hollywood because Hogan
- 3:53Speaker 1: was offered a role in Rocky three as Thunderlips, one
- 3:58Speaker 1: of my favorite movies of all time, and Vince Senior
- 4:02Speaker 1: was very old school and he didn't want to, you know,
- 4:06Speaker 1: let Hogan do that. So Hogan left the WWF and
- 4:10Speaker 1: joined the AWA, which is a company run by verne Gania.
- 4:14Speaker 1: And that's really when Hulkamania started to run wild. That's
- 4:18Speaker 1: when you got a lot of the Hulk Hogan. You know,
- 4:21Speaker 1: sort of things that you would know later on in life,
- 4:25Speaker 1: like the ripping of the shirt and let me tell
- 4:27Speaker 1: you something, brother, and you know, doing the interviews with
- 4:30Speaker 1: me and Gene Oakerland because me and Gene was a
- 4:32Speaker 1: part of the AWA. Now, Hogan was influenced by a
- 4:35Speaker 1: lot of people, particularly Superstar Billy Graham. He's pretty much
- 4:39Speaker 1: the prototype for what Hulk Hogan became. Those phrases, the
- 4:43Speaker 1: tie die, the muscles, talking in that sort of lingo
- 4:48Speaker 1: that Hogan would do, and Superstar was way ahead of
- 4:51Speaker 1: his time. Really also influenced many others, including Jesse the
- 4:54Speaker 1: Body Ventorra. But Hogan's in the AWA and Vern never
- 5:00Speaker 1: goes in with Hogan like he's the biggest attraction in
- 5:03Speaker 1: the company, but they never gave him the world title.
- 5:07Speaker 1: He had matches versus Nick Bockwinkle and he'd win, and
- 5:10Speaker 1: then you think he was winning the title, and lo
- 5:13Speaker 1: and behold, they would do like a screw job sort
- 5:16Speaker 1: of finish and the title would be taken away from him.
- 5:18Speaker 1: And Hogan's pretty much just like, when are you gonna
- 5:20Speaker 1: strap the rocket to me? Fully, because I'm clearly the
- 5:23Speaker 1: biggest name in this business right now. I was just
- 5:26Speaker 1: in Rocky three, one of the biggest movies of all time.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Give me the title. But he knew that Vern was
- 5:32Speaker 1: not going to be able to capitalize on the success
- 5:36Speaker 1: of what Hogan was doing, and he knew the real
- 5:39Speaker 1: money was back in New York. And at this time,
- 5:43Speaker 1: Vince McMahon Senior sold his company to his son, Vince
- 5:48Speaker 1: McMahon Junior, the one that most of you guys know,
- 5:51Speaker 1: and Vince Junior was going to do everything different that
- 5:55Speaker 1: his father was doing and pretty much was going to
- 5:58Speaker 1: allow for show business to be involved with pro wrestling.
- 6:03Speaker 1: And Hogan decided to go back to the WWF and
- 6:07Speaker 1: pretty much in a month or so won the championship
- 6:11Speaker 1: from the Iron Chic January twenty third, nineteen eighty four,
- 6:15Speaker 1: And that's when a lot of people say that's when
- 6:18Speaker 1: hulk Emania started, but really, if you go back to
- 6:21Speaker 1: his a WA days, you'll see just hulk Comania was
- 6:25Speaker 1: running wild in the Minneapolis, Era area also. But yeah,
- 6:29Speaker 1: so Vince and Hogan pretty much changed the landscape of
- 6:35Speaker 1: pro wrestling. Hulk Hogan became the face of pro wrestling,
- 6:39Speaker 1: the Babe Ruth of pro wrestling. And I've heard people
- 6:43Speaker 1: say very few, but I've heard people say, oh, Vince
- 6:47Speaker 1: could have gave that spot to anybody and there would
- 6:52Speaker 1: have been the same success of the WWF which is
- 6:57Speaker 1: now the WWE, and I don't agree with that at all.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I really don't. You give it to someone like Randy
- 7:02Speaker 1: Savage who's completely paranoid and doesn't have, I think, the
- 7:08Speaker 1: ability to play the political stance. You know, there's a
- 7:13Speaker 1: lot of politics in pro wrestling. I'm not talking about
- 7:16Speaker 1: Donald Trump politics. I'm talking about playing it right and
- 7:19Speaker 1: knowing what to say and what not to say, and
- 7:21Speaker 1: how to present themselves on different talk shows and play
- 7:26Speaker 1: that game. And I don't think Macho Man would have
- 7:28Speaker 1: done that. A guy like Roddy Piper completely unhinged. And
- 7:31Speaker 1: I love those guys, and I love those guys actually
- 7:33Speaker 1: more than Hulk Hogan. I think they're better wrestlers and
- 7:36Speaker 1: more entertaining than the Hulkster. But Hogan was the right guy,
- 7:40Speaker 1: the only guy at that time the size. Hogan was
- 7:43Speaker 1: also like a foot bigger than both of those guys.
- 7:45Speaker 1: He was a mammoth. The guy was gigantic, six foot seven,
- 7:49Speaker 1: close to three hundred pounds of giant, oily tanned muscle,
- 7:54Speaker 1: with that iconic mustache and the bandanna and the yellow
- 7:58Speaker 1: trunks and the big boot in the leg drop. It
- 8:01Speaker 1: was all combining with the success of Rocky three, and
- 8:07Speaker 1: Vince McMahon basically put all of his eggs in one basket.
- 8:11Speaker 1: In that basket was going to be WrestleMania. If the
- 8:14Speaker 1: initial WrestleMania was not a success, the WWF definitely would
- 8:19Speaker 1: have not been around any longer, and he decided to
- 8:23Speaker 1: pair up Hulk Hogan with mister t who was also
- 8:26Speaker 1: in Rocky three. He's one of the bigger TV stars
- 8:30Speaker 1: at around this time with the A Team, and he
- 8:34Speaker 1: has his own Breakfast Cereal, he has his own cartoon
- 8:37Speaker 1: show like He's gigantic, and they do various programs on MTV,
- 8:42Speaker 1: which is pretty much in its infancy, but everyone and
- 8:45Speaker 1: their mother that has cable is watching MTV is must
- 8:49Speaker 1: watch television. And that whole rock and wrestling connection with
- 8:53Speaker 1: Sidney Lauper and you know Roddy Piper attacking her and
- 8:57Speaker 1: her manager and starting this gigantic feud leading up to WrestleMania,
- 9:02Speaker 1: but you know, the war to Settle to score all
- 9:05Speaker 1: these great events on television leading up to that initial
- 9:08Speaker 1: WrestleMania where it would be Rowdy Roddy Piper teaming up
- 9:11Speaker 1: with mister Wonderful Paul Orndorf to take on mister T
- 9:15Speaker 1: and hul Cogan that was must watch, and it wasn't
- 9:18Speaker 1: on pay per view. Pay per view really wasn't a
- 9:21Speaker 1: thing at this point. It was on closed circuit television.
- 9:23Speaker 1: So essentially, if you wanted to watch this event, you
- 9:26Speaker 1: would either a have to go to Madison Square Garden
- 9:29Speaker 1: and watch it live or b go to an arena
- 9:32Speaker 1: that's showing the event. So you'd basically pay money to
- 9:35Speaker 1: go to an area to watch it on just a
- 9:39Speaker 1: big screen TV or you know, some sort of projector
- 9:42Speaker 1: I'm not sure exactly what the size of these screens were,
- 9:46Speaker 1: but you couldn't just order it at home. Really, pay
- 9:48Speaker 1: per view didn't become truly big until a few years
- 9:52Speaker 1: later and they got rid of the whole closed circuit concept.
- 9:55Speaker 1: So Hogan teams up with mister T and it's a
- 9:59Speaker 1: gigantic success. WrestleMania is huge, and then they start having
- 10:03Speaker 1: events on NBC, things like the Main Event and Saturday
- 10:06Speaker 1: Night's Main Event, and these things were watched by millions
- 10:10Speaker 1: of people. I'm gonna look up right now, most watched
- 10:15Speaker 1: wrestling program of all time, and I believe it was
- 10:22Speaker 1: something called the Main Event, which is when, yes, this
- 10:25Speaker 1: was the main event there on NBC on February fifth,
- 10:28Speaker 1: nineteen eighty eight. This event drew a record thirty three
- 10:32Speaker 1: million viewers, and this led to Andre the Giant winning
- 10:39Speaker 1: the title from Hogan but then giving it to the
- 10:44Speaker 1: million dollar man, Ted Dbasse. But there was a swerve
- 10:47Speaker 1: because the referee, Dave Hebner, his twin brother, showed up
- 10:52Speaker 1: and Earl Hebner, who became a very famous or infamous
- 10:56Speaker 1: referee in his own right. But that thing was watched
- 11:00Speaker 1: by thirty three million viewers. So let's just go, I
- 11:04Speaker 1: just I'm curious. What was the most watched regular season
- 11:07Speaker 1: football game last year? Most watched regular season NFL game
- 11:15Speaker 1: twenty twenty four. Let's see googling, googling, googling. So the
- 11:24Speaker 1: most watched game last year was the Giants.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Wow.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Really it was a Thanksgiving Day game the Giants and
- 11:30Speaker 1: the Cowboys, which drew thirty eight million viewers, so just
- 11:36Speaker 1: a little bit more than a pro wrestling event, but
- 11:40Speaker 1: majority of NFL games don't get anywhere near this. This
- 11:43Speaker 1: is pretty much like tripling what your average NFL game gets,
- 11:47Speaker 1: usually around ten million or so on like a CBS
- 11:50Speaker 1: or Fox sort of game. So wrestling was gigantic, and
- 11:54Speaker 1: there was very few channels. Also, that is why many
- 11:58Speaker 1: people were watching this because they pretty much either didn't
- 12:02Speaker 1: have cable and really only had five things to watch.
- 12:04Speaker 1: So he prebaty went to stuck watching what was ever
- 12:07Speaker 1: on CBS or NBC or you know the other channels
- 12:10Speaker 1: that you would get with basic cable. So Hulk Hogan
- 12:15Speaker 1: is rising right now. He's hosting Saturday Night Live, He's
- 12:19Speaker 1: on the cover of Sports Illustrated. He's doing really bad movies,
- 12:23Speaker 1: Like he was great as Thunderlips, but then when he
- 12:26Speaker 1: became like the leading man in movies like Noel Holds
- 12:30Speaker 1: Barred and Mister Nanny and Suburban Command a terrible movies
- 12:34Speaker 1: but also like a guilty pleasure of mind. I really
- 12:36Speaker 1: actually like the movie no Holds Bard he had a
- 12:39Speaker 1: really funny cameo. And Gremlins two, and you know, wrestling
- 12:44Speaker 1: just kept on getting bigger and bigger. As I mentioned,
- 12:46Speaker 1: Hogan got his own cartoon show. He had a workout set,
- 12:50Speaker 1: he had all the action figures in video games, the
- 12:53Speaker 1: LJN rubber figures. That's something that's always been in my household.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I can't remember a time in my life when Hulk
- 13:01Speaker 1: Hogan wasn't a part of my life. Even before I
- 13:04Speaker 1: watched pro wrestling. We had the Giant Wrestling Buddy, there's
- 13:08Speaker 1: like giant stuffed animals in the shape of wrestlers. We
- 13:11Speaker 1: had the Hogan one. We still have the Hogan one.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I have the LJN one, which is like this big
- 13:16Speaker 1: rubber figure, and it's just it was just always there
- 13:19Speaker 1: before even watching wrestling. Like I said, Hogan was a
- 13:23Speaker 1: part of my life, and wrestling kept on continuing to
- 13:26Speaker 1: get bigger and pretty much the peak I would say
- 13:30Speaker 1: for this early era of wrestling would be WrestleMania three,
- 13:33Speaker 1: when Andrea the Giant officially passed the torch to Hulk
- 13:37Speaker 1: Hogan in front of When they say ninety three thousand,
- 13:41Speaker 1: I've heard that. You know, number is exaggerated like most
- 13:45Speaker 1: things in pro wrestling, but a crapload of people at
- 13:48Speaker 1: the Pontiac Silver Dob witnessed this amazing match between Andre
- 13:54Speaker 1: the Giant when he got body slammed by the Hulkster
- 13:58Speaker 1: and I had this a few times this week. Actually,
- 14:01Speaker 1: if there was to be a logo for professional wrestling,
- 14:05Speaker 1: just how the NBA has their logo with Jerry West
- 14:09Speaker 1: the Silhouette of Jerry West. I would say the logo
- 14:13Speaker 1: of pro Wrestling would be a silhouette of Andre being
- 14:18Speaker 1: slammed by Hulk Hogan. Then Hogan would have feuds with
- 14:21Speaker 1: Macho Man Randy Savage, you know, leading up to a
- 14:26Speaker 1: formation of their tag team, the Megapowers. Then they imploded
- 14:30Speaker 1: by WrestleMania five. Then Hogan himself tried to pass the
- 14:34Speaker 1: torch to the Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania six. That really
- 14:37Speaker 1: didn't go too well. A warrior couldn't lead like Hogan led.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Hogan was. He knew how to represent the company to
- 14:47Speaker 1: perfection at this point, and there was really no flaws
- 14:50Speaker 1: in what he did. There was one minor hiccup in
- 14:53Speaker 1: the mid eighties, pretty much right before WrestleMania, the initial one.
- 14:57Speaker 1: He choked out television host Richard Belzer. And it's this
- 15:02Speaker 1: funny moment. At this time, a lot of news stations
- 15:05Speaker 1: were trying to say, oh, wrestling's fake, No crap, it's fake.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I mean, how dumb do you have to be? Did
- 15:09Speaker 1: people actually think this was real? I gets so funny
- 15:12Speaker 1: reading these books and these hearing these stories from the
- 15:15Speaker 1: old old timers. Yeah, these fans tried to stab me
- 15:19Speaker 1: because of a match, Like, did people actually think wrestling
- 15:22Speaker 1: was real? Like how dumb did you have to be
- 15:25Speaker 1: to think what you were watching wasn't a staged event.
- 15:28Speaker 1: I would love for somebody that grew up in like
- 15:30Speaker 1: the sixties and seventies that actually watched wrestling to let
- 15:34Speaker 1: me know if they were grown up, then did they
- 15:37Speaker 1: actually think it was real? Because pretty much by the
- 15:40Speaker 1: age of seven, what I knew what I was watching
- 15:43Speaker 1: was staged. I still loved it, you know, just like
- 15:46Speaker 1: I like watching the Ninja Turtles and Captain America and
- 15:49Speaker 1: all these Marvel movies and all these you know, comic
- 15:52Speaker 1: book movies. I just saw it as something like that.
- 15:56Speaker 1: But yeah, he choked out Richard Bellser live on television
- 16:00Speaker 1: and for real, and there was a big lawsuit. Belzer
- 16:02Speaker 1: won a couple million dollars actually from it. But then
- 16:06Speaker 1: a big hiccup took place in the early nineties. The
- 16:10Speaker 1: government start to go after Vince McMahon, one for sexual
- 16:15Speaker 1: allegations between some of the people that worked for the
- 16:18Speaker 1: company against some of these young men that worked for
- 16:21Speaker 1: the company. But for Hogan's sake, they were also going
- 16:24Speaker 1: after McMahon because of steroids, and they were saying that
- 16:28Speaker 1: McMahon was pushing steroids onto his wrestlers, and with Hogan
- 16:33Speaker 1: being the face of pro wrestling and being a gigantic
- 16:37Speaker 1: man who clearly was on steroids, the world was pretty
- 16:41Speaker 1: much waiting to see how we would handle this situation.
- 16:45Speaker 1: And he did go on the Arsenio Hall Show and
- 16:48Speaker 1: really dropped the ball there because he pretty much denied
- 16:52Speaker 1: ever taking steroids besides one time due to an injury.
- 16:56Speaker 1: And that's just the first lie that we've heard from
- 17:01Speaker 1: Hulk Hogan over the years. The guy's infamous for just
- 17:05Speaker 1: telling these fabricated stories anything from Andre to Giant was
- 17:10Speaker 1: seven hundred pounds when I slammed him and then he
- 17:12Speaker 1: died a week later. I was the original pick to
- 17:15Speaker 1: be the bassist for Metallica. Darren Aronofsky wanted me to
- 17:19Speaker 1: play Mickey Rourik's role in the Wrestler. Like pretty much
- 17:22Speaker 1: all things that have been debunked from talking to members
- 17:26Speaker 1: of Metallica or Darren Aronofsky or just you know, looking
- 17:30Speaker 1: at facts like, yeah, Andre didn't die for another five
- 17:33Speaker 1: years or six years. He just lied. There's montages of
- 17:37Speaker 1: videos online of the hulkster lying. But this was the
- 17:41Speaker 1: first one that the masses really saw and they started
- 17:46Speaker 1: to turn on Hogan. Around this time, ninety two to
- 17:48Speaker 1: ninety three, the WWF was going in a different direction.
- 17:52Speaker 1: He was starting to not get the reactions that he
- 17:54Speaker 1: was once getting, and eventually he did leave the WWF
- 17:59Speaker 1: to join a rival company called WCW, which was run
- 18:03Speaker 1: by Ted Turner, and in nineteen ninety four he faced
- 18:06Speaker 1: off against Rick Flair and in his first match, he
- 18:09Speaker 1: won the WCW Championship, And eventually that started to get
- 18:15Speaker 1: old and they thought, okay, Wolka Mania truly is dead.
- 18:18Speaker 1: At this time, WCW was a down south sort of organization.
- 18:23Speaker 1: They didn't really like the Northeast territory of the WWF,
- 18:26Speaker 1: so he wasn't really being accepted. And eventually, in nineteen
- 18:30Speaker 1: ninety six, Hogan did the truly unthinkable, and he turned heel,
- 18:34Speaker 1: meaning Hogan, who was a good guy for fifteen years
- 18:38Speaker 1: or so, turned his back on WCW, turned his back
- 18:41Speaker 1: on the fans, and became a bad guy by joining
- 18:45Speaker 1: forces with Scott Hall and Kevin Nash to form the nWo.
- 18:49Speaker 1: And this was the resurgence that pro wrestling needed after
- 18:52Speaker 1: that steroid trial took place. Wrestling was doing its worst
- 18:57Speaker 1: numbers in decades, and this rejuvenate the business. It lit
- 19:02Speaker 1: a spark under the WWF to get their product in shape,
- 19:06Speaker 1: and then we started to see stars like Stone Cold,
- 19:08Speaker 1: Steve Austin and The Rock and all these young people
- 19:11Speaker 1: in WWF sort of step up their game, all because
- 19:15Speaker 1: of what Hogan was able to do in the nWo.
- 19:18Speaker 1: With the WCW brand, and you know, he had a
- 19:22Speaker 1: second run of being the biggest bad guy in the business.
- 19:25Speaker 1: He was the biggest good guy of all time, and
- 19:27Speaker 1: you can make an argument he was the biggest bad
- 19:29Speaker 1: guy of all time in pro wrestling. Eventually, WCW goes
- 19:34Speaker 1: out of business and Hogan returns home to the WWF,
- 19:40Speaker 1: and with this so many dream matchups people were waiting
- 19:44Speaker 1: to see. I think the big one everyone wanted to
- 19:46Speaker 1: see was Stone Cold Steve Austin versus Hulk Hogan. Unfortunately
- 19:50Speaker 1: that never happened in the singles match in the WWF. Now,
- 19:55Speaker 1: Hogan did come into the WWF as a heel, meaning
- 19:59Speaker 1: he was maintaining that Hollywood Hogan nWo character, but the
- 20:05Speaker 1: audience didn't want any of that. They wanted to cheer him.
- 20:08Speaker 1: He was finally back home, and he eventually faced The
- 20:13Speaker 1: Rock at WrestleMania eighteen. And this was supposed to be
- 20:17Speaker 1: The Rock as the good guy and Hulk Hogan as
- 20:20Speaker 1: the bad guy, but that Toronto crowd was going nuts
- 20:24Speaker 1: for the Hulkster. It's my favorite pro wrestling match of
- 20:28Speaker 1: all time, and the audience truly makes that match something special.
- 20:33Speaker 1: The loud noises being made constantly through this match, and
- 20:37Speaker 1: the fact that this one wasn't the main event is insane.
- 20:40Speaker 1: How do you not have this match go on?
- 20:42Speaker 3: List?
- 20:42Speaker 1: It completely stole the show. It took the wind out
- 20:45Speaker 1: of the Souths for the remainder of the event, and
- 20:48Speaker 1: Hogan truly showed that he was the master of pro wrestling,
- 20:53Speaker 1: the biggest name in all of pro wrestling when he
- 20:56Speaker 1: lost to Hulk Hogan. I mean, excuse me when he
- 20:59Speaker 1: lost to The Rock at WrestleMania eighteen, but all the
- 21:02Speaker 1: eyes were on the Hulkster. He's the one that everyone
- 21:05Speaker 1: was talking about. Eventually, he fully turned into a good guy,
- 21:08Speaker 1: won the WWF Championship one more time. He was actually
- 21:12Speaker 1: the last image on TV for the WWF was Hogan
- 21:15Speaker 1: holding the World Championship. And then the next day they
- 21:18Speaker 1: had to change to the WWE because of a lawsuit
- 21:21Speaker 1: involving the World Wildlife Fun So Hogan eventually his run
- 21:27Speaker 1: in WWE comes to an end. He has a match
- 21:30Speaker 1: with Vince McMahon at WrestleMania nineteen. It's absolutely insanity and
- 21:35Speaker 1: it actually is another guilty pleasure of mine. I actually
- 21:38Speaker 1: really enjoy his match with McMahon at WrestleMania nineteen. But
- 21:42Speaker 1: around this time, he starts a reality show on VH one,
- 21:48Speaker 1: Hogan Knows Best. And this is really like the downfall
- 21:51Speaker 1: of that whole family because they put their kids in
- 21:55Speaker 1: the spotlight and it really broke up their family pretty much.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Their family has been a disaster since the creation of
- 22:06Speaker 1: this show. Brooke Hogan, the daughter, she pretty much wanted
- 22:11Speaker 1: nothing to do with Hulk Hogan for the last five, six,
- 22:14Speaker 1: seven years of his life. She didn't invite him to
- 22:20Speaker 1: her wedding. He never saw her, you know, his grandkids.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Nick Hogan, the son, he got into a horrific car accident,
- 22:33Speaker 1: pretty much leaving his best friend braindead, and he went
- 22:39Speaker 1: to prison for that. And then also Linda Hogan divorced
- 22:44Speaker 1: Hulk Hogan and took pretty much all of his money
- 22:47Speaker 1: and Hogan was really on hard times, and another you
- 22:51Speaker 1: know tragedy happened with Nick Hogan going to prison. Audio
- 22:58Speaker 1: was leaked about Hogan and pretty much saying the guy
- 23:02Speaker 1: that got into the accident, that's you know, brain dead.
- 23:05Speaker 1: He sort of deserved it and we're gonna, you know,
- 23:08Speaker 1: make a reality show about this. And I know a
- 23:11Speaker 1: lot of people are crapping on him for that, and
- 23:14Speaker 1: I can understand why. But he's also like talking to
- 23:17Speaker 1: his son and he you know, maybe he was just
- 23:20Speaker 1: saying whatever to cheer him up, So I'm not going
- 23:23Speaker 1: to hold him to that. Hogan eventually joined a company
- 23:29Speaker 1: called TNA Wrestling and pretty much led that company underground
- 23:34Speaker 1: and really destroyed any momentum that they were gaining in
- 23:38Speaker 1: the years prior to Hogan joining. And eventually he was
- 23:44Speaker 1: privately filmed having sex with a radio personality's wife. There's
- 23:50Speaker 1: a guy named Bubba the Love Sponge who was Hogan's
- 23:52Speaker 1: best friend, and he pretty much allowed his wife to
- 23:56Speaker 1: have sex with Hogan at any point, but he filmed
- 24:00Speaker 1: or it was filmed, and then that film got leaked,
- 24:04Speaker 1: and this is really like the true downfall of Hulk
- 24:10Speaker 1: Hogan was this sex tape because with the sex tape
- 24:14Speaker 1: being leaked, audio eventually got leaked of Hogan saying horrific
- 24:18Speaker 1: racist things. It's an interesting thing because you hear from
- 24:24Speaker 1: a lot of black wrestlers today and I've read from
- 24:29Speaker 1: Teddy Long, from Devon Dudley, from Mark Henry, and they
- 24:35Speaker 1: were all praising Hulk Hogan. So I don't know how
- 24:39Speaker 1: he handled this situation to the masses, but it seems
- 24:43Speaker 1: like to a lot of wrestlers he handled this post
- 24:48Speaker 1: racism a like you know, outing well with some wrestlers,
- 24:54Speaker 1: but for a lot of people, he didn't handle it well.
- 24:56Speaker 1: He didn't show any remorse, he didn't do what he
- 25:00Speaker 1: to be done to gain the love and support of
- 25:03Speaker 1: a lot of people. I mean, a lot of people
- 25:07Speaker 1: did not forgive Hulk Hogan for these racist rants. And
- 25:12Speaker 1: then he doubled down on not being liked by people
- 25:17Speaker 1: by supporting Donald Trump, who was a very polarizing figure
- 25:22Speaker 1: in the world. I don't know if you haven't heard
- 25:24Speaker 1: about that, but a lot of people don't like Donald
- 25:26Speaker 1: Trump apparently, and Hogan doubled down and was there during
- 25:32Speaker 1: you know, the election run and was you know, fully
- 25:36Speaker 1: supporting Donald Trump. So he had a lot of negativity
- 25:41Speaker 1: in the last decade of his life, from his marriage
- 25:43Speaker 1: and family falling apart to the racist leak that came
- 25:48Speaker 1: out to aligning himself with Trump. And his last public
- 25:53Speaker 1: appearance on television was at Monday Night Raw's debut on
- 25:58Speaker 1: Netflix earlier this year, and Hogan was booed out of
- 26:01Speaker 1: the building. That's the last image that majority of the
- 26:05Speaker 1: people that watch pro wrestling saw of the Hulkster was
- 26:10Speaker 1: that image of him being boed out of the arena.
- 26:14Speaker 1: And it's actually really said, in my mind, it is
- 26:17Speaker 1: sad that that's the legacy for a lot of people
- 26:21Speaker 1: of Hulk Hogan is those last couple of years. And
- 26:25Speaker 1: I can understand, like I said at the beginning of
- 26:28Speaker 1: this long winded rant, that I can understand why people
- 26:31Speaker 1: haven't forgave Hulk Hogan. And if you want to live
- 26:34Speaker 1: that way, by all means do it. I'm not going
- 26:37Speaker 1: to tell you who to like and who to not like,
- 26:39Speaker 1: but I like to look at the good things that
- 26:42Speaker 1: he's done, the good things that he did for the
- 26:43Speaker 1: wrestling business, the amount of money these performers are getting
- 26:47Speaker 1: right now, you have to thank Hulk Hogan. Anytime Hogan
- 26:51Speaker 1: was on the card. Everyone want to be on the
- 26:53Speaker 1: card with Hulk Hogan because they were going to get
- 26:55Speaker 1: paid the most amount of money. All the merchandise that
- 26:59Speaker 1: these guys are selling right now in this business, you
- 27:01Speaker 1: have to thank Hulk Hogan. All the iconic moments and
- 27:04Speaker 1: rivalries and promos that the Hulkster put out through all
- 27:08Speaker 1: these years, those stuff, those images and moments are going
- 27:13Speaker 1: to be timeless. And was he the best in ring wrestler. No,
- 27:19Speaker 1: was he the best person from a lot of wrestler's perspectives. No,
- 27:24Speaker 1: But he's certainly the biggest name in the history of
- 27:27Speaker 1: the business of pro wrestling, and he is immortal in
- 27:32Speaker 1: the sense that he will always be remembered. So I
- 27:35Speaker 1: like to remember the good in people. You hear a
- 27:39Speaker 1: lot of good charitable deeds that Hogan did, you know
- 27:42Speaker 1: with the Make a Wish Foundation. So even though Terry
- 27:45Speaker 1: Bulea was a flawed man, I'd like to still give
- 27:48Speaker 1: tribute to the great Hulk Hogan, who passed away this
- 27:52Speaker 1: past week at seventy one years old.
- 28:19Speaker 5: Justin thank you for giving us that perspective on his
- 28:22Speaker 5: earlier career and the things that he's done.
- 28:25Speaker 3: But now that the fluff piece is over.
- 28:28Speaker 5: Let's get into the side of Houk Hogan that he's
- 28:32Speaker 5: been most known for in these last couple of years.
- 28:35Speaker 3: As I would put it, the real Hokgan. We'll Hogan
- 28:41Speaker 3: in TNA.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Oh, we'll get to that. We'll get to we'll get
- 28:45Speaker 1: to Hogan's debacle with TNA. But but it is interesting
- 28:48Speaker 1: you brought up that that reality show really did destroy Hogan.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Uh.
- 28:53Speaker 1: It really opened up their marriage and put their kids
- 28:56Speaker 1: in the spotlight and gave their kids even bigger egos.
- 28:59Speaker 1: And eventually his son Nick crashed a vehicle.
- 29:03Speaker 5: We'll get into that. We'll get into it. I'll tell
- 29:09Speaker 5: you right now, I kind of I know what I know.
- 29:11Speaker 5: It doesn't feel like it. I feel like we're building
- 29:13Speaker 5: him up, going to just we're gonna break it down.
- 29:16Speaker 1: We're gonna have to break it down. So let's get
- 29:18Speaker 1: into it. Hogan, Hogan's kid goes to prison. His friend,
- 29:22Speaker 1: who I believe was a marine or some sort of
- 29:24Speaker 1: military member, uh, pretty much is brain dead after this,
- 29:28Speaker 1: and Hogan uh tries to cheer up his son, and
- 29:32Speaker 1: I think says something awful about the marine or the
- 29:37Speaker 1: military guy basically being a bad person, and that was
- 29:40Speaker 1: sort of another thing like, Okay, Hogan's like bashing this
- 29:43Speaker 1: guy who doesn't have a brain right now and his
- 29:45Speaker 1: son pretty much ruined his life.
- 29:47Speaker 5: But uh, I believe he said a certain I believe
- 29:50Speaker 5: he made a certain certain comments about what he felt
- 29:53Speaker 5: like karma would be for him and his family.
- 29:55Speaker 3: Oh yeah, what what he scared of? I don't know,
- 29:58Speaker 3: do we get that audio?
- 30:05Speaker 5: It's kind of it's kind of a little distorted, but uh,
- 30:10Speaker 5: what is he saying along the lines of He's like
- 30:14Speaker 5: he's scared that basically his family would come back as niggas.
- 30:17Speaker 5: Basically he'd be scared if they would his family would
- 30:20Speaker 5: come back as black folks.
- 30:21Speaker 1: So yeah, that was that was definitely.
- 30:23Speaker 3: Uh, basically more for a year than he had. But
- 30:37Speaker 3: like if you just if you go, if you can
- 30:39Speaker 3: find you can find all.
- 30:40Speaker 1: This audio, Yeah, this is the audio I believe of
- 30:44Speaker 1: him talking about Brook's boyfriend.
- 30:46Speaker 5: Okay, yeah, what he said about Brook, what he alluded
- 30:49Speaker 5: to Brook, I'm trying to remember, Uh, alluded to something
- 30:53Speaker 5: that basically like that's uh, basically sense of like you
- 30:58Speaker 5: as long as you don't deal, you could find anybody long.
- 31:01Speaker 5: It's like an eight foot tall nigga, what yo like?
- 31:03Speaker 5: Why are you even put Why is that word evening
- 31:06Speaker 5: your vocabulary?
- 31:07Speaker 3: My god?
- 31:07Speaker 1: So let's get to the to the downfall of Hault Cogain.
- 31:10Speaker 1: His son goes to prison for you know, the vehicular incident,
- 31:14Speaker 1: and then eventually he does film a sex tape that
- 31:17Speaker 1: he doesn't even know is being filmed with his then
- 31:20Speaker 1: friend Bubba the Love Sponge, and eventually that sex tape
- 31:24Speaker 1: does get released illegally through Gawker, and there's a whole
- 31:27Speaker 1: lawsuit that takes place. But there's audio that is released
- 31:32Speaker 1: from the sex tape which has Hogan saying these derogatory
- 31:35Speaker 1: things towards black people. In the meantime, he has joined
- 31:38Speaker 1: TNA Wrestling, and that's a whole clusterfuck of a thing
- 31:41Speaker 1: right there, with a lot of creative control. But let's
- 31:43Speaker 1: get to the downfall of Hogan where he says these
- 31:45Speaker 1: racist things. And he does win the lawsuit versus Gawker,
- 31:49Speaker 1: but I think he would have traded all that money
- 31:51Speaker 1: in the world for his legacy being tarnished because he's
- 31:54Speaker 1: caught saying these racist things. He gets fired by the WWE,
- 31:57Speaker 1: because he gets rehired back by them, and he's pretty
- 31:59Speaker 1: much been hated for the last ten years.
- 32:02Speaker 5: And then when they ask him, when when he finally
- 32:04Speaker 5: does come back and they ask him apologize, basically he
- 32:07Speaker 5: gave He gave a nope. He basically gave a non apologies,
- 32:11Speaker 5: basically said uh. He basically said to a certain degree, well,
- 32:17Speaker 5: you know, you gotta be careful of these cameras.
- 32:20Speaker 3: And I'm like, bro, what the fuck? What the what?
- 32:23Speaker 5: Like, what the fuck are you talking about? That's not
- 32:25Speaker 5: a fucking apology, Hogan.
- 32:27Speaker 1: I'm always of the mindset if you make a mistake,
- 32:29Speaker 1: you are allowed to redeem yourself, unless you're raping somebody
- 32:33Speaker 1: or murdering somebody or doing something really unthinkable like that.
- 32:35Speaker 1: But I think if you say really bad words or
- 32:38Speaker 1: even do something really bad, I'm always of the mindset
- 32:40Speaker 1: that you could change, even if you're old, even if
- 32:42Speaker 1: you're fifty six years old. I've seen it before in
- 32:45Speaker 1: real life. I've seen it in the documentary. I've seen
- 32:47Speaker 1: people legitimately want to become better. Where I think I
- 32:51Speaker 1: agree with you, Corey is he never showed that he
- 32:55Speaker 1: wanted to actually change. He didn't take any steps to
- 32:59Speaker 1: prove that he's a change man, because you know, like
- 33:02Speaker 1: you said. When he spoke to the wrestlers, he was
- 33:06Speaker 1: more cautious with telling them to avoid being caught on
- 33:10Speaker 1: camera saying racist things instead of saying, I fucked up.
- 33:14Speaker 1: I'm sorry. Let me prove it to you that I'm
- 33:16Speaker 1: a good guy. Let me do some charitable work. Let
- 33:18Speaker 1: me talk to you guys one on one. Let me
- 33:20Speaker 1: find out why you're bad. You always hear about this
- 33:22Speaker 1: when people say anti Semitic things. Julian Edelman, who's a
- 33:25Speaker 1: famous Jewish athlete, he'll say something along the lines of,
- 33:28Speaker 1: why don't you come over, We'll have a nice dinner,
- 33:30Speaker 1: we'll discuss why you're what you're saying is wrong, and
- 33:32Speaker 1: he offers up that sort of redemption with these people.
- 33:35Speaker 1: But Hogan never went out of his way to find redemption.
- 33:38Speaker 3: Just I just want to help people out.
- 33:40Speaker 5: Just understand some of the things he said, because I'm
- 33:42Speaker 5: trying to get some statements, because I know if you
- 33:44Speaker 5: didn't hear this quote from Hogan. So gets to the
- 33:48Speaker 5: point where I don't know if Brooke was fucking a
- 33:51Speaker 5: black guy, a black guy's son, or they've been hanging out,
- 33:54Speaker 5: hanging out and I'll quote them holding hands together on tour,
- 33:58Speaker 5: they were getting close con of fucking. I'm not a
- 34:03Speaker 5: double stand this type of guy. I'm a racist, to
- 34:06Speaker 5: a point, a self admitted racist. He admitted, I am racist.
- 34:11Speaker 5: You know, fucking niggers, he said to er. He said that,
- 34:16Speaker 5: But then when it comes I'm like, bro, what the
- 34:19Speaker 5: fuck are you talking about?
- 34:21Speaker 1: Yes, yes, I mean again. Well it's also to say that,
- 34:25Speaker 1: not that that makes it right, but he was did
- 34:29Speaker 1: not know he was being filmed. I'm not saying that
- 34:30Speaker 1: makes it right, but he did not know he was
- 34:32Speaker 1: being filmed. So that's just a weird situation.
- 34:36Speaker 5: To me, that makes it worse because guess what. So
- 34:40Speaker 5: what that tells you is he's putting up a front
- 34:43Speaker 5: to everybody else. It's like, you see who this person
- 34:45Speaker 5: he want you to be, But behind closed doors, he
- 34:48Speaker 5: don't give a fuck about you. And mind you, black
- 34:51Speaker 5: folks were some of his biggest fans force, We were
- 34:54Speaker 5: some of his biggest supporters. But once you show us
- 34:56Speaker 5: you don't fuck with us, after a while, we stopped
- 35:00Speaker 5: fucking with you.
- 35:01Speaker 1: And I still think he could have redeemed himself. I
- 35:04Speaker 1: think even though he said all those dead things, I
- 35:06Speaker 1: think if he if he genuinely felt sorry and and
- 35:10Speaker 1: showed people like Mark Henry and Shelton Benjamin and MVP,
- 35:13Speaker 1: all these wrestlers that are black that he wanted to
- 35:16Speaker 1: change and he felt bad, but he never took those steps.
- 35:19Speaker 1: He never took any accountability for what those words were said.
- 35:22Speaker 1: And I think that's part of his downfall for sure.
- 35:25Speaker 3: And that's been a stain on him.
- 35:26Speaker 5: A lot of black wrestlers to this day, including like
- 35:29Speaker 5: you said, Shelton MVP, lost tons of respect for him,
- 35:33Speaker 5: and I think he got to I think it gets
- 35:35Speaker 5: to a point where now like he goes out to Raw,
- 35:38Speaker 5: he's getting booed like he like his last Raw appearance,
- 35:42Speaker 5: he got booed out of the fucking and you had
- 35:45Speaker 5: most people go back on social media and say, I'm
- 35:48Speaker 5: glad I was the fucking person that boot him.
- 35:50Speaker 3: I was a part of that.
- 35:51Speaker 5: Like they claim to fame that night, on that night,
- 35:53Speaker 5: that Netflix night, was the fact that they said I
- 35:56Speaker 5: got the boo hoole code I got. I got to
- 35:58Speaker 5: boot that motherfucker basically. And you notice some people, like
- 36:03Speaker 5: there's some people who with his pass, and you know
- 36:09Speaker 5: there's some people who really don't don't give a fuck
- 36:12Speaker 5: about it. Oh.
- 36:13Speaker 1: I see it all over social media the last day.
- 36:16Speaker 5: Uh.
- 36:16Speaker 1: People are either heartbroken for this thing, uh, for for
- 36:20Speaker 1: Terry Blea hul Cogan's passing, or they're celebrating the passing.
- 36:24Speaker 1: And I think hul Cogan is such an interesting human being,
- 36:28Speaker 1: an interesting character, a very flawed individual for sure, to
- 36:32Speaker 1: say the least.
- 36:33Speaker 3: Uh.
- 36:34Speaker 1: And I think that's where we could separate Terry buleya
- 36:37Speaker 1: in hul Cogan. Now, Terry Belaya also did do some
- 36:41Speaker 1: good things. Whenever you hear about the Make a Wish
- 36:44Speaker 1: kids like hul Hogan, Terry Blea was always so good
- 36:47Speaker 1: with them. And now you've also seen a lot of
- 36:49Speaker 1: wrestlers come out and say how much they helped them,
- 36:52Speaker 1: Guys like Goldberg and Nash and DDP and Mick Foley
- 36:56Speaker 1: and Triple H and all these people. Undertaker even with
- 36:59Speaker 1: a know a salute to hulkkin So's it's he's such
- 37:02Speaker 1: a complicated character. But I can understand why people hate him.
- 37:06Speaker 3: Honestly, I can UNDERSTANOK.
- 37:07Speaker 5: My thing is, I can understand how people, you know,
- 37:09Speaker 5: praise him for what he's done in the in the
- 37:12Speaker 5: in the wrestling industry, but at the same time, I'm
- 37:14Speaker 5: not gonna bash those those black folks who you know
- 37:18Speaker 5: feel a certain way because you gotta write to feel
- 37:20Speaker 5: that way about that person because he said things that
- 37:25Speaker 5: like to you, to you as a person will be like, okay,
- 37:29Speaker 5: I'm trying remember what's the clippers on the clippers? Donald
- 37:33Speaker 5: Donald Donald Sterling. When he said those things that he said,
- 37:36Speaker 5: it was fuck him too. I'm like, I'm give a
- 37:39Speaker 5: fuck that you lost your team when you say when
- 37:42Speaker 5: you say crazy out of pocket ship like you're not
- 37:46Speaker 5: gonna get celebrated. Like and now, mind you, these people
- 37:50Speaker 5: in the industry that we know is super conservative, we
- 37:53Speaker 5: don't really give a fuck that they're super conservative. That
- 37:56Speaker 5: that that that's the way you live. Like under we
- 38:00Speaker 5: don't undertake a super conservative blue lives mad and everything.
- 38:03Speaker 1: We never heard a racist thing from him, and.
- 38:05Speaker 5: People fuck with the Undertaker Rick Flick. There's been stories
- 38:08Speaker 5: about him making Rachel marks towards certain people, but you
- 38:12Speaker 5: know what he did. He had a fucking rebrand. He
- 38:14Speaker 5: didn't get caught saying it out loud. He had a
- 38:16Speaker 5: fucking rebrand. And it's like, okay, people fucking Oh. There's
- 38:21Speaker 5: a lot of.
- 38:21Speaker 1: There's also a lot of people that don't fuck with
- 38:23Speaker 1: Rick Flair, and I'm also one of them. I think
- 38:24Speaker 1: Rick Flair, I think Rick Fleer, you know his real birthday.
- 38:27Speaker 1: I think he's a scumback.
- 38:28Speaker 3: I think people.
- 38:29Speaker 5: I think people, uh they they know about his sexual
- 38:34Speaker 5: escapade and his sexual I don't want to say, I
- 38:37Speaker 5: can't allegations of sexual assault, allegations of sexual assault.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Showing his penis when people don't want to see it.
- 38:43Speaker 5: Most famously, like I'm trying to remember this from Hell
- 38:47Speaker 5: playing Roight from Hell, and then his multiple WWE stories
- 38:50Speaker 5: like like they made a cartoon.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Yeah, they're joking about it like flash. People like, Okay,
- 38:56Speaker 1: well you can't do that, Rick Flair.
- 38:57Speaker 5: And it's like but then you you look at like
- 39:00Speaker 5: the like the history in the culture of WWE, like
- 39:03Speaker 5: you have guys like Swerve strictly who called out these
- 39:06Speaker 5: things about like Vince McMahon, Vince McMahon saying niggative Booker
- 39:14Speaker 5: t like just flat out and and Vince mc man Josh, Josh,
- 39:18Speaker 5: you got that audio listen man in the Great Woods.
- 39:20Speaker 3: Of gold Bird. Guess what.
- 39:24Speaker 2: You're next.
- 39:26Speaker 3: We will be putting something on a grill that day.
- 39:28Speaker 1: I'm sorry, Yes, I think, uh vincechmick Man has already
- 39:32Speaker 1: hated enough at this point that there will be celebrations
- 39:35Speaker 1: for sure when he passes away.
- 39:36Speaker 5: But this was just the pre as most people say,
- 39:39Speaker 5: this is, this was just the pre game today that yesterday.
- 39:42Speaker 1: So this is where we differentiate. I think Hulk Hogan
- 39:46Speaker 1: the character and and Terry Belay are the human being
- 39:49Speaker 1: because his impact as far as a pro wrestler to
- 39:52Speaker 1: give all these people money, there would be no wrestlemaning.
- 39:55Speaker 1: People wouldn't be getting these giant contracts, there would be
- 39:58Speaker 1: no action figures, and maybe eventually a along the line
- 40:00Speaker 1: something would develop. And I'm not saying it definitely wouldn't
- 40:03Speaker 1: have happened without Hogan, but it wouldn't have happened that quick,
- 40:05Speaker 1: with that amount of success. Without Hulk Hogan. All these
- 40:08Speaker 1: guys oh a giant face, a giant debt to that
- 40:13Speaker 1: character of Hulk Hogan. Guys like the Rock that we
- 40:16Speaker 1: saw his social media posts, there would be no Rock,
- 40:18Speaker 1: there would be no Miss. I'm not saying the Miss
- 40:20Speaker 1: is on the Rocks level, but so many of these
- 40:22Speaker 1: people were so influenced by Hull comania to start wrestling
- 40:25Speaker 1: by watching him edge edge was a giant whole comania.
- 40:28Speaker 1: I can appeared that wrestling.
- 40:30Speaker 5: Like basically to me, if you if you're over forty
- 40:33Speaker 5: and white, you comania. Yeah, you're probably gonna deny, but
- 40:38Speaker 5: most likely see him Punk. Yeah, even seeing Punk probably
- 40:41Speaker 5: was a whole comania.
- 40:42Speaker 1: I'm sure at some point he cheered Hogan on.
- 40:45Speaker 3: You got most got l A.
- 40:46Speaker 5: Knight, You got multiple guys, Matt Cardona, you got multiple
- 40:49Speaker 5: guys who came out and you know, basically showed up.
- 40:51Speaker 5: You know how they looked. They had to fake mustache
- 40:54Speaker 5: and everything like that. I mean, like I said, he
- 40:57Speaker 5: there was a lot of there was there was a
- 40:59Speaker 5: lot of impact things that he's done in the industry.
- 41:02Speaker 5: There's a lot of negative things as far as not
- 41:04Speaker 5: even just talking about the racism and ship like.
- 41:06Speaker 1: That, holding back to creative control, all that stuff, the steroids,
- 41:10Speaker 1: a lying on our Citney Hall Show, choking out Richard Belger.
- 41:12Speaker 1: There's a throw.
- 41:14Speaker 5: He's not single handedly, but he had a big part
- 41:17Speaker 5: in the destruction of TNA, because people forget that. Going
- 41:21Speaker 5: before he came to TNA, him and Ry Pischel, they
- 41:24Speaker 5: were on a good run. You had, you had your
- 41:26Speaker 5: young superstars, you had the X division, You had everything
- 41:29Speaker 5: set in place, and then they come they they say,
- 41:32Speaker 5: you know what, this ring doesn't work.
- 41:34Speaker 1: For me for foresights, We're gonna go for size.
- 41:36Speaker 5: It was believe with six sides, the sixth SyES go
- 41:39Speaker 5: go to four.
- 41:40Speaker 3: If you can't I forgot.
- 41:42Speaker 5: There's a famous quote that if you can't draw, if
- 41:46Speaker 5: if everybody's changing, the channel's brother, we don't want you.
- 41:49Speaker 5: I'm like, basically he shipped on a lot of people
- 41:53Speaker 5: in the DNA, and I think that like people had
- 41:57Speaker 5: that mindset after after he left it, that m Bischoff
- 42:00Speaker 5: and Dixie Carter they totally destroyed TNA.
- 42:04Speaker 1: And you could make the argument also without him helping
- 42:07Speaker 1: the younger talent and starting to push the younger talent
- 42:09Speaker 1: in wc W, they ruined that company. Even though he
- 42:13Speaker 1: gave w CW the biggest rub that they've ever had.
- 42:16Speaker 1: There would have been no booming w c W, but
- 42:20Speaker 1: they might not have gone out of business because they
- 42:22Speaker 1: would have started pushing younger talent.
- 42:23Speaker 5: Well to that point, I would I would I would
- 42:28Speaker 5: push back because I would say that he kind of
- 42:30Speaker 5: leached off of a situation because you had Kevin n
- 42:34Speaker 5: Ash Scott hole an X Pop, I mean six or
- 42:38Speaker 5: six bringing in that cool factor who they say, you know,
- 42:41Speaker 5: we influenced by We're influenced.
- 42:43Speaker 3: By rap music and West Coast West.
- 42:46Speaker 5: Coast rap and everything like that, And he said, you
- 42:48Speaker 5: know what, these guys are cool, I'm going to hitch
- 42:50Speaker 5: my bandwagon to them, and then you know, you get the.
- 42:53Speaker 3: Instances with uh.
- 42:54Speaker 1: But that's just smart.
- 42:55Speaker 5: With Dennis Rodman, He's like, you know, you're gonna have
- 42:58Speaker 5: one of the biggest bad boys with one of the
- 43:00Speaker 5: biggest bad boys in wrestling right now.
- 43:02Speaker 1: But again I look at that as being a smart businessman.
- 43:06Speaker 1: He knew he wasn't hip, so he had to align
- 43:09Speaker 1: himself with Hall and Nash. He knew Rodman was the
- 43:12Speaker 1: biggest story in the NBA around that time with Michael
- 43:15Speaker 1: Jordan and the Utah Jazz going up against and.
- 43:17Speaker 5: Then those guys permanently became a stood Just like outside
- 43:21Speaker 5: of Kevin Nash, Scott Hall never was able to progress
- 43:24Speaker 5: to being a World championshabag well.
- 43:26Speaker 1: That's to his own problems with his substance abuse issues.
- 43:28Speaker 5: And it was like even with the finger polk of doom,
- 43:31Speaker 5: even in that instant, Kevin Nash got little Bro, like
- 43:35Speaker 5: he won the title, he won the Big one and
- 43:38Speaker 5: then got Little Bro.
- 43:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, for sure. Well let's go over this though,
- 43:42Speaker 1: you know, Hogan Terry Blair did die of cardiac arrest
- 43:45Speaker 1: at his home in Clearwader, Florida, yesterday of this recording,
- 43:49Speaker 1: July twenty fourth, twenty twenty five, at the age of
- 43:51Speaker 1: seventy one, and his death came a month after he
- 43:54Speaker 1: underwent major spinal fusion surgery, and there was denial for
- 43:58Speaker 1: a number of weeks that he was in bad health.
- 44:01Speaker 1: Jimmy Hard just like the day before karaoke Brother Jimmy,
- 44:04Speaker 1: was he doing it from his deathbad?
- 44:06Speaker 3: Jimmy Hart was like, He's like, he's perfectly funreaky fine brother,
- 44:10Speaker 3: perfectly fun. And it was like this, he couldn't kick out.
- 44:13Speaker 3: He couldn't kick out.
- 44:14Speaker 1: So it's been interesting for sure. So in final finality,
- 44:19Speaker 1: what do you think his legacy is Corey? Is it Hulkemania,
- 44:24Speaker 1: is it the nWo or is it the last ten
- 44:26Speaker 1: years of him being an out cast for a lot
- 44:29Speaker 1: of people.
- 44:29Speaker 3: It depends on who you ask.
- 44:31Speaker 1: And we haven't even got into I know we're running
- 44:32Speaker 1: out of time. But also he aligned himself with Donald
- 44:36Speaker 1: Trump and that was a big thing.
- 44:38Speaker 5: Maga brother, and don't forget real American beer. Yeah, it's
- 44:42Speaker 5: like just the it depends on who. It depends on who.
- 44:45Speaker 5: It depends on who you ask, because if you acts
- 44:49Speaker 5: most I want to say, if you asks like down
- 44:52Speaker 5: WWE fans like gives something that like I'll put like
- 44:56Speaker 5: this three categories. Right, you asked the regular the regular
- 45:01Speaker 5: white wrestling fan, they'll probably say one of the greatest
- 45:06Speaker 5: wrestlers of all time.
- 45:07Speaker 3: He helped, he helped wrestling too what it is today.
- 45:12Speaker 3: Then you have.
- 45:15Speaker 5: You have the the WWE fan, the guy that no
- 45:18Speaker 5: matter if he's black, white, or whatever, WW is is
- 45:21Speaker 5: thinking he's going to defend ww no matter what.
- 45:25Speaker 3: And whole Cogan even though he said that ship can.
- 45:28Speaker 5: Do no wrong in their eyes, Like I said, black
- 45:30Speaker 5: or white, that WW fan will defend him to the end.
- 45:33Speaker 5: And stuff's like if you say anything negative about who
- 45:36Speaker 5: Coogan say, why are you doing this?
- 45:38Speaker 3: And why are you saying? Is let that man rest
- 45:41Speaker 3: is like?
- 45:41Speaker 5: And then you have the guy you have black folks
- 45:44Speaker 5: and most most people who view him as why the
- 45:49Speaker 5: funk should all give a fuck about this racist? Yeah,
- 45:51Speaker 5: like just you did what you did, like as far
- 45:54Speaker 5: as in the industry, kudos, but I could give two fucks.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Where do I sit that?
- 46:02Speaker 3: Where do I sit? I fall into a weird category.
- 46:09Speaker 3: I'll wear it.
- 46:11Speaker 5: I fall I personally fall into the I really could
- 46:15Speaker 5: give to fuck, I really could give to fucks. And
- 46:18Speaker 5: I was like this, I know what you did. I
- 46:20Speaker 5: can I can acknowledge what you did for wrestling, like,
- 46:24Speaker 5: I don't have no problem. I don't have no problem
- 46:26Speaker 5: doing that. I have no problem given giving him you
- 46:29Speaker 5: give him his praise. But at the same time, I
- 46:32Speaker 5: know what the fuck you are. I know what the
- 46:33Speaker 5: fuck you did. And I'm just like I personally because
- 46:38Speaker 5: people look at me crazy if I'm like Dick riding
- 46:41Speaker 5: for a whole cold. He was like damn. He was like,
- 46:44Speaker 5: we wonder who you voted for. They would look at
- 46:47Speaker 5: they would look at me very coolish.
- 46:49Speaker 3: I can't have that on my I can't have that
- 46:51Speaker 3: on my stripe. So you would not.
- 46:52Speaker 1: I know you are a big fan of wearing jerseys
- 46:56Speaker 1: and whatnot, And somebody questioned some of the attire that
- 46:59Speaker 1: you wear for time to time in Eagles jersey here
- 47:01Speaker 1: and there, would you not be rocking a hul Comania shirt.
- 47:05Speaker 1: At any point in your life, you would wear an
- 47:08Speaker 1: nw OH shirt.
- 47:09Speaker 3: I bet I would wear.
- 47:10Speaker 5: In Wiosha, yeah, because that was a collective. I would
- 47:15Speaker 5: wear in the Wosha because that's.
- 47:16Speaker 1: A hul Comania.
- 47:17Speaker 3: Though. I don't know if I could do the full
- 47:20Speaker 3: hul Comania.
- 47:20Speaker 5: I couldn't beat James. I couldn't beat James Harden. You
- 47:23Speaker 5: seen James Harden at Fanatics.
- 47:24Speaker 1: No, was he rocking it.
- 47:25Speaker 5: James Harden came out in a full hulk Hogan. He said,
- 47:29Speaker 5: you know he was called James Hogan.
- 47:31Speaker 1: Oh what's wild?
- 47:32Speaker 3: I mean yeah, And it was like he had the
- 47:34Speaker 3: beard he had and Dan had to he ripped his shirt.
- 47:38Speaker 3: He did everything. I couldn't do.
- 47:40Speaker 4: That to quote young thug, just to chime in here,
- 47:43Speaker 4: James Harden don't have internet. That that that's what happened,
- 47:46Speaker 4: that James Harden don't have internet. To stick up from
- 47:48Speaker 4: my bearded brother. That's my quick one.
- 47:51Speaker 1: They didn't know Hogan was saying all these things.
- 47:57Speaker 3: Josh, cool question because Josh, since you hear we really.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Yeah, outsider, what do you think of Hogan?
- 48:02Speaker 5: Yeah? What do you think of Hogan? What do you
- 48:03Speaker 5: fall in this line? Because you're not the biggest wrestling.
- 48:06Speaker 4: No, I'm not, but I will say I think a
- 48:09Speaker 4: balance has been struck between you two of Yes, as
- 48:12Speaker 4: far as the legacy, you know, I had a thought
- 48:14Speaker 4: as y'all were going and just making an NBA comparison
- 48:19Speaker 4: because basketball is my sport, like that's my interest. The
- 48:22Speaker 4: Kobe Bryant legacy is an interesting parallel to me Jean
- 48:26Speaker 4: off the Dome because like great legacy, multiple time champion.
- 48:30Speaker 3: When you think of the NBA.
- 48:32Speaker 4: You might think of a couple names here and there
- 48:33Speaker 4: before you get to Kobe, like Lebron and Jordan, but
- 48:36Speaker 4: he's probably in the top three of the names, like
- 48:39Speaker 4: people in our age group think of. But at the
- 48:41Speaker 4: same time, he did have to pay a settlement because
- 48:45Speaker 4: he raped the woman in Colorado, among other things like
- 48:49Speaker 4: treating teammates like trash and all that. But you talk
- 48:51Speaker 4: to me, I'm like, yo, Kobe was that guy?
- 48:54Speaker 2: Yo?
- 48:54Speaker 4: Like yeah, I love Kobe. So it's interesting separating the
- 48:58Speaker 4: art from the artists in a way, gift flaws is
- 49:01Speaker 4: gonna get shown.
- 49:02Speaker 5: Like they said, like flow, like most of us ain't perfect,
- 49:06Speaker 5: but we don't do shit like that. Were in public
- 49:09Speaker 5: where we can get like where we can get our
- 49:10Speaker 5: own selves crucified.
- 49:12Speaker 1: I just want to double down on this statement. I
- 49:15Speaker 1: think everyone is flawed, like you said, and everyone makes mistakes.
- 49:18Speaker 1: It's what you do when you make the mistake and
- 49:21Speaker 1: how you handle that mistake that really shows what your characters.
- 49:25Speaker 1: There's been plenty of people that have done really bad
- 49:27Speaker 1: things that have ended their lives being beloved, and I
- 49:31Speaker 1: think that's the big thing where Hogan truly fucked up.
- 49:34Speaker 1: He fucked up, and he could have saved himself. He
- 49:36Speaker 1: could have been the last ten years. He could have
- 49:39Speaker 1: spent the last ten years hanging out at YMCA's, hanging
- 49:42Speaker 1: out at fundraisers for the black community. He could have
- 49:45Speaker 1: learned to be a better person and showed the dedication.
- 49:48Speaker 1: But he never did that. I would say majority of
- 49:50Speaker 1: these wrestlers that grew up in the seventies and eighties,
- 49:52Speaker 1: we're probably saying ten times worse things than Hogan.
- 49:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, most definitely.
- 49:57Speaker 5: But he always said was instead apologize, he said defences
- 50:01Speaker 5: watching watch it. Hey, look when you have all these
- 50:04Speaker 5: you have these you have some conservatives, and you have
- 50:07Speaker 5: people going like Charlie Kirk and only people, why are
- 50:09Speaker 5: you doing this I feel like, oh my god, you
- 50:11Speaker 5: got the audio. You got the audio. Oh man, That's
- 50:18Speaker 5: how I feel when when when he was like, come on,
- 50:21Speaker 5: have some compassion, see have some decency. I don't got
- 50:24Speaker 5: to do none of that.
- 50:25Speaker 1: It's an amazing fall from grace. It's several falls from graces.
- 50:28Speaker 1: It's a guy who fell, picked himself up, fell again,
- 50:31Speaker 1: picked himself up, and now he's falling. And it's gonna
- 50:34Speaker 1: be interesting what the next five ten years brings to
- 50:36Speaker 1: his legacy. It's gonna be interesting even tonight as we
- 50:38Speaker 1: record this Friday night SmackDown is gonna be later tonighting.
- 50:41Speaker 1: How is he gonna be handled? How's the audience gonna
- 50:43Speaker 1: be handling?
- 50:44Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 50:44Speaker 1: Well are they gonna cheer? They gonna boo?
- 50:46Speaker 3: They already had.
- 50:47Speaker 5: I believe that is a report already out saying that
- 50:50Speaker 5: WW has halted everything and told everybody shift your focus
- 50:55Speaker 5: to whole Colgan. Basically, it's like this, most likely you
- 50:58Speaker 5: know you're gonna get Tim bel salu At start go
- 51:00Speaker 5: and get a couple of packages throughout it, through throughout
- 51:03Speaker 5: the show.
- 51:05Speaker 3: I believe they're gonna have Cody. They're gonna have Cody.
- 51:08Speaker 5: Now, they're gonna have Cody come out give like a
- 51:10Speaker 5: speech and talked about how IMPACTU Hulk Cogan was to
- 51:13Speaker 5: the industry. Now, I wonder who's gonna be that guy
- 51:17Speaker 5: that comes out in the colors.
- 51:19Speaker 3: Who's gonna come out in the colors.
- 51:21Speaker 1: The red and yellow?
- 51:22Speaker 5: Yes, who's Montes Carmelo? Hey Carmelo Hayes. You bet now?
- 51:29Speaker 5: You bet now?
- 51:30Speaker 3: Don't don't let them set you up like this black man.
- 51:33Speaker 1: You know. It's it's also just bizarre because you know
- 51:36Speaker 1: his name, the immortal Hulkgan when you were a kid,
- 51:39Speaker 1: when I was a kid. He just never expected a
- 51:41Speaker 1: guy like this to die. It's sort of I always
- 51:44Speaker 1: thought of like Rick Flair as Megatron and Optimist Prime
- 51:48Speaker 1: being Hulk Cogan, and she's never thought Optimist Prime would die. Eventually,
- 51:52Speaker 1: he did die in the Transformers movie nineteen eighty six,
- 51:54Speaker 1: But you just always thought Hogan was always going to
- 51:56Speaker 1: be around he because he never really aged. He always
- 51:58Speaker 1: kind of looked the same as like, there's no way
- 52:00Speaker 1: Hogan is dying.
- 52:01Speaker 3: This is my last one. This is my last one.
- 52:03Speaker 3: When when he you know, he you know, he got
- 52:05Speaker 3: a tattoo on.
- 52:05Speaker 1: His back, right or does it say some religious thing no,
- 52:08Speaker 1: it says immortal, oh, immortal.
- 52:10Speaker 3: Grim Reap was like like Lebron too we eazy, to eazy,
- 52:16Speaker 3: too we eazy.
- 52:18Speaker 5: I was like, come on man, he was like the
- 52:22Speaker 5: grim Reap became I was like, are you read.
- 52:26Speaker 3: Basically I forgot that. I forgot that. That's that's that's what. Wait,
- 52:33Speaker 3: actually cute that other audio up.
- 52:49Speaker 5: And then it was like before we go because he
- 52:53Speaker 5: does have one final actual legacy move that he does
- 52:55Speaker 5: have and what is that real wrestling with Eric Bischoff.
- 52:59Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I believe that's going to continue. I'm hearing
- 53:01Speaker 1: that's going to be airing on Fox News, which is
- 53:03Speaker 1: an interesting place to have a sport being aired on.
- 53:07Speaker 1: But I hope we did a good job of at
- 53:09Speaker 1: least going over the history of Hulk Hogan and short
- 53:12Speaker 1: of painting a picture of what his life and career was.
- 53:14Speaker 5: So I felt as though we gave a fear and
- 53:16Speaker 5: balanced perspective of Hulk Hogan, his highs, his highs, his
- 53:22Speaker 5: super high, his lows, and everything in between. Because I
- 53:27Speaker 5: felt like we did, like I'm like, as much as
- 53:29Speaker 5: I was kind of like kind of going crazy at
- 53:32Speaker 5: the end on him, you got to give me credit.
- 53:34Speaker 5: I gave him his praise at the start.
- 53:35Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I mean you're you did a fair balanced job,
- 53:38Speaker 1: like you said, I was. Regardless of everything, he's going
- 53:41Speaker 1: to be remembered. He is on that Mount Rushmore Pro Wrestling.
- 53:45Speaker 3: I didn't I didn't dance on I didn't dance on
- 53:47Speaker 3: his grave or anything.
- 53:49Speaker 1: He did a good job for I think we did both.
- 53:50Speaker 1: All three of us did a great job with this,
- 53:53Speaker 1: you know, tribute episode in the sense to.
- 53:56Speaker 3: But to sign off, this is the this is the
- 54:00Speaker 3: whin the bell rings.
- 54:01Speaker 5: With Corey David, Justin Greenberg and the great words in
- 54:04Speaker 5: the in the words of Hulk Hogan, each vitamins, say
- 54:08Speaker 5: your praise and don't do a second. Don't do Royd's
- 54:11Speaker 5: when he says, when I say when I say each vitamins,
- 54:13Speaker 5: I mean actually eat vitamins, don't do roids. Don't take
- 54:16Speaker 5: the easy way out, and say your prays because the
- 54:22Speaker 5: way world, the world is right there. You're gonna need them.
